Ludovick strikes again
as United defeat Army
Thai Premier League Football 2012 Season

Pattaya United continue to climb the Thai Premier League
standings after they recorded a 2-1 home victory of Army United at the
Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya last Saturday, Sept. 8.
The Dolphins took a first half lead through goal hero Ludovick Takam who
played a clever exchange of passes with Korean midfielder Kim Do-Yeon to
break through the Army defence before smashing the ball into the roof of the
net with an emphatic finish.
Following some sustained pressure at the start of the second half, the
visitors managed to draw level thanks to a 20-yard blockbuster strike from
Jakkrapong Somboon which gave Narit in the Pattaya goal no chance.
When Pattaya’s Rangsarit Sutthisa was dismissed from the field for foolishly
kicking out at an opponent, it seemed that it was going to end in another
day of disappointment for Dolphin supporters, however the home team
recovered from the setback to force their numerically superior opponents
onto the back foot and indeed, it was Pattaya who would go on to get the
winning goal, a tap in from Ludovick at the far post to give the striker his
second double goal return in 2 matches.
Tempers began to fray in the visitors’ ranks and the sides were evened up
when Army’ Pavarit Sansook received his marching orders from the referee
late in the game. Pattaya were dominant by this stage though and could have
gone on to win by a larger margin were it not for some smart saves by Hembut
in the Army goal.
United’s win sees them move up to 11th place in the league standings but
with still a game in hand on all their nearest rivals. The Dolphins’ next
match is this coming Saturday, Sept. 15, away at Osotspa M150 in Saraburi.
At the top of the table things remain unchanged although Chonburi
consolidated their hold on second position after a convincing 4-2 home win
over third placed Buriram United.

Charity football for
Luca Waugh Foundation
Results & Standings August 29 (week 5)
St. Andrews Green Valley is hosting the 3rd annual ‘One
Day, One Goal’ charity 5-a-side football tournament on Saturday September 22
in aid of the Luca Waugh Foundation.
Luca
Waugh.
Three years ago young Luca Waugh tragically entered a swimming pool by
himself and nearly drowned. Luca spent the next five weeks in intensive care
and was finally discharged after seven weeks but the prognosis was bleak.
Diagnosed with severe Cerebral Palsy, blind and unable to move in any way,
Carl and Wendy, his parents, were told the best they could hope for was that
Luca might be able to roll onto his stomach and utter approximately seven
words.
Unable to accept this, Luca, with the support of his family and friends,
began the long process of restoration. It was at this point that Luca’s
Foundation was created and funds donated then and since have allowed no
stone in Luca’s recovery to be left unturned.
Many therapies both traditional and alternative have been explored and the
results of this have been amazing. Sight has been restored and some muscle
control regained. Luca sits independently, he commando crawls and pulls
himself up to kneel against furniture. The most amazing progress has been
cognitive. Luca can talk. Not just a few words, but full sentences and
entire nursery rhymes. More incredible still, he is beginning to read. It is
hoped that with further speech therapy his pronunciation will continue to
improve.
The organizers hope as many people as possible will come along to support
the tournament and increase awareness for pool safety and also raise as much
money as possible for this incredibly brave young boy’s foundation.
The competition has seen entrants from many international schools in Bangkok
and Pattaya and also local teams from the Green Valley area.
The competition starts at 8.30am and finishes at 1pm. There will be food and
drink available for purchase. Entrance is free but all donations are
gratefully received. All proceeds go to the Luca Waugh Foundation.
For more information, call St. Andrews School on 038 030 701.

Flying Fortt cements lead in Superbike Championship

Ben Fortt poses next to his
Honda CBR 1000cc race bike.
Pattaya’s flying teenager Ben Fortt notched up another
win in the Thailand SB-2 Superbike Championship last weekend. The sixth
round was held Sunday, September 9 at the Nakon Chaise circuit just north of
Bangkok, and drew entries from all over Thailand.
Ben, on his Honda CBR 1000cc, qualified in third position on the grid with
two very experienced and race ready riders placed in front of him. From the
off Fortt managed to advance into second position just on the heels of the
Kawasaki ZX1000 in front of him, but also with the Suzuki GSXR 1000 on his
back wheel and pushing him all the way.
With great determination on lap six of the ten, Ben out-braked the race
leader in a clever and calculated passing maneuver on his inside to hit the
front for the first time. The next two laps however he was under relentless
pressure from the Kawasaki rider but managed to counter every move and
eventually pulled clear to take the victory.
After the race Ben said that he was always confident he had the race pace to
secure victory.
“I didn’t want to take him too early, I calculated to pressure him into a
mistake which paid off and it was too much for him to get back at me,” said
a delighted winner.
This was Fortt’s third win of the season, and together with third and fourth
place finishes in earlier rounds it puts him firmly ahead in the
championship with just four rounds left.

PSC Softball welcomes
some new players

Ernie blasts the ball to right
field.
Sunday Sept 9th was breezy and mostly cloudy which made
for perfect playing conditions for the outstanding turnout of 27 softball
players who came to the Thai Polo Club for the weekly Pattaya Sports Club
softball games.
Ernie McInerney, after not having played with us for at least a year, got
the first game started with some solid hitting to right field for the
Sunrise Tacos team.
Husband and wife combo of Gelena and Alex Libin, who just moved to Thailand
3 days before, helped the team along as well as both showed stunning
offensive and defensive skills. In Gelena’s first at bat she got a grounder
by pro baseball player Adam Sowell at shortstop. Getting a grounder past him
is harder than not being able to make a new friend, despite having 2000Bt in
your pocket, while taking a late night stroll on Walking St.
Just Burgers had the all-star outfield with Johnny Giuffrida making a few
great catches. With 2 outs and the winning run for Sunrise Tacos on 2nd
base, David from Spain, made the play of the day, a diving catch on a dead
run in foul territory. This gave Just Burgers the win in game one by a score
of 14-13.
It took until game two for Just Burgers first baseman Diego Wells to consume
enough of what he was referring to as “medicinal drinks” to thin his blood
to a level where he could perform. Perform he did with a couple of long
balls over the fence in right field (one of them so powerful it cracked one
our new composite bats.) Turns out Diego’s medicinal drink when diluted with
water, to reduce its combustibility, can be used as rocket fuel.
Sunrise Tacos Dave Dolle was spraying balls in every direction keeping the
defense confused on how best to his batting barrage. Jerry “Greased
Lightening” Jorgenson added to the Sunrise Tacos team batting onslaught with
a game winning triple to left center field. Sunrise Tacos took game two
18-16 to level the series on the day.
Note: PSC Softball is always looking for new players regardless of skill
level, experience or time away from the game. We have players of all ages
and many countries, who enjoy an afternoon of fun and exercise with a bunch
of great guys. We have some spare gloves and everything else you need, so
come on out and check us out at the best softball field in Asia.
We play every Sunday at 12 noon at the Thai Polo Club. For more information
check out the softball page at the PSC website www.pattayasports.org or call
or email John Stockton at 089-932-5433

Sodden Soi Dao & more rain
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
A Monday start for this week on Sept. 3 as we journeyed
the nearly 3 hours east, before turning more north to complete our journey
at Soi Dao Highlands Golf Course. We had decided on an overnighter for a
change, to take advantage of the course availability.
Jonathan
‘California Dreaming’ at Soi Dao.
We teed off on Monday afternoon under cloudy skies, with the course very
wet; I would suggest that a private course could well have been closed. We
decided on ‘lift, clean & place’ to offset the wet and the lack of run for
long game shots.
Owen Walkley (9) played some good golf, especially given the conditions, to
sign for 36 points ahead of the ever consistent Jeff Wylie (5) with 33.
Near pins were shared around between Willem, Jeff & Jonathan – the latter
converting for a nice birdie 2 on Hole 16.
Tuesday morning saw some improvement in the course conditions, but still
very damp so we went with ‘lift, clean & place’ again.
Today it was Jonathan Pratt (18) who edged out Jeff Wylie (5) on count back
20 to 18 after both signed for 35 points.
Near pins today went to Owen and Jonathan, again on #16, and again
converting for birdie.
The 2-day aggregate went to Jeff ahead of Owen, closely followed by
Jonathan.
Thursday we went to Emerald but had to cancel our game as the rain was
persistent and there was no end in sight, pity, but it happens.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday, with ML
hosting prompt presentations on both days. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling
or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Revels enjoys another fine day
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
On Monday, 3rd September, the Pattaya Golf Society
travelled to Crystal Bay to play a stableford competition on the B and A
nines which were in fine condition with good fairways and consistent
greens. The extra bonus was an almost empty course which lay ahead of
the golfers as they teed off in cool, comfortable weather.
With some of the white tees set further back than normal the course was
to prove longer than normal but the field acquitted themselves well with
Andrew Purdie joining local member Takeshi Hakozaki in second place with
a level par 36 points. Firing the best gross of the day, 76, was Seil
Revels and he took the win with 37 points. It was another creditable
performance by the Society’s lowest regular handicapper.
Takeshi scored the only birdie ‘2’ of the day on A8 and the Booby Bevy
went to Darren Locke who played the round with clubs borrowed from the
Rabbi and treated them to some shots, the length and accuracy of which
they had never seen before.
Crystal Bay had come up trumps again as the PGS started the new month in
fine fettle.
Edwards in his element at Green Valley
The Pattaya Golf Society visited Green Valley on Friday, 7th September
after a long absence and found a course in excellent condition with well
grassed fairways and good, quick greens. The format was stableford and a
cloudy day with a strong breeze blowing throughout made for very
comfortable playing conditions. Surely it was a day when golfers on top
of their game would respond with good scores?
One such golfer was Ken Grimes and his 36 points took third place. Tony
Thorne has suffered a slump in form recently through a lack of rounds,
after returning from a visit to Australia, but put it all behind him
this day with 39 points to take second place. The winner was Dave
Edwards, playing at the top of his game on the back nine, who recorded
an excellent forty points.
The only birdie ‘2’ was recorded by Mr Len on the fourth whilst the
Booby Bevy was awarded in retrospect to Wichai Tananusorn after a couple
of very embarrassing moments in the previous competition at Pattana.
Details available on request!

Manager’s Mug makes inaugural debut
PSC golf from The Golf Club

Mugs indeed! Darren Allcock,
Diego Wells, John McHugh and Phil Smedley.
Steve Ellison
The weekend was chaos once again as Diego was back in town from
Burma! Mr. Wells, our former Golf Captain for a week or three (no one is
quite sure) and Darren Allcock (Captain for an even shorter duration) relive
those bygone days with current Captain Phil Smedley while TGC partner John
McHugh looks stunned by the sheer beauty of our new trophy, albeit broken.
The trophy was recently acquired by Mr. Wells whilst visiting Silom and the
legendary Thaniya (Golfers Heaven) Plaza in Bangkok, and has duly donated
this heirloom quality piece to The Golf Club to adorn our humble shelves.
The Crystal Giblet must have lasted for over an hour in pristine condition,
and now has earned its chips, gashes and bruises like the rest of us. Here
is a monument to golf we can all feel comfortable with! Smedley is now the
longest lasting chair over the last 6 months, and quite easily the most
winning with his eclectic victory last month.
Notably christened, the trophy will be presented by the Golf Chairman, with
great pomp and circumstance, to the winner of the Monthly Medal for his
favourite beverage (within reason, of course) so that he may spill it upon
his new winners shirt, just to break it in. The Mug may also be used, at the
Chairman’s discretion, for other embarrassing situations so long as it runs
up the bar tabs.
Thanks Diego, a tradition is born!
Monday, Sept. 3, Green Valley (White tees) – Stableford
1st Keith Warboys (13) 38pts
2nd Mick Beresford (16) 37pts
3rd Claus-Birk Thomsen (13) 37pts
4th Jim Dundon (14) 36pts
Now on to the golf – and it was an abbreviated week as many of the lads were
off to Hua Hin for the”Festival of Golf”, as they brand it. Most courses
charge 1,000 baht green fee which is great value, but it’s just the getting
there that’s the ordeal.
Anyway, as hard to believe as it is, Mr. Keith Warboys was the big winner
this week, and I can confirm that this is his second victory this year! What
a banner year 2012 has turned out to be, what with the great London
Olympics, the upcoming Ryder Cup and now Keith with 2 wins!
I suppose it had to happen sometime, as last time I remember there was a
celestial alignment of Saturn and Jupiter with our Earth for his last
victory, but this time he did it all on his own. Well played Warboys, ring
the bell! It was cigars all around for the après-golf celebrations, so I
guess a groin injury can end up being beneficial to one’s game after all!
Right behind on a pair of 37’s were Micky Beresford for second and the
recently returned Claus-Birk Thomsen on his first trip with us in a while
for third. Jimmy Dundon had a great day shooting a handicap leveling 36
points to get the last spot on the podium.
Thanks for joining us guys, and see you next week for more great golf here
at The Golf Club, the Home of Golf in Pattaya.
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We play on Monday, Wednesday
and Friday so come join us for a seriously fun day out. Just call 085 434

Brian Libbey’s week
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, Sept. 3, Khao Kheow -
Stableford
CSS 72
1st Brian Libbey (9) 35pts
2nd Don Everett (22) 33pts
3rd Konrad Klama (25) 31pts
4th John Wood (23) 30pts
Khao Kheow has been getting quite a lot of negative reports lately but when
the group from Soi 13 visited on Monday the feedback was mostly good. Even
though the course is undergoing serious renovation work in readiness for the
coming hoped for high season, all the ground is clearly marked as GUR and
with a little astute use of the rules it has a very small, if any, affect on
the golf round. But as usual the A and B courses were still quite tough to
play.
Brian
Libbey.
Brian Libbey had an outstanding week, starting with a win here with a steady
round of seventeen out and coming back in eighteen to take a comfortable top
spot by two from Don Everett, who had started well but faded over the
closing holes.
Konrad Klama did enough to secure third place with a round that had promised
much more as he stood on the thirteenth with twenty seven points, but
managed just a meager four points from the last six holes.
John Wood, claiming to be have been freed from the shackles of his recent
four-ball partnerships with Phil Stevenson, now that he has returned to the
north of England to continue with his work in rebuilding the trade union
movement in that country, and not having to search for his balls short of
the red tees, had a slightly better return, although still some way short of
where he would like to be, to finish in fourth place.
There were no ‘2’s in the second division but David Lowe stroked one in to
take the first division pot.
Friday, Sept. 7, The Emerald - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Shuichi Kodaka (16) 38pts
2nd Brian Libbey (9) 36pts
3rd Al Keith (5) 34pts
4th Paul Taylor (19) 34pts
5th Lyle Blaw (11) 30pts
With the Wednesday being taken up with the IPGC Monthly Medals where Brian
Libbey took third place in the first division, it was back to the standard
format of play at the Emerald where there is also a great deal of work being
done to the course, especially in front of the greens. Again the areas are
all clearly marked as GUR but it would be better if they were roped off to
allow for the re-growth to occur without the players tramping over the
ground on route to the greens.
As usual the ‘lift and place’ in the fairways local rule was in place which
afforded a much more pleasurable round for the competitors.
Shuichi Kodaka continues to enjoy a good run of form and took yet another
win with a two under handicap return that will not unduly affect his
handicap as the CSS for the day reduced to 71 to underline the playability
of the course. Shuichi finished two ahead of Brian Libbey whose level
handicap round ensured a third podium placing of the week and gave him a
full set of 1,2,3 for the week.
Al Keith always manages to play steadily no matter the course being played
and did so once again to take third place by winning the count back over
Paul Taylor with a better 19 to 18, even with Paul birdying the par three
fifteenth for four points.
Lyle Blaw rounded out the podium with another of those rounds that could
have been so much better if he had been able to start a bit quicker after
scoring just four points from the first four, he finished well but late.
Brian Libbey scored the lone 2 in the first division whilst Paul Taylor and
Shuichi Kodaka shared the second division rollover pool.
Prior to the presentations there was a welcome back for Mike Hill.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile
082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach
Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do
not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days you wish to play. A schedule of
courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Scribe’s double reason to celebrate
Phoenix Members G.O.L.F. Society

Mike Gerrard and Bill Hewitt
pose with their hole-in-one plaques.
Mike Gerrard.
Friday, August 31, both Bill Hewitt and myself were awarded our
presentation plaques for achieving a hole in one; Bills on Mountain 4 hole
(possibly one of the hardest greens to hit at Phoenix let alone get a hole
in one), and mine on Ocean 7 (probably the easiest hole to hit and record a
hole in one). Both were recorded in the month of July of this year.
For Bill it was his fourth of his career so I suppose it was not so exiting
as my own which was my first and only. Never mind, we can now boast having a
1 to a double figure on a golf hole at some stage in a career. The other
thing that made mine a little sweater was that I have golf insurance in
Thailand and they duly paid me 10,000 baht as a reward. Needless to say a
far chunk of that went on the bar after the game. It would have been 15,000
baht if in a major tournament such as a PSC monthly medal.
On to the golf – and on Friday we had a full three groups out – perhaps a
sign that people are coming back to Thailand for the oncoming high season?
Our winner today was a Kristinn Helgason who, along with Clive Robinson, has
been in the wilderness for some time (and it was great to see them back
playing with us once again). Kristinn scored a superb 41 points to win by
one shot from Bill Hewitt and claiming third place was Mukesh Thakker with
36 points.
We also decided to have a hidden pairs prize and guess what? Kristinn
Helgason and Clive Robinson were the winners with a combined score of 75
points. Great fun!
Near pins went to Granville Swanton, Mukesh Thakker & Peter Rawling. The
lucky draw prizes (donated by our hosts The Relax Bar) were awarded to Mike
Gerrard (free massage), Kevin Joyce (free drink) and Peter Harris (free
drink).
Onto Tuesday, September 4, and although the course is now getting into very
good shape for the oncoming high season there is still the general
puzzlement of some of the management decisions here. We are playing Lake &
Ocean course at present and the marshals seem to think it is better for some
groups to go out from one nine and others from the other nine. Sad to say
the marshals are never around when both sets of players meet half way round
which creates squabbles as to who has the honour.
After discussions with the management they agreed to stop this policy.
However they went on to send all players from the Ocean course first. This
means that everyone who is walking has to walk to the furthest tee box, then
have a huge long walk from the Ocean 9th to the Lake 1st, and then a huge
long walk from the Lake 9th to the car park and clubhouse. The other way
round means that there is minimal walking from the first tee to the 18th
green and car park. I am afraid it seems too sensible a solution. Never
mind, we still love the place so onto the golf.

Tuesday’s top three with two
of the day’s sponsors.
Again we had a bigger than normal turnout and played,
once again, the Ocean first and Lake second (when will they learn?) Three
players shared the first place with 35 points today and on count back it was
yours truly who claimed first place, with Giorgio Baccioli second and Stuart
Gordon third.
Normally we would just have joint first place but with Richard Baldwin and
his beautiful lady, Ann, donating the sponsor’s prize we had to have a
winner. The Ann’s Salon voucher was duly awarded to myself for me to go and
have some part of my body pampered. Might have a blue rinse!
Near pin winners were John Bartley, Arthur Busch, Bob Neylon & Richard
Baldwin. As usual the lucky draw prizes were donated by our hosts The Relax
Bar and they were duly awarded to anyone who did not win anything else on
the day. Recipients were Joris Goetshalkx (again), Matt Anderson (nice to
see him back with us) and another new guy on holiday, Tom Musial.

‘Hurricane’ Higgins blows the field away
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Andy Rich
The move on Tuesday 4th September to the new TRGG headquarters at the Ned
Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee went off very smoothly thanks to half a dozen
volunteers who gave up a day’s golf to lend a hand with the removals.
Ged
Higgins, winner at Phoenix with 45 points
The night before we had a farewell get-together at our former home at the
Bowling Green and judging by the amount of alcohol consumed that evening I
imagine the bar takings increased tenfold for the month. Many a sore head
turned up on the Tuesday morning to start the removals but by lunchtime
everybody had recovered and the work was complete.
The week had started off in fine style with TRGG visiting the beautiful
course at Royal Lakeside which was a first for many of our party, including
myself. Playing a new course for the first time can be quite a challenge and
so it proved. You will gather from the name of the course that there is a
fair amount of water to contend with and take it from me the golf ball
manufacturers won’t be going out of business anytime soon.
Fergus Brennan (H/cap 13), who had played the course before, managed to
overcome his shanking problem for the second Monday in succession, lost
fewer golf balls than most, and came first with a very creditable 35 points.
Seems to me Fergus that the answer to your problem is only to play golf on a
Monday and leave the rest of the week to everybody else!
Ted
Senior was the victor at Crystal Bay
Ged Higgins (19) came in a very close second only losing first place on
count back while Michael Maguire (19) was third on 34 points.
On Tuesday 4th September, moving day, the rest of the golfers took on Green
Valley and regular winner Seil Revels (4) again proved too good for the rest
of the field, finishing in first place on 33 points. Ron Gillett (27) was
runner up with 30 points and Ebina Yoshiya came third also on 30 but losing
out on count-back.
Thursday 6th September saw a larger field make our regular visit to Phoenix
to play the Ocean and Lakes courses. One player had a round to remember when
everything came together and his ball kept disappearing down the hole. Ged
Higgins (19) was the man for whom everything came up smelling of roses and
he returned with 45 points. One minute Ged was smiling walking away with the
prize money, next minute he was crying when he found out that his handicap
had been cut by four strokes. Easy come easy go Ged!
Fergus Brennan (13) showed that Thursdays are also a non-shanking day as he
finished in second with 38 points, which also saw a cut in his handicap.
That Welsh wizard Alun Webber, he with the strangest golf stance you will
ever see on a golf course, came in third on 34 points. Some unkind person
stated his golf stance looks as though he is just about to service a sheep.
I make no further comment other than to say that in my opinion Alun is a
fine upstanding member of our golfing community.
On Saturday 8th September it was the turn of Crystal Bay (A and B courses)
to test the TRGG golfers. Steady Teddy Senior (13) showed the others the way
home with 34 points, with Tim Dalton (18) coming second on 33 after beating
Michael Maguire on count-back.
Good luck to all you golfing enthusiasts for the coming week!

A ‘Blue Ribbon’ Donkey
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society

(L-R) Jan Eriksen, Colin Davis
and Jimmy the Captain.
Sunday, Sept. 2, Green Valley -
Stableford
A Flight
1st Jan Eriksen (8) 37pts
2nd Yui Bietry (9) 37pts
B Flight
1st Colin Davis (17) 36pts
2nd Peter Henshaw (20) 36pts
Near Pins: No 4 Eddy Beilby; No 9 Yui Bietry; No 16 Max Bracegirdle
Age transcended beauty as Jan ‘the quite one’ Eriksen took the upper flight
on a count back as he edged the ‘Junoesque’ Yui Bietry; both Yui and Jan
both posted best of the day 37 points scores.
The calculator was out in B Flight as the management pair of Colin ‘the
Donkey’ Davis and Peter ‘Don O’Corleone’ Henshaw both ground out even par
rounds. It was no surprise to most that the Donkey came out on top - He Haw,
He Haw-ways does!
Please spare a thought for Yui’s other half Pierre ‘the Magician’ - his rip
the card up trick did not quite go to plan as he could not find all the
pieces and had no option but to N.R.
Yui completed her round with a ‘2’, along with Thierry Petrement.
Monday, Sept. 3, Royal Lakeside - Stableford
1st Paul Hack (13) 38pts
2nd John Harney (11) 36pts
3rd Brian Prudden (17) 36pts
Ha! I warned you on Friday that name would come up again. Big hitting Aussie
Paul Hack was the only player to better his handicap with a solid 38 points
at the tough Royal Lakeside.
Paul was closely followed a couple of strokes back by John Harney who was a
count back ahead of Brian Prudden on even par rounds.
A couple of old vets, Jim Elphick and Mike Jeffreys, split the ‘2’s pot.
Wednesday, Sept. 5, Bangpra - Stableford
A Flight
1stJohn Harney (11) 34pts
2nd Eddy Beilby (16) 33pts
3rd Pat Reagan (13) 32pts
B Flight
1st Joe Tynan (31) 37pts
2nd Colin Davis (17) 35pts
3rd Lew Szigligeti (18) 34pts
John Harney, obviously unsatisfied with Monday’s second place, decided to
put the pedal down at the Bangpra course designed by the Japan Golf
Promotion Co. Ltd. His effort was rewarded with first place in the upper
flight. John’s podium mates were Eddy ‘The Eagle’ Beilby and Ireland’s young
Pat Regan as they took second and third respectively, although Pat did need
the aid of a count back decision over C-B Thomsen.
Irishman Joe ‘Sat-nav’ Tynan signaled that there might be more good times
ahead as he was the only player to better par with a rock solid 37 points.
That gave him top podium spot in B Flight and man of the match. Colin ‘the
Donkey’ was two strokes off the pace, as newly arrived Aussie Lou Zig-Zag
tidied up the flight.
Friday, Sept. 7, Treasure Hills - Stableford
A Flight
1st Colin Davis (17) 34pts
2nd Thierry Petrement (10) 34pts
B Flight
1st Lim Reid (27) 30pts
2nd Lou Szigligeti (18) 30pts
Hey where’s ‘Broad more’ Bob? Well before the field could get too smug about
keeping Mr. Newell off the podium, it was pointed out that he had to take a
week’s rest to let his golf shafts cool down.
So that left ‘the Donkey’ an opportunity to vault atop the podium for the
second time in a week and including a second place finish to boot but he did
need the aid of a count back to edge Thierry Petrement, as both were tied on
best of the day 34 points.
A count back also sorted out B Flight as Jim Reid got the better of the
Aussie ‘traffic warden’ Lou Zig-Zag for the top spot.
Brian Prudden was sole heir to the rollover 2’s pot which he split with
Marlene.
If you haven’t heard, no doubt you soon will Brian ‘the wireless’ Wilkinson
is getting married again - No kidding!
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi
13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and
add your name to the list or call Colin 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Winfield in sparkling for at Crystal Bay
PSC golf from Cafe Kronborg

Monday’s top three (L-R): Dave
Neil, Dave Richardson and Mike Winfield.
Monday, Sept. 3, Bangpra – Stableford
It was off to the lovely Bangpra international golf club today where we
arrived 43 minutes later, checked in, and were off the empty first tee under
partly cloudy skies with a nice breeze and no one in front for the entire
round. The course remains one of the best in the area and was like touring a
botanical garden and a zoo with abundant monkeys and a couple of good size
monitor lizards sighted.
Back in the clubhouse after a quick round of 4 hours and 20 minutes it was
welcomes to ‘San Miguel’ Stu Rifkin who was on safari all day, Dave Neal
from the UK and his girlfriend Tientong, Ron Grafton and John Coombs from
Perth WA.
Dave Richardson was the winner today with 34 points, Mike Winfield came
second on 31 and Dave Neal needed a count back to edge Ron Grafton for third
after both returned 30 points
1st Dave Richardson (26) 34pts
2nd Mike Winfield (22) 31pts
3rd Dave Neal (22) 30pts
4th Ron Grafton (13) 30pts
Thursday, Sept. 6, Crystal Bay - Stableford
Today it was Crystal Bay A & C loops and after checking in it was
off to the first tee (C1) 36 minutes early under sunny skies and a with a
good breeze. The course was very tidy but still not as pristine as in the
distant past.
We had a quick round of 3 hours and 50 minutes (3-ball) and back in the
clubhouse welcomes went to Martin Todd, and John Pierrel, with a goodbye to
Hugh O’Donnell going back to Spain and California.
Mike Winfield was the winner today with 40 points, while Tientong Charoerung
took second on a count back from Ron Grafton in third, both on 38 points,
and Takeshi Hakozaki was fourth with 36.
1st Mike Winfield (22) 40pts
2nd Tientong Charoenrung (20) 38pts
3rd Ron Grafton (13) 38pts
4th Takeshi Hakozaki (11) 36pts

Richards & Rought rise to the top
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, Sept. 3, Phoenix –
Stableford
The Ocean course has now been re-opened after eight weeks of
renovations and we were allocated this nine plus the Lakes. Six
four-balls went out with the cut at 7-16 in division 1 and 17+ in
division 2.
Playing off 10 now, the Swansea boy David Richards won division 1 with
41 points, well done Dave. Lindsay Phillips came in second with 34
points and Grenville Hill beat Chris Voller on an 18/17 back nine count
back for third after they both returned 33 points each.
Bryan Rought (with no wind-ups in this report) topped division 2 with 38
points, Sid Ottaway was second with 35 and Marty Aronson beat Tony
Holehouse on another 18/17 back nine count back after they both came in
with scores of 33.
Near pins went to Grenville Hill (2), Dave Richards, Harry Vincenzi,
Mark Armstrong, Tony Duthie and Tony Holehouse.
In the ‘2’s comp, Dave Richards birdied the 7th on the Lakes nine and in
division 2 there was a rollover to Green Valley on the 10th.
Friday, Sept. 7, Eastern Star - 1-2-3 Stableford
There were 11 groups out today in a 1-2-3 rollover
extravaganza with many prizes to be won individually and also for the
teams.
After a day of rain here in Jomtien we were not sure what to expect when
we arrived at the course and on the way to Baan Chang the skies were
threatening over the coast and we were uncertain if we would get a game
in at all today. After changing and walking down to the first tee the
skies improved slightly but a strong wind, the fiercest we have ever
encountered here, was blowing in off the coast and into our faces on the
first tee.
Our caddies informed us that there had been heavy rain here the day
before but after two holes the first group did not think ‘pick, clean
and place’ needed to be implemented so it was a normal round.
The cut today was 6-13 in division 1, 14 -18 in division 2 and 19 plus
in division 3 and it was a tough round for all the players. The best
score of the day came in from Sid Ottaway, playing off 23, who won
division 3 with 36 points. Joe Kubon took second place with 35 and Tony
Holehouse was in third just a further point behind.
Mike Missler topped division 1 with 34 points after beating Jeff Codeiro
on a 20/16 back nine count back and then Jeff beat Chris Voller on a 5/3
back three count back for the runner-up spot.
Another 34 was the winning score in division 2, this time for Paul
Butler who finished one point up on Darryl Blair in second while Harry
Vincenzi took third by beating Karl Flood 4/3 on the back three holes
after they both came in with 31 points.
Near pins (tee shots) went to Jeff Codeiro, Curtis Hessler, Wilf Latham,
Chris Voller and Darryl Blair, the near pins in 2 shots were picked up
by Jeff Codeiro, Kari Kuparinen, Tom Novak and Andy Baber, and the near
pins in three shots went to Jon Lay, Karl Flood, Darryl Blair and again
Andy Baber.
Straight drive awards were claimed by Curtis Hessler and Tony Holehouse
while the longest drives were those posted on the 18th hole by Jon Lay
and Don Head.
In the team 1-2-3 Stableford competition, 75 points was the winning
score for Paul Butler, Curtiss Hessler and Tony Holehouse, in second
place came John Batty, Jon Lay and Marty Rock with 73, and taking third
place with 72 were Rod Howett, Mike Missler and Lindsay Phillips.
No names mentioned of course for the lowest score of the day which was
56.
We were lucky with the weather today and a good day was enjoyed by all.

Carmody cracks 40-points at Khao Kheow
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Tuesday’s top three.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, Sept. 4, Khao Kheow – Stableford
Our first trip of the month is usually to Khao Kheow and so it
was in September. We were relatively light on the ground as several of our
regulars were away for a few days enjoying the delights of courses far away.
Meanwhile, as we drove up from Pattaya it rained all the way and was pouring
down by the time we walked out to the first tee, so we decided to go the
short way around, off the white tees and as the test for the day was to be A
& C Nines we knew we were in for a tough time.
Max
Scott.
The course held up remarkably well under the downpour and we were allowed to
use the buggies. Mind, there was not much run of the ball on the fairways.
The greens were still quite fast although they varied a lot in speed. All in
all it was a pleasant day as in between the rain it was nice and cool.
Back in the Restaurant we had time to catch our breath and as the groups
came in quickly it was not long before we were on the road back to Bert’s.
We arrived at Bert’s for the presentation and the winner was declared to be
Don Carmody with a fine 40 points. In second place was Brian Parish with 37
points and in third was George King with 36.
Near Pins: George King, Brian Parish
Friday, Sept. 7, Crystal Bay – Stableford
This was just another day on a good golf course at a fine price.
So a quick drive down Sukhumwit saw us arrive at Crystal Bay in good time to
arrive on the first tee and to see for the first time, for a long time, many
golfers. However, we were at the front of the queue and were able to get
away on time.
The test for the day was to be the A and C Nines, and with the day cloudy
and rain expected it was good to get away on time. Mind, it was expected the
going would be slow and so it proved. It was not long before we realised the
ground was saturated and when we got to the greens they were spongy and very
slow indeed.
The round took a long time however it was finally time for a shower, in cold
water, very invigorating, then it was back to Bert’s.
Late back it was soon into the results. The winner with 36 points was Max
Scott ahead of David Nicholson in second on 35 points. In third place came
Daryl Evans with 34 points and in fourth was Takahashi Hakozaki with 33 on
count back over Brian Parish. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Dick Warberg, Daryl Evans, Max Scott (2)

Bishop battles through to claim the trophy
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

(From left): Jim Payne, Murray
Hart, George Bishop, Keith Allen and Keith Buchanan.
Monday, Sept. 3, Burapha -
Stableford
Nineteen players for Burapha on a great day just made for
golf. We played the A and D courses which is a little unusual so decided on
the white tees for the day. The A course was in great condition, especially
the greens as they were fast and true, but the D course greens and surrounds
have still not fully recovered from the recent maintenance and don’t look
good but the greens are still true although not as fast as A.
Over a third of the field shot par or better, with many
others just one or two further back but the day belonged to Barry McIntosh
who continued his good form from Hua Hin with a great score of 45 points off
his 19 handicap. Barry collected 25 points on the D course - 38 of the
stick, well done. Likewise, Kev Waycott has been playing well of late and
took second place with 39 points off his 10 handicap.

JingJo, the late Frank
O’Neill’s son, left, presents the newly named trophy to George Bishop.
There was a grudge match between the team of Rosco &
Bourkie (the Aussies) v Paul Greenaway and Ian Heddle (the Brits) but
unfortunately the Aussies wilted under the pressure on the back nine to lose
the match with Bourkie only recording 8 points for the nine holes, and Paul
commenting that Rosco would have had 40 points if he hadn’t had to carry a
rucksack!
There was only one ‘2’ for the day which went to the
recently returned Jim Brackett.
1 st Barry
McIntosh (19) 45pts
2 nd Kev
Waycott (10) 39pts
3 rd Jim
Brackett (6) 36pts
Tuesday, Sept. 4, Pattaya
C.C. – Stableford
It’s been said officially that the back nine will open on
1st November, there’s still a lot of grass growing to be done but let’s hope
they can achieve their target. If the present condition of the front nine
greens is anything to go by, then we could all be in for a treat.
12 Outbackers here today and quite how we didn’t get very
wet is unknown; there were some serious clouds about, dropping a bit of rain
on us around the third hole and then it threatened throughout before raining
a little on the same hole on the back nine but not enough to cause any
delay.
Pottsy demonstrated what he can do when he puts his mind
to it, shooting a fine 42pts to win by four from the Turnip on 38; with the
organiser, Chad, taking third with 37.
There were four ‘2’s; from Dennis Persson, Alan
Whittingham & two from David Earthrowl.
1 st Campbell
Potts (17) 42pts
2 nd Dennis
Persson (20) 38pts
3 rd Barry
Chadbourn (20) 37pts
Wednesday, Sept. 5,
Bangpra – Stableford
There were 10 players due to play today but someone
forgot to put his name down to play so we ended up as 11 but no harm done,
as we had three tee times booked. We teed off on time following a four-ball
and the speed of play could have been quicker but never mind, TIT, and this
is Bangpra where you can expect a slow round now and then.
On hole 16 we saw a troop of monkeys playing about but
not with our clubs thank goodness and on hole 17 we saw the legendary
monitor lizard, boy is he big!
Dennis Pelly spat the dummy out as his other companions
were busy talking about soccer on his back-swing and whilst he was putting,
however this didn’t deter him from shooting 35 points; but oh, it could have
been more if they only talked about golf...
The course was once again in great condition and the
greens lived up to their name, slick.
There was only one ‘2’ from Dennis Pelly
1 st Dennis
Pelly (10) 35pts
2 nd Robert
Barnes (12) 35pts
3 rd Murray
Hart (14) 34pts
Wednesday, Sept. 5, Siam
Plantation – Stableford
The usual early start again for the 14 players at Siam
Plantation and the starters sent the group off ahead of our 8.36 official
tee time on a beautiful sunny day with a breeze that got stronger as the day
went but kept the temperature down.
The course was in its normal superb condition but the
greens on Pineapple (C) seemed a little slower than those on Sugar Cane (A).
There is a lot of work being carried out on the rough but it doesn’t affect
the course or our play.
Only Captain Stephen beat par with a score of 37 points
off his 10 handicap, from Ian Heddle on 35 points off his 5 handicap on a
day when Jim Bryan’s game, who has been playing so well recently, totally
deserted him.
Welcome back to Ron Dickie and also a special welcome to
Mike Padilla who is rarely seen on a golf course these days.
There were two ‘2’s from Rosco & Capt’ Stephen, both on
hole C3.
1 st Stephen
Mann (10) 37pts
2 nd Ian
Heddle (5) 35pts
3 rd John
Kendall (21) 33pts
Friday, Sept. 7, Green
Valley – Stroke
The 36-hole stroke-play tournament, previously known as
The Decanter, now known as the Frank O’Neill Memorial Trophy, got off to a
blustery start here at Green Valley on a difficult day for scoring.
This annual two-day event marks the fifth anniversary of
the Outback Golf Bar, with the second round to be played at Burapha on
Monday; the top half of the field went through to the final 18 holes playing
stroke, whilst those who missed the cut (the bottom half) would have their
scores converted to stableford and play in the plate tournament. There were
also two regular one day comps.
43 players set out today, playing in four divisions, but
toiled in the windy conditions, as only Dennis Pelly managed to break par
with a net 70 to win Div A. Next best were three 72’s from Ron Dickie (2 nd
Div A) and Murray Hart who won Div B from Keith Buchanan on count back. Both
Div C and Div D were won with 73’s from Denis Steel and Martin O’Neill (last
year’s winner), respectively.
There were four near pins; two of which went to Jack
Butler (which were subsequently redrawn) and the other two to Dennis Persson
and John O’Keefe.

Monday, Sept. 10, Burapha
– Stroke/Stableford
The second day of the Outback’s 36 hole 5th Birthday
event was at their (the Outback’s) regular Monday venue, Burapha. 37 players
coming through from Friday at Green Valley were to continue their quest for
victory with about half the field vying for Frank O’Neill Memorial Trophy
playing stroke-play and the other half after the stableford plate win.
Set the A & B nines from the long blue tees it was always
going to be a stern test and there were some quite remarkable stories
regarding the tales of two nines. Sugar, who started on the back nine, made
the turn at 3 under (42) then lost the plot returning in 11 over (57) and
perhaps even more remarkable, Jim Payne, who was playing in the plate, went
out with 12 stableford points only to return with 24, with 11 of those
coming in the last three holes.
Seven more players joined in for the daily event, which
was again split into four divisions with the best score of the day coming
from George Bishop with 41pts to win Div D by 5 from Jim Payne (36) and
Dennis Persson (32).
Keith Allen, the winner in Hua Hin, bounced back to form
after a couple of ordinary rounds at Pattaya C.C. last week, with another
fine 38pts (now playing off 16) to take Div C by six from John O’Keefe on
32; whilst John Cunningham produced another fine display of golf to score
37pts off his 7 handicap to win Div A by three from Paul Greenaway.
Before moving on to the two day results and the overall
winner, we would just like to welcome a couple of Outback newbies who joined
us for a hit today, Bill Idagi and Jason Pacey.
So with one or two players arriving back at the bar a
little later than planned, General Jack called for the food to be served
before proceeding with the presentation, ably assisted by Suzi Lawton, who
deserves a special thank-you for her help at the start today.
Murray Hart, who followed his net 72 on Friday at Green
Valley with another net 72 today was right in the frame for the re-named
trophy with a total of 144, particularly as the first round leader, Dennis
Pelly, fell out of contention after a relatively poor 78 today, for his two
day total of 148 to end up in fifth; but it was the 2009 winner of this very
same tournament, George Bishop who came through with a solid net 67 today,
giving him the win with a two round total of 143, to beat Muzza by one.
The stableford plate went to Jim Payne after his
remarkable round, ending up a with a two day total of 63 points to win from
Dennis Persson and John O’Keefe, both with 62. Those total scores may not
look special but remember all the top scorers from Friday went on to play in
the medal comp. whereas the leading stableford score which was brought
forward was only 30pts.
Finally to today’s near pins; well Jim Payne picked up
two of them with other two going to Jim Brackett and George Bishop.

Kraft shoots 46-pointer
but misses out
PSC Blue Moose Golf

Paul Kraft, left, with Oiy St.
Laurent, center, and Joe St. Laurent, right.
Monday, Sept. 3, Pattaya C.C. –
Stableford
Four groups teed ‘em up at Pattaya Country Club for Monday Golf
with the Blue Moose. Included in the players today was Paul Kraft who has
not played in three months and because of his lay off he did not want to
enter the tournament. As it goes Paul scored 46 points and would have come
in first place.
Scores were good as 9 of the 14 golfers had at least 34 points. When the
scores were totaled up, Herbie Ishinaga came in third with 37 points after
losing out to Joe St. Laurent on count back over the last 6 holes. Joe lost
out to his wife Oiy who had 39 points. Oiy learned a quick lesson on how
winning means that you pay for drinks.
Wednesday, Sept. 5, Burapha - Stableford
The Blue Moose hackers travelled to Burapha this Wednesday, one of the nicer
courses on the rotating schedule. Weather was good with a slight wind to
keep the temperature down. The father and son duo of Richard and Anthony
joined the Moose golfers once again.

Larry Emerson, left, with Paul
Kinmond.
The previous week’s trophy winner, Ciano Glavina, dropped
back to 22 points today to once again call into question his stellar
performance on trophy day. Larry Emerson meanwhile continued his consistent
golf with 35 points to take first place. Paul Kinmond made his first podium
visit with 34 points to take second.
Near Pin prize went to Bruce who won 30 % off his bill at the Blue Moose.
The golfers returned to the Blue Moose for presentations and the usual
provisions provided by the capable staff.

Old clubs just the ticket for Butler
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Monday, Sept. 3, Bangpra – Stableford
Bangpra is one of the favourite courses for the Bunker Boys, and is
currently one of the few courses that we’re playing twice per month. The
staff here are always pleasant and welcoming, and the starter is always
efficient and on top of his job, so it was no surprise that we teed off
promptly on time.
Buff
(left) on his debut with the Bunker Boys and fellow new boy Thomas.
The weather today was overcast and the course was in its normal excellent
condition, so it was only a question of which golfer could find his putting
touch on the difficult greens. On the day, it was no surprise that August
Golfer of the Month, Gerry Cooney, came out on top again.
There was a veritable plethora of players on 34 and 33 points, giving Buff
his first experience of calculating difficult count backs. Geoff Parker
claimed second place edging out Lee Butler, Peter Habgood and the unlucky
John Graham on the count back, and the 3 players on 33 points all missed
out.
1st Gerry Cooney (14) 36pts
2nd Geoff Parker (14) 34pts
3rd Lee Butler (14) 34pts
4th Peter Habgood (18) 34pts
Near pins: Lee Butler, Paul Smith, William Macey and Geoff Parker.
Wednesday, Sept. 5, Eastern Star – Stableford
Slight chaos as we checked in at the Eastern Star course, with 4 different
promotions running simultaneously! Eventually everything was sorted out and
we set off under sunny skies, but with a stiff breeze blowing in from the
sea. Eastern Star is a tricky course at the best of times, but the breeze
made things even more difficult, and a number of golfers were heard
bemoaning the number of balls they’d consigned to the watery depths.
The green keeper must have been having a bad day because some of the pin
placements were set in the most difficult possible positions, none more so
than the par three 13th hole, where it was set at the back left edge of the
green, on a 45 degree slope!
Tony Robbins continued his recent run of good form to beat Geoff Parker by a
single point, after Geoff carded a double bogey on the 18th. The breeze was
probably largely responsible for the fact that only two near pins were hit
on the day.
1st Tony Robbins (13) 36pts
2nd Geoff Parker (14) 35pts
3rd Gerry Cooney (14) 33pts
Near pins: Lee Butler and Gerry Cooney
Friday, Sept. 7, Crystal Bay B & C – Stableford
We set off to Sri Racha expecting to find the course waterlogged after heavy
rain the previous day and overnight, but in the event it was in surprisingly
good shape.
Buff (the boss of The Ranch) was playing his debut game with the Bunker
Boys, and led the field away, playing into a stiff but pleasant breeze. The
course was busy and consequently the outward nine was slow, but fortunately
the pace picked up on the inward nine.
Lee Butler had decided to revert back to using his old set of irons after
some inconsistent performances of late (read that as spraying the ball in
all directions), and the decision was certainly justified as he romped home
with the winning score of 40 points. Gerry Cooney continued his good run of
form to take second place ahead of Colin Greig
1st Lee Butler (13) 40pts
2nd Gerry Cooney (16) 38pts
3rd Colin Greig (8) 34pts
Near pins: Gerry Cooney, Paul Smith and Tony Robbins (2).
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society who now play
out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and
almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but
competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new
players are always welcome. Contact Buff on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663 for
all enquiries. The society is also in the process of resurrecting our
website which you can find at http://www.bunkersociety.com.

Pierrel shoots gem of a round at Emerald
PSC golf from The Growling Swan
Peter Blackburn
Tuesday, Sept. 4, The
Emerald – Stableford
After a late cancellation due to family sickness and one
“no show” we were still left with an excellent field of 22 golfers ready to
tackle the challenging Emerald Golf Course. It has been quite some time
since most of us had played there and after receiving mixed reports about
the course I for one was very much looking forward to playing there again.

John Pierrel, Bernie McCart &
Stephen Newton.
As we assembled at The Growling Swan we had many new &
old faces and welcomes were handed out to John Coombs & Ron Grafton from
Mandurah, Western Australia, Dave Neal from the U.K. and his lady Thientong
from Laem Chabang, Kevin Smith from Devon in the U.K. and Patrick Bellina
from France.
We departed the G.S. right on time at 8.30 am in 2
minivans and under overcast skies completed the journey in the good time of
45 minutes to find the course fairly quiet. After getting ourselves
organized and a practice putt or 2 for some we sent our first group away 20
minutes ahead of schedule at 9.40 a.m. and although still overcast there was
no real sign of rain and a fairly stiff breeze.

Thientong & John Coombs.
The course was looking very good and we soon found the
greens to be in great shape in fact a little too slick at times when putting
from above the hole. The areas in front of some of the greens were a touch
“ordinary” and caused a few problems when landing the ball short of the
mostly elevated greens but other than that the course was fine and is
certainly back on our monthly schedule now.
Although threatening at times the rain did stay away and
at no stage were the conditions too hot, mainly due to the stiff breeze
mentioned earlier. Proceeding at a fairly good pace we completed the round
in the fine time of four hours & five minutes which included a drink stop on
the second nine.
We were able to have 2 grades with five podium spots in
each. A Grade was for handicaps 0 to 16 and B Grade for 17 and over. We had
nearest the pins on all the par threes which were sponsored by The Growling
Swan, Mike Gosden, Ron Grafton & Max “Two Corsets” Bracegirdle. We also had
longest first putts on the 9th & 18th
greens which were kindly sponsored by Allan Tranekaer & Paul Quinn.
In the A Grade John Pierrel blitzed the rest of the field
and his 42 points was 8 points better than Mike Allidi (19 point back nine)
whose 73 off the stick enabled him to secure second spot in a count back
from Martin Todd (18 point back nine), both ending up with 36 points. Fourth
place went to Mike “Hunter” Gosden with 33 points and J J Harney was fifth
with 30 points.
In the B Grade Stephen Newton also won easily with 36
points and in a three way count back on 32 points Kevin Smith (19 point back
nine) finished second from Thientong Charoenrung (18 point back nine) and
Brian Noguer (16 point back nine) came fourth. Frank Donnelly completed the
B Grade podium with 31 points.
A Flight (0-16)
1st John Pierrel (14) 42pts
2nd Mike Allidi (1) 36pts
3rd Martin Todd (8) 36pts
4th Mike Gosden (12) 33pts
5th J J Harney (11) 30pts
B Flight (17+)
1st Stephen Newton (30) 36pts
2nd Kevin Smith (36) 32pts
3rd Thientong Charoenrung (20)
32pts
4th Brian Noguer (22) 32pts
5th Frank Donnelly (21) 31pts
Near Pins: 5th – J J Harney, 7th – Frank Donnelly,
13h – Paul Quinn, 15th – Dave Neal
Long Putts: 9th – Patrick Bellina, 18th – Brian
Noguer
The winner of the Compass Cap (awarded to the player with
the worst score on the day) was Bernie McCart, much to the relief of myself
& Ron Grafton and Bernie as usual received the award in good spirit and wore
the cap well into th evening.
Deefa the Dog’s master, Hunter was back from his trip and
took him for a walk, collecting many donations to charity from our generous
Growling Swan crew in the process. It was then back to The Growling Swan for
some cheap priced coldies and lots of fun & laughter.
Friday, 7th September –
Rayong C.C. – Stableford
Our normal Thursday game was cancelled due to the
inclement weather at Treasure Hill, as was the second course we tried,
Rayong Country Club, which was a shame as 29 golfers were signed up to play.
Not to be deprived of our second game of golf for the week we booked Rayong
Country Club for the next day and prayed that the weather this time would be
kind to us. We had 16 keen golfers prepared to play and we assembled at The
Growling Swan in readiness and as all turned up early we headed off 10
minutes ahead of schedule at 8.20 am.
We welcomed Marco Beer from Switzerland and Kevin Waycott
from Geraldton in Western Australia. It was also good to see veteran Hugh
O’Donnell once more having a game with us but sadly it was Bon Voyage to him
as he is off to Spain in the next few days.
I rang the course just after 8.00 a.m. and was told that
it was in fact raining there but we decided to take the chance anyway. The
weather was looking good as we travelled in sunshine and indeed when we
arrived at the course 40 minutes later it was fine although there were many
rain clouds overhead. There were very few other golfers there so it was
surprising to find that there weren’t enough carts to go round as we were
promised a special rate for one-to-a-cart so many of us had to double up,
which was no big deal anyway.
Our first group got away 30 minutes early at 9.30 a.m.
and ‘mark, lift. clean & place’ through the greens was the order of the day
as naturally the course was somewhat soggy due to the recent heavy rains,
but there were very few fairway puddles and the greens were fine although
not up to the standard of most of the other golf courses.
Most of our group were finding the going fairly tough and
it seemed obvious that anyone playing to their handicap or thereabouts would
feature on the podium at the end of the day and that indeed was the case. We
were extremely lucky with the weather throughout the round as there were
several rainy squalls but nothing that lasted long enough for us to stop
play at any time.
A group in front of us slowed us down in the latter part
of our round but we managed to complete the full round in four hours &
twenty minutes. In a nutshell it was great to be out there playing golf in
less than ideal conditions but we all agreed that it was a good day and
although the standard of golf was not the best it was well worth the trip.
We were able to have 2 grades with four podium spots in
each. A Grade was for handicaps 0 to 16 and B Grade for 17 and over. We had
nearest the pins on all the par threes which were sponsored by The Growling
Swan, John Coombs, Dave Neal & Alain Taddei. We also had longest first putts
on the 9th & 18th greens which
were kindly sponsored by Ron Grafton & John Coombs.
John Coombs won the A Grade with 33 points, 2 points
ahead of his good mate Ron Grafton in second place with Kevin Waycott third
on 29 points. With 3 players on 28 points a count back was necessary to
determine fourth spot and it was Martin Todd (17 point back nine) who
prevailed from Ebrahim (16 point back nine) and your writer (10 point back
nine).
The winner in B Grade was Thientong Charoenrung with a
fine 35 points and another lady, Duanjai Dusadad (Kae) was second with 33
points. Bernie McCart was third with 31 points & Dave Neal fourth on 30
points.
A Flight (0-16)
1st John Coombs (12) 33pts
2nd Ron Grafton (13) 31pts
3rd Kevin Waycott (10) 29pts
4th Martin Todd (8) 28pts
B Flight (17+)
1st Thientong Charoenrung (20)
35pts
2nd Duanjai Dusadad (36) 33pts
3rd Bernie McCart (31) 31pts
4th Dave Neal (22) 30pts
Near Pins: 5th – Peter Blackburn, 7th – Marco
Beer, 12th – Martin Todd, 16th – John Coombs
Long Putts: 9th – Ron Grafton, 18th – Roy Dayton
There was no Compass Cap award on the day due to a
“technical difficulty” and also Deefa the Dog was not present due to a prior
commitment. It was then back to The Growling Swan for plenty of cold ones
and a very relaxing evening watching the Hawthorn v Collingwood AFL game.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any
persuasion – low & high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We
generally play Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly
The Bunker Bar) in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at
8.30 a.m. For bookings or more information please contact Peter on 0806 351
