International Fireworks Contest blasts off Dec. 16-17

Fireworks light up Pattaya Bay during last year’s event.

Manoon Makpol

Hold your ears and open your eyes this November as nine nations light up the Pattaya sky for the final round of the Thailand International Fireworks Contest this weekend.

For the second year in a row, fireworks will be launched from floating platforms in Pattaya Bay, rather than the conventional spot on Bali Hai Pier. Teams from Australia, China, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Japan, Philippines, the United Arab Emirates and the United States will face off against Thailand to see which country can put on the most dynamic and colorful exhibition.

The Dec. 16-17 contest will actually be the fifth and final round in a two-year Ministry of Defense competition organized to honor Their Majesties the King and Queen. The first round was held in Thongthani in December 2009 and the first Pattaya exhibition was Aug. 14, 2010, two days after HM the Queen’s birthday.

Tourism Authority of Thailand Pattaya Director Athapol Wanakij said the musical show will feature more than 100,000 fireworks and be visible for three kilometers. About 100,000 people are expected to attend the show.
