R.I.P. Shawn Field

Stephen Beard

The week ended on an extremely sad note as the news came through from Khon Kaen that one of our oldest friends passed away during the night of May 1st.

Shawn Field, better known to hundreds in the Pattaya area as “Hoser”, was found in the early hours of Monday the 2nd having apparently suffered a seizure during the night.

Hoser will be remembered by many as one of the past owners of the old B52 bar on which the Pattaya Centre Hotel now stands in Soi 12 just off Pattaya Beach Road where he invented the world famous “Hoser Shake.” This consisted of 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream, fresh milk, 3 shots Mekong, 1 shot Khalua all blended with ice and served in a pint glass, two or three to be taken as a livener after a night on Walking Street or other late-night activities before and after breakfast.

He was also a regular runner with the PDRH3 in the old days and his last run was during February this year.

Shawn was also a big supporter of golf, sponsoring as he did the Hoser Classic in Khon Kaen every year on his birthday, and what he lacked in technique as a player was more than compensated by his enthusiasm, as can be seen in the photograph taken during last year’s event.

Shawn passed on whilst still in his mid fifties but he lived a lot longer than that, as many of his friends can attest. He will be sorely missed by his wife Noi and their three children and those friends he left behind, but the “Hoser Shake” will live forever.

AFG goes motor racing

Dr Iain Corness

The Automotive Focus Group (AFG) on the Eastern Seaboard had a very different networking evening at the end of April. Being a ‘stand-alone’ meeting, and not tied to one of the major chambers of commerce, there was a very relaxed atmosphere, and the 45 members and guests actually voted the evening as one of the best put on by the AFG.

The venue was the Bangkok Hospital Pattaya, in one of their meeting rooms, and the guest speaker was one of the AFG founding members, Dr. Iain Corness, who spoke on his 46 years of motor sport as a competitor, accompanied by some slides of motor racing way back then.

He reminisced on the lack of safety equipment and apparel, with his “race suit” in 1965 being a short sleeved shirt with his name embroidered on the pocket, with shorts and long socks. He showed the fireproof race suits worn today and the latest style of helmets with the HANS device to stop neck fractures. The helmet, which belonged to the CEA driver Thomas Raldorf, cost 35,000 baht, and Dr. Iain’s fireproof suit cost 30,000 baht. Motor racing is not cheap! As is often said, the way to make a small fortune in motor racing is to start with a large one.

In his 46 years, Dr. Iain has driven everything from small engined touring cars, sports cars, and sports sedans through to the 5 liter V8 Formula 5000’s. He admitted that he cannot give up motor racing, describing it as a “disease”. This year he is running a Mk1 Ford Escort in the “Retro” class at the Bira circuit and Bang Saen, describing it as the only ‘Retro’ car with a ‘Retro driver’! His main backing for this campaign is from Securitas and ESC (Steve Graham), CEA Projects (Kevin Fisher), AA Insurance Brokers (Peter Smith) and Cromwell Tools.

The meeting venue was sponsored by the Bangkok Hospital Pattaya and the food and drinks were supplied by Cromwell Tools (through committee man Shaun Burke) and CEA Projects (Kevin Fisher). At the end of the evening, Cromwell’s Shaun Burke presented Dr. Iain with a wide range of tools which should keep the Retro Escort going for many years.

It was certainly a relaxed evening, which was also graced by the famous South African singer PJ Powers who encouraged the AFG members to go and visit her “beautiful country”.

The success of the ‘stand-alone’ AFG meeting is in many ways a reflection of the fact that the AFG has come of age and is very much representative of the dynamic growth in the auto industry on the Eastern Seaboard.

Members visit the Cromwell display at the AFG meeting.

Bangkok Hospital Pattaya investigates ‘murder’ of abdomen

Bangkok Hospital Pattaya want to protect people from murder … of the abdomen.

The hospital’s Gastrointestinal and Liver Center organized a day-long workshop April 27 to teach people about stomach problems and abdominal cancer. Dubbed “Murder of the Abdomen,” the seminar also provided an overview of technology and techniques used to detect and treat such ailments.

Dr. Sompot Saelee, who treats gastrointestinal and liver disease, lectured about the risks and causes of abdominal illnesses.

There was also an exhibition of equipment, endoscopic cleansing booths, GL endoscopy, stomach disease detection and insurance offerings.

Harbor Mall motor show draws buyers, enthusiasts

Officials open the annual Harbor Motor Show in Laem Chabang.

Retailers sold more than 100 vehicles at the annual Harbor Motor Show in Laem Chabang.

Moderate- and high-priced compacts and pickups were on display through April 27 at the port-area shopping mall, as well as luxurious European and Asian sedans.

The fair also offered custom motorcycles from Japanese companies and rows of booths selling parts and accessories that drew large crowds.

Of course no motor show would be complete without scantily clad women and the Harbor Show was no exception, with coyote dancers, sexy car washes and foam parties. Goodyear tires and the Tiers racing team also put on a drift-driving show while Yamaha motorcycles sponsored a bike-stunt show.

Golfer gorges on Yorkies

A Yorkies 1kg stand pie. And it’s ALL mine.

Eileen and Norman

One of our golfers, Bob Pearson, a regular at Yorkies, said last week that he could eat a whole 1kg pork pie. Of course we didn’t believe him, and challenged him. I said if he could eat a whole one, I would personally pay for it. Bob rose to the challenge, and this afternoon, Thursday 28th April, at 2.30 p.m., Bob sat down in Yorkies restaurant to prove us wrong.

As you can see he is not a big chap, and is very fit and healthy. The staff was all watching with amazement as he demolished the 1kg stand pie.

He celebrated his victory with a glass of ice cold beer, and Norman has now re-named him hollow leg Bob.

If anyone else wants to rise to the challenge, the next size up is a 3kg gala pie!

Almost there…

Gone!

The key to tomorrow’s health - help and healing through the teaching of Bruno Groening

Free Public Lecture

“I had breathing difficulties and chest pains over many years. It was angina pectoris -my heart was sick. Overnight I became healthy,” M. Galante, MD from New York knows what he is talking about. This sixty year old doctor became healthy overnight from a severe chronic heart ailment.

The university halls in Toronto and San Francisco were filled in October 2008, and in Washington DC, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, and Cincinnati in 2009. Hundreds of Canadians and Americans wanted to seize the opportunity to attend this special event. Doctors from Europe, Russia, and North America stood together, backed by scientific evidence. Bruno Groening stated, “There is no incurable. There is a higher power which can help every human being.”

Help and healing are possible for all kinds of conditions such as osteoporosis, heroin addiction, depression, exhaustion, asthma, arthritis, decade long chronic pain, allergies, stomach and bowel pain and many other diseases. Doctors from all continents have joined together, reviewing and documenting healings of people in more than 70 countries. The healed people and the doctors have opened themselves to a healing power, which everyone can absorb effortlessly and without cost. This healing power surrounds the entire body. “You sometimes feel a streaming or tingling sensation. It is a very pleasant feeling,” states Dr. Professor Beketova from Kiev. “You can experience it now. Open your heart.”

Around the globe thousands of people have found their way to these lectures.

The basis for this worldwide healing phenomenon is the simple and unique teaching of Bruno Groening, who lived in Europe between 1906 and 1959. “Trust and believe, the divine power helps and heals,” he said again and again. Up to 30,000 people came to him in a single day. He spoke with clear and sincere words, and many in the audience became healthy. “Separate yourself from the illness. It doesn’t belong to you. I will help you reconnect to the divine power.” He left behind knowledge of the laws of a healing power that is so strong that it can help every living thing. People need to realize how to open their hearts and themselves to this all-pervasive energy. It is so easy and effortless that even children can do it.

The German medical doctor, Gerhard Blaettner, recalls, “My own patients, whom I had been treating for over a decade, came to tell me about their healings through the teaching of Bruno Groening. Using a traditional medical approach, I had applied every possible treatment to help them, but I had not been able to alleviate their chronic suffering.”

The Medical Scientific Group (MWF) is a part of the Bruno Groening Circle of Friends, and it includes doctors and representatives from other healing professions from around the world. The international Circle of Friends is responsible for passing on Bruno Groening’s teaching about healing and living on the spiritual path. The doctors present all their lectures and share out of gratitude for the help and healing they have received or witnessed personally. The entire worldwide effort is done voluntarily and on a donation basis.

The medical lectures will be presented in Pattaya by Dr. Knoeringer, MD, Germany, a member of the Medical Scientific Group (MWF) of the Bruno Groening Circle of Friends.

The lectures are FREE and open to the public. Donations are appreciated.
