‘Dolphins’ draw a blank against Osotsapa
Thai Premier League football 2011 season

Pattaya United’s Keisuke
Ogawa (17) shields the ball from Osotspa midfielder Khaled Kharroubi during
the first half of their match at the Physical Education Stadium in Chonburi,
Sunday, March 13.
Staff reporters
Pattaya United a.k.a. the ‘White &-Blue Dolphins’
welcomed visiting Saraburi outfit Osotspa M-150 team to an eerily quiet
Institute for Physical Education Stadium in Chonburi last Sunday evening.
United have been forced by the Thai FA to play two of their home fixtures
behind closed doors as a punishment for the crowd disturbances at the match
against Thai Port FC on Feb. 27.
To make matter worse for United, the hosts were also
without star striker Ludovick Takam for this game, the Cameroonian having
been injured in a friendly match against Chonburi FC last week, while
Osotspa were at full strength with no injury worries going into this
fixture.
With United missing the focal point of their attack and
Osotspa content to soak up any early pressure, it was not surprising that
chances were few and between in the first half and indeed it wasn’t until
the 24th minute that the hosts had their first attempt
on goal when Ithipol Poolsap somehow knocked the ball over the bar when it
seemed easier to score.

The visitors carved out their own golden chance in the
first half just before the interval when Pipat Tonkanya escaped his marker
before crossing to Brazilian Clayton Silva whose shot was smartly blocked by
Narit in the United goal.
Pattaya came out with renewed impetus in the second half
but although they controlled much of the possession they were still finding
it difficult to break down the stubborn Osotspa defence.
On the hour mark, and against the run of play, Tonkanya
almost gave the visitors the lead but he shot wide after rounding the
Pattaya keeper.
With both teams beginning to tire it was no surprise that
the game began to open up in the last 15 minutes of play and both Siriwong
and Singmanee for Pattaya, and Silva and Tonkanya for Osotspa had
chances to put their respective teams ahead but all failed to find the mark
from good positions.
In the end a 0-0 score was a fair result although United
will feel more disappointed at failing to secure a victory considering this
was, on paper at least, a home game for them.
United’s next match is this coming Sunday against TOT SC
at the Yamaha Stadium in Bangkok. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
While United were drawing a blank last weekend, local
rivals Chonburi FC were enjoying a goal fest against TOT with a 6-0 romp
that saw then head to the top of the table on goal difference above Army FC,
Buriram PEA and Police United.
Therdsak Chaiman netted a brace for the Sharks in the 6th
and 30th minutes and further goals from Adul Lasoh,
Chonlatit Jantakam, Kushida and Berlang completed the rout of bottom placed
TOT.
Newly promoted Sri Racha FC meanwhile secured a well deserved point in a
1-1 away draw at Sisaket FC.

Pattaya Cricket Club sink
Southerners in Premier League
A
must win fixture faced Pattaya Cricket Club against the Southerners from
Bangkok in the Bangkok Premier League last weekend.
Fielding a near full strength side PCC travelled to the
Thailand Cricket Ground in Bangkok to find a drying, greenish wicket and a
damp outfield.
The Southerners won the toss and elected to bat, but it
was the PCC bowlers who dominated the early proceedings. Usman and Salman
shared the new ball duties to great effect as a tight off stump line proved
enough to make scoring very difficult. So much so in fact that at the first
drinks break and after 3 power plays the score had been restricted to 31 for
1 from 13 overs. The only wicket was a result of a smart leg side stumping
by Sunny off a Salman leg stump yorker.
The pressure continued to mount as Leon ‘run out’ Bouter
and Shan ‘on my way’ Younas maintained a disciplined line and length. Leon
was turning the ball sharply and Shan’s left arm seamers moved around on the
responsive wicket.
The Southerners remained patient in an attempt to launch
a counter attack in the final third of the innings. Vaughan and Nathan had
built the platform and with score on 88 for 2 after 26 overs they were in
the position to so. Andy ‘boots‘ Emery and 14 year old Yogesh shared the
extra bowling duties to good effect and with Sunny at the other end the
Southerners struggled to mount any serious challenge at posting a
competitive total.
Once Vaughan and Nathan were removed, the incoming
batsmen found the conditions and bowling too difficult and the innings
finally closed at 150 for 8. All the bowlers recorded impressive figures and
Sunny finished with 4 wickets for 35 runs from his 7 overs.
PCC needed to start positively to assert their dominance,
so Leon promptly hit one straight to cover and was run out by 10 yards
without troubling the scorers. At least he was positive and lived up to his
nickname. Hansie struck two sweet boundaries before he was bowled by
Anderson for 14 and Adam Oyston chopped a sharply bouncing delivery from the
same bowler onto his stumps and PCC were 52 for 3.
From the start of the innings Sunny had been very
positive and he raced to 52 runs before top edging a catch behind. It was an
important innings in the context of the match and PCC had reached 81 for 4
with 17 overs still remaining.
The Captain Simon Philbrook joined Salman to maintain the
push for victory, but the Southerners had not given up hope of winning the
game. The pair consolidated the innings and then upped the run rate as Simon
started to drive and pull confidently on the rapidly deteriorating wicket.
Eventually, the PCC victory was secured with 3 overs remaining. Simon,
awarded the ‘man of the match’, finished 42 not out and Salman 21 not out.
It was a deserved 6 wicket victory and the result of a
tremendous bowling and fielding effort, backed up with a quiet, assured
batting display. As a consequence, the result keeps alive PCC’s ambition of
finishing in the top four, with the final league game of the season on
Sunday 27th March at the Royal Bangkok Sports Club.

City’s fine run continues
MBMG International League Div 1
Paul Frain
A thunderstorm just before Pattaya City’s match against
the German All Stars made conditions a lot harder for both teams at
Horseshoe Point last weekend.
The All Stars team were not to be underestimated as they
have established a habit of playing well against the top teams but City took
an early lead when a great cross field ball from Emmanuel Tshuma found the
league’s leading scorer, Peter Ndjanna, unmarked and he made no mistake to
put City one up.
The goal was followed by a period of play where City
began to show a mastery of the wet conditions and the All Stars keeper had
to make a couple of fine saves to keep his side in the game. Eventually
City’s pressure told and they doubled their lead through a second goal from
Ndjanna following a slick six man move.
Just before the interval City’s forward Dipita had the
chance to put the hosts further ahead but he delayed his shot and the chance
was gone, leaving City two up at the break.
After the interval City were given a reprieve after a
slip in their defence allowed one of the All Star forwards some time on the
ball but he dragged his shot wide from a good position.
The hosts soon got back into their rhythm and they scored
a third goal after Alan Mulbury’s fierce shot was only partially parried by
the All Stars keeper onto the back of a defender’s legs and into the net.
With a three nil lead City began to relax and they almost
gave a goal away when a terrible mistake in the defence left the All Star
forward clean through on goal but somehow City’s keeper got back to block
the shot. They had another scare near the end when the visitors hit the bar
but all said it was a comfortable and well deserved victory for City.
This was City’s third victory on the trot and they must
now hope to continue this winning run if they are to stand any chance of
taking this season’s championship.
The City Reserves team did not have a game last weekend
but they are at home this coming Saturday with a 4-00p.m. kick off at
Horseshoe Point, while the first team are on their travels on Sunday,
playing at Bangkok United.

River Kwai Trophy 2011
provides more thrills and spills
The historic and world-renowned Bridge over the River Kwai in Kanchanaburi
Thailand was the backdrop to this year’s Amarin Outdoor Unlimited River Kwai
Trophy Adventure Race and an all-new course for 2011 made use of the area’s
mountainous trails and scenic valley farmlands.

Athletes take part in the
2011 River Kwai Adventure Race.
The annual race, held this year on Saturday March 5, drew
126 teams of competitors from Thailand and abroad. Two separate racecourses
allowed participants to compete at either an Extreme or Adventure level
division. The organizers rate the Extreme division for experienced racers
and extremely fit competitors while the Adventure division is suitable for
weekend warriors or those athletes who are new to adventure racing.
The race was an alternating combination of physical
trials that tested each team in the areas of mountain biking, jungle
running, river kayaking, and swimming. In addition to these core disciplines
of adventure racing the competitors had to overcome a few surprise obstacles
along the course.
Event organizers provided a free shuttle bus for
competitors from Amarin Plaza in Bangkok to the race venue in Kanchanaburi.
Sumptuous accommodation at the Felix River Resort, a pre race briefing, a
post race gala dinner complete with entertainment and awards ceremony, and a
free goodie bag for each competitor expressed the level of organization and
detail that Ama-Events have committed to this event.
All teams were comprised of two members. Teams competed,
and were awarded trophies and prizes, in 5 different categories: Men, Women,
Mixed, Masters, and Grand Masters.
The winners of each category in the Extreme division were
as follows: Men’s: Klayten Smith & Chantaraboon (Jay) Kriengchaip; Women’s:
Sara McCosh & Annie Miniscloux; Mixed: Songphol Sripiboonbanjerd & Chothip
Gan-uam; Masters (combined age 80+): Jongsak Kaew-in & Siripong Pongsuwan;
and Grand Masters (combined age 100+): Rudolf Bermuehler & Osama Rajkhan.

Paralyzed golfer
demonstrates an iron will

Jens
Maspfuhl demonstrates his new Power-Golfer wheelchair.
Elfi Seitz
Jens Maspfuhl, a top golfer who is paralyzed from his
breast downwards organized a golf tournament at the Laem Chabang
international golf course on March 8 to demonstrate his new wheelchair for
handicapped golfers.
The special guest of honor at the event was German
ambassador Dr. Hanns Schumacher, who played in the same group as Jens after
the presentation of the new wheelchair.
The wheelchair, which was developed in Germany, can be
adjusted to many different positions and Jens showed that handicapped people
can actually stand in the chair in order to be able use their golf clubs
effectively.
Jens, who had a handicap 6 before his accident a couple
of years ago that left him paralyzed, is still able to play to a high
standard and has already won the German disabled golf championship four
times. His dream now is that the many disabled people who come to Pattaya
and enjoy the sport will now be able to join in playing golf here with the
aid of the new wheelchair.
After the presentation to dignitaries and the media, the
Para-Golf-Tournament took place and was characterized by friendship and
fellowship with competition for once taking a back seat.
For next year Jens is planning a major charity golf
project together with the TAT, which covered all the expenses at this year’s
tournament.
For more information about Jens and his amazing wheelchair go to
www.duk-hilfe.de or Tel. Jens on 087 058 4027.

German
Ambassador Dr. Hanns Schumacher, right, and Nittaya Patimasongkhro, left,
the chairperson of YWCA and Special Olympics for disabled children, talk to
Jens about his new golfing contraption.

‘Newell service’ is resumed
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s
Monday 7th
March Greenwood - Stableford
1st Gavin Knox (11) 34pts
2nd
Gordon Kerr (15) 33 pts
Normal service resumed! The field is always a bit more
modest on the second day of the society’s weekly back-to-back features and
this Monday was no exception. The scores were very modest as one would
expect after the grueling four day championship.

Bob Newell, left, receives
his low gross trophy from Lewiinski’s golf manager Colin Davis.
Gavin the clean up guy made the trip and took off with
the lion’s share of the loot. Gordon KO Kerr was just a stroke behind Gavin
on 33 points as he filled the flight. Lou Zigzag and Peter Hynard were a
shot further back, no count-back required, chin up Lou.
No 2’s were recorded so a rollover on Wednesday.
Wednesday, March 9, St.
Andrews - Stableford
A Flight
1st Paul Bray (4) 40pts
2nd Tore Eliassen (12) 34pts
3rd Francis Goyons (7) 34pts
B Flight
1st Michael Lenihan (17) 44pts
2nd Lou Szigligeti (19) 38pts
3rd
Mike Jeffreys (15) 35pts
The lure of the impeccably manicured St. Andrews and the
favorable sports day prices attracted a strong field as always, but that
didn’t prevent Lou Zigzag, who has got his chin off the floor, and Mike
Jeffreys, who needed the aid of a three-way count-back over Peter Henshaw
and Lawrie McBride from finishing on the B Flight podium. However the man of
the match Michael Lenihan came out to lead the entire field with a 44-point
brilliant performance.
A Flight was not about to go unnoticed as Paul Bray saw
his 40 points stand up for top spot. The calculator was out again to sort
out the minor places as four players were log jammed on 34 points. Tore
Eliassen emerged out of the heap to take the silver and Francis Goyons
rounded out the flight, leaving Ken Carron and Jim Ledwidge pot less.
Paul Bray and the Irish rover Seamus Cotter split the 2’s
pot.
Friday, March 11, Crystal
Bay - Stableford
A Flight
1st Silvio Bizzotto (12) 41pts
2nd Jack Grindvold (6) 37pts
3rd Gavin Knox (11) 35pts
B Flight
1st Andre Fortis (17) 39pts
2nd Barry Copestake (15) 38pts
3rd
Robin Peach (15) 34pts
It was off to the fine layout at Crystal Bay for the
final fixture of the week. Silvio Bizzotto produced the top score of the day
with a sizzling 41 points to take man of the match and A Flight honours.
Jack Grindvold took the silver with a solid 37 points and Gavin ‘you know
who’ rounded out the flight, gaining a count-back verdict over Francis
Goyons.
Andre Fortis penciled in one more digit than Barry ‘the
boot’ Copestake to take top spot in the B Flight and Robin Peach filled the
podium.
Silvio added two 2’s to his winnings along with Barry
Ingram, John Deaden and Michael Lenihan.
Finally, in case you were wondering about the headline,
we have to offer apologies to Bob Newell as in last week’s missive I wrongly
awarded him the converted low gross. It was of course a typing error and I
meant to report the coveted low gross, well spotted everyone and this week,
just to make amends, we have a photo of Bob receiving his trophy.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi
1, Beach road Soi/13 near to walking street. Anyone wishing to play with us
just pop in and add your name to the list otherwise or give Colin a ring on
089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

The 15th Pattaya AmAm Golf Tournament

The 2011 winning AmAm

4th Russell Exley (6), Phil

(C3) Mike McNaney; (C6) Al Keith
Technical Prizes: (A8) Yasuo Suzuki; (C2) Simon
Payne; (C7) Dave Clark; (C9) Evan Millar
2’s: Mikael Andersson, Steve Jones, Gary
Constable, Joe McArdle
The fifteenth Pattaya AmAm, held for the first time over
the testing A and C courses at Greenwood, proved to be a very well supported
and much appreciated event by those that took part.
The format as usual was Stableford scoring with handicaps
rounded to the nearest whole number after making a deduction of 25 %,
allowing two team member’s scores to count on each hole without restriction
on the number of times a player’s score could be counted.
The conditions for the day were very difficult following
a lot of rain during the previous days leading up to the competition, and
with ‘lift and place’ not the rule on the day it put a premium on long
carries from the tees.
A strong wind that strangely seemed to be against on
almost every hole added to the player’s difficulties and it was not
surprising that the end results were well below the normally expected level.
The visiting team from Ras Al Khaymer showed the value of
long and straight, as their top players Simon and Gary made a hard day look
somewhat easy on many of the holes, enabling the team to almost stroll home
three clear of the rest of the field.
The second placed team led by the inform Brian Libbey and
well supported by Yasuo Suzuki, Trevor Schirmer and Stephen Lewis, held off
a strong challenge from the third team ably led by Chris Voller and Mikael
Andersson.
Russell Exley’s team failed to maintain their momentum
through the closing holes to slip to fourth as Al Keith’s team took fifth
just another single point behind them.
Back at The Haven Stephen Beard announced the winners as Russell Exley
presented the trophies having thanked everyone that had assisted in
producing another successful team event, including the catering staff who
once again rounded off the day with a great buffet followed by quite a few
wet ones that went on late into the night.

Gary Constable scorches Green Valley
IPGC golf from The Haven
Sunday, March 6, St.
Andrews - Stableford
CSS74
1st Peter Skinner (9) 39pts
2nd Charlie Lapsey (9) 39pts
3rd Alan Costelow (13) 37pts
4th Mick Flynn (15) 36pts
5th
Russell Exley (8) 36pts
Peter Skinner has been experiencing something of a
golf renaissance over the last couple of weeks during which time his
handicap has tumbled from 11 to 8 with the real expectancy that it will
fall even lower before he is forced to return home to South Herts Golf
Club, who may well disregard his fine form while in the Land of Smiles.
This day was yet another example of solid application combined with a
very nice swing resulting in one more win to add to the several already
stashed away during this trip.

Gary Constable.
Charlie Lapsey had to settle for second after he lost
the count-back with Peter on the back six by a margin of 13 to 12 after
they had tied the nine on 19 a piece.
Alan Costelow slipped into third alone as Mick Flynn
won a count-back for fourth with Russell Exley on the last six 13 to 11
after drawing the back nine on 19 each.
The 2’s were shared by Peter Skinner and Russell
Exley with one each.
As usual the prizes were presented at the course in
the Driving Range Bar run by genial hosts John and Jeff Ryves.
Monday, March 7, Green
Valley - Stableford
CSS 72
Division 1 (0-13)
1st Gary Constable (2) 41pts
2nd Kevin Townsend (11) 38pts
3rd Yasuo Suzuki (10) 37pts
4th Peter Skinner (9) 37pts
Division 2 (14–21)
1st Max Gard (15) 39pts
2nd Gerald Decio (15) 35pts
3rd Stephen Lewis (18) 35pts
Division 3 (22+)
1st Al Rolnik (22) 38pts
2nd Evan Millar 23) 33pts
3rd Frank Dunstan (25) 33pts
4th
Peter MacKenzie (28) 33pts
Once again a large turnout meant the formation of
three divisions at the always popular Green Valley layout.

Peter Skinner.
In the first division Gary Constable made light of
the conditions, with the course playing fairly long following the recent
heavy weather in the area, with a stunning 69 gross off his 2 handicap
and a spotless 33 on the back nine that include three birdies and six
pars to add to the level par outward half, which ensured his first win
in Pattaya and presaged his winning team effort on the following
Wednesday in the Pattaya AmAm..
Kevin Townsend had been hoping to claim his first win
for some time but was unlucky to find Gary in such great form and
therefore had to settle for second place, with Yasuo Suzuki taking third
after a count-back of 18 to 17 that denied Peter Skinner another podium
position.
In the second division Max Gard returned another good
round to take top spot from Gerald Decio in second and Stephen Lewis in
third as the two latter players warmed up for the upcoming AmAm.

Al Rolnik.
Al; Rolnik continued his rehabilitation by taking the
third division with a two under handicap round that was good enough in
the conditions by five points to claim the top spot ahead of a three-way
count-back between Evan Millar who had 16, Frank Dunstan with 15, and
Pater MacKenzie with 14 as they finished second, third and fourth
respectively.
Whilst there were no 2’s in the second division,
there were plenty in the first division shared by Bob Heath Kevin
Townsend, Gary Constable, Simon Payne, and Yasuo Suzuki with two, and
they all received a minimal amount for their efforts with Yasuo at least
getting a double pittance.
Before presenting the prizes Stephen Beard welcomed
new members Eddie Egan, Dan Cappell, Dave Clark and Tim Dalton and also
welcomed back Frank Dunstan, Peter MacKenzie, Pat Prenderville, John
Sutcliffe, Simon Payne and Gary Constable. There was also a farewell for
Torild and Leif Lossius.
Friday, March 11, St.
Andrews - Stableford
CSS74
1stPeter Skinner (9) 41pts
2nd John Pierrel (13) 36pts
3rd Jimmy Slattery (11) 35pts
4th Don Scott (10) 35pts
5th Frank Dunstan (25) 33pts
6th
Bob Heath (13) 33pts
Following a heavy week of golf and apr่s golf, many
of the regular faces took a hard earned rest for the second visit in a
week to St. Andrews and the attendance may also have been affected by an
extra early tee off time. But those that made the effort were well
rewarded as the course had returned to tip top condition except for a
few greens that had been verticut and sanded.
Peter Skinner made it two on the trot at what he now
seems to think is his home course in Pattaya, with another scintillating
performance that saw him lead in the field by five strokes with no one
else able to break par. His score would have been even better without
the bogey on the 177th and a ball in the water off
the tee on the 18th, but perhaps the thought of a
7 handicap was just a little too much to contemplate.
John Pierrel took his first podium in Pattaya after a
very pleasing level par round that left behind a count-back for third
which Jimmy Slattery won with a better 19 to 16 over Don Scott in
fourth.
Frank Dunstan took fifth place as he just held off a
half hearted attempt by Bob Heath, winning the count-back by 16 to 15
after Bob had followed a steady level par front nine with a rather
weaker three over handicap.
There were no 2’s in either division.
Prior to the prize giving, Stephen Beard welcomed new
members John Pierrel and Neville Duncan and also welcomed back Jimmy
Cloy and Alan Taylor.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven
group you can contact mobile 084 782 4582 or call in to the hotel at 185

Flanagan on a flyer
at Khao Kheow
PSC golf from The Golf Club Sports Bar
Monday, March 7, Green
Valley – Stableford
1st Jim Dundon 39pts
2nd Henry O’Brien 37pts
3rd Peter LeNoury 35pts
4th Capt. Bob Finley 35pts
Near Pins: John Dearden
Twenty-five players today endured the heat and the
proverbial noodle stop groups, with Jim Dundon scoring his personal best 39
points. The consistent one, Henry O’Brien, finished a clear second with 37
points and Peter LeNoury knocked off Capt. Bob on count-back to finish
third.
The recent rains have helped the course shape up over the
last 2 weeks.
Wednesday, March 9, Khao
Kheow A & B - Stableford
1st Nigel Flanagan 40pts
2nd Robin Peach 38pts
3rd Tom Balch 36pts
4th Warren
Holland 35pts
Kaptain Klipboard was off on a visa run so John E. took
charge for a 28 player comp today. A short rain delay couldn’t dampen the
spirit of “Colts, Colts, Colts” Nigel Flanagan and his 40 point day. He
claims he could have been higher if only a few more putts had dropped.
Cheeky me thinks!
Robin Peach claimed second place with a fine 38 points
and Tommy Boy Balch found a short game to come third on 36 points just ahead
of Warren Holland who nipped John E. out of the placings on the dreaded
count-back.
Friday, March 11, Phoenix
Mountain & Lake - Stableford
1st Benn Nelson 36pts
2nd Vic Hestor 35pts
3rd Henry O’Brien 35pts
4th Alan
Thomas 35pts
Benn “Bam Bam” Nelson was the only player to shoot his
H/cap in a field of twenty-six players and his 36 points was best of the
frame. There was a pile up just a point back and many a count-back required
to settle the rest. Vic Hestor roared in with a back nine 19 points to claim
second and Mr. Consistent finished third after nudging out Alan Thomas and
Kaptain Klipboard.

Unlucky Jim - 41 loses out
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

Silky Oak Golf Course.
The Pattaya Golf Society paid its second ever visit to
Silky Oak at the Green Valley complex on Monday, 7th March with many in the
large group playing for the first time and curious to see which version of
the opinions they would support. The course was in good condition with
medium paced but very consistent greens and was empty, thus avoiding the
possibility of conflict and delays on the back nine fairways.
The field was divided into two flights at sixteen and
under and playing off the white tees the course was the shorter option.
In the top flight Wichai Tananusorn grafted for a level
par 36 points for third whilst Larry Bland went one better for second with
37 points. The flight winner was Wilf Latham and his 38 points reflected his
accuracy and length off the tee. He also recorded the only flight birdie ‘2’
on the par three fifth.
In the second flight Larry Ang recorded 36 points for
third place whist Jim Ferris raced into second with 41 points on his first
visit to the course. Unbelievably he lost out to Mr. Len who scored 42
points to follow his 41 point score on the group’s first visit in December.
And this on the eve of his admission to hospital for a minor operation which
would keep him off the golf course for maybe up to two months. The secret to
the round was his restricted swing in order to keep the offending hernia in
check, and it worked.
Fredy Braun almost fired an ace on the short fourteenth
but had to make do instead with the only ‘2’ in the second flight. The Booby
Bevy went to regular visitor Harry Langkoff for his low key effort.
The jury is still out on Silky Oak but it seems the two
camps see a challenge on one hand and an amusing distraction on the other.
Maybe, like St Andrew’s, playing it more and off the challenging yellow tees
will improve the golf product there and it will become a regular fixture in
Pattaya golfers’ schedules.
Other results this week: On Wednesday 9th, the stableford
merit event at Eastern Star was won by local member Saranya Riley with 36
points, followed by Jim Ferris with 35 and Richard Bannister with 34. On
Friday 11th, the stableford event at Bangpra saw Stan Kure take the top
flight victory with 37 points, with Rick Schramm and Chris Smith second on
32, whilst the second flight belonged to Pat Murphy with 41 points, a long
way ahead of runners-up Jim Ferris and Glenn Martin, both on 33 points.

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, March 7, Pattaya
Country Club - Stableford
We were just under our minimum quota for three divisions
for the men so the cut today was 5-18 and 19 plus and of course the ladies
as well. Amazingly we teed off 40 minutes ahead of schedule and there were a
few adjustments from the original start grid drawn up at Siam Cats in the
morning.

Pattaya Country Club winners:
Jerry McCarthy and Rudiger Schafer.
He hadn’t played to his handicap for a long time but
playing off 20 today, Rudi Schaefer scored a remarkable 46 points to win
division 2. Allu Lahteenhaki came in second with 41 points and Fred Duffy
claimed third with a ‘meagre’ 37 points.
Jerry McCarthy won division 1 with 39 points, and playing
off 10 Risto Hakkenen took second five points behind and Kari Kuparinen was
third on 32.
Mam Morel was smiling as she beat Noi Emmerson on a 19/17
back-nine count-back after they both came in with 35 points each.
Georges Faber birdied the 12th to
take the only pot in division 1 in the ‘2’s while in division 2 two birdies
on the 7th are shared by Jerry McCarthy and Burnie
Sinclair.
Near pins went to Noi Emmerson, Jean Bruneau, Yves
Bossett, Burnie Sinclair, Georges Faber, Kari Aarnio, Kari Kuparinen and Jim
Connelly.
Wednesday, March 9,
Mountain Shadow - Stableford
Our monthly visit here and a tough challenge as always,
so there were no ladies playing at all today, just two divisions for the men
with the cut 6-16 and 17+ in division 2.
The greens here are still probably the slickest we play
and the pin placings today were less harsh since our last visit. We have
been lucky with the weather of recent with these spasmodic downpours, after
nine holes the clouds thickened in the background and there was a murky sky
approaching, we had a short sharp burst of rain for the third group out as
they came up the eighteenth but this only lasted for 5 minutes.
Tony Thorne, playing off 12, scored a remarkable 23 on
the back nine to come in with 42 points to win division 1. Toni Lonnquest
was in second with 39 points and the Estonian boy Raivo Velsberg took third
with 34.
Jim Connelly topped division 2 with 34 points, beating
Paul Chabot by 2 points and in third place was Allu Lahteenhaki with 30.
Georges Faber was in the frame yet again but only for the
‘2’s with a birdie on the 17th for the only prize in
division 1, while a rollover ensues to Emerald in division 2.
Near pins went to Tonni Lonnquest (2), Mauri Friman, Kari
Kuparinen, Randy Flello, Jim Connelly, Georges Faber, Brian Howe
Friday, March 11, Eastern
Star – Stableford
We had our largest turnout ever today with 6 ladies and
54 men showing up for our Eastern Star rollover kitty extravaganza. There
were no problems overnight with this amount of players and all of the 15
four-balls turned up on time with no cancellations or no shows. The equal
cut in the cards today was 5-14 in division 1, 15-18 division 2 and 19+
division 3.
Thirty eight points was the best recorded score of the
day for Alan Pilkington in division 1. Chris Voller, now off 5, beat Adi
Mayer with a handicap of 6, 12/11 on a back six count-back for the runner up
spot after they both finished with 36 points.
Frank Kelly took out division 2 with 36 points, Dennis
Scougall was second one point behind, and Andy Baber beat the Irish boy
18/16 on the back nine for third after they both scored 34 points, there
were cheers all round.
William Chang won division 3 with 35 points ahead of Paul
Chabot in second one point behind and Terry Redding took third on 33 points.
Noi Emmerson was on the podium again, winning the ladies
division with 34 points while Josie Monks beat Mam Morel 14/13 on a
count-back for second after they both returned scores of 31.
There were no ‘2’s in the ladies division and with this
field out today there was only one ‘2’ in division 1, well done Adi Mayer on
the 6th. Lee Casey birdied the 6th
and Dennis Scougal the 13th to win the max in division
2 after three rollovers.

Marksmen required at Mountain Shadow
PSC golf from The Fairways Golf Society
Monday, March 7, Treasure
Hills - Stableford
This was probably the hottest day of the year so far and
very humid. The heat and the course took their toll as nobody managed to
play to par. Two players pulled out after only nine holes, one suffering
from exhaustion and the other with a damaged wrist. It was clear there were
going to be no high scores recorded today as the players straggled off the
last green, all complaining of the heat and limping away to the dressing
rooms for a nice cool shower.
The successful near pin winners today were Patrick
Engles, Steve Durey, Terry Droy and Phil Mitchell.
A Flight
1st Brian Beaupre (5) 34pts
2nd Brian Neals (16) 33pts
3rd Phil Mitchell (6) 32pts
B Flight
1st Steve Durey (19) 34pts
2nd Roy Taylor (21) 33pts
3rd Joop Medze (17) 32pts
Wednesday, March 9, The Emerald - Stableford
Lots of rain again today which caused a half hour
stoppage, but the course was in really good condition even though the greens
were a little on the slow side.
Only one player managed to play to his handicap, Brian
Caplin with a solid 36 points, with the rest of the field well strung out
behind. The near pin winners were Brian Neal, John Lay, Brian Caplin and
Mike Bobkin.
1st Brian Caplin (16) 36pts
2nd Joop Medze (17) 33pts
3rd Phil Mitchell (6) 32pts
4th Mike Bobkin (18) 31pts
Friday, March 11, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
We arrived here today to find the greens even more
difficult than usual with the pin placements in some really treacherous
positions. Only one player Phil Mitchell seemed able to cope with them. Most
of the players were 3 and even 4 putting and one player, whose name I won’t
mention, even 5 putted one green. But everybody agreed that this was a good
warm up for the P.A.G.S. tournament at the end of the month.
Near pin winners today were Ning Neal (2), Joop Medze and
Phil Mitchell.
1st Phil Mitchell (6) 36pts
2nd Pier Cere (11) 31pts
3rd
Patrick Engles (17) 29pts

O’Flynn tackles Treasure Hill off the blacks
PSC golf from The Caddy Shack
Wednesday, March 9,
Treasure Hill – Stableford
A round 2 dozen players tacked Treasure Hill off the
white tees on Wednesday. Heavy rained interrupted the round but it didn’t
seem to affect scratch player John O’ Flynn much as playing off the black
tees (the full length of 7,240 yards) on his own, he recorded a superb 3
over gross round to take out the A Flight - a great effort on a damp course.
A Flight
1st John O’Flynn (0) 33pts
2nd Clive Bruce (9) 32pts
3rd Ian Covill (13) 31pts
B Flight
1st Bruce Tollitt (18) 27pts
2nd Dave Strang (18) 26pts
3rd John Knight (18) 24pts

Friday, March 11, St.
Andrews – 4-Man Scramble
A large compliment of 32 players formed 8 teams in a
scramble event at St. Andrews on Friday. We enjoyed perfect conditions on a
perfect course.
The foursome of Graham Beaumont, Jeff North, Vincent
Smyth and Mark Williams proved to be the strongest of the field as they
returned a fine net 57.1 to win the event. The two teams following them had
to be separated by count-back after they both finished on net 60.2.
1st Graham Beaumont, Jeff North,
Vincent Smyth, Mark Williams (3.9) net 57.1
2nd Mike Pledger, Dave Hewson, Paul Wallia, Derek
Mower (5.8) net 60.2
3rd John Knight, Remaro, Paul

Dangle comes good at Emerald
The Backyard Golf Society

Dangle
celebrates his victory with the staff outside Mama’s Bar.
After being washed out the previous week it was good to
get out on to the golf course for our weekly game at Emerald. With all the
change in personnel over the last few weeks it was good to arrive at the
course with 11 players, of which 10 were in all completions.
After getting out on time, Dangle finally produced the
golf that we all know he is capable of but rarely shows. His winning score
of 37 points was 4 shots ahead of the field and he snagged 5 skins as well.
To make his day complete Micky tried his hardest to take away the unwanted
tag of lowest ever score for the Backyard Golf Society but scored 2 points
on the final hole to tie Dangle’s record at 15.
Keeping the money in the family, Broken Wing took nearest
the pin and the other skin results were as follows: John Mac (3), Broken
Wing (3), Geoff (3), Bernie (1), Andy Oz (1), which left 2 rollovers for
this week.
Finally, after 1 year, Bernie is leaving for the UK with “O” so good luck
to them from everyone at the society.

Edgar eases to victory with net 66
PSC golf from The Bunker Bar
Monday, March 7, The
Emerald - Stableford

Rab
McDonald, front left, celebrates with Geoff Parker, right, and Mashi after
winning the A Flight at Bangpra.
Emerald was in good condition as usual and the course was
pretty busy as we had to tee off on the 10th.
Jerry Waselenkof had one of his better days and in a
single flight he won by one point ahead of Mike Corner (who said he was
determined to win on his last game before returning home)! The minor
placings were decided on a count-back with the unlucky Dave Ashman missing
out altogether.
1st Jerry Waselenkof (14) 37pts
2nd Mike Corner (21) 36pts
3rd Tore Eliason (12) 32pts
4th Rab McDonald (12) 32pts
Near Pins: Jerry Waselenkof, Rab McDonald, Chris Cox, Tore Eliason.
Wednesday, March 9, Green Valley - Medal
Green Valley is always a challenging course but, playing
a Medal round for a change, Paul Edgar had no problems. Paul had a fabulous
round and won by 5 strokes ahead of Mark Stanley.
William Macey usually does well on the course where he is
a member but he lost out on a count-back today to John Graham.
1st Paul Edgar (17) net 66
2nd Mark Stanley (12) net 71
3rd John Graham (10) net 74
Near Pins: John Hughes, William Macey, Gerry Cooney, Dave Ashman.
Friday, March 11, Bangpra - Stableford
Bang Pra is one of the favourite courses with the Bunker
Boy’s and today’s large turnout proved the point.
In two flights and with the cut set at handicap 14, John
Hughes was happy to be in the B Flight as he won with 35 stableford points.
Gary Warburton took the runner up spot on his first day of golf back in
Thailand and Paul Edgar came third a point further back.
Rab McDonald had a cracking round to win the A Flight
ahead of Gerry Cooney and Mashi.

Dale & Herb go toe to toe
PSC golf from The Three Sisters Bar

Winner
Dale Murphy, left, with runner up Herb Ishinaga.
After taking a trip up country for 10 days, Dale Murphy
was again on form as he slipped by Herb Ishinaga to win the day at Pattaya
Country Club last Wednesday. Dale and Herb were playing in the same group
and going stroke for stroke. Both had 16 points on the front nine and 21 on
the back nine to wind up with 37 points each. It was a close call as Dale
won on the last six holes with a score of 16 to 15 to edge out Herb on the
count-back.
Matt Millar fell into third place with 33 points as the others trailed
in, with Paul Donahue bringing up the rear followed by Eddie Kristianson.
All had a good time golfing followed by a great bowl of chilli beans and
hotdogs.
Jeff & Dave have doubles
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday, March 8, Rayong
C.C. - Stableford
Tuesday we ventured out along the route 36, turning off
to visit Rayong C.C. The course was in good order, representing good value
with PSC vouchers, too bad the weather could not do the right thing for us.
After about an hour’s play, the heavens opened up and everyone had to take
cover as the greens became unplayable, with some lightning also around.
After 40 minutes or so, it was back to normal and away we all went again.
Best to handle the conditions over the 18 holes was Jeff
Wylie (7) with 35 points, ahead of Tony Chetland (18) who got second with 32
after edging Dave Edwards on count-back 18 to 15.
Near pins were picked up by Ron, Dave and Jeff, with one
going to Banglamung Boys Home after no-one knocked it on the green.
Thursday, March 10,
Plutaluang - Stableford
Thursday was a trip to Plutaluang, where despite
threatening skies we made it around dry. Again it was Jeff Wylie (7) on top
with 35 points, edging out Bob Edwards (13) on count-back 19 to 14. Third
place prize money went to Dave Edwards (14) with a paltry 25 points, but
still shows there were some pretty poor scores floating around out there.
Near pins were secured by visitors Elizabeth Middleton
(1), husband David (2), with Graham Hiskett grabbing the tough South 7.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf usually on
Tuesdays & Thursdays, although we do sometimes change to suit a Public
Holiday. Hope to see you there. Cheers & good golfing!

Maiko makes hay at Crystal Bay
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Derek Brook
Tuesday, March 8, Crystal
Bay – Stableford
There still seems to be quite a few golfers here, however
on this day we noted ‘The Browns’ had gone, this obviously gave the rest of
us an opportunity, particularly as Rob had played so well he is now down to
a 5 handicap. So we lesser mortals now stood a chance.

Tuesday’s winners and runners up with one of Bert’s finest.
We had a full house and Bert’s was it’s normal hive of
activity with many tucking into his ‘golfers breakfast’ and the rest having
a cup of coffee or tea, then into cars and down to Crystal Bay. This course
is straight down Sukhumvit, in fact so easy is it to find even Keith, our
own coach driver arrived safely.
Soon through reception we were quickly changed and out
onto the first tee, which on this day was the C Nine, then onto the A Nine.
We had our normal deluge when we were, fortunately, just finishing the A9,
and the home drink stop was packed, but the squall soon blew over and then
we were onto A1. Mind I think we were out a bit early as when we got to the
green the lightning really let go and we quickly took refuge for a while in
a very well located seating area.
Not much to say about the course, it was Crystal Bay in
reasonable condition, the weather apart from a downpour and lightning was
really good. Nice temperature and no problem.
The speed of play was excellent, but with the rain it was
still a long round. Surprisingly the ground was quite firm and carts could
more or less go anywhere. However the whole set up here reminds one of how
excellent this course used to be. Faded glory, but still worth a visit.
Back at Bert’s a little late, the golfers were tucking
into the ‘golfers special’ then onto the presentation. We only had one real
star and as is normal these days the A Flight were better than the B Flight.
In the A Flight, 0 to 17, the winner by a mile was Doug
Maiko with 44 points, whilst in second was your scribe with 36 points and in
third was Richard Kubicki with 35 points. In the B Flight the winner was
Kenny Chung with 35 points ahead of Jack Robertson with 33 points, and in
third was Tom Cotton with 29 points ahead of Keith Phillips on count-back.

Near Pins: Carole Kubicki, Tom Cotton, Derek

It’s a Bjarne blitz
PSC golf from The Cafe Kronborg
Peter Blackburn & The
Drut
Monday, March 7, Pleasant
Valley –Stableford
At 0815 hours thirty four golfers from the Cafe’ Kronborg
answered the famous call from the Admiral of load ‘em up.
Hitting off the white tees at 0925 hours the first group
completed the journey in four hours and 20 minutes. The weather was warm the
course in good condition and the greens played truly.

Monday
flight winners: Doug Maiko, left, Somkit O’Brien, center, and Bjarne Kjaer,
right.
Our resident apple crumble devotee Graham Buckingham was
away playing at Kabinburi so we will await his report re adventures in the
bunkers at that course.
Speaking of bunkers, if Rommel had encountered the ones
at Pleasant Valley he may never have got out of Casablanca. Some of them
need a bigger makeover than Brigitte Bardot does a face lift.
We welcomed Peter and Somkhit O’Brien from Bangkok, and
Jens Erik and Henny Nielsen from Denmark.
In the A flight the man from Rhode Island Doug Maiko
handed in a great 43 points for first place. Arne-Max Pederson posted 39
points for second spot whilst Richard Kubicki and John Howard scored 36 and
35 points respectively for a podium finish.
In the B flight Bjarne Kjaer with a 17/26 point split for
forty three points easily took first place and reckoned he was as flash as a
rat with a gold tooth.
Dave Richardson, who is off the sauce for three weeks to
give the brain cells a chance to regroup, posted 40 points for second to
edge out Leif Kirkegaard on the same score whilst Jesper Rasmussen on 38
points finished fourth.
The C flight saw Somkhit O’Brien as excited as a white
ant on Long John Silver’s leg score 38 points for first place. Kenny Chung
was relegated to second spot on the same score whilst Henry Wong and Kirk
Sandgaard handed 32 points to round out the flight.
Post game comments included one from Peter O’Brien when
he said “today my Frankie Lane wouldn’t Bondi Junction.” Translated it meant
his brain didn’t function.
Niels Hansen said his game was as limp as a drag queen’s
handshake and his 27 point return confirmed same.
A Flight (0–15)
1st Doug Maiko (14) 43pts
2nd Arne-Max Pedersen (15) 39pts
3rd Richard Kubicki (11) 36pts
4th John Howard (12) 35pts
B Flight (16–22)
1st Bjarne Kjaer (21) 43pts
2nd Dave Richardson (22) 40pts
3rd Leif Kirkegaard (20) 40pts
4th Jesper Rasmussen (20) 38pts
C Flight (23+)
1st Somkhit O’Brien (28) 38pts
2nd Kenny Chung (23) 38pts
3rd Henry Wong (26) 32pts
4th
Kirk Sandgaard (35) 32pts
Near pins went to Henny Nielsen on 5, Richard Kubicki on
8, Leif Kirkegaard on 13, and Ulla Ravn on 17.
The St Kilda’s saw Dave Richardson on the 9th
and Henry Wong on the 18th successful.
The Coveted Compass Cap was unavailable today however
Deefa did the business gathering donations for the needy in Pattaya.
Thursday, March 10, Khao
Kheow B & C – Stableford
A very good turnout of 34 Golfers assembled at Caf้
Kronborg in preparation for the journey to the classy Khao Kheow golf
course. Welcomes were handed out to Fred Tam of Belgium and your writer who
was returning from a 4 week break after suffering a heart attack. Being
organiser of the day I couldn’t resist stealing The Admiral’s glory by
announcing “let’s go” at 0813hrs just a couple of minutes before the
scheduled departure time.
We arrived at the course after a super quick journey of
38 minutes, mainly due to the lack of red light stops. Our scheduled tee
time was 1000hrs but we were kindly asked to tee off at our leisure and our
first group hit off at 0925hrs. The weather was fantastic, the course looked
a picture as usual and the greens, although a little slower than normal were
in tip top condition.
Three of our opening group played fairly good golf whilst
yours truly was mainly concentrating on “survival”, which I did without any
problems (it’s much less strenuous in a golf cart of course).
Highlights of our day had to be Mick O’Connor’s 40
points, The Admiral’s chip in for a birdie from 40 yards out on the last and
my 40 foot putt for a birdie on the “Alcatraz” par 3 (B8).
Our round was completed in the excellent time of four
hours & twenty minutes which included a couple of drink stops.
This testing course once again took the honours as only 3
players managed to better their handicaps. It seemed to be the same old
names on the podium once more and it’s good to see so many players
performing consistently well.
The A Flight was won by Niels Hansen with Doug Maiko
finishing second on a count-back from Mike Gosden. Kevin Callaghan beat
fellow Aussie Martin Todd for fourth place on a count-back.
Bjarne Kjaer took out the B Flight and another count-back
saw Leif Kirkgaard beat Elias Magnusson for second place. Brian Gabe
finished in fourth place.
C Flight was well won by Mick O’Connor, a couple of
points ahead of Somkhit O’Brien, while Kenny Chung finished in third spot
from Carole Kubicki in fourth place.
A Flight (0-15)
1st Neils Hansen (14) 37pts
2nd Doug Maiko (14) 35pts
3rd Mike Gosden (10) 35pts
4th Kevin Callaghan (11) 34pts
B Flight (16-21)
1st Bjarne Kjaer (21) 35 pts
2nd Leif Kirkgaard (20) 34pts
3rd Elias Magnusson (18) 34pts
4th Brian Gabe (17) 31pts
C Flight (22+)
1st Mick O’Connor (23) 40pts
2nd Somkhit O’Brien (28) 38pts
3rd Kenny Chung (23) 36pts
4th Carole Kubicki (22) 35pts
Near Pins: B3 Mick O’Connor, B8 Brian Gabe, C3
Kenny Chung, C8 Graham Buckingham
Long Putts: B9 Kjeld Ravn, C9 Peter O’Brien
The Coveted Compass Cap was presented by San Miguel Stu to newcomer Fred
Tam and your scribe was very thankful for Fred’s participation in the
competition. Deefa The Dog did well once again and received more donations
for some worthy Pattaya Charity.

Lawton leads the way at Pattaya Country Club
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Wednesday’s winners at
Phoenix:
Paul Greenaway with Raleigh Gosney and Jack Piercefield.
Monday, March 7, Burapha -
Stableford
Thirty-one Outbackers played the A and B loops, the
course being in its usual great condition, and it was a pleasure to play
these nines for a change. There was no breeze and it was as hot as hell just
to remind us the wet season is coming.
There was a few new faces today, amongst them Robin Peach
and Jason Cole and welcome back to some familiar regulars, Dave Hewson from
the UK and Aussie boys, Rod Woodriffe and Mark Holden. Alan Pilkington and
friends also joined us again today but we have to say goodbye to Martin
Grimoldby who is on the way home.
Have you ever gone to a golf course and waited on the
first tee for your playing partners to get there? You’re all excited as you
haven’t played for a while, get your driver out of the bag, tee up the ball
and get ready to have a hit. You address the ball but something is wrong –
then you finally work out you have left handed clubs rather than your own
right handed! Yes a true story, that happened to one of our players today
whom shall remain nameless to prevent any embarrassment.
Brian Libbey’s 39 points was the day’s top score to win
Div A from a resurgent Capt’ Bob (36pts) having his best round for the last
two months; maybe he is coming right just in time for the Chiang Mai
challenge. Ivan Plunkett also played well to take Div B with 35 points on
count-back from newbie, Robin Peach.
Ken Priddy didn’t go home empty handed either but it
wasn’t for a podium finish, it was for the lowest recorded score of the day,
19 points, for which he received an Outback towel.
There were three ‘2’s from Dave Hewson, Robin Peach and
Martin Grimoldby.
Div A (0-13)
1st Brian Libbey (9) 39pts
2nd Bob Philp (10) 36pts
3rd Martin Grimoldby (6) 36pts
4th Allan Pilkington (10) 35pts
Div B (14+)
1st Ivan Plunkett (21) 35pts
2nd Robin Peach (15) 35pts
3rd Benn Nelson (14) 34pts
4th Mark Holden (19) 34pts
Tuesday, March 8, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
An excellent field again this week, as 28 players turned
out at the local friendly course, where other than the Outbackers, there
were few to be seen. The course was very green and well presented, even if
the greens were a little slow but there are still signs of plenty of ongoing
work.
Miraculously we didn’t get wet with storms all about, but
the temperature drop was welcome, giving way to very comfortable playing
conditions which reflected in the nine players all playing to handicap or
better, making a tough school out there today.
Mike Allidi again gave this course a lesson, shooting a
fabulous 70 gross for his 40 points to win Div A from his playing partner,
Guy Canipel, who was beaten on count-back by Paul Smets, with 39.
However the round of the day has to go to John Lawton,
who shot a best ever 84 gross, to amass an amazing total of 44 points to win
Div B easily from the in-form JinJo O’Neill on 39, with Barry Chadbourn
turning round a bad start with only 14 points on the front nine, romping
home with 23 on the back to take third place from Doug Chalkley.
There were four ‘2’s from Mike Allidi, Noy Kamsantia and
Jeff Bunn had two.
Div A (0-18)
1st Mike Allidi (2) 40pts
2nd Paul Smets (17) 39pts
3rd Guy Canipel (6) 39pts
4th Tony McDonough (14) 38pts
Div B (19+)
1st John Lawton (20) 44pts
2nd Martin O’ Neill (28) 39pts
3rd Barry Chadbourn (19) 37pts
4th Doug Chalkley (22) 37pts
Wednesday, March 9, Phoenix - Stableford
Thirty-three players travelled to Phoenix, where the
Outback has not played for nearly six months. We played the Lake and Ocean
nines, which were in great condition and the greens were very true and fast.
Unfortunately the day was spoilt for some, as the skies
opened up on the last couple of holes. All groups could have easily finished
as Paul Greenaway’s group set a very fast pace but not all groups kept up
with the group in front and therefore not everybody was able to finish;
commiserations especially to Fidge Button who had 34 points but could not
play out 17 and 18 as the greens were flooded and time was running out.
Top score of the day and winner of Div A was the pace
setter, Paul Greenaway (10) with 37 points, which was a great round of golf
off the white markers. Second was Jeff Bunn with 35 points, also off 10, and
third was Stephen Mann (9), the organiser for the day, with 33.
Welcome back to the B Division winner, Raleigh Gosney
(17) with 35 points and his mate Chris Dopp, who was warming up ahead of
Chiang Mai. Second was Steve Plant with 34 off 14 who beat Fidge Button on
count-back also with 34, which was not a bad achievement bearing in mind,

Friday, March 11, Khao Kheow - Stableford
Twenty-eight Outbackers played A and B from the yellows
and as usual it was the course that won on the day. Capt’ Bob, who is fast
becoming a drink masochist, allowed himself to be Lawton’d once again but
this time by both by Mr. and Mrs., as it was off for an early drink, well
before tee time. Needless to say, Mr. Singha took over well before the final
few holes, a fact that was very evident in John Lawton’s card with 19 on the
front and only 9 on the back.
We were joined by the TIAC boys from Perth playing the
last round of their four-day tournament, so there were 14 groups all told,
the greens were great and you couldn’t get a bad lie anywhere on the
fairways and also great value for money.
Only two guys played better than handicap, Raji and Jeff
Bunn, who took first and second places in Div A with 39 and 37 points
respectively, with three players tied on 34 vying for the minor honours. Div
B was not quite so good with 33 points being the top score from Lawrie
McBride and Raleigh with Suzi and Barry taking third and fourth, two points
further back on 31.
There were three ‘2’s from Owen Walkley, Tony Gliddon and
Barry McIntosh
Div A (0-14)
1st Amarjit Banwaitt (7) 39pts
2nd Jeff Bunn (10) 37pts
3rd Steve Mann (9) 34pts
4th Steve Plant (14) 34pts
Div B (15+)
1st Lawrence McBride (17) 33pts
2nd Raleigh Gosney (16) 33pts
3rd Suzi Lawton (16) 31pts
4th Barry McIntosh (18) 31pts

Gordon glorious;
Volpi victorious
Phoenix Tuesday & Friday (PSC) Group

Tuesday’s winners pose for a photo with the staff at the Relax Bar. Sergio
Volpi is seen holding the special prize of a voucher donated by KPK Foods
Ltd.
Mike Gerrard
After injuring my shoulder trying to learn how to hit a
ball correctly (we really should not think we can become better golfers at
this time of life), yours truly had to scratch from the game last Tuesday,
so it was purely as administrator that I attended.
How lucky the rest of the group were, because as we all
assembled to get to the tee, so the heavens opened. And how they open here!
Forty minutes later the deluge receded and it was decided by all players to
give it a go.
After I had seen the players off on the Lake/Ocean course
I went to the office to enquire what was the full meaning of the huge sign
on the registration desk which stated “No Rain Check.” For everyone’s
information, at Phoenix it appears to mean that once you have paid your
fees, there will be no refund, even if you have not started. I suggest to
everyone that if the weather looks a little threatening that you inquire at
the registration office before parting with your money.
Much to everyone’s delight, on this day the weather ended
up being very kind and not a drop more rain was experienced.
Later we made my way back to the Relax Bar for the
presentation. We first welcomed the new players to the group, Mike Wing, Ray
Spence and Tony Hill, after which we moved on to the prize giving.
As the headline states it was Stuart Gordon who won the A
Flight with a fine 38 points, 3 shots better than the chasing pack, of which
there were three on 35 points. The best back nine was from Richard Baldwin
to give him second place. Joint third spot was awarded to two players who
could not be separated, Hugh Byrne and Barry Copestake.
B Flight was a walkover for Sergio Volpi with 40 points,
and this after being cut 3 shots last week. As we have said before, when you
hit form it seems to last a couple of weeks. I am sure Sergio will come back
to reality soon!
Second place went to the Cheshire grin man Patrick Browne
who scored a respectable 37 points (normally good enough to win) with David
Czernie claimed third spot with 35 points.
Near pins went to Stuart Gordon, Landis Brooks, John
Bartley, and Patrick Browne.
The lucky draw winners were Tony Hill (Free drink) and
Bob Neylon (free massage), both prizes being kindly donated by our hosts The
Relax Bar. The other lucky draw of 50 baht went to Chris Coffey.
Friday golf has been a bit thin on the ground lately due
to many things going on, but we have tee times booked for every Friday at
noon. It seems that playing from the back tees may be a little bit too much
of a challenge for some players (including myself) so we will revert back to
white tees on Fridays from now on.
For everyone’s information, at the start of next month
Phoenix golf club re-introduces Sports Day rates for Monday’s, Tuesday’s and
Wednesday’s for walk-in guests. The green fee will be 900 baht across the
board for these days. Other days will be their normal charges. However if
you wish to play on a Friday with our group you can enjoy a green fee of
only 1,000 baht as a guest of the members.
On a side note last week a small group went out on the
ocean and experienced another great day fishing. The catch of the day was an
approx 18 to 20kg jack fish. This was rewarded with a voucher for KPK Foods
once again.
For information regarding Tuesday or Friday golf at Phoenix and KPK Club
sea fishing, please give me (Mike) a call on 087 091 7565.

Double delight for Ted Senior
Golf from the Travellers Rest
Barry Hooper
I have often made reference to Ted Senior being “Mr. Two”
because of the amount of 2’s that he wins. This past week he definitely was
a “Mr. Two”, but for a completely different reason. This time it was for
acquiring two A Flight wins on consecutive outings. Congratulations Ted –
good shooting!
Saturday, March 5,
Greenwood - Stableford
Saturday we went to Greenwood to play the A & B course
and thirty seven golfers made the journey to compete in three divisions.

The
week’s double winner - Ted Senior.
The course as always these days was in very good fettle
and surprise, surprise there were no count-backs on the day.
The Div 1 winner was our regular lady player Tewin
Lamthong with a 38-pointer and the closest anyone could get to her was Mab
Jiwa (a new name to me) at 36 and then Tewin’s partner in life Fergus in
third spot with 35.
The second division honours went to Robin Peach with 37
points while two back and second was Peter Webley, with another of our
regular ladies Mod Chaviraksa third on 34.
Division 3 saw Adam Oyston with a great 41 points heading
the list, Alan Evans was the closest for second back at 39 and Jim Cleaver
took third on 38.
Div. 1
1st Tewin Lamthong (12) 38pts
2nd Mab Jiwa (13) 36pts
3rd Fergus Brennan (9) 35pts
Div. 2
1st Robin Peach (14) 37pts
2nd Peter Webley (14) 35pts
3rd Mod Chaviraksa (14) 34pts
Div. 3
1st Adam Oyston (27) 41pts
2nd Alan Evans (27) 39pts
3rd Jim Cleaver (20) 38pts
Monday, March 7, Khao Kheow - Stableford
The group visited Khao Kheow on Monday to face the
challenge of the A & B courses and thirty one players took part so two
divisions.
The top flight had Ted Senior (our man of the week – see
headline) top of the list with 38 points while second to him was Bill
McGarvie on the same score but losing out on the count-back. Phil Battah was
third with 37, then came Tewin Lamthong and Jeff North who picked up the
minor places.
Division 2 was a win for Thomas Knudsen with a full
40-pointer. Jimmy Merritt found himself two back of that for second at 38
while the minor placings went to Peter Webley Jim Cleaver and Ian Hunt in
that order .
Div. 1
1st Ted Senior (12) 38pts
2nd Bill McGarvie (10) 38pts
3rd Phil Battah (13) 37pts
4th Tewin Lamthong (11) 36pts
5th Jeff North (9) 36pts
Div. 2
Thoma Knudsen (28) 40pts
Jimmy Merritt (25) 38pts
Peter Webley (14) 35pts
Jim Cleaver (19) 35pts
Ian Hunt (15) 35pts
Tuesday, March 8, The Emerald – Stableford
There were just seventeen players (no idea why) on the
day so only a single division.
Well Ted Senior was obviously still on a high from the
previous day and was taking no prisoners as he came out gunning and took his
second win of the week with 36 points. No one could stay with him and the
nearest was Seamus Farrell at 34 for second.
Peter Webley showed up in the frame yet again for another
third spot with 34, this time after taking the count-back over Mod
Chaviraksa. Septa Maddik was fifth with 33 points.
1st Ted Senior (11) 36pts
2nd Seamus Farrell (36) 34pts
3rd Peter Webley (14) 34pts
4th Mod Chaviraksa (14) 34pts
5th Septa Maddick (15) 33pts
Thursday, March 10, Phoenix - Stableford
Phoenix was the venue on Thursday with the Lakes and
Ocean course providing the challenge for the thirty-two players.
Boy o boy the winning scores were big in the top division
and I bet Michael Whelan with his 40 points was left a little disappointed
to only take third place after both Peter Webley and Mike Rushant returned
home with 41’s, with Mike taking the top spot after count-back.
In Div 2 it was that lady again Mod Chaviraksa who led
the field with her 37 points after seeing off Jim Cleaver on count-back,
with Saengsuyi Mayer (Tik) left in their wake and taking third at 32.
Div. 1
1st Mike Rushant (13) 41pts
2nd Peter Webley (14) 41pts
3rd Michael Whelan (12) 40pts
4th Ted Senior (11) 38pts
Div. 2
1st Mod Chaviraksa (15) 37pts
2nd Jim Cleaver (19) 37pts
3rd Saengsuyi Mayer (14) 32pts
4th
Septa Maddick (15) 31pts
