United ready and prepared for 2011 kick-off

Home games switched to Chonburi for first half of season

The club board of directors and sponsors join hands as a show of unity for the upcoming Thai Premier League season.

Staff reporters

With the start of the 2011 Thai Premier League season looming large, Pattaya United held a press conference last Friday at the Central Beach shopping mall to introduce the team’s new players to the fans and outline the club’s plans and ambitions for the upcoming campaign.

With new main sponsor True Corp. on board, the club has allocated a budget of 50 million baht to be spent on strengthening the first team squad and also retaining the services of players who performed well last season.

The first new faces to be introduced to the fans are three Japanese players, two of whom already have experience of playing football in Thailand.

Defender Hiroyuki Yamamoto has been signed from fellow Thai Premier League outfit TTM Pichit for whom he made 19 appearances last season. The 31-year old stopper spent most of his earlier career playing in either his homeland or for S-League team Albirex Niigata in Singapore. He is expected to bring some much needed experience to the Pattaya back line.

Yamamoto’s compatriot Keisuke Ogawa played at Chiang Rai FC last season before being snatched up by United after his contract expired. Ogawa will add some pace on the flanks as an attacking full back and he has already begun to show his worth with a fine display in the 6-0 pre-season victory over Ubon recently.

The third Japanese import brought in during the close season is midfielder Kazuya Myodo, the 24 year old having been signed from Albirex Niigata on a free transfer.

To complete the list of new foreign faces for the new season, United have also strengthened their attacking options with the signing of Nigerian forward Ojimi Garbriel Obatola. Known simply as “O.J.” to his fans, the African striker was voted young player of the year in 2009 while playing for Gombok United in the Singapore S-League. He then went on to play for Portland Timbers in the United States, where he enjoyed mixed fortunes, before being enticed to join Pattaya for the 2011 Thai Premier League season.

Players from the Pattaya United squad pose for a photo at a press conference held at Central Beach shopping mall on Friday, Feb. 4.

On the domestic front four new Thai players have joined the squad; Chompu Sengpo and Pairoj Anantanarong come in from Sisaket FC and PTT Rayong FC respectively, while goalkeeper Wichan Preedaboon and midfielder Anuwat Inyin have both been recruited from newly promoted Air Force United FC.

Pattaya’s new Head Coach, Jatuporn Pramuanban, said that most of the first team squad had been in full training since December and the players are as ready as they can be for the new challenge. Jatuporn said the club had high hopes this year of bettering last year’s sixth placed finish and would be looking to put in a sustained tilt at the league title.

In his address to the supporters gathered at Central Beach, Pattaya Mayor Ittiphol Khumplome, in his role as Pattaya United club Chairman of Advisor, said that despite great efforts, the remedial work on the Nongprue Stadium to bring it up to Thai Premier League standards was still some way off completion. As a result, the club has been forced to seek out temporary new accommodation and will consequently play all its ‘home’ games for the first half of the season at the Stadium of the Institute of Physical Education in Chonburi, opposite the Sripatum University on Sukhumvit Road.

The Mayor apologized for the inconvenience this will cause supporters but the club have said that they will do all they can to lay on sufficient transportation for fans looking to go to the home matches, and supporters wishing to attend the game against Bangkok Glass this coming Saturday should contact the club office on Pattaya 3rd Road by calling 038 414 453 or 038 425 077 for all the latest transport and travel information.

It is hoped that the renovations to the Nongprue Stadium will be completed in time for the second half of the season.

Thai windsurfers won three of seven categories and medaled in all but one at the Singapore Open Asian Windsurfing Championship held last month.

Siriporn Kaeduang-ngam took first in the Female RSX race group, Nawin Singsart in the the Mistral One Design Overall category and Krongkaew Sakulfang finished first in the girls Techno 293 bracket.

The Jan. 12-16 races saw windsurfers from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and Thailand vie for medals in seven classifications. Each country sent athletes from their Olympic teams, Youth Olympic teams, national teams, and other top windsurfers.

The wind proved a challenge for the Thai windsurfers who are more used to strong breezes. The average wind speed was only 3-5 knots for the competition and the Hong Kong racers used to slack wind best to take an early lead. But strong winds of up to 23 knots on the final day saw Thai riders sail into the lead in many categories.

Last gasp goal salvages a point for City

MBMG International League Div. 1

Paul Frain

Pattaya City faced French side Les Gaulois at the Horseshoe Point last weekend in what was only their third home game of the season, and suffering from a series of injuries to key players, City were forced to field an under strength side for this fixture.

The French are never to be underestimated and showed their credentials when they took an early lead in the match; left back Fungkasorn failed to clear a harmless pass which allowed the French forward to run onto the ball and gave the City keeper no chance with his shot.

With City behind so early they did not settle and they struggled to come to terms with the French defence playing the offside trap. The long balls by City were easily dealt with by the towering centre backs of Les Gaulois.

City gradually came back into the match and centre forward Ndjanna put in a great run on the right but his centre was behind the unmarked Knorr and the chance was gone. Just before half time the home side came close to equalizing but Voundi’s shot just scraped the bar and went over.

The Pattaya players knew they had to do something special in the second period to get a result and they began to use the wings more and more, which put the French on the back foot but for once City’s final ball was unusually lacking.

Les Gaulois were still posing a threat at the other end of the field and City keeper Ananthakul had to pull off a fine diving save to stop City from falling further behind.

Pattaya’s Dipita saw his shot hit the side netting after a good passing move and this sparked a spell of pressure from the home side but time but time again they were unable to work the French keeper.

After Les Gaulois had hit the Pattaya woodwork in a break away, the referee became the center of attention when he waved away City’s appeals for a penalty after Knorr appeared to be bustled over in the French area.

With the clock ticking down Pattaya threw everything at the Les Gaulois defence and gained their reward when Tshuma’s free-kick was turned into the Les Gaulois net by the outstretched boot of City’s debut player Voundi, just as the referee was preparing to blow the final whistle, to tie the game up at 1-1.

This game proves that there are no easy matches in this league and City must get their act together if they want to retain the league title, as they are dropping too many points against the lower teams at present.

The City Reserves meanwhile are currently enjoying a 2 week hiatus from league action.

PTT Pattaya Open 2011 gets underway at Dusit Thani Pattaya

Finals to be played this weekend

The star players of the 2011 PTT Pattaya Open are seen on stage with the tournament sponsors after the conclusion of Sunday’s press conference held at the Dusit Thani Pattaya.

This year’s PTT Pattaya Open officially began following a press conference held last Sunday, 6 February 2011 at the Napalai Convention Hall of Dusit Thani Pattaya. The event was attended by all the sponsors and the participating tennis stars such as the tournament’s number one seed Vera Zvonareva of Russia, number 2 seed Ana Ivanovic of Serbia and number 3 seed Maria Kirilenko, also from Russia.

Zvonareva is looking to achieve a hat trick and sources say that she will face stiff competition from past French Open winner Ana Ivanovic who has recently seen a return to form and climbed up from rank no. 65 to the top 20. Demonstrating the increasing status of this tournament on the WTA tour, this year’s field also includes top players such as Maria Kirilenko, Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova and China’s Jie Zheng. This year’s total prize money amounts to US$220,000.

Part of the highlights during the press conference was the drawing of the singles event and the handing of the symbolic key to Pattaya City to the defending champion, Vera Zvonareva. In her speech, she thanked all the sponsors and added that Pattaya was the best destination and she had been coming to this resort city for many years now.

The weeklong event from 6-13 February has been voted as Tournament of the Year for 2010 by the WTA tour players who cited reasons such as the unique experience they had in the resort city of Pattaya and the relaxed atmosphere as well as the warm hospitality from Dusit Thani Pattaya, the tournament’s host hotel for 20 years now.

This year, the event program has given the players another unique opportunity to explore the destination’s attractions with a boat trip to the nearby Coral Island also known as Koh Larn and other places. Aside from the boat adventure, the participating players from across the globe have participated in the coral planting at the resort’s beachfront and spent time with kids whose sports interests include tennis.

In the first round matches earlier on Monday, Maria Kirilenko beat Alberta Brianti of Italy in three sets, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 in a match that lasted 2 hours, 15 minutes.

Veteran American Jill Craybas also progressed with victory over former top-ranked junior Noppawan Lertcheewakarn. The 36-year-old Craybas, ranked 97th, won 6-3, 6-3 after a string of unforced errors from Lertcheewakarn.

Lertcheewakarn, 19, the 2009 junior Wimbledon champion, said she was “tired and not ready to play” after representing Thailand in the Fed Cup.

Come tournament finals on Sunday 13 February, the stadium of Dusit Thani Pattaya will once again be filled with tennis fans that will be supporting their favourite players. The PTT Pattaya Open has continued to hold its reputation of bringing in international athletes to the resort city thereby giving it the recognition as a great destination for world sport tournaments.

Note: Advance and same day ticket purchases can be made at the venue daily from 10.00 a.m.. The ticket booth is located adjacent to the main grandstand.

China’s Jie Zheng returns the ball during her opening match.

No. 2 seed Ana Ivanovic got off to a good start in her opening match against Thailand’s Nudnida Luangnam.

Tanaporn Thongsing of Thailand serves during her qualifying match against Turkey’s Cagla Buyukakcay on Sunday.

Chonburi tops the table at National Disabled Games

Wichit Chatpaisit, the Governor of Chonburi, summarizes the sports competition results during the closing ceremony.

Phasakorn Channgam

Chonburi’s disabled athletes did the region proud by finishing top of the medals table at the recently completed 29th National Games for People with Disabilities.

Mirroring the National Games, held at the back end of last year, Chonburi was also the host for the disabled games held from January 23-27, and the home athletes achieved unparalleled success, winning 106 gold medals, 78 silver and 80 bronze medals for a total of 264 in all.

Coming in second place was the Bangkok Sports Association, receiving 90 gold medals, 53 silver and 38 bronze medals (a total of 181), and in third was the Nonthaburi Sports Association team who garnered 64 gold medals, 57 silver and 42 bronze, for a total of 163 medals.

These three teams were trailed in next by the Pathumthani Sports Association (63 medals) and the Lopburi Sports Association (56 medals) respectively.

The athletes took part in some 17 different sporting disciplines and teams from 67 Provincial Sports Associations from all over the country took part.

The final closing ceremony was held on January 27 at the National Eastern Region Indoor Stadium in Pattaya and was attended by Dhiravat Sirivansant (Assistant Minister of Tourism and Sports) who oversaw the handing over of the Games flag to representatives from Khon Kaen for the 30th edition to be held next year.

Kanokpan Julkasem (Director of the Sports Authority of Thailand) offered congratulations to all the competing athletes and praised the Chonburi inhabitants and organizers for doing such a sterling job in hosting a very successful event.

As well as song and dance routines and a parade of athletes representing all the competing regions, one particular highlight of the closing ceremony was a live song without music, “Hua Jai Puk Kan”, led by Jenjira Suksud (with a fabulous singing voice) from the Karunyawet Welfare House for People with Disabilities. The flame was slowly extinguished as the song ended in a fitting way to end a tremendously successful event for the Chonburi region.

The Khon Kaen Province representatives join the closing parade as the host of the 30th Games for people with disabilities, to be held next year.

A clean sweep for the PGS

The IPGC Monthly Members’ Tournament

Winners at Treasure Hill: Alan Griffiths (2nd Div), Howard Jeglum (3rd Div) & Masanori Takano (1st Div).

Wednesday, Feb. 2, Treasure Hill – Stroke & Stableford

The first Wednesday in February saw a large field of IPGC members gather at Treasure Hill for the second IPGC Members’ Tournament of the year. The course is probably the most well presented in the province at the moment and the addition of many new palm trees and ornamental bushes will make the course easier on the eyes, though even tougher in the mind.

With caddies a-plenty and the white tees being used by the top flight and yellows for the rest, the prospect of some challenging golf lay in store as the eighty golfers started on time on an otherwise empty course.

Each monthly member’s tournament provides three winners in the divisions and one from the ladies, who will go forward to the finals to compete for the Gold and Silver Medals later in the season. In addition the tournaments will also be used to determine the IPGC Gentleman Player of the Year, with between 1 and 15 points to be won in each division every month, dependant on final positions, which will then be aggregated for the year to establish the overall winner.

As usual the first division contests a stroke play format whilst the second, third and Ladies’ division play Stableford.

In the first division the contest threw up a rare result as regulars from one member group, the PGS in Soi Buakhao, filled all three top places. Rick Schramm took third place with a fine net 75, a few shots behind Ray Banks in second on net 72 and Masanori Takano drew deeply on his course management skills to post an excellent net 71 for the win.

The second division also saw a close contest and the intervention of the recorder’s ubiquitous abacus separated the two golfers on 37 points contesting second place, with Ted Lodge emerging as runner-up, his back nine total of 20 points taking advantage of Vic Hansen’s lapses in a back nine of 17 points. Winning the flight was Alan Griffiths whose 39 points emerged as the best points score of the day.

The third division was again closely fought at the top with Paul Chabot in third place with 33 points, John Williams in second with 36 points and Howard Jeglum winning the flight with 37 points.

The Ladies’ winner was Tuijal Taari on 21 points taking a count-back advantage over Orawan Meeraka with a back nine score of 13 points to Khun Orawan’s 10.

In the ‘2’s competitions there were thirteen birdies, including a brace for Alan Hanlon, an amazing effort on the quick and tricky greens and the winners and the successful near pin golfers are listed below.

After the tournament there was an excellent presentation buffet at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar in Soi Buakhao. The function and prizes were sponsored as always by the IPGC, and the PGS coordinator, Mr Len warmly thanked all those who had worked hard once again to ensure the success of the competition, especially registrar Glyn Evans, results coordinator Stephen Beard and the hard working event organiser Russell Exley, for whom the day had been a resounding success.

Division 1
1st Masanori Takano net 71
2nd Ray Banks net 72
3rd Rick Schramm net 75

No ‘monkey business’ at Bangpra

PSC golf from The Fairway Golf Society

Monday, Jan. 31, Bangpra - Stableford

We arrived at Bangpra early today, as requested by the management as they had so many bookings. They started us of on the 10th tee at our original tee off time.

Wednesday’s winners: Gary Jackson and Keith Allen.

Much to our pleasant surprise there was no monkey business after nine holes and no hold ups. When we arrived at the 1st tee we had a clear course in front of us. We also noticed that there were no monkeys to be seen anywhere. So I asked my caddie where they had gone and she informed me that it was a monkey Buddha holiday, whatever that means?

Anyway on to the golf and 32 players today so we had 2 divisions. Alan Griffiths won the A Flight with 37 points and Tony Duthie, still on a roll, won the B Flight.

The 4 near the pin winners were Miss Mam, Keith Allen, Lee Butler and Barry Wellings.

A Flight
1st Alan Griffiths (12) 37pts
2nd Miss Mam (15) 32pts
3rd Andy Odell (10) 31pts
B Flight
1st Tony Duthie (21) 37pts
2nd Jan Van Spellen (19) 36pts
3rd Roy Dayton (22) 36pts
Wednesday, Feb. 2, Crystal Bay - Stableford

Another good turn-out of 30 players today so split into two divisions once again.

The scoring in both divisions was of a very high standard with a lot of golfers playing to their handicaps and 6 players below par. So maybe the course was playing a little easier than normal?

The star of the day was Keith Allen, who was cut last week from 16 to 14.5, but that did not seem to trouble him as he shot the round of his life to return 43 points.

Near pins went to Pier Cere, Andre Vandyk, Keith Allen and Brian Lewis.

A Flight
1st Keith Allen (15) 43pts
2nd Brian Lewis (18) 39pts
3rd Andre Vandyk (16) 37pts
B Flight
1st Gary Jackson (28) 39pts
2nd Roy Dayton (22) 39pts
3rd Dick Hobson (24) 36pts
Friday, Feb. 4, Treasure Hills - Stableford

This must be one of the best ‘value for money’ courses to play at the moment as it is in excellent condition. But yet again the course won on the day with only one player breaking par and only a handful of players scoring 30 plus points.

Two divisions today with the cut off at 17 and Richie Neville won the A Flight with 37 points while the still improving Patrick Engels took the B Flight.

Near pins winners were Richie Neville, Tony Duthie, Jorma and Ning Neal.

A Flight
1st Richie Neville (11) 37pts
2nd Scott Dobbin (0) 33pts
3rd Pier Cere (11) 29pts
B Flight
1st Patrick Engells (21) 35pts
2nd Harvey Samuels (18) 33pts
3rd Erich Sielek (20) 31pts

Note: The Fairways Golf Society plays every Sun, Mon, Wed & Fri. Anyone wishing to play with our group can call in to the clubhouse and put their name on the lists provided or call Scott on 084 389 2379.

Tough going at Treasure Hill

PSC golf from the The Caddy Shack

Monday, Jan. 31, Treasure Hill – Stableford

A slightly smaller than normal contingent of 14 players made the long trip to Treasure Hill on Monday to take on this challenging course off the white tees.

The difficulty of this layout was reflected in the scores with Ted Gardner being the only one to break 30 points and Dave Bramley taking top spot in the second division with just 29.

A Flight
1st Ted Gardner (8) 33pts
2nd Phil Cawse (11) 29pts
B Flight
1st Dave Bramley (15) 29pts
2nd Bruce Tollitt (18) 28pts
2’s
: Ted Gardner H2, Bernard Channing H6.

Wednesday, Feb. 2, Rayong C.C. - Stableford

Twenty-two players out today in two flights at Rayong Country Club and the scores were much better than on Monday, with Paul Walia returning a best of the day 39 points to capture the A Flight. Trevor Priestley was the B Flight winner after edging a count-back over Ben Findon.

A Flight
1st Paul Walia (13) 39pts
2nd Brian Orr (14) 38pts
3rd Phonsie McGahan (6) 37pts
B Flight
1st Trevor Priestley (18) 36pts
2nd Ben Findon (18) 36pts
3rd Dave Strang (18) 34pts
2’s
: George Way H12, Dave Strang H16

Friday, Feb. 4,Green Valley - Stableford

A return to the society’s ‘home’ course of Green Valley on Friday with 23 golfers once more split into two flights.

‘Phonsie’ McGahan demonstrated the consistent form that he has been showing for some time now to take out the A Flight with 37 points. The same total was also enough for B Flight top honours, this time going to Ben Findon, who also scored one of the day’s only ‘2’s.

A Flight
1st Alphonsie McGahan (6) 37pts
2nd Rick Culley (12) 35pts
3rd Geoff Couch (11) 35pts
B Flight
1st Ben Findon (18) 37pts
2nd Mick O Meara (23) 35pts
3rd Dave Strang (18) 33pts
2’s: Ben Findon H16, Paul Walia H12.

Note: The Caddy Shack is situated on Soi 8 Threppasit, follow the soi to the well appointed Old English style Bar. We play golf on Mon/Wed/Fri, and can also arrange golf trips outside these days. For more information email [email protected].

Another cracking week at Phoenix

The Phoenix Tuesday/Friday (PSC) Group

Tuesday’s winners (standing rear) with the staff from The Relax Bar.

Mike Gerrard

Someone said to me last Tuesday, “How do you think of all the subject matter for the write ups?”

My reply was to say that it is not always easy to find something new to say. So this week I will disperse with all the usual rubbish and just get on with the results.

On Friday, Jan. 28, we had a full complement of players but only one was able to break their handicap. After a very dismal few months playing quite poor golf (including last Tuesday) Stuart Gordon came back to form to shoot 40 points from the blue tees! It was a good time for a sharp exit for a couple of weeks whilst he goes walkabout somewhere. It will be nice to see what his handicap is when he returns.

A not so close second spot went to Chris Coffey with 35 points and amazingly claiming third spot by default, due to others entering N/R’s, was myself with 30 points. Just goes to show - no matter how bad you think you are playing you may just be that bit better than the rest!

Onto last Tuesday, Feb. 1, and once again we had a full complement and a beautiful day. Mountain/Lake course was the challenge, and strangely the course was not very busy so a very comfortable speed of play was enjoyed by all.

In the A Flight the joint winners were newcomer Bill (The chatterbox) Hewitt, who scored 38 points, (and also assisted myself to not lose any money on the side bets), along with Mike Allidi who scored a superb gross 73 (38 points). Coming close to them was Hugh Byrne with 36 points to claim third place.

Scores in the B Flight were not quite so good and the winner with 34 points was Goort Gelten. In second place with 33 points was John Bartley, and in third place was Eamon Murtagh with 32 points.

Near pins went to Keith Etherington, Goort Gelten, Barry Wood and Patrick Browne while the Long Putt award on the 18th went to Eamon Murtagh.

Again, as every week, our hosts The Relax Bar donated lucky draw prizes of a free drink and a free massage to go with our own lucky draw prizes. The winners were myself, Joe Stranks and Bob Neylon.

This week we said a few farewells to some great guys who unfortunately have to go back to their respective homelands: Graham Ellis, Keith Etherington and John Maycock all going back to (not so sunny UK) to continue to bolster the pension funds for us old codgers who have to stay here and endure this horrible life! Hurry back boys.

To finish with I would just like to inform anyone interested in joining our little group that you are most welcome as long as you have a bona fide handicap (we allow maximum 28) and are prepared to join in with the general format of our game. Non Phoenix members are welcome and can enjoy a preferential green fee rate of 1,000 baht during the high season as a guest of the members. We play white tees on Tuesdays and blue tees on Fridays. Beginners and occasional players would not fit in.

Some members of our group are also enjoying some super fishing trips this year, with some good catches in and around the islands of Sattahip. Contact me, Mike Gerrard, on 087 091 7565 for more information.

Every dog has his day

PSC golf from Tropical Berts

Tuesday, Feb. 1, Greenwood – Stableford

So off we went to Greenwood, we always like this course and make sure we go there once a month. These days the trip up there is quite pleasant, the roads are now well connected and there are many ways there so that you can go a different way every time. In fact I think we all went one way and split on the return journey.

Greenwood is in good condition at the moment and the test for the day was to be the A & B nines. We started on the A nine and straight away knew the day was going to be really difficult as the wind was blasting at us. So we went off the ‘less brave’ tees, the yellow, and tried to make the day much more relaxed.

Onto the course we found it relatively quiet and were soon on our way. The strong wind caused problems all the way around and the first three holes were directly into it. The second hole, a par 3, was really difficult and most players took a wood (one tee back and I reckon even the best players would need a driver). Still we battled on and in some places the fairways were protected by the trees and it was quite pleasant. Speaking of the fairways, they were in good condition and the greens were fast and tricky. All in all a fine day out in the peace of the countryside.

The restaurant outside is a good place to sit and the food quite good and well priced. We were soon into cars and on our ways back to Bert’s .

Everyone has their 10 minutes of fame, so they say, and as the results came in it became obvious that we had one player who has played with us for some years and never yet won, in fact in all those years one second last month was the best result he has ever had, and 32 points the most points, had had a day to remember. Could he do it this time?

In the A Flight, 0 to 17, the winner with 39 points was Tony Scamber, with Rob Brown second on 36 points. In third we had a count-back with 4 players on 35 points, but Brian Parrish had the best back nine and was thus third.

Now the ‘Every dog has his day’ bit: with his best ever round with us, by many shots, after years of trying, the winner of the B Flight with 39 points was Keith Phillips. Mashi was so surprised he double checked the card for mistakes and finally had to agree he couldn’t find any. After a stunned silence, all were full of praise for Keith who has stuck at it for years and finally triumphed.

In second was Dick Warberg with 36 points ahead of a count-back of 5 players on 34 points that saw jack Robertson in third.

The presentation over, Keith went straight up and ‘Rang the Bell’ on the basis that he has never had the chance before and he probably will not again. Mind we are still awaiting the result of the blood test. Nice one Keith. T.T.F.N.

Habgood in hot form at Eastern Star

PSC golf from The Bunker Bar

January ‘golfer of the month’ Tom Jones (right) celebrates with JJ Harney.

Monday, Jan. 31, Khaow Kheow - Stableford

We arrived at Khaow Kheow to find that the first day of the Honda LPGA qualifying competition was being held there, but the ladies had already set off on a different nine. We had no problems or delays and the field of 30 golfers set off to play the C and A nines at our scheduled tee time. The pace of the round was slow, however, due to several slow groups ahead of us.

The condition of the course was good, although the greens on the inward nine had been prepared for the LPGA competition, and were considerably faster than those on the outward nine, a fact that tripped up several unwary golfers. No golfer bettered their handicap on the day and the best score was carded by Frank Waterhouse (Paco) with 35 points, beating John Hughes on a count-back to win the B Flight. Peter Kelly took the honours in the A Flight with 34 points.

Tom Jones had a steady round to hold off potential challengers and take the ‘Golfer of the Month’ title for the first time since playing at the Bunker.

A Flight
1st Peter Kelly (9) 34pts
2nd Tony Scambler (9) 32pts
3rd Bill Wilkinson (9) 32pts
B Flight

2nd John Hughes (16) 35pts
3rd Neil Griffin (28) 33pts

Wednesday, Feb. 2, Eastern Star - Stableford

A field of 28 golfers (nice to have no 3-balls for a change) set off from the Bunker Bar to play Eastern Star. The course was generally in good condition, although the inconsistent greens have always been a problem here. The round progressed smoothly and there were no holdups, which was a pleasant change from the last few weeks.

The star of the day was Peter Habgood, who kept his temper, and produced his best round for some considerable time, to win the B Flight on 40 points. Mashi Kaneta also made a welcome return to form to win the A Flight with 37 points.

A Flight
1st Mashi Kaneta (12) 37pts
2nd Patrick Kelly (3) 34pts
3rd Mark Stanley (11) 33pts
B Flight

Friday, Feb. 4, Greenwood - Stableford

On our previous few visits to Greenwood we’ve played the C nine, which certainly ranks as the toughest course here, but today several of the higher handicap golfers expressed their relief that we were allocated to play the B and A courses.

The starters here seem to have a habit of squeezing in extra groups, and although the course was relatively quiet, we arrived at the tenth tee to find 3 groups waiting to tee off. Other than that the day went smoothly, and the course was in its usual good condition.

Ken Young produced the best score of the day with 38 points to record his maiden win (after many games) at the Bunker.

1st Tony Robbins (13) 35pts
2nd Patrick Kelly (+2) 35pts

Berger king tops the week

IPGC golf from The Haven

Sunday, Jan. 30, Silky Oakes - Stableford
White tees CSS 70
Yellow tees CSS 73
White Flight
1st Roar Berger (26) 40pts
2nd Sean Hallahan (18) 37pts
3rd Frank McGowan (16) 36pts
Yellow Flight
1st Ted Lodge (11) 35pts
2nd Frank Harrington (6) 35pts
3rd Martin McAteer (14) 35pts

With enough players to field two divisions the opportunity was taken to play from two different tees to accommodate all levels of expertise and handicaps, also taking into account the individual aspirations of the contenders. The two different competitions returned scores that underlined the differences between the two, with three strokes variation in the CSS for the day.

Allan Hanlon.

The Yellow Flight saw Roar Berger stride in three points ahead of Sean Hallahan in second and a further one in front of Frank McGowan in third.

The Whites had Ted Lodge taking advantage of his local knowledge as he just led in a group of four at one over handicap by winning the resulting count-back with a very good one under handicap back nine.

Frank Harrington saw the winner’s podium, having struggled everywhere else during the rest of the week, with a solid 18 on the inward half with Martin McAteer two behind in the count-back in third.

Al Keith.

Just missing out after a stunning two under par gross going out, but slipping badly when the clubhouse was in view, was Russell Goldsworthy who finished on just 14 points through the last nine.

Kevin Hamilton, Frank Harrington and Russell Goldsworthy shared the ‘2’s off the yellows and John Connolly slipped in the only one off the whites.

Monday, Jan. 30, Greenwood - Stableford
CSS 73
1st Allan Hanlon (12) 36pts
2nd Rick Schramm (9) 35pts
3rd Shuichi Kodaka (18) 33pts
4th Benny Hansen (26) 33pts
5th Russell Exley (7) 33pts

Another chance to play what is currently one of the best conditioned courses in the area brought out a good number of players but none could master the very fast but very true greens and the windy conditions on the day.

Rod Howett.

Allan Hanlon did the best of the day with a solid level handicap round that proved to be sufficient to take the top step of the podium away from Rick Schramm by a single point.

Shuichi Kodaka quickly got back into his Pattaya golf mode with another round there or thereabouts that got better as it progressed, culminating in winning the three-way count-back for third with a better 19 as Benny Hansen in fourth, but winning his first prize out of The Haven, could scrape together just 14 and Russell Exley subsided to 13 points after going out in two under handicap and looking like the days winner at the turn.

There were no 2’s in either division which just went to underscore the difficulty of the course on the day.

Before making the presentations Stephen Beard welcomed new members Ian Dawson, Eric Goodman and Frank Harrington and also welcomed back Brian Talbot and Dave Lehane.

Friday, Feb. 4, The Emerald - Stableford
CSS 72
Div. 1 (0-17)
1st Al Keith (5) 37pts
2nd Dave Stockman (3) 37pts
3rd Doug Campbell (15) 36pts
4th Brian Libby (9) 36pts
Div. 2 (18+)
1st Rod Howett (25) 38pts
2nd Al Rolnik (23) 34pts
3rd Bill Hurd (19) 34pts
4th Leif Lossius (29) 34pts

With everyone having played in the previous Wednesday’s IPGC Monthly Medals, and nobody hardly troubling the scorers that day, all the players were extremely hopeful of some far better returns for the day at the usually player friendly Emerald. But for the fourth time in the week it proved to be all a bit of a struggle to get any sort of round going, either in the first or second division, with the greens having been recently sanded and the general conditions difficult to handle.

Rod Howett returned the best result of the day to take the second division’s top spot with a two under handicap round that was good enough by four to see off the chasing pack. This was led by Al Rolnik who won the count-back with a better 20 against Bill Hurd’s 18 in third and Leif Lossius’s 16 in fourth.

Leif was reckoned to be unlucky as he did not spot that his handicap had risen a shot and mistakenly played off his old lower handicap, thus losing a point which would have put him in second place.

The first division was closely contested with Al Keith just edging out Dave Stockman with a better count-back of 20 to 19 after Dave had gone round in a pair of gross 37s and Al had a 39/37 split. Good golf indeed.

Doug Campbell, making a welcome return to Soi 13 golf, took third place with a better count-back of 20 to 16 over Brian Libby who played from his new and lower handicap for the first time.

Once again there were no 2’s in either division.

Back at The Haven there were welcomes for new members Keith Melbourne, Ron Rigden, John Pearce, and welcome backs for Doug Campbell, Clive Tolley and Yasuo Suzuki.

Note. If you would like to play with The Haven group you can contact mobile 084782 4582 or call in to the hotel at 185 Soi 13 between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays and Sundays on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

An Earley leaderboard at Rayong

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

The Pattaya Golf Society visited Rayong C.C. on Monday, 31st January to play a stableford competition in two flights with the cut at sixteen and under.

The course, with its usual hard fairways and slow greens, did not offer any surprises except perhaps that it was empty and play got underway twenty minutes before the allotted time. Imagine that at Phoenix or Green Valley!

Scores were low as usual on the biting course and the first flight had Wichai Tananusorn in third place with 34 points, just one behind the joint leaders Vic Hansen and Mike Earley. For Mike it represented one of his better performances since joining the group a couple of years ago.

In the second flight Alan Duckett and Gordon Everingham shared runner-up place with 36 points each whilst Yvonne Earley emulated the performance of her top flight husband with the best points score of the day, 38 points, for an emphatic win.

Mike took the ‘2’s award for the sole birdie ‘2’ of the day, on the seventh hole and newly returned Erik Lont received the Booby Bevy for barely exceeding his handicap with the number of points he scored. It was a day when family fortunes were enjoyed at Rayong C.C.

Journeyman becomes master at Greenwood

Another large field of Pattaya Golf Society members took to Greenwood on Friday, 4th February to play a stableford competition on the A and B nines in glorious weather and on a course well prepared and full.

The two main flights were cut at fourteen and under and there was also a ladies flight for good measure. In the latter Noi Emmerson and Mam Morel shared the win with 35 points each and Mam also had the pleasure of recording the only birdie ‘2’ of the day, on B5.

In the gentlemen’s top flight Dave Moriarty and Ray Banks shared second place with 32 points each; Ray playing his final round this trip in the sure knowledge he had done enough to take the society’s “Player of the Month” award for January after a string of fine performances. The flight winner was Brian Talbot, back for another spell on the province’s golf courses, and his level par 36 points gave him some pleasure after a tough time at Treasure Hill two days previously.

The second flight saw the best scores of the day with Canadian Gordon Gilchrist making his debut in the placings with a well crafted 33 points for third. He was only one point behind Martin Hennessey, his Irish eyes smiling at making a rare podium appearance, but they were all a country mile behind Dave Wilkinson who took the win in style amassing 41 points for his best score in years. It all goes to show that nice guys can win and for every journeyman golfer there lies success just waiting to appear, usually without notice.

The day was competently stewarded by John Mason but the pressures of the responsibility eventually got to him and he received the Booby Bevy for his low score of the day. He was warmly thanked by Mr Len back at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar and the evening ended with the traditional cool beers after another splendid day at Greenwood.

Kub killers strike at Bangpkong

PSC golf from Café Kronborg

San Mig Stu & The Drut

Monday, Jan. 31, Bangpakong - Stableford

As there was limited information given, I’m not sure exactly how many starters we had today. It was either 32 or 36. Despite Bangpakong having lost our tee-off time schedule we managed to hit off a short time after 9.45 and the first group took 4 hours and 20 minutes off the yellow (forward) tees.

Monday’s flight winners: (from left to right) Dave ‘The Admiral’ Richardson, Richard Kubicki and Mick O’Connor.

Deefa the Dog had a field day in collecting payment from player’s errant shots as SMS witnessed a number of drives off the first tee which either did not pass the ladies tee or went into the drainage creek just in front of it. The only advantage in playing in the last group is that nobody except your fellow players sees a bad tee shot off the first.

As this reports heading advises, Richard and Carole Kubicki did themselves proud by both winning in their respective grades. Richard won A grade with a superb 40 points and Carole tied for outright first in C grade with 36 points but was relegated to second spot on a count-back from ‘the Admiral’, who is playing better now that he has relinquished the stress of organizing the Monday and Thursday Kronborg golf outings.

Other A grade winners belonged to three Aussies who have made remarkable recoveries from their Australia Day binge last Wednesday, which notably contributed to an Oz exodus on last Thursday winners list. Martin Todd (36) Mike Gosden (34) and Andre Van Dyke (33) took out the other spots respectively.

B grade was won by the new Kronborg presenter/day organizer, Mick O’Connor who had a solid 37 points. Elias Magnusson trailed behind with 33 points for second spot and Bjane Kjaer beat Mike Winfield on a count-back with 32 points for third.

As mentioned Dave Richardson won C grade with Carole Kubicki taking out second on a count-back. Third spot was Hugh O’Donnell one point behind on 35 and Martin Topham came fourth with 33 points.

Deefa the Dog moved through the throng at presentation time, collecting from generous winners and losers. I’m not sure what the tally is from the efforts of this mongrel however he has done a marvelous job in collecting baht since he wondered into the Drut’s camp. All will be revealed soon as to who the fortunate recipients are, of monies collected by Deefa and the Compass Cap.

Speaking of the Compass Cap, fellow Aussie Paul Avery managed to win the cap with today’s effort. Thanks for the donations Paul and others who gave generously today.

Thursday, Feb. 3, Khao Kheow - Stableford

A multitude of golfers congregated at headquarters for today’s activities and departed the Kronborg at 08.15 hours.

Playing the C and A nines from the white tees the first group teed off at 09.45 hours and completed the journey in four hours and thirty minutes. This included a ten minute delay whilst awaiting replacement transport when the Admiral’s cart pulled a hamstring near the C5 tee.

The weather was superb and the greens quicker than a producing catholic rabbit. The course was presented in its usual excellent condition and is one of the best value for money venues in Pattaya.

We welcomed Nigel Perry from England who was delighted that he didn’t require the mandatory CRC application to get mobile this morning.

In the A flight Rob Brown continued his consistent form to hand in a solid forty points and claim first place.

Second spot went to Martin Todd, the man with 20/20 vision, who handed in thirty eight points, whilst Peter Sindberg finished on thirty seven points to edge out the fast finishing Richard Kubicki on thirty six.

In the B flight the leader board, which was as crowded as the Cairo airport, saw Mike Winfield with forty points hold on to win in a three way count-back from Bjarne Kjaer and Daryl Evans. In fourth place was Per-Olav Baarli on thirty nine points.

The C flight was a battle only second to that at Trafalgar and like his English counterpart (Nelson), Dave ‘The Admiral’ Richardson was the winner with thirty seven points and finished in considerably better health.

A cast of thousands rose as one and tumultuously applauded Carole Kubicki’s second place thirty six points whilst Hugh O’Donnell with thirty five points held on for third and relegated the ubiquitous Graham Buckingham with thirty two points into fourth position.

A Flight 0–15
1st Rob Brown (7) 40pts
2nd Martin Todd (8) 38 points
3rd Peter Sindberg (13) 37pts
4th Richard Kubicki (12) 36pts

1st Dave Richardson (24) 37pts
2nd Carole Kubicki (23) 36pts
3rd Hugh O’Donnell (23) 35pts

Featuring in the long putts were Niels Hansen on C9 and Peter Kelly on A9. Near pins went to Leif Kirkegaard on C3, Martin Todd on C8, Graham Buckingham on A3 and Nigel Perry on A5.

Deefa the dog was on hand as per usual to accept donations from the errant amongst us and their donations which were gratefully accepted will go to the needy in Pattaya. A huge thanks goes to all those who contribute.

Murphy gets on a roll to blitz the field

PSC golf from The Three Sisters Bar

Monday, Jan. 24, Bangpra – Stableford

Wednesday winner Dale Murphy, left, with runner-up Paul Evans.

Dale Murphy had a hot hand at Pattaya Country Club last Wednesday, Feb. 2. He started off with a par and followed it up with two more. He also birdied the 7th and followed it up with another par on the 8th. Needless to say, Dale was the winner for the day. The only reason he got only 41 points was that he faltered on the back nine.

Coming in at a distant second was Paul Evans with 35 points. A couple of weeks ago 35 points was the winning score but today it wasn’t even close. With 35 points coming in second, you can imagine what the rest of us did.

A nice surprise was that Andy Bettany stopped by to say hello. Andy was the person that donated the trophy that we now use as our monthly winner’s trophy. Andy and a few of the golfers had a few drinks to celebrate old times and told some tall stories.

High scores abound at ‘gang of four’ birthday bash

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Two of Monday’s birthday boys,
Capt’ Bob & Neil, flank Friday’s Div. D winner, David Davies

Monday, Jan. 31, Burapha – Pairs Stableford

Many birthdays have been celebrated at the Outback over recent years but not normally on the same day! Capt’ Bob and three regular Outbackers; Lloyd Shuttleworth, Neil Lavery and ‘Gentleman’ George Bishop came together to have a joint golf competition and party. Within a day, they all share the same birthday, as do Onsi Lavery (Neil’s wife), Capt’ Bob’s regular caddy at Burapha, Goy, and later in the day we discovered Robert McVey as well.

It all started early in the morning when some 40 joined the ‘birthday boys’ for breakfast at the Outback before leaving for the 30 minute trip to the regular Monday venue - Burapha.

Playing from the ‘whites’ (well it is Bob’s birthday!) it was off to the two-tee start on A and B for the 68 players. We were away slightly ahead of time all being away by about 10.30 a.m. to enjoy a comfortable, just over four hour round, with no interruptions.

The format was a ‘two ball’ better ball together with near pins and other prizes on offer. The course as is usual was in good condition with speedy greens.

Back we came into the clubhouse where Capt’ Bob was sorting the cards to determine the winners, and proceeded with the lucky draw for ‘free’ green fee vouchers at Burapha. This happens every Monday to encourage the Outbackers back into the clubhouse for a drink or a meal.

On our return to the Outback the barbie was on, with the usual burgers, both Thai and farang style, sausages, corn and chicken all being made available to the returning golfers all courtesy of the ‘four’.

It was then time for the presentation – Nigel as usual called everyone to order and introduced the ‘four’ and handed over to Capt’ Bob to announce the winners. There were some absolutely amazing scores, with 24 of the 34 teams scoring 40 points or more and 10 of those with 45 points or more, so even with 45 you weren’t certain to finish on the eight place podium.

First place went to the unlikely pairing of Raji (6) and Barry Lewis (30), a team that was put together by Capt’ Bob, neither partner having ever played together before. The card was carefully scrutinized by both Bob and Jack and although the method of getting to the massive 51 points was slightly different, the total was verified as correct, what a fantastic score. Barry did admit afterwards, it was the best he’d ever played.

Two teams on 47 points, normally enough to win this type of tournament, took second and third place; namely Paul Greenaway & Bernie Stafford and Owen Lloyd & John O’Keefe.

Other prizes sponsored by the four included nearest the pins:- B3 Peter Kehrli, B8 Raji, A3 Rosco, A6 Raji; nearest second shot, B2 Geoff Moodie, B6 (par 5) Capt’ Bob; nearest third shot A7 (par 5) Owen Walkley and finally best score on the four par 5’s went to Owen Walkley & Andy Makara with 13 points.

Barry Chadbourn sponsored the shortest drive on A1 (must use a wood and go past the ladies tee) and that went to Joe Mooney, who was about a yard shorter than Roy Studd’s.

Nigel wrapped up the formal part of the proceedings by having all sing ‘Happy Birthday’.

Also courtesy of Bob, Lloyd, Neil and George more food was brought out, including fisherman’s pie and massaman beef and there would be a ‘free’ bar for a while.

Joining in this unique day was the hard working PSC Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham, who has a hidden talent – he had made an amazing cake that he presented tonight! Where does he find the time? The celebrations went on well into the night – another great day out. Thanks you guys!

There were twelve ‘2’s from Peter Kehrli, Paul Greenaway, Bob Philp, Lloyd Shuttleworth, Steve Mann, Mark McDonald, Pat Regan, Joe Mooneyham, Rosco, Barry Lewis, Raji and Tony Garnett.

1st Amarjit Banwaitt & Barry Lewis, 51pts

4th Chris Thompson & Mark Thomas, 46pts
5th Graham Johnson & Garry George, 46pts

7th John Cogan & Neil Lavery, 45pts
8th David Davies & Barry McIntosh, 45pts
Tuesday, Feb. 1, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford

Just a little later start today as PCC arranged for an extra three tee times to accommodate the 35 Outbackers who decided to play this improving local course. We welcomed a number of new faces both joining us at the Outback and also at PCC.

With this number, the checking in was still efficient with Jenny and her staff still finding time to have a chat to anyone waiting. The refurbishment work is continuing in the locker room which will enhance the clubhouse facilities when finished and maybe they will then take down the ‘temporary clubhouse’ sign.

It was a bit slow with so many on the course but the weather was beautiful with a light breeze, the course was in fine fettle but the greens just a little slow.

It was one to four in two divisions today and a ‘jackpot 2’!

In the top flight it was count-back time with Alan Whittingham and Paul Smets both returning 36 points. Alan took the win by 1 point on the back 9. Another count-back was necessary to determine the final two places as both Murray Hart and Chris Fletcher achieved 34 points but Murray just edged into third spot by a point.

The best score of the day came in the second division from Irish newcomer John White with 41 points, with regular Tuesday man, Geoff Moodie, in second place with 36.

Another newcomer was Mam Persson (no relation to Dennis) who was in third spot with 35 points. There was a big simile from Mam as she handed over her place money to husband Ke. The final place went to another Tuesday regular Dave Spendley with 34.

There was a ‘jackpot 2’ for yet another new Outbacker, Mike Tukk.

Thirty eight Outbackers at Greenwood today, due to play the B and A nines; the only problem was, when we came round to the tenth hole (A), there were loads of groups waiting to tee off (5 balls at that). What is it with these courses? This sort of thing is happening everywhere at the moment. Our front groups needless to say were not happy but for once the starter came to our rescue; he took the decision to open the other nine (C) and sent us all over there. Well done mate – you saved the day.

Some good scores in Div A with a pair of 40’s being the best, newcomer Dave Ferguson edging out the frequent visitor to the podium, Owen Walkley. Bernie Stafford also did well for his 38, ahead of Jum (35) and Raji (33).

In Div B the scoring was not quite so good but nevertheless they did well as another newcomer to the Outback, Mark Dryden, led the way with his 37 points ahead of John Lawton and David Davies (still going well) both with 36.

Our thanks today go to Suzi Lawton who ran the day on behalf of the Outback, glad to hear you kept all the men in order.

There were four ‘2’s from John Lawton, Jack Piercefield, John White & Owen Walkley.

Friday, Feb. 4, Khao Kheow - Stableford

You might not know it but Khao Kheow was the venue for the qualifying for the LPGA tournament coming up at the Siam Old Course on 17th February and it was a privilege to play on part of the course after the ladies. We started on the C side, where the greens were somewhat slower than on the A loop, which was one of the nines the girls played; the greens were quick and everything about this nine was superb to say the least.

Even though most of the tees were forward it was a great day out and apart from one player, Barry the bookie with a quite outstanding score of 42 points, nobody gave the course a seeing to. Other winners included newcomer Russell Goldsworthy (Div A) with 35 points (73 gross), although he only just got the better of Graham Johnson on the same score, Chris Davisson, who took Div B with 36, and surprisingly David Davies, who won Div D with the modest score of just 32.

It is great to see Pat Regan’s Irish mates back playing here and they were made very welcome by all. 55 golfers played with an somewhat earlier start of 9.46 to accommodate the extras and thank you very much Khao Kheow, it is refreshing to be looked after.

There were six ‘2’s from Barry Wood, Kev Waycock, Vin Connellan, Barry Tregurtha, Jack Piercefield and Kev Watson, who had a very special one, an eagle 2 on A1.

Jomtien golfers hold the edge over Ban Chang rivals

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

The match-play teams line up at Eastern Star.

Monday, Jan. 31, Plutaluang – Stableford.

There were mixed reviews as we arrived today as to the condition and the selection of the two courses the starters had selected for our 41 players. The West and North, probably the best test of golf here, were allocated to us and we tee’d off 15 minutes ahead of schedule.

Considering it looked the busiest environment we have ever seen here, we were happy to find there were no problems whatsoever after the transfer from the front nine to the West course for everybody.

Thirty-six points was the best score in all 4 divisions with Marty Aronson winning division 3. William Chang was in second two points behind and Daniel Hayem took third on 32.

The Irish boy, Cully Monks, now playing off 18 and still wearing a mask and has no idea where a bell is in Siam Cats, won division 2 with 35 points. Kari Aarnio, with his last game with us before his return to Finland for personal reasons (we are all thinking of you Kari), was second with 32 and Bryan Rought came in third with 31 points.

Mike Combs, playing off 13 and before his return trip to Hawaii, won division 1 with 34 points, while playing off 8 Pete Sumner came in second with 32 and Peter Pedder was third with 31.

Herma Fitzgerald took out the ladies division with 26 points with Claude Hayem second one point behind.

Near pins were won by Herma Fitzgerald (2), Mike Conbs, Andy O’Neill, Tony Thorne (2), Jeff Hamilton and Burnie Sinclair.

In the ‘2’s today Tony Thorne birdied the eighth on the West course and Jef Hamilton the lighthouse hole to win the first and second division prizes.

Friday, Feb, 4, Eastern Star – Match-Play & Stableford

There is now an annual match-play competition between Siam Cats and the Backyard Golf Society, formerly known as the Ban Chang Boys based at Mama’s Bar in Ban Chang. There were twelve in each team with one round here and the other leg at Emerald the following Friday.

The two captains drive off first, Chris Voller for Siam Cats and Dave Richards for the BY boys and this will be an interesting competition over the next week.

The best results of the day came in with Chris beating Dave 5/3, Harry Vincenzi winning 5/4, Dangle for the BY boys triumphing 3/2 and Mike Chatt was five up after eight holes but only won at the end 2/1.

In a very competitive and much enjoyed competition Siam Cats go to Emerald this Friday with a 7.5 points to 4.5 points lead over the BY boys. There were smiles all round at Cats later.

There were still 42 out in our normal Friday stableford competition with three divisions for the men plus the ladies of course. The cut today was 5-15, 16-19 and 20 + and the best score of the day was in division 1 with Timo Ahvenainen coming in with 38 points. Alan Griffths beat his arch rival Alan Pilkington for second place on a 20/17 back nine count-back after they both came in with 36 points.

Jerry McCarthy’s 37 won division 2, beating Jan Sordal (alias Sassa) by 4 points and Tom Breslin was third after beating Dennis Scougal 17/15 on a count-back after they both shot 29 points.

Lee Casey took podium position in division 3 with 36 points, with David Phillips second on 33 and Tony Holehouse third on 32 points.

Toi Blair won the ladies division with 33 points, with Herma Fitgerald second one point behind. Herma also birdied the 17th for the only ‘2’ in her division but there were an amazing six in division 1 for Ian Bakewell, Jean Bruneau, Alan Griffiths, Arthur Hancock, Ya Riley and Dave Wheeler. Jerry McCarthy was smiling with the only birdie in division 2.

Near pins went to Toi Blair, Herma Fitzgerald (2), Ian Bakewell, Andy Galvin, Alan Griffiths, Harry Riley, Jerry McCarthy, Eugine Maguire and Errki Pohja.

It was Bon Voyage today to Andy O’Neill who has been with us for nine weeks, see you soon!

Monday, Jan. 31, Green Valley - Stableford

We visited Green Valley on Monday and thirty-five came out to play so two full divisions. The course was in good condition, as always of late, and allowed for good golf to prevail, however despite this the scoring was kept down.

Thirty seven was the highest total and that took both divisions; Bill Shepley in the first and Rob Herald in the second. A pair of thirty-fives went to count-back to decide second and third in Div1 and the honours went to Ito Akitoshi over John Franklin. Second in Div 2 was Andrew Rich with thirty five and third Arnold Jones with thirty-four.

The payouts went down to fourth and they fell to Tewin Lamthong and in the first division and Alun Webber in the second after losing the count-back.

Thomas Knusden Mick Quinn Mike Rushant and Roger Wilkinson shared the ‘2’s pot.

Tuesday, Feb. 1, Mountain Shadow - Stableford

Mountain Shadow was the venue on Tuesday and only twenty two played this time, but it was still enough for two divisions.

One of the three forty pointers this week secured first spot in Div 1 for Mick Quinn. You had to go back six points to find Kevin Waycott in second, and Brendan Moore rounded out the flight in third.

Low scores took Div 2 as Simon Tapster won with thirty-three points and there was a count-back fight out for the second spot between Garry Hookey and Mod Chaviraksa, with Garry just edging it.

Six ‘2’s were recorded today by Andy Redmond, Lewis Thom, Mick Quinn (x2), Darly Ottaway and Larry Simpson.

Thursday, Feb. 3, Phoenix - Stableford

On Thursday we had another great turnout with forty-one for our visit to Phoenix to play Mountain & Ocean, so three divisions was the order of the day.

Thirty eight points was enough to win the premier division for Ito Akitoshi, one less for Bo Banjaminson in the second tier, and a great forty points (the second of the week) gave the third division win to Greg Hill.

A plethora of ‘2’s came from Andy Redmond, Darly Ottaway, Kim Stokes, Alan McGarvie (x2), Rob Herald and Gary Hookey.

A near pin prize at the seventeenth (a bottle of Shiraz wine) was donated by Lewis Thom and the lucky recipient was Kim Stokes.

Bill Shepley was obviously very happy with his day and promptly rang the bell for the very large group that had returned for the presentation. A very nice gesture Bill.

Saturday, Feb. 5, Greenwood - Stableford

Saturday was another weekend visit to Greenwood to play on this great course which is being kept in very fine fettle. Tee-off was not until 11.30, but play always seems to be at a good pace on this course so no very long rounds ensued. We had forty-four players in attendance this week, for what I believe is a record turn-out at the TRGG. As usual with those sorts of numbers we had three divisions on the day.

Div 3 was a win for Jack McNamara with his thirty-eight points, followed in by Greg Hill and Rob Herald.

Matt MacKay took out the second flight, again with thirty-eight, and in second was Bo Benjaminson four behind and unable to repeat his Thursday performance. In third was Ted Senior, also with thirty-four, but losing out on this occasion on the count-back.

The top division saw our third score of forty for the week, this time from Vic Hansen, and we had to go three back for second and Larry Simpson, and a three further back to Bill Shepley in third (he always seems to be thereabouts in the running of late so a name to watch out for).

Bill also recorded one of a pair of ‘2’s today, the other coming from Simon Tapster.

1st Vic Hansen (11) 40pts
2nd Larry Simpson (10) 37pts

Driscoll celebrates with an ‘Ace’

PSC golf from Lewiinski’s

The Birthday Boys: Don Lehmer, left, and George Jackson.

Sunday, Jan. 30, Green Valley – 2-Person Scramble

George ‘one ball’ Jackson’ and Don ‘the ladies man’ Lehmer wanted to combine their birthdays with a golf tournament. There is nothing unusual about that in Pattaya. Papa Ray Rogers used to do it every year in May. Bjarne Nielsen does it every year. But George and Don were looking for a one shot deal as the UK Government is now sending George a regular payment every month and he wanted to celebrate it in style.

On Sunday, January 30 the Lewiinski’s gang held George and Don’s birthday bash at the Green Valley Golf Club. The tee times allocated were soon full as George and Don’s friends and acquaintances teed it up in a 2-person scramble.

The format was 40 % of the higher handicapper and 60% of the lower with each player requiring 6 drives. The standard of play was exceptionally high as one would expect with the course in excellent condition.

The message was clear - if you are to become 65 or over, Pattaya is the place to do it! Golf is the way to do it! And your friends, the Pattaya Sports Club golfers, are the people to do it with! And Lewiinski’s is the place to cut the cake, or in this case down a few sherbets. George and Don had one hell of a party.

The winners of the George and Don Scramble were Barry ‘the Boot’ Copestake and Dave Driscoll, with Dave gaining his first ever hole in one. What a Cinderella finish to a magical day. Together they posted a unbelievable net 51.8. There would be no way to top this.

In second place was Brent Philip and Chris Leck, they came in with a net 55. That was just two tenths of a stroke over the third place pairing of Claude Harder and Alain Belles who finished the day on 55.2. Fourth spot went to Keith McLachlan and Greg Bates with 56.6 who gained a count-back decision over Steve Ell1son and John McHugh. Barry and his son Alex concluded the prizes, with a score of 56.8.

With any birthday party there are the birthday presents. Only in this case the guests were receiving instead of giving as there were numerous technical prizes and the lucky raffle in aid of the Baan Jing Jai Kids Home (that raised 20,000 baht) and almost everyone at the party received a prize.

Sandwiched in between the team awards and the lucky draw was a moving tribute to George and Don that had evoked tears from the two old codgers, friends who were laughing so hard they had to prop each other up.

Technical prizes winners were Vic Hester, Pierre Bietry (2), Dave Driscol, Ian Rippey, Brent Philip, Peter Hynard, John O’Neil, Simon Philbrook (2), Mark Wood and Mark Bonner Golf.

Dave Driscoll rings the bell to celebrate his ‘Ace’ at Green Valley.

The prize for the ‘Best Turned Out’ pair went to Dale Shier and Mick Beresford.

It is often said by the expat community in Pattaya that it is impossible to do justice to an explanation of what life here is like. George and Don’s birthday party was a typical slice of Pattaya life. First there was an enormous fun day of golf at Green Valley. Then a buffet dinner at Lewiinski’s that is without doubt one of the best in town, and the evening was capped off with a cabaret across the road at the Sin Bin featuring Bobby ‘V’ Newell Reg ‘Kipper’ McKay and ‘Juke box’ Jackson.

That just leaves George and Don to thank Colin, Peter and Jim, the staff for all their hard work, Bob and Brad for a seamless event, every one for their kind donations, Green Valley, and a thank you to Big Frank, Seamus and Jez’s mom and dad. Hope to see you all next year!

Monday, Jan. 31, Treasure Hill - Stableford
A Flight
1st Pat Hanafin (12) 40pts
2nd Vic Hester (14) 38pts
3rd Tore Eliassen (13) 36pts
B Flight
1st Keith McLachlan (19) 36pts
2nd Sim Davis (28) 33pts
3rd Sean Soden (21) 33pts

A fair sized group (considering the back to back playing days) turned out to take on the formidable Treasure Hill.

Irishman Pat Hanafin had a sparkling round of 40 points for best of the day and top spot on the ladder in the senior flight. Vic ‘the inflictor’ Hester stood on the second rung two shots back, followed by Tore Eliassen who posted a solid even par round.

In the junior circuit Keith McLachlan held sway with an even par round, three clear of the ex Treasure Hill caddy Sim Davis as a count-back elevated her above Sean Soden on the podium.

Vic Hester, Tore Eliassen Steven Doric, Keith McLachlan, Sim Davis and Sea Soden shared the 2’s pot.

Wednesday, Feb. 2, Bangpra - Stableford
A Flight
1st Pat Hanafin (12) 39pts
2nd Terry Mangan (11) 37pts
B Flight
1st Pat Culloty (20) 32pts
2nd Ajit Amin (18) 31pts

A Flight turned out to be a battle between Co. Wicklow’s Terry Mangan and Co. Cork’s Pat Hanafin. Terry sneaked the last encounter between these two on a count-back in January last year. This time Pat left nothing to chance for his second win in as many games, as he put a two shot gap between them, but it must be said that both Pat and Terry were the only golfers to better par on the day. Seamus Cotter another Cork man and Gavin ‘Wilko’ Knox both came close with par rounds.

B Flight found the lighting fast greens a nightmare as the 32 points from the Co. Kerry man Pat Culloty was good for the top spot. Ajit Amin took the silver as he edged Gerry Hughes by a single stroke.

There were two 2’s today and they belonged to Pat Hanafin as he capped a fine display of golf.

Friday, Feb. 4,Crystal Bay - Stableford
A Flight
1st Gavin Knox (11) 38pts
2nd Seamus Cotter (12) 37pts
3rd Barry Power (0) 36pts
B Flight
1st Geoff Kubas (19) 31pts
2nd Ajit Amin (18) 30pts
3rd John Fogarty (18) 29pts

Gavin ‘Wilko’ Knox, who has darn near paid for his holiday with his society winnings, capped off his fine play with a best on the day 38 points in the senior flight. The smile on Seamus’s face gets bigger every day as his continued fine play gave him the silver a shot back. Barry Power filled the flight with a count-back victory over the unlucky Tore Eliassen, both carding even par rounds.

B Flight showed no respect for the course (I assume they were playing the same course as the senior mob) by having Elvis Kubas posting 31 points to take the top spot (it was nearly returned to sender). Ajit Amin was a shot adrift for the silver, and to say that John Fogarty was gob smacked that his 29 points won him third place would be an understatement.

Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us, just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Frans & Allan lead the way

PSC golf from Mulligan’s Lakeside

Allan Cassin and Bob Edwards, Thursdays form players from Greenwood.

Tuesday, Feb. 1, The Emerald - Stableford

The start of the second month already, man I’m getting old, quick. This Tuesday we travelled to The Emerald on another magic golf day, not too hot, light breeze, now to the golf.

The greens had been lightly sanded and were very quick, especially from above the hole where the word was “impossible”. Frans Olgers (21) continued his recent resurgence with a nice 35 points, followed by Joel Flor (21) and Mike Pledger (19), both with 34 points. Count-back determined that Joel got second, based on his stronger back nine, 18 to Mike’s 16.

Near pins were picked up by Bob and Allan with 2, while 1 went unclaimed, so again a donation to the Banglamung Boys Home.

Thursday, Feb. 2, Greenwood - Stableford

This was our second consecutive Thursday at Greenwood, with this week the A & B combination to be our test.

Tuesday’s winner Frans got off to a hot start with a 4 for 4, but battled from there on. Maintaining some solid scoring over the day was Allan Cassin (12) who played to his handicap for 36 points, followed in by Jeff Wylie (6) with 31. The course was in good condition, so it was disappointing the scores were not better, but it was a nice day for golf.

Near pins proved difficult to achieve with Bob getting 2 on the board while Ken grabbed 1, the other went to the BBH.

Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday (we sometimes change to accommodate a Thai Holiday). Presentations are made at the course on Tuesday, with Mulligans Lakeside hosting the Thursday presentation. For more details on scheduling etc, please call 0890941841 or 0819358088. Hope to see you there, Cheers & Good Golfing!
