United strike late to salvage a point in derby thriller

Staff Reporters

With the Thai Premier League taking a break last weekend as their ‘all stars’ team took on Atletico Madrid in an exhibition game in Bangkok, there was a full league program played out the previous Wednesday evening with arguably the biggest game taking place at the Chonburi Stadium as the hosts entertained the ‘Dolphins’ of Pattaya United.

Chonburi had gained the bragging rights earlier in the season with a come from behind 2-1 victory in Pattaya, so the ‘Dolphins’ were in determined mood to set the record straight on the ground of their fiercest rivals.

Going into the game the Chonburi ‘Sharks’ were coming off the back of a 0-0 home draw against league leaders Muang Thong United the previous weekend, while United had also drawn their last league match, a 1-1 away result at Navy Rayong.

In a first half played at a lively pace, the hosts enjoyed the majority of possession of the ball but they were unable to overcome the stern resistance of the Pattaya rearguard and create any clear cut scoring chances. Both teams left the field at the break with honours relatively even and the score remaining tied at 0-0.

United came out in more offensive mood in the second half and made the breakthrough just three minutes after the interval when Ludovick latched onto a long pass from Sutthisa to beat the covering defence. As the advancing Hathairattanakool came out of the Chonburi goal, the Cameroon striker calmly lobbed the ball over his head to record his tenth goal of the season and make him the Premier League’s leading goal scorer.

It could have been even better for the visitors just 2 minutes later when United’s Patipol Phetwiset found himself on the end of a breathtaking three man move but he volleyed the ball wide with the goal seemingly at his mercy.

Chonburi took full advantage of this let off and gained an equalizing goal in the 60th minute of the game. The ‘Sharks’ forced United into conceding a free kick in a dangerous area just to the right of their penalty area and when full back Samana floated the ball across, Hemdaeng rose higher than anyone to power in a header that flew past Narit into the bottom corner of the net.

Things got worse for United just five minutes later when Chonburi took the lead through a superb strike from debutant Dave Simpson. The Canadian import received the ball at the edge of the United area and before anyone else could react, he thundered in a shot off the underside of the crossbar to give the home team the lead.

With the game opening out at both ends, the two teams threw everything into attack with Therdsak Chaiman in particular providing most of the threat for the ‘Sharks’ while United’s Tana Chanabut made some darting runs down the left to torment the Chonburi defenders. And it was from one of these runs by Tana that United gained a well deserved equalizer in the dying minutes of the game.

Tawatchai Damrong-Ontrakul.

The electric heeled forward outfoxed the Chonburi full back for what seemed like the umpteenth time and cut inside before laying the ball across goal, where Patipol was on hand to knock the ball past Hathairattanakool from close range with the ‘Sharks’ defence rooted to the spot. It was a fitting end to a match in which both teams had given everything and which neither deserved to lose.

With Muang Thong United gaining all three points on the same evening with a hard fought 2-1 win at Rayong, it leaves Chonburi with some ground to make up if they are to dethrone the defending champions this season. There were signs in the game against Pattaya however that the ‘Sharks’ are getting back to their best and they will hope to take that form into this coming Saturday’s game at TTM Pichit.

Pattaya United still remain in fifth spot despite drawing their last two games, albeit both matches being away from home and against their local rivals, Rayong and Chonburi. United will return to their home Nongprue Stadium on Saturday for a match against Royal Thai Army FC and the ‘Dolphins’ will be looking for a win that will take them closer to a top three position. Kick off for the match is scheduled for 6 p.m.

United coach
making a comeback

Pattaya United head coach Tawatchai Damrong-Ontrakul says he has submitted his name to the Thai Premier League to be registered as a playing member of the Pattaya United first team squad for the remainder of this season, in order to help the club out during its current injury crisis.

The 45 year old former Thai international said he’s already hit the gym to get in shape to play, doing weight training and also running with the other players.

“To be back as a player again will mean I have to make some adjustments,” Tawatchai said. “But as a former coach, I know a lot about each player, who to pass to, etc. That factor will help the team very much.”

The coach pointed out that simply submitting his name doesn’t mean he’ll actually take the field anytime soon. But, he added, the team’s roster is stretched thin and some players are out with long term injuries. There are currently 10 vacancies, so he can help fill in the gaps.

Tawatchai called time on his playing days in 2009 with Krabi FC but he spent the majority of his distinguished career at Osotspa Football Club where he scored 60 goals in 252 appearances. The attacking midfielder won a grand total of 73 caps for the Thai national team between 1993-2004 scoring 10 goals.

In other developments, Pattaya United have said that they will likely pass on signing Singaporean striker Norh Alam Zahr due to the player’s excessive salary demands. Coach Tawatchai said the money could be better spent on developing the team’s current crop of new, younger players.

Chonburi continues planning for Dec. sports games

Phasakorn Channgam

Chonburi officials continue hashing out the details of the upcoming National Sports Championship, most recently deciding on the design of the official coin and limiting how many contests will take place on the “Chonburi Games’” final day.

Chonburi Deputy Gov. Songpol Champaphan presided over the latest organizing meeting July 21. Topping the agenda was debate over initial plans to host a whopping 17 different competitions on the final day of the Dec. 9-19 tournament.

Songpol said that was simply too many and that, in the past, other host cities have limited the number of contests so as not to create conflicts with the closing ceremonies and better schedule television broadcasts. The Chonburi Sports Association has been told to rethink its plans.

The meeting also finalized the design of the Chonburi Games coin, which will feature the province’s logo on one side, and reviewed stock levels of sports equipment to determine if more needed to be purchased. A review of the electrical system was also made.

The 39th National Sports Championships will play out at venues in Pattaya, Sriracha and Chonburi. They will be followed by the National Disabled Sports Games Jan. 23-27.

15-year-old girl to represent Thailand in Youth Olympics windsurfing

Adisorn Pollook-in, vice president of the Pattaya City Council, 2nd right, presents a flower basket to Siriporn as a morale booster for the upcoming Youth Olympic Games competition.

Tanachot Anuwan

Hoping to upgrade her Asian Youth Games gold medal into Olympics gold, 15-year-old Siriporn Kaewduang-Ngam will be Thailand’s sole windsurfing representative at this month’s Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games.

Pattana Bunsawat, head coach and advisor to the Windsurfing Association of Thailand, announced the teenagers Olympic bid July 26 in the Techno 293 competition, which kicks off Aug. 17 at Singapore’s National Sailing Center.

Siriporn Kaewduang-Ngam, the sole windsurfing representative from Thailand to compete at the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games this month, shows her championship winning form on the water.

Siriporn is said to be excited to join the Olympic meet, although she is largely preparing on her own, as she will be only part of the larger Yacht Racing Association of Thailand contingent at the games. Windsurfing is bundled in with sailing events.

As a result, she’s had precious little time with Coach Pattana, who also must oversee the sailors. Former windsurfing champs are pitching in to help, but if she’s going to medal in Singapore, the burden rests on her to prepare.

Siriporn has proved to be a Thai windsurfing prodigy, winning medals before she even hit her teens. Most recently, at the Thailand Windsurfing Championships, she won again in the Techno 293 category.

Phuket Raceweek another roaring success

Report by Peter Cummins
Photos by Rolien

After three days of relatively light winds and leaden skies, the last day of the Seventh Six Senses Phuket Raceweek 2010, sailed off the Evason Phuket & Six Senses Spa, on Phuket’s south-eastern coast, started with a real blast. A storm front moved in, engulfing the 39-strong fleet of keel-boats and catamarans, causing havoc, dismastings, and one Malaysian entry to be blown on to the rocks of a nearby island, suffering severe damage.

Pete Dyer’s “Sea Bees”, left, challenges “Tuay Lek” in the IRC 2 Class racing.

Aussie Ben Copley, “Katsu” (9 points) just eased out compatriot, Phuket-domiciled Scott Duncanson “Quantum Fusion M” (10) and Malaysian Anthony Hastings “Baby Tonga” (17) to win the Premier IRC Racing Class.

Mark Chapman “Piccolo” (11) bolted away from Peter Dyer “Sea Bees” (19) and local Thai sailor Jaray Tipsook “Royal Thai Navy 5” (20) in the IRC 2 Class, while Russian sailor, Alex Takhhovski, held on to his lead on “LeRo” (5) to win the IRC 3 class from Hong Kong’s Keith Garry “Beaux Esprits” (10) and Horst Lakits “Big A” (12).

Hiking the boat on “Tuay Lek”.

Much interest focused on the Firefly Class, a light, extremely fast craft, designed and built in Phuket by two Thai-based Aussies, Mark Pescott, the designer and Mark Horwood who turns out the boat at his Phuket yard, Latitude Eight, near the Ao Chalong Yacht Club, a regatta sponsor.

It was Hans Rahmann “Voodoo” (8) who turned out to be the eventual winner, from perennial top performer Roger Kingdon “Moto Inzi” (12) and lady helm Ann Otherone “Sea Property” (16).

Unstoppable team, Henry Kaye and Fergus Wilmer Thor (6), demolished the Multihull fleet, leaving Andy Pape “Da Vinci” (12) and David Liddell “Miss Saigon” (20) in their wake.

“Pink Lady”, right, leads “Voodoo” and “Moto Inzi” downwind in the Firefly Class.

Finally, in the battle of the Classics, Nutt Gunther “Kerida” overcame the antique North Sea ketch – and a regatta fixture – “Bow’s “Seraph”.

This year’s event featured 39 entries, categorized in six classes and, apart from its many other attractions, this regatta is the opening gambit of the 10-event Asia-wide series 2010-201l, comprising Capt. Marty’s coveted Asian Yachting Grand Prix Circuit, with the winner being awarded at the final during the Koh Samui Sawadee.com Regatta held each May.

Grenville Fordham, Managing Director of Image Asia, the rights owner and organizer of the regatta, was hopeful of a fleet of 50, up somewhat from 19 in the inaugural year 2004. But, even with the lesser numbers he was, nevertheless, well pleased with this year’s event, especially as the regatta came just after the recent economic and political upheavals in the Kingdom and, in the case of the former, worldwide.

“Sea Bees” comes to grief as the winds pick up late in the regatta.

The influence of the Phuket Raceweek cannot be overstated when sponsorship expert Paul Poole points out that such a prestigious supporter as Jaguar returned after being happy with last year’s efforts. Along with a long list of co-sponsors and official suppliers, the Tourism and Sports Authorities and the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, as well as the Ao Chalong Yacht Club in a bay contiguous to the Six Senses continue ongoing support.

All these and numerous others will benefit immensely from the worldwide television and media coverage reaching a target viewing audience of some 140 million households. This is certainly also of great benefit to the image of the Kingdom which took a battering earlier this year.

Jaguar, celebrating its 75th year, was a most appropriate sponsor for such an up-market regatta like Raceweek. The newly-unveiled Jaguar XJ is a perfect example of life in the fast-lane while at sea, the fleets are promoting life in the sea-lanes. As the Jaguar Company says: “we didn’t re-invent the wheel; just everything else.”

Another interesting sponsor is Movenpick, the maker of superb Swiss ice cream. One can almost hear the cow-bells resounding in the Alps. At the numerous parties, there is always a long line of ice-cream aficionados at the Movenpick booth. One sailor, not too happy to wait in line, was overheard to say, “Why do they let all these kids take priority.” He then noticed that the huge line was almost entirely adults!

And so, the event closed down, with yet another splendid waterside party, featuring the all-girl band Unicorn and a voluminous flow of Chang beer and Mont Clair wines. Most, if not all the sailors will be back to their favourite regatta this time next year. And. of course, the media and press corp. just cannot wait for 2011!

“Little Soul” loses a mainmast in the final day squall.

Stuart Appleby shoots 59 at Greenbrier Classic

Stuart Appleby hit golf’s magic number last Sunday, shooting a 59 to win the Greenbrier Classic and become the fifth PGA Tour player to reach the low-round record.

The Australian player birdied the final three holes with putts of 15 feet or less to win the tournament by a stroke and get down to 59.

“I was quite comfortable,” Appleby said. “It’s not a nerve-racking thing to be involved in. I had a lot of opportunities and I made them. It was great to do that to win the tournament.”

Appleby’s round came less than a month after Paul Goydos shot a 59 at the John Deere Classic.

The others to shoot 59 were Al Geiberger at the 1977 Memphis Classic, Chip Beck at the 1991 Las Vegas Invitational and David Duval at the 1999 Bob Hope Classic.

IPGC Sunday Golf at Green Valley

Sunday, July 18 - Stableford
1st Russell Exley 38pts
2nd John Squitiero 37pts
3rd Rod Howett 35pts

Russell Exley hit form today with a splendid 38 points to see off John Squitiero from Las Vegas by a single point. Rod Howett, Haven regular, patron of the famous Rifle Hostelry in the Fulham Road, and long suffering Fulham Football Club supporter, played steadily to secure third place with a sound 35 points.
Russell Exley, not content with winning, took the only ‘2’ of the day.

Sunday, July 25 - Stableford
1st Al Keith 40pts
2nd Chris Knapp 34pts
3rd Markuu Tynell 34pts

Al Keith is in great form and strutted his stuff in fine style today to easily see off the remainder of the pack. Chris Knapp battled away to narrowly beat Markuu Tynell for second place on count back.

Markuu Tynell is a Finnish national and regular Pattaya visitor who plays steady golf. He will soon be in the winner’s enclosure.
Two ‘2’s were scored today by Chris Knapp and Kevin Hamilton.

Sunday, August 1 - Stableford
1st Bob Maloney 35pts
2nd Al Keith 34pts
3rd Chris Knapp 33pts

Bob Maloney from Perth, Western Australia, took the honours on a low scoring day with a steady 35 points. Al Keith, who is never far off the pace these days, was close behind with 34 points but just failed to match Bob’s tenacity on the day. Chris Knapp took the minor honours.

Al Keith scored the only ‘2’ of the day.

Presentations were held at the Golf Centre Bar where hosts John and Geoff, assisted by their lovely staff, took excellent care of the golfers.

Gladden takes monthly award in tight finish

PSC golf from the Bunker Bar

Monday, July 26,
Rayong C.C. - Stableford

Gerry Cooney is making a late surge for the ‘golfer of the month title’ and he won again today here, beating Bob Turner who took the runner up place after taking a count-back decision over Mashi Kaneta. Mashi’s third place also keeps him in touch with the leaders too.

Bruce Gladden – the Bunker golfer of the month for July.

In the near pin competition, only three greens were hit so Gerry Cooney, Mashi and Bob Turner shared the kitty.

Wednesday, July 28, Greenwood - Medal

Yet another golfer came into the frame in the ‘golfer of the month’ competition in the shape of Eddie Martin, and a fine figure of a man he is too! Eddie’s one under par was enough to win today’s Medal round ahead of Brian Maddox in second place and Gerry Cooney picked up some useful points by finishing third.

Only three greens were hit again today in the near pins, one by the in-form Gerry Cooney the other two went to Geoff Parker and Eddie Martin.

Friday, July 30, Mountain Shadow - Stableford

There were four golfers in with a shout for the monthly title in the last game in July played at Mountain Shadow: Mashi, Bruce Gladden, Eddie Martin and Gerry Cooney all needed a win today to win it, but it was early leader Bruce Gladden who came back in style to win on the day and pip Gerry Cooney to win the ‘golfer of the month’ trophy by just one point!

Geoff Parker was runner up today and unlucky Gerry could only finish third.

Bruce’s win was the first time for him and puts another new name on the golfer of the month trophy so congratulations go to him!

Takeshi Hakozaki took two of the day’s near pins with the other two going to Alan Sullivan and Gerry Cooney.
1st Bruce Gladden (16) 35pts
2nd Geoff Parker (16) 33pts
3rd Gerry Cooney (10) 31pts

Count backs galore at Crystal Bay

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Monday, July 26, Eastern Star – Stableford

Monday was another overcast day with a gentle breeze off the coast and a few spots of rain halfway round which made it a comfortable day for the players.

Wednesday’s runner-up team: Kung, Nang and Nom.

Colin James took his first share of the pot since his arrival after coming in third in Division 1 with 31 points. Tom Sathrum is improving every week and came in second with 34, but Russell Benson took the honours, winning with 36 points.

Jim Lane was the winner in Division 2 with an even par 36 points and he was followed in Terry Cowell in second on 35.

There were no ‘2’s in Division 1 but a chip-in from off the green on the 6th earned Glyn Evans the only ‘2’ in Division 2.

Wednesday, July 28, Crystal Bay – Stableford

There are major road works on Sukhumvit so the easiest route now from Siam Cats is up the 7, two exits past Khao Kheow, come off and take the short trip into Mountain Shadow, drive down the path on the third hole, cross the railway line and arrive at the clubhouse at Crystal Bay. For some reason our car was the only one allowed on this route, all the others were stopped at the gate so it’s back to passing the Bangpra course again until we resolve this issue.

Today was our fun game of the month with eleven teams of three in a 1-2-3 competition and also three divisions in an individual stableford contest as well. It rained heavily for 15 minutes before our tee off but by the time the first group went out it had stopped and a dry round was experienced by all.

There will be another reduction in her handicap for next week as the Burapha caddie, Miss Kung won today with 39 points ahead of Miss Nom in second on 29.

In his last game but one before his return Down Under, and the first time he has ever beaten his handicap here, Colin James took out Division 1 with 39 points. Andy Baber meanwhile beat Chris Voller on a 20/17 back nine count-back for second after the both came in with 36 points.

Gordon Everingham’s 40 points was enough to win Division 2, and with a count-back of 21/16 Russell Benson beat Alan Bissell for runner-up spot after they both scored 35 points.

Mam Morel birdied the 7th on the B course for the only ‘2’ in the ladies flight and Tony Duthie was the only winner in the men’s two divisions with his ‘2’ on 7C.

Near pins went to Miss Nang (x2), Bill Hewitt, Harry Vincenzi, Alan Bissell (x2), Bryan Rought, Joe Kubon, Miss Kung and Mikael Andersson.

In the team event the lowest score of the day was 55, but an amazing five teams came in with 74 points to fight for the three positions, all on a back nine count-back. Gordon Everingham, Jean and Mam Morel lost out with 45 and so did Mikael Andersson, Roy Thornton and Chris Voller who also finished on the same score. In third place with 46 and in the winnings were Keith Hector, Bill Hewitt and Colin James. In second place, one point ahead, were Miss Kung, Miss Nang and Miss Nom, and the winners today with 48 on the back nine were Russell Benson, Tony Holehouse and Burnie Sinclair. Well done to all three of you.

Friday, July 30, Eastern Star – Stableford

As we all teed off there were a few spots of intermittent rain and this lasted for seven holes. What a cool and welcome start to this round.

There was only one lady out today as they were all taking a rest. Ya Riley is still playing off the white tees with the men and she took second place today in Division 1 with 33 points. Colin James just edged Ya for top spot with his 34 points.

Jim Lane came second in Division 2 with 32 points and a surprise winner after weeks in the doldrums was Glyn Evans with 34.

After nine rollovers in the ‘2’s Geoff Pickin finally made one stick by getting a birdie on the 13th to take the maximum pot in Division 2. There were no winners in the top flight.

Rodney Hayes & Don Everett take the Medals

IPGC golf from The Haven

Monday’s scramble winners (L-R): Chris Davidson,

Monday, July 26, Green Valley - 4 Man Scramble

Once again Russell Exley performed wonders in getting out so many teams, when the rest of the Pattaya area is bereft of golfers, for the now regular monthly scramble out of The Haven. It could have been the added benefit of specially priced green fees in lieu of the usually high holiday prices or maybe the condition of the course, which is in such great shape at the present time. Or possibly the promise of a choice of any meal off the menu back at The Haven included in the all up price of 1,600 baht for the day, but mostly it was Russell’s efforts to speak to as many people as possible and get them signed up for the day, whatever the reason, a full compliment of diners in the restaurant prior to the prize giving, attested to the success of the day.

With the now standard rules of maximum five drives per team member and 12.5% of the combined handicaps allowance and stroke play scoring, the contest was very closely contested with the team of Chris, Stefan, Paul and Doug running out clear-cut winners after an equal best gross of 62, five under on both nines, to lead by just over two shots.

In second place Phil, Andy, Shuichi, and Ian just got the better of a count back that had to go to the back six which they won with a net 18.5 to 18.8 after they had shared the inward nine at 27.25 each with Rodney, Brian, Mike and Mike.

The team comprising Steve, Al, Trevor and Chris, the lowest handicappers of the day, slipped into fourth spot after returning the equal best low round and Mark, Bill, Geoff and Sus rounded out the honourable mentions in fifth place.

4th Rodney Hayes (10) 35pts
5th Warren Gallop (11) 34pts
6th Shuichi Kodaka (17) 34pts

Greenwood is one of the local courses that can be extremely easy or quite difficult dependant on where the green-keeping staff place the tee boxes and when the C course is part of the mix, the difficulty rating goes up another notch.

On this day the tees were well back and the courses played were A and C and there was very little run to be found on the fairways, but with winter rules of ‘lift and place’ in the fairways, the scoring was very good indeed.

Russell Exley, without the pressures of organisation weighing him down, had an outstanding round which included two double bogeys on the 9th and 18th holes, 2 birdies, 12 pars, and 2 bogeys for a gross 76 which was good enough by three to see off the challenge of Trevor Schirmer with a level par round.

Trevor just got the better of the count-back over Brian Henderson by 15 to 14 for second place.

Rodney Hayes slipped into fourth spot a further shot back with Warren Gallop just getting the nod over Shuichi Kodaka with a better count-back of 17 to 13 after the latter had lit up the front nine.

Rodney Hayes had the only 2 in the first division and Shuichi Kodaka had the lone one in the second division.

Before presenting the prizes Stephen Beard welcomed back Tom McCarthy from a stint in sunny Afghanistan and Markku Tynell and also had farewells for Brian Henderson, Mike Hill and Mike English.

With Rodney Hayes in top form for the week it was not too surprising to find him at the top of the heap in the first division with a solid two under round, which very neatly gets his handicap back to exactly where it was before he returned from Sydney with a newer and higher handicap, following the AGU’s adoption of the new handicap system.

Trevor Schirmer, who is also in good form this week just pipped Al Keith with a better count back of 34.5 to 35.5 after Al had put in what he would surely have thought was a winning inward half of a gross 38 only to see Trevor’s 41 just edge him into third place. Al will be well satisfied with the day’s score which has dropped him down to under 4 handicap after several good rounds recently.

The Second Division saw a first time medal winner in Don Everett, who had taken on board good advice to “play the course with the shots allowed with his handicap” and was proficient enough to take the top spot by two strokes and claim his first Monthly Medal.

Chris Knapp, who can always be relied upon to play the course well, slipped into second spot with a better count back of 24.4 to 24.7 on the back six after he had equaled Rod Howetts’s outward half of 37.5.

Al Keith had the sole 2 in the first division and Sid Ottaway had the only one in the second division.

Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group you can contact mobile 084 782 4582 or call in to the hotel at 185 Soi 13 between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays and Sundays on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Todd climbs to top spot

PSC golf from Café Kronborg

Stuart Rifkin

Thursday, July 28, Treasure Hill – Stableford

As usual we all met at Café Kronborg for our regimental departure at 8.15 a.m. The Admiral was there to ensure there were no laggers, however he was unable to join us for the day as his ankle problem had resurfaced. Aussie Mike Gosden bravely took the helm for the day and with the aid of a few helpers, including Aussies Martin Todd and Paul Avery, he managed to ensure everyone had an enjoyable time and were returned home to the Kronborg safely later in the day.

Friday winner Martin Todd, left, with ‘The Admiral’.

The first group teed off at 10 a.m. and the weather was perfect with a nice steady breeze of about 6 knots and the temperature about 30 degrees Celsius (Go weep WA).

The course was in tip top condition and further improvement is assured as many tees were under renovation. The 17th par three green was also under repair and a cute temporary green was in use. Although only 105 yards long, the small green looked like a postage stamp from the tee but this did not deter Martin Todd who left the ball 4 inches from the hole! Another Aussie, Alan Sanders (Colonel), had a unique score of 9 points in two holes … Alas, that was his only claim to fame for the day.

We welcomed three guests today: Soren Linkuist and Tourbeen Peterson, both hailing from Sweden, and the Colonel (Alan Sanders) from the Gold Coast in Queensland Australia. There was also a welcome back to Mike Winfield who has returned from his home in the USA and showed he still has some touch.

Yours truly was spurred on by the tousle his group were having, to take out the A grade first spot, closely followed by Ted Morris in second place and Martin Todd slotting into third position. B grade was won by Les Hall with Hugh O’Donnell coming second and Mike Winfield in the money, taking out third. The illustrious Compass Cap was won on a count back and first time recipient Ken Bernek was very generous with his donation to the bin. The total for the year so far is now 2,470 baht and eventually these funds will be donated to a Children’s Charity here in Pattaya.

1st Stuart Rifkin (16) 37pts
2nd Ted Morris (13) 36pts
3rd Martin Todd (7) 34pts
B Flight (17+)

2nd Hugh O’Donnell (23) 30pts
3rd Mike Winfield (19) 29pts

Friday, July 30, Greenwood – Stableford

Friday obviously clashed with prior engagements for many Café Kronborg regulars as only one bus was required to ferry the eight stalwarts who were piped aboard by the Admiral at 8.15 a.m. on the dot! 55 minutes later we were paying our dues at the club and a “special” of game, caddy, cart, free water, free beer and free light meal for 1,500 baht was accepted by half the group.

The Admiral’s foursome led the way at 9.40 a.m. under a beautiful blue sky, about 32 degrees with a slight tail breeze on the “C” course with zip in front. “A” course was played next and again it was millionaire’s golf as nobody else was to be seen.

We were pleasantly surprised when a group of ladies caught up to us, all laughing and having a good time. Further surprise when they started saying hello and using our names! It took a short while to work out that they were our regular caddies from Khao Kheow out for a day’s golf themselves, but due to their attire (no caddie uniform) we simply could not place them (dumb farangs!)

The course was still in tip top condition with superb greens and fairways. Bunkers were well maintained however the tees were about three days short of a haircut!

Only one flight today due to the limited field and Martin Todd moved up the winners circle and took out first place with 36 points whilst the consistent Paul Avery came second one point behind. Doug Maiko took third on a count-back from Hugh O’Donnell on 34 points.

Your truly was the Compass Cap Charity donor today only because Mike Winfield claimed he has already donated his entire annual budget to charity this year!

1st Martin Todd (7) 36pts
2nd Paul Avery (11) 35pts
3rd Doug Maiko (14) 34pts

Emerson masters the wet conditions

PSC golf from the Three Sisters Bar

The rain lasted right up to tee time of 6:30 a.m. at the Pattaya Country Club on Wednesday, July 28. The course was very, very wet and in almost all cases, where your ball landed ... that’s where it stayed.

Winner Larry Emerson, left, with runner-up Bill Thompson.

The wet course may explain some very low scores by usually good golfers. At least that was their excuse. Back at Caddy Shack II as score cards were tallied, players got to enjoy some really good sandwich furnished by Herbie.

Coming in with 39 points to win the day was Larry Emerson, a full six points ahead of Bill Thompson in second. Dale Murphy and Herbie Ishinaga also came in with 33’s but Bill took it on the count-back.

A clean sweep for Mashi

Wednesday, July 28, Burapha – Stableford

We do not usually play Burapha because the ‘Sports Day’ is on a Wednesday and we play Tuesday and Friday, so having a Holiday on Tuesday gave us a fine excuse to play here.

Mashi Kaneta, center, is presented with the ‘Golfer of the Month’ and ‘Golfer of the Year’ awards by Alan Bolton Property Consultants representatives, Ann and Fara.

This day was always going to be a little bit special as it was not only ‘The Alan Bolton Property Consultants Golfer of the Month’ but also the ‘Golfer of the Year’ to be decided. What made it even better was playing at Burapha on a nearly empty course, in near perfect weather. Indeed it was a little overcast but we only had a bit of ‘spitty rain’ that just helped to cool us down.

The day started as normal with one of Bert’s breakfasts then we had a sit around and a chat while we all worked out that the winner of the ‘Golfer of the Month’ was up for grabs by practically anyone. We had plenty of time because it is only a short way up to Burapha and we could get there in quick order.

Booking in at Burapha is relatively easy, first get changed then pay the green fee and then out of the back door to where your clubs are on a cart. One of the reasons many do not play the course regularly is because you have to take a cart, and indeed we did have a couple of players who did not play specifically because of this. However, for me the main thing is the two nines we play and on this day it was A & C. I must admit I like A & B best but beggars can’t be choosers.

On the first tee and off we went and as already said the weather was great, a bit windy but reasonable, the fairways were firm and we could take carts on them. The rough was tough, and I mean just that, get your ball in it and you could lose it. Not only that but it was difficult to get out of. However the greens were in fine condition, dry and fast and after some of the ‘velcro’ offerings we have played on lately a pleasure to putt on. Surely some golfers must play well, and not only the usual suspect who was again in the running.

The restaurant here is a fine one, and many partook of the fare before departing back to Bert’s, where they found that Bert and Pu had laid on free fish and chips for all the golfers. Some wished they had not eaten at Burapha, but surprisingly all managed to eat their quota. Thanks to Bert and Pu who look after the golfers at Tropical Bert’s and it is much appreciated.

Then we got into the presentations and it quickly became apparent that the day, as in fact had the year, was going to be ‘The Mashi Kaneta Show’. Give him his due he is rock solid.

The day was won by Mashi with 39 points ahead of Walter Baechli with 38 points in second. Dick Warberg came in with 36 points for third and in fourth we had Neil Shaw with 34.

Mashi also won a couple of near pins to have a great day on the course.

The Alan Bolton Property Consultant’s ‘Golfer of The Month’ award deservedly went to Mashi’s for the fifth time in the year.

So to the prime competition of the year, and with his five monthly wins it was no surprise that the runaway winner of the Alan Bolton Property Consultants ‘Golfer of The Year’ Award was also Mashi Kaneta. Ann and Fara were there to represent Alan Bolton and present the annual trophy, the personal trophy and the golf bag to out winner. Well done Mashi and thanks to Alan Bolton who has confirmed he will be sponsoring us for a fifth year next year.

Till then and with Mashi ringing the bell, twice, T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Mashi (2), Derek Brook, Henry O’Brien

Kathy comes home

PSC golf from Lewiinski’s

Sunday, July 25, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Vic Hester (14) 39pts
2nd Seamus Cotter (11) 37pts
3rd Chris Davisson (13) 36pts
B Flight
1st Kathy Doody (19) 43pts
2nd Stefan Hoge (16) 38pts
3rd Keith McLachlan (18pts
Near Pins:
No4 Stefan Hoge, No9 Pat Reagan, No12 Chaten Patel, No16 Nick Payne.

Sunday’s winner Kathy Doody.

Every time the scribe picks up the scorecards for the Sunday’s comp at Green Valley he checks quickly to see how Kathy ‘The Shropshire Belle’ Doody did. She didn’t disappoint this day as she had the B Flight winning best of 43 points. That left a dog fight for second between the big Canadian Stefan Hoge and the red hot Keith McLachlan who sportingly cut himself two shots before today’s comp. The former won out on the math’s.

Vic Hester stood atop the A Flight podium but needed every trick in his well worn but extensive book of golf tricks to edge the ‘Silent Assassin’ Captain Seamus Cotter, although Seamus played despite being a little under the weather. Chris what’s his name was in his usual Sunday form, rounding out the flight with a solid even par round.

Wednesday, July 28, Bangpra - Stableford
1st Colin Davis (14) 37pts
2nd Esseth Morten (20) 35pts

Man of the match with a fine 37 points was Colin Davis who has made a handicap move over the past several months but has leveled off recently. Today he sizzled on the back nine with seven straight pars. This A Flight winning effort would suggest that more progress could be expected from ‘the Donkey’, despite playing three or four times a week, managing the society, and other business commitments.

The silver was sorted out on a count-back at 35 points between Esseth Morten and Tony Oakes, the scales tipping in Esseth’s favour.
No ‘2’s were recorded so it’s a rollover on Friday.

Friday, July 30, Khao Kheow - Stableford
A Flight
1st Pat Reagan (11) 34pts
2nd Mike Jeffries (16) 33pts
B Flight
1st Peter Henshaw (19) 34pts
2nd Jim Bell (22) 34pts

Well I know it is not St Patrick’s Day, but you could have been forgiven if you thought it was, as one of Dublin’s favorite sons won A Flight and the other won B Flight. Young Pat Reagan took top place in the senior flight with 34 points, one stroke ahead of the consistent Mike Jeffries.

Peter ‘Don O’Corleone’ Henshaw topped the B Flight, again with 34 points, but it took a count-back to separate Peter from the unlucky Aussie Jim Bell.

John Bahng won a handy rollover ‘2’s pot.

Reliable sources have indicated that Lou Zig Zag has been glancing at the write up and is due a return visit shortly?

Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Near & far, better than work

PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside

Tuesday, July 27, Rayong C.C. - Stableford

Tuesday was a holiday, but we decided to press on with our scheduled day as Rayong CC was offering some good promotional prices. The course was in good order and was good value for money when all was considered.

Tuesday’s winner Jim Bell with Thursday runner-up Geoff Cox.

Some fine scores were signed for at the end of the day, none better than Jim Bell (H/cap22) who had a commendable 39 points, just edging Jeff Wylie (6) into second spot, after he had returned to some decent form with 38 points.

The near pins went to Jim and Jeff, with Bob getting 2.

Thursday, July 29, Bangpakong CC - Stableford

Thursday was the longest trip we had made for a while but as Bangprakong River CC was having Sport Day the group decided we would give it a go. Several of the crew had not played there before, while others had not been for a long while. The course did not disappoint anybody; with well grassed fairways and smooth, true rolling greens what more could you ask for?

Again there were several good scores, more so than prizes on this occasion, but this is more the norm at this open, forgiving course. Best on the day was Jeff Wylie (6) with 39 points, while second spot went to Geoff Cox (16) with a well compiled 37 points, edging Ken Hole (14) on a count-back, 21 to 20 on the back 9.

The near pins were spread around between Ed, Geoff, Bob & Jeff.

A highlight of the day was Ed’s 5-pointer on the 9th where he made birdie. With 2 shots on the hole, they add up quick, however he just missed the podium, with 36 points.

Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday (we sometimes change to accommodate a Thai Holiday). Presentations are made at the course on Tuesday, with Mulligans Lakeside hosting the Thursday presentation. For more details on scheduling etc, please call Jeff 089 094 1841 or Ray 081 935 8088. Hope to see you there, Cheers & Good Golfing!

Amphan makes it two in a row

Golf from the Travellers Rest

Barry Hooper

The ladies amongst our regular players are a real force to contend with. None more so than Amphan North, who is playing some very good golf these days despite her illness problems and what a great pleasure that is to see for all who know her.

Saturday’s winner Amphan North, bottom right, with Mod Chaviraksa, Allan Hansen and Liam Horgan.

This past week was no exception and she is it seems making Saturday outings all her own with the second winning one in a row with thirty-four points at the Emerald. I also see at the same outing that our (Mr. ‘2’) has returned from his travels. I am of course referring to Ted Senior no less, who also picked up fourth spot on Saturday.

So to continue with reports on the three days of golf this past week.

Wednesday, July 28, St. Andrews - Stableford
1st John Hall (8) 32pts
2nd George Robinson (12) 30pts
3rd Robert Cannon (24) 28pts
4th Richard Talbot (19) 28pts

On Wednesday a very small group visited St Andrews/Green Valley again. I have it on record that the course was in excellent shape and played well.

John Hall made the most of things and returned 32 points for the win. In second spot was George Robinson on 30 who was still licking his wounds after his screw up over his card on the previous Saturday. Third place went down to Robert Cannon on 28 after beating Richard Talbot on the count-back, 17 to 14.

Two ‘2’s on the day came from John Dean and Fergus Brennan.

Thursday, July 29, Phoenix – Stableford
Div 1
1st Warren Gallop (11) 42pts
2nd Rodney Hayes (10) 39pts
3rd Mod Chaviraksa (12) 36pts
4th Jon Dean (8) 36pts
Div 2
1st Roger Wilkinson (15) 36pts
2nd Richard Talbot (19) 33pts
3rd Gareth Herbert (32) 32pts
4th Liam Horgan (13) 31pts

Thursday was our traditional visit to Phoenix to play Lakes and Ocean. We had a good turnout so two divisions.

I previously remarked how this course seems to favour the ladies, but not so this week. The best any lady could manage was a third spot for Mod Chaviraksa with 36 points in Division 1, beaten by Rodney Hayes and at the top of the list Warren Gallop with his fine 42 points. I understand that Warren teaches golf in China so he obviously knows a thing or two about the game.

In Division 2 it was Roger Wilkinson heading the field with an even par 36 points, a full three up on Richard Talbot in second but who still improved one place from the previous day. Gareth Herbert was third at thirty-two.

Two ‘2’s came from Fergus Brennan and Warren Gallop.

Saturday, July 31, The Emerald – Stableford
1st Amphan North (10) 34pts
2nd Roger Wilkinson (15) 33pts
3rd Mod Chaviraksa (12) 32pts
4th Ted Senior (12) 31pts
5th Liam Horgan (13) 31pts

On Saturday it was back to the Banchang area, this time to Emerald with a good turnout.

We had one division but places down to fifth and that went to Liam Horgan after losing on the count back to Ted Senior. Liam was reported as a having a “Flash Gordon” round - pretty darn quick, but always left then right (you have to think about that one).

In third place was Mod Chaviraksa but Roger Wilkinson bettered her score by one for second spot. Going even one better than that for her second Saturday win in a row was Amphan North.

Amphan also made a ‘2’ along with Allan Hansen and Mr. ‘2’ himself Ted Senior.

The Nagger Award (adopted from an Australian tradition so I understand) for last spot was awarded to Gareth Herbert who was seen to down the beer that has to be drunk from a pot that resembles a part of the female anatomy in one go. That is no easy task, believe me.

Scotty cans an ‘Ace’ at St. Andrews

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Joey’s column

Monday, July 26, Burapha - Stableford

The holiday rates at Burapha today reduced the field to just 18 Outbackers on the A & B nines from the blue tees, as many of the regulars either chose not to play or sought out better rates on other local courses.

Friday’s top three: Rogan (Div C winner) with Sel (Div B winner) and Mark (Div A winner).

However, it was good to be back on the regular course (A & B) rather than the odd combinations over the last couple of months or so.

Bruce Milner showed the way with the day’s top score of 39 points to win Div A comfortably from El Suggs and Peter Stonebridge both on 35. Brian Maddox followed his Khao Kheow win last Friday with another one here, taking Div B with 38 points from Nev Steward (35pts) and Sakorn with 34, beating Johnny Sacasmo on count-back.

There were two ‘2’s from Nev Steward and Tony Garnett.

Div A (0-19)
1st Bruce Milner (13) 39pts
2nd Eldridge Suggs (18) 35pts
3rd Peter Stonebridge (15) 35pts
Div B (20+)
1st Brian Maddox (20) 38pts
2nd Neville Steward (20) 35pts
3rd Sakorn Pramoolchart (23) 34pts

Tuesday, July 27, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford

With lots of overnight rain, the 24 Outbackers who chose to play at Pattaya Country Club this Tuesday wondered how the course would play. No problem! Whilst wet in patches, it was in reasonable shape and with PCC charging their ‘normal’ rate on this Thai holiday, all was set for a good day - as was seen by the results.

The weather was cool making it comfortable for this time of year and although busier than of late, we were away on time with rounds of just a little over four hours.

The Kiwi’s are still with us (although there were cries from the field – “when are you going home?”) Having stuffed the South Africans at rugby they are now stuffing the Outbackers, but they helped make another international field, and we welcomed PCC member Chris John playing with us for the first time.

In Division A it was two of our Kiwi friends taking first and third places with Dion coming in with a fine 41 points for top spot. Splitting the pair was our very own General Jack with 36 points and the final place went to Geoff Christie with 35 – on count-back.

Dion has now been cut to 10 for the last few rounds of his trip.

Continuing the International theme in Division B, the three top places went to a Brit, a Kiwi and a Norwegian. In top spot was PCC member Nigel Cannon (23) with 37 points, second was Rogan Hampson (34) with 36, and third was Espin Christoffersen (29) with 35.
There were two ‘2’s from Geoff Christie and Nigel Cannon.
Note:
The Outback has a regular slot at PCC each Tuesday at 09.30.

Div A (0-19)
1st Dion Lane (12) 41pts
2nd Jack Moseley (13) 36pts
3rd Geoff Christie (5) 35pts
Div B (20+)
1st Nigel Cannon (23) 37pts
2nd Rogan Hampson (34) 36pts
3rd Espin Christoffersen (29) 35pts

Wednesday, July 28, Phoenix - Stableford

A couple of weeks ago there were 19 Outbackers here at Phoenix; today we were down to just 9! That’s how unpredictable the golfing market is at the moment.

With Capt’ Bob and Jack on other duties, Suzi organised the day’s tournament which turned out to be only mediocre in scoring terms. B2 won with 34 points, followed in by three all on 31 with B1 getting the nod on count-back over Tony and his good lady, Sakorn.
There was one ‘jackpot 2’ from Ryan Kneale.

1st Bruce McAdam (23) 34pts
2nd Bruce Milner (13) 31pts
3rd Sakorn Pramoolchart (21) 31pts

Friday, July 30, St. Andrews - Stableford

A full complement of 42 Outbackers descended upon St. Andrews, this week’s Friday venue, whilst Laem Chabang was hosting a tournament. Next Friday we’re back at Khao Kheow but we return to St Andrews again on August 13.

By the Outback’s usual standards the start was a bit of a mess (apologies all round), nevertheless there was some excellent scoring in all divisions, with 81% scoring 30 points or more in Div A, 77% in Div B and 69% in Div C, which is all a very good standard on a course of this calibre.

It was presented in very good condition with the grainy greens running very true and looking pleasing to the eye and the fairways were well covered in grass giving way to some lovely lies, just inviting a good next shot.

Scotty shows off his souvenir golf ball.

Thirty seven points was the top score of the day, achieved by Mark McDonald (Div A winner), Sel Wegner (Div B winner), Eddie Beilby (Div B runner up) and Rogan Hampson (Div C winner). Mark’s was a particularly good effort, as playing off a H/cap of just 4, it represented the day’s low gross of 77; which he may have been a little disappointed with, having played the front nine to level par and dropping all his shots on the back including a double on the long par 3 seventeenth.

Steve Mann and Paul Greenaway both shot 36’s to take second and third respectively in Div A from a whole bunch with 35 points led by Kev Watson; whilst the minor places in Div B were filled by Andy Robertson and George Bishop. Div C meanwhile had four players all queued up behind the winner, all on 34, led by Bruce McAdam.

Finally, the shot of the day, which collected the entire ‘2’s pot and invalidating all those who had scored a ‘2’, was Scotty Qua’s hole-in-one on the Par 3 fifth. Scotty said he hit his 9 iron a little skinny but a couple of hops across the green and it found its target, for which we believe is only Scotty’s second Ace.

Back at the bar, Scotty rang the bell to celebrate his success with everybody and the guys who had ‘2’s presented Scotty with a special memento golf ball, with the words – “nice shot d***head.” Great Shot mate!

Div A (0-12)
1st Mark McDonald (4) 37pts
2nd Steve Mann (10) 36pts
3rd Paul Greenaway (11) 36pts
4th Kevin Watson (9) 35pts
Div B (13-17)
1st Sel Wegner (14) 37pts
2nd Eddy Beilby (17) 37pts
3rd Andrew Robertson (15) 34pts
4th George Bishop (16) 34pts
Div C (18+)
1st Rogan Hampson (34) 37pts
2nd Bruce McAdam (23) 34pts
3rd Geoff Williams (22) 34pts
4th Sugar Ray Handford (19) 34pts

Bridge in Paradise: by Neil Robinson

This is another deal from a Bridge Club of Chiang Mai pairs game.  I chose it to write about because of the variety of contracts reached.  East-West were vulnerable and South dealt.

                           S: 82

                           H: KQJ654

                           D: -

                           C: KQ1085

S: KQJ1075                              S: A64

H: 9                                            H: 2

D: J842                                      D: AKQ93

C: 97                                          C: A642

                           S: 93

                           H: A10873

                           D: 10765

                           C: J3

The start of the bidding was probably the same at all tables - South passes and West opens a weak two spades.  At one table the contract played by West was three spades, making eleven tricks.  It seems rather unadventurous of East, with such a big hand, to allow the bidding to stop short of game.

At another table, East-West reached four spades and made twelve tricks (six spades, five diamonds and the ace of clubs).

When it came to the table where I was sitting North, there was no such quiet bidding - the final contract was a doubled grand slam in hearts by North-South.  This is how it went:

South          West          North       East

P                   2S              4H            6S

7H               P                 P               Dbl

All pass

You can tell there were no bashful bidders at our table.  West opened a weak two clubs.  My hand looked like it had only four losers - two spades and the aces of hearts and clubs.  My partner had already passed, so I went straight to 4H, hoping my partner could cover one of these losers.

East was having none of this.  He looked at his controls (three aces and a singleton) and points and went directly to slam - an excellent bid.  Now it was up to my partner to take the bit in his teeth.  South saw five hearts (and no defence) in his hand and bid grand slam as a non-vulnerable sacrifice.  Not surprisingly, this got doubled.  East led the ace of clubs followed by the ace of diamonds (the ace of spades would have been better, but who would expect a first round diamond ruff!).  This was ruffed in hand, trumps pulled and board’s spades were thrown on the good clubs.

Twelve tricks made for down only one - a good result thanks to South’s 7H bid.

International line up at Green Valley

PSC golf from The Golf Club Sports Bar & Grill

Monday, July 26, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight (0-13)
1st Steve Rawlings (3) 38pts
2nd John Low (12) 38pts
3rd Brad Sproxton (9) 37pts
4th Bob Newell (7) 36pts
B Flight (14+)
1st Jez Lees (18) 38pts
2nd Nigel Flanagan (17) 36pts
3rd Mick Beresford (24) 35pts
4th Kevin Moraghan (14) 35pts

There was a great turn out in terms of numbers and some even greater golf played on this Buddha holiday. Lots of familiar faces attended and we welcomed some returnees. Thanks to John, Dion, Geoff and Rogan from New Zealand and Steve and Adam from Oz.

We split the prizes into two groups today. In group A Steve Rawlings (Aus) fired 38 points with a back nine 20 points to edge out John Low (NZ) for first place. Brad Sproxton (CAD) came third on 37 and Bob “Seamless” Newell (UK) was fourth on 36 points.

In Group B Jez Lees (UK) took top spot with 38 points while Nigel Flanagan (USA) was second on 36. Mick Beresford (UK) finally hit payday with a fine 35 points, including 20 on the back, to edge out Kevin Moraghan (USA), also on 35 points, for third.

There was one match within the comp today that was of interest. A clash for the Ashes battle took place between Steve and Adam from Oz and Bob and Jez from the UK. We hear that they are already setting up the rematch as the “Boyz from Down Under” were victorious.

Wednesday, July 28, Siam Plantation A & B – Stableford
1st Dion Lane (12) 38pts
2nd Benn Nelson (14) 37pts
3rd John Low (13) 35pts
4th Brad Sproxton (9) 34pts

We had another good turnout for our day at Siam Plantation A & B courses. The word of the day was “wind”. Rain earlier in the morning had made the course fairly mushy under foot and the swirling winds added to the day’s challenges.

The lumberjack Dion Lane smashed drive after drive down the fairways and recorded the day’s best score of 38 points. Benn Wilson kept the ball low into the wind and turned in a fine 37 points for second with John Low third on 35 and Brad Sproxton taking fourth on 34.

Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro, off Soi Buakhao and Soi Diana junction. We can be reached on 085 434 3377 or [email protected] and our new website is www.golfclubpattaya.com.

Diana Seniors and Ladies July Open

Nigel Cannon

There were just 14 players in this month Diana Seniors and Ladies Open at Pattaya Country Club on Thursday July 29. The competition was played with the usual three flights and following the overnight rain a ‘pick and place’ ruling was introduced, however as the course dried out this proved unnecessary later in the round.

July winners: Roger Stromstetd, Siripen Hormkum and Arthur Bailey.

The course was in a reasonable condition although time did not allow for the bunkers to be raked.

Those who did take part had an enjoyable day with all 3 winners playing to their handicap or better.

Two of the regular ladies were in the frame with Siripen Hormkum (H/cap 10) coming first with a fine 39 points and Pimusa Tonkhoksoong (13) was runner-up with 33.

In the Seniors it was Roger Stromstetd (16) with 38 points in top spot and Mike Coleman (14) with 31 points was runner-up after beating Bill Johnson on count-back.

It was ‘Superman Arthur’ aka Arthur Bailey (24) taking first in the Super Seniors with 36 points, which at 82 years of age was a great achievement. Runner-up and also a PCC member was Barry Chadbourn (17) with 31 points.

All these scores are submitted to Pattaya Sports Club.

The next Diana Seniors and Ladies open will be on Thursday August 26 at Pattaya Country Club with a tee time of 0900. Sign-up sheets are at the Diana Green Bottle 2nd road and the Diana Driving range.

Been there, done that - Masa

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

The Pattaya Golf Society visited the Emerald club in Ban Chang on Tuesday July 27 for the second stableford competition in four days - and why not? The course is in excellent condition and even on this public holiday, it was empty!

It was no surprise that the group’s largest field for a month or more turned out, augmented by the return of old friends Tony Thorne and John Mason, the latter desperate for some tropical golf after a long spell in the UK. The only difference from the previous visit was the weather which was heavily overcast and brooding and the storm arrived inexorably after about seven holes to delay proceedings for an hour.

On the restart it became obvious that the man of the moment on the previous visit would dominate this time as Masanori Takano was racking up par after par to turn at one under. On Saturday he fell apart after sixteen holes but held on to his lead and again this day he incredibly played the wrong ball on the seventeenth and, needing only a par for a sub-par round, he stumbled again on the final hole. It was “d้jเ-vu” with a vengeance. His card of 35 points was still enough to win as his nearest rivals, Tony Thorne, John Rehm and guest Laurie Collins all shared second place with 32 points.

There were no official birdie ‘2’s but Scott Reilly, playing to establish a handicap, received the Booby Bevy for his birdie on the par-three seventh with the words, “You have to be in it to win it” ringing in his ears at the presentation.

For the Soi Buakhao based group it had been a fine day’s golf at the Emerald but for Masa it was definitely a case of “Been there, done that...”

...and Bangpra makes it three

The Masanori Roadshow, aka the Pattaya Golf Society, visited Bangpra on Thursday, July 29 to play a stableford competition on the beautifully appointed course. The fairways had a surprising amount of “run” and the greens were deliciously quick. An absence of other golfers and a warm, breezy day made for some excellent golf.

It was appropriate that on this Japanese owned course the Japanese would feature prominently in the frame as Kasuo Takimoto took third place with 32 points, just behind Tony Thorne’s 34 points in second place. The winner was Masanori Takano again, making it his third consecutive victory and this time he held it all together to finish under par with 37 points.

Bob St Aubin woke the many monkeys with his cheer on the second after securing a birdie ‘2’ and Tony Thorne joined him with another excellent birdie effort on hole twelve.

The Booby Bevy went to Peter Masters who chose to practice before hand and get the dreaded “unmentionables” out of his game but only succeeded in sharpening the particular beasts, leading to another tormented round.

Bangpra had seen another fine exhibition of accuracy from the talented Japanese golfer and Masa now stands within touching distance of his first “Player of the Month” title with the PGS.

The Boss in charge at Eastern Star

The PGS visited Eastern Star On Saturday, July 31, to play their last stableford competition for the month, on a day which stayed fair throughout. Eastern Star greens are a real worry and many in the group had never seen them as poorly presented as on this occasion. Very dry with bare patches and sprinklings of sand added to their inconsistency and when every approach shot kicks up dust there are huge problems. The club will suffer in the long run as golfers are becoming more selective in their choice of venue during this economic downturn and ESR comes nowhere near offering value for money these days.

Having said that, the group made a fist of it and Erik Anttonen, back after a broken toe, shot the best gross of the day (83) in collecting 33 points for third place. Sharing second place were the consistent John Rehm and Mikael Andersson, both collecting 34 points, but the winner was Len Jones and his 38 points represented his most solid round for a few months.

There were no birdie ‘2’s and in an intriguing sub-plot Masanori Takano held his nerve at the death to snatch the Society’s “Player of the Month” award from Wichai Tananusorn, by virtue of two wins earlier in the week.

The Booby Bevy went to new member Mike Wilsher by way of a welcome to the IPGC and as a reminder of a pleasant but low scoring debut before his hasty departure back to “Nakhon Nowhere” for the next few months. Maybe that’s where the ESR ground staff team have been hiding!

Bernie cleans up at Emerald

The Ban Chang Golf Society

It was a quiet week again which meant that we only had 2 groups going out at Emerald Golf Course.

Bernie, 2nd right, celebrates his win with the staff at Mama’s Bar.

With the course looking deserted we got off 15 minutes early with everyone concentrating hard on the first hole due to the 6 skin rollover from last week. John Mc. drew first blood with a par for 3 points but following up in the second group Bernie took the hole with 4 points. He then continued his good playing for the whole round, finishing with 35 points for the win.

There was another first this week as the nearest the pin prize was rolled over which has never happened since the formation of our small society.

Other skin winners this weeks were as follows: Bernie (7), John Mc (5), Harry V (2),Martyn (1), Broken Wing (1) and finally JJ (1). Everyone came away with a win of some description except for Bob G who proceeded to drown his sorrows with a few cold ones at Mama’s Bar (along with the rest of us) afterwards.

Café Kronborg extend their lead

Pattaya Sports Club Bowling League

Kran Nielson bowled a 213 (high score of the day) in the final game as Café Kronborg remains in first place with a four point drubbing of Sabai Friday. However, her individual performance was overshadowed by Green Tree’s own Tue Pettae who rolled back to back 200’s; 201 and 210 respectively in games two and three posting the high scratch series of the week (574) in their match with USMC.

200 Bowlers: Tue, Kran & Ooy.

VFW Post 9876 remains in second place with a three to one win over Bavaria.

The final 200+ game of the week was rolled by Ooy Pluemkamon who rolled a 202 in the final game to help Jack Tar sweep four points from Canada and make a major jump from seventh place to third place in the weekly standings.

House of the Golden Coin also climbed in the standings, moving up two places from sixth to fourth place with a four game sweep of Brother D.
