PSC Charity Classic raises over 400,000 baht for local charities

PSC Charity Classic Golf Tournament 2010

Derek Brook
This is a competition that is different from all others in the PSC calendar and as such I will treat the report in that manner. While the results are of course important, of much more importance is the concept of the day, as it is now and as it has always been, that is to raise money for charity. This is totally a Golf Chairman Section initiative and as such the PSC Golf Section arrange to ensure a fine day is ended with a substantial amount going to worthy causes. This year the intended main charity was to be The Blind School, with The CPDC also coming in for a share.

The winning team of Harvey Samuel and Mike Murphy collect their trophies from PSC Golf & Charity Chairman William Macey, center.

In advance, the Golf Chairman, William Macey, and his team were beavering away, twisting arms and doing all they could to make the day profitable. It is only right here at the beginning, before we get into the result part, to thank all those who gave generously of their time and from their pockets. This of course also included all the players who were told that some of their fee would go to a good cause. However, the under mentioned must be individually thanked.

Charity Classic runners up, Paul Smith and Colin Greig.

Major sponsors were Sea Drill, Jackalope, PSC and also PSC Golf. Into a major sponsor I must also thank, and make, Sinto who provided a large number of shirts free. Also supporting the cause were T.Q., Jesters, Y.W.C.A., Trattatoria, Shenanigans, Jameson’s, Diana Group 1982, Smiles Property ( Elephant), and Condoman. Here I must also thank Green Valley for their help without which the day would have been more difficult.

At the end of the day it is estimated that over 400,000 baht will go to the charities named and also a few minor sums to other worthy causes. A fine effort from the Golf Section and their team. Very well done!

PSC Golf & Charity Chairman William Macey, left, and Social Chairman Mike Gerrard, right, add some order to the proceedings.

Onto the golf, and the course was to be Green Valley, the format a 2 Man Scramble and the start a shotgun for the 120 or so players on Friday, March 12. I say the start because before we got to that Max and Matt, the terrible twosome, had been beavering away for days sorting out the teams, the system and Uncle Tom Cobley and all. This is a really major task and all who saw them in the Golf Office for days and at the booking-in realise the work that goes into it. Even giving everyone a shirt and keeping track is a big job, so well done to Max and his team.

Mod Churaiska and Amphun North took seventh place for the ladies

The course on the day was in fine condition but a strong wind made the golf difficult. The tees were generally well back so this made the course play difficult, but the fairways were well grassed and the greens fast and tricky. With this number of players the speed of play was a bit on the slow side but at about 5ฝ hours not unexpected. Most holes had something to go for so you had to be awake to a chance of a special prize.

Round over it was back to a packed changing room, this was a shotgun start, however this clubhouse is well endowed with showers and it was soon out into the restaurant area where Max and his team were slaving away sorting out the results. Then back to Pattaya to prepare for the evening.

Third placed Eddie Bielby and Peter Lenoury receive their prizes from Golf Chairman William Macey, center.

The presentation and the buffet were at the Diana Resort where all could relax around the pool while they enjoyed the fine buffet. On this night the Diana Resort delighted the persons present with having what can only be called ‘A Happy Night’ on the drinks. Much appreciated in this cash strapped world. Then the presentations began.

Our Emcee, the one and only Mike Gerrard, started the night off by having an early ‘Lucky Draw Part 1’ then it was onto the technical prizes. To save time here I will list them at the end. Then it was into the winners and on this night there were seven Team Prizes as this was a ‘Two Person Team Scramble’. I say person because of course the Ladies were in the prizes and in fact the team in seventh consisted of Mod Churaiska and Amphun North with a fine net 68 on count back from Dave Dolle and Don Carmody.

Fourth placed team, Bengt Borg and Roger Stromberg.

In sixth was the team of Simon Dutton and Phil Cawse with a net 67.2, of course they did win vouchers for Shenanigans. One place better in fifth was the team of Morten Moores and Phil Battah with a net 66.8 and it continued to be tight.

The team of Bengt Borg and Roger Stromberg took fourth place with a net 66.6, losing third place on count back to Eddie Bielby and Peter Lenoury.

So to the runners up, and with a net 65.8, a very fine score, coming in second was the experienced team of Paul Smith and Colin Greig.

Morten Moores and Phil Battah receive their prizes for finishing in fifth place.

Now to the winners and with a super score of net 64.6 and the Charity Classic champions for 2010 were Harvey Samuel and Mike Murphy. Well done indeed and to top the night Mike, who was on holiday, returned his golf bag prize to be used towards increasing the charity total. A fine gesture.

Presentations over, Mike did the second part of the Lucky Draw, then all were able to sit around the pool and pass the night enjoying the ‘Happy Night’ prices. A fine day and only good can come of it. T.T.F.N.

Long Drives: Morten Moores, Geoff King, Rick Bevington, Paul Kraft, Mod Churaiska

Near Pins: Andy Dyson, Larry Bland, Peter Lenoren, Gorden Melia, Elias Magnusson, Mike Pledger, Bengt Borg, Derek Brook, Harvey Samuel, Mike Corner, Pete Bevis, Bob Watson, Matt Anderson, Carole Kubicki, Noi Saprakhon

Special Technical Prizes: Geoff Wright, Don James, Andy Pilling, Pierre Wilkes, Paula Byrne, Rolf Bjorgum, Jeff North, Oddur Olafson, Richard Hurley, Andy Pilling, Bob Watson, Jeff Wright, Roger Stromstedt.

Max keeps watch over the prizes.

Thailand’s Keerati and Malaysia’s Romzi scoop Laser honours at Pattaya Ch’ship

Peter Cummins
Thai Laser national champion, Keerati Bualong reigned supreme in the Laser Standard Rig, while Malaysian sailor Muhamad Mohd Romzi did likewise in the smaller Laser Radial Rig, in the concurrent championships sailed off the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, in South Pattaya last week.

As the winds returned and the 2010 Asia Pacific Laser and Laser Masters Championships finished off the Royal Varuna Yacht Club in South Pattaya, the last day’s racing resembled, what one sailor called a “roller-coaster” ride: the Monsoon blew in at around 20-knots and huge waves had the fleet “rocking and rolling”. “It was superb,” Hans Luther noted.

Consistent Sattahip sailor Keerati Bualong, consolidating his recent win as Laser Champion of Thailand and a first placing in the 2009 Laser Radial Youth World Championships in Japan, was unassailable as the first of the 31-strong fleet in the Laser Standard Rig Division.

Keerati had five first placings and three seconds for a total of 11 penalty points in the eight races counted out of the 10 sailed. But he had to fight hard fought hard to keep in front of neighbour, Malaysian Hairudin Harrithammry (20) in second, ahead of the strong team of compatriots, Mod Afendy Khairulnizam (22) and Nik Azizam Nik Ashraf Qaedi, (29), third and fourth, respectively.

Equally-consistent Aussie sailor, Colin Dibb (32) was fifth, well ahead of Thai Veerasit Puangnak (53), sixth. Meanwhile Royal Varuna sailor Gareth Owen (68) was seventh, ahead of Aussie Stefan Kurys-romer (74).

In the 43-entry fleet of the slightly smaller Laser Radial Rig - which suited some of the “older sailors” - again the Malaysians were in the vanguard: Muhamad Mohd Romzi, with seven first placings and a third, in the eight races counted out of 10 sailed, accumulated 10 penalty points, easily beating sailors from four other countries, comprising the first 10 placings.

Following the Malaysian, at the end of the racing, were, in order: Natthawut Paenyaem (Thai,, 16 points), Keith Wilkiins (UK, 36), ), Nattawut Vongrak (Thai, 43), Peter Seidenberg (USA, 48),Tada Momoko (Japan – and first female, 55 points), Richard Major (UK, 69), Michael Kinnear (UK, 77), Amirah Hamid Nur (Malaysia – second female, 79), and Chanyim Kamolwas (Thai and first Thai female), and New Zealander Michael Shields, fractionally ahead of first Thai lady Chanyim Kamolwan.

As the International Laser Association, the world-wide body for competition in this single-handed class, there were several other categories decided simultaneously: The Open, (Age 35 – 44); the Masters (45 – 54), and the Grand Masters (55 plus). There is even a Great Grand Masters category for men and women – though not too many women opt for this age group.

Briefly, Japan’s Tada Momoko was first lady in the Radial Open, Jennie King (UK) and Marijke Whitcraft (Thai) were the leading ladies in the Radial Women’s Masters, Aussie Colin Dibb won the Open Standard Rig Masters, while UK’s Keith Wilkins was the Great Grand Master in the Open Radial, with UK’s Hilary Thomas bravely asserting her rank among the “old boys”, to finish 10th in that division.

The Laser, sailed in some 100 countries world-wide, was the brain-child of a former yachting journalist, Canadian Bruce Kirby, launched in 1971. What a transformation - from a yachting correspondent to a designer of probably the world’s most popular dinghy. I feel there is some hope for me, yet!

Now that the highly successful 2010 Asia Pacific Laser and Laser Masters Championships are over, the Royal Varuna Yacht Club is gearing up for the 2010 World Laser 4.7 Youth Championship. This will be contested from 31 March to 8 April when some 120 young (under 18 year-old) sailors from 25 countries will join host country sailors for the event.

The clear winner of these events is Thailand – and, specifically Pattaya – through the enormous amount of positive media coverage world-wide.

Sports Bag

Dear Editor,
I would like to take this opportunity to reply to the letter by Barry Hooper in Sports Bag, March 12.

In my capacity as the Chairman of the IPGC, fully supported by the IPGC Committee, I make the following points:

- The IPGC support the aim to integrate Golfing Groups within the Pattaya area under a common banner in order to enhance the golfing experience.

- The achievement of this aim would increase the negotiating power of the integrated Groups.

- The IPGC wish to see the introduction of a properly negotiated pricing structure and are already working in tandem with the courses. There is little point in attempting to drive prices down to a level where the facility risks becoming unsustainable.

If you wish to march to this drum, please contact me on Mobile 084 735 9278.
Yours Sincerely,
Chris Knapp

Chonburi teams win shootout at Airsoft competition

The victorious Vios Chonburi A and B teams pose with their trophies.

Vimolrat Singnikorn
Two Chonburi teams topped the list of winners at the Action Shooting Technical Game preliminaries that selected five of eight teams that will represent eastern Thailand at the national BB-gun championships later this month.

The Vios Chonburi A and B teams took the top two slots in the March 7 shootout at the Combat and Technical BB Gun Field where eight teams dueled to see who could earn top scores in the Airsoft shooting contest. The five top finishers will join three other teams to be selected later to represent the Eastern Seaboard at the March 27 nationals in Bangkok.

Thirty teams originally started in the competition, which mimic war games with participants decked out in fatigues and using replica M-16s and other military guns that shoot 6mm plastic Airsoft rounds instead of the traditional and potentially dangerous BB birdshot. Winners were based on accuracy scores and victory in the classic “Capture the Flag” game.

Chonburi A and B won respectively the honorary cup from Deputy Prime Minister Maj. Gen. Sanan Kajornprasart and the 10,000 baht prize, and the Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome Cup and 5,000 baht.

The Desert Scorpion Team came in third, winning the other mayor’s cup and a 3,000 baht prize, while the J.R.Y. team from Pakan Field took the Combat Magazine trophy and 2,000 baht. Finally, four teams; F-1 Pattaya, Battleway, A&B (A team) and R&T shared the Best ASTG Sportsman award from the Eastern Sports Development ASTG Centre.

Poottida pockets another win

PSC golf from The Three Sisters Bar

Only sixteen players challenged the potential rain that never came … well it did spit just a bit. The clouds and cool breeze made for a really delightful 18 holes at the Pattaya Country Club this 10th of March. Someone may have left the sprinklers on all night though as the fairways were a bit soaked in places, but otherwise the course was just fine. Bunkers were a bit hard.

Wednesday winners Poottida Murphy, left, with Bob Benda.

Back at Caddy Shack II just down Old Siam road, the usual snacks were on hand as well as spicy and cheesy-dogs provided by Herbie. The cards were checked and the game, or lack thereof, discussed. Coming out on top once again was Poottida Murphy off her handicap of 25 who roared in with 38 points. Just one point behind Poottida was Bob Benda with a respectable 37 points and right behind Bob were Piranan Phanchai and Dale Murphy, both carding a 36’s.

It’s hard to see the great ones fall but one gentleman, who only weeks ago carded a 41, came in today with a 19. Could it be because he could not see well until the 8th hole?

A good time was had by all. Come on out, beat the heat and join us at our early tee off at 6:30 a.m.

Joy for Jimmy Cloy

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

The Pattaya Golf Society made its final weekend visit of the high season to Rayong C.C. on Sunday, March 7, for a stableford competition. Every week improvements are being made here and on this occasion it was discovered that the greens had been shaved, leaving some brown bare patches but thankfully the greenkeeper had found some grass on which to site the holes. Putting was not therefore the problem it might have been and for the first time in a long while scores were very good, the average being 30 points per player.

The two flights were cut at fifteen and under an in the second flight Masaaki Sugaya took third with 32 points whilst the Rabbi once more made second place his own with 34, but again losing his touch over the final four holes. The Elephant Bar “boss” is desperate to descend the handicap lists but he must first break par to realise his ambition. The flight winner, with his second consecutive sub-par round, was Mr. Len whose 37 points saw a consistency hitherto lacking in his game.

In the top flight Tore Eliassen and Bob St Aubin shared third pace with 34 points each whilst Peter Masters shook himself free of the sinister golfer’s albatross on his back for the last few months and produced a very welcome 36 points for second place. The best round of the day was recorded by Jimmy Cloy and his comments on achieving 41 points were along the lines of “I don’t know how I managed that!” The thirteen-handicapper certainly has the tools in his locker and made good use of them on the day.

There were no birdie ‘2’s, making for a healthy prize fund and the Booby Bevy was held in reserve until the certain candidate appeared at the next presentation.

High season at Rayong was successful and the PGS would like to go on record and thank the management and staff for doing all in their power to act as the perfect hosts. Occasionally it went awry but all courses are capable of that. On to Eastern Star on Saturdays from this weekend on.

Wellings and Cooper assault Lakeside

After an absence of a few months the Pattaya Golf Society visited Royal Lakeside to play a medal competition on Tuesday, March 9 on the generally forgiving course. After a few weeks labouring on slower greens it was a change to find greens which were not only very consistent and receptive but also deliciously pacey. The fairways were well tended and all round the course was beautifully presented.

The large field was divided into two flights at twelve and under, an indication of the quality of the field, and good scores were commonplace by the end of the day. In the second flight there was nothing to choose between Alan Hanlon, Richard Dobson and a returning Tim Lazecki as they all shared top spot with net 68.

In the top flight Allan Pilkington fired net 69 for third place whilst Mark Cooper’s net 67 could only match the round of Barry Wellings who shot a gross 72, giving him a share of the win after his handicap of five had been deducted.

Barry also had two birdie ‘2’s and joined Mark Cooper, Jimmy Cloy and Steven Lewis in a share of the ‘2’s pot. The Booby Bevy went to Masaashi Sugaya after his ten shot attempt to escape a greenside bunker on the fifteenth was followed by three putts.

Royal Lakeside Golf Club has certainly taken over the mantle of Phoenix of old where one’s game could be revitalised after a round on the forgiving course. The full field average was net 75 on another successful day with the PGS.

Milner in sparkling form at Crystal Bay

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Monday, March 8, Burapha - Stableford

There were 72 golfers today as we were joined by the TIAC boys from Aussie, who had been practising with us all week and whose four day tournament proper, started today. We played the A & B nines off the blue tees, but for some, the white tees were in the order of the day, even though they started on the blues and they were subsequently, ‘DQ’d.

John Lawton plays out of a bunker at the private
short hole course on Saturday as Capt’ Bob looks on.

There appeared to be less players around than of late with noticeably fewer cars in the car park, indicating perhaps the end of the high season is nigh.

The course was in its usual great condition however the scores were somewhat lower than usual but all had a good time in what was a fairly quick round.

Louis Doyon, a newbie to the Outback, won Div A with 35 points from ‘moi’ (Bob), now playing off a friendly 8 H/cap, ahead of Mo Sadiq back in third on the same score.

Alan Pilkington took Div B with 37 points but the top scores of the day both came in Div C, with both El Suggs and Peter Stonebridge amassing 39 points apiece. Div D was a lower scoring affair, with one of the Aussie visitors and Chiang Mai hopefuls, Pat Lamont (33pts) prevailing over regular Outbackers, Sakorn (33pts) and Ivan Plunkett with 32 points.

Back at the Outback there was a bit of banter from all the Aussie boys, or should I say between them, as they are from all different states; also there is a Pro Am coming up at Burapha and Mike the GM came out to give an invitation to the Outback to enter a couple of teams, there will be more of this on our web site when details come to hand as in dates times etc.

There were just two ‘2’s coming from Bruce Milner and Mo Sadiq
Div A (0-11)
1st Louis Doyon (11) 35pts
2nd Bob Philp (8) 33pts
3rd Mohammed Sadiq (8) 33pts
Div B (12-14)
1st Alan Pilkington (12) 37pts
2nd Chris Davisson (14) 36pts
3rd Steven Budrys (13) 35pts
Div C (15-18)
1st Eldridge Suggs (17) 39pts
2nd Peter Stonebridge (16) 39pts
3rd Steve Plant (15) 38pts
Div D (19+)
1st Pat Lamont (24) 33pts
2nd Sakorn Pramoolchart (25) 33pts
3rd Ivan Plunkett (20) 32pts

Tuesday, March 9, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford

An additional tee time was required to accommodate the 28 Outbackers who made the decision to have a hit at this local course where it’s not a bad rate and a buggy can be shared at a reasonable cost. There were usual ‘regulars’ who today were joined by five of the Aussie boys as they prepare for the Outback’s Chiang Mai trip on Sunday.

We were away on time and although it was fairly busy it was about a four hour round on a course that was being watered as we played, although more often the rough than the fairway and it was noticeable that the bunkers had received attention.

A couple of guys out there were a little impetuous to tee off before the group in front had properly left the green, the flying golf ball can be a dangerous object; please ensure the area is clear before taking a shot.

Last week John Stafford was late in handing in what turned out to be a winning score – today he did not hand in his card at all, we can only suppose that this week John, it wasn’t any good – but we can’t wait forever. To make life easier for everybody, please hand your card in after your round or to somebody else to hand in for you.

There were two 38’s at the top of Division ‘A’ from Aussie, Rod Crosswell (14) and the ‘Stunning’ John Lawton (19), with Rod getting first place on count back. In third and fourth were General Jack Moseley (10) and the other Lawton – Suzi, both with 36 points and again the ‘Lawton’ lost the count back.

In top place today in Division ‘B’, with the ‘best of the day’, was PCC member and regular Outbacker Nigel Cannon (23) with 40 points! Second was JingJo O’Neill (33) with 36. Count back again sorted out third and fourth with both Geoff Moodie (27) and Alan Pearce (22) having 35 points but Geoff had the better back 9.

There were four ‘2’s from Suzi, Jack, Rod Crosswell and JingJo.

We heard some news this week that a good friend of the Outback – Joachim Oestreicher – had had a serious motorcycle accident caused by a pot-hole. He landed in the road in an unconscious state! With him was his 4 year old son who stood in the middle of the road waving down cars and asking them to help his Daddy. Local resident, Harvey Samuel was just passing and took control of the situation. All Outbackers wish Joachim a speedy recovery.

Div A (0-20)
1st Rod Crosswell (14) 38pts
2nd John Lawton (19) 38pts
3rd Jack Moseley (10) 36pts
4th Suzi Lawton (17) 36pts
Div B (21+)
1st Nigel Cannon (23) 40pts
2nd Martin O’Neill (33) 36pts
3rd Geoff Moodie (27) 35pts
4th Alan Pearce (22) 35pts

Wednesday, March 10, Crystal Bay – Stableford

Stunnin’ John Lawton celebrated his birthday in style, kicking off the day with complimentary bucks fizz and bacon butties for his fellow Outbackers prior to leaving for Crystal Bay.

Leading up to this big event had been a quieter practise day behind closed doors at a very private course that held its first tournament last Saturday, just a short distance away from the Outback. Capt’ Bob & Stunnin’ John were in a play off for last place in a day that was won by JingJo O’Neill with a net 25 on this par 27 course that included a quite spectacular, hole-in-one.

Anyhow, back to Crystal Bay and Happy Birthday mate, sorry you couldn’t win your own Birthday Cup despite your secret practising.

Forty-nine Outbackers went out on the B & A loops at Crystal Bay and they (the management) were happy to see such a large contingent on again a much quieter day than of late. It is still a great track although a little tatty round the edges but the greens were slick and the generous fairways made way for some excellent scoring, particularly in the first division (0–15) where nobody scored less than 31 points – that’s pretty good stuff!

Bruce Milner came out of that division to win the Outbacker B’day Cup with a spectacular 40 points, leaving Chris Sheehan to win Div A with 39, ahead of Capt’ Bob on 38.

John’s other half, Suzi, played well for her 36 points, never missing a fairway off the tee, but her putting let her down and she just missed out on a podium finish. Two 39’s and two 38’s filled all the places in Div B, headed by Raleigh Gosney and Chris Dopp.

The four near pins were won by Stunnin’ John (B4), Chris Sheehan (B6), Sakorn (A5) and Paul Smets (A8); John’s was subsequently re-entered into a lucky draw to be won by John Snow.

There were seven ‘2’s from Bruce Milner, Chris Sheehan, Paul Smets, John Sarcasmo, Vic Barton, Kathy Doody and Mick Abbott.

Back at the new Outback ranch, the celebrations continued as John treated all to the wonderful Outback fish pie and spag bolognaise as well as an assortment of Thai dishes. Thanks for a great day.

Friday, March 12, Khao Kheow - Stableford

There was better scoring today than has been seen in the past few weeks from the 41 Outbackers who played the B & C loops of this Pete Dye course, from the yellow tees. The guys still couldn’t beat the ladies though as Suzi Lawton, playing off 15, took Div B with an excellent 40 points, two ahead of Bruce Milner who won at Crystal Bay on Wednesday. These two are both off tomorrow (Sunday) to play in the Chiang Mai Challenge and most fancy their chances.

Tom Fitzpatrick in Div A got the better of Capt’ Bob on count back, both with 37 points, ahead of three guys all with 35: Tony Garnett got the nod over Paul and Ian who could not be separated right down to the last hole.

Div C went to the another lady, the lovely Jum, who, also playing off two lower than her actual handicap, scored 33 points to oust big Kev Hamilton into second place, also with 33.

There were seven ‘2’s from Tony Garnett, Suzi, Bob St Aubin, Bob Philp, Owen Lloyd, Bruce McAdam and Steve Budrys.

All are welcome to come and join us for a beer and a hit. Just call in and put your name down on the list or give Bob a call on 087 941 2474.

The Challenge Jug stays at home

IPGC golf from The Haven

Monday, March 8, Khao Kheow - Stableford

Division 1 (0-12)
1st Rodney Hayes (9) 36pts
2nd Martin Grimoldby (6) 35pts
3rd Barry Wellings (5) 35pts
4th Marc Jensen (8) 35pts
5th Peter Skinner (11) 35pts
Division 2 (13+)
1st Yasuo Suzuki (13) 38pts
2nd Dave Spendley (24) 33pts
3rd Evan Millar (23) 33pts
4th Richard Dobson (18) 32pts
5th Shuichi Kodaka (19) 32pts

With fifteen single figure handicappers in the field, it was a very low cut for the divisions with the line being made at 12 and below for the first division.

Rodney Hayes, having returned after a short visit to Sydney, took up where he left off before his departure from Thailand with a win, albeit by the slimmest of margins, over Martin Grimoldby who was preparing to leave Pattaya to return to the UK and just failed to add a win to his previous podium placings. Martin had to be content with second spot on a count back over Barry Wellings with a better 14 to 13 on the last six after tying at 18 a piece for the nine. Marc Jensen slipped into fourth with a better count back of 17 to 16 ahead of Peter Skinner.

The second division was a one horse race with Yasuo Suzuki once again scoring well and taking the top spot by five points from Dave Spendley, who in turn just saw off the challenge of Evan Millar, winning a count back by 18 to 16. Richard Dobson just got the nod ahead of Shuich1 Kodaka for fourth by a margin of 14 to 12 over the back nine.

The 2’s pool in the first division was shared between Stuart Thompson, Marc Jensen, Gary Constable, Barry Wellings and Tony Barritt, while the second divisions’ huge roll over was shared by Evan Millar and Danny Greer.

Before presenting the prizes The Doc welcomed back Simon Payne, Gary Constable, Rodney Hayes, Phil Mitchell, Dan Stiff, Jonathon Hook, Jack Perkins and Mike Contoni.

Wednesday, March 10, The Emerald - Stableford

Division 1 (0-14)
1st Kevin Townsend (11) 43pts
2nd Erik Donnestad (4) 39pts
3dr Brian Libbey (10) 36pts
4th Russell Exley (8) 35pts
5th Yasuo Suzuki (13) 34pts
Division 2 (15+)
1st Shuichi Kodaka (19) 38pts
2nd Brian Kelly (37) 37pts
3rd Chris Knapp (16) 33pts
4th Stephen Lewis (20) 33pts
5th Steve Longtin (15) 33pts

Once again two divisions were needed, but with a different balance to the competitors the cut line for the divisions came at 14 and below for the first division. This was led in by Kevin Townsend, who had a great day’s golf with everything going his way as he returned a terrific seven under score to leave Erik Donnestad, who had a gross 73, in second place four points adrift and a little shell shocked.

Brian Libbey continued to impress off his new, two shot lower handicap as he took third place with a level handicap par score. Russell Exley took fourth ahead of the count back struggle between Yasuo Suzuki and Julie Donnestad which the former won by a margin of 18 to 17.

The second division was a tighter result with Shuichi Kodaka taking the top place by one from Brian Kelly. Chris Knapp won a three-way count back with Stephen Lewis in fourth and Steve Longtin in fifth with a better 14 to 13 on the back six after Steve had been dropped off with only 14 over the inward half, against 17 by Chris and Stephen.

Very surprisingly with once again several single figure handicappers playing, nine in fact, there were no 2’s in the first division but just as surprisingly in the smaller second division there were two, one each by Brian Kelly and Mike Sanders.

The Thailand
Challenge Jug

Alongside the main competition on Wednesday, the team from South Herts Golf Club in North London were making their third attempt to lay their hands on the Thailand Challenge Jug. Once again they came up just short losing for the third time by the same score of 5 matches to 3.

With all the players playing in the Stableford competition and everyone wanting to play matchplay, it was decided that there would be no conceded holes in all the matches.

The Haven team was led once again by Russell Exley, who led off the match by winning 2 &1 over Jim Slattery. Playing in the same group Rodney Hayes went down to Peter Skinner by 2 holes, leaving the match halved at that point.

The second group saw Tony Barritt win 2 up over South Herts team Captain, Bob Heath, while Gerald Decio won for South Herts by the same margin over Trevor Schirmer to keep the match all square at 2-all after four matches.

Next up for The Haven was the formidable pairing of Chris Knapp and Brian Kelly who duly obliged for their captain, winning both matches against George Oakley and Bruce Horn with results of 4 & 3 and 6 & 5 respectively, which left the South Herts team needing to win both the final matches to halve.

Turning out after an extended hiatus, Stephen Beard just failed to hang on to Mike Flynn, losing 3 & 1, but B.J. Smith had already wrapped it up for The Haven with a strong 6 & 4 result over Jimmy Norris.

So once again The Haven retained the Jug for the third time against the team that had played the inaugural match for the Jug in 2008 and remain unbeaten against all comers.

Australia take 16th Pattaya Am-Am

The winners of the 16 th Pattaya Am-Am tournament,
Wayne Waywood, Don Everett, Bob Maloney and Norm Cheetham.

Friday, March 12, Eastern Star G.C.

The 16th Pattaya Am-Am was played this year over the well presented Eastern Star course designed by Robert Trent Jones, and although the greens were not quite as fast as they could have been it still provided a very good and fair test of golf.

The playing conditions helped to ensure an extremely competitive result, with the winners returning a twelve under score that was two less than last year’s winners achieved, but it needed a count back to decide the final victors with the third team just one behind at eleven under and fourth place being secured with a ten under score.

The Am-Am is played under the same format as a Pro-Am but with all of the team being amateurs. The objective is for the best two player’s scores to count on each hole with this year the competition being played using the Stableford scoring system, to give an aggregate against a par of 72.

The maximum handicap allowed was three quarters with a maximum allowance for each player of twenty one shots off a twenty eight handicap.

The weather conditions on the day were clear skies with some wind which helped to keep the heat in check but still plenty of water was required to stay hydrated and those teams that substituted beer for water, unfortunately suffered in the final scoring. The overall standard was higher this year with over 75% equaling or bettering par although everyone enjoyed the chance to play in a major competition without the usual pressures and with the benefit of the camaraderie of the team format.

As the Jomtiem Golf group had given up their usual Friday tee times for the benefit of the competition and the course management allocating a two tee start, things got away to a quick start with Glyn Evans, Chris Knapp and Russell Exley acting as starters after the contestants had been quickly and smoothly processed through registration. The rounds progressed at a pace with the first groups finishing in just over 4 hours and the last groups off the course by 3.30 pm, which was a remarkable achievement for this format and an almost full compliment of teams.

The winning team was led by Wayne Waywood playing off (11) who appeared on the card 11 times, with the rest of the team comprised of Don Everett (20), Bob Maloney (9), and Norm Cheetham (13) all contributing equally in amassing 84 points with an outstanding count back of 46 points with Wayne chipping in on the last for a net eagle for four points.

The second placed team made up by Steve Mascari (2), Phil Mitchell (5), Joe McArdle (9) and Tom Byrne (10) also scored 12 under with Phil leading the scoring and the other lads contributing equally, but there should be a special mention for Tom who also chipped in on the 18th for a net eagle but this only secured second with a count back of 42 following a matching outward half.

Third place went to the team of Chris Voller (5), Jeremy Masse (8), Barry Traynor (9) and Mikael Andersson (9) just a shot back on eleven under with Mikael and Chris just leading the scoring and the former slipping in six three-pointers, with the main thrust coming over the closing nine holes with 46 points it still proved not quite enough to make up for the slow starting nine where they could only manage one under.

The fourth team made a very creditable effort to get to the top of the list, finishing a further shot back at ten under. After going out in 42 they slipped slightly to a 40, with Dave Thomas (4) and Bob Lamond (5) providing the lion’s share of the points, but they were well supported by Stuart Thompson (7) and Evan Millar (17). The highlight of their round came at the very first hole when they walked off the green have totaled 7 points following a net eagle from Bob and a net birdie from Dave but they were unable to keep up the pressure right to the end.

Near Pin prizes went to Al Keith, Bob Lamond, Dave Thomas and Mikael Andersson.

After last year’s break with tradition, the prize giving and buffet were once again held at The Haven where the usual sumptuous array of food was provided by Lamyai and her staff and allied to the special promotion offered on draft Tetley’s Smooth and Stowford Press cider, ensured that the night got off to a great start and kept going well after the winners had been photographed.

With the early finish on the course, the proceedings got off right on time at 6.30 p.m. having allowed for plenty of time for the contestants to stop at a few watering holes to exchange stories of the day’s play.

Stephen Beard thanked the various venue organisers in the form of Len Jones, Steve Mascari and Glyn Evans and Russell Exley for the pre-tournament promotion, the starters and the catering staff and also gave a special grateful thanks to Russell Exley for almost single handedly setting up the whole day and providing such a well organised competition.

He then invited Russell to present the prizes, following which the winning team captain, Bob Maloney, thanked the organisers and the rest of the contenders for letting them take the top prizes back to the Gosnells Golf Club in Perth, Western Australia.

We traveled to the testing Khao Kheow course on Thursday which we found to be in very good condition. We played the B and C nines and whilst the greens on the B layout were fast and true, the C greens had all been sanded.

We had only one flight which meant it would be tight for the prizes and in first place was Steve Durey (19) with 32 points ahead of Tony Chetland (18) 31 points and Ken Hole (15) with the same score but losing out to Tony on count back.

The near pins were spread between Ian Hart Ken Hole and Steve Durey, while one near pin not won (200 baht) goes into the fund for the Banglamung boys home.

Carole continues rich vein of form

PSC Golf from the Café Kronborg

Peter Blackburn

Monday, March 8, Royal Lakeside - Stableford

It’s apparent that some of our golfing friends have headed back to Europe and other parts of the planet as our numbers are beginning to decline somewhat, but we still had a good turnout of 34 who met at Café Kronborg on Monday, including newcomer Hakan Nilsson from Sweden and the returning Ronnie Ratti on R & R from Korea.

‘The Admiral’ Dave Richardson, left, with Monday’s winners Carole Kubicki & Ted Morris.

Although Royal Lakeside is a 70 minute drive from Pattaya we knew that it was well worth the extra time to play this ever superb course and as usual we weren’t disappointed. Arriving just before 0930 we were invited to the first tee at our leisure and although we were unable to utilize two tees, our first group hit off five minutes ahead of schedule at 0955.

It was hot of course but the stiff breeze, although affecting some shots helped to cool things down somewhat on this beautifully prepared golf course. The greens were in excellent condition and all in all scoring was reasonably easy, particularly in A Flight. No delays at all except for three stops for drinks saw us complete our round in the very good time of four hours and ten minutes.

Veteran Ted Morris had an absolute day out and his 43 points was easily enough to win A Flight, with another fine score of 40 points from Richard Kubicki only enough to gain him second place. Paul Avery finished third with Niels Hanson in fourth place. A count back saw another veteran Don Richardson edge out Mike “Hunter” Gosden for fifth.

Replicating her husband Richard’s score of 40 points, Carole Kubicki won the B Flight with Alan Ewing second and Leif Kirkgaard third. Ulla Ravn finished fourth just ahead of Jan Lovgreen in fifth place.

The “Compass Award” was won by Graham Buckingham.
A Flight
1st Ted Morris (9) 43pts
2nd Richard Kubicki (12) 40pts
3rd Paul Avery (11) 39pts
4th Niels Hanson (15) 36pts
5th Don Richardson (10) 35pts
B Flight
1st Carole Kubicki (28) 40pts
2nd Alan Ewing (23) 37pts
3rd Leif Kirkgaard (20) 36pts
4th Ulla Ravn (38) 33 points
5th Jan Lovgreen (21) 32pts

Near Pins: No3 Richard Kubicki, No6 Don Richardson, No12 Gerard Pierson, No15 Paul Avery

Long Putts: No9 Walter Schober, No18 Don Richardson

Thursday, March 11, Pleasant Valley - Stableford

Due to an injured thumb The Admiral was unable to take his place in the field so we were left with 34 golfers ready to take on the somewhat challenging and ever improving Pleasant Valley. We should have had a field of 35 but our dear friend Kevin Dinan had a brain freeze and drove out to Rayong Country Club instead. Leaving myself to “steer the ship”, we departed Caf้ Kronborg right on time at 0815 and arrived at the course 50 minutes later. It was good to see the colourful Mr Walter Baechli back with us after his month or so of serious cycling and John Swanson and Jerry Garcia were also welcomed back into the fold.

The Admiral’s absence meant we were a threesome in the first group and we teed off 25 minutes ahead of schedule at 0935 in perfect conditions, not too hot but with a fairly stiff breeze. The course was as usual looking a treat and the greens were excellent, but I am compelled to make some negative comments regarding the caddies at this course. At least half of the field made comment afterwards that their caddies were nowhere near up to the standard that is expected. At least one of them had never even walked this or any other golf course previously so obviously did not have a clue and some others were merely there for the purpose of pulling the bags. I understand that they have to start somewhere but surely the course management can do what other courses do and have a proper training programme for new caddies.

Our threesome “scorched” around the course in three hours & forty-five minutes which included just one stop for drinks as the weather was perfect as previously mentioned. The group following us was a whopping one hour and ten minutes behind us at the finish. It was a fairly eventful day all round, what with Kevin’s mix up, Mick O’Connor putting his scorecard in the caddy evaluation box and our French friends in the last group leaving the nearest the pin marker on the 13th green. Many thanks to the course Starter who kindly drove out and retrieved it for us.

A Flight was well won today by Frenchman Gerard Pierson with Peter Bye one point behind in second place. A count back saw your humble correspondent finishing third ahead of veteran Don Richardson in fourth place. The consistent Richard Kubicki ended up fifth.

Aussie Andre Van Dyk did it again by winning the B Flight from the in form other half of the Kubicki golfing machine, Carole. A count back saw Kris Helgasson finish third with John Vegeberg in fourth spot. A count back saw another Frenchman, Joseph Bensoussan finish fifth with Graham Buckingham just missing out.

The “Compass Hat” was presented by Stu Rifkin to Paul Avery who lost on a count back to Stu. Good luck to Paul as he is returning to Oz this weekend.

A Flight
1st Gerard Pierson (6) 37pts
2nd Peter Bye (12) 36pts
3rd Peter Blackburn (14) 35pts
4th Don Richardson (10) 35pts
5th Richard Kubicki (11) 34pts
B Flight
1st Andre Van Dyk (19) 39pts
2nd Carole Kubicki (27) 37pts
3rd Kris Helgasson (19) 34pts
4th John Vegeberg (21) 34pts
5th Joseph Bensoussan (19) 33pts

Near Pins: No5 Stu Rifkin, No8 Peter Blackburn, No13 Niels Hansen, No17 Patrice Bardy.

Long Putts: No9 John Swanson, No18 Kris Helgasson

Bob beats pain barrier to bow out in style

PSC golf from Lewiinski’s

Sunday, March 7, Green Valley - Stableford

A Flight
1st Bob Newell (8) 40pts
2nd Dave Dobson 10) 39pts
3rd Seamus Cotter (0) 38pts
B Flight
1st Yui Bietry (13) 38pts
2nd Chaten Patel (14) 37pts
3rd Gavin Knox (13) 37pts
C Flight
1st Kathy Doody (19) 34pts
2ndJohn Warren (18) 33pts
3rd Jim Elphick (24) 31pts

Near Pins: No2 John Deardon, No9 Jim Bell, No12 John Deardon, No16 Jack Spencer

Unusually we are going to start with a couple of apologies: Firstly, to Bob ‘Seamless’ Newell who, in last week’s report, was forgotten to be mentioned as a twice defending club champion. Secondly to our new champion, Blackpool boy Steve Mulberry for neglecting to mention that it was he who lost out to Bob last year on an agonizing count back decision.

Bob Newell.

Bob had a point to prove today, having blown his chances of a hat-trick of club championship wins with an uncharacteristically horrific third round. So he bowed out in style, winning the last day of the tournament with a flawless 40 points that included two 2’s. However the 4 day glory and sweet revenge belonged to Seasider Steve Mulberry.

Dave Dobson finished runner in the championship and today with a solid 39 points. Simon Spalding, playing off a handicap of zero and just back from Oz hit the ground running to fire a super 38 points. That equates to a 2 under 70 off the sticks.

B Flight was won by the red hot Yui ‘Sugar Babe’ Bietry with 38 points. Chaten ‘Fast’ Patel was a shot back, but gained the second spot with a count back verdict over Gavin ‘The Brylcream boy’ who came out of a dire slump to fill the flight.

Kathy, another ‘Sugar Babe’, took the top prize in C Flight on 34 points. Blackpool’s Plate winner, John Warren, was second a shot adrift and ‘Jersey’ Jim Elphick and Steve Kilner fought out a count back a further two shots back with the scales tipping in Jims favor for third.

The Lou-innskis snowball was not claimed and is now worth over six thousand baht

Monday, March 8, Khao Kheow - Stableford
1st Dirk Fleenor (22) 39pts
2nd Pat Hanafin (12) 36pts
3rd Peter Hynard (15) 34pts

While the Sunday night party was excellent, it did serve to dent the golfing turnout of the society come Monday morning. So, it was a depleted field that took on the ever demanding, yet always excellent A and B nines lay out at Khao Kheow.

Texan, Dirk Fleenor led the boys out and led them back in as he carded a solid 39 points to take top spot as the only man to break par. Co. Cork’s Pat Hanafin matched his handicap to take second and Peter Hynard and Marc Napier were a further shot back with Peter gaining the count back verdict.

Pat Hanafin, Peter Henshaw and Colin Davis shared the ‘2’s pot.

Wednesday, March 10, Bangpra - Stableford
A Flight
1st Jim Brackett (7) 37pts
2nd Eddie Beilby (15) 37pts
3rd Tore Eliassen (15) 36pts
B Flight
1st Ivan Plunkett (20) 38pts
2nd Christy Knight (21) 38pts
3rd Lou Szigligeti (20) 37pts

I have said it before that we don’t get a chance to see Ivan Plunkett often enough, but perhaps that is good for the field. Ivan, who plays most of his golf with the Outback boys, raided the Lewiinski’s coffers for the first prize in B Flight with a tidy 38 points. However, it needed the aid of a count back over our regular Lewinski player, Christy (good) Knight. Six to one shot (or should that be 7?) Aussie Lou Zig Zag filled the flight a shot back.

It was count backs all the way in the ‘big boys’ flight with ‘Big’ Jim Brackett coming out on top with 37 points to earn himself a free taxi ride to the airport, at the expense of Eddie ‘the Eagle’ Beilby. Tore Eliassen, Jon Huger and Pat Regan were all bunched together a shot back but Tore took the count back with the best back nine.

Pat Regan, Ricky Farrell, Michel Ischer and Juerg Itten shared the ‘2’s pot.

We are all glad to see Sat Nav back from his round the world trip on a skate board.

Friday, March 12, Treasure Hill - Stableford
A Flight
1st Gavin Knox (11) 43pts
2nd Bill Shepley (14) 40pts
3rd Seamus Cotter (16) 37pts
B Flight
1st Sim Davis (24) 36pts
2nd Colin Davis (17) 35pts
3rd Christy Knight (19) 34pts

It was a case of family fortunes as the Davies family ganged up on Christy (good) Knight, but Christy managed to grab some pocket money as his 34 points gave him third spot in B Flight. ‘The Donkey’ was a point better in second while ‘the pirate Sim of Treasure Hill’ as always came out on top with a steady even par round.

The ‘big boys’ went bananas in the top flight as Gavin ‘The Brylcream Boy’ ravaged the course with a mighty 43 points for the day’s honors. Bill Shepley posted a rock solid 40 points to gain second and Seamus captain Cotter brought up the rear with a steady 37.

Gavin Knox, Mike Mcphee, Lou Szigligeti, Sim Davis and Joe Hagen shared the ‘2’s pot.

Joe is taking a while to get back in the swing of things, pity he never made it back to the bar as he would have copped 11,170 big ones in the Lou-inskis free draw.

Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Roaring 40’s are order of the day

Golf from the Travellers Rest

Saturday winners Pat Quilavin, Wayne Harman, Michael Prideaux,
Tewin Lamthong, Tristan Gilbert and Neil Bramley.

Barry Hooper
I am amazed but there is nothing out of order to report: just a great week’s golf with great people on some great courses. However 40 points seemed to be the order required for a win as three division prizes were taken with forty plus points during the week.

The first of them was on Monday at Plutaluang, in fact there were two on the day. One came from Stuart James who must have been gutted when he found out that Tony Amayo with his forty had beaten him on count-back over the back nine by two. The next was on Thursday at Phoenix, Mike McPhee returned a forty-two pointer to win Division 1. The last came from Paul Quilavin at Khao Kheo on Saturday with forty-one to win Division 1.

Monday, March 8, Plutaluang - Stableford
1st Tony Amayo (17) 40pts
2nd Stuart James (28) 40pts
3rd Ian Dallas (11) 35pts
4th Larry Simpson (10) 33pts

The first outing of the week was to Plutaluang on Monday where we had a good entry but just one full division and places down to fourth.

In fifth and just missing out was Howard Taylor who lost to Larry Simpson on count back. Third place went to Ian Dallas with his thirty-five and then a count back battle ensued for second and first with the honours going to Tony Amayo over Stuart James.

Only a single ‘2’ on the day from Carl Eisenkriev

The second division saw a win for Phil Battah with thirty-seven points, ahead of Jimmy Merritt in second and Roger Wilkinson who took third on count back over John Merritt.

Tristan Gilbert was the victor in the top flight with thirty-four points and going one better than his previous Tuesday outing. Bill McGarvie came in second, also with thirty-four but losing on count back. Third place went to Alan Thomas after beating both Mike McPhee and Brendan Moore another on count back.

Just the two ‘2’s recorded today from Mike McPhee and Gerry Swan.

2nd Neil Bramley (8) 38pts

1st Phil Battah (15) 38pts
2nd Jimmy Merritt (32) 36pts
3rd Roger Wilkinson (16) 35pts
4th Mike Rushant (13) 33pts

Thursday was our usual Thursday outing to Phoenix, this time playing the Ocean and Mountain nines. We had a very big entry and two full divisions.

The second division had Phil Battah at the top with thirty-eight points, two ahead of Jimmy Merritt in second with third place going to Roger Wilkinson at thirty-five.

A forty-two pointer from Mike McPhee was enough to win the first division, Neil Bramley took second on thirty-eight and Mod Chaviraksa came in third one point further back. These were some great scores on a course that was playing long.

Three ‘2’s came from Mike McPhee (7th), Tewin Lamthong (13th) and Roger Ison (17th).

Saturday, March 13, Khao Kheow – Stableford
Div. 1
1st Tewin Lamthong (9) 38pts

3rd Michael Prideaux (12) 34pts
4th Tristan Gilbert (12) 34pts
5th Mike McPhee (6) 33pts

2nd Brad Dippie (20) 39pts
3rd Wayne Harman (17) 34pts
4th Pierre Ruggieri (29) 33pts
5th Robert Ledlie (20) 32pts

Saturday and off we went to our alternative weekend venue of Khao Kheow. The entry numbers were good and we had two divisions (0-12) and (13 up) with payouts down to fourth place in both.

Division 2 had Paul Quinlavin at the top of the list with a great forty-one pointer. In second was Brad Dippie at thirty-nine and it was five more back to third and Wayne Harman with thirty -four. Coming in fourth was Pierre Riggieri with thirty-three.

Tewin Lamthong was top dog in the first division with thirty-eight points and a full three back ahead of Neil Bramley in second. Michael Prideaux took third spot with thirty-four after winning the count back over Tristan Gilbert.

There was only the one ‘2’ today and all the plunder went to Gerry Swan.

Kelly on the march

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

IMonday, March 8, Plutaluang – Stableford

Following a heavy weekend to celebrate Miss Faa’s 30(+) birthday and Kevin Tobins 1st anniversary, there were only eight groups signed up on Monday so we just had the 2 divisions. We were allocated the North and West courses which pleased everyone and the cut today (with only one lady playing) was 6-17 in Division 1 and 18 plus in Division 2.

The conditions were pleasant upon arrival with a nice cool breeze blowing, and with some hard fairways encountered there were some outlandish bounces from the drives on the first hole on the North nine.

Tom Novak recorded his best score for many months to win Division 2 with 36 points after beating Terry Redding on a 20/18 back nine count back. Jimmy Johnson (yet again) was in the frame in third place with 31 points.

Keith Hector came in with 38 points to win Division 1 with Peter Davies just one point behind in second. Ron Miller, in his last game but one before his return to Minnesota, lost out to John McLoone on a 17/20 back nine count back for third place after they both scored 36 points.

As always in the last group out there were three nearest the pin winners and of course no names mentioned: 3N Ted Gardner &Barry Rawlinson, 6N Ted Gardner & Ray Thirtle, 3W David Phillips & Chris Hart, and 8W Bryan Rought & Tony Duthie.

There were no ‘2’s today in either division so a single rollover to Wednesday at Pattaya Country Club.

Wednesday, March 10, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford

Back to normality today with three divisions for the men and of course the ladies competition as well. We arrived at the course to a very gloomy and murky outlook in the surrounding area and many of our players were expecting heavy rain but we were assured this would not happen. The temperature was way below that of recent times and everyone enjoyed the difference in the playing conditions.

Forty-two points was the highest recorded score of the day and it came from Frank Kelly who took out Division 1 by 4 points from Barry Stirling in second. Ron Miller lost out yet again on a count back, this time 16/18, to the Sheffield boy now playing off 6, Andy Mills, who took third after both players finished on 36 points. We are all still waiting after Andy’s many wins and placings for the bell to be rung!

Ben Findon’s 38 points was the highest score today in the second division, with Jim Connelly (of course) beating ‘Count back’ Burnie 18/16 for second place after they both finished on 36 points.

In the frame again was Jimmy Johnson who won Division 3 with 36 points ahead of Les Winch in second, one point behind, and Barry Rawlinson in third who took a count back decision over Gordon Everingham, Tony Holehouse and Tom Novak, all four players returning 34 points.

Smiling all evening and sitting with the girls was Miss Nang who took first prize in the ladies division with 38 points. Mam Morel was second with 34 and Miss Nut came in third two points behind.

Near Pins went to Mam Morel (2), Jim Connelly, Maurio Vihasalo (2), Joe Kubon, Frank Kelly and Tony Duthie

There were four ‘2’s in Division 1 today from Frank Kelly on the tough 16th, Maurio and Jean Morel on the 12th and Barry Stirling on the tough 175-yd uphill 7th hole where no ladies or any second division players reached the green.

Gabe wins one for the “guppy”

Tuesday, March 9, Khao Kheow - Stableford

Thanks go to our captain, DB, for scheduling Khao Kheow course again, one of our favourites (except for Steve Hamstad, who attended never the less). The weather was fine and the greens were medium speed. We played off the yellow tees, which makes the course a challenge and anybody who plays to their handicap should be saluted.

Tuesday’s flight winners John Robertson and Brian Gabe.

In the evening, back at Markland’s roof top restaurant, our babbling brook, DB, recounted the events of the day. I asked Brian Gabe, our “A” Flight winner to what he attributed his success at KK. He responded that he had wanted to “win one for the guppy”. Methinks he was referring to his pet which had long since passed away. This sentiment brought tears to all our eyes, especially visitor Tony Wickham, who himself has several aquariums and is acquainted with the anguish following over-fed fish.

A Flight (0-18)
1st Brian Gabe 37pts
2nd Richard Kubicki 34pts
3rd Mashi Kenata 32pts
B Flight (19 up)
1st John Robertson 38pts
2nd Mike O’Brien 36pts
3rd Frank Pilkington 33pts

Bridge in Paradise : by Neil Robinson

Imagine you are sitting in fourth seat.  Everyone passes and it is up to you to decide whether or not to open.  Do you bid or do you pass with the eleven point hand below?

S: KJ98

H: AK109

D: 9854

C: 10

Many bridge players are familiar with the rule of eleven and the rule of twenty.  The rule of fifteen is less well known.  It applies when you are trying to decide whether to open in fourth seat after three passes.  It states that, if your points plus the number of spades in your hand add up to fifteen, then open.

It may sound a bit arbitrary, but makes sense.  If you are light on points, then you should hold something in spades, because, if you open, then either the opponents or your partner are likely to bid spades at some point (it being the boss suit).  If you cannot either frustrate your opponents or support your partner in spades, then you will probably end up with a negative score.

This hand was played recently in a duplicate game.  At all but one table the hand was passed out.  Only at the table where the bidder used the rule of fifteen was this hand opened.  East-West were vulnerable and East dealt.  The bidding was brief:

East     South     West       North

P           P              P              1D

P           1H          All pass

North passed South’s 1H bid because South was a previously passed hand and North’s hand only just met the requirements of the rule of fifteen.  So 1H was the final contract.  This was the full deal:

                        S: KJ988

                        H: AK109

                        D: 9854

                        C: 10

S: AQ65                              S: 4

H: 65                                   H: QJ

D: K632                              D: QJ107

C: J63                                  C: K98542

                        S: 10732

                        H: 87432

                        D: A

                        C: AQ7

A low club was led to the king and ace.  Trumps were pulled in two rounds and a diamond led to the ace.  Then the ten of spades was led towards board and ducked all round.  A second spade was taken by the ace, but this was the first and last trick for the defence (the only way for the defence to make a second trick is an opening lead of the ace of spades and a spade continuation, ruffed by East).

Now declarer’s hand is good (the low club can be ruffed on board and the queen of spades is marked with West).  As the cards lie, N-S can make a small slam, all on a deal which most players passed out!
