Maria Kirilenko plans early arrival in Pattaya

Russian star Maria Kirilenko, who knocked out former champion Maria Sharapova at the Australian Open, is planning to arrive early in Pattaya to prepare for the upcoming US$220,000 PTT Pattaya Open, which is being held at the Dusit Thani, Pattaya from 7 – 14 February 2010.

Maria Kirilenko in action at the 2007 Pattaya Women’s Open.

Kirilenko, who is gifted with skills as well as good looks, has made a good start to the season reaching the quarter finals in Melbourne last week where she lost to China’s Jie Zheng. She picked up a leg injury in that match but hopes to shake that off in time to be here in Pattaya one week before the tournament starts, to acclimatize and prepare.
Kirilenko will be making her second appearance in Pattaya, her first visit three years ago ended in disappointment with a first round loss, but this year she is determined to improve and go all the way to the final.
The PTT Pattaya Open, part of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour has generated plenty of interest from overseas with heavy ticket bookings being made for the finals weekend and extensive international TV coverage over the final three days confirmed including Russia, Germany, Italy, Mexico, UK and USA as well as STAR/ESPN in Asia.
Tickets for the tournament are on sale at the following prices: Sunday 7 February (qualifying rounds) – 200 baht. Monday 8 February – Thursday 11 February (1st and 2nd rounds of main draw) - 300, 500 and 800 baht. Friday 12 February – Sunday 14 February (Quarters, semi-finals and final) - 300, 500, 800 and 1000 baht. Ocean Marina Club Series 2010 - First Blood Part 1

Kipsan Beck
Yacht racing out of Jomtien’s Ocean Marina Yacht Club commenced in mid January under sunny skies and a fresh northerly breeze, with the 2010 series seeing a number of new participants and some familiar faces. The keelboats, multihulls and sportsboats will race each month until November, in a year long series.

Last weekend’s winner Morten Jakobsen on his Platu “Emma Matilde X”.

With a change in scoring designed to attract more recreational sailors, OMYC now operates racing under the international IRC rule as well as simultaneously providing club handicapping. This means any boat in Pattaya, including day sailors and cruising boats, can join in racing with scoring based on an accessed handicap for boat and crew that changes over time. Also in 2010, courses will include more cruising long distance courses for the less racing inclined, catering for the large number of new boats in the marina.
Shaking off the cobwebs last weekend, 2 days of medium distance and buoy racing saw 3 Platus, a 25 foot racing boat design, taking the top 3 places under the IRC rule. Under the handicap system known as PHS, past results take into account both the boat and the crew.
PHS saw Morten Jakobsen in a Platu taking first, with David Bell on Magic Roundabout taking second and the 48 foot Le Vent of Pote Suyasinto taking third, a reflection of how strong the one design class has become with a lot of visiting sailors.
Using PHS only, the cruising division featured Ocean Marina’s Kirati Assakul winning in his catamaran Sonic, with Andrew Watt’s Sansanook in second and Dutch Raver, a new boat at the marina, taking third.
Te next racing will be a long distance race up to Koh Si Chang on Feb 13, with the race back the following day. With an onshore party and 2 days of long distance sailing; racing yachts, dayboats, cruising yachts and even motorboats join in the flotilla with safe anchorage and a party with friends.
Note: OMYC Sailing is a non profit organization formed to promote keelboat sailing at Ocean Marina, Jomtien. Racing is held usually on the 2nd weekend each month. Beginners and experienced sailors are welcome to join racing, training and cruising, with places usually available.

Fashion on and off the field at Thai Polo Open 2010

The Harilela players celebrate winning the royal trophy
as they are congratulated by the Jogo Elevation team.

Saksiri Uraiworn
No real dress code was required, but since it is a beautiful game it’s also nice to look beautiful for the occasion. Even the horses were so elegantly groomed that they blended in well with the glamorous dresses and fancy hats on parade at the final of the 7th ‘Mercedes-Benz & B.Grimm Charity Thai Polo Open 2010 held on Saturday, Jan. 16.

Harilela the Next Level go on the attack in the final.
The match was presided over by Privy Councilor H.E. Air Chief Marshal Kamthon Sindhvananda, and was held at Thai Polo & Equestrian Club in Pattaya. The event was organized, as in previous years, by Harald Link, C.E.O of B.Grimm Group to raise funds for the Chitralada Vocational School project under the patronage of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. The funds will go towards providing students with a good education and training to help them gain future employment.
This tournament is always a great excuse to get outdoors and enjoy nature, meet lots of new people and watch some thrilling sports action into the bargain. Some illustrious polo fans in attendance included HRH Crown Prince Abdullah ibni Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang, Malaysia, who made time in his busy schedule to fly in and cheer on the teams. Also attending the event was the Saudi Charge d’Affaires to Thailand, H.E. Nabil Hussein Ashri and his wife, who both seemed to thoroughly enjoy the occasion.
Throughout the afternoon the thousand or so guests had enjoyed a wide variety of entertainment to keep them occupied during lulls in the on-field action. A superb lunch time buffet was accompanied by music from the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra and this was followed by a Mercedes-Benz car show, a kid’s polo match, pony rides, polo clinic, fortune telling and English high tea. There was also of course the tradition of stomping the divots down on the playing field during the halftime break in the final, although some of the footwear on show was maybe not the best designed for such a purpose.
In the final of the polo itself, the Harilela the Next Level team certainly took it up a notch as they scored a commanding 8-1 victory over the Jogo Elevation outfit to win the royal trophy. This seventh edition of the tournament attracted 7 teams altogether, with players coming from far and wide to participate. Some of the countries represented included Pakistan, India, Germany, Argentina, Ireland, Malaysia, England and Thailand.
In the earlier subsidiary final between Royal Pahang and Thai Polo, the Malaysian team were left facing the prospect of a 7-1 drubbing until a late spirited charge in the final chukka (period) saw them claw their way back to respectability with a 7-5 final score.
And so as the sun went down to end a memorable day, the cocktail party was in full swing and the event was concluded with a spectacular display of fireworks that lit up the night sky over the Thai Polo & Equestrian Club. It was indeed a fitting way to celebrate yet another fantastic polo event.

Men and beasts battle for the ball.

A vintage Mercedes car forms part of the auto show.

The juniors get ready for their own polo match.

Some nifty footwear on show to stamp down the divots.

A first for Fergus

Golf from the Travellers Rest

Barry Hooper
A first what you might ask? A hole in one is the answer; Fergus’ first here in Thailand. Many golfers at both amateur and professional levels go all the way through their golfing careers and never ever obtain a hole in one, while some others have many. That is just the way the cookie crumbles. This was Fergus’s second overall. He waited a long time for his first he tells me, and that was in England about five years ago.

The “Hole in One” man, Fergus Brennan.

This second one came at Emerald last Monday on the par-3 fifteenth, which was playing one hundred and thirty two yards on the day. His choice of weapon was a nine iron and the ball made only one bounce at about eighteen inches away before disappearing into the cup. As you can imagine, congratulations were offered to him from all present and the traditional drink for all in attendance was on offer back at the Travellers Rest presentation. Well done Fergus!
Monday, Jan. 18, The Emerald - Stableford
Div. 1
1st Fergus Brennan (10) 40pts
2nd Jon Dean (8) 35pts
3rd Llew Matthews (0) 34pts
Div. 2
1st Roger Wilkinson (16) 37pts
2nd Per Karlsen (17) 35pts
3rd Fred Gemme (14) 33pts
Div. 3
1st Alun Webber (21) 39pts
2nd Paula Byrne (27) 34pts
3rd Seamus Farrell (36) 34pts
Monday at Emerald saw a great turnout so three full divisions.
The third flight saw Alun Webber take the win with thirty-nine points and followed home by Paula Byrne with her thirty-four, after beating Seamus Farrell on the count back
Division 2 was a win for Roger Wilkinson with his thirty-seven, second and two back was Per Karlsen with thirty-five and in third was Fred Gemme at thirty-three.
The senior flight had scratch player Llew Matthews in third at thirty-four, second spot went to Jon Dean with thirty-five, but the winner with a forty pointer was inevitably Fergus Brennan, with his “hole in one” assisting in what was a very good round anyway.
There were four very disappointed players who attained a ‘2’; Roger Wilkinson (2), Liam Horgan, Derek Lucas and Brendan Moore. Why? Because Fergus not only also had a ‘2’ but his “hole in one” took the pot as that has always been the case at the TRGG.
Tuesday, Jan. 19, Eastern Star - Stableford
Div. 1
1st Neil Bramley (8) 39pts
2nd George Robinson (11) 34pts
3rd Jon Dean (8) 34pts
Div. 2
1st Trevor Thorley (16) 38pts
2nd Mike Rushant (13) 37pts
3rd John Thornber (16) 35pts
A very good attendance so two full divisions and the second flight saw a battle for third decided on count back, with Per Karlsen and John Thornber both at thirty-five and John just edging it. Mike Rushant came home with thirty-seven for second spot and the winner was Trevor Thorley with thirty-eight.
In the top division third spot went to Howard Tyler with thirty-four after losing out on count back to George Robinson. The winner meanwhile was Neil Bramley with his fine score of thirty-nine.
Only one ‘2’ on the day and that was from George Robinson at the seventeenth.
Thursday, Jan. 21, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
Div. 1
1st Fergus Brennan (9) 32pts
2nd Tewin Lamthong (10) 29pts
3rd Jon Dean (8) 29pts
Div. 2
1st George Robinson (11) 38pts
2nd Jerry McCarthy (16) 34pts
3rd Roger Wilkinson (15) 34pts
Div. 3
1st Billy Ostle (17) 30pts
2nd Garry Hall (22) 28pts
3rd Jack McNamara (20) 27pts
We did not go to our usual Thursday venue this week; we went to Mountain Shadow after a logistical error came up at our usual Thursday course. However a problem immediately ensued: no buggies available. Why? Well it seems that the ridiculous rule they have of only one player in a buggy saw all the early teeing off Koreans hogging the carts.
A couple were found after it was pointed out to the management that we had a couple of players who would find it impossible to walk the whole course. Why is the solution to this problem not obvious to the course? In the high season when you are so very busy allow two in a buggy and you will then have enough to go round.
The course was in excellent condition and played hard, as was apparent when you view the returned scores with only one player out of the thirty-six beating their handicap.
In the third flight Jack McNamara took third with just twenty-seven points (I told you the scores were low), in second was Garry Hall with twenty-eight, and a very surprised Billy Ostle won the division with his thirty-pointer.
The second tier honours went to George Robinson with thirty-eight points, followed home by Jerry McCarthy at thirty-four after winning the count back over Roger Wilkinson.
In the top division third spot was claimed by Jon Dean with twenty-nine (yes, twenty-nine) and second spot went to Tewin Lamthong, also with twenty-nine but winning out in the count-back. The winner was the man who started off his week with a hole in one, Fergus Brennan, but this time with a score of just thirty-two points.
There were only two ‘2’s from Steve Smith and Barry Wood.
Saturday, Jan. 23, Khao Kheow – Stableford
Div. 1
1st Robert Andrews (5) 35pts
2nd Jon Lay (8) 33pts
3rd Barry Wood (7) 32pts
4th Jon Dean (8) 32pts
Div. 2
1st Trevor Thorley (15) 34pts
2nd Amphan North (14) 33pts
3rd Mod Chaviraksa (11) 31pts
4th Liam Horgan (13) 31pts
Div. 3
1st David Brown (18) 36pts
2nd Paula Byrne (27) 34pts
3rd Derek Lucas (18) 33pts
4th Joan Murphy (19) 31pts
There was a very, very good turnout at Khao Kheow on Saturday so we had three divisions. Good weather to start the day but this was to change as rain came in big time for the last six holes so there were some very soggy golfers at the end of play.
In the third division Derek Lucas took third spot with thirty-three points, second went to Paula Byrne with thirty-four and the winner was David Brown with thirty-six .
Division 2 had Trevor Thorley at the top with thirty-four points, followed in by Amphan North at thirty-three, and yet another of our attractive ladies, Mod Chaviraksa, in third spot at thirty-one. I have it reported that when the rain came in it drastically changed the appearance of Mod who was wearing an all white outfit. The rain revealed a little more of her than she had planned. Apparently her under garments were black. Good job they were not white as well. I am not sure if this was off putting for her fellow players or not!
The winner of the top division was Robert Andrews with his thirty-five points and in second was Jon Lay with thirty-three. Third spot went to Barry Wood after he won the count back over Jon Dean, both at thirty-two.
Seven ‘2’s came from Mod Chaviraksa (2), Robert Andrews, Jack Watkins, Barry Wood, Trevor Thorley and Llew Matthews.
Note: If you want any further information about the golf outings played by the TRGG please contact Fergus Brennan on 086 056 7019 or call in to the Travellers Rest on Soi LK Metro.

Grant Cadell is best of the week

IPGC golf from The Haven

Monday, Jan 18, Bangpra - Stableford
Div. 1 (0-15)
1st Brian Beaupre 36pts
2nd Rodney Hayes 36pts
3rd Warren Gallop 33pts
Div. 2 (16 +)
1st Dave Spendley 31pts
2nd John Ward 31pts
3rd Derek Holt 30pts
A difficult start to a week, that saw a total of 150 golfers playing from The Haven, at Bangpra where the greens were almost back to their old speeds, with anything above the hole a bit of a nightmare. The scores reflected the difficulty of the course with the CSS of the day moving out to 74 even with two divisions being required due to the numbers of players attending.
The first division was led home by Brian Beaupre, who this time managed to turn the tables of Rodney Hayes by beating him for first place with a better count back of 21 to 20, having lost the last meeting by the same margin. Warren Gallop at last showed his class with his first podium placing a further three shots behind them.
The second division was also a very tight affair, although scoring was at a premium with five-over good enough to win the division. It took a better 20 to 18 count back before Dave Spendley was declared the winner over John Ward, with the now almost ever-present Derek Holt in third another stroke back.
Lynn Ward had the only ‘2’ in the second division and Brian Beaupre added to his day’s haul with the only one in the first division.
Before presenting the prizes The Doc welcomed new members Marc Jensen and Stephen Brown and also welcomed back Peter Aitcheson, Mike Sanders sans bell, Kjell Christiansen, Andy Robinson, Rick Schramm and Norman McKinnon.
Wednesday, Jan 20, Rayong C.C. - Stableford
Div. 1 (0–14)
1st Danny Miller 37pts
2nd Al Keith 37pts
3rd Paul Egan 36pts
Div. 2 (15–19)
1st Grant Cadell 41pts
2nd Tom Atkins 39pts
3rd John Ward 38pts
Div. 3 (20 +)
1st Tom Breslin 40pts
2nd Leo McCauley 37pts
3rd Shuichi Kodaka 37pts
Another huge turnout required three divisions, this time with many players wanting to play the course recently used for pre-qualifying for the Asian Tour, and being pleasantly surprised that the course was in pretty good condition all round although the greens were lacking speed and needing a bit of a pruning. That said the scoring was fairly good with the CSS staying at the standard 72.
Division one was led in by Danny Miller, although he had to go to the count back which he won 20 to 18 over Al Keith after they had both started slowly. Paul Egan took third place on level par.
Grant Cadell put in another strong round to return five under handicap and sweep the second division away by two, ahead of Tom Atkins in second and another one from John Ward in third.
Tom Breslin made it a happy Irish day with his first win out of soi 13 for some time, by a three shot margin over Leo McCauley and Shuichi Kodaka, with Leo winning the count back over Shuichi with a better 20 to 18.
Sean Hallahan and Gerry Doyle shared the pool for the second division ‘2’s whilst Tom Atkins, Danny Miller, Marc Jensen and Grant Cadell shared the first division.
Back at The Haven prior to the presentations there were welcomes for Seamus O’Connor, Leo McCauley, John McKenna, Aiden Kelly, Jim Kelly, Terry Kelly, Mark Kelly, Paul Egan, Gerry Doyle, Matt Kennerly and Mark Bonner and also welcome backs for Graham Howard and Konrad Klama.
Friday, Jan. 22, Green Valley - Stableford
Div. 1(0-15)
1st Brian Wilkinson 38pts
2nd Bob Lamond 37pts
3rd Tony Barritt 35pts
4th Ray Banks 34pts
Div. 2 (16 +)
1st John Harris 39pts
2nd Shuichi Kodaka 38pts
3rd Derek Holt 37pts
4th Mark Ward 36pts
Once again another large turn out, but not quite enough to require three divisions, to play the always popular Green Valley, which on the day was almost overcrowded but playing extremely well, although the day was marred slightly by a sudden downpour that caught most of the players in the middle of the back nine and played havoc with the final scores.
Brian Wilkinson added another wire to his bow with a win, “that should have been 6 shots better” according to the player himself, but was still just enough to pip Bob Lamond into second by a shot.
Tony Barritt came back to form with a one-over handicap score for third place with Ray Banks winning the count back with Grant Cadell on the back six with a score of 11 to 10 after they had tied the nine on 16 a piece.
The second division was headed by John Harris for his first win in over a year by the slimmest of margins over Shuichi Kodaka, going one better than his previous outing in second spot, and Derek Holt again showing strongly in third place while Mark Ward picked up his first podium placing in fourth.
Peter Sumner, Bob Lamond and Alan Griffiths shared the ‘2’s pool in the first division and Tony Charlwood, Derek Holt, Roar Berger and George Pittam did the same in the second division.
Back at The Haven The Doc welcomed back Arthur Heinneman, John Ingram and Jeremy Masse before the presentations were made.

McGovern & North rise to the occasion

PSC Golf Club Championship - 2010

William Macey
Khao Kheow - A difficult course to decide the club champion but not everything went smoothly for our 140 participants. Weeks of preparation goes into arranging dates, times, prizes, collecting money and everything that is involved in a two day competition, only to find that 100 Koreans had been booked in before us and another group, who had booked caddies, immediately after us.

PSC 2010 Men’s and Ladies’ Champions, Brendon McGovern and Amphan North collect their trophies from the PSC’s William Macey.

The early starters teed off on time but we then found they had run out of caddies. No amount of shouting could improve the situation but after some delay we were given free buggies with the promise that caddies would be sent out to us as soon as possible, which, to be fair to the club, they did. Why the club should decide to make the course as easy as possible on this first day is difficult to understand, but we were almost on the ladies tees most of the time, something less than 5,900 yards.
This was reflected in the scores with a net 65 from Nial Higgins and a few 68s and many 69s in evidence and many 40 plus points on the stableford groups. Pointing out this fact to the manager had some effect for I am sure he was rubbing his hands with glee when he decided to put us on the very back tees for the second day. “An exploration into the unknown”, as someone said. I found parts of Khao Kheow that I did not know existed.
As you can imagine, we had a different set of scores on the second day than we had on the first. Only Staffan Lysentam beat par in the men’s competition, the rest trailing a long way back. There were some regular faces in the winners’ circle; Mashi Kaneta, Dave Richardson, Tony Robbins and Carole Kubicki among them.
The overall champions, that is the man and lady with the best gross score were Brendon McGovern with 153 gross and Amphan North with 169 gross. Well done to those two and to all all those also in the frame.
Men’s Overall Champion
Brendon McGovern, 153 gross
Ladies Overall Champion
Amphan North, 169 gross

‘Hunter’ Gosden wins his first Monthly Mug

PSC golf from the Café Kronborg

Peter Blackburn
Monday, Jan. 18, Treasure Hill – Stableford
At long last we had a cooler morning, which was more like it for this time of year in Pattaya, and 37 keen golfers assembled at Café Kronborg in readiness for the trip to the challenging Treasure Hill. Hearty welcomes were handed out to Arne Max & Lasse Boskon who are visiting from Denmark.

Mike Gosden (left) receives the Café Kronborg Monthly Mug from Bjarne.

After the 60 minute drive we arrived at the course and once more it appeared that we just about had the course to ourselves as our first group was able to tee off almost immediately at 0950. As mentioned earlier, the weather was great and a nice stiff breeze helped to make conditions extremely comfortable for golf. The course was in good shape as usual although some found the greens a bit too fast for their liking and indeed most of us struggled at times which is reflected in the scores as no-one was able to “shoot” to their handicap.
The A Flight was won by Brian Gabe, while Marcel Wittwer beat Walter Baechli on a count back for second place and Richard Kubicki finished fourth. Pekka Mustonen was the winner in B Flight with Peter Hammond second and Kristen Helgason third. Fourth place went to Mike Winfield. The Admiral himself continued his good form by taking out C Flight and J C Lhoste pipped Wayne Koch on a count back for second, with Martyn Topham completing the podium in fourth place.

Thursday, Jan. 21, Phoenix (Ocean & Mountain) –Monthly Mug/Stroke
It was that time of the month again when we are required to count all our shots in playing a stroke round in an attempt to claim the coveted Café Kronborg Monthly Mug. As ever the venue was Phoenix and thirty two of us headed off at out usual time of 0815 for the short drive to the course. The weather was once again perfect and not too hot although at times the gathering dark clouds looked a little ominous but the forecasted rain thankfully stayed away.
We were once more invited to the first tee on Ocean nine 20 minutes earlier than scheduled and our first group teed off at 0940. The course was in great shape as is to be expected and all in our group managed to play steady golf, although one of us stood out with a very good round and ended up being victorious on the day.
The January Café Kronborg Monthly Mug was well won by a guy who has very recently arrived back in Pattaya but this time to take up residence here. I am sure we will see some very good golf in the future from this fine competitor and former fellow member of Gosnells Golf Club in Perth, Western Australia (my old golf club), so hearty congratulations to Mike ‘Hunter’ Gosden for winning his first Café Kronborg Monthly Mug with a net 68.
A Flight was won by Richard Kubicki (this is becoming monotonous) with Finn Olsen in second place. There was a count back for third & fourth places with Marcel Wittwer being victorious over ‘yours truly’.
Jesper Rasmussen won the B Flight easily from J C Lhoste, who beat Mike Herridge on a count back for second place. The Admiral himself finished in fourth place and also managed to win the prestigious “Compass” award.
I would also like to thank Bjarne of Café Kronborg for his continued support of this event.

Martin on the mark

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Joey’s column
Monday, Jan. 18, Burapha - Stableford
It was a sunny morning, but the fresh wind, coupled with the hard and fast greens, set up difficult playing conditions for the 49 Outbackers playing Crystal & Dunes from the white tees. Returning to the customary 2-tee start, everybody was quickly away and finished some four hours later.
With the exception of one outstanding score from Kev Moraghan on 40 points to win Div B by the record margin of 10 shots, only two other players matched their handicap; Amarjit Banwaitt (Raji) – winner of Div A and Stuart Rifkin – winner of Div D. Div C was won with 35 points by Andy Baber, who has taken a long time to return to winning ways.
Raji has been playing with the Outback for a few days now, winning last week at Eastern Star and in the frame every other time. As a result his h’cap came under review by General Jack & Capt’ Bob who decided he was far too comfortable on his h’cap of 7 and cut him to 6.
Welcome back to Ray Atkinson, Bill Fenton, Ray Thirtle, Harry Cowling & Stuart Rifkin and welcome also to a couple of first timers at the Outback; Peter Bye and Owen Lloyd.
There were seven ‘2’s from Raji, David Davies, Colin Bavington, Bernie Segrave, El Suggs, Stu Rifkin & Bob Lindborg.

Tuesday, Jan. 19, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
Some quite outrageous scoring from some of the 18 Outbackers at Pattaya Country Club, as Norm Martin (44pts), Don Tyldsley (40pts) and John Cogan (40pts) all went on the rampage. Div B completely outplayed Div A, which could only muster a top score of 36 points, attained by the day’s organiser, Barry Chadbourn. PCC regulars, Alan Pearce and Arthur Bailey filled two of the minor placings, both with 34 points.
There were no ‘2’s, hence the placing of first through to fourth in two divisions.

4th Geoff Moodie (26) 32pts
Wednesday, Jan. 20, Greenwood - Stableford
Has Greenwood forgotten about the best nine holes it’s got, the C nine? It just never seems to be open whenever the Outback make the journey up the 331.
None of the 23 Outbackers on the A & B nines produced anything spectacular, with only Danny Medd (welcome to the Outback) playing to handicap, to win Div A, followed in by Shutts (34pts), who was two under gross on one nine and a mess on the other!
Emile Van De Wiele took Div B with the very ordinary score of just 33 points from Paul Smets (31pts) and Bob Lindborg (30); as many six other players, either got lost on the way back or elected to bin their card.
There were two ‘2’s from Bruce Milner and Danny Medd
Div A (0-16)
1st Danny Medd (15) 36pts
2nd Lloyd Shuttleworth (3) 34pts
3rd Barry McIntosh (16) 31pts
Div B (17+)
1st Emile Van De Wiele (20) 33pts
2nd Paul Smets (21) 31pts
3rd Bob Lindborg (17) 30pts
Friday, Jan. 22, Khao Kheow - Stableford
Seriously heavy rain in January, what’s happened to the dry season? It wasn’t just a local shower either, it poured down right across the area, from Khao Kheow to Phoenix and from Siam Old Course to Pattaya City; it didn’t however, rain at Royal Lakeside.
Most of the 47 Outbackers here today completed the full round but many of the podium finishers played only 17 holes but apparently had done enough. Ian Heddle topped Div A with 37 points from UK Pro, James Sheffield, who just failed by one shot at Rayong C.C. to go through to the next rounds of the Asian Tour qualifier in Hua Hin last week.
Bernie Stafford (40pts) ran away with Div B by nine from George Bishop and Tom Byrne but the poor scoring in Div C meant that there was a surprise winner in Don Peterson with only 32 points from a couple of new boys to the Outback, Pete Godfrey (31pts) & Mick Folan (30pts).
In spite of docking the ladies a couple of ‘courtesy’ shots, Jum still had a convincing win, firing one of her lowest rounds ever, with a marvellous 42 points; seven clear of another rapidly improving lady, Kung on 35 points. The nearest male contenders were Brian Maddox and John Stafford both with 30; come on guys – just how many shots do you need from the ladies!
There were six ‘2’s from Bernie Stafford, Shutts, Jum, Brian Holden, Tom Byrne & Kev Hamilton.
Div A (0-11)
1st Ian Heddle (3) 37
2nd James Sheffield (2) 35pts
3rd Bob Pearce (11) 33pts
Div B (12 & 13)
1st Bernie Stafford (12) 40pts
2nd George Bishop (13) 31pts
3rd Tom Byrne (13) 31pts
Div C (14-18)
1st Don Peterson (14) 32pts
2nd Pete Godfrey (18) 31pts
3rd Mick Folan (15) 30pts
Div D (19+)
1st Jum Karagit (19) 42pts
2nd Kung Pimjun (22) 35pts
3rd Brian Maddox (19) 30pts

Frans torpedoes the field at Navy

PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside

Tuesday, Jan. 19, Plutaluang - Stableford
Tuesday saw 2 divisions of ML golfers tackle the South followed by the North course at Plutaluang. The split was at 19+, where we saw Frans Olgers (22) fire a best ever 40 points to take B Flight ahead of Jimmy Fortune (26) with 37 points. In the A Flight, we had new player Bart Starink (16) shoot a creditable 39 points to top the podium, ahead of Paul Jordaan.
The course was in good condition, with well grassed greens offering a fair putting surface to all.
Near Pins were collected by Ken H (S4), Maryka S (S7), Philip (N3) and Tony C (N6).
Thursday, Jan. 21, Khao Kheow - Stableford
We were off to Khao Kheow on Thursday where we were allocated to play the A & C courses from the true yellow tees. The course was in tip top condition, fairways well defined and greens true, smooth and reasonably paced. The rough was a bit thin as the dry weather takes hold, making it not quite as punishing as it can be.
Not quite enough for 2 divisions today, but we had some very close scores over the whole field. In first place today was Tony Chetland (18) with 33 points, closely followed by Monty Sykes (6), just back from the U.S. with 32. A count back was required to separate the next 4 players, all on 31 points, to define thirrd & fourth places: Frans Olgers (20) secured third with 17 on the back, while Jeff Wylie (5) got fourth with 14 on the back (12 on the last 6 holes). Tony W & Keith H, 11 and 9 respectively, were the unlucky golfers to miss out.
Jeff also got all 4 Near Pins today, pity he can’t putt though!
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday (we sometimes change to accommodate a Thai Holiday). Presentations are made at the course on Tuesday, with Mulligans Lakeside hosting the Thursday presentation.
For more details on scheduling etc, please call Jeff 089 094 1841 or Ray 081 935 8088. Hope to see you there, Cheers & Good Golfing!

Sus on fire in early morning start

PSC golf from the Three Sisters Bar

The Three Sisters group hit the first tee box while it was still dark in an effort to get a start before our brothers from Korea got on the course.

Tuesday winner Sus Ige (left) with runner up Bill Thompson.

At 6:30 a.m., January 20, a goodly number of Three Sisters regulars were anxious and ready. The course was in good shape and the cloudy overhead made the play comfortable. There was even a spit or two of rain but not enough to cover the clubs. This early tee-off will continue as long as our brother golfers from Korea are on hand.
Back at Caddy Shack II the cards were collected and Sus Ige came through with a 43 points. Next was Bill Thompson with a 37, who was chased by Paul Kraft who had a 36.
As expected Herbie Ishinaga provided the usual snacks plus cheese-sausage flavored and spicy hot dogs.

It’s official - the Outback Golf Bar is on the move

Last week Capt’ Bob & General Jack completed negotiations to purchase what was formerly a Thai restaurant.

The new Outback Golf Bar coming soon.

Still on Siam Country Road and within 400 yards of the existing bar, work is already underway to provide additional staff accommodation, a 40 golf bag locker room and a freezer room as well as upgrading the kitchen and outside bar area.
The new Outback Golf Bar and Restaurant will be able to seat up to 80 people (both undercover and outside) and this pretty Thai style garden restaurant will blend well with the real Outback image as West meets East. The move is expected sometime towards the end of February; in the meantime it will be business as usual at the current premises, which is now on the market.

Jum Karagit is back

PSC golf from Lewiinski’s

Sunday, Jan. 17, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Seamus Cotter (11) 38pts
2nd Chaten Patel (13) 35pts
3rd Peter LeNoury (8) 35pts
B Flight
1st Jum Karagit (21) 38pts
2nd Colm Mullen (15) 35pts
3rd Mick Folan (15) 35pts
Near Pins: No 2 Frank Higgins, No 9 Nick Strasshine, No12 Frank Higgins, No16 Colin Davis.
Ground control to Captain Cotter, “Hey up he’s won again.” Is it the rise in rank to captain or maybe just good golf? Whatever it is the captain is on fire as his 38 points won him co man of the match and senior flight honors.

Jum Karagit.

It is always bad luck to lose out on a podium finish on a count back, but Paraic McManus and Nick ‘The Bucky boot boy’ did with 35 points; Chaten Patel was a judged second with Peter LeNoury filling the flight with the same 35 points.
News travels fast in the ‘Land of Smiles’, especially when one’s partner with all the luck of the Irish was having the time of his life. Jum was back in a flash to take over were ‘young’ Pat left off, posting a great 38 points for co match honors and so replenish ‘young’ Pat’s bank account.
At last Irelands ‘The Right Honorable’ Colum Mullen put together a score worth a mention. Colum garnered 35 points to take second spot on a count back over Mick Folan. ‘The Donkey’ was one shot off the pace along with ‘Mussels’ (new moniker pending), ‘The Don’ and ‘Skippy’.
Monday, Jan 18, Greenwood - Stableford
A Flight
1st Neil Bramley (8) 35pts
2nd Jukka Kuskela (14) 33pts
B Flight
1st Michael Lenihan (17) 32pts
2nd Geoff Kubas (17) 27pts
The A and C nines at Greenwood was the challenge for today’s comp, and lighting fast greens had the Lewiinski’s gang at sixes and sevens, hence the poor scores.
Best score of the day was the 35 points put together by Neil Bromley in the senior flight; Jukka Kuskela was two shots adrift in second
Michael Lenihan took the top rung in the junior flight with 32 points. The second place went to Geoff ‘Elvis’ Kubas, who is certainly on song, with 27 points.
Michael Lenihan, Peter Le Noury and Peter ‘The President’ shared the ‘2’s pot.
Wednesday, Jan 20, Bangpra - Stableford
A Flight
1st Frank McNamara (16) 36pts
2nd Don Lehmer (15) 33pts
3rd Peter Le Noury (8) 33pts
B Flight
1st Jim Elphick (24) 37pts
2nd Jum Karagit (21) 36pts
3rd Peter Hedenbergh (19) 33pts
Only one man managed to better par today, Jim Elphick with a match winning 37 points and the junior division title. With the greens fast and tricky (but not as fast as Greenwood two days before), Jim remembered to keep the ball below the hole, and so took the day’s honors. Jum Karagit for the second time in two games stood on the podium in second spot with an even par round. Peter Hedenbergh rounded out the flight with 33 points.
The senior flight was a nightmare for ‘The Donkey’ to work out as there was a six-way tie for second and third places. ‘The Don’ gained second and Peter Le Noury was third, the count back victims were ‘Daddy Long Legs’ Bonner, ‘The ladies man’ Jimmy Day, ‘young’ Pat Reagan and Mick Folan.
Spare a thought if you will for Tom Prosser, who had a wonderful day despite enduring sixteen no-scoring holes.
Pueschl Ayako, Peter Chadwick and Terry Mangan split the ‘2’s pot.
Friday, Jan 22, Treasure Hill - Stableford
A Flight
1stTore Eliassen (15) 39pts
2nd Tom McManus (10) 35pts
3rd Don Lehmer (15) 34pts
B Flight
1st Bobby Collis (17) 39pts
2nd Mark Bonner (17) 36pts
3rd Tom Gorey (17) 34pts
C Flight
1st Sic Crawley (19) 36pts
2nd Seesa Phompimon (34) 36pts
3rd Gebi Kindle (20) 33pts
A very large Lewiinski’s turn out dictated that three flights were needed for the ever-challenging Treasure Hill, scene for today’s comp.
Tore Eliassen proved to be a very popular winner in the top flight and gain co man of the match, posting a very impressive 39 points. Ireland’s Tom McManus, the man in form, was four shots back for second while ‘The Don’ himself closed the flight a shot further back.
Bobby Collis posted the same 39 points to win B Flight and co man of the match. Tom Mark ‘Mussels’ Bonner showed he has settled in with an even par round for second. Tom Gorey rounded out the flight, gaining a count back decision over Frank McNamara who had three costly no-scoring holes.
Sid Crawley did the biz in C Flight with a solid even par round but it needed a count back verdict over Seesa Phompimon. Gebi Kindle again needed the assistance of a count back decision to fill the flight; Tom Kelly being the unlucky player.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Slick greens at Greenwood take their toll

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Tuesday’s second, third and fourth, minus the ‘camera shy’ winner.

Derek Brook
Tuesday, Jan. 19, Greenwood A&B - Stableford
This is the course that is generally the most distant from Pattaya, if you disregard Bangpakong and Royal Lakeside. These days really they are all well within distance and a trip to Greenwood can be done in well under 50 minutes, indeed the other two mentioned take little more than the hour, so all these courses are a fine day out.
On this day I sat in with Dick Warberg and he went via the road past Laem Chabang and Burapha, quite a good way there and reasonably traffic free, and we seemed to get there in no time, then I woke up. The course on the day was quite busy, but we were away on time and as the first group we were round in about 4 hours, those behind in about 30 minutes more, pretty good.
On the day all the tees were back and many white tees were indeed on the blue, this with a strong wind made for a tough day so we knew scores would not be great. However, the course was in great condition, with green fairways, tough rough, and greens that were the best I have played for months. Indeed so fast were the greens that multiple putts were common place. The general consensus was that the course in this condition was as good any as we have played for a long time.
The scores were low but the winner was Gabriel Enright with 35 points ahead of Brian Gabe with 33 points on count back over John Marritt in third. In fourth was our new ‘vegetarian for the month’ Kevin Dunne with 30 points.
1st Gabriel Enright 35pts
2nd Brian Gabe 33pts
3rd John Marritt 33pts
4th Kevin Dunne 30pts
Near Pins: Gabriel Enright (2), Kamiichi, Richard Kubicki.
Long Putts: Dick Warberg, Neil Shaw.
Friday, Jan. 22, Rayong C.C. - Stableford
After hearing of a few groups getting bumped due to tour groups and a lack of golf carts being available when we last visited this venue, we returned here with a bit of reluctance. But with the PSC vouchers it is a great price and most of our golfers really like the course.
After reconfirming our tee time a couple of times prior to Friday and reserving an adequate number of golf carts we headed off from Bert’s after breakfast. Other than a bit of a delay on the first tee due to an earlier heavy rain shower that had delayed a few groups getting off on time, our groups were in golf carts, if they wanted, and on the course.
The course was in good condition although the greens were a bit slower than the last time we were here, and the fact that there is evidence of continuing work on and around the course bodes well for the future availability of this fine venue. The pace of play was leisurely to say the least due to the high season number of players ahead of us and we all finished in about 5 hours. All in all, not bad, and not one drop of rain fell during our round, unlike Pattaya which received quite a drenching we learned later.
Back at Tropical Bert’s with scores tallied and plates of chicken cashew tucked away, the results were announced and prizes handed out. Well done by all.
1st Tom Breslin 37pts,
2nd Derek Brook 36pts,
3rd Don Carmody 35pts,
4th Cees Hoeboer 32pts
Near Pins: Don Carmody (2), Derek Brook, Bob Benda.

IPGC Sunday Golf at Green Valley

Sunday, Jan. 17 - Stableford
Div.1
1st Dave Stockman 38pts
2nd Brian Wilkinson 35pts
3rd Steve Mulberry 35pts
4th Kjetil Hadland 33pts
Div. 2
1st Roar Berger 35pts
2nd Sean Hallahan 35pts
3rd Kevin Hamilton 34pts
4th Chris Knapp 33pts
Dave Stockman can be relied upon to play close to his 6 handicap and today was no exception as he stormed away with the 1st division. Brian Wilkinson, nursing painful fingers that adversely affect his grip, battled manfully to take second spot on count back from Steve Mulberry. Kjetil Hadland, who is used to playing in much colder conditions, returned a creditable 33 points to take the minor position.
Roar Berger had an outstanding round playing off his 26 handicap to take the 2nd division. Roar is a Pattaya regular from Norway and it was good to see him in the winner’s enclosure. Sean Hallahan was unlucky to be beaten on count back by the rampant Roar. Kevin Hamilton put in a steady performance to take third position.
‘2’s were in abundance again today with Dave Stockman, Steve Mulberry, Dave Mathers, Terry Kelly, and Ted Murphy sharing the spoils.
Sunday, Jan. 24 - Stableford
Div. 1
1st Phil Mitchell 37pts
2nd Brian Wilkinson 37pts
3rd Russell Exley 36pts
4th Joe McArdle 36pts
Div. 2
1st Damien Montague 35pts
2nd Joe Peters 35pts
3rd Chris Knapp 34pts
4th Kevin Hamilton 33pts
Another high turnout with 8 Tees being filled for the second consecutive week. We are blessed with a regular Irish contingent and they were in strong evidence today. The lovely Irish brogue and impish sense of fun so typical of the Irish people filled the air, reminiscent of the atmosphere at the Cheltenham Festival where Irish raiding parties regularly empty the bookmaker’s money satchels.
The 1st division saw a close contest where Phil Mitchell, playing off his 6 handicap, managed to see off Brian Wilkinson. It took a close count back to separate the two players. Russell Exley, steady as always, followed close behind in third, beating Joe McArdle on count back.
The 2nd division was taken by Damien Montague, fighting off fellow Irishman Joe Peters on count back in the final furlong. Chris Knapp was several lengths back in third place, just pipping Kevin Hamilton who was on the podium for the second successive week.
There was only a single ‘2’ today, bringing a smile to the face of Steve Mulberry.
The presentations were held at the Golf Centre Bar, Green Valley with amiable hosts John and Geoff, assisted by their attractive staff, taking excellent care of the many golfers.

Schramm comes in from the cold

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

It was the turn of Rayong C.C. on Sunday, January 17 to host the Pattaya Golf Society for another of their weekend stableford competitions and the course is still improving with every visit.
The substantial field was divided into two flights at 13 and under and good scores were at a premium as for the first time the group played the course in a strong wind. It made the back nine very long, especially the closing two holes.
In the second flight Phil “PJ” Mitchell stuttered to 29 points for a surprising third place finish whilst Martin Hennessy and Mr Len shared the win with 31 points each. It was unimpressive stuff on a windy day.
In the top flight Chris Voller loosened up in anticipation of receiving a new driver with 34 points and third place, closely following the 35 points score of Peter Ditz. The flight winner was Rick Schramm, newly returned from a wintry Canada, and the sun on his back brought out the best in his game and he took the flight with 36 well-earned points.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the two competition pots were suitably enhanced.
Albert Craigie, a thoroughly experienced Scottish golfer, took to the course immediately on his first visit, praising its fine layout, and proceeded to find only twenty-two points for his card. He also took to his first PGS ‘Booby Bevy’ back at Rabbi’s later! There is no better way of enjoying a Pattaya Sunday than golf with a large group of friends on a challenging course.
Taki takes Khao Kheow
Khao Kheow was immaculate when the Pattaya Golf Society played a stableford competition there on Tuesday, January 19. The fairways were excellent and the greens were running at a sporting 10.5 pace, putting touch and accuracy at a premium.
Full of anticipation the large field was divided into two competitive flights at fourteen and under and the round got underway immediately in a fresh breeze before the ladies of the Honda-PTT Challenge tour event on the A and C nines.
In the second flight Dave Cadwallader and Tom Atkins shared second place with splendidly crafted scores of 34 points, just one behind the in-form Ronnie Ramsay who continued his winning streak in style.
In the top flight Pete Sumner joined David Thomas (at last!) on 35 points for a share of third place but the honours of the day in the top flight went to Mike Earley and Kasuo Takimoto whose 37 points scores were the only sub par rounds of the competition. Taki’s contribution was also the day’s best gross of 77 shots.
David Thomas secured the day’s only birdie ‘2’ to increase his pocket money and he was left regretting the “blob” on C4 and his bogey-bogey finish on two relatively easy holes.
The Booby Bevy went to Yvonne Earley after her low score just pipped that of Booby Shirkey on count back. Scores apart it had been a wonderful day out at Khao Kheow, surely pre-eminent amongst the province’s courses at the moment for its condition and value for money for the IPGC groups.
Ramsay on the rampage
Escaping the stifle of Pattaya on Thursday, January 21, the Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Pattana to play a stableford competition on the B and C nines, which were well presented and Pattana’s efficient irrigation system had “greened up” the course and left little run.
The day was comfortably cool and the large field was divided into two flights at eighteen and under. Two members of the group were Brian and Kerry Eames, visiting on the anniversary of the sad passing of their brother Dougie, and the poignancy of the occasion was not lost by many of his friends.
In an extremely competitive top flight Larry Slattery, Kasuo Takimoto and Peter Duncan all posted scores of 37 points for a share of the honours and for Peter it was his first sub-par round in almost a year, ironically on the eve of his departure back to work.
The second flight saw Margaret Wilkinson take third place with 32 points, with Allen Dow coming second on 36. The flight winner, again, was Ronnie Ramsay, emulating his feats of the previous three rounds and the Scottish oil worker found his game was running like a well lubricated machine.
Margaret recorded the only second flight birdie ‘2’ whilst the top flight birdie boys were Rick Schramm, Ray Banks, Tony Atkins and Larry Slattery.
The Booby Bevy went to Mr Len for the shot of the day which epitomised his whole round when a prodigious three wood on the seventeenth peaked at 190 yards, struck a tree and rebounded back fully thirty yards into a hazard.
The final two groups finished the round in the rain which had hung around for an hour or so but it did nothing to spoil the day for the PGS at Pattana.

Duthie dominates at Green Valley

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Monday, Jan 18, Green Valley – Stableford
It was an overcast day upon arrival with a slight breeze and the conditions were perfect for golf. Having our tee-off on the tenth hole bang on schedule also kept everyone happy.

Tony Duthie relaxes after his 43 points at Green Valley.

Sang Ryves was one of those smiling most after winning the ladies competition with 33 points, with Miss Nang coming second on 29 and Miss Faa in third place two points behind her.
There were three divisions in the men’s competition today and with the highest score of the day, after a four over par front nine, Tony Duthie won the second division with 43 points. Cully Monks meanwhile beat Ben Findon on a back 3 count back of 6/4 to claim the runner up spot after they both came in with 36 points.
Jimmy Johnson won the third flight with 37 points, with Randy Flello coming second on 29 and Gordon Everingham beat ‘the old man’ on a count back of 14/13 on the back six for third after they both tied on 28 points.
Paul Brummie finished top of the first division with 35 points on count back over Paul Borg in second. Arvo Hillier took third place with 33 points.
Tony Duthie shared the ‘2’s dividends with Berny and the Near Pins went to (Div 1) Don Head x2, Raivo Velsberg and Harry Vincenzi, (Div 2) Berny x2, Tony Duthie and Randy Flello, and (Ladies) Mam Morel and Sang Ryves.
Wednesday, Jan. 20, Greenwood – Stableford
With a new agreed IPGC green fee reduction price this was our first visit here for probably at least nine months, and with the course condition the best we have seen for a long time, especially the greens, we have now booked for the next few months.
Billy Hewitt bounced back after no placings in the last few weeks to win division 1 with 36 points; Brian Beaupra was second with 34 and in third place came Barry Stirling with 33.
In the second tier the handicap cut was 15-19 today and Harry Cowling came in with 31 points to take first place. Meanwhile Keith Hector beat Harry Vincenzi into second place on a 15/14 back nine count back after they both finished with 30 points.
Barry Rawlinson topped out division 3 with 32 points followed by two players fighting for second place with 28 points, John Harvey beating Ray Atkinson on a 13/11 back nine count back.
Nar Hector won the ladies division with 25 points with yet again Miss Nang in the listings, taking second spot with 21 points.
Andres Kaar, playing off 12, birdied B2 and B5 to win both prizes in the first division ‘2’s competition and the Near Pins went to (Div 1.) Brian Beaupre, Bill Hewitt, Andres Karr and Les Utting, (Div 2.) Gordon Everingham and Randy Flello, and (Ladies) Valentina Hillier.
Friday, Jan 22, Eastern Star – Stableford
After nine holes of play the clouds thickened all around and the caddies were predicting heavy rain. The first group reached the 17th hole before the light rain started, luckily this was spasmodic over the next hour and didn’t affect any of our groups.
There were 7 ladies and 36 men out in the four divisions today.
Neville Scurell won the top flight honours with a well crafted 39 points. Don Head took second place 7 points behind while Bill Hewitt was a further point back in third.
The second tier saw a win for Bryan Rought with 34 points on a count back over Mike Theedham. Andy Oz filled out the podium in third place on 33 points.
Barry Rawlinson had a similar 33 points to win division 3 ahead of Jimmy Johnson (30pts) in second and David Phillips (29pts) in third.
Last but not least, Miss Nang put together a fine round of 38 points to secure victory in the Ladies flight ahead of Miss Faa (34pts) and Miss Nut (30pts).
There were no ‘2’s today and the Near Pins were claimed by (Div 1) Wilf Latham, John McLoone, Harry Riley and Timo, (Div 2) Randy Flello x2 and Andy Oz, and (Ladies) Miss Faa and Miss Nut.

‘Field of dreams’ becomes a reality for Huayyai kids

The children hoist a PSC flag and celebrate
the opening of their new football pitch.

Paul Strachan
In September 2009, I was approached by Ben Bryant a student from St Andrews International School regarding CAS (Creativity, Action & Service) which forms part of the International Baccalaureate programme he is following as part of his studies.
Ben’s passion is football and he wondered how I could help him marry: football, CAS and media into one project.

The waterlogged area prior to renovation.
My immediate response was to contact my colleague at the Pattaya Blatt, Elfi Seitz who works closely with the Child Protection and Development Center in Huayyai.
The Center currently takes care of 36 boys and girls who are 6-18 years of age. Most of them are street children and the victims of child abuse. They live at the centre and receive occupational training that supports their education.
Currently, 29 children are learning formal education, and the 7 remaining children are preparing for the next school semester.
I knew from TV interviews and articles in the Pattaya Mail the outstanding work that the Centers Director Supakorn Noja had achieved in the last few years so Ben, Elfi and I made the trip down to Huayyai to meet him and the children.
We were delighted to find that the kids had a makeshift football pitch, so the passion was there, only problem was, the pitch was full of holes, boulders and was not really a safe place for the kids to enjoy themselves.

Paul Strachan talks to Ben Bryant (left), one of the innovators of the project.
However the plot of land at the camp is quite extensive measuring approximately 11 Rai and 79 Wah2 and there was an area that, although waterlogged and uneven, was big enough to put a slightly reduced football pitch.
So now we had the location, we now needed the capital to make it happen. Elfi suggested that we contact the Pattaya Sports Club, so we invited the Charity Chairman William Macey to come and have a look at the project. William was very excited about the club being involved in an initiative that was sports based and he immediately got to work getting quotes on transforming this piece of waste ground into a playable surface.
Due to the high cost of watering grass, it was thought that this would not be the line to take so it was decided to use a mixture of earth and small stones, which would be hardy enough for running around but soft enough so that if the kids did take a tumble, the only thing that would be bruised would be their ego’s.
In the end it was the Huayyai municipality that impressed William the most and he put their quote to PSC committee.
As hoped for he got massive thumbs up from his colleagues and work commenced on the ground at Huayyai in late December 2009 under a budget of 150,000 baht.
It took 200 trucks filled with earth to bring up the level of the land which finally made an area measuring 34 by 48 metres.
So on the 17th of January there was the official opening of the playing field, replete with netted goal posts and white pitch markings.
On the day the Pattaya Sports Club handed out a huge assortment of polo & football shirts to the kids and they didn’t need a whistle to let them know that it was time to have some fun.
Ben Bryant was also there and joined the kids on the pitch and pledged that he would train the kids every Sunday afternoon to pass on his skills.
It was smiles all round, with the Pattaya Sports Club delighted that they were able to fund and support this project, with Ben having achieved his dream and of course most importantly the children who can use the pitch for exercise and fun as they start a new, happier chapter in their lives.
And I was overjoyed at being able to help facilitate a project such as this, using my contacts and experience I feel I have helped Ben, the PSC, the kids and hopefully you will agree, I got a good story out of it as well.

The new playing field gets some immediate use.

D: A1098                               D: KJ6

C: AQ732                              C: J1094

                        S: AKJ7

                        H: K

                        D: Q542

                        C: K865

The bidding was straightforward:

West    North     East        South

P           P              P              1C

P           1H           P              1S

P           3S            P              4S

All pass

The four of hearts was led.  The problem is how to make the contract.  Put yourself in South’s seat and decide on a plan before reading on.  It is tempting to take the ace and king of hearts and then try and cross-ruff the hand out without pulling trumps.  If you can make all nine trumps separately you will take eleven tricks for an overtrick, losing only two diamonds.  The difficulty is that you run the risk of being over-ruffed at some point.  Declarer tried this tempting line of play at the table and ended up going down one.
The alternative is to pull trumps first.  But, if you do this, how can you set up your hand?  You have eight potentially losing cards in the minors.  One can be thrown on the ace of hearts.  Even if you can pull trumps in only two rounds you will be left with only three trumps on board to ruff your losers in hand.  That still leaves four losers and you go one down.
The solution lies in dummy’s six card heart suit.  Dummy has no trump losers (when combined with the high trumps in hand), no club losers and only two diamond losers.  If you can play the heart suit for only one loser, then you have the contract made.  As the cards lie, trumps split.  Pull them in two rounds, ending on board.  Then play the ace of hearts and ruff a low heart.  Cross back to dummy by ruffing a club and ruff another low heart with your last trump.  Now dummy’s remaining hearts are good, and you lose only two diamonds.  Eleven tricks made.
Even if trumps are not quite so friendly and need three rounds to pull them, you will still make the contract after conceding a heart to set them up - you take five trump tricks, one heart ruff, two high hearts and two long hearts for ten tricks.  This is a dummy reverse, which is often useful, particularly when dummy has a long suit, but sometimes difficult to see.  All of us tend to focus on setting up our own hand, rather then dummy.  If your plan of play for this hand was a dummy reverse, congratulations!

‘Wood’ you believe it?

PSC golf from The Golf Club

Robert Newell
Monday, Jan 18, Green Valley - Stableford
1st Joe Stranks (8) 37pts
2nd Brian Wilkinson (16) 37pts
3rd John Dearden (19) 37pts
Following last weeks exhausting tour of Kanchanaburi and Bangkok it was to be expected today’s field would be smaller than normal. In fact more than one or two were absent through some kind of mystery illness, not entirely attributable to the excess alcohol intake either. The show must go on though and those guys who did play enjoyed a great day for golf, not too hot and a very pleasant breeze. The course, apparently, was in good condition albeit with some patchy areas and scoring was good but not great.
Steve ‘Rigsby’ Mulberry and ‘the font of all knowledge’ JJ Wright defied the fatigue factor, but only just: cards of 31 points fell below their normal standard. New boy Barry Wood posted a 33 off his 7 handicap and our recent Aussie imports, Steve Coghlan and Gary Emmett, seem to be now coming to grips with Thai golf. Both are continuing on an upward curve and, indeed, both carded 35 points.
Up in the top placings, amazingly all 3 of the winners returned scores of 37 points! Once more the comedy moment was produced by who else but ‘Weak-side’ Wilko (I make no apologies but I did predict this weeks ago).
As the cards came in ‘Weak-side’ knew he had beaten JTB on count back and proclaimed (as only he can), “Well if you can’t win fair, win on count back, ha ha.” Unfortunately for him Joe Stranks’ card, with a better back 9, had not yet come in. Brian was holding court (yawn) as it did, so I tapped him on the shoulder and said, “Brian what was that quote you made, I want to put it in the paper.” After repeating it he added, “I like that one myself”. To roars from the gang I said, “I’m glad about that mate because Joe got 22 on the back!” I swear his cigar bounced 2 feet off the floor!
Wednesday, Jan. 20, Phoenix - Stableford
1st Kevin Moraghan (12) 35pts
2nd Mark Wood (11) 35pts
Phoenix is doing itself no favours at the moment with its pricing structure. Due to a couple of late cry-offs we arrived with less than 20 players and were somewhat shocked to find, because of this, the green fee and caddy fee for walking was 1,450 baht. Add a buggy to this of 600 baht and its clear to see that at over 2,000 baht this course does not represent good value when compared to others around. On- course prices are costly too, with a can of Heineken at 90 baht. With your caddy tip and a few refreshments this venue is now an expensive day out and I think we have no choice but to limit the times we play here.
Back with us from the North Sea was the catalogue man himself Dale Shier. It was, however, a somewhat subdued reappearance though as the promised new 2010 collection was not aired due to a small sizing error. Apparently the services of one of our local tailors have been employed due to the fact Dale couldn’t get his trim, lithe body into the 38’s!
He also struggled with his new 8 handicap and put the blame firmly on the shoulders of the Aberdeen crooner Mark Wood. Mark was, on Dale’s last visit, quite vociferous about his handicap. How ironical then that Dale has come down while Mark has shot out to 11. He has to be the best 11 handicapper in Thailand!
Scoring was on the low side today; ‘boom boom’ McHugh showed some promise but finished with only 32. ‘The Mountie’ Sproxton started poorly but then strung together a long succession of pars for 34. That left 3 guys tied on 35 and battling for the 2 money places. Losing out was the unlucky Dave Mather with 17 on the back. Taking second with a 19 point back 9 was that man Mark Wood. His voice has not been heard for a while and, for a moment, deep in the night, we thought he was about to make a comeback. Alas, it wasn’t to be and it was left to Seamless and ‘Jacko’ Jackson to entertain the crowd at Mulligans. With a great 21 points on the back it was ‘gentleman’ Kevin Moraghan who took today’s top spot.
Friday, Jan. 22, Bangpra - Stableford
1st Mark Wood (11) 42pts
2nd Martin Solberg (18) 38pts
3rd Steve Mulberry (12) 36pts
4th Dave Mather (10) 35pts
5th Vic Hestor (14) 34pts
We had a great turn-out today but boy was it slow. Arriving late on, as we do to get the reduced green fee, we were greeted by the sight of massed coaches and mini-buses filling the car park. The collective sigh must have been audible back in Pattaya. Not only was it packed but our first tee time ended up about a half hour later than scheduled making it an extremely long day before we arrived back, in darkness I might add.
Apart from a few exceptions at the top end of the field, the course, again, gave very little away. It is possible to score well here but, more often than not, a score around par puts you in with a good chance. If your game is only slightly off then you will struggle, as I can testify to! The scores were generally bunched around the middle to high 20’s and low 30’s, just bog-standard stuff that should never get in the places.
With us today were one or two new boys, Dan Johnston, Brent Peacock and Graham Howard were amongst them as were the 3 new Welsh boys, Viv, Brian and David (‘there’s lovely isn’t it”) but, you must try harder guys!
Back on a fleeting visit and taking advantage of us having 5 places today was Vic Hestor. He fired a 34 and took the fifth placing. Up in the 3rd and 4th spots were those two constant sparring partners, not Abbott and Costello or Simon and Garfunkel, but Mather and Mulberry. Dave’s 35 got him 4th while ‘Rigsby’ notched 3rd with 36.
Now in second and unlucky, as any other day his 38 would easily be enough for top spot, was Martin Solberg. At present, it seems the words unlucky and Martin Solberg go quite well together, as the rather vivid, red scars above the eye seem to prove. Sixty- odd stitches, that’s no laughing matter but I had to chuckle over the thought of his attacker debating, “Hmm, shall I take the 9 iron for more loft or the utility for distance?” Tiger’s missus could learn a thing or two there.
This brings me on to today’s winner. If you look at the last but one paragraph in the previous report you’ll see that I’m quite a clairvoyant, not that I needed a crystal ball to predict this outcome (I’ve played too many times with this guy to know what he can do). Mark Wood, 42 points. Yes, that’s correct, no misprint. A full 4 shots better than a very good second place 38. A terrific round and I’ll say no more.
