PCEC members learn how to protect their homes
This week’s meeting of the Pattaya City Expats Club
(PCEC) on Sunday November 5 at Henry J. Bean’s included another speaker with
whom regular attendees will be very familiar. This week MC Philip Schwartz
introduced club chairman Andre Machielsen. Andre is managing director of
Master Safety Enterprises Ltd.
MC
Philip Schwartz addresses the PCEC
The topic of Andre’s talk was to provide information regarding home security
based upon his 18 years experience in the security industry and his time
spent as an off shore safety officer. The main theme was preventative
thinking and Andre provided many ways to implement this.
Pattaya City is experiencing an increasing number of burglaries and break
ins but the majority of domestic incidents occur during the daylight hours
when a house is left unoccupied for relatively short periods of time.
Opportunistic crimes are often the most common but these could easily be
prevented by a few simple precautions.
Doors, windows and roofs are the obvious means of entry so it is essential
that they are adequate. Interior doors only 40 mm thick should not be fitted
as an exterior door. Sliding doors must always be fitted on the inside
despite the recommendations of some installers.
Aluminium windows are available in 5 different qualities and consideration
should be given to replacing them. Open windows can be protected by window
grilles provided they are solidly constructed and an alternative escape
route is available in the event of fire.
Entry via the roof is another method of illicit entry. Access to the roof
should be made as difficult as possible plus roof tiles should be fixed into
position. Insulating foam spray can also stop entry by this route.
The house should look occupied when it is not. Simple precautions such as
main lighting controlled by a timer, leaving the TV on, placing a fan so
that it moves a curtain, can all be effective.
Finally burglar alarms can be the ultimate deterrent provided they are of a
sufficient standard and correctly installed. This is unlikely to be the
cheapest option but keeping an intruder outside of the home must be the
priority.
Further information was provided regarding club excursions. Max Rommel,
co-chairman and treasurer announced the final itinerary of the PCEC
organised 3 day excursion to Kanchanaburi, taking place November 21-23.
The regular Open Forum was then underway and this proved to be the usual
lively and entertaining session.

varied mid week activities, please see the Community Happenings section of

Will Habitu become a habit?
Miss Terry Diner
Thappraya Road Jomtien does it again! Another classy restaurant on the
section between Mata Hari at the top of the hill, down to Indian by Nature
half way down. This new venue is called Habitu Wine Bar and Grill and is in
Chateau Dale, underneath Cuvee and alongside Gian’s.
The
area’s newest classy restaurant, Habitu Wine Bar and Grill.
Opening night was certainly well attended (no free offer is ever
undersubscribed) and the expected 60 bottles of wine put aside for the
opening, turned into 120! At least this showed that the guests were happy to
stay. Or were very thirsty.
Several local restaurateurs were seen sampling the fare, with Fredi from
Bruno’s Restaurant and Wine Bar and Luca from Trattoria Toscana helping wet
the new baby’s head.
Rushing around, but looking very polished and Italian, was restaurant
manager Alessandro (call me Alex) Gregoris, who had been previously working
in Bangkok.
Billed as a wine bar and grill, the new restaurant features another of the
glass-walled walk-in wine cellars, with mainly Italian wines (would you
expect anything else) and a menu based around BBQ grills.
After a few weeks, so this new venue can settle in, the Dining Out team will
descend and review Habitu. Will it become a habit? We shall see.
