Siemens to build combined cycle power plant in Thailand

An international Siemens-led consortium has been awarded a major contract from the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) for the turnkey erection of a combined cycle power plant with a capacity of 700 megawatts (MW). Construction of the plant is scheduled to be completed by March 2009.
The new combined cycle power plant will be built at Bang Pakong some 60 kilometers southeast of Bangkok in Chachoengsao province. Due to growing demand from both industry and the private sector, the Thai government has pledged to increase the country’s generating capacity from approximately 31,000 megawatts (MW) to around 44,000 MW by the year 2015.
Siemens PG has been active in the Thai market for the past three decades and has been involved in several projects including the 2005 construction of a power plant in Songkhla with Japanese partners Marubeni. Commenting on the news, Lothar Herrmann, president and CEO of Siemens Ltd. Thailand said: “Songkhla and the new power plant in Bang Pakong will make an important contribution towards meeting the country’s growing power demand in both an economic and environmentally compatible manner.”
Siemens PG is one of the premier companies in the international power generation sector. In fiscal 2005 the company posted sales amounting to approximately EUR8.1 billion and received new orders totaling EUR11 billion.
