As part of its 10th anniversary celebrations, the Commerce Graduate School at Burapha University organized a business project contest with participants vying for the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Trophy.

Assistant Professor Dr. Suda Suwannapirom, director of the Commerce Graduate School at Burapha University.
The contest took place on May 6 in the conference room of the Commerce Building and was attended by potential masters degree students from many fields.

Jazz adds fizz to vineyard

The Silverlake vineyard 20 minutes south of Pattaya planted its vines some three years ago and its first bottling will take place at the end of the year.
It’s a beautiful, peaceful oasis set on rolling lands overlooked by the Buddha image, the golden outline of which can be seen for miles.

Saturday night May 6 was an evening of chilled out music and wine.
This was the perfect venue for some recent musical concerts, and on April 29 the mini festival kicked off with Koh Saxman. Later in the evening it was the turn of Bangkok Connection.
Last Saturday night (May 6) was another evening of chilled out music and wine with the energetic Infinity Jazz Band getting things going, and then another group of fine young Thai musicians: ETC.
It was a great night of music set in a tranquil atmosphere, which was very conducive for an evening of laid-back relaxation.

It was a great night of music set in a tranquil atmosphere.
The drink kept on flowing and with a variety of different delicacies on offer ensured the audience was well fed and watered.
A purpose built amphitheatre offered a great view of the bands and the rai upon rai of grapes clinging to their vines in the cooling night.
Jazz aficionados the world over demand high quality acoustics, a never-ending supply of alcohol and of course a high caliber; the Silverlake Vineyard delivers on all these counts and makes the upcoming concert on June 3 with Bill Brufords Earthworks a definite date for the diary, with a promise of more music later in the year.

Sheer pleasure at the Sheraton

Gillian Thom
The view from the Infinity Restaurant at the Sheraton Pattaya across to Koh Larn and Koh Pi is breathtaking, and it must be hard to beat the pleasure of taking luncheon at this elegant resort, so the recent luncheon meeting of the Pattaya International Ladies Club combined both.

Kavita Singh, Roseanne Diamente and Pauline Morrison try their hands at krathong making.
Sixty ladies signed up eagerly for the first PILC luncheon to be held at the hotel, following a very successful coffee morning there last year, and had a lovely event, generously hosted and very well organized by General Manager David Cuddon and his team. The restaurant is not huge, so not all the members were able to sign up, but hopefully we will have another event in the future, and early bookings are recommended.
Gillian Thom, as president, made some announcements to bring members up to date with events and remind them of some important forthcoming dates for their diaries. She also asked for some assistance in distributing the Living in Pattaya and Rayong Guide and was delighted to have Sylvia Berra volunteer her services. Although the guide is now in need of an update, it is still a popular seller at local bookstalls, and contributes a healthy amount of cash to put towards the charitable ventures of the group.
Then on to lunch - a delicious spread accompanied by a glass of fine white wine. As usual, the noise level rose a few decibels while we chatted to friends old and new, and after the dessert course, the ladies adjourned to the lower level for a demonstration of krathong making. It was fascinating to see the way the leaves are folded and flowers inserted for this emblem of Loy Krathong, and the staff on hand were very supportive of the ladies’ efforts!
The raffle was also very well supported, with over THB 10,000 being raised to go towards the monthly parties held for the ladies at the Garonyawet Home – and some generous prizes being donated by the Sheraton Resort, and the Marriot Resort & Spa.
PILC meets every month on the first Tuesday for lunch, and the third Tuesday for coffee. There is also a newcomer’s Coffee Morning, held at Casa Pascal’s Restaurant, under the generous patronage of Kim and Pascal Schnyder, which is a perfect introduction to anyone new to the area. If you are interested in finding out more about the club, please contact Gillian Thom, president, on 01-7626003 or 038-756923, Nancy Bradburn, vice-president on 07-8129149 or 038-731108 or e-mail [email protected].

Sales between January to March this year have increased by 5% compared to January to March last year, and out of all 10 branches in Pattaya and Bangkok, the Pattaya and Sukhumvit branches rate number 1 and 2 in sales of wine.
Foodland’s master butcher, Christian Kratzer was on hand to promote the numerous sumptuous sausages, salami, fish products, cooked ham, pate and terrines, salads, pickles, and the wide selection of oven fresh bakery products.
Among the guests were many restaurateurs: Ib and Kanikar Ottesen from the Jomtien Boat House, in Pattaya, Mr Pop from Pop Pub in Sriracha, Walter Thenisch, the Royal Cliff’s executive chef and his wife Oi who had come to enjoy the festival and view all the wines on special offer. A lucky draw had been organized for any guests who spent 450 baht on wine.
The evening truly was a fantastic gourmet event with no expenses spared, not to be forgotten by the crowds of Foodland customers who were able to browse from table to table sampling wine and tasting all the sumptuous fair prepared. Obituary: Hans Kallen

Sue K.
On Saturday, 13 May 2006 the Buddhist funeral of Hans Kallen took place at Wat Chaimongkol, South Pattaya. Many of Hans’s friends joined in the ceremony to bid their last goodbyes.
Hans Kallen was born December 21, 1939 in Switzerland, and completed most of his schooling there before going on to study and work in the chemical industry in Basle. However, his heart wasn’t in chemical work, and eventually music took over his life.
Hans played in the Dixieland band in Bangkok, then at the Amari and Henry J Beans in 1998. He later became drummer for the Jazz Pit Band. He lived in Thailand with his wife, Brigitte and 2 children.

Hans Kallen
1939 - 2006

Hans Kallen contracted Septicemia disease and finally passed away on May 10, 2006 at Sirikit Hospital, Sattahip.
Words from his friends that loved him dearly:
“People walk in and out of our lives. There are a few who before a single word is spoken we know we can trust and expose to without fear of being rejected. That’s how we know Hans Kallen. Knowing him as a friend meant a great deal to us and I’m sure it meant the same to those he came in contact with. Hans was a person whose aura was one which everyone would remember. He was a good person both inside and outside with a special knack in painting, along with his being a good drummer. He played with the East Coast Band at Delaney’s (now called Shenanigans) with fun-filled memories. Then again he turned up to play with the Jazz Pit Band at Jazz Pit PIC Kitchen. It is such a sad thing to know that he’s gone now. Losing someone whose heart and music had contributed greatly in the community is more than heartbreaking. But the jazz sound of his drum sticks will remain in each one’s heart forever, to those who believe in him and have known him to be a man of valor and strength despite the hurt and fears he went through during his last remaining days. To you Hans, we love and keep you dearly in our hearts and minds.”
