Dusit’s Saturday BBQ

The perfect place to be a perfect pig

by Miss Terry Diner

The Dusit Resort in North Pattaya is certainly offering much for those who like dining out in Pattaya. From the ‘Italianesque’ The Bay, and the Chinese-style The Peak, they already have two first class outlets. But we had not tried the ‘new’ Dusit Resort Saturday BBQ, and Resident Manager Stefan Heintze insisted we correct this state of affairs. On offer, according to Stefan, was a Saturday BBQ, the like of which we had not seen before.

The venue for the Saturday BBQ is around the pool on the Dusit Point, a site with superb ambience that I have mentioned before when we reviewed The Bay restaurant previously. The BBQ is held between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. and we had booked for 8 p.m. As we turned the corner around The Bay we were met by the sight of a sea of tables running from the BBQ area, right the way to the tip of the Dusit Point. And every table was full! Literally no spare places and around 300 people happily eating.
We settled in to our reserved table, enjoying the warm sea breezes and took in the surroundings. A live two man group was supplying easy listening music, while Stefan supplied us with an ‘easy-drinking’ Dusit Resort wine!
It was time to see just what was on offer, and let me assure you, it will take you many minutes to walk around the various stations, and even longer to take in the enormous variety. The Dusit’s Executive Chef Hans-Peter Held has produced the largest choice I have ever seen, even greater than the famed BBQ’s in Bangkok.
As well as the expected BBQ items, there are special sections with Japanese, Thai, Indian, Italian and Chinese. There are live cooking stations where delights such as tempura prawns, Indian vegetable pakoras, suckling pig and flamed beef tenderloin are prepared to your order.

And that was just outside. Inside The Bay there are many cold stations with another amazing range of choices. The mind boggles at what you should try first! Taking a small plate and trying not to be greedy, I began with some cold antipasti items such as Parma ham, Coppa, air dried beef, south Tyrol bacon, Paris ham and assorted pickles, but as soon as I had filled my plate I uttered the most unladylike words, “Oh bugger!” I had just spied the Japanese salmon and wasabe. I made a quick note to return as I wanted some of that too.
The service personnel were doing a marvelous job looking after 300 guests (and the Dining Out reviewers), and after a few digestive moments I returned, worrying that my salmon might no longer be available. My fears were groundless, as there seemed to be a never-exhausting supply of fresh food coming from the Dusit kitchens. Once again, I had no sooner loaded my plate with salmon when I saw the fresh oysters, complete with western and Thai condiments. I shall spare you the epithet, but will admit to returning yet again to snare some oysters for the evening. And I had not yet got into the hot food!
From then on, I made a right proper pig of myself with BBQ items, even unashamedly finishing with pralines, cheeses and ice cream.
The Dusit Resort’s Saturday BBQ costs B. 960++ per person and half price for children 5-12 years old. It is a bargain at those prices. The range of food is just incredible, with well over 100 items, and the food is fresh. There were five different hams, 11 different BBQ grill items, five different Japanese prepared fish items – the list seemed endless. It would be impossible to sample a little of everything in one evening.
For us, it was a spectacular evening, and fully justified Stefan Heintze’s enthusiasm for their Saturday evening gourmet BBQ. That enthusiasm is now echoed by the Dining Out team as well. Highly recommended – not to be missed.
