A large field plays “Misty’s” for the Care for Kids

Misty’s Third Annual Charity Open 2005

It was clear from the size of Friday’s field, 131 players strong, that Misty’s Annual Charity Open has now etched its name onto the list of premier Pattaya tournaments. The innovations made by owner Andy James each year make the event a continuum of interest, and coupled with his choice of a superb venue, Burapha, its popularity can only grow. Of course, its association with Care for Kids only further embellishes its popularity. And although the final accounting will be undertaken this week and all the satang will be counted, Andy will proudly hand over a check to the Care for Kids fund of at least 150,000 baht.

Lewis ‘Woody’ Underwood presents a certificate of appreciation to Andy for Misty’s contribution to this year’s Care for Kids charity drive. The tournament raised approximately 150,000 baht.

A word on the course, Burapha’s American Wood and British Link, begins with kudos and thanks to General Manager Michael Mesommont and his capable top man, Patrick. As with any organization, there are many others who contributed and such was the case as cart boys, caddies, forecaddies, greens keepers, clubhouse staff, etc. all pitched in. Thanks to all of them, they made a great day for all as the course presentation and the service was impeccable.

The shotgun blast was pre-empted by a three-man parachute jump, all of who landed safely on the course to fire off a day of golf for kids.

The format was, as it has been since Andy’s brain fostered the tournament three years ago, a 4-person scramble. Handicaps were based on the lesser of (a) one-tenth of the sum of the team’s handicaps and (b) the handicap of the team’s best player. Several teams lost mates due to the prior evening’s party injuries and their handicaps were adjusted to compensate. When the registration dust settled 34 teams had set off for a shotgun start. The shotgun blast was pre-empted by a three-man parachute jump, choreographed by Belgian Patrick, coming in over the course, over the bonnet of Neilsen’s BMW’s displayed new 3-Series motorcar and landing on the course infield. After that, a shotgun blast seemed anti-climatic.

Russell White, Steve Hovi, Steve Staley, Chris Oxley, aka Cuel and Unusual collects their First Runners-up trophies from Andy on stage at Misty’s.

The players were treated to the standard type of technical prize distractions such as Near Pins (The Classroom), Long Drives (Shenanigan’s), and Long Putts (Lolitas) which were embellished by the overt generousness of their respective sponsors’ prizes. In a day of uniqueness, two BMW motorbikes were offered as hole-in-one prizes. Since the insurance was already paid, the sponsors of the two holes, Randy Essary of Morning Cloud and Andy of Misty’s were rooting hard for a winner, but alas, the 1 million baht prizes went unclaimed.

The year’s champions, The Classroom with Mike Craighead, Julian Clarke, Jim Munns, and Peter Henshaw returned 57.5, winning on countback over C & U.

Randy Essary greeted players as they crossed from one nine to another with Italian sausage dogs and drink for their grateful consumption. Several holes later the players were provided a variety of complimentary beers, courtesy of Foster’s Thailand.

The teams made good time around the A and B courses which showed there teeth with a stiff mid-day breeze on an otherwise fine day. The scores came in and the seasoned local players started taking the better of it. When all cards were collected, six were sub net 60. The Birdies Boys (Roy Thornton, Richard Holmes, Barry Traynor and Glynn Nicholas) left a couple of putts short, either of which would have given them the whole enchilada, but that is the way with golf and their 58.0, while superb, was only good for Second Runner-Up.

Two of the Birdie Boys remained long enough to collect their third place winnings from Andy James (center). The team consisting of Roy Thornton, Richard Holmes, Barry Traynor and Glynn Nicholas returned at net 58.0 for their place on the podium.

After all the math and 18 holes of struggle it was remarkable that two teams, Cuel and Unusual and The Classroom, were knotted at 57.5 each. C&U had 6.5 handicap and The Classroom only 5.5 however the latter shot 31 on the back nine to the former’s 33. When all the countin’ was done, Cuel and Unusual (Russell White, Steve Hovi, Steve Staley, Chris Oxley) was holding the First Runner-up and The Classroom (Mike Craighead, Julian Clarke, Jim Munns, and Peter Henshaw) held the Championship. It should be noted that the oldest young man on The Classroom side, and perhaps in the tournament, Mike “The Mechanic” Craighead, has now been on the winning side in two consecutive Misty’s Opens. Any three players who are contemplating playing next year, and there are many, bring your CV’s for Mike’s review, that is, if you need a fourth and you want to win!

Misty’s girls made a hot day hotter by helping out at registration team photos and post tourney ogling.

The players retired to Misty’s for a sumptuous feast sponsored by Belgian Patrick’s Restaurant and Palmer’s. Everyone ate and drink until they were content and cuddled the lovely ladies of Misty’s as a fine party, interspersed with raffle prizes, carried on until the wee hours. A brand new step-thru was raffled of as were a number of vouchers from the vast group of sponsors.

One of the two BMW motorcycles on offer as hole-in-one prizes, each valued at over 1 million baht. Despite much encouragement, no-one managed a hole-in-one to claim either of the bikes.

To make this tournament a success for the Kids required funds over and above those generated by the tournament entry cost alone. Special thanks to the contributions of Randy Esary’s Morning Cloud, Randy Nielsen of Neilsen BMW, Gary of Foster’s Beer, Peter of Suzie Wong’s A-Go-Go, Andy of Electric Blue - BKK & Patatya, Tim and Darrel of the Dollhouse- BKK & Patatya, Bruno’s, Mick O’Brian of Moonlight, Star and Too’s Bars, The Jesters, Dudley of The Penthouse Hotel and The Kitten Club, Peter of the Classroom, Simon of Shenanigan’s and Gary of Lolita’s and Peter Yung of Boswell Golf Int’l. Also thanks for the raffle prizes provided by The Blue Parrot, The Shamrock Bar and Lewiinski’s.

While thanks are being handed out, Manager Tim at Misty’s deserves a hand, as do the girls who made a hot day hotter by helping out at registration, team photos, and post tourney banality.

See ya next year, and sign up early, as spots will be tough to come by. I know of 131 players who are coming back.

Championship Team: The Classroom – Mike Craighead, Julian Clarke, Jim Munns, and Peter Henshaw – 57.5. 1st Runner-up: Cuel and Unusual – Russell White, Steve Hovi, Steve Staley, Chris Oxley – 57.5. 2nd Runner-up: Birdie Boys – Roy Thornton, Richard Holmes, Barry Traynor and Glynn Nicholas– 58.0. Future tennis stars turn out for 4th Annual Junior Tennis Tournament

Ariyawat Nuamsawat

The Royal Cliff Beach Resort successfully hosted its 4th Annual Junior Tennis Championships drawing a field of over 200 girls and boys aged 8 to 16 years and a crowd of suitably impressed spectators.

Vivat wins Platu Yachting Nationals at Ocean Marina

In blustery conditions, Vivat Poontat skippering Platu 116 with an all-Thai crew came through to win the Platu National Title held off Ocean Marina last week. With winds gusting up to over 30 knots at times he managed to upstage the high-performing combination of Neil Semple and Morten Jacobsen in Platu 103. Third was Platu 132 skippered by Alex Skaria.

The Championship was held over three days. Friday started with south-westerly winds of around 25 knots, and the course was changed from a long-distance race to two windward returns. Saturday’s racing started with a long-distance course, and when the starting signal sounded at 11 a.m., the wind was up over a true 30 knots, recorded by Race Officer Bill Gasson on the committee boat.

The Ocean Marina Keel Boat fleet was running another regatta simultaneously. None of them managed to finish the Sunday race, due to the rough conditions. David Bell’s Pink Pussy Cat took on a considerable amount of water through a design fault with the bowsprit fitting, and came close to sinking. Skipper John Vause of Buzz 8 pulled out of the race to stand by and assist. C U Later, the Thompson 6.5 was overpowered by the conditions and decided to retire also.

In the keel boat division, the placings on points were: Buzz 8, John Vause, 1st: Pink Pussy Cat, David Bell, 2nd: Hi Jinks, Pascal Leray, 3rd.

VIPs hammer Headmen in football friendly

Ariyawat Nuamsawat

The Banglamung VIP team toppled the Sub-district and Village Headmen team 3-0 in a football friendly held at the Nongprue field on August 10. The special match was part of the Banglamung Sub-district and Village Headmen Day.

The overall score was not as important as creating unity between administrators during the friendly match, albeit well played from both sides.

The VIP team led by Pisai Phanomwan Na Ayuthaya, city councilor took to the field against the Headmen led by Worawit Saisuthapol, Banglamung district chief. Both teams played hard leaving the score nil-nil at half time.

After the break, the VIPs regained their second wind leaving the Headmen in their wake and taking three quick goals in succession to win the match.

After the game, both sides heartily celebrated the day with a party at the Nongprue Sub-district annex.

Ladies’ Day at Green Valley

IPGC Pattaya golf society at the OK Corral

On Tuesday, August 16 a large group of golfers from the Pattaya Golf Society left the OK Corral on a hot day to travel to Green Valley for a stableford event, with the field playing in two flights, the cut coming at twenty and under. Such is the popularity of the course that two fine lady golfers were tempted from distractions elsewhere to join the competition and they were to feature well in the tournament. A full course was well prepared with slick greens adding to the challenge of the day, as did the constant wind which made the day comfortable but “lengthened” the course considerably. In a tight division one Bill Hewitt’s long game proved the saviour of his round as his putting continued to give him problems but he managed to post a creditable score of 35 points for third place. One shot ahead was local member Jan Eriksen whose course experience helped him to shoot level par 36 points giving him a share of the top spot with the popular lady golfer Saranya Chaiyanont. Ya’s recent first-ever trip to England had seen her achieve her second career hole-in-one and her game was still on fire at Green Valley! In the second flight George Meigh, currently very much in form, posted 30 points to share third place with Rob Dolan, with Les Winch doing better with 34 points, but the star of the division was diminutive Toy Theobald, playing with a smile and the measure of her game was such that she posted the only sub-par round of the day, and excellent haul of 37 points. By any standards it was a fine display of golf from the relative rookie. The day’s only birdie two was recorded by Les Winch on the short par-three eighth but his reluctance to take part in the two’s subplot was rewarded with the Booby Bevy back at the OK Corral. It had been another memorable golfing day with the PGS and the ladies had proved to be the worthy winners.

Two tie at the top at Ban Chang

On Thursday, August 18, the Pattaya Golf Society took advantage of the club’s generous low season discount scheme to visit the popular Century Ban Chang course for their weekly medal event and found an empty course in fine condition, thus setting the stage for a good tournament. The OK Corral gave its usual warm welcome to Chaten Patel and Paul Brett and, whilst the latter was a novice Chaten certainly showed his golfing pedigree by posting a fine one-under par score of net 71 to share the lead with old hand Ken Graham, for whom the month has certainly been profitable. Joint ‘Player of the Month’ leader Bill Hewitt only just failed to take third place with his 74, being usurped by an excellent round of gross 79, net 73, by Mikael Andersson. Mikael’s eagle three on the long par-five fourth was the highlight of the day and his golf continues to be formidable. Some of the pin positions offered a challenge and once again birdie two’s were absent but Len Jones, on the seventeenth green in regulation, proceeded to take six putts to find the hole. Three times the ball ended back at his feet as he attempted a thirty foot uphill putt, and his fourth departed the green behind the hole. Heineken time for Len! Congratulations to all players for contributing to yet another very pleasant day’s golf with the Pattaya Golf Society.

Tony Duth it at last!

Golf from The Caddy Shack

Tuesday, August 16 had the very popular Noble Pace host a medal competition over the B and C courses. In perfect golfing condition good scores were the order of the day. Division 2 had Rob Heath, on Net 73, Mr. Loy level par and James White winning with Net 62. Division one saw a 3 way tie on level par between Brian Jacks, Neil Hughes and Russell Benson, the winner was Sam Fitzsimmons with a fine 69. The two’s were shared by Ben Findon, Aussie Bob (one) and John Mcloone. The bananas went to Shaun Donavon for his accuracy in throwing golf clubs on the golf course. The lucky draw was won by Andy Lee.

Thursday 18th was a visit to Eastern Star for a stableford competition on a very windy day. Another 20 plus golfers made the journey and the cut was made at 18 and under, division one had Glyn Evans on 34 points winning from Matt Anderson on 31 points and Mark Joshua in 3rd place on 29 points. Division two had T.J Trella on the podium for the 1st time in 3rd place with 33 points, Keith Taylor in second place with 34 points, Tony Duthie at last finding his form with a creditable 39 points to take 1st place. The two’s were shared between Tony Duthie and Glyn Evans. The Bananas were awarded to Les Hall for being so inebriated the night before that he actually fell asleep on the 17th tee. The complimentary Sunday lunch was won by Eddie Lee on his first visit to the Caddy Shack. For any new or old golfers just turn up at the Caddy Shack on a Tuesday or Thursday and transport and golf is arranged the Caddy Shack is situated on soi 17 on the same road as the Harley Bar.

Peter Aitcheson & BJ Smith share a memorable week

IPGC golf from The Haven

Monday August 15
Burapha, C & D
Stableford

1st BJ Smith, 39 points
2nd John Mabry, 37 points
3rd Barry Traynor, 36 points

A good turnout was well rewarded with the pleasure of playing the beautifully prepared C & D course the day following the Singha Tour “Cotto” Open. Thanks to the slick greens that ran perfectly “true” putting became a delight, proving one had the line correct! Generally scores were good and BJ shot a gross 90 for his best score this year and comfortably took the honors from John (playing with hired clubs) and Barry Traynor, who showed a nice return to form. The surprise of the day came from newcomer Jeff Troyer, who showed why he was once a US javelin champion by easily beating Roy Thornton’s long standing record for throwing an iron by at least 60 yards... made Roy feel like little Bo Peep! With the greens playing so true it was probably surprising there were only three 2s carded on the day, Rick Holmes & Mam Trayling sharing division 1 pool, whilst Peter Aitcheson made his first ever birdie 2 to scoop the division 2 pot! Prior to the presentation, Richard Livingston, the resident PGA professional, welcomed Jeff Troyer and welcomed back Mashi Kaneta, John Mabry and Fred Ewins.

Wednesday August 17
Phoenix Lakes/Ocean
Medal

1st Glyn Nicholas, net 70
2nd Peter Aitcheson, net 71
3rd B J Smith, net 72

As usual the course was in excellent condition even though the greens on Ocean were very slow and bumpy and the surprisingly low turnout enjoyed a beautiful day’s golf in lovely conditions. Peter Aitcheson, having made his first ever 2 on Monday shot a superb 71 net to break another record, his first ever appearance on the podium! Had Glyn not regained some form, he may well have enjoyed his first win! BJ continued where he left off on Monday and completed the podium places, just pipping Brian Kelly on countback, whose 72 included a 9 thanks to Phoenix’s over-sanded bunkers. Why the management do not remove a few tons of sand for future use, saving themselves a great deal of money and providing golfers with proper bunker hazards remains a complete mystery. Having lost out on the club throwing record on Monday, Roy regained the club breaking record by smashing his 5 wood into the ground when his caddie laughed as his ball disappeared into yet another over sanded bunker. Poor Roy, yes we must agree, caddies should not laugh at our misfortunes... bet she received a small tip! Little Bo Peep indeed! In the 2s competition, Glyn Nicholas took division 1 pot, whilst Roy made the only 2 in division 2 that will no doubt go part way to the cost of re-shafting his 5 wood! Back at the Haven, Richard Livingston welcomed back Tom Gingerich and Bruce Lawrence.

Friday August 19
Noble Place C & B
Stableford

1st Tony Quaid, 42 points
2nd Peter Emslie, 39 points
3rd Brian Kelly, 36 points

Having received news of the improved 331 road condition, a small group made the “long” journey to Noble Place, which for most was the first trip there this year. Not only was the course in great condition, but so was the road! Apart from a small 30 yard stretch the drive was very comfortable and very much quicker than previously. Those “regulars” away playing in Misty’s four man scramble missed a treat and a real bargain, just 150 baht green fee! With the tees well forward on “C” course, scores were expected to be low, yet it was “B” course that most players destroyed! The man from Cork, Tony Quaid, shot an amazing 43 gross on B for 25 points and Slammer also managed a 40 gross to net 22 points. That turned out to be the order in which they finished carding 42 points and 39 points respectively. Brian once again came home with an honest 36 points to complete the podium places, this time just spoiling BJ’s week by a point. Nevertheless, it must have been great for BJ to have his daughter supporting him all week and everyone has enjoyed seeing her on the courses! As no 2s were recorded on the day, there will be rollovers in both divisions at Green Valley on Monday. Prior to the presentation, Richard Livingston, welcomed Mikael Innala and bade a fond farewell to Brian Kelly who is off to the Channel Islands to report on the Alderney Golf Club’s Seniors Open.

Nice guys don’t always finish last

IPGC golf from Lewiinski’s  Tuesday August 9 Phoenix Stableford

Sunday August14
Green Valley, White Tees
Monthly Medal

1st A Flight: Clive Bruce, net 69
2nd A Flight: Brian Holden, net 69
3rd A Flight: Jim Wickstrom, net 71
1st B Flight: Robbie Bennett, net 67 (Monthly Medal Winner)
2nd B Flight: Colin Davis, net 68
3rd B Flight: Jan Eriksen, net 71
1st C Flight: Poo Supaporn, net 67 (Monthly Medal Qualifier)
2nd C Flight: Nat Meesuk, net 69
3rd C Flight: Noy Pimmoen, net 69
Near Pins: #5 Ken Kutzing; #16 “Big Dan” MacLean

Robbie Bennett, whom this column has cited as a “Nice Guy” several times previously, won B Flight, but more importantly took home the Silver encrusted Tankard emblematic of the Monthly Medal, which in this case was for August. To do so Robbie had to first shoot a dazzling 67 and then win a count back over the GM’s missus.’ No small undertaking that. But how, you might query, can a fella who unchilvalrously wrenched the tankard from a “Young Damsel” (which the GM routinely shortens to “Damn You”) still deserve the moniker “Nice Guy”. Well certainly Robbie’s Canadian roots have much to do with that. Hailing form the frozen tundra of British Columbia, Robbie has an almost placid, you might say hypothermic, demeanor. As to relegating a young Thai peasant girl to near anonymity, that is also culturally excusable. Untouched, due to remoteness, from the age of chivalry, Canadians do most of their bonding with dogs, drinking with the males and what they do with the females this scribe will leave to your imagination and the internet (suffice to say they call the female dogs “bitches”). That is why rubbing noses with their human female counterparts is quite enough.

Moving on to the balance of B Flight, found the Donkey but a shot adrift at 68 with Jan Eriksen holding down the last step, thanks to a count back over newly arrived Peter Henshaw.

It is, by this paragraph, common knowledge that Ms. Poo won her C Flight with her net 67, a score which will qualify her to join Robbie in the year end Gold Medal Competition. Poo led a veritable ERA movement as the Nat(ural) and Noy Pimmoen, thanks to a count back over Mike the Mechanic, rounded (?) out the Flight. That reminds this Scribe of an old joke: Did you hear the one about the blind man that walked by the C Flight victory stand and after doffing his hat said ....

With this much humor abounding it is hard to believe there is anything left for the premier Flight. Old friend Clive Bruce, from the land of two first names, topped the accomplished lot, followed by that Demon Deacon, Brian Holden, and yet another Canuck, Jimmy Wickstrom. It was big hittin’ Nicky Strasshine’s hard luck to be locked up with Jimmy W, at net 71 on a day the count back coin always landed with the loonie up.

Tuesday, August 16
Laem Chabang, B & C
Blue or White Tees
Stroke/Medal

1st Blue Flight: John Emmerson, net 76
2nd Blue Flight: Peter Henshaw, net 77
3rd Blue Flight: Brian Holden, net 78
1st White Flight: Stephen Byrne, net 69
2nd White Flight: Rick Sharp, net 72

There was nothing pretty about the Blue Bombers this Tuesday. The ol’ Silver Back started a one stroke staircase with a ... 76, followed by a name that will appear on these papyrus sheets several times this edition, Irish Peter Henshaw, and another name from Sunday, Brian Holden. In the Bomber’s defense, they were tested by the toughest duo of the Laem Chabang trio.

In the less well attended White Flight, Stephen Byrne made the most of his getaway day by knocking off a net 69, whilst The Hermit took the silver. It is hardly notable, but since the pickings are slim, Tuesday’s comp was the only one on the week without a count back.

Wednesday August 17
Mountain Shadow
Blue Tees
Stableford

1st Vic Hester, 37 pts
2nd Brian Holden, 36 pts
3rd John Emmerson, 36 pts
4th Eddie Blackwell, 34 pts

A perennial Society favorite, Mountain Shadow, was the site of Wednesday’s outing. Victor “The Inflictor” was true to his handle as he made his 37 points stand up for victory. Brian Holden and Johnny Emmerson made it three podium stands in as many days as they took second and third after a count back untangled their 36 points. Similar calculations were put to Eddie Blackwell’s and Julian Clarke’s 34’s, with the Beau Brummel coming out looking quite elegant.

Friday August 19
Siam C.C.
White Tees
Stroke/Medal

1st A Flight: Rob Dolon, net 71
2nd A Flight: Sid Ottaway, net 72
3rd A Flight: Apple Jitchana, net 73

A somewhat smaller than usual Friday field was expected due to competition from Misty’s Charity Open and a Green Valley’s Member’s tournament, Rob Dolon, playing his first competition with the Society, took the day on the venerable old lady of Siam, with Sid, the Straw Man of Oz, just a shot back at net level par. Apple Jitchana edged a resurgent Terry Phur on count back to take the bronze.

Moonshine again provide the surprise of the week

Jomtien 8 Ball Pool League

Even with their names already on the League Champion’s trophy San Snack Bar haven’t slowed down. The winning streak lengthened to 16 after their visit to Bolaget. The score might have looked a little more respectable for the home team had they not put together a series of match losing 8-ball fouls allowing SSB to coast home 7-2.

In the race for second place, Country Club saw their hopes dashed by going down 7-2 for the second week in a row; this time to visitors Simple Simon. There is still an outside chance for a second place tie but Simple Simon’s superior game difference should see them through.

Rose & Thistle’s visions of repeating last season’s second placing vanished at Moonshine – the home team again providing the surprise of the week. With the scores tied after the singles and the first two doubles shared, it was all on the final game with Moonshine prevailing to take the points with the 5-4 score. Moonshine have won only a modest six matches this season but three of them have come in the last four weeks.

Meanwhile, Lucky Bar kept themselves in the top half of the table with a comfortable 6-3 home win against Twilight Zone; Woaw’s Pub had the bye, and the Hide-A-Way v Paweena’s match was postponed until Sunday.

Next week’s match of the day should see Simple Simon extend their five match winning streak and confirm themselves as runners-up - but visitors Moonshine are on a roll so it won’t be easy. And Paweena’s host Twilight Zone in what should be the decisive battle for the wooden spoon.

The course was in fine condition except around the greens which were very soggy.

Steady Bill Plath took the A flight with 37 points, Jed Mason second 34 points and Fergus Brennan third on countback from Mike Gassau both with 33 points.

Joel Flor took the B flight with 37 points from Ronny Walfridsson second 34 points and Aussie Peter King third 33 points.

Crystal Bay
Stableford

Standing in for DB for a couple of weeks, the would-be organizers departed the Cafe Kronborg at the same time as the rest of the crew and cruised up to Crystal Bay for this week’s tournament.

Ebrahim

Now the trick to good organization is to always arrive ahead of the rest of the party and, with no sign of the remainder of the field in the clubhouse or locker room on their arrival, they relaxed confident in the knowledge that at least the first part of their mission had been accomplished.

Unfortunately they underestimated the rallying skills of the experienced Kronborg drivers and following a leisurely change and a chat sauntered onto the course only to find to their horror that in fact not only had the rest of the guys arrived ahead of them but half the field had already teed off.

Yet another ‘gaff’ from our rookies but no harm done this time thanks to ‘The Admiral’ stepping in to the breach on his ‘day off’ as it were and saving their face by promptly getting the field under way whilst suggesting they might consider getting a faster car for next time

On to the competition then, and this is indeed a fine course with a number of memorable holes and more than its fair share of water, which combined with the tree lined fairways made accuracy from the tee a must in order to have any type of shot to the green.

The undulating slick greens were found to be as true as any we have played on this year and with most of the holes playing in to a stiff breeze it presented a good test for our boys.

As you would expect the good condition of the course was reflected in the scores.

with a number of players doing well, and non more so than the popular Ebrahim carding a brilliant 44pts to take the honors from Brain Noguer whose ‘red hot putter’ he informed us enabled him to take second place with 38 points ahead of Ronny Walfridsson 37 points in third and Fergus Brennan 36 points in fourth.

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Tuesday August 16
Noble Place
Stableford

Following the usual excellent breakfast and with Bob once again at the helm, Noble Place was the aptly named venue for this week’s challenge, and all for the princely sum of 320 baht including the caddy fee.

Peter ‘The Duck’ King (left) and Dick Warburg on the podium.

Recent reports on this venue suggested the course to be in good condition and that turned out to be the case with fast greens, good fairways, and on this occasion well maintained bunkers somewhat of a rarity in these parts.

For many it took a hole or two to adjust to the speedy greens not least of all ‘Noble’ Bob himself who bravely confessed to five putting the first hole, and although he did state his final score one assumes he took more than a six which is not the best start to a round of golf.

On to the tournament then and congratulations to Peter ‘The Duck’ King who left all in his wake as he carded his best score in the three years of competing with the PSC to take first place with a magnificent 44 points from the consistent Dick Warburg in runners up spot with 41 points.

Now Pete has been striving to reduce his 27 handicap for some time and he attributes his recent improvement and subsequent success to a few pointers passed on to him by fellow competitor and three handicapper Thomas Johansson, who he proceeded to ply with a few ‘thank you’ beers on his return to Bert’s.

Another entertaining presentation from Bob and some more excellent nosh and another great day was had by all.

Results Winner: Peter King, Second: Dick Warburg

Near Pins: Karl Linquist, Clive Robinson, Nigel Cannon, Bob Rasmussen, Peter King.

Long Putts: Bob Benda, Andy Evans.

PSC golf from the Three Sisters Bar

As was said last week, scores are going lower as more and more golfers figure out how to beat the course at Siam. As the home course for many of us, Siam is getting easier and easier to score on. This week we had three golfers scoring better than 40 points and three others at 40. It was tight race, but (P.K.) Paul Kinner who disappeared last week as the bag holder made a complete turn around as he stormed in with 44 big points. Just a step behind was Joe St. Laurent with 43 points. What a difference a week makes!

Paul Kinner (right) stormed out of the cellar last week leaving Carl Blackburn the honor of holding the bag.

Following the two front runners were a slew of wannabe winners. Gerry Carpenter (PSC president) came in with 42 points but could not muster the necessary points to win. Two points back of Gerry were three others at 40 points. Earle Kershaw, Dale Murphy and Herb Ishinaga tried to make a run for the top but the front runners were gone.

The axe will be out again trimming the handicaps.

Down in the cellar we found a new face again this week. Carl Blackburn must have stumbled into a bunker or two and maybe a few trees as he headed for the cellar with 21 points. It was a bad day for Carl as his nearest competitor was at 26 points. Bill Gibson was not even close as Carl grabbed the bag and headed for the cellar.

The boys are back…

PSC golf with The Bunker

Crystal Bay Country Club – Monday, August 15

A very pleasant Monday morning and a wonderful day at the very popular Crystal Bay course. The competition was medal play and Bob Turner took advantage of his old handicap to capture first prize in the “B” division before he suffered a 4 stoke cut because of his recent wonderful play. Tony Shepherd also shared a part of first honors with Bob both scoring net 70s. Bryan Rought came third with a score of 71.

After a few holidays and healing from some injuries, The Bunker Boys - (l-r) David Johnson, Jim Payne, John Hughes, Mitch Malone, John King and Mick Ramshaw are all back in action.

In the “A” division Jerry Cooney scored a fine 70 to take first place, second place was Eddie Martin with net 72 and Roger Privett takes third with 73 net. Near the pins went to Jerry Cooney (2) and Geoff Parker.

Century Ban Chang Golf Course – Wednesday,
August 17

A nice surprise to see Mitch Malone back on the course again, he healed his recent wounds by scoring a stableford score of 39 to take first place in the “A” division. Geoff Parker and John King rounded out the “A” division scoring 33 points. In the “B” division a three way tie for first place between Mick Ramshaw, Sunny Ruthsip and Walter Smith each scoring 32 points. Near the pins were won by P.J. Redmond, George Redgewell, John King and Mitch Malone.

Eastern Star Golf Course – Friday, August 19

The week finished with another trip down south to play a stableford competition. Neil Griffin found some good shots in his bag as he returned the winning score of 38 points. Joint runners-up were Mick Ramshaw and Granville Swanton who scored 35 points each. Near the pins were won by Mick Ramshaw, Granville Swanton, Neil Griffin and Geoff Parker.

The Bunker Boys are located on Soi Chaiyapoon (near X-zyte disco and across the street from Tony’s Disco II). Monthly golf schedules are available or consult the Pattaya Mail every week.

Alan and Walter - stars of the east

PSC golf off The Grapevine

Thursday August 18, saw The Grapevine golfers head to Eastern Star for the 18 holes at this well maintained golf course. A good breeze made conditions testing for all, with some handling the test much better than others.

(l-r) Tom Herrington, Steve Hamstad and Roy Pimblett relaxing after a successful day.

At the forefront in the 0-18 group was Alan Pearce (17) with 38 points, closely followed by Bill Knight (18) on 37. Walter Little (21) led the 19 & up crew, again with 38 points, Tom Herrington (21) had 36 points to get runner up money on countback from Gordon Everingham (35).

With 27 players teeing it up, 2 groups meant plenty of technical prizes with near pins being won by Roy (2), Stuart, Phil, Steve and Chris. Mike and Mashi won the long putts. With 2 near pins not claimed these went in to the lucky draw pool, won by Barry, Keith, Jeff and Dick

Back at The Grapevine for the presentation and a meal, with a cold drink in hand, all gave strong endorsement of the course, which only 3 weeks ago had green maintenance underway.

A resounding round of applause was given to Thae the cook, for her fine offering this evening of stir fried vegetables and very tasty noodles.

So if you are looking for a game of golf on a Thursday, come on down to Soi zero entering from Beach road end, and sign up for an enjoyable day with a terrific bunch of people, this will help us make transport and catering arrangements all that you would expect.

We look forward to seeing you there. Cheers & good golfing, J.W.

The Beautiful Game?: Robben hits the headlines

Riz Taylor

Fasten your seatbelts for a whistle-stop European tour, dear reader, after seven days so crammed with soccer I may be forced to miss a few unnecessary words to fit everything in. So we’ll kick off with England Denmark drubbing disgraceful, no chance World Cup, David James rubbish, Eriksson out. Scotland unlucky two late goals 2-2 Austria, Ireland lose to Italy, Zidane goal on comeback, Sweden good win over Czechs, and would you like Sven back?

So England rightfully lose to an impressive Danish outfit in Copenhagen. But who cares? Certainly not the England players, judging by their performances.

The only friendly with any bite was played between the Netherlands and Germany. The history between the two is such that this fixture, friendly or not, is never a meaningless one. Not so long ago coaches Marco van Basten and Jurgen Klinsmann were rivals playing for the two Milan sides, and it was the Dutchman’s team that set the early pace before the Germans stormed back to earn a 2-2 draw. Holland’s Arjen Robben almost won the game by himself, scoring both Dutch goals and making fools of the German rearguard to set up a chance at the death that Rafael van der Vaart narrowly missed taking advantage of.

It wasn’t the first time in the week that Robben had made headlines. He’d earlier criticised his regular employers’ rotation policy, sticking the boot into a Chelsea manager already seething after an outburst by defender Ricardo Carvalho, who had attacked him after being left out of Chelsea’s opener against Wigan.

“I don’t understand why I’ve been told to wait for another chance to play this season. I don’t believe I will be third choice. It’s incomprehensible,” the irate defender told newspaper ‘A Bola’ in his home country of Portugal. Jose Mourinho, feathers ruffled and never one to avoid a public slinging match, countered by saying: “Carvalho seems to have problems understanding things, maybe he should have an IQ test.”

Ouch! But just as the toys were being placed back into the pram, Robben clambered onto the bandwagon by telling anyone prepared to listen that the manager’s rotation policy does little for a player’s mental wellbeing.

“If you play two or three matches and one match is bad, you are immediately on the bench and that’s not good. It’s bad for a player’s self-confidence because you can’t get a rhythm.

“The problem now is that if you have a dip in form or play badly then you are immediately replaced,” said Robben.

More harsh words, but who can genuinely feel any sympathy for players quick to jump at Chelsea’s money, yet then so eagerly spit out their proverbial dummies when the going gets tough?

The underlying issue is that, for the first time, an element of unrest in Mourinho’s expensively assembled squad is beginning to surface, and at precisely the wrong moment as the club embarks on an attempt to retain the Premiership trophy and make greater European strides. The capture of Lyon midfielder Michael Essien brings yet another addition to the collection of egos. More moaning ahead? You bet.

It can’t be easy to accept a move to your previous club’s local rivals, but that’s exactly what Andy Cole agreed to during the summer as he signed on the dotted line to become an employee of Manchester City Football Club.

Murmurs of discontent among the City faithful accompanied Cole’s arrival, but perhaps last Saturday the former Manchester United striker began to win over some of the more sceptical fans with a sublime finish that saw off Birmingham and propelled City into the Premiership’s top five.

Cole’s delicious half-volley that left Brum keeper Maik Taylor grasping at thin air emphatically underlined manager Stuart Pearce’s brave decision to snap-up the former United man shortly after being permanently handed the reins at City. Pearce knew that, although unfashionable and perhaps not the most popular appointment with fans of his new employers, Cole also comes with a proven record of sticking the ball into the net.

Talking of goals, this brings us neatly onto Newcastle United, who cannot seem to buy one at present. The 0-0 stalemate at home to a West Ham side reduced to ten men following the dismissal of Paul Konchesky reinforces that point, and despite flirting with a succession of strikers over the summer, including sulky Nicolas Anelka and a last-ditch attempt to bring in Tottenham’s Frederic Kanoute before the Malian international signed for Sevilla, the Magpies don’t seem able to buy a striker either. Graeme Souness is acutely aware that warhorse Alan Shearer’s increasing lack of mobility makes his likely successor easier to mark, and panic is starting to set in with mere days until the transfer window closes. The latest target is Alberto Luque of Deportivo La Coruna.

Don’t hold your breath. And don’t try saying ‘Alberto Luque of Deportivo La Coruna’ after a few Chang beers either.

Malteser is a Smartie

The former coach of Maltese side Naxxar Lions FC has quit the real game to chance his hand at Subbuteo, its tabletop equivalent. Massimo Cremona, a UEFA-qualified coach, has worked his way up to number two in the Federation of Subbuteo Table Football world rankings.

Speaking to UEFA’s website, Cremona said: “I train two hours a day and I also undertake an intense physical programme as well as making sure I get into the right frame of mind for a big game.”

And finally we head to Romania, where the country’s football journalists have been told to stop moaning by the Federatia Romana de Futbol. The diktat handed to the writers has banned them focusing on the negative side of the game and instead look ‘on the bright side’. I know a song about that.

The Square Ring

by Howie Reed

If you had been wondering what the heck happened to Kostya Tszyu after the beating he took at the hands of Ricky Hatton on June 4th, you’re not alone. In a classic example of from the Penthouse to the Outhouse, for boxing purposes, Kostya has gone from “Pound-for-Pound best” to MIA. You might remember shortly after the Hatton fight there were stories in Ruskie newspapers about Kostya being “sabotaged” by his (insert name) manager, corner, the last reigning Czarina of Russia or guys that fly black helicopters, nothing was true except that he’d done his Marline Dietrich, “I just vant to be alone darling.” Wasn’t Marline? Then had to be Tallulah.

For the first time Kostya has surfaced in the international press with the announcement that he’s planning a trip to Siberia for a boxing promotion featuring Russian star welter Anton Solopov 10-0). Solopov is part of the stable of boxers that Tszyu manages. Also in the stable is Vicotor Oganov (22-0) who’s wins have all come via the KO route. What about Kostya’s own ring career? “I know it is going to happen because I have had lots of phone calls and emails from Russia. It does not have any influence on me. My decision will come purely from me and my family. We are going to sit down and find out the exact reason why I should fight again.” Or not?

The Pan Pacific Feather Champ Fahprakorb Rakkiatgym (50-3), aka Phafrakorb Rakkietgym, was suppose to get a title shot against WBA/IBF Champ Juan Manuel Marquez. Here’s the way those things are suppose to work. The two organizations in this case WBA/IBF decide that Rakkiatgym deserves a title shot. As there are different promoters and sanctioning bodies involved the fight it put up to purse bid. The usually rule of thumb is that the champion gets 75% of the bid and the challenger 25%. You might remember that it was Juan Marquez who after being down three times in the first round battled back for a draw against Manny Pacquiao last May. Yes the decision did hinge upon a misinterpretation of the rules by one judge, “misinterpretation of rules?” The judge forgot, yea right, that a round could be scored 10-6. That’s like Lawrence Welk forgetting “A One anna tua”. Brief time out. David Tua has cancelled out of his August 26th fight with Cisse Salif (pronounced Sissy which is not the best name for a heavyweight) due to pain from recent oral surgery. Sounds like a long way from the heart to me but what do I know. We now retuned you to your regular column.

The Pacquaio-Marquiz decision did smelled like Sunday morning garbage after a Pattaya Saturday night. That aside when the Marquiz-Rakkiatgym purse bids were opened. There was none! No one cared, No bids. None zero, zip, nada. It was tried a second time and still nothing. T he result is that neither boxer has anything on the drawing. Marquez was stripped of his IBF title so can the WBA be far behind? Nope. Quite a comedown for Marquez who refused $750,000 (USD) to fight Pacquiao in a rematch. “Hay man they be doing the limbo.”

In a similar case that’s different (“Yes same, same but different,” said the smiling Teelock), Floyd Mayweather jr. has “allegedly” turned down $9 million USD to fight Ronald “Winky” Wright. According to the Wrights promoter, Gary Shaw who would have a difficult time convincing me that December 25 was Christmas, Mayweather’s. Promoter Bob Arum wanted 12 million and not a penny less. “This is a fight that could have been made,” Shaw told the Tampa Tribune. “Mayweather is talking about fighting Zab Judah, but they will get less money to fight him. Zab is represented by Don King and I know I’m easier to deal with because my ego is not as big as theirs, King and Arum. Judah will want more money because he has all the belts.” One can only wonder why Shaw is rushing to the press when the Mayweather-Judah fight is on the books for November 12 for the WBC/WBA/IBF Welter belts that Judah currently holds. “Yo Gary the horse is out of the barn no use closing the door now.”

Maybe on the same date is the heavy title clash for the WBC belt between Vitali Klitschko and Hasam Rahman. That one also went to purse bit with Top Rank winning the right to stage the fight. Top Rank doing a heavyweight fight? That was a surprise. Don King owns every heavyweight but the Klitschko Brothers. They worship at the alter Finkle. The rumor is that Finkle brought in Top Rank to out bid King. The winning bid was $12/1 USD. Here the champion (Klitschko) gets 70% and the challenger 30%. “Oh please tell us why?” Sure in this case as Rahman was the “interim champ” he gets 5% more. King called Finkle “Dr. Evil” for is under handled dealing’s. The irony here is that should the fight take place on November 12 in conjunction with Mayweather-Judah (which all would agree would make it the ever lovin’ “Blockbuster Event”) King would be the co-promoter.

After a couple of less than challenging tune-ups (Mark Sales 11-26, Daniel Doilan 15-11) WBC flyweight champ Pongsaklek Wanjongkam Kratindaeng-gym (57-2,) gets back to serious work. On October 10 he’ll travel to Toyko’s Korakuen Hall to take on Japan’s champ Daisuke Naito (27-1-2). If it’s a case of de ja vue the fight won’t last long. In April of 2002 Pongsaklek Ko’d Nato is 34 seconds which was the fastest in flyweight history. This is Pongsaklek’s 12 title defense. Joe Calzaghe finally has a name to put on the posters for his September 10 fight at Cardiff International Arena. The name? Evans Ashira? Yep 24-1 and having built that record fighting no one. How the hell did he get a title shot? Two words - Don King. Next!

The more that changes the more that doesn’t. Regular readers will know that there is little doubt that only a couple of people in the world thought Bernard Hopkins had beaten Jermaine Taylor. One of those was Bernard Hopkins. Now make that at least two people cause the WBC Head Honcho Jose Sulaiman has issued the following statement on behalf of the WBC: “That they (WBC) have granted Mr. Hopkins’ request, pursuant to WBC Championship Elimination Rule 1.32, for an immediate rematch with Jermaine Taylor for its Middleweight Title. Under normal circumstances, the WBC does not allow direct rematches of Championship bouts. In this case, however, Mr. Hopkins, through his counsel petitioned the WBC to allow the rematch citing rule 1.32 which provides that in cases in which the champion has been defeated in a bout that the WBC Board of Governors believes was extremely controversial or irregular the WBC can order a direct rematch.” Who would have thunk it? Boy, that Mount Gay Rum and Orange is calling.

Looking ahead to Brno MotoGP – Gauloises Grand Prix Ceske Republiky

On Sunday August 28, the MotoGP season restarts after the summer break (four weeks) at the Automotodrom Brno in the Czech Republic. Live TV broadcasts will be at the usual time of 7 p.m. on the day, both UBC and the Thai Society Channel (TSC Channel 11 on Sophon) are expected to carry the event.

The undulating circuit was built in 1987 and updated in 1996, and is set in a forest area outside of Brno; the track is 15 metres wide and 5.403 km in length with the longest straight being only 636 metres. There are six left and eight right corners, most of which are open sweeping bends that offer ample opportunities for overtaking.

News snippets are that KTM are withdrawing their engine support from Proton; whether Kenny Robert’s team will continue for the rest of the season remains unsure, as does his plan for the longer-term future. Part of KTM’s reason for ceasing support was the input required to develop the new engines for the 2007 season when the engine capacity limit will be 800 cc. Suzuki racer John Hopkins is expected to have recovered sufficiently from his broken left foot to take part, as are the other recent crashers (of which there have been many).

Expect more exciting and entertaining racing from Rossi, hotly pursued by his teammate Edwards and all of the Honda riders; that bonus for finishing ahead of Rossi must be growing and all will be striving to topple Valentino off the podium.

Here are some interesting and astounding tyre statistics from Michelin who supply all of the Yamaha, Honda and KTM teams (12 riders and 24 machines): Michelin transport a staggering 1,200 tyres (40% fronts and 60 % rears) to a European Grand Prix and an additional 10 % for a MotoGP outside of Europe. Full treaded rain tyres account for about 10 % while intermediates are slicks, re-cut to suit the weather conditions prevailing on the day.

Michelin staff overseeing and taking part in the support operation at an event comprise engineers, the programme manager and eight fitters plus a stock man and security for overnight surveillance of the precious rubber.

Three trucks convey the individually bar-coded tyres from the factory in Clermont-Ferrand to the circuits. The equipment required is also taken in the trucks and is three tyre fitting machines, three balancers and two compressors. There is even an air-dryer to remove moisture from the compressed air used to inflate the tyres!

Michelin recover every tyre after use, these covers are returned to the factory for analysis and subsequently destroyed. You might ask how the teams manage to transport the racing motorcycles without tyres. Standard tyres, devoid of any advanced technology are provided for the sole purpose of wheeling the racing motorcycles around.

Enjoy Sunday night, 7 p.m., the season is halfway over but there is still a lot of racing before the 2005 MotoGP Champion will be known.
