Play time for the kid in us all

Kim Fletcher

Saturday 17th September is the Jesters ‘Care for Kids’ Charity Drive Pub Night at Jameson’s the Irish Pub, next door to Nova Park. The Pub Night follows six days after the Jesters Children’s Fair & Family Day at the Diana Garden Resort & Driving Range on Sunday the 11th. The Jesters Children’s Fair is, after all, mainly aimed at giving all the kids of Pattaya a good time, as well as raising bucket loads of money for our chosen charities and beneficiaries.

Jacques Villeneuve could end up in your living room or den.

The Pub Night, though, has a slightly different angle by trying to entertain a different sort of kid. It is also the grand finale of the annual Jesters ‘Care for Kids’ Charity Drive, and a chance for all of those who have put so much time and effort into organizing the events, to let their hair down: those people who have worked so hard buying or selling raffle tickets (and, lets face it, you cannot have one without the other!); the organizing committee, all the Jesters themselves, all the companies and individuals that have donated corporate sponsorship and those that have worked behind the scenes wanting no credit, prize givers and receivers. Oh, the list is endless.

This is where it all takes place on September 17.

To think this whole Jesters Charity Drive was started off by just a small handful of like-minded people 8 years ago, and now needs a workforce of hundreds to keep it running. If for no other reason you want to stir your bones and come out on Saturday 17th September, it is worth coming down to meet all the lovely people who organize this charity drive, and not forgetting the wonderful Sisters from the Fountain of Life Center who make their annual pilgrimage down to the pub just to come and thank everybody.

Well, what actually happens on the pub night?

Of course, the answer to that is loads, apart from the good company, food and drink. There will be all the main sports events of the day on the big screens, so you need not miss out on your favorite matches. The event will be compeered by two of Bangkok’s finest DJ’s, Paul Jackson and Andy Francis. Paul will be bringing with him his full Seventies Road-show Disco, so don’t forget to put on your dancing shoes. Helping out Paul and Andy on stage will be Michael Franklin concerning all things golf, Lewis Underwood the president of the Jesters and chairman of the JCD Committee, Pistol Pete, Diane Connelly will be in charge of all the spot prizes of which there are many, Neil Smith will be making a special appearance to add just a little controlled insanity to the evening. Soothing and stimulating sounds too, from Rick and Harpic.

This Brazilian football shirt is signed by the world’s greatest ever football player, Pele.

But top of the bill will be star auctioneer Eddie Henheffer. Eddie has auctioneering blood running through his veins, and has been ‘on the gavel’ at the Jesters Pub night for the last four years. Whether you buy anything or not, Eddie always puts on a spectacular show and raises a lot of money. Just be careful you do not nod, wink, or raise your arm at the wrong time!

Amongst the many items that Eddie will be auctioning off are a signed and framed photograph of last year’s World Formula One Motor Racing Champion Michael Schumacher, a signed Brazilian football shirt by the world’s greatest ever football player Pele, a signed and framed front page of the English Sunday Times with a full size picture of Jonny Wilkinson just after he dropped the winning kick over the post to win the World Cup for England. From show business we have a signed guitar from Ad Carabao and a concert dress worn by Tata Young, plus much more.

The Grand Raffle will also be drawn that night, with all the prizes there for immediate collection. If you are not fortunate enough to be there in person for the draw we will hang onto your prize for you until you are able to pick it up. There are some truly mind boggling prizes to win. You will also have plenty of opportunity to buy your raffle tickets as late as on the night, as again Diane Connelly will be organizing her little army of sellers to come amongst the crowd. Don’t be shy about the raffle tickets, as there are many airline tickets to be won and other valuable prizes.

Every year now, after the Children’s Fair and the Pub Night are over, we have lots of people wandering around Pattaya, saying they wished they had come to one or other of the Jesters Charity ‘Care for Kids’ events and now feel left out. This year do not let one of those people be you. Please be there – you won’t regret it.

Disabled people train for a fulfilling career at Redemptorist Vocational School

Chatchanan Chaisree

Disabled people in Chonburi province have the opportunity to find fulfilling work and a meaningful role in society through studying at the Redemptorist Vocational School for the Disabled. Father Raymond A Brennan, better known as Father Ray, the Catholic priest who dedicated his life to helping Thailand’s underprivileged, opened the school in 1987. Its present director is Suporntham Mongkolsawat.

Pattaya Mail reporters toured the school in the company of lecturer and deputy administration manager Khamman Srisa-Ard. One of the most popular courses, said Khamman, is a two-year course for disabled people who finished primary school class 6, and which teaches them how to repair electrical and electronic equipment.

Trainer Chanon Samingchanon said that students begin by working on the kind of equipment they will encounter in their everyday lives, such as door sensors and sound activated machines. The students are shy to begin with and sometimes lack confidence in their own abilities, but as they begin to learn they enjoy themselves and are soon working on repairing electrical tools and equipment, computers, and mobile phones.

Another popular choice is a two-year information system development course that is for students who complete secondary school class 3, and which teaches them how to write computer programs, design websites, install programs, and work with computer peripherals such as printers and photographic equipment.

A computer and business management course is also available for students who complete secondary school class 3, in which the students study with volunteer foreign teachers and learn about management, document translation, and accounting.

Father Ray’s legacy to Pattaya will be a lasting one. In addition to the Redemptorist Vocational School he also founded the Children’s Support Foundation, the Auricular Kindergarten Redemptorist, the Redemptorist Center, the Redemptorist Elderly Home, the Redemptorist Blind School, the Underprivileged Children’s Redemptorist, and the Work Management Redemptorist.
