Is desalination right for Pattaya?

Dear Sir;

I refer to the article in Pattaya Mail about the possibility of installing desalination to increase the production of drinking water for Pattaya. Assuming a reverse osmosis plant is chosen, the power consumption, excluding pumping costs, is likely to be in the order of 4 to 6 kWh per cubic metre of water treated. Ten plants, each with a capacity of 2,400 cubic metres per day, could need about 6 MW. Desalination is most popular in the Middle East, where electricity is relatively cheap, but does that make it the right choice for Pattaya?

Yours faithfully,
Susan Joyce

How does one...

Editor;

How does one tell a country, a government, a city, that they have largely stuffed up regarding their tourist agenda (with two notable destination exceptions)?

How does one explain to potential tourists that there is little water or that which there is, is often dirty?

How does one explain to incoming tourists that they are unwelcome after 1 a.m.?

How does one explain that tourists best carry their passport (and risk possible theft/loss) and be prepared to be confronted during their night (sorry, evening) out?

How does one explain that 6 a.m. closing is permitted in some other two areas of the same country?

Answers to their initial questions will surely benefit not just tourism, but business investment (Thai Airways?) and indeed everyone.

DVD display is not acceptable

Dear Sir,

On Saturday afternoon I walked with my 2 children along the front beach road in Pattaya. We were heading for the Royal Garden Centre.

As usual there were many stalls along the sidewalk; however, I was not prepared for the display of DVD’s that we encountered.

Right on the front of the stall for all too easily to see were many disc covers displaying extremely pornographic and lewd adult material.

Too late! My eldest, aged 9, saw the display before I could distract him; fortunately his younger sister didn’t really get a chance as I swiftly moved them on. The boy spoke about the ‘naughty pictures with bare ladies’.

This is unacceptable on the main tourist walkway in Pattaya. I wanted to report the matter to the police but by such a blatant display the police must surely be involved in some deal to turn a ‘blind eye’.

As an ex rugby player I have no problems with most of what goes on in the name of entertainment in Pattaya; but to see this display on the streets was well beyond the mark.

Keep this filth away from the kids.

Shame on the Pattaya authorities for allowing this!

Yours sincerely;
‘Red Faced’

Responding to the 3 baht fight

Dear Sir,

Reference to an article printed in the July 8, 2005 (p4: “British visitor attacked after refusing to pay 3 baht to spend a penny”) edition of you’re newspaper.

I am interested to know where your reporter gained his information for this story, because it is very inaccurate & incomplete of some important facts.

May I suggest you read the article, then compare it to the brief account which follows and if you have the time, I should like to hear you’re independent opinion.

On the evening in question Mr Pitcher did go to the toilet facilities adjacent to BJ Bar and forgetfully left without paying 3 baht. Walking out from the toilet no one challenged me, if they did say something I did not hear it. They should have then tapped me on the shoulder and asked for 3 baht.

What happened next is a main fact for what followed: the Thai man shot me in the back of the head with an air/ball-bearing gun. I initially did not know what hit me, but a witness entering the toilet saw the man point the gun.

At this point I got quite angry (as would most people) with the attitude of this man and I asked, “Why the **** did you do that?” The lady at the desk politely replied, because I did not pay for the toilet. I asked why did you not follow me and ask for the money? No comment was offered, so I gave 60 baht and asked was that enough or would you like 100 baht? I then went to leave as it was pointless continuing the conversation, which I spoke to them in Thai.

Whilst approximately 2/3 way down the exit corridor the two men who worked at the toilet followed me and ripped my shirt whilst pushing me into the wall. At this point I defended myself and a fight issued. According to onlookers, at one stage the two men had the assistance of some friend in attacking me.

This is the account of events which was given to the police at Soi 9 and various people in attendance with cameras.

Once again, I would be interested to hear where you’re reporter got his information from. May I appeal to you, if you’re are going to write an article, please ensure that you have the correct facts or don’t write it at all.

Kind regards,
Mr. P.

Abandoned car

Editor;
On Moo 6, a soi leading west off Sukhumvit, adjacent to the north wall of the Pattaya Orphanage, there is an old abandoned car. This vehicle has been there over 10 years. Grass is growing around it and limbs have fallen on it. It is a hazard, as this soi is very narrow. Is there not a law whereby the police can have this vehicle moved to a junk yard?
