Home team rolls a winner in 4th Annual “Lions Bowl”

Lawn Bowling enthusiasts and those a little more serious converged on Pattaya’s Bowling Green to take part in the fourth annual Lions Bowl competition.

The home team took the title for the second time after fending off players from the Hidden Vale Sport Club Angeles City, Philippines and the Royal Bangkok Sports Club over the two-day competition, August 6-7. The winning team hosts next year’s event.

Some intense but friendly competition at Pattaya’s Bowling Green with players from as far a field as Bangkok and Angeles City in the Philippines.

The Bowling Green Pattaya won the competition easily, fending off the Royal Bangkok Sports Club who won two years running. This is the Bowling Green’s second win with Hidden Vale Sports Club in the Philippines still winless.

The tournament’s vast player mix included members of the Lawn Bowls Association of Thailand National Team and national players from the Philippine Lawn Bowls Association. This mix of national calibre players made for a tournament of high standards and professionalism.

Playing for the home side was Pattaya’s very own Tong Oomen after being selected for the Thai National Team during the national championships last December.

Tong won a gold medal, a silver medal and a bronze medal in the Asia bowls tournament in Kuala Lumpur in June, which included national players from 10 nations.

“We are very proud of her, especially I am since I have been her coach since the beginning, and we are also very proud of the Thai National Team for doing so well in Kuala Lumpur, “ said Glenn ‘Jeep’ Holthaus.

Two of the Thai National Team members - Tong from the Bowling Green and Phonghadyudh from the Royal Bangkok Sports Club - have also been selected for the Asia team.

On top of that Tong just returned from playing in England in the Europe vs. Asia tournament, which saw Asia defeating Europe easily with Tong placing as the 2nd best player from all European Nations and Asian Nations.

Three local girls are now on the Thai National Team who will be going to the SEA (Southeast Asia Games) in the Philippines in November.

The Bowling Green Pattaya will be playing against the Royal Bangkok Sports Club at the Polo grounds in Bangkok this coming weekend August 20 and 21, taking a team of 30 players. This is also the second leg of the inter-club competition with Pattaya eyeing the highly coveted trophy.

High flying action at the Sepak Takraw Cup

Ariyawat Nuamsawat

The annual Pattaya Sepak Takraw Cup held over Her Majesty the Queen’s birthday weekend witnessed a record 68 teams taking part, with spectators crammed into the Pattaya School No 2 building to watch the action.

First day of the competition had 40 doubles battle it out on the courts, each vying for their place in the semis and a shot at the prize money.

The Rewat Municipal Laem Chabang team proudly show off their winner’s trophy.

Day two, and the national takraw team were allowed to compete in the open class, drawing even bigger crowds of spectators who cheered on their favorites as winners advanced into the final round of the contest on Sunday, August 14.

The final results in the Open Class saw the Rewat Municipal Laem Chabang team being crowned winners, defeating the Pattaya City team and taking home 15,000 baht and a trophy. In category B - which prevents national players from competing - the WNSR team won their place on the podium along with 8,000 baht in cash and a trophy. They also won the over-40s category to add to the victory. The WNSR (C) team won the over-35 class.

Then game of sepak takraw was created by the royal family of Malaysia about 500 years ago. The name itself comes from two languages. Sepak is “kick” in Malay, and takraw is “ball” in Thai.

The sepak takraw court and net are of the same standards as for badminton matches. Teams consist of three members and two teams compete for higher scores by spiking a ball into the opponent’s court.

The high flying kicks were a regular sight over the weekend. Sixty-eight teams battled it out for their place in the top rankings.

The same rules apply as for volleyball, with the following four exceptions: 1) players are prohibited from using their hands; 2) a player can touch the ball three successive times; 3) the player’s position on the defensive team is not rotated; 4) net-in service is accepted.

A match is composed of three sets and the team scoring 15 points wins a set. The first team winning two sets wins the match. If both teams are tied, 13 to 13, the first team to score 13 points may choose to decide the set through a 5-point match. If the teams are tied at 14 to 14, the first team to score 14 points may choose to decide the set through a 3-point match.

In 1965 the game was unified into the present volleyball style with the addition of a net and the adoption of international rules.

Both an Asian Sepak Takraw league (ASTAK) and the headquarters of the International Sepak Takraw league (ISTAK) are in Bangkok. There are 18 member countries.

The 2nd annual Flying Farangs Open Golf Tournament comes to Pattaya

After the resounding success of last year, the Bangkok Flying Farangs Ice Hockey Club will be hosting its 2nd annual charity golf tournament on Saturday, August 27, at the Siam Country Club.

The aim is to raise funds for the Thai Fund Foundation (TFF) and towards the development of ice hockey in Thailand. The format will consist of a 2-player Scramble, there will be prizes awarded on several holes, as well as to the winning teams.

TFF initiatives provide support to grassroots organizations working to improve health and environment in Thailand. Net proceeds from the tournament will be donated to 2 worthy causes: to support the Thai Fund Foundations’ Health & Environment program and an equal portion be used for the development of ice hockey in Thailand. The Flying Farangs Open is an open event for everyone, whether you’re a “golfer” or not!

After golf, Henry J. Bean’s Bar & Grill will be hosting an impressive Tex-Mex buffet ensuring the fun continues through the evening.

For more information on the Flying Farangs and the Thai Fund Foundation, you can visit their websites: www.flyingfarangs.com and www.tff.or.th or www. thaingo.org

Noble Place B+C
Stableford

The Noble Place Golf and Country Club was host for a Stableford competition in two flights A0-19 and B20 and above.

On the day the overall course was fine but one third of the greens were randomly sanded and cored. The course will be closed on Mondays starting this week until October.

Ged Mason took the A Flight with, Bob Rasmussen second 37pts and Keith Emerson third 36 points.

‘Slammin’ John Swanson took the B flight with 38 points, Peter King Second 35 points and ‘Grandma’ Anita Lundberg third on count back from Alan Cole both on 34pts.

Thursday August 11
Pattana Sports Club B+C, Stableford

Just one flight was the order of the day as a small but enthusiastic group of would be champions set off for Pattana Country Club.

The day started in fine style with all competitors greeted on arrival at this lavish clubhouse with a complimentary cocktail, non alcoholic unfortunately but never the less welcome, and following a quick change in the sumptuous locker rooms they ventured on to the course just as what can only be described as a ‘mini-typhoon’ started to blow.

As if the gale force wind was not enough to contend with our boys were then confronted with a difficult first hole calling requiring a pinpoint drive to a fairway flanked by water on both sides and as the field waited to tee-off the target area was surely getting narrower by the second as the golfing gremlins took hold.

For a number of players this resulted in their round starting with a penalty drop and a lost ball in the water, not the best confidence booster in the world, and the ensuing firm well bunkered greens and tight fairways confirmed that a difficult day was in store.

Not all succumbed to the pressure however with the ‘Big Virginian’ Bob Rasmmusen once again in the frame showing the way with 37 pts to win from Dick Warburg 36 points taking second on countback from Fergus Brennan and ‘the Admiral’ (34 points) sailing in to fourth place obviously feeling at home in the windy conditions.

On retiring to the restaurant for the presentation the very accommodating staff continued to give our group the five star treatment and a good time was had by all.

Sattahip shows support for troubled South

The walk-run was a symbolic gesture of support to the troubled Southern provinces in addition to a celebration of Her Majesty the Queen’s birthday

Patcharapol Panrak

A walk-run “flag for peace” rally was held at Sattahip as part of Her Majesty the Queen’s birthday celebrations, in which a symbolic handing over of flags was conducted by Sattahip district chief Phongpat Wongtrakul, Sattahip Mayor Narong Boonbuncherdsri, and chairman of the Sattahip sub-district executive Paroj Malakul na Ayuthaya.

The event was also designed to show moral support for those suffering in the troubled Southern provinces. Chonburi Governor Pisit Ketphasook said that the situation there was now so serious that some residents had moved out of the provinces that have been experiencing such unrest.

School No 8 adds fun to sports day

Suchada Tupchai

The focus on sports in Pattaya’s education system has been a longstanding tradition, and leading city administrators attended the 16th annual sports day at Pattaya School No 5.

Time for a little warm up to the music.

The event saw over 1,000 children take part with sprinting and tug-o-war augmented by fun activities such as volleyball, football and sepak takraw from August 5 to 10.

Older children from grades 5-6 competed in a multitude of athletics events, each one playing for team colors. A total of four teams took part.

During the opening ceremonies, Mayor Niran Wattanasartsathorn and city officials joined in the events, along with teachers and parents.

The intense competition in the 7-9 year old football matches.

Serimsit Rungroogee, Pattaya School No 5 director said, “The aim of the competition is to promote sports and healthy living. These events also promote and develop skills and attention to what the children are doing along with good sportsmanship and honesty. All of these are what society needs.”

The school sports competition was also used to select qualifiers for inter-school competitions and finally on to represent Pattaya at future events.

Jan takes two

Golf with the Caddy Shack

Tuesday August 9 had two-dozen golfers travel to Green Valley for a medal competition. On A windy day, coupled with the daunting first tee carry over water, scores were very high.

Jan Eriksen, this week’s double winner out of The Caddy Shack.

In division two, Clark Alexander fired a net 79, to take third place, second place went to Tony Duthie, and in first place was Les Hall with a net 75. Division one had Glyn Evans and Mark Joshua sharing second place with a net 76, but the outright winner on the day was Jan Eriksen with a net 74. The two’s were also won by Jan all on his own. The Booby prize was an out right win for Keith Taylor who was so eager to play golf that he tripped over in the bar, demolishing the practice net, split his toe and then needed to have medical treatment, which was rendered by the highly trained and dedicated staff at the Caddy Shack, then to top his day he won the lucky draw for the free Sunday Lunch. Rumour has it that this is the first golfing prize he has won and his trophy cabinet at home is now full of bananas.

Thursday the August 11 had the Caddy Shack travel to Crystal Bay for a Stableford competition over the A & C courses. Twenty-seven golfers were welcomed by friendly staff and a very efficient starter. In division two with the cut being 17 and over, Peter White and Les Hall shared third place with 34 points, in second came Glyn Evans with 35 points, and first place was Jan Eriksen with 40 points, well played Jan.

In division one with the cut at sixteen and under had Terry Phur with 34 points, second place was Jack Spencer with 38 points, but the leader of the pack and winner of the day goes to John King with 40 points. The two’s were one outright by Jack Spencer. The Bananas were awarded to Eddie Beettie for his round of 2 points on the front nine, then he recovered and put together eleven points on the back nine. The lucky draw of a free Sunday lunch compliments of The Caddy Shack was won by Glyn Evans. After the presentation all golfers took advantage of the 50 baht beers and great food and enjoyed a great evening at the Caddy Shack.

The Caddy Shack plays golf on a Tuesday and Thursday leaving at 11 a.m. with tee off times at midday, everyone is welcome to play just come along as transport is provided. We are situated on soi 17 on the same road towards the Harley Bar. Please check the golf schedule for upcoming venues.

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s Beach Bar

 Tuesday August 9 Phoenix Stableford

With DB saying TTFN for a couple of weeks leaving the organizing in the safe hands of hands of ‘Noble Bob,’ the Tuesday crowd duly gathered at Bert’s for this weeks bash.

For yours truly this was a first, having not played out of Tropical Bert’s before, and a very enjoyable day it turned out to be starting not least with a hearty breakfast setting everyone up for the challenge to come.

Bob Noble (center) congratulates the winner Vincent Smyth (left).

The course itself was in its usual fine condition with excellent fairways and good greens although on this occasion a little slower than we have come to expect from this venue.

As we all know good putting is the key to better scores on any golf course and no more so than Phoenix where the large undulating greens with flags quite often located on the crown of the greens can try the competitors’ patience to the full.

A little sympathy is in order here for Steve Hamstad, who whilst putting together a fine round up to the sixteenth hole, had the unusual occurrence of losing his ball in a bunker. This was until just in the nick of time his sharp eyed caddy spotted a small patch of white barely visible in the sand and Steve was confronted with a totally unplayable plugged lie subsequently leading to a no score.

Now we know bunkers are hazards and you should not be in them in the first place but this penalty did seem a little harsh for merely coming up short on a hole when one feels you could at least reasonably expect some of the ball to be above ground.

Anyway Steve to his credit soldiered on with no complaint but was unable to make any impression on our winners this week as a steady nerve and fine ball striking by Vincent Smyth enables him to shoot a creditable 40 points points taking the honors from Bill Warburg in runners up spot up with 36 points.

Back to Bert’s for chicken and chips a few beers and an entertaining presentation from the capable Bob and needless to say a good time was had by all. Roll on next week.

Results: Winner: Vincent Smyth; Second: Dick Warburg
Near Pins: Bob Benda, Clive Robinson(2),Vincent Smyth, Rod Perrin, Peter King.
Long Putts: #18 Rod Perrin and Vincent Smyth.

A Great Double for our very own "Golden Bear"

IPGC golf from The Haven

Monday August 8
Khao Kheow
Stableford

1st Barry Winton, 36 pts -c/b 19
2nd Mike Dabanovich, 36 pts - c/b 14
3rd Serge Straeten, 35 pts

With “C” course still closed for renovations, it was a great disappointment to find the greens on “B” course heavily sanded and the general verdict was that it is time to give Khao Kheow a miss for a while, perhaps a long while! For those who do not know, Barry Winton, is affectionately known by all and sundry at his home course, Phoenix, as Khun Mee... the bear! Well, despite his continuing back problems, the bear is maintaining his fine form and started the day, birdie, birdie, birdie, unfortunately followed with triple, double but he managed to do enough to finish with a gross 76 that included four birdies altogether and a shank! His 36 points was sufficient to take the honours on countback from Mike with Serge, who completed the podium positions. In the 2’s competition, Ed Trayling finally scooped the division 2 quadruple rollover with the only 2 of the day in the 15 plus category, whilst Barry Winton (2) and Glyn Nicholas shared the division 1 prize. Prior to the presentation, Richard Livingston, the resident PGA professional, welcomed Mike’s father, Don Dabanovich.

Wednesday August 10
Crystal Bay C/A
Medal

1st Barry Winton, net 68 - c/b 32
2nd Mike Dabanovich, net 68 - c/b 33
3rd Gordon Millar, net 76

A slightly disappointing turnout for our second visit of the month to this fine course, perhaps due to the “electric” fast greens that destroyed many a card previously and the decision to play a medal round! However, it was again a pleasure for all to see Stephen Beard makes his second comeback appearance and once again an opportunity for him to join forces with Barry Winton and accept the gauntlet thrown down by Mike Dabanovich and Brian Kelly! This time it was sweet revenge for Mike & Brian as they swept the board, front 9, back 9 to win the match play contest 2up, thus inflicting a first ever defeat for the Doc and the Bear. All this despite Barry’s two 2s and another from Stephen. As can be seen from the scores, Barry & Mike once again dominated the competition with the same result as Monday, Barry shooting a magnificent 72 gross to win on countback. At this rate, Barry is getting closer and closer to a 3 handicap and Dabber will be eyeing a single handicap! Gordon continued his fine form to slide onto the podium in his final competition on this trip. In the 2s competition, the division 1 pool was shared by Barry Winton (2), Trevor Schirmer and Mam Trayling, whilst Stephen Beard enjoyed his chip-in to take the pot in division 2.

Prior to the presentation, Richard Livingston bade farewell to Graham Davis, back to a life of leisure in Edinburgh, Gordon Millar, back to his teaching, which will no doubt now include some golf lessons and to Barry Winton on a little vacation in Dubai and on to England for a brief spell. Friday being a public holiday means the next golf competition will be on Monday at Burapha and we hear that Mike Dabanovich has extended his stay to take full advantage of the Bear’s absence!

New faces take the helm

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the OK Corral

On Tuesday, August 9, it was the turn of Eastern Star Golf Resort to welcome a large group of golfers representing the Pattaya Golf Society from the OK Corral, for their weekly medal event. The day was fine with clear skies, a fresh wind and well prepared fairways with fast greens. Favourites in the field included the recently returned Harry Riley, double winner from the previous week, Ken Graham and current Pattaya pacesetter Mikael Andersson, but it was to be a day when new faces were to appear at the top of he leader board, always a welcome sight. Another recent returnee, Peter Fitton, played some fine golf in his round of net 74 to take third place, whilst founding PGS member, George Meigh played his first official competition with the group for more than two years and showed he had not lost any of his guile in producing an excellent round of net 73 for second place.

Paul Scully, playing in only his second official competition, led the field with net 72, his only blemish being on the eleventh hole where a triple bogey cost him a sub-par round. It was a fine victory. The pace of the greens caught most people out and the opportunities for the illustrious birdie twos were alluring but elusive. Such was the appeal of the well placed bunkers that Rob Dolan found their charms so hypnotic, and he spent seemingly as much time in them as he did on the rest of the course, assuring himself of the refreshing Booby Bevy at the presentation later. It had been another good day at the friendly Eastern Star Golf Resort.

Beethoven strikes a winning note at Crystal Bay

On Thursday, August 11, the Pattaya Golf Society left the OK Corral and travelled to Crystal Bay for their weekly stableford tournament and found the “C” and “A” nines in breathtaking condition with some of the fastest greens in the province. It was a grand occasion and the stage was set for some good golf. After the first nine it was clear the winner would be either Denis Smith or Ken Graham, both of whom had composed fine overtures to their rounds, whilst other favourites including Bill Hewitt and Harry Riley, were striking dull notes on the speedy greens. Newcomer Bo Engstrom tuned up with a fine 20 points on the back nine in his first Pattaya competition and, indeed, it was good enough to give him second place, one point ahead of Rob Dolan for whom a level par back nine was some compensation for earlier errors. It was left to Ken Graham to take the podium with 36 points and his reputation as “Beethoven” was confirmed as he also took the rolled-over two’s pot for the third time in succession, this time with a monstrous thirty foot downhill putt on C7.

Elsewhere Denis Smith’s fortunes had slipped as his game went from “Eroica” to “Pathetique” on the back nine and his reward was the Booby Bevy back at his home base in Soi Rungland. In the opinion of all the golfers Crystal Bay in this shape is a treat to play and will feature prominently in the Pattaya Golf Society’s golfing calendar.

The Lads and Lasses spread the wins Around

IPGC golf from Lewiinski’s

Sunday August 7
Green Valley, White Tees
Stableford

1st A Flight: Rick Sharp, 39 pts
2nd A Flight: Joe Mooneyham, 38 pts
3rd A Flight: John Hillier, 38 pts
1st B Flight: Bruce Tollitt, 39 pts
2nd B Flight: Peter Emslie, 39 pts
3rd B Flight: Vic Hester, 38 pts
1st C Flight: Noy Pimmoen, 43 pts
2nd C Flight: Ken Kutzing, 41 pts
3rd C Flight: Poo Supaporn, 37 pts
Near Pins: #5 Bill Broschart; #16 Mike Seely

There was no Man of the Match this day but it was not due to lack of performance. It was because the best player was a gal, Noy Pimmoen. Noy’s 43 points took C Flight as Kenny Kutzing, himself shooting a fine 41 points, felt like a thorn between two roses, as Ms. Silver Back took third. Bruce McAdam tried to break into the dance but Poo thwarted him on count back. A couple of weekend marauders in the person of Mulligan’s Bruce Tollitt and The Haven’s Peter Emslie locked up in count back for the top rung in B Flight. Bruce had the better of it, as his 39 points had the advantageous distribution. Both scores overshadowed the fine 38 point effort of Victor “The Inflictor” Hester. In the top Flight it was the The Hermit getting the better of his mate Joe “I’m in the” Mooneyham and Johnny Hillier by a single digit. Joe than nipped John on the ensuing count back.

Tuesday August 9
Khao Kheow, A & B
Yellow Tees, Stableford

1st A Flight: John Emmerson, 39 pts
2nd A Flight: Joe Mooneyham, 38 pts
3rd A Flight: John Hue, 34 pts
1st B Flight: Mike Gaussa, 40 pts
2nd B Flight: Chaten Patel, 35 pts
3rd B Flight: Ray Dell, 34 pts

The entire field attacked Pete Dye’s Khao Kheow from the longer yellow tees. Col. John bettered Col. Joe by a single point in the premier Flight, with John Hue a distant, but still profitable, third. Mike Gaussa, admittedly playing some of the best golf of his like, was Man of the Match with his 40 points, five clear of Chaten Patel and yet another clear of Ray “Farmer in the” Dell.

Wednesday August 10
Burapha, A & B, Blue or White Tees
Stroke/Medal

1st Blue Flight: Vic Hester, net 71
2nd Blue Flight: Nick Payne, net 72
3rd Blue Flight: Chaten Patel, net 73
1st White Flight: John Hillier, net 67
2nd White Flight: Mike Craighead, net 68
3rd White Flight: Jan Eriksen, net 71

Johnny Hillier, everybody’s nice guy, dazzled most of the field and the White Flight with a net 67. The only guy close to him was wily Mike the Mechanic who was but a stroke adrift. Jan Eriksen, who is winning everything from golf to pools this week, finished up the short Flight.

The Blue Bombers were led in by Victor “The Inflictor” Hester who was trailed in one stroke increments by Nick Payne and Chaten Patel. Chatel Patel, it should be noted, needed a three-way count back victory over Monsieur Serge and the GM.

Friday August 12
Century Ban Chang, White Tees
2-Person Better Ball, Stableford

1st Place Team: Roy Thornton & Rick Holmes, 44 pts
2nd Place Team: Peter Henshaw & John Emmerson, 44 pts

The Society rolled the holiday bones on The Queen’s Birthday and almost came up the loser. It was a chaotic start as the course was inundated by golfing friends from McAllister’s and Mulligan’s, not to mention a hoard of holidaying Thais. There were no carts, but GM Johnny, with riding crop in hand, marshaled the lads and lasses out on the course and ultimately a fine day was had. A count back sorted out the podium as Roy Thornton and Rick Holmes had the better of newly arrived Irish visitor and old friend Peter Henshaw, who wisely teamed up with ol’ Silver Back. The twin 44 point efforts left the fine 43 of Bob Lindborg and Terry Phur and the 42 of Joe Mooneyham and Dave Porter unrequited.

Ball rises to the top at Century Ban Chang

PSC golf from McAllister Bar & Grill

With a holiday on offer a number of the Ban Chang denizens were able to take a break from the office to join the usual suspects for golf on a day when the weather can only be described as perfect. Cool and breezy was just the right touch to make all players very comfortable and thoroughly enjoy their round.

Larry Ball, Paul Kraft, one of Don’s lovelies and Aaron New.

While some notables struggled quite a few players were able to better handicap. Once all the rounds were complete the results were announced at McAllister’s and compliments passed out on the day’s winners. No rare visitor to the podium was once again Larry Ball topping the field with 43 points, this after being a cellar dweller earlier in the week with a mere 20 points at the Three Sisters Monday outing. Tied at 42 points each were Paul Kraft and Arron New, “Dougie’s mate” for those who maybe fail to recognize the name, a count-back put Paul in front and left Aaron in 3rd spot. Another tie was resolved for 4th place with Graham Hiskett outdoing Mike Gerrard with each posting 38 points.

With the winners busy treating the less fortunate to rounds of amber fluid to enjoy with the top notch luncheon provided by the genial Don McAllister a bit of entertaining music was on hand to keep the party in a good mood.

To the chagrin of some, all the scorecards were input to the PSC handicap Secretary the following morning well in time to be calculated into the update scheduled for the weekend. Hands were rubbed with glee at the prospect of adjusting handicaps of certain gentlemen but all in proper order under the watchful eye of the PSC Golf Chairman. Check to see who has been awarded an M.

Country Club stumbles

Jomtien 8 Ball Pool League

Week 19 saw a clean sweep for the home teams for only the second time this season. San Snack Bar sent Woaw’s Pub home from Soi Welcome with their fourth loss in a row. SSB had it wrapped up before supper but conceded a couple of doubles to make the final score 6-3. With three matches still to play, San Snack Bar confirmed themselves as League champions for the 2005 season.

The Lucky Bar v Moonshine lineup - Lucky Bar won 6-3.

In Soi 5, Simple Simon upset Bolaget’s comeback and extended their winning streak to four with an easy 7-2 win. The seven games in the ‘won’ column helps Simple Simon’s game difference and that could become an important factor in the final reckoning.

Country Club couldn’t handle the Rose & Thistle table, going down 7-2. The loss makes CC’s job to secure second spot that much more difficult, but the win gives R&T an outside chance to steal the runners-up trophy with some ‘easy’ matches to come.

Hide-A-Way scored their first win since week 13 when they saw off visitors Twilight Zone 6-3. The last time that they won Hide-A-Way held second rung on the ladder, but that run of four losses and the bye makes them only the remotest of possibilities for a trophy.

Also at home in Soi Welcome, Lucky Bar bounced back after a couple of losses to end Moonshine’s good run of form. The home team led 4-2 at the break and took the points with the first doubles. The remaining games were shared to make the final score 6-3.

Paweena’s had the bye.

Next week could see second place decided when Country Club hosts Simple Simon. On recent form, Simple Simon would be favourites but with the home advantage CC haven’t given it away just yet.

Larry drops the ball

PSC golf from the Three Sisters Bar

It was a tough day on Monday as three golfers tied for first at 40 points. I guess Siam is getting easier as more people get to know the layout of the course. Bill Key, Larry Emerson and Terry Curtis all came in with 40 points. As Bill Key and Larry left early, Terry became our automatic winner for the day by default - no countback was needed.

Larry Ball (left) surprisingly this week’s bag-holder as he joins Terry Curtis this week’s winner.

Following close on their heels was Earle Kershaw with 39 points. Four other golfers were next in line with 37 points each. Dennis Willett, Bill Gibson, Paul Shortino, and Bob Benda all shot a good game but fell short of the leaders.

A new face again looking out of the cellar. This week it was Larry Ball’s turn in the barrel holding the bag as he shot one of the worst games of his life, coming in with a miserable 20 points. Tully was reaching for the bag with 22 points but Larry came storming by and snatched the bag and headed for the cellar. I’m sure that Larry is preparing his revenge for next Monday.

Bob doubles up for Division B

PSC golf with The Bunker

Khao Kheow Country Club - Monday
August 8

On Monday morning the Bunker Boys headed out to play a stableford competition on the very difficult Khao Kheow course. The scores returned were better than usual because of good weather. In division “A” John King scored 39 points to capture first prize. In second was Scot Eaton with 32 points and John Hughes returned with a score of 31 points to take third place. Bob Turner won the “B” division with a score of 37 while Geoff Parker scored 35 points for second place. Joint third place with 31 points each were Mick Ramshaw and David Lightfoot. Near the pins went to David Johnson, Blair Newton and Scot Eaton.

Bob Turner (left), shown here on course with Tony Shepherd, took first honors in the B division on Monday and Wednesday.

Bangpra Golf Club - Wednesday August 10

It had been two months since the last time the Bunker Boys played Bangpra and this time they found the course to be in good condition. The best scores of the day were in the “B” division with joint winners. Bob Turner and Bryan Rought each scored level par 72 net. Mick Ramshaw came third with 74 net. The “A” division had a four-way tie for first with a score of net 77. The winners were Geoff Parker, Jim Shand, Roger Privett and Gerry Cooney. Near the pins were won by Bob Turner, Eddie Martin, David Lightfoot and Mick Ramshaw.

Great Lakes Golf Course - Friday August 12

Being a holiday and playing at Great Lakes resulted in just one division for a stableford competition. The course was in fair condition but extremely difficult rough. Les Winch scored 35 points for first place and Jim Shand came second with 34 points. Near the pins were won by Jim Shand, Roger Privett and Mick Ramshaw (2).

The Bunker Boys are located on Soi Chaiyapoon (near X-zyte disco and across the street from Tony’s Disco II). Monthly golf schedules are available or consult the Pattaya Mail every week.

The Beautiful Game?:Hammers have seen it all before

Riz Taylor

There were more than a few reasons for supporters of West Ham United to rub their eyes, pinch themselves and check that they hadn’t been transported back to the mid 1990s last week, as they kicked off their Premiership campaign with a win at Upton Park. If the sight of a promising young defender with the surname ‘Ferdinand’ and an Israeli dancing around midfield pulling the strings behind the front two wasn’t enough, the sight of a sprightly Teddy Sheringham rolling back a few years of his own surely sealed the deal.

A banner held up by one fan said, “Back where we belong,” and with a 3-1 win that took the Hammers to joint top of the Premiership one might be forgiven for agreeing with him.

But the apparently comfortable result masked a first half in which visitors Blackburn Rovers largely dictated the play, and indeed it wasn’t until ten minutes before half-time that Sheringham produced West Ham’s first shot at goal, and a weak one at that. Andy Todd’s opener for Blackburn saw the score at 1-0 as the two teams went in for half-time oranges. An opening victory looked anything but likely for Alan Pardew’s side.

Forty-three seconds into the second half came the turnaround. Yossi Benayoun, the Israeli picked up from Racing Santander and who on this performance looks a fabulous signing, threaded a pass through to Sheringham twenty yards from Blackburn’s goal. The veteran was first to react after the ball hit Todd’s ankle, and planted a well-placed strike past Rovers goalkeeper Brad Friedel to equalise.

After a couple of scares at the other end, Nigel Reo-Coker skipped a challenge and unleashed an unstoppable drive to make it 2-1, before winger Matthew Etherington tapped into an unguarded net after more clever work from Benayoun to ensure the win.

Sheringham, who turns 40 next year, was visibly frustrated after being substituted by Pardew towards the end of the game. The manager, though, will know that clever and restrained use of his star striker could be the key to his side’s Premiership survival this year.

Neighbours Charlton Athletic joined West Ham at the top with an identical result away at Sunderland, who were handed a reality check in their maiden fixture back in the top flight. They face a difficult trip to Anfield this weekend to face a Liverpool side desperate to keep pace with the leaders after Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Middlesbrough.

Wayne Rooney profited from a gift of a pass by Everton defender Joseph Yobo and ensured a 2-0 win for Manchester United, whilst Jermain Defoe, Rooney’s likely strike partner in England’s upcoming internationals, did his chances no harm with a superb effort at Fratton Park to seal a 2-0 win for Tottenham at Portsmouth.

Return of the Three Musketeers

Good news for the non-Irish football lovers everywhere this week after Claude Makalele, Lilian Thuram and the masterful Zinedine Zidane all reconsidered their international retirements in a bid to propel the struggling French into next summer’s World Cup finals.

France currently sit fourth in Group Four, trailing leaders Ireland by three points.

Zidane, a former multiple World and European Player of the Year, won the competition for the most bizarre comeback reasoning by some margin. In an interview with France Football magazine he spoke of a ‘mystical’ visit during the night that prompted his rethink.

“I don’t want people to make too much out of this, or for what I’ve confessed to be misinterpreted, but what’s happened to me is quite mystical and even escapes me a bit. I didn’t tell anyone about this - not my wife, not anyone,” said the world’s costliest footballer.

‘It was a real person, but it all seemed so distant,” he continued. “I had something akin to a revelation. I had this sudden desire to go back to my roots.”

Asked about the identity of his mysterious visitor, Zidane refused to give any clues.

“Until my last breath, I won’t say,” he said. “It’s too intense.”

Visits in the night? Without telling the wife? What’s the betting on ‘Zizou’ fitting nicely into Pattaya life after he actually does decide to retire?

Meanwhile, and in reaction to this news, representatives of the Football Association of Ireland have been frantically texting Liam Brady and Niall Quinn to see if they fancy dusting off their boots.

Giants clash this Sunday

Arsene Wenger takes his Arsenal side across London to face Chelsea in what could prove a decisive fixture this Sunday at 10 p.m. Pattaya time.

‘Decisive’ may seem a casual remark at this early stage, but you’ll recall that in the last two seasons these sides have won the Premiership with staggering records. Chelsea were defeated only once last year, by Manchester City, whilst the Gunners went unbeaten during their 2003-04 campaign. So whilst there’s a chance of a genuine four-way battle for the trophy this season if Liverpool and Manchester United can improve, victory for either side will provide an enormous morale booster.

Will Arsenal shrug off the loss of Patrick Vieira and take the points, or will Chelsea put down an ominous marker for a second season of success? And will Jose Mourinho finally break the habit of a lifetime and finally get a shave?

There’s only one way to find out. Simply put this fixture is huge, so catch it if you can.

The Square Ring

by Howie Reed

Sometimes you got to play a little catch up. Some fight results came in too late for last week’s column so here goes. Hard to believe that someone from Thailand would choose to live and work in Japan, the Land of the Rising Sun and Falling Economy. But that’s exactly what former champ Eagle Kyowa (14-1, 5 KO’s) has done. I was kinda, (I know I got an email that there is no word kinda. I know that but I hate to type “kind of” so invented “kinda”. Life’s not perfect live with it) in error when I typed ex-Champ cause after he got the unanimous nod over Katsunari Takayama (15-2), he’s now the WBC 105 title holder. Katsunari now becomes “ex-champ” which he wasn’t before he lost. Eagle forfeited the title originally to Issac Bustos when he fractured his shoulder in the 4th round of their bout. One writer got upset cause he didn’t go on because he had a big lead after three rounds and after all “what’s a fractured shoulder over 7 rounds with someone banging on it.” Takayama then beat Bustos so now the circle is complete. Next!

WBA featherweight champ Chris John (36-0) marches on. This time with an “impressive stopping of Australia’s Tommy Browne (18-4).” Prior to the fight John’s trainer said, “Browne has good skills and proven durability (that) after taking WBC featherweight champion In Jin Chi of Korea the twelve round distance in January 2005. Chris John is only 25 years of age and has shown great improvement since his impressive twelve round points win over American Derrick Gainer in April this year in Indonesia. He is a very motivated boxer and continues to improve - his gymnasium form is 100%. I am sure Chris John will win on over Tommy Browne but we are prepared for a tough battle. He will then make another optional defense of the championship in October before his mandatory is due in early 2006.” The trainer was right as rain although I’m a little confused as to what “gymnasium form” is. Must be an Aussie deal although I don’t remember Crocodile Dundee talking that way but then he didn’t say, “Shrimp on the barbie” either. That defense in October may be even more important than just another fight for John.

As most of the world doesn’t know or care the Jones jr. - Tarver III rematch has been moved from Las Vegas, Nevada to Tampa Bay Florida. That contest is scheduled for October 2 (Thai Time) for those of you that plan ahead. As part of that package Chris John has received an offer to defend on the card, which would give the undefeated champ exposure in North America. A huge step up for the Indonesian and less chance of dying as his home country leads the world in ring deaths. The scheduled Jones jr.-Tarver II contest was always the “dog that wouldn’t hunt” as far as Las Vegas was concerned. The announcement of the original venue was met with blank stares and comments like “Oh no. Lousy food in the press room.” Once the home of professional boxing Las Vegas has now become the place were promoters take fights that no one else wants. Tampa jumped into the spotlight when 15,000 plus showed up and paid to see the recent Robin Reid-Jeff Lacy tussle. “Paid” is the word here as opposed to showed up.

If you can believe the words out of both the Lacy and Calzaghe camps a fight between those two undefeated champs is all but signed, sealed and delivered for sometime in November maybe outdoors in Cardiff. “Oh yea, there’s a great idea Howie. Outdoors, Cariff Wales, November. “Dumbass.” Upon further review how about maybe in the Cardiff International Arena? That at least makes some sense.

“I’m delighted that Lacy won and is still undefeated to set up our showdown in November in what will be real super-fight,” said Calzaghe. “That was probably Lacy’s best performance yet and impressed me but it’s hard to say how good Lacy is because Reid was so poor.”

I would like to remind Calzaghe that when he fought Reid back in 1999 he escaped with a “strange split decision.” Strange? Try these scores n for size. Judge: Robert Byrd 116-111; Judge: John Duggan 116-111 and Judge: Paul Thomas 111-116. The latter for Reid. Before Calzaghe gets ready for Lacy he has a date against TBA in September. The Calzaghe-Lacy card will also feature the second pro fight of the next great savior of British Boxing Amir Khan. Bet he doesn’t ride the underground in London with a backpack.

Anyone out there remember Clifford Etienne (29-4)? Sure you do. He’s the guy that was found boxing in Angola State Prison in Louisiana by a former sheriff who probably should have also been a guest there also. As the “next’ coming heavyweight champ he built a record of 18-0 and had a great nickname “The Black Rhino”. Then he ran into light hitting Fres Oquendo (19-0) got knocked down 7 times and out in the 8th. Along the way he did beat Lamon Brewster who may be some kind of heavyweight world champion now. You may remember that Etienne got KO’d in 49 seconds back in 2003 by Mike Tyson. Last week he tried to hold up a bank cashing business at gunpoint. Leaving the business he ran into several police officers. Fired a shot and missed everything. Then he “carjacked two cars”, tried to fire the gun a couple more time and like his career it didn’t work. Etienne will now return to Angola where he’ll be able to be a member of the institutions boxing team for a long time.

Hasim Rahman improved his record to 41-4 with what has been described as an “uninspiring” 12 round decision over Monte Barrett (31-4). Gee a heavyweight fight that was “uninspiring”. That seems a lot more like the ordinary heavyweight fight. SNFU for all you retired and military guys and gals out there. “Both fighters, who are friends outside the ring, seemed reluctant to follow up on the all too few occasions when they landed big shots, prompting catcalls from the crowd.” Regardless Rahman wins the “interim” WBC heavy title. That means from last night until he gets beat or wins against Vitali Klitschko down the road he’s “interim”. I remember when I was “interim”. Didn’t know it until the baht ran out. Surprised the heck out of me. Even with the somewhat easy win Rahman ran out of gas in the late round sand actually was hurt in the 12th.

Ricardo Mayorga (28-5-1) is back and his “outrageous statements and life style” have been missed. He said that he would knockout former IBF Champ Michele Piccirillo (44-2) in 14 seconds. Just a little bit off as it took him 2,160 to win a “easy” unanimous decision. Mayorga put Piccirillo down twice in the second and once again in the fourth. Mayorda is awkward in the ring that it’s almost impossible to out box him. That’s what Piccirillo tried to do. This win for Mayorga was suppose to set up a WBC title fight against the winner of Sunday’s fight between Fernando Vargas-Javier Castillejo. Vargas filed a lawsuit last week against the WBC because they “violated Federal code and caused Vargas monetary damages.” I guess the same crew on behalf of Vargas will sue the makers of the steroids that Vargas took on the same grounds.” No wonder that I have been known to dip my bill in the amber fluid of life.”

Tom terrific scores tankard triumph

PSC golf off The Grapevine

Thursday, August 11 saw 41 Grapevine golfers head to Rayong Green Valley for their monthly medal play Grapevine Tankard. It was a full field and unfortunately, we had to turn some players away. The day started with S.O.S. for breakfast, a traditional American breakfast that was also enjoyed by some pleasantly surprised Brits. It was a beautiful and cool morning with no threat of rain, thank goodness. At 10 minutes to 9, everybody headed on their way with high hopes of winning the Tankard.

Mike Gaussa, Doug Lynch, and Tom Herrington.

After all was said and done, Tom Herrington shot a stellar net 67 to capture the ‘C’ Division and Tankard with Peter Henderson was runner-up in this group.

In the A Division (0 - 15), Matsumoto Masayoki (5) had a net 69 with Doug Lynch (2 who was runner up with a nett 72. The B Division (16 - 21) was won by Mike Gaussa (16) with a net 68, while John Sinclair (21) had a net 70 to get the runner-up prize. It has to be said that all the prizewinners played well as a steady wind blowing toughened conditions, and the greens providing their usual challenges.

With such a strong field, nearest to pins and long putts in each of the 3 divisions meant 18 technical prizes up for grabs. The technical winners were Tony, Colin, Ray, Steve, Ian, Tom, Alan, Peter, John, Matsumoto, Nigel, and Bill - with several double-ups amongst the group. Lucky draws went to Richard and Chris John, picking up his first win (nothing to do with golfing skill there, but a prize nonetheless.)

After golf it was back to the Grapevine for some mouthwatering pasta and cold drinks. While some spoke of golf, others watched the cricket, but all agreed that it was a great day. The Grapevine’s popularity as a golf venue continues to grow by word of mouth each week. The hosts take excellent care of their golfers and always provide a highly anticipated meal upon return. If you’re interested in a wonderful day of fun banter and good golfing, come on down and sign up at The Grapevine (Soi ‘0’ off Beach Road.) Cheers and good golfing. JW
