May 3 at Hang Loose in the Hard Rock Hotel, general manager Andrew Khoo threw a party for staff who had done an outstanding job during the past year. Presentations went to the best staffers and people who performed well in various activities, such as the hotel women’s volleyball team that won the “world” competition, and the bartender team that has done so well in various contests. Also receiving awards, which include a coveted Hard Rock Pin, were staff that had shown outstandingly good spirit and honesty towards guests and customers.

Andrew Khoo stressed the importance of staff unity, and thanked and congratulated the staff on behalf of Hard Rock Hotel and Hard Rock Caf้. Those who received the pin were heroes of Hard Rock in Pattaya, putting their energy into their work, and helping achieve the success Hard Rock enjoys today, he said. People at the party enjoyed a great Indian style show, with the Hard Rock Band on hand with good music.

Urs “Mee” Mosimann, executive assistant manager, presents a pin to Yui-Siritorn Kraivisutsap, director of marketing communications.

70s rock again in support of the blind

The decade of glitter and glam came alive again on May when Alcazar staged a charity rock concert featuring music from the 70s, organised in association with Pattaya Redemptorist School.

Suchai Rujiwanitchkul from the Pattaya Redemptorist School speaks on the purpose of the concert

Suchai Rujiwanitchkul, from the Redemptorist School, was presenter of the evening, with Mayor Niran Wattanasartsathorn as honoured guest. Amongst the well-known musicians were the Jaccs Group, Chutima Jeeramongkol, and pianist Yuwathida Jeerapat.

The main purpose of the concert was to raise funds for the Young Princess Foundation for the Blind (1993). Revenue will go towards expanding the facilities and activities at the Redemptorist School, which has a vocational project to support the blind after they have finished secondary school class 3.

Two new buildings are to be constructed at the school for training and work practices, and for residential use. A six-storey building is planned at a cost of 25 million baht, and a four-storey building at 15 million baht. Construction is due to be finished in 2006.

Over 125,000 baht raised for PGF charities at Mata Hari dinner

The latest Pattaya Gay Festival gala charity dinner held during the yearlong fund-raising events in aid of HEARTT2000 and local charities took place at the Mata Hari Restaurant on Pattaya Second Road. The event was an outstanding success with a final figure of over 125,000 baht raised.

Trust a woman! The picture shows an exuberant Janet Smith with her equally happy husband Richard (he’s the one on the left) after she won the only two prizes she wanted: the cuddly toy and the one-baht gold chain.

Donations were made on the day in addition to 25,000 baht from the Jomtien Songkran Street Party, and of course the ubiquitous raffle made up the total figure.

Peter Malhotra brought the Pattaya Mail on board as sponsors and the committee is always grateful to the various media representatives for providing vital exposure for the events.

HEARTT2000 (Help Ensure AIDS Rescue in Thailand Together) is run by Dr Philippe Seur. It has ever increasing needs to be met month by month to help supply the necessary life-saving drugs to the many new patients that have been accepted into the programme. With over 800 patients under review, Dr Philippe’s resources are stretched to the utmost and the PGF has committed a regular monthly sum to help meet these needs.

The committee is always overwhelmed by the generosity of businesses in giving vouchers for services and items for the lucky draws and wishes to put on record their thanks.

Individuals and businesses are welcome at any time to join the sponsor programme that gives a listing on the website and a mention at events. See www.pattayagay festival.com or contact a committee member through the link or at PGFnews@ hotmail.com

Dancing into the month of May

Staff reporters

The Berliner Bistro, under the new management of Ralf and Ina Buschhter, held a typical German celebration on April 30 when they organized a “Dance into the month of May” evening. Live music, special food and a May Queen contest attracted a large number of guests.

Gaby Pilatus (center), shown here with the 5 Thai runners-up, was crowned May Queen 2005.

The May Queen contest was the most eagerly anticipated happening on this very hot and humid Saturday. Five young and pretty Thai girls and one German lady competed and had to show their dancing, acting and fun-loving skills during a few rounds. The applause was especially enthusiastic when the girls had to dance a typical Bavarian “Schuhplattler”, introduced to them by the Navy band.

The audience then was asked to decide who would be May Queen 2005. The German lady, Gaby Pilatus, was their favourite. Pattaya Blatt’s executive editor, Elfi Seitz, had the honour of crowning Gaby while hostess Ina awarded her the prize of a suckling pig dinner for 12 people. The runner-ups received a bottle of beer and flowers.

After the contest, guests took to the floor and danced into the month of May.

PILC bids farewell to Sheri Fergusson

Fond farewells were bid to Sheri Fergusson at the Pattaya International Ladies Club (PILC) May luncheon, held at Pattaya Marriott Resort & Spa. Sheri, who has been a PILC member since 1982, will be returning to her native USA on May 22.

Sheri is a true veteran of Pattaya. She first stayed here with husband Larry from 1967 to 1971, then returned with him in 1982. “Forever,” as they thought. They opened the Rancho Texas Restaurant in Soi Potisarn, which fast became a famous hideaway for expats in Pattaya. Sheri also opened a small factory for canned food and sold the produce successfully to supermarkets.

Larry passed away in 1998. Sheri closed the restaurant, but kept the factory until now. Her health became bad about two years ago, but Sheri characteristically showed her toughness, and overcame her sickness. With her condition stable now, but still fragile, she decided it was time for her to go back to the States, where she will be living with her sister in Houston, Texas.

Sunday May 1 saw the opening of the Grottino gourmet bakery, located in Soi Day & Night 2. Manageress Yupin and her husband, supervisor Konrad Witschi, along with chief executive of the owning company Texwatch Corp, Peter Wandeler, were all on hand to welcome the guests who arrived as early as 11 a.m. Delicious bread, ham baked in a bread crust, and homemade potato salad were served at the opening party.

The Grottino offers a large range of different breads, cakes and cookies, plus other Swiss specialities.

The small but exclusive menu at this restaurant/bakery offers a range of light meals, including Swiss specialties such as rosti, sausages and sandwiches. There is a large range of different breads, cakes and cookies. Sausages of all kinds are waiting to be taken home; there are fondue and raclette dishes, and of course, Swiss cheese. Despite the exceptionally high quality of the produce, the prices are very affordable.

One cannot miss this place, since the building in which it is located is a spectacular one, calling to mind the works of Dali.
