Junior Tennis Tournament a hit
The Royal Cliff Beach Resort successfully hosted its 3rd
Annual Junior Tennis Championships drawing a field of over 200 girls and
boys aged 8 to 16 years and a crowd of suitably impressed spectators.
Alexander
Hausler, Royal Cliff Beach Resort with boys and girls Under 8s winners.
Held late August, the tournament aimed at boosting youth
sports and tennis in Thailand, children from around the country clashed on
the resort’s tennis courts for a two-day round robin competition with
winners in each of the ten categories emerging victorious, taking home
trophies and prizes.
Winners were also awarded points to the national
competition where further matches are set to take place around the country.
The event was co-sponsored by Wilson, Vanichwattana Co. Ltd., Sermsuk Co.
Ltd., Thanaphat Co. Ltd., Foremost Co. Ltd., King Fisher 108 Trading, AIS

Barry Traynor masters Ban Chang
IPGC TAGGS golf from The Haven
Monday September 6 Century
Ban Chang Medal
1st Barry Traynor, net 70
2nd Richard Garland, net 73
3rd Mo Bertrand, net 75
On a tough Ban Chang course Barry Traynor was the only
golfer to shoot an under par round with his net 70. He beat the Pizza Man,
Richard Garland by three shots with Mo Bertrand, playing less golf of late,
but coming into a bit of form with his 75.
Barry
Traynor shot under par to win the day out at Century Bang Chang with a net
70.
The two’s were shared by Masashi Kenata and the man who
never lets a week go by without being in the two’s Major Roy Thornton

September 8 Khao Kheow Stableford
1st Trevor Schirmer, 34pts
2nd BJ Smith, 32 pts
It was an Aussie one two at Khao Kheow on Wednesday when
Trevor Schirmer the sheep man simply sheared through the field to win the
stableford easily, beating his fellow Aussie BJ by two shots with Bob
Lindborg in third place. Commiserations must go to BJ who had twenty points
on the front nine but only twelve on the back nine. There were no two’s on
the day.

Phoenix Medal
1st Serge Straeten, net 71
2nd Fred Ewins, net 73 - c/b 31
3rd Milton Kirk 73 - c/b 34
The Mountain and Lakes courses of Phoenix proved to be a
formidable eighteen holes, with only one player breaking par. Pattaya
resident Serge Straeten had a frustrating round, but still managed to win by
two shots from ‘Mr. Compass’, Fred Ewins. Fred beat Milton Kirk on
countback to slide into second place.
The course was looking and playing very well, although scores on the day
did not reflect these conditions. Barry Traynor won the pot for the two’s.
Back at the Haven, Richard Livingston, resident PGA professional made the
presentations.

Royal Lakeside Stroke
The superbly conditioned Royal Lakeside Golf and Country
Club was host to a stroke play competition in one flight. The greens are
some of the best in the area and the fairways are a pleasure to walk on,
being well grassed and springy.
Jeff
Wylie
Big Aussie Jeff Wylie took first place on countback from
Clive Robinson both on net 64s. Richard Kubicki was third on net 67 with Big
Jim Flanagan fourth on net 70 and in fifth was Old Arthur Bailey on
countback from Pete Galle, both on net 71.
Thursday September 9 Khao
Kheow Stableford
When you play this course you understand what it is to
play a real tough Championship course. One slip, one bad shot and you are in
trouble and let us face it at our level it will happen constantly. On this
day the test was the B & C Layouts, not my personal favourite test,
liking the A Layout, but what a test, you have to be awake to survive. On
this day the weather was pretty good with light winds, and the course was in
it’s usual fine condition, so let us get at it and see if we can take it
apart or at least play well.
Brian
Noguer, B Flight winner at Khao Kheow.
The answer to this is no, we didn’t take the course
apart, as is usual the course took us apart. Of the last 100 people we have
sent out to play Khao Kheow, only two people have beaten their handicap, and
one of them by only one shot, and you think this is not a killer of a
course? But what a pleasure to play if you want to pit your skills against
the best. Maybe it shows the handicaps are correct on a tough course.
After a pleasant walk around on a quiet course, the
winner of the A Flight, 0 to 15, was Keith Emerson with 34 points, with an
in form Clive Robinson second with 33 points and Doug Williams, a 2
handicapper, coming third with 32 points.
In the B Flight the winner was Brian Noguer with 34
points, second was Richard Kubicki with 30 points and in third was Ebrahim
with 29 points on countback over Dave Richardson.
As can be seen the Course won again, but one of these
days!
John Preddy wins at Burapha
P.S.C. golf with The Bunker
On Monday September 6 Burapha Golf
Club was the setting for the boys from The Bunker. Playing courses C and D
from the blue tees on a cool and breezy day after a miserable six months
John Preddy at last found his form to take first prize with a net 73. In
second place Ian Phillips weighed in with a net 75 and steady George
Redgewell was third returning to the clubhouse with a net 76. Nearest the
pins prizes went to Ian Phillips, Binny Sorrensson and Vic Simmons.
Khao Kheow
Country Club
Thursday September 9 saw The Bunker Boys travel to
Khao Kheow Country Club for a stableford competition playing the B and C
courses off the yellow tees.
First
time golfer and Thailand visitor, Arthur Ramshaw enjoyed his day out at
Khao Kheow.
The day was cool and overcast, the greens played fast
but true and the rough was treacherous proving extremely difficult to
get out.
Mick Ramshaw came back to top form just in time for
The Bunker’s annual championship challenge to take first prize with 34
stableford points. Mick was closely followed home by Frank Pilkington
with 33 points and third place was claimed by Mike Allidi a further
point behind.
Arthur Ramshaw visiting Thailand for the first time
and playing his first ever game here struggled with the long par fours
and blamed his miserable 14 stableford points on the over friendly
hostesses, late nights and heavy drinking but vows to do better in the
championship challenge next week!
Arthur had a little consolation by claiming one of the ‘near
pins’ prizes on the infamous ‘Island’ hole, Mike Allidi and Frank
Pilkington won the other two.
Eddie Kristianson beats the odds
PSC golf from Three Sisters Bar
Monday September 6 - Some thought it was a great day for golf and others
would like to forget it. Again the weather was good and a host of golfers
made their handicap or better. A couple of golfers would like to start over
again.
Eddie
Kristianson (right) took the honors at Siam last week while Bill Key (left)
was left holding the bag.
Eddie Kristianson, recovering from his gall bladder
operation and hepatitis shots, has lost a lot of weight due not drinking a
gallon of beer a day. I guess not drinking and losing weight brought his
game into focus as he hammered the field into submission by the 15th hole.
He had already accumulated about 40 points by that time and finished with 47
to end his round and took top honors for the day. Jim Tully and Herb
Ishinaga, playing in the same group, managed 46 points between them as they
hacked their way around the course watching Eddie demolish the field.
In a distant second was Bob Benda. Bob managed 38 points,
which normally is within one or two points of the winner. Monday there was
no chance. Following a stroke behind at 37 was Ian Edwards. Most golfers
managed to shoot their handicaps but could not cut the mustard for the day.
At first it looked like Jim Tully had again worked his way into the
cellar position. Coming in with 20 points. Jim had resigned himself to
holding the bag once again. As he sat mulling about the fact at Caddy Shack
Two, his saviour came walking in. A winner two weeks ago, Bill Key managed
to lose his game like the rest of us do at times, and came in with an
astonishing 16 points. At first we thought Bill was humoring Tully but “lo
and behold” it was his score for the day. (A big smile was seen on
Tully’s face)
Joe Patchenally shines at Bangpra
PSC golf from Bobby Joe’s 60s Bar
Another fine Tuesday for golf at the Bangpra course.
Starting at 8 a.m. for an inventive Bobby Joe’s breakfast at the 60s Bar
and then we headed out at 9 a.m. for the course and got down to some very
enjoyable golf. The course was in fine shape and the greens were in
exceptional condition. Everyone had a fine time and a few unusual shots.
After a thoroughly enjoyable day on the links we settled down in the
clubhouse for a few cold ones while the scores and lucky draws were
tallied. The star of the day was Joe Patchenally.
Some of
the serving staff with Joe (center), big Peter and Max
Joe just picked up his clubs recently after a few years off and was
quite pleased with him self as we all were. Back at the 60s Bar the
presentations were made and the prizes awarded and a fine barbeque of baby
pork and chicken was served up with a batch of salads. A good day was had
by all.
Bob Wighton drives to victory and disaster
IPGC Bunker Boys from the OK Corral
A pleasantly warm day and a beautifully presented golf course at welcomed
the Boys from the OK Corral on Tuesday, September 7. They took to the
Phoenix Mountain and Lakes nines for their weekly medal competition.
The cut at the OK is always a tight one and this time,
with the line drawn at fifteen and under, once again some reputable golfers
found themselves in the second flight.
Steve
Nowell, victorious at Treasure Hill.
Bill Hewitt was one such player and his net 78 held out
no hopes until the rest of the flight returned and he found himself in third
place, one behind Richard Wardell who had been “rule-ninteened” after a
string of remarkable successes. A similar fate had happened to Brian Bellis
but his nerve held and his net 73 was good enough to take the divisional
award. In division one, John Healy shot a steady net 76, chasing Steve
Nowell and his one-over 73 but all were left in the shadow of Aussie Bob
Wighton.
Bob drives phenomenally, often launching the ball more
than 300 yards and on a forgiving course like Phoenix this can be a
tremendous advantage. He only dropped three shots to par and his gross 75,
net 66, was a fine testament to his golf. Later his driving was to be his
downfall as his motorcycle took a mind of its own and he was unseated in the
middle of Third Road at rush hour. He slinked off to the OK Corral, head in
bloodied hands, pondering the opportunity he had almost certainly missed to
take on the challenge of Treasure Hill two days later. There were no birdie
two’s but the aforementioned Aussie received the bananas for his
driving...on the way home, not on the course!
Typically Tough at
Treasure Hill
On Thursday September 9, the Bunker Boys travelled to
faraway Treasure Hill to play their weekly stableford event, which was
dedicated to their old friend Norman Brooks on the anniversary of his sad
passing one year ago. What madness drove Mr. Loy to choose this venue is
unknown but he nevertheless managed to find nineteen followers, similarly
bent on self-destruction on a course that was perfectly presented but
perennially tough to play. The cut was at sixteen and division two golfers
found the course quite beyond them.
Richard Wardell, so often below par over the last six
weeks, only managed to score 27 points but still took third place, one
behind Ian Phillips on 28. The canny old head of PJ Redmond held his round
together to post a score of 29 points which took the flight’s major prize.
Division one saw a better fist being made and Al “Ace” McGrory shook off
the abomination of his previous round to record a creditable 33 points and
secure third place. One point ahead was Bill Hewitt, no doubt delighted to
be reunited with his Leeds colleagues, Keith Hector and Harry Cowling.
Standing proudly on top of the podium was Steve Nowell and his level par 36
points was just reward for “thinking” his way around the course.
Harry Cowling had the temerity to scoop the rolled-over Super Sawng award
less than twenty-four hours after arriving in the Kingdom but there was only
one rival to Mr. Loy and his 20 points for the ‘Banana Booby’ and Barry
Pethig, having played the course for the first time, still wore a
shell-shocked expression as he took the award. For everybody else it was a
relief it was all over!

Green Valley White Tees Stableford
1st A Flight: Kevin Taylor, 38 pts
2nd A Flight: John Hanley, 38 pts
3rd A Flight: Bill Macey, 37 pts
1st B Flight: Noy Pommoen, 43 pts
2nd B Flight: Frank Pilkington, 38 pts
3rd B Flight: Ray Dell, 36 pts
Near Pins: #13 Roger Yabsley; #16 Klaus Schackt
This weeks accounting will be pithy since our normal
scribe is off to Ireland getting acquainted with formally unknown blood
ties. Our normal Sunday outing at Green Valley had fresh faces in the first
place postings: Kevin Taylor’s 20 points on the back nine insured count
back victory over John Hanley’s meager 19 points and Noy Pommoen’s
splendid 43 points left the boys of B flight wondering.

Khao Kheow Yellow or White Stableford
1st Yellow Flight: Chicka Smith, 38 pts
2nd Yellow Flight: Jack Grindvolt, 37 pts
1st White Flight: Klaus Schackt, 40 pts
2nd White Flight: Eddie Blackwell, 38 pts
Near Pins: #B8 Klaus Schackt
As is customary at Lewiinski’s, we like to play off
several tee boxes to afford all an enjoyable day. Khao Kheow did not let us
down with its superb design, immaculate condition and very affordable price.
Like being snake bit from down under, Chicka Smith grabbed yellow flight
honors with a respectable 38 points to nudge steady-Freddy Jack by one. Two
locals dominated the white flight, with Klaus analyzing his way to the top
spot with an outstanding 40 points much to Eddie’s chagrin. To prove he
knows what courses to play by checking the numbers on his computer, Klaus
nearly aced the signature hole, B8 for near pin honors.

1st A Flight: Steve Mascari, 37 pts
2nd A Flight: Eric O’Brien, 36 pts
1st B Flight: Klaus Schiffer, 39 pts
2nd B Flight: Heinz Roembell, 38 pts
The greens were tricky and the fairways hard as the field
found the course playing as difficult as usual so it was not surprising to
find the venerable Lewiinski’s owner at the top of the leader board in A
flight with 37 points followed by the affable Eric O’Brien one point
behind. B flight boys seemed to fair slightly better with the best of the
day scores being posted by our German friends Klaus and Heinz 39 and 38
points respectively. The field was disappointed that we had not monkey
sightings all day, better luck next time Kevin.

Pairs Scramble
1st Klaus Schackt & An Kasavane, net 69.5
2nd Eddie Blackwell & Apple Jitchana, net 70.2
3rd Joe Mooneyham & Rick Sharp, net 71.7
The dilemma when organizing scrambles is what cut to make
with handicaps, 1/0th, 3/8th 50%, ask anyone their opinion and you get pros
and cons for each. The bottom line our guys have figured out that if you
can’t hit it long get a partner who can play from the red tees to make up
the yardage. Statistics lead Klaus to this conclusion and it surely paid off
with his first place finish riding An’s driving to first place honor’s
with a net 69.5 (62.6 or 59.5). Another mix pair, Eddie & Apple,
finished with a net 70.2 (62.5 or 59) capturing second place honors. The
best team playing from the same tees, Joe & Rick came in with a net 71.7
(65.4 or 62.5). The results would have been slightly different with
different handicap adjustments; next time maybe we will use the square of
the sums of the handicap minus the age of the oldest member playing from the
lightest colored tees.
Big Shift in the standings with 4 weeks remaining
Pattaya Sports Club Friday Bowling League
A big shift in the standings took place on Friday with
Cafe Kronborg moving from third to second place, Q Cars from second to
third, Cafe Ole and Jack & Tar from tied for fifth to tied for fourth.
VFW Post 9876 and Brother D were tied for fourth and now they are tied for
fifth. With only four weeks remaining in this league and a total of 16
points up for grabs seven teams are still in the trophy race with three
teams needing a miracle to win one. In this weeks bowling, first place Three
Sisters took three points from Q Cars.
200
bowlers Mio, Somrak, Tue, Bill, Morn and Leo.
Cafe Kronborg led by Captain Kran’s 563 series and Tui,
who is steadily improving, rolled a 523 series to sweep all four points from
Brother D. Dang and Somrak both rolled 529 series to lead Cafe Ole to a four
point win over Alt Koelle. Jack & Tar took four points from VFW Post
9876 with Morn bowling a 202 game, 539 series, Mai knocked down 503 and Aun
added 501 for the win. Captain Bill Key’s team did not win a point but not
because of Bill as he bowled games of 153, 203 and 225 for a 581 series.
House of the Golden Coin and Nam Tip split their series at two points
apiece. Captain Mio, Golden Coin, bowled the best series of the day as she
knocked down 613 pins with games of 180, 221 and 212. Spare bowlers bowled
some good games as Tue rolled a 205 game, 534 series, Scott 534 series and
Leo with a 205 game and 526-pin total.

The Square Ring
By Howie Reed
As predicted here, but of course, long time WBC bantam
king Veerapol Nakornluang successfully retained his title last week. He had
no trouble in disposing of challenger Cecilio Santos with a unanimous
decision (119-109, 118-110, 117-111) at Chaophraya Dam’s ground in
Chainart Province, Thailand. Always nice when The Square Ring gets something
right. Isn’t it delicious though when someone says something really stupid
and it comes back to take a rather large chunk out of the back of their
laps? Last week I quoted Don King as he called Lemon Brewster the savior of
boxing. I ended the Square Ring with, “Now back to this “savior of
boxing deal”. The win for Brewster propels him into a fight with Evandler
Holyfield.” Maybe not. The rumor out there is that WBO Champ Brewster came
out of his fight against Kali Meehan with an injury to his jaw. That would
postpone a match against Holyfield who no one but the two fighters and the
promoter care about.
It may have come to your attention that I admitted to
falling sleep during Brewster-Meehan. Seems I wasn’t the only one. James
“Lights Out” Toney didn’t care much for the fight either. “It was
like two friends touching each other. “I’ll touch you, then you touch
me.” It was garbage. It was so boring I fell asleep with the dog.” Now
the next question Mr. Square Ring is, “Have you ever fallen asleep with a
dog?” Nope but woke up with a bunch of ‘em.
There are fans from the UK that think either Danny
Williams (he beat Tyson) or Audley Harrison would be riding in on the white
horse to pull boxing from the “means reds” as Holly Golightly called
them in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. May be fact but not for a while. Audley
Harrison (17-0, 12 KOs) is out of action until 2005 after suffering an
injury to his left hand while preparing for a November 13 fight in the U.S.
The injury was diagnosed as a ligament tear to his index finger; He’ll
travel to New York for surgery probably staying in the USA to ply his trade.
“Between not being able to make the Skelton fight, the ruthless decision
by the BBC to end our relationship and now this hand injury, I feel
overwhelmed by the collective circumstances and am looking forward to
putting an end to 2004,” said Harrison. Mr. Harrison the BBC ruthlessly
ended their association with you cause you can’t fight a lick. Granted
that condition doesn’t stop you from being a World Champion as today’s
heavyweight division indicates.
Then there’s “Dangerous” Danny Williams. Both
regular readers known that the Square Ring’s opinion of promoter Frankie
Warren is not very high. He’s a bum! Directly after Williams whacked out
Tyson he signed with Warren. Immediately Warren announced that Williams
would fight a suddenly rejuvenated Oleg Maskaev on October 9. “Time out,
Maskaev rejuvenated?” Yep as strange as it seems Oleg’s won his last 8
with 7 KO’s. One of those was a KO (in 2) over Julius Francis who beat
Williams. Problem with Williams-Maskaev was that Warren had neglected to
talk with Maskaev’s promoters. Instead Maskaev wants a fight with Vitali
Klitschko who he KO’d in 2 when they both were amateurs. “I’m ready
and able to beat any of them. Are you listening Klitschko, Brewster,
Williams, Toney, Holyfield, Hoffman, Barrett, Byrd, Ruiz, Tyson, Tua and
McCline? It’s time to elevate the quality of the division and have the top
heavyweights fight each others, and see who is left standing. I promise you
when the dust settles it will be Oleg Maskaev standing in the center of the
ring.” That’s what Oleg did say. Nice try but looks like it’ll be
Klitschko-Williams on December 4.
There are a plethora of boxing contest this weekend. They
stretch from The Pavilions in Plymouth England where Steven Bendall (21-0)
meets Scott Dann (19-2) to The State Sports Centre in Homebush Bay Australia
where Lovemore N’Dou (39-7) fights a TBA to Madrid and the Mansfield
Tavern in Aussie. Maybe some local interest but the big fight of the week
and maybe the entire boxing year will take place Sunday morning (Pattaya
Time) in Las Vegas where the Golden One, Oscar DeLaHoya (37-3), meets up
with Bernard Hopkins (44-2-1) for the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO Middleweight
titles. It’s probably the big fight of the year if for no other reason
than the sorry state of boxing.
Since late 1999 Oscar has had 9 bouts. He’s 6-3 with
the loses coming to Shane Mosley (twice) and Felix Trinidad. His last out
against German Felix Strum (20-1) was a stinker in that many though the
German had won. This is not vintage Oscar. Bernard Hopkins is another story.
Boy is he another story!
He’s had only one meaningful fight since 1997 and that
was against Felix Trinidad (40-1) in 2001. He laid a 12 round KO on Trinidad
for the only loss of his career. Prior to and after Hopkins faced more
stiffs than a “bar girl” when the fleet’s in. Buffalo Bob Arum ,
DeLaHoya promoter, has whined about the officiating in Nevada in all of his
recent fights. There is no reason why the cork won’t come out of the
bottle this time as all three judges are from Nevada. “Gentleman... start
your whine.” Hopkins is the heavy favorite and should score a KO. The
problem with a KO is that Oscar has never been knocked out and a KO would
mean no mega bucks rematch.
Good guy and frequent Pattaya visitor “Dapper” Dave
Stewart (13-0) was in boxing action last Friday night at the fabled Wembley
Arena in Merry Old England. He was on the supporting card of the
Cruiserweight battle between David Haye-Carl Thompson. Thompson won easily.
The “Viper’s” opponent for the night was Bobby Vanzie (26-4-1) who had
the edge in experience. That made no difference as Scottish born but London
based Dave Stewart stepped up and out-pointed former British lightweight
champion Bobby Vanzie, Way to go Dave.
WBC #9 Jr. fly Wandee Singhawancha (a.k.a. as Wandee Chor
Chareon) of Thailand stopped veteran Ernesto Rubillar from the Philippines
in eight rounds in order to win the vacant WBC-Intl crown at 108-pound. The
new champ Wandee improved his record to 42-7 (10KOs), while Rubillar dropped
to 35-27-7 (13KOs). The fight was held in an open-air arena at Chumphon, in
South Thailand, before 10,000 fans last Friday.
Tip of the hat, light up a quality cigar and open a bottle of Phuket
Island Lager. Why? That is besides the obvious reason of a Friday afternoon
in paradise. Today we’ll tip one for 41 year old waiter Uthen Theekayu who
vowed to walk from his home in Rayong province to Ratchaburi province if
Manus Boonchamnong won the Olympic Gold. The 250 mile trip took 8 days and
resulted in hurt knees and swollen feet. Hundreds greeted Uthen when he
arrived but one of the greeters wasn’t the victorious fighter. The Gold
Medal was at a resort in Hua Hin awaiting an audience with His Majesty King
Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great. The weary Uthen was taken to Hua Hin. I’ll
drink to that.
