Somsak Singhchatchawan successfully defended his PABA (Pacific Asian Boxing Association) Super Bantam weight title against Indonesia’s Simpson Buta Buta last Friday afternoon at Mini Siam. The headline 122lb bout saw Somsak aggressively defend his belt as the two pugilists traded their fair share of hits, but in the end it was Somsak who outpointed his opponent 116-112, 117-111, 116-113 in the 12-round fight.

Match referee declares Somsak Singhchatchawan the PABA Super Bantamweight champion. Somsak defeated Indonesia’s Simpson Buta Buta 116-112, 117-111, 116-113 at Mini Siam on Friday August 13.

The first round had each man sizing the other up before launching a flurry of attacks. Somsak’s force, almost equal to the Indonesian’s, had both men suffering from deep cuts to eyebrows in the following round in which they pounded each other mercilessly.

The crowd went wild as the barrage of fists continued and as Somsak’s confidence grew, he maintained his stronghold on the points tally till the 12th round for his 16th successive title defence.

Somsak Singhchatchawan (red trunks) successfully defended his PABA Super Bantamweight title against Indonesia’s Simpson Buta Buta. He unanimously outpointed his opponent last Friday, August 13 at the match held at Mini Siam in Pattaya.

In the second title bout, Terdsak “See Super Tech Yim” defeated his Filipino opponent Jessar Alcazar with a TKO in the second round. Terdsak retained his WBO Feather weight title, sending the crowd into frenzy.

Fight fans were well satisfied as both Saengpetch S. Sakulaphant and Gongthoranee Surasak outpointed Edwin Opote and Leed Sabu in their respective bouts. The only KO of the day was when Terdkiat Jantrdaeng put Samart Lukporkhun on the canvas to win his fight.

Tourism and Sports Minister Sontaya Khunplome and local dignitaries applauded the afternoon of boxing as proceeds from the event are to be distributed as scholarships to children from 36 schools in Pattaya and Banglamung.

Hot aerial action at the annual Pattaya Sepak Takraw Championships

Decha Chalermyart

Over 40 teams in three categories took part in the highflying annual Pattaya Cup Sepak Takraw Championships held last weekend at the Nongphankhae School, south of the city. The teams battled it out over two full days of action to see who would take home the coveted Pattaya Cup winners trophy and the 10,000 baht prize money.

Spikes and volleys Sepak Takraw style.

The second-placed team received 7,000 baht and a trophy, and those who came third took home 5,000 baht.

The finals were held last Sunday afternoon. International rules applied during the competition.

The WNSR (A) defeated the Lungsai in the final round. Second place went to the Puk Eakasarn team, while the Pattaya School No. 8 team ran in at third place. An additional class, the Takraw Buang, where each team scores points for kicking the “ball” into the basket, saw the Jorsao team take home the 4,000 baht first prize.

The event opened on Saturday morning with mayor Niran Wattanasartsathorn, Chanyuth Hengtrakul, advisor to the Minister of Tourism and Sports, and city councillors joining the opening ceremonies as spectators gathered to watch the event.

Matches are composed of three sets. The first team scoring 15 points wins a set. The first team winning two sets wins the match. If both teams are tied 13-13, the first team to score 13 points may choose to decide the set through a five-point match. If the teams are tied at 14-14, the first team to score 14 points may choose to decide the set through a three-point match.

Green Valley Medal

On Tuesday August 10 the Boys from The Bunker visited the lovely Green Valley Country Club to play a Medal competition.

On a beautiful sunny but windy day the white tees were placed well back making driving very difficult especially for the more senior citizens. The difficult conditions became more apparent as the scorecards came in when it was clear that nobody had broken par on the day.

Some of The Bunker Boys waiting to Tee-off.

With a large turnout the golfers were split into two divisions. In division A low handicapper Keith Smithson, on his farewell game before returning to England, again showed his class by winning with a net 73 showing the rest of the field how to handle the long tee shots!

Coming in second and third in division A were John Hughes and David Johnson with Net 77 and Net 79 respectively.

In division B the higher handicappers found it much tougher with Ben Findon coming out on top, Neil Griffin and Lez Hall tied for second place and Mick Ramshaw came in third - all of these players shot rounds in the 80s!

The Near Pins were won by Keith Smithson (2), Michael Andersson and John Hughes.

Khao Kheow Country Club Friday 13th

On the traditionally unlucky date of Friday 13th The Bunker Boys travelled to Khao Kheow Country Club for their regular stableford competition. The date must have been on the player’s mind because the scores were dreadful!

On a course renowned for long and tough holes and playing off the yellow tees, best on the day was Mick Ramshaw followed home in second place by ‘Skinny’ Blair Newton and third place being claimed by Colin Wilkes. The Near Pins were won by ‘Skinny’, Vic Simmonds and Neil Griffin. No mishaps occurred on the course so the golfers felt they had escaped any bad luck - until they returned to their transport!

Lez Hall having some fun with a caddy.

One player’s car had a puncture while another car had an alarm and immobiliser that decided to play pranks by blasting out it’s siren and refusing to start until it was ready. This happened to be a good hour later when the weary golfers were eventually able to return to The Bunker for some much needed food and liquid refreshments. We hope there are no more Friday the 13th this golfing season!

Next month The Bunker will be holding their annual Golf Championship competition with plenty of trophies and prizes up for grabs - all golfer’s with valid handicaps are welcome to play - watch this space!

Don’t forget, you can get the latest golf schedules for The Bunker Boys and information about all other sporting activities at The Bunker Bar by visiting our website @ www.bunkerboysgolf.com.

Hi-Lo winners Kristienson and Brook shine at Khao Kheow

41st PSC Monthly Members tournament

Friday August 13 Khao Kheow

Driving to the course, Bob Benda came up with the reminder that this was Friday the 13th, and came up with the comment that on a really tough course like Khao Kheow anyone who shot level, net 72 in the A & B Flight or 36 points in the C & D Flights, would probably win the Flight. Remember A & B Flights are played Stroke and C, D and L Flights are played stableford. Naturally his comments were met with amusement, because with 76 players on the day, we knew that people would come out of the woodwork, Flights are very rarely won on net handicap in the monthly tournaments. Would Bob prove correct or we poor incompetents.

A Flight winner Bill Plath.

Khao Kheow is a real golfers course, designed by a sadist for masochists, this is a course that punishes the bad shot severely and rewards the good shot. Pete Dye has a lot to answer for, but what a fine course he has designed. Certainly in the vanguard of the fine courses in the area, and a course that once it gets you, does not let go, it is like running in quicksand. I remember one good golfer coming in to the Cafe Kronborg and saying he had lost 19 balls in a round. The franchise for water balls must be a real money earner.

B Flight winner Ian Edwards.

Booking in, found the normal team of Bernie and Jeff, efficient as usual, and a nice start to the day. Then on to the course to play A & B layouts, a pretty tough test, and what is this I see a bit of wind, No, it is very windy! Still this will just make it interesting, will it not? Out on the course the fairways looked in fine condition, the greens seemed fine if, a little tricky, as the ball seemed to have a mind of it’s own and refused to go into the hole, still surely this was only the four ball I played in. The course seemed fine and I managed to bimble around the first nine in 38 shots, surely the course was being taken apart by others, sure the strong wind was a pain but there are some fine golfers out there. Well the back nine bit back, and three puts and several missed short puts of less than three foot set the knees knocking. Surely the rest were, as is normal, playing fine golf.

Alan Pearce (right) presents Chris John C, Flight winner with trophy.

Back in the clubhouse as the scores came in, it became apparent that this had been a day when the course had won, and of the 76 golfers only two players managed to break their handicap, and the ‘highest points’ prize was won with 37 points. So the ‘main result’ is Pete Dye 74, Pattaya Sports Club, 2. However, as has been said, you only have to win the competition on the day and I rather suspect there were a lot of ‘If only’s’. It has to be said that Bob Benda is a wily old fox and we will listen to him much closer next time.

Saen Jaroenwong winner of the ladies flight.

In the A Flight, the pattern was set for all the flights when, as Bob prophesised, the winning score was a Net 72 by Bill Plath. Bill is always a steady golfer and had one of the best scores of the day. In second with a net 75 was previous ‘golf chairman’ Dennis Willet and in third was Jeff Wylie with a net 76.

The B Flight was pretty much par for the day when surprised golfers came to the fore after winning in their Flight. The winner of the B Flight was Ian Edwards with a net 76 ahead of a countback for second with net 77 won by Phil Taylor with Peter Davis in Third.

Winners Eddie Kristienson (left) , high points and Derek Brook (right), low gross.

The C Flight was won by the golf chairman Chris John with 36 points. In the context of the day this was a pretty noteworthy score, particularly as he had all the aggravation of running the competition, those who have run them know how difficult it is to play well. In second with 33 points was Mark Guthrie and in third was John Dearden with a net 32.

The D Flight followed the theme of the day, what a tough one. The winner was Ken Ince with 34 points, ahead of Alex Backlund with 33 points and Pete King with 30 points.

So to the Ladies, and with so few only two places were provided. As the day had played, the ladies did quite well when Saen Jaroewong won with 36 points ahead of Nora Haugsjordet with 30 points.

On to the two main Prizes and it was particularly noteworthy that Eddie Kristianson came in with 37 points to win the high points prize. Eddie has not been well of late and has been under the knife, so this hopefully will be a major tonic to him. The Low Gross was won by Derek Brook with a Gross 82, modesty does not allow me to dwell on it, still if you want to buy me a beer! Come back Rick, all is forgiven.

The presentation was carried out by the golf chairman, ably assisted by his emcee Alan Pearce. Chris thanked his helpers, the Kheo Kheow staff, who also partially sponsored the day, and in particular his Sponsors. In particular PSC, Misty’s, 60s Bar, McAlisters, Shennanigans, Blue Parrot, Tahitian Queen, Green Bottle, Pattaya City Golf and Khao Kheow.

Special mention has to be made on the improvements to this competition since it’s inception, and credit must go to a succession of golf chairmen and their golf committees who have worked hard on these Monthly Competitions. T.T.F.N.

Clive Bruce’s Mug is on the Mug

IPGC Golf From Lewiinksi’s

Sunday August 8 Green Valley White Tees Monthly Medal

1st A Flight: Clive Bruce, net 67
2nd A Flight: Julian Clarke, net 69
3rd A Flight: Guy Billings, net 70
1st B Flight: Larry Nicholas, net 70
2nd B Flight: John Hillier, net 74
3rd B Flight: An Kaesavane, net 75
1st C Flight: Alec Hoare, net 70
2nd C Flight: Spot the Dog, net 72
3rd C Flight: Sean Murphy, net 73
Near Pins: #13 Robbie Bennett; #16 Jim Wickstrom

It seems that each week he receives a compliment for his ever improving play, and there is no reason that should not continue as Clive Bruce put the Silver Tanker, emblematic of Lewiinski’s August Monthly Medal, on his shelf. Clive did so by clearing Julian Clarke’s 69 and the 70s of A Flight third place Guy Billings, B Flight winner Larry Nicholas and C Flight Alec Hoare. Alec was followed in C Flight by ‘S the D’ at level to handicap 72 and the swashbuckling Sean Murphy at 73. Larry from Mulligan’s was trailed into the clubhouse by John Hillier at 74 and the belle of the ball, An Kaesavane, at 75. An did have to go to count back to edge Joe Mooneyham for that bronze. A couple of Sugar Shack boys, in the person of Robbie Bennett and Jim Wickstrom, netted the Near Pins. For the fourth time in five months the raffle prize of a golf bag, bankrolled by owner Steve Mascari, was carted off by the fairer sex. Lyn Foote hardly had the opportunity to appreciate her prize before her husband, John, started to fill the pockets with his own gear.

Tuesday August 10 Khao Kheow A & B Yellow or White Stableford

1st Yellow Flight: Steve Mascari, 38 pts
2nd Yellow Flight: John Emmerson, 37 pts
3rd Yellow Flight: Phil Groves, 32 pts
1st White Flight: Nat Meesuk, 43 pts
2nd White Flight: Mike Craighead, 41 pts
Near Pin: #B8 Ian Ashenden

No one questions that Khao Kheow plays tough from either the White or the Yellow tees. But the bombers still get enjoyment from bombing while the more physically restricted of us like to have some chance of reaching the green in regulation. That being the case, and when the mix of the field suggests it, the Flights on the day are divided by those who want to play the back tees (yellow) and those that prefer the forward men’s tees (white). The ladies play the tees in front of their chosen flight.

Steve Mascari led the testosterone division, which played off the 6300+ yellow tees, with a very creditable 38 points, just edging golf manager John Emmerson’s 37. In a crawl to the finish line Phil Groves used count back to relegate Johnny McHugh and his less strategically garnered 32 points to the welfare lines. Continuing with the hormonal comparisons of the two flights, it was left to Nat Meesuk to cop the White Tee Flight with 43 points. Showing no lack of ‘power’ himself, Mike Craighead danced into the forties with 41 points and in so doing walked away with the second place allowance.

Wednesday August 11 Bangpra White Tees Stroke/Medal

1st A Flight: Guy Billings, net 67
2nd A Flight: Eddie Blackwell, net 68
1st B Flight: Danny Dyke, net 70
2nd B Flight: Dave Marriott, net 71
Near Pin: #17 Guy Billings

Guy Billings continued the fine play that has marked his visit and his considerable golfing career as he put a gross 72, net 67 whupping on old friend Bangpra. He needed every bit of it to edge golfing’s answer to Beau Brummel, Eddie Blackwell, and his net 68. In a continuing progression, dapper Danny Dyke walked off with B Flight thanks to his net 70, thus leaving Dave Marriott second at net 71.

Friday August 13 Phoenix
Mountain & Lakes Blue or
White Tees Stroke Medal

1st Blue Flight: Steve Mascari, net 73
2nd A Flight: Oddvar Rykke, net 74
1st B Flight: Ben Findon, net 67
2nd B Flight: Mike Craighead, net 70
Near Pin: #L7 John McHugh

There is a pattern developing here. We move the tees back and Mascari wins. It’s great to be the president of the society! Steve for the second time on the week played the longer of the two competition courses and brought home gold both times. This time his net 73 edging the 74s of mid-handicapper Oddvar Rykke’s and low handicapper Eddie Blackwell. Oddvar had the better of Eddie in the old count back, however. In the still challenging White Tee Flight, Ben Findon went low with net 67 and left now steady Mike Craighead spending the bridesmaid’s dowry for the second competition running.

PSC golf from the Cafe Kronborg

Monday August 9: Treasure Hill Golf And Country Club Stableford

The Treasure Hill and Country Club was host for a stableford competition in two Flights, A Flight 0 to 18, and B Flight 19 and above. The course on the day was in very good condition and is improving every month.

Bill wins with flower power.

Bill Plath took the A Flight with 36 points, Alan Sullivan was second with 34 points and in third place was Thomas Johansson with 33 points. In the B Flight the ever improving Aussie won for the umpteenth time of late and had two five point chip in birdies on the back par three’s to take the B Flight with 39 points. Wayne Koch was second with 38 points and Big Pete Galle was third with 33 points.

Wednesday August 11 Eastern Star Stableford

It was a pleasure to once again play this fine layout on a day that promised rain and delivered only on the last few holes. There are some advantages to running these competitions and being able to tee off first.

A Flight winner Thomas Johansson.

This course has always had the best and the worst and on this day it was no different. It certainly has one of the best layouts, with fine fairways and very testing water hazards. On this day it also had the best chicken legs at it’s rest stops, I or any of my co-players have tasted. Tasty and crispy a real treat. But I digress, as this course has always been in the forefront of the culinary art.

To the course’s worst point, as usual, it has always had one of the worst sets of greens. The course has made a big effort to improve them and for a while they really became quite good, but now ‘the lurgy’ is back and the greens leave a lot to be desired. You pay your money and you take your choice, for me they are playable but for some dissenting voices they are not.

B Flight winner Dick Worden.

This is all very sad because apart from the greens the course is up among the best. ‘User friendly’ and the best restaurant, what more can one want. Yes I know good greens. I shall be back, the good outweighs the bad.

On the course we played against time as the storm clouds gathered, and over the last few holes the rain lashed down, but who cares, it was warm. Well one or two did but it made them use the hot showers. Always a pleasure when it rains.

As we sat in the restaurant and I delved into my ‘chef’s salad’ followed by good old cholesterol on a plate with ‘pancakes, butter and maple syrup’, the results were worked out. Never a problem for me here what to order, I just keep taking the pills.

In the A Flight we had the coming back to form of a golfer who admits quite candidly that his handicap is too high and should be at least 3 shots less. He may get his wish and come down from a high 7 handicap. Eat your hearts out. So the winner of the A Flight, 0 to 17, was Thomas Johansson with a fine 40 points, (Gross 75 for those without a calculator). Second also with a round in the 70s, and totally messing up the 18th, was Rick Evans with 37 points and in third was the third single handicapper shooting well with Jeff Wylie having 36 points.

In the B Flight, 18 upwards, the winner was Dick Worden on a countback over Evan Trotman, both having 38 points. In third was Wayne Koch with 34 points. T.T.F.N

Steve Nowell fired the day’s lowest gross score at Phoenix

IPGC Bunker Boys at the OK Corral

The Bunker Boys chose Phoenix as the venue for their weekly medal tournament on Tuesday, August 10, and found the Mountain and Ocean nines in fine condition with very fast greens, powdery bunkers and some decidedly ‘dodgy’ pin placements, an art in which Phoenix certainly specializes. Many of the holes were set on slopes, contrary to the advice given to green keepers by the R and A, and it made putting something of a lottery. This had an effect on the scores in both divisions with the second flight golfers suffering more. In division two Barry Pethig hid the embarrassment of his net 81 to pick up the third place prize whilst Brian Bellis played steady golf to take the runner-up award with net 75.

Steve Nowell carded a gross 78 for the day’s best gross at Phoenix.

PJ Redmond once again took the main honours with a fine sub par round of net 70. In division one Bob Wighton shouldered his way into third place with a consistent performance, his 72 being just two shots off the top place. This was shared by Harry Riley and Steve Nowell and their 70s bore testimony to their concentration on and around the greens. Steve Nowell’s excellent 78 was the day’s best gross whilst at the other end of the scale playing partner Len Jones dropped fourteen (yes, fourteen!) shots on the par threes to throw his hat in the ring for the bananas. There were a brace of birdie twos and Bob Wighton and Terry Lockhart scooped the pool for their accuracy on the Mountain eighth. Former Club Captain at his home course in England, William Macey, fired his first birdie of the day on the twelfth hole and proceeded to ruin his card on the next by playing the wrong ball. The thirteenth was certainly unlucky for William and this gave Mr. Loy the excuse to present him with his first Banana Booby, much to the amusement of the girls back at the OK Corral.

PSC golf from Bobby Joe’s 60s Bar

Tuesday August 10 Laem Chabang Stableford

The very name of Jack Nicklaus conjures up images of great golf. Well this is one of his creations and during Summer when the ‘rich visitors’ are not here, the locals can enjoy a Sportsday, and Bobby’s 60’s Bar now playing on a Tuesday can enjoy the day.

Bobby Joe with winners Trevor Carnahoff and Joe Albright.

Naturally this being a great day out, we had a really good turn out. Indeed we had to phone up and get more tee times and managed to squeeze a couple more four balls in.

The course as usual was in great condition and we managed to tee off a little early. The play flowed quite smoothly and in the circumstances the scores were really good. The A & B courses produce a good test of golf, but if you are hitting the ball well you can produce some good results.

Bobby Joe and Max Mathews with the technical winners.

Once you finish, it is a pleasure to sit outside and have a beer and watch the players finish on the fine B9 par 5. Indeed the view over the course and the sheer greenness of it all makes you wonder how they can keep it this green.

Back at the ranch over some of Bobby’s free food, we all relaxed whilst Bobby declared Trevor Carnahoff winner of the A Flight and Joe Albright winner of the B Flight. Then as is normal we all proceeded to pay for a hangover. T.T.F.N.

Winners: A Flight Trevor Carnahoff; Flight Joe Albright
Near Pins: Rick Evans, Ian Edwards, Joe Patch, Joe Albright, Jack Lenker
Long Putts: Tim Holt, Rick Evans, Joe Patch, Bob Benda

Harry Riley Celebrates his Birthday

IPGC TAGGS golf from The Haven

Monday August 9 Khao Kheow Medal White Tees

1st Guy Billings, 71
2nd Trevor Schirmer, 73 c/b 36
3rd Brian Kelly, 73 c/b 38

Following on from his previous week’s success and a handicap reduction from 7 to 6, Guy shot an impressive 76 nett on a fairly windy day when again there was little run on A & B layout. Having started with two bogeys, Guy then proceeded to play the next 6 holes in 1 under par for a gross 37 on A course. Trevor, Brian and Fred Ewins were there all the way until disaster struck all three on 17 & 18. First, Brian dumped his tee on the island hole into the water, bemoaning that the distance was between clubs, then Trevor triple bogeyed 18 and poor Fred finished with a Snowman to exclude him from the podium by one shot. No disappointment for Fred though, as he had already birdied A3 to claim the only 2 of the day and with a rollover, he walked away with more loot than the winner. To his credit Fred celebrated by ringing the bell to much applause!

Wednesday August 11 Green Valley 2 person Better Ball

1st William Macey & Bob Wightman, 67 c/b 33
2nd Roy Thornton & Bob Lindborg, 67 c/b 34

The winners, William Macey & Bob Wightman with Harry Riley (centre).

The day belonged to Harry Riley, celebrating his birthday with a special 2 person better ball stroke competition to which 32 golfers had signed-up to play. In the end, two failed to appear and love-struck Graham Davis, stayed in bed and left poor Brian Kelly without a partner. Still the day was a huge success and on 3/4 handicap, William & Bill, playing off 8 & 7 respectively, came home with a nett 67 to hold off Major Roy and Bob Lindborg on countback. No doubt their pair of 2s won the day. The ‘Odd Couple’ Dave Lee & Fred Ewins were just one shot adrift after leading at the halfway stage on 30 nett. The pairing of Mr. Loy & Bill Hewitt managed only 3 pars between them and would surely have walked away with the banana booby had Harry thought of it! Harry very kindly provided the prizes and buffet and Richard Livingston, the resident PGA professional, presented the prizes to winners and technical prizes to: Near Pins: Saranya #5 & 8, Richard Lyne #13 & Bob Wightman #17 Near Pin 2nd shot Nora Haugsjordet.

Long Drives: A: Mikael Anderson, B: Richard Lyne, Ladies: Oradee Kaesavane.

In the regular 2s competition, the pool was shared by William Macey, Bob Wightman, Saranya Riley, Fred Ewins & Richard Lyne. A splendid buffet was laid on by Khun Lumyai and everyone toasted wee Harry on his 49th (sic) birthday.

Friday August 13 Eastern Star Stableford

1st Peter Emslie, 38
2nd Roy Thornton, 36

After Harry’s fine birthday bash, it was business as usual and a fairly low turnout for the sadly deteriorating Eastern Star course, but in the strong windy conditions it was probably expected that with his vast experience of playing in Scotland, ‘Slammer’ would once again come to the fore and this time he held off Major ‘bridesmaid’ Roy, by carding a super 23 points on the back 9.

Hard on Roy’s heels were Dave, Fred and Guy all on 35 points. Guy managed and 11 in his round, whilst the ‘odd couple’ for once came thro strongly on the back with 18 & 19 points respectively, no doubt thoughts of a stopover in Bang Chang helped maintain their concentration! In the windy conditions, it was not surprising there were no 2s on the day, so again, it is rollover time on Monday.

PSC golf from the 3 Sisters

On Monday August 9 we had a good turn out of over twenty golfers. The weather was good - the rains have been keeping away and the scores are showing it. We had about a third of the field matching their handicaps or better.

Winner Gerry Carpenter (right) with Cellar Dweller Jim Tully

At the top of the list this week were three golfers tied at 39 points each. Normally it would have taken 40 points or better but handicaps are coming down to match their scores. John Gibson, Gerry Carpenter, and Joe Albright all tied at 39 points each. John did not keep up on the back as Gerry and Joe tied for the lead. The last six holes were also tied so it went down to the last three holes to determine the winner for the day. Joe managed six points to Gerry’s five on the last three holes to win the bragging rights for the day. Gerry had a wipeout on hole 16 to blow himself out of the picture. (Gerry still got in the picture as Joe Albright left the scene early)

Following just back of the leaders with 38 points were stalwarts Dick Caggiano and Jerry Lien. Both shot good games but not enough to win the day.

Fighting for the bottom spot this week was pretty Khantong Kristianson, Trevor Carnahoff, and Jim Tully. As it was, it was a no contest as Jim again garnered the bag with 10 big points. I don’t know what happened but it seems that Jim lost his game somewhere. Jim, start looking for your game or you’ll be locked in the cellar for life!

The 4th International University Competition (IUC) at Rangsit University

James Saville, director of sports, Asian University

Asian University medal winners and participants at this year’s International University Competition.

The fourth IUC was held at Rangsit during July 2004, with seven universities taking part in a variety of sports. This event has brought honour as well as a number of medals and trophies to our university for the first time in four years. Altogether it proved to be a really excellent event, bringing together the university’s new, current and past students, as well as staff, both academic and administrative, all of whose support contributed towards our achievement.

Table Tennis

Amongst some very pleasing results, the honour of first place goes to Sarunporn Sangsiritongchai (Anne), who won the gold medal for the women’s table tennis. Sarunporn, who has won a gold medal in this particular sport many times, should be congratulated for beating Shinnawat University’s top player.

Badminton

Second, with a well-deserved silver medal in the men’s badminton, was Nutt Vatcharasinthu, who defeated Ramkhamhang University. Even with the added difficulty of having his final match stopped and then re-started at a later stage due to some administrative quirk, he was able to play well and take second place. Third, with an equally well-deserved bronze medal against Thammasart University, was Chuttamat In-In, who played every match with a mixture of vigor and humor and with a very pleasing result. Also third, was Soravit Torntaipoonstid, who not only won the bronze medal against Thammasart University, but was also the most valuable player of the competition in very hot and humid conditions on the court. An excellent effort from a very committed player.

Basketball

In the men’s basketball against Mahidol University under the captaincy of the ever elusive and entertaining Adull Kilenthong, AUST won the bronze medal for third place. These matches against some of the best teams in the competition delighted all who watched. It must be said that all the basketball players put in an excellent effort to ensure a very pleasing result.

Football & Volleyball

Both football and volleyball teams put in a sterling effort in tough, hot conditions to ensure that they will take home their share of glory in the future.

Cheerleaders

Last but not least, all players were encouraged by the exuberant, vocal support of the attractive AUST female cheerleading squad, which did much to raise enthusiasm and morale.

The IUC was a very valuable experience for all of our students. For it showed that our students can achieve success through teamwork and mutual support. We trust that all participants will use this valuable experience to further improve their medal tally next year, as well as, more generally, enrich their academic studies during their time at the Asian University.

Sunday Quiz League

Pattaya 9 Ball Pool League

The Square Ring

by Howie Reed

During the Olympics things on the boxing front are pretty much put on the back burner. Especially true in Thailand as Bangkok University’s Udomporn Polsak won the gold medal in the 117lb class in weightlifting. It was the first gold medal for any Thai lady in the Modern Olympics. “All Hail Polsak”.

Meanwhile boxing is supposed to simmer, ready to be delivered for consumption when Olympic interest wanes for another three and a half years. As Frank Sinatra sang, “That’s Life”. That aside a boxing column without results is like a man without a women, a bar with no lady, a ship without a rudder. Actually a bar with no lady is a liquor store.

That’s not to write that nothing happened. Away from the Olympics Kokichi Tanaka(23-8-1) KO over Padejsuek Twingym (0-3) at 1:36 in Japan. Now I don’t know, or care, who either fighter is. In Aussie WBC #2 light heavyweight Paul Briggs (23-1) out pointed previously unbeaten WBC #3 Stipe Drews (26-1). It was a bad night for Drews as he was dropped three times and penalized an additional 3 points. As a ‘mandatory WBC eliminator’ that would mean that Briggs gets a shot at Champ Antonio Tarver. Don’t hold your breath.

The early days of this Olympics have seen vast numbers of empty seats but spirited competition in boxing. From just the first glance it appears that Olympic officials have gotten rid of the ‘old goats’ that were judging. In cleaning house the scoring actually seems accurate. That could be a shot in the arm for the Amateur sport. The best news out of early results was that New Zealand boxer and convicted child-killer Soulan Pownceby was beaten in the first round of the 81 kg class on day one. The 29-year-old was jailed for four years in 1995 for the manslaughter of his five-month-old daughter. Ireland’s sole boxer Andy Lee scored a good points win over Alfredo Lopez in the 75 kg class. Canadian boxer Trevor Stewardson got a win in the 81 kg class after taking the Canadian Olympic Committee to court for his spot on the team. He and two team mates thought they qualified by winning a tournament in Rio de Janeiro. The COC said, “Nay Nay. We dropped the Rio event from our qualifying criteria. No we didn’t tell anyone.” Guess the Brazilian’s check bounced. See a little Thailand lives everywhere.

Well the clod that writes this column missed another Royal Birthday. He is a duly humbled farang who doesn’t know any better. He probably drinks, smokes and does the hoochie-coochie. People like him are ruining the country. Before we close the book on Mr. Yodsanan’s fight with Stevie Forbes though you might like to hear from a local expert. That would be Patrick the Flying Frog who runs the best Belgium Restaurant in the world, “Great fight Yodsanan-Forbes, first 6 rounds were dominated by Yodsanan, 7/8/9 by Forbes, great body shots by both boxers, looked like Yodsanan had still some jet-leg in him, performing slower after round 10 but still coming back with hard shots to the body and head from Forbes. Forbes tried to upgrade his performance in the last round by ‘trying’ to knock out Yodsanan, the only way he could win the fight but impossible to do so. Congratulations go to my good friend Yodsanan, our Thai Mike Tyson, still the WBA feather weight Champion of the World. I hope one thing, that Yodsanan made some money of this fight, which I doubt, guess where the money will go? This is Thailand guys! Maybe he’ll get a new motorbike?” There you have the expert analysis from the Flying Frog who does not qualify for the description of a ‘cheese eating, wine drinking surrender monkey.’ Patrick is one stand up tell it like it is guy. Yes, thank you I will tip one to him.

There are some fights out there in the world that need to be made. The one between WBA 140lb champion Vivian Harris’ (24-1) and maybe the best fighter in the UK Ricky ‘The Hitman’ Hatton (36-0) cries out. Why won’t they “Get it On?” Because of a greedy lower than a whales belly promoter named Frankie Warren. He is a bum. Harris owns the WBA 140lb title. Hatton owns the useless WBU title. Then why don’t they fight? If Warren is the lowest (he is), then at the other end of the scale is Hall of Fame Trainer Emanuel Steward. “Frank Warren’s dictator-like attitude and ‘my way or no way’ attitude was the breaking point. He didn’t want the Harris-Hatton title fight to go to purse bids, now costing Hatton a shot at the world title. Contrary to many media reports, we decided in conjunction with main events that since Hatton is a good boxer we’d even offer him a 50/50 split. That’s unheard of when typically the champ gets 75-80%, but they still turned it down. Warren wanted to do the deal entirely his way, when the pressure was on he pulled Hatton from the ratings. Now, exactly as we predicted Hatton will face yet another fighter in October. It’s a shame because the British fans are some of the best in the world, and they deserve much more. Ricky Hatton had always been one of my favorite fighters to watch, and I suspect Ricky Hatton has the heart of a lion, but Warren is so demanding and stubborn, it’s now cost Ricky a shot at the world title. Harris and Hatton both really wanted this fight. It’s very disappointing.” That’s what’s wrong with boxing.

What could be ‘right’ with boxing would be Tyson conquer Danny Williams (32-3), fighting something that resembles a real challenge. Thanks to the previously written about Frankie Warren that’s a Mission Impossible. Both Williams and Warren may be in for a surprise. Oleg Maskaev (29-5) may have turned his career around after nearly a year away following a 3-5 stretch. Now he’s 7 and nil. The October 9 match may again shake up a sluggish heavy division. Or how about WBO Champ Lamon Brewster (29-2) vs. Kali Meehan (29-1) on the under card of the Spinks-Gonzalez 147 lb bout? Then there’s Wlad Klitschko against DaVarryl Williamson. The latter of the ‘Waterford Chin’. In November there’s two champions (?) in non-title bouts. John Ruiz vs. Andrew Golota and Chris Byrd vs. Jameel McCline. Is it any wonder that even on the mend the star of the division is still Mike Tyson.

Students of the game of boxing and others with no real life may remember that when Tyson started his latest comeback the State of New Jersey (USA) was one of the first to say “Come on In.” The commission licensing Mike so outraged the governor of that state that he would not allow Tyson in any state run facility. He asked the Athletic Control Board to overturn the decision. At the time The Square Ring wrote this guy, governor James A. McGreevey, is a sleezeball, crook and a no goodnik. Of course there are those that would apply the same definition to Mike Tyson. Last week McGreevey a father of two daughters, announced his resignation from the office of Governor. Why? Seems he had an extra material affair with a man. Then to compound matters, he hired his ‘lover or lifetime partner’ to be in charge of the State’s Homeland Security. The Federal Bureau of Investigation said, “No way.” Oh yes, the lover was a citizen of Israel. Next to McGreevey, Mike Tyson would be in the running for the Mother Teresa Award. Even in New Jersey (USA) there is a little of the This Is Thailand. I’ll drink to that.

Pattaya’s legal eagles take time out in ‘Raphee Day’ friendly

Ariyawat Nuamsawat

Pattaya’s public prosecutors, police, public and private lawyers took time out from their busy schedules to participate in a football friendly against the all-star team from R. S. Promotions, “Soccer Head” as part of “Raphee Day” celebrations.

The ‘Justice team’ (black, with white stripe) pitted their wits against ‘Soccer Head’ at the Banglamung pitch in a soccer friendly.

The Pattaya VIP team led by mayor Niran Wattanasartasthorn and Pol. Col. Kamolchai Tienrungroj played an exhibition match against the Ladies’ Justice team.

“Wan Raphee” or Raphee Day commemorates the passing of the father of modern Thai Law, Prince Raphee Phattanasak (a.k.a. Kromluang Ratchaburidirekrit), the 14th son of King Chulalongkorn (Rama 5) who passed away on August 7, 1920 at age 47. He was accredited as the founder of modern Thai Law, which has since developed to the present-day system, which is based on British law. He achieved his Honors degree in just three years at the age of 20 and introduce the system to Thailand, then called Siam.

This year in Pattaya, local legal eagles left the courts for a day of fun festivities, testing their physical mettle on the football pitch at the Banglamung School. Results of each match were left by the wayside as the main objective was to create solidarity and remembrance.

However, despite the fun factor competition was tough, as each team attempted to outwit the other on the field - drawing great interest and cheers from the numerous spectators.

The Market Pattaya Futsal Cup kicks off

Ariyawat Nuamsawat

The inaugural “The Market Pattaya Futsal Cup” kicked of in Pattaya last Saturday afternoon amid an array of young athletes, spectators and local dignitaries. Mayor Niran Wattanasartsathorn started the ball rolling in the event, which will see 64 teams compete against each other in a knockout competition.

The competition began last Saturday afternoon with some fast and furious action on the court.

Futsal, frequently referred to as five-a-side football, is the international term used for the game. It is derived from the Spanish or Portuguese word for soccer, FUTbol or FUTebol, and the French or Spanish word for “indoor”, SALon or SALa.

The game has gained rapid popularity throughout South America, particularly in Brazil. The skills developed in this game are visible in the world-famous style the Brazilians display outdoors on the full-sized field. Pele, Zico, Socrates, Bebeto and other Brazilian superstars developed their skill playing Futsal. While Brazil continues to be the Futsal hub of the world, the game is now played, under the auspices of FIFA, all over the world, from Europe to North and Central America and the Caribbean, South America, Africa, and Asia and Oceania.

However, the Pattaya competition is aimed at promoting the sport to the region’s youth and is sponsored by The Market Pattaya, General Engineering (Plc) and the Chatchiap Co. Ltd.

Games will be held Monday to Friday from 5 p.m. and on Sundays at 1 p.m. until the finals, towards the end of September.

All games will be held at The Market Pattaya’s 23 rai property on Pattaya Second Road, with teams in four age groups - under12s, 15s, 18s and open categories.

Local hotel teams give Olympics run for their money

Ariyawat Nuamsawat

The Dusit Resort Pattaya topped the medals tally to take the title as the most athletic hotel in the region by raking in the majority of track and field events at the 14th Thai Hotel Association-Eastern Chapter (THA-EC) games held last weekend. The event saw over 20 of the region’s hotels partake in a multitude of sporting events.

Men’s and Women’s 100-meter sprint finals saw the Dusit Resort seal their win in the athletics division.

In the height of Olympic fever around the globe, the Eastern seaboard’s hospitality industry opened their annual sporting event at the Pothisamphan School in Naklua last Sunday with an official parade and a speech by Bundarik Kusolavit, THA-EC president, along with local dignitaries in attendance.

This year’s games saw athletes compete in a variety of events, with 20 teams taking to the field for the soccer competition. The highlight of Sunday’s competition was when the Hotel Ladies team disgraced the Pattaya VIP team by thrashing them 5-1, much to the amusement of spectators. Volleyball, Takraw and track and field events - which began on July 5 - were also well attended, each with over 10 teams competing for first place.

The Hotel Ladies team defeated the Pattaya VIP team 5-1 in a friendly exhibition match.

The end results show just which hotel teams were dedicated to their chosen sport as The City Hotel Sriracha took first place in the football competition; The Hard Rock Hotel girls teams rolled into first place in the women’s volleyball, while the The Montien Hotel went head over heels to win the Takraw category and the Siam Bayview Hotel took home honors for the best parade and the Dusit Resort with the athletics trophy.
