Race, Schulz and the Valentine’s Day Massacre in Pattaya
by Peter Cummins
The Fourteenth Pattaya Marriott Resort and Spa Koh Larn
Classic was probably the most exciting to date, with David Race and his
‘Racer’ having an incredible victory, winning the event for the second
successive year - literally, to use an old cliche, “snatching victory from
the jaws of defeat”!
Or, this could be phrased another way: this year’s
Classic was held on Valentine’s Day which also perpetuates another event,
“The Valentine Day Massacre”, when Al Capone and his cronies
assassinated their rivals on the streets of Chicago in the 30s. The way
David Race eliminated the rest of the fleet on the second leg of the sailing
part, it could have been a water-borne “Valentine’s Day Massacre”.
End
of the ‘massacre’: Race and Schulz beach to the winners’ signal.
Race Manager David Wales sent the fleet away off the
Royal Varuna start line, for the annual combined sail-run of the Bangkok
Hash House Harriers and Harriets and Royal Varuna Yacht Club’s finest. It
was a beautiful day, with a light northerly and there was a ferocious
outgoing tide, as the fleets headed north for the rounding of Koh Chun
(Light-house Island), located just off Pattaya Bay.
David Race sailed close in-shore to lessen the effects of
the tide, which he did very successfully - with one little problem. A
massive westerly wind shift left those who had gambled on that move, way out
on a lee shore and kilometers behind the fleet which took the outer course.
Three
‘made a crowd’ for this team.
Meanwhile the fleets sailed in to the Koh Larn drop-off
point for the runners. David, well behind the rest, dropped his runner, the
agile and swift Chris Schulz who proceeded to knock six minutes off the
deficit, by crossing Koh Larn in an incredible 39.40, with Ivo Gonz and
Linda Sharp 46.13 and 47.47, respectively.
As the Koh Larn Classic is really three events: the two
sailing legs which are subject to the craft’s international handicap and
the running section which is the net time, Race/Schulz had already closed
the gap somewhat.
The reach back east across the bay to take David Wales’
finishing signal would probably make the “Guinness Book of Records”.
David, with his superb handling, was topping 25-km an hour- and Chris was
not even out on the wire. They bolted past every thing that was floating, to
take the overall honours in 2.17.08, almost 10 minutes ahead of the
second-placed team of Ben Chandler and Ivo Gonzenbach (2.26.33), with Claire
Medd/Neil B. (2.28.40), Antony Chapman/Rick Mendonsa (2.34.34), Peter
Herning /Linda Sharp (2.34.39), Alex Skaria/Gonthier (2.36.2) and Alberto
Cassio/Tom Ellefesen 2.36.10), third to seventh, respectively.
He is an amazing fellow this David Race. As he did when
winning the Hobie Cat Nationals late last year, he left for major business
contacts in Bangkok before the championship had even finished. This time, he
had to rush for the airport to fly to Budapest for a consultancy, learning
that it was minus 10 C. in that fair city on the Danube. “Never mind,”
he said, “I shall try Buda first and if that is too cold, I shall cross
the river to Pest. That may be warmer!”
Besides the overall trophies, special awards were made to
Chris Schulz: the Karl Schmid memorial trophy for the fastest runner, an
award to Linda Sharp as the fastest lady runner and to Claire Medd as the
first lady helm.
Of course, all the land-sea action was really only the
precursor to the REAL show which was on the Varuna sea-front. A full team
from the sponsor, the Pattaya Marriott Resort and Spa, led by Resident
Manager Thomas Christiansen and the F and B manager Khun Phuwanat ensured
that the usual excellent fare was ready. General Manager Somsak Tanruengsri,
who has been the loyal supporter of the event since its inception in 1981,
was away on business.
John Quarmby, GM of Schenker, Stinnes Logistics, has also
been a perennial supporter of and participant in successive Classics. Paul
Underwood, GM of Technilink and Alberto Cassio’s Photo Bank made sure that
the liquid refreshments flowed abundantly.
Meantime, Gilbert Leemann and his marshalls Chris, Arthur
and others, ensured safety and fairness, while the Royal Thai Navy band
provided great entertainment and good vocals.
As usual, the Hashers did a few ‘turns’ with the
incomparable Noriega rendering his Hong Kong Suzy Wong ‘siren song’-
“Me no likey British sailor; Yankee pay fie dollar more...”.
Since the inaugural event in 1991, the Koh Larn Classic
has joined the league of similar races such as the Four Peaks - a 36-hour
endurance test of sailing 76 nautical miles, 20 miles of overland running
and scaling four peaks, first organized by Hong Kong’s Aberdeen Boat Club,
in 1985.
Another is the Australian Three Peaks Race, a most
grueling test of man and machine around the island state of Tasmania which,
for the slower yachts - and runners - can be a four-day marathon.
It was a most appropriate event for the Pattaya Marriott
Resort and Spa to sponsor for, of all sports and related past-times, it
would be impossible to find any human activity more environmentally-friendly
than running and yacht racing: both rely entirely on human endeavour - the
latter requiring the added assistance of Nature’s forces.
In fact, the Pattaya Marriott some time back, issued an
“Eco code of conduct”, some parts of which could almost have been
extracted from the “Koh Larn Classic.”
For example: “Follow designated trails and paths”.
Apart from a number of the Hashers who were a little lost, this was true.
Don’t disturb animals, plants and natural habitats.”
Or, again: “Take only pictures; leave only footprints. No graffiti. Do not
litter.”
I am sure that the Hashers were most happy to leave
behind only their footprints and to re-join their waiting craft, an escape
from the searing heat of Koh Larn.
New Pattaya sport festival proposed
At the monthly Pattaya Business and Tourism Association (PBTA) meeting
held at the Green Park Resort on February 11, Praphut Kamlangek
representative of the Foot Voolet Co. Ltd. made a proposal to hold a Pattaya
Sports Festival from May 19 to May 30.
Praphut proposed that various sporting activities should
be held to attract thousands of spectators from Thailand and abroad. “The
general feeling in Pattaya now is to try to promote the city as a sports
city and therefore projects such as this in particular would be of great
benefit to Pattaya’s image,” he said.
Students will be encouraged to participate in the beach
football for secondary schools. The program allows for 32 teams to
participate. A special beach football match will be played between the
former English and Thai national teams. Other sports will include Foot
Volley, Footsal, Street Basketball and various water sports. The venue will
be on Jomtien Beach in the Dongtan area.

UK Club goes fishing
The U.K. Club Of Pattaya had a day at sea on Tuesday February 10.
Members and friends were already soaking wet before
the boat arrived as over 20 of them ventured down to the boat in the
driving rain at 9.00 am.
Dennis
Bryce won the prize for largest fish caught and Noy is the winner of most
fish caught.
The trip was a little choppy to say the least, but the
club members did manage to do a little fishing as well as eating and
drinking of course.
The winner of the largest fish went to Dennis Bryce
who caught a one eyed fish (so the scribe was told!) and the winner of
most fish caught was won by Noy.
Eventually the sun did shine and a good day had been had by all when
we arrived back in Pattaya at 6.00 pm.
Pattaya Pool League
The TAGGS AM-AM
March 3 at Eastern Star Resort
(Press Release) The only chance for the majority of the expatriate
community to play a Pro Am format in the Pattaya area is once a year in the
TAGGS Am-Am, which this year is being held at the Eastern Star Resort on
Wednesday, March 3.
In a Pro Am 3 amateur players play with a Professional, but
the Am-Am format is four amateurs with two Stableford points scores from four
counting on each hole.
This year to make the competition even more competitive the
players will only be allowed 75% of their handicaps with a maximum allowance of
one shot per hole. This finally brings the competition into line with the
genuine Pro Am format after eight previous years of events and will ensure a
much closer finish with many more teams in the hunt for the places.
There will also be the usual nearest the pins and longest
drive prizes to be won in three divisions.
Be sure not to miss this once a year opportunity to play in
one of the real fun events on the Pattaya golf calendar.
Entries can be made at The Bunker, The Haven and Lewiinskis
golf venues and cost 1,500 baht per player, which includes green and caddy fee,
a commemorative golf shirt and a sumptuous buffet prior to the prize giving at
The Haven. The teams are limited to 24 so early applications are advised.
Bill Hewitt takes
Bangpra with par
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the Bunker
On Tuesday February 10, the Bunker Boys travelled to the showpiece
course at Bangpra for their weekly medal event and found the course in
good condition and the greens lightning fast.
As the course was also crowded a long day lay ahead of
them and the latter groups were to face the prospect of a six hour round!
With the cut at 16 division two golfers found the going tough and Gavin
Bradley survived a ten shot adjustment in his handicap from the previous
outing to post a score of net 74, joining Kevin Wilson as runner-up. One
shot ahead was George Redgewell who used his canny golf to post a winning
score of net 73.
Division one also saw a tight struggle and Wilf Latham
shed his image of “Bananaman” to record net 75 and take third place,
two shots behind John Hughes whose net 73 was good enough only for second.
Bill Hewitt had the honour of shooting the only par round of the day and
his net 72 took the major prize. Steve Nowell and Harry Cowling shared the
Bunker Super Sawng award for their birdie two’s and poor Enda
Naughton’s 16 shots on hole 13, which included five into the water,
guaranteed him the Bunker Banana Booby.
John King in Control at
Eastern Star
A huge field of forty golfers gathered at the Bunker on
the morning of Thursday February 12 hoping Mr. Loy could transport them
all to Eastern Star for the Bunker’s weekly stableford event. “No
prompem!” for the organiser and all managed to get to the course in time
for the start.
They found the course in excellent condition once again
and the field was cut at sixteen and under which meant some top flight
regulars found themselves “slumming it” with the division two golfers.
They made their mark instantly and Harry Cowling posted a level par 36
points to take third place, whilst Bob Lindborg’s 37 points took second
place. Enda Naughton overcame the shame of his sixteen shots on one hole
at Bangpra two days before to fire 38 points and take the divisional
title. Division one saw four players tightly contesting the day and
Takeshi Hakozaki and Denis Dixon both produced rounds of 37 points to
share the minor placing. One ahead was Mike Allidi and his 38 points fell
just one short of John King, for whom the course is his second home, his
38 points winning the prize.
Arthur Hancock, Keith Smithson, Steve Nowell, Bob
Lindborg and Mike Allidi all fired birdie two’s and Mike’s brace of
birdies gave him the major share of the Bunker Super Sawng award.
Elsewhere on the course Paul Quodomine and Saranya Chaiyanont were trying
to hide from the searching eyes of Mr. Loy but they focused on Ya’s
dismal card of 21 points and the Bunker bananas found a suitable recipient
once again.

Eastern Star
Stableford 1st Division
1st: Arthur Hancock, 38
2nd: Tony Barritt, 36
3rd: Phil Mitchell, 34 cb9 17
4th: Graham Johnson, 34 cb9 16
2nd Division
1st: Roar Berger, 44
2nd: Gordon Langtry, 37
3rd: Michael Moore, 34
4th: Brian Kelly, 32 cb9 17
5th: Peter Emslie, 32 cb9 16
Arthur Hancock, taking advantage of his local knowledge, took
the first division by two strokes from Tony Barritt, who cannot seem to string a
few rounds together no matter how many times a day that he goes to the local
driving range. Flipper Mitchell, making a very welcome return to The Haven, kept
his playing partner Graham Johnson at bay by a shot on the back nine to secure
third spot.
Roar Berger played the game of his life to shoot eighteen
shots better than his average round and sweep the second division away by seven
points. Gordon Langtry took his first prize the day before returning to Canada
for a much-needed rest from the strains of his nightly activities with his
secret (?) amour. The usual suspects filled out the rest of the prizewinners.
Chris Davisson, Takeshi Hakozaki, Rich Wibrow and Mike Morris
all managed to get a two but unfortunately for them Graham Johnson achieved his
17th Hole In One to match the number of 147s he has made on the professional
circuit in world snooker. Sadly none of the hole in ones or the 147 breaks were
televised. But at least he swept the pool for the twos and graciously stood all
the days competitors a drink after the prize giving.
Before presenting the prizes Richard Livingston, the resident
PGA professional, welcomed new members Mike Herridge, Harry Lorentsen and Ray
Beardsley and also welcomed back Graham Johnson, Phil Mitchell, Stefan Hoge,
Philip Cass and Jens Gunnarsson.

Stableford
1st: Rick Bevington, 40
2nd: Michael Dige, 38
3rd: Harald Gruber, 37
4th: Matt Millar, 35 cb9 22
5th: Takeshi Hakozaki, 35 cb9 17
Even Chonburi has become a venue for the almost inevitable
coach parties but luckily they started at 6:30 am and were therefore well out of
sight although not earshot, by the time the players started their rounds. One
was left to wonder what the coach trip back was like with fifty plus unshowered
golfers crammed together for the hour journey.
Rick Bevington took his first trophy for a while, with a
steady round, which featured more than 19 lip outs according to the winning
narrator back at The Haven. Michael Dige again put in a solid round of gross 74
to take second place and consolidate his 4 handicap. Harald Gruber also took his
first prize with Matt Millar, returning to golf after a long period of
rehabilitation following his huge accident, in fourth ahead of Takeshi Hakozaki
on countback by five shots on the back nine.
The twos were shared between Matt Millar, John Desmond and
Jens Gunnarsson.
Back at The Haven Richard welcomed new members Risto Manerus
and Tarja Kankainen and welcomed back Matt Millar, Paul Quodomine and Per
Aschan.

4th: Paul Simpson, 74 cb9 35.5
5th: Bob Lindborg, 74 cb9 39
6th: Mikael Andersson, 74 cb9 40
Century Ban Chang although one of the shortest courses in the
area can prove to be also one of the most difficult and with the wind blowing
from strong to nearly gale force, the days event was a real battle and a test of
staying the course.
Takeshi Hakozaki used all his experience of playing his home
course which is situated half way up mount Fuji, where the wind howls and the
snow blows, to just edge out Doug Campbell who learnt his golf on the dark and
wild moors of Yorkshire, by a single shot.
Brian Kelly, who also has vast experience of wild conditions
at his home club in Alderney in the Channel Islands, beat off the chasing group
by count back.
Not surprisingly with the course playing so difficult there
were no twos on the day and the pot was carried forward to the next competition.

You can’t fault Mike Seery’s net 67 effort, but it
wasn’t as favorably distributed as Ken Kutzing and the latter was left
totting home the Monthly Medal, thanks to count back.
As many readers and players know both Mike and Kenny go
on to qualify for the Gold Medal comp slated for January 2005. The
triumvirate of Jack Grindvold, Jim Munns and Andy Leach were but a shot back
in A Flight and sorted themselves to fill out the victory podium. Oddvar
Rykke and Colin Davis matched their handicaps with the former counting back
to the silver. Tor Elgvin playing off a reduced handicap of 28, the
Lewiinski’s Golf Society maximum, was able to upstage Monthly Medal legend
Bob Lindborg on count back.

If it wasn’t the week of the Monthly Medal surely the
two stars of this day would have had a shot at the title slot of this
article, Mike Allidi and his par round off the stick and Roger Koehler with
his net 64. Paul Countoumas gave an inkling that it would be good things to
come this week as he prevailed for second place on count back over Golf
Manager John Emmerson.
Chris Sanders led B Flight with a two under handicap 72
as the day saw three flights, given the huge number of golfers in town.
Claus Birk Thomsen came second in B in his initial outing with the Society,
with currently steady Jim Munns a trio behind. As mentioned above Roger
Koehler his net 64 off his 25 handicap shattered not only C Flight but also
the entire field. Our Monthly Medal winner for February was low as well at
66. Lars-Erik edged Kevin Bowman on count back to land the final pay slot on
the day.

Paul Coutoumas who came second on Monday stepped to the
top step of A Flight and the day with a sparkling 65 off his stingy 9
handicap, which is now 6. Veteran winners Klaus Schackt and Steve Mascari
filled out A.
Phil Utting matched par and Simon Howarth, but prevailed on count back
for the winning B Flight score. Newly returned to town Doug Maiko rounded
out B Flight. Huge turnouts worked for Kenny Kutzing as he nabbed his second
victory of the week, to go with a second, despite overshooting his handicap
by one. Don Connelly edged the “chef to the stars”, Mick O’Connor, by
a couple for the second spot in C Flight.
Ovegren, O’Meara & Barbie win Diana January Seniors
A large field of 52 players teed-off in
the monthly Diana Seniors & Ladies Open on Thursday January 29 at a
rather busy Pattaya Country Club.
Pid Ovegren was top in the Ladies division, with Sue
Spence runner-up.
Mick O’Meara returned the best score of the day with
forty Stableford points to win the Seniors division, and Klaus Schiffer was
runner-up with thirty-eight points.
Dickie Barbie’s thirty-eight points was enough to
claim the Super Seniors prize with Wally Anderson runner-up and just one
point behind.
Near Pins were claimed by Nils Lago, Mick O’Meara, Bob
Lindborg and Mal Spence.
Les Winch’s putter was certainly hot as he sank the
longest first putts on holes nine and eighteen.
The weather was good and the course showing signs of
needing rain.
Thursday February 26 is the date of the February Senior
& Ladies Open at Pattaya Country Club, so sign-up for that at the Green
Bottle or the Diana Driving Range, North Pattaya.
3 Sisters Golf
This past Monday brought out a good field of competitors
to vie for the bragging rights. The winner was a surprise since he has not
played for a while and had just got back from work.
Bill
Thompson (right) earned the bragging rights while Bill Key (left) was
holding the bag.
Bill Thompson always has a decent game along with a
pretty good handicap. On Monday he shot 37 points to win on a countback from
Tim Holt who has been dominating play for the past few months. Bill came in
with a strong back nine shooting 21 points as Tim trotted along to garner 18
on his back nine. Tim played steadier golf but Bill trounced everyone on the
back nine to win the day.
It was a strange day as 8 golfers came in with 34 points
and another large group at 33. It seems that half of the field had a chance
to make a move on the leaders but failed either on the front or back nine.
I’m sure that next week will be a bit different.
Holding the bag this week was good Ole Bill Key. Bill has been in trouble
with his short game and putting. His drives are adequate but it seems that
Bill has not got the touch around the greens yet. With a bit of practice and
perseverance, Bill should easily get his game together and start shooting
better gold. Bill edged out Rollie Weese who had tied him with 18 points.
Rollie came on strong on the back to beat out Bill and to keep out of the
cellar this week. Next week should be interesting to see who drops back into
the cellar position.

9th Classroom is a Classic for Golf and Charity
Pete Stonebridge made the first tournament he hosted at the
Classroom a real boon for golfers and local charity.
It was clear from the start that the tournament would be a
first class operation as Pete purchased the well-prepared Green Valley Rayong
Golf Course from 11:00 a.m. on, thereby ensuring participants that they would
not have their play interrupted by marauding groups of golfers that are the bane
of locals and visitors this time of year.
Pete also wanted the golfers to have an enjoyable well-paced
round and this was achieved by restricting the shotgun start to 144 players, a
number that was quickly met. Pete regretted turning anyone down but to do
otherwise would have turned a great day into drudgery for all concerned.
If everyone had a great day, it is difficult to choose an
appropriate superlative to describe the day overall winner John Dearden had as
he swept the field away with 46 points. Although John suffered the catcalls that
all winners who have an extraordinary day suffer, it was noted by those aware
that John’s handicap was well seasoned. He also carried his three teammates
Glenn Ford (36 points), Dene Airey (36 points) and Wally Anderson in the team
event. Their 118 total was 8 clear of second place! Kudos, and the attendant
beautiful trophies, also went to Hans Collett (41 points), the winner of A
Flight, Tarja Kankainen (36 points), the Ladies Champ and Andy James the Rabbit
Division Winner. Andy, the proprietor of neighboring Misty’s A-Go-Go,
graciously sponsored the Men’s Near Pins on the day, the Closest to the Keg
competition (won by Jeff North) and added an additional 20,000 baht to the
day’s contribution to charity. That hospitality caused all to overlook the
fact that Andy was the only competitor in the Rabbit Division!
Eddie Blackwell (39 points) and Ken Kutzing (41 points) took
second place trophies in A and B, respectively, with Peter D. Wilson (38 points)
and Ian Spence (40 points) doing likewise for third. As always there are hard
luck stories on the day and they were shared by Chaba Carney who lost a back 9
count back for the Ladies Title and Simon Howarth who fell out of the trophies
as he lost a final 6-hole count back to Peter D. for the last spot in A Flight.
The entire complement of golfers retired to the Classroom and
a presentation that came off on time, as promised and scheduled. They were
treated to a Thai-Euro buffet and numerous prizes and Lucky Draw gifts.
The culmination of the day, and the premise upon which this
tournament was held, occurred when Peter Stonebridge invited Jester president
and TQ co-owner, Woody Underwood, to the stage to present the Jester’s
Care-4-Kids Fund with a check for 100,000 baht. With that punch line, it is no
wonder that all are looking forward to next year’s 10th Classroom Charity Golf
Classic.
Pete would like to acknowledge the contributions to the Lucky
Draws by Woody in the name of the TQ, by Kim Fletcher in the name of
Shenanigan’s, Pattaya City Golf, Steve Mascari in the name of Lewiinski’s
and Stevie Marks in the name of Top Class Entertainment, and, of course, Andy
James at Misty’s. Also to be acknowledged are the people who helped make the
event possible, notably John Foley, Scott Foley, Willie McCallum, Bob Patterson,
Khun Tippawon, and her staff at Green Valley and Steve Donovan, and lets not
forget the beautiful Classroom girls who spent a long day on the course
providing each foursome with a commemorative group photo.

Khao Kheow
Stroke
Certain courses start the nerves tingling way before
tee off time and one of these is Kheo Kheow. Always a favourite with the
players it provides a tough test, but fair. You hit a bad shot you are
punished, hit a good one and unless you finish in a divot, you get a good
result.
Jeff
Wylie
On this day the course was in pretty good condition
with the greens on the A Course fair but on the slow side and the greens
on the B Course slick and fast. Maybe why the scores were on the low side
with only one person beating their handicap.
In the A Flight, 0 to 16, the winner was Ted Morris
with 35 points, second was Tore Eliasson with 34 points, third was Jerry
Kurtz with 33 points and fourth was Kevin Dunne with 32 points.
Pete
Galle
In the B Flight the winner, with the only round to
beat net par, was Doug Maiko with 38 points. In second was Bob Benda with
35 points, third was Cilia Bosman with 34 points and fourth was Tim Holt
with 33 points.

3rd Thailand Temple Run
With the generous support of Tourism Authority Thailand,
Sports Vision, Go Thailand Tours and Amari Watergate, we will organize the
Third International Thailand Temple Run on 21 March 2004 in Samut Songkram
province with the start and finish line at Phumrinkudeethong Temple - the
beautiful ancient temple of the province.
This
annual event was created in 2001 focusing on the increasing demand of
overseas runners to participate in international marathons at exotic and
unique locations. Running is becoming a life style for an increasing number
of local and overseas people combining health awareness and the “cool”
image of being a “Marathoner”.
Amphoe Amphawa in Samut Songkram offers the ideal
location for the event. It provides an unforgettable race course, a real
part of “Unseen Thailand”, which leads along small roads through fruit
orchards, coconut plantations, and small villages and passes more than 20
temples on the way. With monks collecting food offerings, Thai traditional
music & dance performances, cheering school children along the course;
it highlights Thai culture and hospitality at its best.
Overseas and Thai Runners alike were praising the
uniqueness and beauty of the area at the first 2 editions of the race. For
the third time in a row Mr. Hajime Nishi will compete in this year’s race.
He is the holder of the world record “The Fastest Time To Run A Marathon
On Each Of The 7 Continents” by Guinness Publishing Ltd., UK as he
completed 42.195 Km marathons on 7 continents in 168 days. Mr. Nishi
competed in more than 300 different marathons worldwide and he says: “The
Thailand Temple Run is the most attractive international race in
Thailand!”
The Thailand Temple Run sees itself becoming an Eco
Marathon by focusing on two main points:
1. “Losing is winning” - At the Temple Run the finish
times and places are not the most important features. The main focus shall
be enjoying the beauty of the surroundings, the hospitality of the local
community and the cultural exchange with people from many nations. The
longer you take to finish the course - the more time you will have to
experience the highlights the event offers.
2. “Appreciation and respect for the environment” -
Let’s leave the race course as we found it. We all are the guests of the
local community. If we see some garbage on the road, let’s collect it and
bring it to the finish line for disposal. To encourage this behavior, the
event will award the runner who brings back the most litter from the race
course.
Besides the trophies and money prizes for winners, over
100 attractive lucky draw prizes such as domestic flights, hotel
accommodations, lunch and dinner vouchers, and running gear await the race
finishers. The organizers hope to attract more and more Thai people, both
youngsters and adults, to participate in healthy activities.

Pattaya Dollhouse puts first points on the board in Bangkok softball league
Dirk Brijs, captain of the
Pattaya Dollhouse team
Finally we got the momentum on our side. After big
defeats last Sunday against RBSC in very hard weather conditions and a
forfeited defeat on Wednesday against Bourbon due to lack of players.
Young
Hadjidulah, our star lead-off hitter.
This time it was that same Bourbon Street waiting for
us. Bourbon was second in the league before the game started with a 6-2
record. At last also we could field a team with first picks. We could
field one of our strongest teams so far. Still though our star 1B missing
and our regular SS but we had a decent side this time. The first game
started off nervously with almost perfect defense of both teams with
Bourbon starting off better with 1 run scored in the first and second
inning while the Dollhouse bats stayed silent.
This score remained till the top of the 5th when
Bourbon put another point on the board. Time for Dollhouse to put their
heads out now and start reacting. This we did as we leveled the scores on
the bottom of the 5th with 3 runs scored. Bourbon came right back though
with 2 runs scored top of 6 and 1 run scored top of 7. So now bottom of 7
up. No way to go for Dollhouse but forward. 2 outs and no runs scored yet
so game in the pocket, so thought Bourbon. There appeared the rally monkey
and off we went, we scored 4 runs to win the game. What a game waaaaw!
Second game we kept driving on our momentum and scored
3 runs in the second and 2 runs in the 3rd inning. After 3 the score was
5-3 in our favor. This score stayed till the top of the 6th inning. Top of
6 we scored a run but Bourbon came up big in the bottom of the same inning
scoring 3 to level the game. It seemed same scenario as in the first game
but this time Bourbon seemed to be pulling on the longer end of the rope.
Top of 7th Dollhouse again with their backs against the wall came out big
scoring 2 runs and put the ball back in Bourbon camp. With some excellent
defense we shut them down in a 1 2 3 inning and our second winning game
was in the books.
Personal notes go out to the whole team for playing
excellent defense and as for offense we had exceptional performances by
Donnie Brown going 5 for 7 with 1 run scored and 1 RBI, also big was Young
Hadjidulah who is rapidly becoming our star lead-off hitter going 3 for 7
with 2 doubles 1 triple and no less then 5 RBI.

Friday February 13
Eastern Star
Stableford
A fine day out is always promised when the 60’s Bar
takes a trip out to Eastern Star, particularly now that so much work has
been carried out on the greens and fairways. That doesn’t mean the
course is any easier, particularly when the wind blows as it did on this
day, but it makes you feel better when walking around.
Bobby
with the technical winners.
With good greens and a grassy fairways, super weather
what more can one ask for? Well 6 balls are not what I would ask for but
if I ran a golf course, Why Not?
So the day was slow and the scores not outstanding,
but I must say that on finishing and fancying a cold one before a shower,
the draught Carlsberg was the best any of us had tasted, as were the
pancakes and maple syrup in the fine restaurant.
Bobby
with the winners.
Back at The 60’s Bar Bobby decided he would declare
the results and do the presentations, and a fine job he did.

Peacock Place Indoor Bowling and Snooker Leagues
Peacock Sue retained her ladies singles
title as the opposition faltered on the last catch up games. Sue beat
Banjob 12 - 2 and Mam defeated Lek 14 - 2, then Lek came back to beat
Banjob 13 - 3 but it was too late and later Sue beat Banjob 9 - 4 to
secure the title and go three points clear. In the mixed doubles
Yellowbirds got the better of Spotty Dog 11 - 4 and Thaied 10 - 5 to go
top of the table. Then Double Trouble overcame Thaied with a very good 20
- 2 victory to make it very tight at the top, but with Double Trouble and
Peacock having games in hand.
George continues to be on top of the snooker league.

Blitz strike back,
Scans extend lead
MBMG International Casuals League - Week 11
With the Dubliner Mercenaries taking a week off to
contemplate the upcoming 2002/03 final, it gave the Scans a chance to put
a little distance between them and Robbo’s tight knit force of ‘pay
per play’ stars, and they didn’t miss out on the opportunity. Anders
scoring yet again to push him well up the high scorers chart and though
the French put on a good display, there was no stopping the pillaging
Vikings.
However, that’s all fluff for the real story of the
week. With the weekend’s weather making the pitches soft and muddy to
the touch, it would have been thought, that the boys from SCI would turn
out in droves to have a splash around and try out those sliding tackles.
And yet, within 15 minutes of kick off, it was Blitz that had been
practicing their diving belly slides into the crowd to celebrate, not one,
but three goals! Obviously unused to the attention of the cameras and
paparazzi the SCI team crumbled and were washed away in the rain, final
score 4-0. SCI Manager John McGuigan said after the game “This team
lacks commitment, we came in banking on three points and went away with a
good slapping!” Blitz Manager was busy drowning himself in champagne and
was not available for comment.
Meanwhile visiting RC Pattaya put another dent in
Bangkok United’s championship hopes, beating the pretenders to the
throne 2-1 on the road and ensuring a mid table position as the mid season
games approach.
Sunday games turned out to be a tad more interesting than expected when
none of the referees turned up! Rain stopped play was not the call of the
day, but obviously the refs were taking no chances with their new kit.
Luckily enough volunteers were found who had a rough idea of how the rules
of football worked and the games went ahead. The Germans probably wished
they hadn’t as they landed on the wrong side of a 5-1 score line,
leaving them still winless for the season, their only good news being that
Patana also ended up on the wrong end of a 4-1 score line meaning they are
still only one point clear of the German All Stars at the foot of the
table.
Results Week 11:
Scandinavian Vikings 2 - 1 Les Gaulois de Bangkok
SCI Gecko FC 0 - 4 Bangkok Blitz
Bangkok United 1 - 2 Racing Club Pattaya
Bulls Head Brazilians 4 - 1 Patana
German All Stars 1 - 5 AFC Shrewsbury
PH3 Run 1040
Sign-ups have once again commenced at the Scandi Bar
from 14:30 to 15:25. This has reduced the long sign-up line at the A-Site.
Remember, sign-up times will start at 15:00 starting March 1st.
Today’s A-Site area is a familiar one for anyone who
has been hashing with the PH3 for any amount of time. New A-Sites are
getting hard to find these days! Some recycled A-Sites can still
accommodate many good runs. Hares must be innovative in hare trail design.
Saying all that I’d like to start with today’s hares: Singapore S.
(alias Alan Thorne) and John S.head II (alias Joe Haagen).
After some opening announcements by our GM, Charlie
Manson and King Yao-Yao, new shoes were traditionally “blessed”, the
hares explained today’s run! Back-check was the newfangled word of the
day! But, call it back-check and/or false trail - same same! Numerous
false trails/back-checks kept all of the pack together until the end.
FRB’s became tail-end Charlies quickly on many occasions. Most of the
pack came in within 5 - 7 minutes of the front runners. Good job hares!
About 10 runners/walkers came in about 30 - 40 minutes
later! These individuals were led by none other than GKW! GKW convinced
these people to follow him back to the “other tower”, although he was
only about 200 meters from the correct tower and A-Site at the time. This
group picked up Uncle Fester who was just ya-ya-ya-ing along!
Our hash flash was leading the pack many times so that
he could get his weekly photos. Thanks for your efforts OJ! YD was trying
to get to the front to get his picture taken and took a “dandy” of a
dive!
The GM called the circle after all of Lek’s
sandwiches had been completely consumed by the hungry hashers.
Today’s raffle was a large one with 10 items up for
grabs. And believe it or not, 5 men and 5 ladies each took home a prize.
Rocky and F. Dog were iced for not calling ON-ON while following the pack.
Evil Knievel iced for using the raffle box for a trash can.
Hares iced and a good run was declared over Sir
Air-head’s objections to back-checks! A virgin male named Sid was iced
for losing his shoes. Sid really enjoys Chang on ice as he continued to
drink ever cupful as soon as he received it. Hope you enjoyed the Chang
and the ice Sid!
The bad RA, Sir Airhead, iced the hares for using
back-checks on the run. Spag Head joined them on the ice for stating that
“they held the pack together to the end”. The GM was iced and had
“no comment” about the use of back-checks at this time! A-holeo, T-4,
and U-T-B were iced for taking cheap honeymoons!
Returners on in. Yankee Doodle on in for his crash
during the run. He stated that he “was just praying to Mecca” and
really didn’t fall down. Dr. D* on ice with his wife Eva Braun. It seems
Dr. D* gave his wife some strong medicine for her cold. She proceeded to
drive her motorbike through the Lek Hotel bakery window. Damage to the
motorbike - about 200 baht! Damage to the bakery shop and window - about
7,000 baht!
Sir Airhead iced and GM declared “that back-checks
were allowed during his tenure as GM”. Leavers, virgins and their
sponsors on in. Belgium iced for Evil Knievel’s bright blue shoes. Evil
Knievel circled the ice on his motorbike before departing the A-site area.
T-4 on ice for filling his freezer full of cheap “flu infected
chickens” and eating free chicken at KFC, in Phuket. Sounds “fowl to
me”!
Hare song about the new GM enlightened the hashers who
stayed to listen to it rather than race for their cars for an early exit.
Hash hymn sung by the remaining “hard core hashers” and the bus
departed for town.
