Greg's Kitchen for a "light" lunch

Greg's Kitchen is getting close to 'landmark' status on Pattaya Second Road, almost opposite Soi 6. We well remember Greg's for the huge, trencherman portions of food we have had in the past, so when we heard that Greg was offering a "Light Lunch" we decided we should see what that really meant.

Greg has now divided the restaurant into two main sections. The outside courtyard is called the 'Smoker's Section', while the inside is now all air-conditioned, with overhead fans to keep the air circulating. The black and yellow colour scheme gives a cheery air to the place, and the yellow tablecloths add to that. Condiments on the table include Sriracha chilli sauce as well as tomato sauce, salt and pepper and Maggi seasoning.

Another factor that gives the place a cheery ambience is the service staff. Outfitted in white shirts with black ties and black pants, they are a very cheerful and happy group of young ladies. There are many other establishments in town that should send their girls to Greg's for a few lessons.

As soon as we had sat down, one of the smiling young ladies brought us two cold towels, a gesture very much appreciated on the hot day. We came specifically for the light lunch, which has its own dedicated menu. Light lunch runs from noon till 5 p.m. so you don't have to rush. There are 17 items on this menu including steak and mushroom pie, chicken and ham pie, cod and chips with peas, roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, roast chicken with stuffing and roast beef salad. It doesn't end there! There is a pork fillet with mustard sauce, a few more British favourites like liver and bacon and sausage and mash with beans, a couple of schnitzels - but you get the idea. The light lunch has a weighty menu. All items are priced the same - 159 baht and come with potatoes of your choice and two vegetables, so the price is not heavy.

The standard (and very comprehensive) a la carte menu is also available for those who wish to make a real porker of themselves at lunchtime. Local beers are around B. 75 and wine can be had for B. 130 per glass, or B. 750 per bottle. An enormous breakfast with everything on it, other than the kitchen sink, is still only B. 140, while there are many choices from the different sections of this menu. British favourites range in price from B. 195-295, and the International Corner has items all around B. 250. For those with Thai partners, there are a couple of pages dedicated to Thai food items, which are generally priced at around B. 135. However, as stated at the outset, we had come to try the light lunch.

I had chosen the pork fillet with mustard sauce and it filled the art-deco plate, coming with home fries, carrot and peas. Madame went for the roast chicken with stuffing, which came with mashed potatoes, and again was a plate filler. I am not too proud to say that I ate every part of my 'light lunch' and enjoyed it immensely, but was too full for the dessert that another brightly smiling waitress tried to interest me in. Madame however, could not resist the thought of the bread and butter pudding with custard, and made a pig of herself (again), finishing with a wide smile, while saying, "Delicious!"

The Dining Out Team was delighted with the light lunch, and as we made our way back to the office, we wondered what Greg's Kitchen would do for a 'heavy' lunch. At 159 baht the light lunch is very competitively priced, and when looked at from the point of view of quality and quantity, it represents great food at bargain basement prices. Would we go again for lunch? Guaranteed! Very highly recommended - and they're still awfully large portions!

Greg's Kitchen, 370/21-22 Pattaya Second Road (opposite Soi 6), telephone 038 361 227. By the way, if you are looking for parking, we turned right at the Bangkok Bank, just past Greg's Kitchen, and found ample parking up there.

Much anticipated El' Coyote grand opening this weekend

The grand opening of the El' Coyote Yacht Club and Mariner's Rest serviced apartments complex this Saturday the 26th July is the culmination of a vision & the continuance of a passion. That being, a passion for excellence.

The team behind this unique new entry into the Jomtien restaurant and nighttime arena are the guys behind that quiet achiever in town known to all the big boys (the many multi-national corporations around the Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estates) as PMCI. Some 18 months ago they started a project to take advantage of some of the empty shop-houses in the 'then' almost ghost-town-like Jomtien Plaza Complex, which is that big monster of a complex on the corner to your right hand side as you come down the hill from Pattaya just past the Thepprasit Road intersection.

Rona Joy Besa Commercial Manager of PMCI (2nd right) snuggles up to Philip MacDonald (3rd right) joined by many friends during the ‘not so dry runs’ at the El Coyote, leading up to the Grand Opening on Saturday the 26th of July.

Their idea was to consolidate about 8 shop-houses and create 26 serviced apartments out of them. The rationale being, that with PMCI's huge client base, and the fact that they're the largest Asian-based manpower supplier in South East Asia, there should be an almost guaranteed steady stream of people needing high quality accommodation for a reasonable price at their disposal.

But what to do with the ground floor of this project? The answer seemed obvious. As President Joshua & management of PMCI are yachting enthusiasts, a high quality yacht club was the only consideration. Somewhere where you could take your family. Somewhere a little bit quiet, but with a charm and ambience too rarely found in these parts.

The name? Borrowed directly from their impressive 55-foot custom-built yacht berthed at Ocean Marina that the team take clients and friends sailing along the Pattaya and Jomtien shorelines with during their leisure time.

The club also hosts a bar and a restaurant, where the theme is distinctively casual but the decor is elegant and unique. A friend of Joshua's by the name of Renee, also just happens to be a bar designer and construction professional from Holland with an impressive list of successful projects for the likes of Carlsberg and Heineken in Europe. His input and ideas blended perfectly with those of President Joshua's who has just as an impressive list of construction projects behind him, albeit in the power oil and gas industries here over the past 17 years.

The restaurant offers mainly a decent sized Mexican menu with dishes like nachos, burritos, enchiladas and some of the tastiest tacos you'll find in town. The team at El' Coyote have taken their task seriously, and as of opening night, the staff will have been in soft-opening training for some 56 days under the start-up direction of Miss Clarisse Brundo (formerly of Cafe New Orleans).

However, perhaps one of the more noteworthy topics, as Pattaya Mayor Pairat Suthithamrongsawat officially opens the El Coyote & Mariner's Rest on Saturday night, is the inclusion by management of their 'pet project' for the Jesters, the Pledge for Kids charity fund raising program. Joshua and the PMCI management team have been responsible for starting, running and building the program which supports the Jesters in a new facet to the Care for Kids charity drive, and have been able to turn it into something significant in its very first year. It is indeed moving to see a group of individuals putting the interests of others so high up in their list of priorities. That is those of disadvantaged and underprivileged kids in our own community.

El' Coyote Yacht Club and the Mariner's Rest Serviced Apartments open their impressive establishments on Saturday Night with what is sure to be a significant crowd of well wishers and VIPs. The doors open at 18:30 hours and the live band Twin Sound will play in the Garden Courtyard. There is ample parking inside the complex and the regular baht bus route just outside the back door. Those interested in joining the party can find a map and details on the insert in this week's Pattaya Mail.
