Skål Club uncovers a Paradise in Pattaya

Miss Terry Diner

Skål International, the club for tourism professionals, has an active branch in Pattaya and East Thailand. It is involved, amongst other projects, in the proposing of Pattaya for the international eco-tourism awards, the results of which will be made available later this year.

The Pattaya Environmental Rehabilitation Project has been put forward by the local Skål Club for the world eco-tourism award, with backing from the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Pattaya City administration, Pattaya Business and Tourism association and the Eastern Chapter of the Thai Hotels Association.

Vice president of the local Skål group, Peter Malhotra, distributed a colour brochure showing the work that has been done in Pattaya for eco-tourism and spoke on a video that was shot to show how the Pattaya environment has changed, with the local people now proud of their achievements in this regard.

During the very pleasant lunch, which was held at Hans Banziger’s Paradise Restaurant on 2nd Road, the members were also reminded that Pattaya has won the right to hold the Skål World Congress in 2006 against all-comers, and we expect two thousand of the world’s top tourism people to descend on Pattaya, taking away memories of their time here. The local Skål Club will be making sure those memories are favourable.

It behoves us all to be aware of the great strides and promotions being done, on all our behalfs, by Skål Pattaya and East Thailand for Pattaya itself.

Pattaya Sports Club summer party goes ahead despite rain and moonshine

The Pattaya Sports Club hosted another bustling summer party at the Town in Town Hotel on July 12. Social chairman Ken Crow with the able help of the Montgomery family again outdid himself in organizing yet another outstanding event.

Jim and La Montgomery were seen guarding the entrance along with Lorne Hare, Ken Crow and the ominous Bjarne Nielsen. Over 400 people turned out to enjoy the food and drink put on for members and guests.

The bar staff of the Town in Town Hotel was kept busy providing the service needed for thirsty patrons. A magnificent buffet spread was laid out for the masses with quite a few going back for seconds and thirds.

Early into the evening as the moon shone brightly through the clouds the heavens opened, ever so slightly, and as they did one of the visitors was seen enjoying an after-dinner dip in the swimming pool, apparently oblivious to onlookers.

Gazing through the masses of people, Derek Brook was spotted actually wearing a tie, highly suspicious of camouflaging any food that missed his mouth. Carl Engel and Booby Joe were seen at their usual hiding spot near the front of the ballroom. That old ‘toothless devil’, Glenn ‘Jeep’ Holthaus was enjoying the festivities boasting about how he was ‘was gonna whoop’ everyone in lawn bowls, a recent addition to the Sports Club branch and headed up by ‘Jeep’.

Richard Livingston and Frank Polizotto were mingling well by sitting at the same table as many of Pattaya’s golfing ladies.

Despite all the early fun, the excitement of the evening was yet to come. This was of course, the raffle draw. The lovely raffle sellers were doing an extremely good job prying PSC members away from their cash in the hopes of winning the grand prize, one baht weight of gold - a prize highly sought after by the ladies.

After dinner President Carl Engel gave a brief speech and presented lifetime membership cards 8 & 9 to La Montgomery and Rona Herbert, respectively. An emotional Ron thanked everyone for the honor of becoming a life member, pledging his continuing support of the club.

Not long after the speeches, the long awaited raffle was announced. The lovely and blossoming Jackie Montgomery called out the numbers in English and Thai, a great change to Ken’s rustic voice. Sorry about that Ken.

The draw began with the usual rice cookers and toasters and slowly built up to the gold. This year, there were 6 half baht-weight gold chains on offer and a one baht-weight as the finale. The first 6 half baht-weight chains were handed out in quick succession with an unknown gentleman from the back of the room winning the grand baht gold chain before receding in anonymity.

La Montgomery and Ron Herbert received a lifetime PSC membership for their outstanding services and support.

Once over, a special announcement was made that Bill Thompson’s daughter would sing for the masses. Karen Thompson, at the tender age of 13, sang sweetly and is destined to be a name in the music industry here in Thailand.

The band once again took to the stage, entertaining the lively crowd who danced the evening away, some of whom were lubricated well enough to make it to the dance floor.

All in all a great night was had by all.
