The campaign was initiated last year to help poor
children who have to travel long distances to school by providing them with

of Pattaya, Nit Duangdee, and Rotarian Raweewan Suwanwej, for their great

Pattaya Scrabble Club prepares spelling bee for Thai students
Promotion of Thai language skills honors HRH Princess Sirindhorn as part of her 4th cycle birthday
Songklod Kaewvisit
Mayor Pairat Suthithamrongsawat officially opened a
Scrabble tournament for secondary school students in Chonburi on June 6 at
the Royal Garden Plaza to aid in the prevention of drug abuse. The date set
for the inaugural event marked the 4th cycle birthday of HRH Princess
Sirindhorn.

Mayor
Pairat Suthithamrongsawat presided over the opening of Pattaya’s first
Scrabble tournament.
The competition was set up to improve language skills of
youths in the province and to promote the Thai language in the spoken and
written form.
Representatives from the Rotary Club of Pattaya,
newspapers, Chonburi administration, Provincial Education Department,
Pattaya City and the Tourist Authority of Thailand Central Region 3 Office
formed a panel of judges for the 200 secondary students competing in the
inaugural event.
Sermsak
Soparnont, head of the scrabble club and creator of Thai Scrabble explains
the game.
Dr. Surat Chaichompoo, director of the Chonburi General
Education Department said, “The Thai language is specific to our country
and is unique. We as Thais must take an interest in learning the written
form and speak clearly. Thai Scrabble was created by Sermsak Soparnont and
is not only a part of true Thai ingenuity but a beneficial teaching aid for
students around the nation.
“The game gives them an opportunity to take an interest
in spelling, reading and speaking language correctly as well as increasing
their vocabulary,” Dr. Surat said.
Dr. Surat officially declared the competition open and students competing
in the event began spelling many words that they had never used before and
some familiar ones too.
Neera Srisampan gives “Cross Cultural Training” to Amari Orchid Resort staff
Songklod Kaewvisit
Service in the hotel industry is paramount. The Amari
Orchid Resort in Pattaya recognizes this and as a result provided a cross
cultural training seminar for department heads and key service staff,
enabling them to further understand the needs and requirements of the
guests, most of whom come for a broad variety of backgrounds with large
cultural differences.

Amari
Orchid staff were enthralled by the candid way Neera Srisamphan trained them
on Cross Cultural understanding.

Neera
Sirisampan receives a gift of appreciation from Michael Goetz, executive
assistant manager of the Amari Orchid Resort.
Key speaker at the seminar was Neera Sirisampan,
Assistant Director, International Operations and Neil Maniquiz, of the
International Marketing Department at the Bangkok Pattaya Hospital.
As with any hotel or tourism industry, efficient customer
service is the heart of the business and since the Amari Orchid Resort has
many guests from around the world, cultural sensitivity is important to make
guests feel at ease and enable them to feel warm and welcome.
During the seminar one of the most important aspects was
the need for smooth cooperation between departments to ultimately look after
guest needs. The hotel, seeing the potential difficulties caused by a lack
of understanding and cooperation, is making use of this quiet period to
educate staff on the various subtleties required in the hotel business,
ultimately satisfying their customers and ensuring a healthy business
future.

Association of Filipinos in Thailand - Eastern Region Chapter.
During the lavish buffet, club secretary Gary Bruton
showed an impressive movie featuring the work the club has been doing over
the past year.
Right after dinner, outgoing president Ingo G. Räuber
gave a farewell speech, thanking all the members and sponsors for their
support during his year. He humble asked all members to give the new
president the same support. Dieter H. Précourt, incoming president,
received the highest award given to members from Rotary - the Paul Harris
Fellowship - for the large amount of money he had given to his club.
Afterwards, the district governor ceremoniously adorned
Derek with the club’s chain of presidency, hence officially commencing his
presidency of the Rotary Club of Taksin-Pattaya.
In his acceptance speech Dieter H. Précourt
expressed his pride in belonging to such a great organization, one which has
achieved so much during the past two years.
“The local community has benefited in many ways as a
result of our club and its members’ continuous efforts. Their time and
efforts have left a positive mark in the lives of so many people,” he
said.
Dieter added, “I am aware of the many challenges I face
and what lies ahead of me. I am also aware that Rotary is not a ‘one man
show’ but a team effort. Rotary International has chosen the theme “Lend
a Hand” for the year to come. In my capacity as president I will do all I
can to make this theme become meaningful in the true spirit of Rotary.”
The club’s new president then introduced his new board
of directors: Joachim Gartner, vice president; Gary Bruton, secretary;
Marliese Fritz, treasurer; Peter Thorand, service community director; Ingo
G. Räuber, immediate past president; Ernst Dnnebier,

With the serious business concluded, a little fun was in
order. Guests were entertained by the ‘Honey Bees’, the gorgeous dancers
at the Dusit Resort, and then magician ‘Mr. Ken’ wowed them with his
sleight of hand. Young James Jittiwutthikarn enchanted the audience with his
brilliant classical performance on the piano.
At the end of the event, all the guests walked up to the new president to
wish him luck and all the best and gave him so many flowers that he needed
the theme of Rotary “Lend a Hand” to be able to carry them all!
Happy Birthday, Amrik Singh!
Father of Pattaya Indian community celebrates auspicious 60th birthday
June 7th marked the cheery birthday of a happy father and
grandfather, Amrik Singh, the owner of Taj Mahal tailor shop in South
Pattaya. Amrik Singh is a long term resident of Pattaya City. How long?
Since the time Pattaya was still just a small fishing village on the edge of
the jungle.

Four
generations of the ‘Kalras’ enjoy the birthday cake together

The
legacy moves forever forward - Amrik Singh is adored by his family’s
younger generation.
Although Amrik turned 60 this year he is showing no signs
of slowing down and is going strong year after year.
This year his sons decided to throw a warm and special
party night for their father at the Raj, the newest Indian restaurant in
town on Pattaya Third Road, amidst the growing number of Amrik’s children
and grandchildren.
Amrik Singh wrapped himself in the warmth of love that
glowed from his family.
After many years of hardship and contribution as a
father, a grandfather, an honest businessman, a good and helpful supporter
to his friends of all nationalities and society, and a dedicated devotee to
the Sikh religion, Amrik Singh is not only a generous giver of love and
compassion but the recipient of loyalty and respect by all.
Amrik Singh’s family gathered round to wish their
adored father good health, happiness and long life. Amrik said, “This is
one of the happiest moments of my life. I did not expect much more than
seeing all my family members happy and safe from harm.”
The Pattaya Mail team joined Amrik and his family and friends to wish him
the happiest of birthday celebrations, a long life and the very best of
health.
Austcham June Sundowner - A network for set work
story and photos by Peter Cummins
The Australian-Thai Chamber of Commerce (AustCham) June
Sundowner, on the expansive Third Floor of the Australian Embassy, was a
“sell-out” success. Not a record number of people, for sure, but a very
animated crowd, enjoying the usual excellent fare, fine wines, spirits and
beer, this time sponsored by long-time AustCham supporter, Bangkok’s JW
Marriott Hotel.

The BMJ
team enjoy the show.

Net-workers
all.

Two JW
Marriott beauties.
Corporate sponsor the BMJ Consultancy Group, Co., Ltd.,
offering a wide range of payroll, accounting, tax, human resources logistic
and IT services to both local and international business ventures in
Thailand, sent along some of its attractive staff, as did the Marriott, to
‘network’ with the Chamber members and friends.
The JW Marriott took the opportunity to offer its
“refreshing summer package” at the five-star Sukhumvit facility and the
“Andaman Sea Super Summer Package” at the JW Marriott Phuket Resort and
Spa.
It was certainly an evening of lively inter-change, for
even I departed with some 20 calling cards, phone numbers and appointments
in my pocket - AND I don’t even have a business!
A raffle, based on calling cards dropped into the “fish
bowl”, was a highlight of the evening, with several good bottles of wine
and dinner vouchers offered by the Marriott general manager as the coveted
prizes, happily taken off by the individual winners.
It was interesting to note the extremely tight security at the entrance
to the embassy compound and the Australian Ambassador H.E. Miles Kupa noted
that updated security alerts were being frequently issued by the embassy.
Glam Rock - Queen, Gary Glitter
& KISS play Shenanigans
By Brendan Richards
Shenanigans Pattaya shifted yet again into retro mode
last Friday evening as the Irish pub put on glam rags and wigs for a 70’s
night.

(L to
R) Punk Landlord, Furry & Floral Jason, Shocking Red Harpic and group
manager Peter Malhotra finally come out of the closet and appear in public
dressed as they once did in the 70s.

Far
out, man, wicked psychedelic.
Playing the venue was Mott the Bastards, complete with
glitter gear, wigs and makeup. Not being left out of the act, landlord Kim
Fletcher changed once again into one of his alter egos as Punk Rocker
Landlord.
Jason Payne was feeling floral and the ever-smiling
Harpic joined the red hair brigade with rose colored, star shaped glasses
and knee high boots.
Mott the Bastards whipped up a storm with glam music from
Gary Glitter, rock ‘n’ roll hits from Queen, Suzie Q and numerous
others.
The crowd included a birthday celebration, complete with
music and fuelled by liquid cheer. Chemistry followed, not the popular
chemistry of the era but the type that enables everyone to enjoy the night.
If there had been a stage high enough, these guys would have been diving off
it.

“One
more for the road, Lito...” Mott the Bastards, shining on stage both
literally and metaphorically, jam on glam at Shenanigans Glam Rock night
last Friday.

KISS
drummer, reincarnated!

No,
that’s not Jonathan Winter and Rod Stewart; it’s Mott the Bastards in
70’s mode!
As the hours rolled by Mott the Bastards rocked the Friday night crowd
until the very early hours of the morning with plenty of lubricated
followers. Guaranteed headache material. Yet again this special event proved
the venue is the place in town for a party!
