Elvis is back - in last

Pattaya Sports Club 23rd Members Tournament

Friday October 11, 2002 - Well where to start, as this was the first of the new look, streamlined, four flight, competitions to bring the competition up-to-date with many new categories and innovations including a prize for the last in each division, and I think that’s where I’ll start, as I just can’t resist the pun, try as I might. In the new category of last in each flight, it was nice to see that ‘Elvis is back at (and in) last’. Of the four ‘lasts’, Elvis was the last(est). I feel better now, so back to work.

Elvis is back - although one could argue his golf game has left the building, as he finished "dead last" and proudly shows off the trophy he earned for it.

The competitors, all 56, were met as usual by the new and very efficient booking in system, devised I am given to understand by Joe St Laurent, and were given their start times and flights, all on their cards. Then off to change in the new clubhouse before sauntering down to the tee for their start. The competition was played on the East and South layouts at the Royal Thai Navy Course in Plutaluang, and both first tees were used for the start.

Organisers Bernie Tuppin and Joe St Laurent handled registration.

The new innovations were essentially: four flights, with A & B grouped, and C & D grouped for technical prizes, so we, for example, had two pins on each technical prize green. Also a prize for last in each flight and a prize for best score on the back nine and a few other "bits and pieces".

A & B flight winners Anders Pederson (left) and Marcel Wittner (right) with their spoils of victory.

The course, despite the recent rains, was in fine condition and proved a pleasure to play but this course is a tough test of golf and it was going to be hard to beat it. So it proved; as the scores came in they were generally good without being outstanding.

In the A flight (0 to 12), Anders Pederson came first with 37 points, with Gary Blackburn second with 36 points and David Claas third with 35 points.

C flight winner Bob (yes another photo) Benda.

In the B flight (13 to 19), Marcel Wittner won with the best score of the day 42 points, second was Ebrahim with 40 points and third Bob Moberg with 39 points.

D flight winner Joe St Laurent with his prizes.

In the C flight (20 to 24), Bob Benda (yes another photo) came first with 40 points, second was Norman Brooks with 39 points and he beat George Davis into third place on count back, also 39 points.

In the D flight (24 to 36) we had a three way count back to decide the first three positions, all on 36 points. First was Joe St Laurent, second was Les Greaves and third was Big Pete Galle.

The Royal Thai Navy Course in Plutaluang.

The presentations over, the competitors enjoyed the free draw with sponsors’ prizes and some really good cheap hospitality from the staff in the restaurant.

Once again thanks go to all the organisers and the sponsors, P.S.C, Green Bottle, Cafe Kronborg, Tequila Reef, Green Parrot, Shenanigans, Gilligans, Jenny Lieu and of course Papa Ray.

At the end of the day the ‘Star’ of the day was in last place and Elvis is back.

Results:

A Flight winner: Anders Pederson 37 points, second Gary Blackburn 36 points, third David Claas 35 points.

B Flight winner: Marcel Wittner 42 points, second Ebrahim 40 points, third Bob Moberg 39 points.

C Flight winner: Bob Benda 40 points, second Norman Brooks 39 points, third George Davis 39 points.

D Flight winner: Joe St Laurent 36 Points, second Les Greaves 36 points, third Pete Galle 36 Points.

Long drive: A & B flights: Anders Pederson C & D flights: Peter Alfthan.

Nearest pin: A & B flights S4 Bob Morrison, S7 Philippe Berra, E2 Marcel Wittner, and E5 Ebrahim. C & D flights: S4 Norman Brooks, S7, Bryn Jones, E2 Joe St Laurent, and E5 Pete Galle.

Fun Categories

Best Front Nine South: Larry Willet

Best Back Nine East: Hwang Yong Hwan

Last place: A flight Barry Barnes 21 points, B Elvis Cronan 15 points, C Peter Alfthan 19 points, D Johan Albrecht 19 points.

The charity event raised funds for the club’s charity activities including scholarships for poor students and kitchen appliances for the Samakhee temple.

Big matches and Princess Cup trophy winners

Cafe Kronborg Monday Bowling League

The last two weeks, the Cafe Kronborg Monday Bowling League had some big matches. The league also proudly announces that some of the girls played in the Princess Cup on Sunday, and that Songkran won the cup. Many of the other girls also took home team prizes, well done!

The winning Monday bowlers at the Princess Cup, from left: Lek, Nual, Porn, Kran, Wan, Udom and Pin.

Monday Sept. 30, Mio’s first place team got beaten 3-1 by Tue’s second place team, with both Mio and Tue bowling 200+ games (223& 206). Tue had the stronger backing from her team on the day.

From left: Wan 225, Gert 213, Mio 211, and La 200.

Kran’s team in 3rd won 3-1 against La’s and in the last match Jeed’s team beat Bill’s team 3-1.

On Monday Oct. 7, Tue’s team again made up ground on Mio’s lead by beating Kran’s team 4-0, with Gert on Tue’s team bowling a 213 game.

From left: Mio 223, Tue 206.

Mio’s team could only pull out a 2-2 draw against Jeed’s, in a close match, with Mio bowling a 211 game, but this was matched by Wan on Jeed’s side and her 225 game.

In the last match of the day Bill’s team won 3-1 against La’s team. La’s 200 game was not enough to win this match.

There was a good turnout both weeks, and it was good to see Konrad, Sven and Suphan back after their long holidays.

Shakey Pete’s holds onto first place after week 23

Pattaya Sports Club Friday Bowling League

Shakey Pete’s is still in first place but lost a little ground to the Winchester Club after winning three points from Three Sisters behind La’s 214 game and 520 series and Tui’s 506-pin count. Gert was best for the Three Sisters with a 213 game and 529 series.

Winchester Club, who was tied for second place, is now in second all alone and gained a half point on the first place team after taking all four points from Cafe Kronborg. Otto had a 503 series for Winchester and Ken had a 202 first game.

House of the Golden Coin moved into third place after taking four points from VFW Post 9876. Mio led all bowlers on the day with games of 221, 212 and 183 for a 616 series, and Nual chipped in with a 527 series to lead the House of the Golden Coin to victory.

Nice & Sleazy moved into fourth place after taking three points from a poor bowling Cafe Ole team who only had Wan in form, bowling a 507 series.

Fitness Tips: Sex!

G’day Readers,

Yep, I’m using an attention grabbing headline again to get you to read the article. Now that you have a smile on your face let’s take a look at this week’s fitness tips.

Brisk walk just as good

We all know that walking is a great form of exercise for people of all ages and fitness levels. A recent study by The New England Journal of Medicine found that brisk walking is just as good for the heart as vigorous exercise, which is great news if you are scared of joining a health or sports club. Walking is a great way to get started on the road to physical well being and you might just be surprised by how many people do exercise walk (not just stroll but really get up and go for it) to keep their body functioning well.

I was out this morning doing some running and riding and over the course of 2 hours, I was not quite shocked but very much pleasantly surprised by the high number and broad diversification of people out striding it out along Beach Road.

That led me into this week’s article, as I thought that I’d do a bit of research to see what has been released lately on the benefits of walking, specifically for entry level participants. Beach Road this morning saw the whole spectrum, there were some guys and girls in the early twenties at various walking speeds from a stroll right up to a power walk. There were some older ladies power walking with hand weights and even about a dozen men in their 50’s and 60’s fast walking the distance and carrying water bottles.

The older fellas were the most impressive ones, they were there distinctly for exercise. They knew they were going to be out on the pebble deck for a longer period of time and knew that sufficient hydration was crucial to ensure the workout was effective while not going to knock them out for the rest of the day. Well done to all of you.

Anyway, the study looked at 72,488 female nurses aged between 40 and 65 with no signs of cardiovascular disease. It was found that women who walked briskly for at least three hours per week reduced their risk of coronary events by 30 to 40%. These results were equivalent to females who exercised vigorously for one and a half hours per week. Vigorous exercise usually involves some sort of dependence on others; team sports or exercise to music classes, etc. most of which revolve around some sort of schedule and then you must ensure you get the full 1.5 hours each 7 days. Where as brisk walking for 26 minutes per day at any time of day will achieve basically the same thing with less wear and tear on your body.

If you can get your workout done alone and you are looking for an option that might be enjoyable, give walking a try. Done somewhere scenic it can be not only good for you and will make you feel good but it will also be enjoyable.

How about another sport?

Do you want a sport that can be participated in at a competitive level or even just for the fun of the workout? If you are looking to take up a sport that is a bit demanding, has more than one discipline, combines 3 of the most effective cardiovascular exercises, has events off road, on islands, in the jungle, or on controlled flat road surfaces, then give triathlon a go. Swimming, cycling and running all together with race durations from as little as under an hour up to any distance you care for all occur in our local area. Give me a call at Dusit Resort Sports Club 038 425611-fitness or check out www.bangkoksports.com

You don’t need to be fit to try it out but it will make you fit and healthy while you are having fun! Watch this space for more news on the local multi sports/triathlon scene.

By the way, the middle guitarist for Jethro Tull (the answer to Mott the Dog’s trivia question on page 14) was Toni Iommi, who was only in the band for a couple of months. He then went on to form Black Sabbath with Ozzy Osbourne, but he is seen on the video on Tull’s appearance on the Rolling Stones Rock ‘n’ Roll Circus.

Carpe’ Diem

Trevor Edge has the best of the week

IPGC TAGGS Golf from The Haven

Monday October 7 Green Valley Stableford

1st: Trevor Edge, 40 points cb9 21

2nd: Bill Campbell, 40 cb9 19

3rd: Richard Lyne, 38 cb9 20

4th: Brian Wilkinson, 38 cb9 19

5th: B.J. Smith, 37

A fair wind and dry conditions led to some very good scoring at the unusually quiet Green Valley layout.

Trevor Edge, disguised as an extra from "The Planet of the Apes", battled through physical and mental anguish to record an outstanding victory, albeit after a close count back with second placed man, Bill Campbell. It was Bill’s first podium position at The Haven and he is now looking forward to emulating his namesakes Doug and Bill and recording a few more successes in the future.

The ever-present Richard Lyne took third place, also going to count back with Brian Wilkinson over the back nine.

After just missing out on the podium position, B.J. Smith swept the twos pool on his own, to make up for the disappointment at not winning another golf shirt.

Back at The Haven Richard Livingston, the resident PGA Professional, welcomed back Brian Wilkinson from Norway, Bill Campbell from the USA, Paul Hartley from the Middle East together with Doug Campbell and Christoph Davisson, both from the North of England.

Wednesday October 9 Burapha West Stroke Play

1st: Max Arlen, 73 cb9 37

2nd: Peter Christianssen, 73 cb9 34

3rd: Mike Morris, 74

A lively group of golfers set off for the week’s stroke play competition, played over the West course from the blue tees in the serene surroundings of Burapha. Their anticipations were soon stifled when play commenced and the first wayward shots found their way to the rough. This was not too difficult to achieve, as the fairways were only twenty yards wide in some places. In some cases it might have been better to have taken three from the tee than face the hacking exercise to get it back to the short stuff. But it was indeed a good and fair test of golf and it was no surprise to find the lower handicappers in the forefront of the eventual scoring.

Max Arlen was the exception to the rule as he carefully managed his round to run up another win and squeeze out the straight and long hitting Peter Christianssen, who is still coming to terms with an injury that left him with fewer fingers to grip the club with.

Mike Morris rounded out the prizewinners with a round that owed a lot to his strength in dealing with the punishing conditions of the course.

There were no twos on the day and therefore the pot was carried forward.

Prior to the prize giving Richard welcomed back Gary Welch and Richard Kinneman both on a well-earned rest from their travails in Korea.

Friday October 11 Century Ban Chan Bogey

1st: Doug Campbell, 3 up

2nd: Russell Finch, 2 up

3rd: Stephen Beard, all square

It is not often that you can pay less than ten dollars US for a green fee and a caddy and feel that you have bought the course, but this was the case as several of the usual contenders were away at other courses sharpening up their skills for the forthcoming season of major competitions. And with no other players to be seen, the competitors on the day flew round the eighteen holes, which allowed an extra time slot at the various watering holes on the way back to The Haven.

Doug Campbell proved to be the best man of the day, having lost the first two holes and even allowing for a casual last hole that caused him to drop a hole to "Old Man Par". He still managed to take the days honours, although for some inextricable reason, not the cash from his playing partners.

Russell and the "Doc" had to be content to be runners up after they both finished poorly.

Malcolm Clare took the twos pool together with the carry over on his own.

No fears for Nora

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the Bunker

It takes all sorts to make a world and Pattaya lives by that doctrine as well. "Mr Loy", Roy Mitchell, showed his masochistic alter ego on Tuesday, 8th October, when he chose the "man-eater" at Treasure Hill for the second time in two weeks, as the venue for the Bunker Boys’ weekly stroke play event.

On a hot day the twenty-five or so golfers toiled under a merciless sun on heavily sanded fairways and greens to try once again to tame the course which has become their "bete noir".

Man-eater it may be but Nora Haugsjordet is, of course, a lady and she shot the day’s only sub par round when she won the ladies division with a fine net 69, leaving Beth Lill trailing a very long way behind on net 87!

In division one there was a second successive win for Steve Nowell whose 76 was just enough to push David Smith (77) into second place and the Italian-Australian mix of Ciano Glavina into third with his 79.

In division two the consistency of John King saw him take the day with net 79, a shot ahead of Duncan Lee and a further shot ahead of Norman Brooks.

Terry Phur successfully birdied the very short sixth hole to win the Bunker Super Sawng award before acting as Good Samaritan, chauffeuring a sick playing companion to hospital.

The course threw up its usual mass of candidates for the Bunker Banana Booby and amongst those breathing a sigh of relief at the presentation were Mr Loy (gotcha!), Jon Wood, Ian Phillips and PJ Redmond, but it was Colin Walker who took his first Bunker award home in a Foodland bag! What can we say Mr Loy? The words "men" and "white coats" spring readily to mind.

Easy Ryder at Phoenix

Phoenix Country Club played host to the Bunker on the occasion of its third annual "Ryder Cup" match play challenge between England and the Rest of the World on Thursday and Friday, 10/11th October. The course was well presented and the greens were surprisingly fast as the first day opened.

Tension mounted with the temperatures all day as the first three pairs went to the Rest of the World, with the pairing of Ciano Glavina and Nora Haugsjordet looking particularly strong.

Then came a surge by England to tie the match with Ken Lill and Paul Hartley leading the way. England team captain, Harry Riley, allowed himself a smile only to see the final tie going to the PJ Redmond and Noi Chaiyosit at the final hole.

The day ended 4-3 to the Rest of the World.

The second day dawned with some withdrawals but a hasty reshuffle of groups saw a titanic struggle from the start. After five ties the Rest of the World was looking almost unassailable with their 8-3 total but England forced their way back into the picture as Paul Hartley saw off the first day heroine, Saranya Chaiyanont, and Len Jones and Clive Harris held their fancied lady opponents at bay for victories.

Excitement mounted again as Harry Riley and David Johnson entered the locker-room wearing broad grins. Two ties had been halved and the overall result on the final day ended at 9 - 9. An honourable draw was a fitting result for a wonderful and happy two-day event.

The “Admiral”, Philippe Berra and Hwang Yong Hwan win the week

P.S.C. Golf from the Cafe Kronborg

Monday October 7 Royal Thai Navy Plutaluang Golf Course (Stableford)

On our monthly trip to this fine 36 hole layout the players were led by our own tame ‘Jack Tar’, the Admiral, who is never short of a navy tale and is also quite good at taking the rest of the golfers to the cleaners on this course. Maybe it’s the smell of the sea that gives him the extra get up and go here. But Dave has suffered a chop in his handicap the last few weeks of 4 shots so maybe the rest had a chance?

The "Admiral" was a winner at the navy course.

The courses played were the South and East layouts for this Stableford competition in one flight, and considering the amount of rainfall of late the course was in very fine condition.

Surprise, surprise; despite the handicap cut the winner was the ‘tournament director’ Dave Richardson with a fine 37 points. Second was Bob Morrison with 34 points who beat Pete Galle, also 34 points, into third on count back. Fourth was Philippe Berra on 31 points.

Philippe Berra won the A flight at Siam CC on Thursday.

Thursday October 10 Siam Country Club (Stroke)

This is essentially the ‘Home Course’ for most of the golfers in Pattaya because it is the closest course and the course has been here for a long time so many of the regulars are members and course specialists. Normally one would expect really good scores here with so many experts but it was noticed that the tees were all back and a strong wind in the opposite direction to usual was not going to help the scoring, a combination of wind and back tees bringing many hazards to the fore, and the woods beckoned. Playing medal also would put a strain on the game in the conditions, there was to be no bail out.

Hwang Yong Hwan took B flight honors at Siam Country Club on Thursday, October 10, 2002.

In the circumstances a field of 30 teed off with a strong wind behind to battle the course and the elements, and the course was in fine condition and was pleasure to play, but it wasn’t long before the difficulty of the day became apparent and the realisation that today would not be a day of record scores.

Sitting in the clubhouse as the scores came in I was surprised never the less that all these course specialists were turning in mediocre scores, usually there is always one who shines, but at the end of the day only one person beat his handicap. I suspect it will be a long time before it happens again, still as they say, you only have to win the test on the day.

The competitors were split into two flights, A flight (0 to 18) and B flight (19 and upwards). The winner of the A flight was Philippe Berra, back with us again, on a net 72. Second with a net 73 was Brian Wilkinson beating Ebrahim into third place on count back, also net 73.

In the B flight the winner, with the best round of the day, was Hwang Yong Hwan with a net 70. Second with a net 74 was Bob (what no photo) Benda and third was Katri Albrecht net 75 on count back over Paul Kraft.

Near pins: No 4 Bob Moberg, No 8 Johan Albrecht, No 12 Philippe Berra, and No 16 Jim Boyd.

It’s a family affair

PSC Golf from the Three Sisters

October 7 brought the family together. Fred Theobald turned the heat on and blazed the field with 38 points while his wife Toy stumbled to the bottom to be the bag holder for the week. Fred came close to being the bag holder previously, but turned the tables on the rest of the field this week.

Fred Theobald won the bragging rights at the 3 Sisters competition on Monday Oct 7. Wife Toy came in holding the bag while Chris John looks on with disappointment in the rear.

With the greens at Siam vastly improved, it was surprising that lower scores did not appear. A couple of competitors tried to pass Fred but could not pull it off.

For the first time, PSC Golf from the Three Sisters had a woman holding up the rest of the field. The last time a woman played with the group, they were all left in her wake. Hopefully Toy Theobald will get back on her game and pass on the bag to the next holder of the bottom spot.

Europeans and Colonials halve inaugural FRYder Cup

IPGC Golf From Lewiinski - Orchid

Sunday October 5
Green Valley - White Tees
The FRYder Cup
Men - Match Play & Stroke
Ladies - Stableford

Overall Winner - David Claas - 64 net

Best European - Klaus Schackt - 66 net

Best Colonial - Steve Donovan - 68 net

Nearest the Pins: No. 2 Eddie Blackwell, No. 9 - Klaus Schackt, No. 12 - Ian Ashenden, and No. 16 - Julian Clarke.

Long putt: No. 2 - Frank Sinclair

The Inaugural FRYder Cup was played on European Captain Stan Fry’s actual birth date and was a resounding success. The Colonials (even though the American core group was supplemented by Canadians, Australians and one American resident Brit) were anxious to avenge the loss of their professional counterparts at the Belfry not long ago. Revenge was not forthcoming but then neither was the "agony of defeat" as the two sides, through 27 matches, finished in a most improbable 13 1/2 to 13 1/2 draw.

The 18 Europeans and 18 Colonials formed 9 foursomes, with each foursome having three competitions, two 2-ball matches and one 4-ball match. The prevailing side received 1 point for each victory and 1/2 point to both for a halved match. The ninth group out had already closed out their two 2-balls on the 17th, with only the 4-ball still in the balance. Both teams were tied 13 to 13. Amazingly, their 4-ball ended halved! Oh, the stories that followed of what could have been. There was Ian Ashenden 24-ft birdie putt that was covered by Joe Mooneyham’s 18-foot birdie putt to result in a half. There was Darren Smith’s chip that stopped two inches short. There was Ian Halfpenny’s putt that hopped, not lipped, out on 18. And so the "what ifs" went.

Although the thought of the "conflict in interests’ of coupling a match play event with a stroke event sent chills up some purists’ spines, this fun day also had the players competing in a Stroke/Medal play competition with three awards being made: Best Overall, Best European and Best Colonial. David Claas playing for the Colonials shot a best of his life gross 74, net 64, to capture the Overall. Klaus Schackt playing for the Europeans wasn’t far back with a gross 77, net 66, performance. Because the Overall came from the ranks of the Colonials, the second highest of their lot received Best Colonial, and isn’t it a surprise that the golf manager was the benefactor of this ruling. He shot 85 for net 68.

It should not go unmentioned that pro Ian Ashenden shot level par 72 on the day.

Four ladies competed in a separate Stableford comp and An Kasavane edged Ning Morris 32 points to 31 points.

The technical prize recipients each received free lodging good for a short amount of time.

A great time on the day was had by all and was complimented by the field, and a number of additional friends, wishing Stan a "Happy Birthday" at the Classroom A-Go-Go afterwards. Although in his honor, Stan generously provided an excellent buffet and bought the crowded house a round.

Tuesday October 8
Laem Chabang - A & B - White Tees
Stroke/Medal

1st A Flight - Julian Clarke - 40 points

2nd A Flight - Joe Mooneyham - 38 points

3rd A Flight - Klaus Schackt - 36 points

1st B Flight - Jim Boyd - 34 points

2nd B Flight -Pete Stonebridge- 33 points

3rd B Flight - Brian Wilkenson - 32 points

The A Flighters showed their quality of play by providing the top six finishers on the day. Julian Clarke took home the first prize that he vowed to put towards his departure expenses, given his Thursday return to the U.S. Klaus Schackt won on count back from three fellow competitors who shot their handicap on the day: Kevin Ward, Darren Smith and Rick Sharp.

Jim Boyd will be able to make his first car payment on his beautiful new rig despite his humble 34 points. Pete Stonebridge, relegated to the high handicap flight only due to the quality of the field, showed he was willing to stoop to take some B Flight money while he was there and garnered second place. Brian Wilkerson edged Steve Donovan and Svein Vistung on count back for third. There was talk among some that Donovan was "slipping" as this was the first recorded instance where he did not somehow manipulate the results to his advantage.

The gang said "good-bye" to Phil Mitchell who will be back in awhile, much to the chagrin of his fellow competitors.

Wednesday October 9
Khao Kheow - Yellow Tees
Medal/Stroke

1st A Flight - Julian Clarke - 34 points

2nd A Flight - Klaus Schackt - 32 points

1st B Flight - An (Oradee) Kaesavane - 40 points

2nd B Flight - Jim Boyd - 34 points

Since last week’s assault from the blue tees at Bangpra, the roosters of A Flight wanted to take on the 7077 yard blue tees at Khao Kheow. The more humble, and golf challenged, balance of the field was willing to be content with the 6359 yard yellow tees. When the field arrived to the first tee it was greeted by a lovely day, but a howling one to two club wind. Amid whimpering of "Gee, its windy" and "Gosh, I didn’t know it was over 7000 yards" the A Flighters came crawling forward to the yellow tees. Perhaps having been emasculated by the events on the first tees, the best of A Flight was only 34 points, but it did provide Julian funds for Airport Tax and such other ancillary departure expenses he would soon incur. His mates would surely have chipped in if he were short just so someone else could have a shot at the brass ring.

While her other half snuck in for second in the low handicap division, An (Oradee) wowed the field with the best on the day 40 points! There was nobody closer than six points to her! A fantastic score given the conditions and her tidy 19 handicap.

Jim Boyd, who came second in B, explained his recent elevation in playing form as being due to the fact that he doesn’t want to have to sell any stock to make his car payments. See ya back soon Julian!

Friday October 10
Natural Park Hill - White Tees
Stableford

1st A Flight - Stan Fry - 37 points

2nd A Flight - Eddie Blackwell - 37 points

3rd A Flight - Jim Brackett - 36 points

1st B Flight - Toy Theobald - 38 points

2nd B Flight -Jimmee Little - 35 points

3rd B Flight - Svein Vistung - 34 points

The final day of a great week of golf was capped with an exclamation mark with the competition being held at the toughest par 72 layout on the Eastern Seaboard, Natural Park Hill. Co-President Stan Fry edged Eddie Blackwell on the second level of count back, the last 6 holes, for first place in A Flight. Brushing off the dust (sand?) of weeks in the Omani desert, Toy Theobald showed a return to form by having the best on the day 38 points. Jimmee Little, who whenever he finds himself a little short on cash signs up to play at Lewiinski-Orchid, took the second step on the podium in B Flight. Despite having two single figure handicappers return home this week, the A flight handicap cutoff was still 12!

Sinanikhon team wins YWCA Badminton Junior Championship

The youthful team from Sinanikhon won the recently held YWCA Badminton Junior Championships held October 2-6 at the Amata Nakhorn Industrial Estate.

The top three YWCA Badminton Junior Championship girls’ teams display their hard won trophies.

Youngsters from all over Thailand participated in the 5-day tournament, and the Amata Nakhorn Industrial Estate’s huge sports hall was packed to the rafters with people who came to cheer on their families and friends.

The Pahapak team finished second, followed by the shuttlecock racketeers from BG Sports Club in third place.

Since last year’s competition was such a huge success, the ladies of the YWCA decided to make the Badminton Junior Championship an annual event.

The top three YWCA Badminton Junior Championship boys’ teams take to the podium to receive their honors.

Just to show what a big event this was, honored guests in the stands and presiding over the prize-giving ceremonies included MP of Chonburi Vitthaya Khunpluem, Noreerat Noparatanaraporn, executive director of YWCA Bangkok, Professor Thira Sutabutra, former president of Kasetsart University, Chitra Wattanasin, chairwoman of YWCA Bangkok-Chonburi Center and her husband Charoen Wattanasin, president of the Badminton Association of Thailand, who just happens to be a multiple Badminton Champion of Thailand, twice World Champion, finalist in the All England Championship and won the gold-medal in the Asian Games.

The Pattaya YWCA chapter was represented by President Nittaya Patimasongkroh and former president Premruedee Jittiwutthikarn. Many members and friends joined the final day of competition including Peter Thorand of the Rotary Club Taksin Pattaya and vice president, Dieter Precourt.

Lovely Khornchanok Podrummit of YWCA Pattaya Chapter was an excellent Mistress of Ceremonies during the awards presentation.

Chitra Wattanasin gave a moving speech, honoring the hard work done by all the people involved, especially the young children, who gave their best during the tournament.

Chitra stressed how important it is to show children the joy of sports and how wholesome activities such as these will not only keep them away from bad habits but also develop their minds and bodies.

All participants received a medal and a certificate, presented by the guests of honor.

What’s coming up? October - November

by Mike Franklin

We are now in the season when quite a few major tournaments are on the Pattaya schedule. Next up is the 9th TQ Masters on Friday October 25th competing for the coveted Green Jacket, won last year by Frank Polizotto. This will be at Plutaluang and not at Pattaya Country Club as previously advertised. Some courses are no longer allowing sponsor’s beer to be given out, which for bars like TQ and Shenanigans is unacceptable as it is part of their traditional hospitality on the day.

Now, I am sure readers of Pattaya Mail get tired of me advising them to sign-up early for the major tournaments, and probably think it’s just sales talk. can assure you it is not. The Shenanigans Irish Open was sold out 10 days before the event.

The TQ Masters is sold out, but we do get cancellations with people being called back to work, so if you have not signed up already contact me or Joe Otter at TQ Beach Road and we will fit you in if we can.

The list for Diana Gold next month on November 15th already has nearly 40 names on it, so sign-up for that at the Diana Inn. See John Cole or reception.

The dates for the majors are well publicized up to a year ahead on notice boards, in the press, and on web pages. So note the dates in a diary and sign-up as early as you can. I get e-mail bookings from golfers who do not arrive until just before the event, so they don’t miss out.

In November, there are seven majors in all, starting with Bjarne Nielsen’s Birthday Scramble on Thursday November 7th at Phoenix Golf & Country Club.

Friday November 15th is the ‘Diana Gold’ Charity Golf tournament at Plutaluang, sponsored by Carlsberg and Chivas Regal, all proceeds in aid of the Chonburi Juvenile and Family Court Observation & Protection Center and to provide scholarships for children at Banglamung Schools. The usual technical prizes of at least one baht weight in gold on every hole. The forms are out - sign-up at the Diana Inn, or contact me.

The CAN-AM is the day after on Saturday 16th November at Siam C.C. Golfers who played last year get an invite, otherwise very little chance of getting in.

Thursday 21st November is Papa San Ray Rogers annual Thanksgiving tournament and party back at ‘Chez Ray’. Families and friends, as well as the golfers, are welcome. I don’t have to tell you to sign-up early for that one!

Shenanigans are having another Ladies International Open in late November or early December - date and venue to be advised.

Then Friday December 6th is the annual TAGGS Invitational, venue also to be advised.

Finally, for those that know Keeratika Lohakoon, ‘Jas’ to her friends, you will be pleased to know that she is now a qualified PGTTA Teaching Professional, resident at Eastern Star Resort. The course has many improvements completed or underway and is offering a 300 baht weekday green fee up to December 15th.

Finally, the Khun Anand Panyarachun Charity Golf Invitational tournament for Special Olympics Thailand takes place at Eastern Star on November 30th. This is to help provide children and adults with mental disabilities the opportunity to develop their physical fitness and experience the joy of achievement and be accepted as an integral part of the community. For me, a really worthwhile project to be involved in.

The Square Ring

by Howie Reed

As Kaowichit Denkaosaen (20-0, 8 KOs) prepared for his challenged to WBA flyweight champion Eric Morel last Saturday night he issued a challenge of his own. "Fight me face-to-face and toe-to-toe. The ring is for fighting not for running." Eric "Little Hands of Steel" Morel (31-0) left the impression that he was going to "dance with the gal that brung him". Dance in and out, start with a good strong jab and then follow with the power right. With only 8 KO’s, it’s hard to believe that Kaowichit wanted to get into a slug feast. The Thai’s major problem was his habit of dropping his right when he would push his less than devastating slow left jab. Morel took advantage of this fault to answer with the right hooks all night long. Well, that is as long as the night lasted. The fight was close early only because Kaowichit forced the issue and was able to cut off the ring early. As it had to, Morel’s speed and power took control from the 6th round on. This although his nose was spouting blood like the Fountains at the Royal Garden from 2:15 of the first round on. In the 11th a crashing right dropped Kaowichit for the count of 7. He would last only another 30 seconds before a left hook ended it at 1:40 of that round. The Thai fought with heart and desire but that will very seldom beat speed, experience and power. It didn’t Saturday night at the Pond in Anaheim.

Big news out of the Emerald Isle in regard to Ireland’s favorite son, Wayne "The Pocket Rocket" McCullough (25-3-0). Thanks to his many fans throughout the world, including his really good fans in Pattaya, Wayne has been voted Irish Sports Personality of the Year by Big Buzz magazine. Right on and let’s all raise a Guinness or 10. Scotty at the Classroom buys.

Not so much good news if you’re a POM or their Olympic Gold guy, Audley Harrison. Many hopped he was going to lead to heavyweight supremacy. Depending on who you believe that may not be the case. The wire services reported his latest KO as follows. "Unbeaten Heavyweight Audley Harrison moves to 7-0 in Liverpool with a destructive second round stoppage of American Wade Lewis. Harrison scored three knockdowns in total with one in the first and two in the second before the referee stopped the bout after 43 seconds of the second round."

The Square Ring’s English correspondent, Phil Jones, saw the fight in a different light: "Two years ago, after winning the coveted super-heavyweight gold medal at the Sydney Olympics, Audley Harrison was hailed an all-conquering hero. He came back to mega-bucks offers to turn pro and was widely predicted to be a future Heavyweight champion of the world. Not any longer if his latest forage into world boxing is a sample of what he has to offer. He stopped journeyman Wade Lewis after just 43 seconds of round two, but my granny would have made much shorter work of a fighter who couldn’t and wouldn’t fight. His fans are disappearing in their droves. The thousand or so who bothered to turn up to watch another pathetic display against another pathetic opponent must have wondered why. Audley’s 6 wins out of 6 fights looks creditable on paper, but you could walk into any local bar on a Saturday night and find 6 more worthy opponents than he has yet faced. Audley started his mega-bucks prime time TV deal in a blaze of over-hype to a packed audience at the massive Wembley Arena. It’s a far cry from there to an ex dance hall in Liverpool in front of a handful of derisory fans chanting ‘Who the ‘F’ are you’. He compares himself at this stage of his career to World Champion Lennox Lewis, but in reality he should be making that comparison not to Lennox Lewis but to Jerry Lewis." Early this week it was bad news for the home team. Two Thai fighters, one an ex champ, got their "comeuppance" at the hands of the lads from the Rising Sun. WBA #5 ranked ex-world interim minimum champ Songkram Porpaoin (22-5-2, 12 KOs) was on the short end of a majority decision (78-76, 79-74 and 78-78) to Katsunari Takayakma (10-0, 5 KOs) in 8. Songkram hit the deck with his glove in the 6th after a solid left. The Judge that had it 74-74 is looking for his guide dog and work outside Japan. Akihiko Nago (20-3, 13 KOs) added to his KO numbers making short work of Sakmongkol Singmanasak (15-12, 4 KOs). He got the job done with a "wicked left", not to be confused with a regular left, at 1:39 of the second round. Kozo Ishii (29-3, 21 KOs) hung the "snyd" on Wichit Chuwatana (26-12, 9 KOs) with a 100-90, 100-93 and 100-91 REALLY unanimous decision over the ex-Thai super-bantam Champ.

PH3 Run 970

G’day. Well another fine day for a run! I turned up with Chicken Nugget and Sir CF only to meet Fini and have him tell me I was to be the scribe for this week. Great, I thought, I’ll have to stay off the beer a bit more than usual so I can keep up with everything.

It nearly all came unstuck though as I went down to see Sir CF late Tuesday, only to find he had given the notes I had scrawled all night on the Carlsberg box to some passing bag lady! Fortunately he chased her down and negotiated a short time with her in exchange for the box, so the notes survived.

Nice to see some new faces and some old ones back again. Always good to have visitors. Anyhow on to the run. After the circle was called the hares were in to explain about the run (Fini’s terminology). Mr Sheen did the talking and VV after Wee Weeing and Voo Vooing led us to the start, I guess they ran out of paper... Great run, with a bit of everything, hardly any tapioca for a change! And from what I hear about the weather lately, not too much water, just enough to make Tampax whinge had he not been busy fixing his own water supply?

So the munchies and post run drinks started. Soon the circle was called and first item was the knickers found in the circle. Scar with 2 Ts in to explain and take some medicine. With that out of the way, we launched into what must be the longest raffle ever had on the Hash! Free Willy obviously having a lucky day, but still getting punished for winning 3 times! Hares in to receive accolades for a job well done. Mr Sheen, a virgin hare after 8 years of hashing, so well done to him. Visitors came in and then Mad Cow did a bit of ice licking again! Following that 32 returners.

The heroes came in for keeping Derelick away! Mobile in to have the Hash trash given away to Mr Sheen.

So on to the inquisition... F the Truths mug was missing. Eventually the King came in and everyone was vindicated. I think the most sensible comment came from "A jury of one" - C Face with "Shut the woman up" but seriously, good that the mug showed up.

The Hares had no rousing Belgian song, so Sir CF in for a great rendition of "Muff Divers in the sky". After that we had the Hash Hymn, which not too many people are taking seriously anymore. I guess you can’t blame them though, as the dash to Patrick’s’ was on. Excellent food once again. I just didn’t like the old waiter who looked like Fini!

B52s were had out front, oh the price you pay for sitting with the most beautiful cracks on the hash. Did we ice all the Belgians? Hope so!

Another night of hashing over and another headache in the morning.
