Five Schools in the Banglamung district were the grateful recipients of 70,000 baht worth of sports equipment donated by the Pattaya Sports Club.

Pattaya Sports Club charity chairman, Bernie Tuppin (center), on behalf of the PSC, presented sports equipment to representatives of Banglamung District primary schools.

In a small ceremony held on Oct. 8th at the Banglamung district schools office, PSC charity chairman, Bernie Tuppin presented sports equipment including footballs, basketballs, takraw and volleyballs, a ping-pong table and nets used in various sports to Siva Tarsai, assistant chief of the Banglamung District primary schools on behalf of school administrators and teachers.

Siva said, "This is a wonderful opportunity to receive such equipment. It will be put to good use by the students in their sporting activities. The equipment will be distributed to 5 schools in the district and will be much appreciated by the children."

The Pattaya Sports Club donated the equipment as part of their community service projects in an effort to support and promote sports among the children of Pattaya, ultimately enabling them to live healthier lives through exercise.

The PSC is a non-profit organization and currently has over 10,000 members worldwide. Money raised through the club’s various projects is then donated in the form of goods and services that provide maximum benefit to the underprivileged and the community at large.

Four of Pattaya’s Lions Clubs and the guest club from Sattahip met last week for a "Service and Family Evening" at the Town in Town Hotel. Lions’ members and their families packed the hotel’s Srivara Room to also celebrate World Lions Day and the formation of Lions in Thailand.

Held on October 8, the evening was filled with fun and games with each club putting on a small show for the audience, which was followed by plenty of children’s games. The fellowship evening was spent in a warm and friendly atmosphere while adults chatted and shared their experiences in Lions’ service with special guests from Lions Clubs in Korea.

New members were pinned and current members were presented with awards for their service to the community.

Honored guests for the evening were Lion International District Governor for district 310C Somsak Loohwisoot and past District Governor Naris Petcharat who performed the pinning and presentation to members who most embodied the ideal of the Lions’ motto ‘We Serve’.

Photographic exhibition “Southeast by Southwest” by Charles Freeland

26 October - 13 November 2002 at Rotunda Gallery

"Southeast by Southwest" is a photographic exhibition of Southeast Asia and the southwestern part of the USA, by American photographer Charles Freeland. His black and white limited edition photographs communicate a mood of reflection and meditation in which the viewer is invited to step for a moment outside this bustling world, cluttered with noise and ugliness, into a special place, a world of quiet serenity and timeless beauty.

Although Burma, Thailand and New Mexico are widely separated culturally and geographically, they still have some things in common. Charles Freeland shows us how both regions contain places of unique cultural and historical importance where people, landscapes and architecture have conjoined to create places of matchless beauty and atmosphere, creating worlds seemingly set apart from all others. Rather than being representations of these places, these photographs attempt to communicate - through a play of light and shadow, color and atmosphere - something of the healing solace and quiet grace they offer, like a gift to every visitor.

About the Photographer: Charles Freeland is the director of the Humanities Program at the Mahidol University International College. Much of his current interest in photography has grown out of the research and documentation he has done for his classes in the arts of Thailand and Southeast Asia. The photographs were taken using a Hasselblad medium format camera. All proceeds from the exhibition will be donated to a charity for children with AIDS.

The Opening Reception will be presided over by Prof. Dr. Chariya Brockelman, director of Mahidol University International College on October 26, 2002 at 6:30 p.m., at the Rotunda Gallery, Neilson Hays Library, 195 Suriwongse Road, Bangkok, Thailand.

Opening hours: Tuesday, Thursday - Saturday: 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Wednesday: 9:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m., Sunday: 9:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
