Photographic exhibition “Southeast by Southwest” by Charles Freeland
26 October - 13 November 2002 at Rotunda Gallery
"Southeast by Southwest" is a photographic
exhibition of Southeast Asia and the southwestern part of the USA, by
American photographer Charles Freeland. His black and white limited edition
photographs communicate a mood of reflection and meditation in which the
viewer is invited to step for a moment outside this bustling world,
cluttered with noise and ugliness, into a special place, a world of quiet
serenity and timeless beauty.
Although Burma, Thailand and New Mexico are widely
separated culturally and geographically, they still have some things in
common. Charles Freeland shows us how both regions contain places of unique
cultural and historical importance where people, landscapes and architecture
have conjoined to create places of matchless beauty and atmosphere, creating
worlds seemingly set apart from all others. Rather than being
representations of these places, these photographs attempt to communicate -
through a play of light and shadow, color and atmosphere - something of the
healing solace and quiet grace they offer, like a gift to every visitor.
About the Photographer: Charles Freeland is the director
of the Humanities Program at the Mahidol University International College.
Much of his current interest in photography has grown out of the research
and documentation he has done for his classes in the arts of Thailand and
Southeast Asia. The photographs were taken using a Hasselblad medium format
camera. All proceeds from the exhibition will be donated to a charity for
children with AIDS.
The Opening Reception will be presided over by Prof. Dr.
Chariya Brockelman, director of Mahidol University International College on
October 26, 2002 at 6:30 p.m., at the Rotunda Gallery, Neilson Hays Library,
195 Suriwongse Road, Bangkok, Thailand.

Wednesday: 9:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m., Sunday: 9:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
