Obituary
Steve Adams (1954-2001)
Steve Adams, or Sadam as he was sometimes known,
epitomized the notoriety for which Pattaya is frequently heralded in the
popular press of Europe. A hardened hedonist, Steve lived his life on the
fringe never doing in moderation anything that could not be carried out far
more enjoyably if done to excess.
He had a great love for all his fellow human beings but
frequently with a disregard for the civilization they had created. He lived
his life dancing to the tune of a somewhat curious melody that could have
been recorded by Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious sometime back in the late
seventies. As with the Sex Pistols music Steve was brash yet he was also
endearing, being troubled when he discovered his behaviour had caused
offence. He generated a diverse circle of friends and acquaintances, all of
whom have gained much pleasure and amusement reminiscing on the many
outrageous incidents for which Steve was so well known. An icon mounted some
years ago on the wall of the Rising Sun, Soi Yamoto celebrates the man’s
raison d’etre.
No one would find humour in his conduct more than Steve
himself, though however, there was often the impression that he was somewhat
uncomfortable with the extreme persona he had created. From Pattaya through
trips to Hong Kong, time back in Reading and finally Bangkok, he cut a clear
trail that serves as a reminder to others of a difficult path through life
best avoided by the faint hearted.
Stephen Ralph Haldane Adams died from bacterial pneumonia
at Bamrungrad Hospital, Bangkok on Wednesday 30th May aged 47. He was here
for a good time, not for a long time and will be very sadly missed.
