Lewiinski’s & Cafe Ole battle for top spot

PSC Friday Bowling League

Lewiinski’s regained a share of first place by defeating VFW Post 9876 three points to one, while Cafe Ole only managed two points out of four to drop into a tie for first in the Pattaya Sports Club Friday Bowling League.

On 18 July the Pattaya Sports Club celebrated the first completed bowling tournament of the new year. The party, which included awarding nice trophies to the best and luckiest bowlers, was held at the Mia Kai room of the Tropicana Hotel. Everyone (especially the ladies) looked a bit better in their evening clothes than they do at the bowling alley, and it seemed each and everyone enjoyed the party.

The only other team to win three points was Snowman, captained by Jeed with a 484 series, with her teammates Nut and Toy having identical 500 series, definitely the most consistent team bowling of the day.

Nut bowled the best game of the day with a 207 and Kran from Cafe Kronborg had the best series with a 513. It seems that the Pattaya Bowl is getting more difficult to score well every week.

PH3 Run 858

Hares Chicken F. and D.L.H.D. With 120 people signing up, I think Pinky and Fossil had to pay a lot of attention to all those raffle tickets flying away.

A quick bus ride to Siam Country Club Road, near a temple for a beautiful A-site (looked familiar again). The GM this week was Blowfly and when called the circle, the usual new shoes were christened and the Hares brought On In to explain the run, then here we go... On paper the usual FRBs; Tampax had a little bit of competition from that guy from the Philippines Forest Gump. I remember giving him this name on my holiday in the Philippines when he kept on running looking for his lost girlfriend. The run was great, beautiful site-seeing, a little bit of road, a little bit of dessert storm ground, nothing to talk about. Only who put those fake cattle in that wood, or were they real, none of them even moved?

Back On In, ready for some good tuna sandwiches that we can buy from our good friend Jeep and his lovely wife, all the profits go to education for children - well done guys.

The GM called the circle and Ewok started off with the raffle tickets, the Chang Mai Hash Mistress Snowflake gave many beautiful prizes.

Hares On In, Chicken F. and D.L.H.D., everybody said that it was a good run, so they didn’t suffer long on the ice. Then Boy George and Spaghetti Head on the ice, something to do with next week’s run somewhere at the beach. Needle Dick on the ice for signing up too late again! Snowflake was asked in the circle to show us how to use our new drinking tool, “The Willy”. We had one for the cracks and a double one for the real man (Sir Airhead?) We never saw Ferry Dicking Sort Of Poofter give the beers so fast; some said he worked in the camps for Hitler?

Returners On In, ice for ET for forgetting his Hash S@#t gear. Some visitors from Angeles called in for their Down Downs. Time for the Bad RA: Hares On In, good run no punishment this week, then all the Hash S@#s on the ice, Fini F., C.face and Needle Dick. C.face lost his hat to Needle Dick who was very happy with it? Sorry Jerry!

Rambo WW2 and his buddy Bony Ass were iced because their misses needed Hash names: Rambowling and Butterfly. Snowflake On In to show that she as Hash Mistress can down down a double Willy, well done! Needle Dick and Spunk Bubble were next to show how it worked. Spunk Bubble had a double one, because he made his lovely wife pregnant without asking permission from the Hash Mismanagement. Back to the GM for some anniversaries: Misses Head for 50th Run Mug, Spaghetti Head back on the ice for interrupting the GM, C.face and Benny The Nerd for having 100th Runs.

Some leavers: Caroline (Made In Taiwan’s misses, I’ve heard he stays 2 more weeks, isn’t he lucky?), Snowflake back to Chang Mai, 3 lying leavers on the ice, D.L.H.D., C. and Drippy of course for a double Willy, ha ha. A lot of virgins and their sponsors on in for their down downs. The Hares did their familiar song from Bob Dylan “It ain’t me Babe”. Well done Hares!

The Hash Hymn and back to the Happy Hour, which was in my place. I hope you all enjoyed the food and the ambiance.

See ya next week, Flying Frog

Yorkie takes command of Mickey Mouse

It took 5 weeks, but finally a team has edged out into the lead in the Mickey Mouse Darts League. Yorkie finally broke the tie and now sits alone atop the standings.

In week 5 action, despite scoring a week-high 9 under 10s, Yorkie managed to win the match and the beer over Devonshire. Pleasure Dome jumped into a tie for second by winning match and beer over Cheers. Rising Sun is also now tied with Cheers and the Dome for second after winning the match but losing the beer to Beer Put. Mick’s Place kept Palmer’s in check by sweeping the match and the beer.

Ian from Yorkie maintains the league’s highest out to date, 138.

This week (Aug 25) sees Mick’s Place v Devonshire, Pleasure Dome v Palmer’s, Rising Sun v Cheers, and Beer Put v Yorkie. Note: until further notice, Beer Put will play their home matches at the Ding Dong Bar on Soi 17.

Fitness Tips: Check out antioxidants

by David Garred
Club Manager Dusit Resort Sports Club

G’day Pattaya,

New Antioxidant Report: It is widely agreed that dietary antioxidants have an important role to play in preventing cell damage from exposure to oxidants, but more is not necessarily better, according to a new study from the US Institute of Medicine. The study found that there is insufficient evidence that taking megadoses of dietary antioxidants, such as selenium and vitamins C and E or carotenoids including beta-carotene can prevent chronic diseases. Extremely large doses are actually thought to lead to health problems, and for the first time, the report sets a ceiling on daily consumption of these antioxidants.

Members of Dusit Resort Sports Club wishing Cindy Turner a very happy 21st birthday

Here are some of the report recommendations:

Vitamin C: Recommended daily intake (RDI) of 75 milligrams for females and 90 for males. Because smokers are more likely to suffer from biological processes that damage cells and deplete vitamin C, they need an additional 35 milligrams a day. Food sources of the nutrient include citrus fruits, potatoes, strawberries, broccoli and leafy green vegetables.

Upper limit: 2,000 milligrams. Intakes above this may cause diarrhea.

Vitamin E: RDI of 15 milligrams from food. This is equivalent to 22 International Units (IU) of natural source vitamin E or 33 IUS of the synthetic form. Food sources include vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, liver and leafy green vegetables.

Upper limit: 1,500 IU of d-alpha-tocopherol, sometimes labeled as ‘natural source’ vitamin E. Intakes above this increase the risk of hemorrhagic damage.

Selenium: RDI of 55 micrograms. Food sources include seafood, liver, meat and grains.

Upper limit: 400 micrograms per day. Intakes above this could cause seleniosis, a toxin reaction marked by hair loss.

Beta-carotene and other carotenoids: In laboratory testing these nutrients have been shown to act as antioxidants, but the results have not been consistently duplicated in humans. For this reason the report does not recommend a daily intake level or an upper intake level. Instead it recommends that beta carotene supplementation should only be used for the prevention and control of vitamin A deficiency.

Interesting little thing this, will our supermarkets be helping us to buy the right things from them in the future?

Check Out your Health: The supermarket checkout could soon become an arena for monitoring your fat and calorie intake. The UK Department of Health and Medical Research is working with the British supermarket chain Tesco to introduce shopping dockets that contain fat content and calorie information of the products being purchased. As well as providing the consumer with valuable dietary information, the shopping docket could also be a useful tool for professionals in the health and fitness industry (might make my job easier); in theory it can do so for both personal trainers and nutritionists to help consult and educate clients in eating habits to a higher level. This then lasts a shopping lifetime, in theory.

I have a tip from Australia that it may be quite some time before such a thing will be common place, as no supermarket chain has plans to implement the system.

Thailand, well, your guess may well be better than mine.

It is a nice idea, though.

Carpe’ Diem

Pattaya C.C. proves no challenge for Fortt & Riley

PSC TAGGS... golf from The Haven

Wednesday, August 16 - Pattaya Country Club (Better Ball Medal)

1st: Keith Fortt & Harry Riley, 58 net
2nd: Brian Bradley & Bill Chadwick, 64 net
3rd: Malcolm Clare & Jimmy Little, 66 net

Keith Fortt and Harry Riley stomped the field and stomped Pattaya Country Club in a TAGGS Better Ball competition on Wednesday the 16th of August. Keith, playing off 26, and Harry, playing off 21, had eleven net birdies and two net eagles en route to a scorching 58 and their second consecutive Better Ball trophy out of The Haven.

The lone blemish came on the par 5 eighteenth hole where they had their only net bogey of the day. By that time, the competition was long over. This contest was over after the last par three. Their total net score on the four par 3s was six.

Brian Bradley and Bill Chadwick took second place honors with a score of 64 net. They both had solid rounds, with nary a net bogey. The difference between first and second place was again the four par 3s where Brian and Bill took eleven net strokes.

Third place went to Malcolm Clare and Jimmy Little who came in with a six under par 66 net.

Friday, August 18 - Natural Park Hill (Bogey)

1st: Russell Finch, 1 Down C/B
2nd: Jimmy Little, 1 Down
3rd: Claes Ernlund, 2 Down C/B
4th: Dave Ball, 2 Down

Playing in a Bogey competition at Natural Park Hill, things were not going so well for Russell Finch. After being “all square” at the turn, “Pin High” was three down with three to go. Russell finished with three consecutive pars, winning the last two holes to bring his match to down one. That was the margin he need for his first TAGGS win in 2000, taking the Knotted Putter trophy in a count back.

Second place went to the man with the largest golf shirt collection in Pattaya. Jimmy Little, the proverbial “bridesmaid” added one more Fobe original to his wardrobe. Claes Ernlund beat out Dave Ball in a count back for third place finishing at two down.

Bruce bashes Soi Dao and Rick nicks the Medal

The recent three day tour of Soi Dao saw 16 golfers setting out on day one braving the rain all day but enjoying the challenge. There were many new faces who had never played the course before who wondered what had hit them in the rain, but not Steve Donovan who scored an excellent 38 pts. John Kendall and Clive Bruce were second and third, both on 36 pts.

Day two saw better weather, and it was Steve Mascari who triumphed with 41 pts. Clive Bruce came second with 39 pts. and Jay Quick third with 35 pts.

The final day was tense with many players still in with a chance. Ray Ryan came in first with 37 pts., Rick Sharp second with 36 pts. and John Kendall nicking third on a count back with 35 pts. Rick Sharp counting the cost of that 1 pt. beating, doing him out of a century from Arthur Negus, so the final placings were: overall winner with 110 pts. Clive Bruce, second with 103 pts. John Kendall, and third Steve Donovan 101 pts. Joint fourth with 100 pts. were the favourites Steve Mascari and Mike Morris.

On Sunday the 13th of August Lewiinski’s / Orchid had the third monthly medal at Noble Place. With one or two novices in the field it was pretty slow going and there were a few golfers a little bit irate, so as normal the starter took the brunt of the blame. However, it didn’t detract from some good golf played from those lucky enough to sidestep the snarl up. Rick Sharp won the day with net 72 on a count back from Steve Mascari, also net 72. Mike Morris finished third with net 73. The two near pins went to Jack Grinvold; well done Jack.

Other results:

Monday 14th August - Green Valley C.C. (Stroke)

1st: Alvin Crowder, net 61
2nd: Terry Summers, net 71
3rd: Steve Donovan, net 71

Near pins: #7 Larry Nicholas and #15 Steve Donovan

Weds 16th August - N.P. Hills (Stableford)

1st: Steve Ross, 38 pts.
2nd: Phil Sharpe, 36pts.
3rd: Clive Bruce, 36 pts.

Friday 18th August - N.P. Resort (2 man BB)

Winners: Steve Mascari & Baruche, net 61
Runners up: Svein Vistung & Morton Esseth, net 73
