PAWS does make a difference

PAWS - Pattaya Animal Welfare Society’s free injection clinic sponsored by three Naklua vets Dr. Nop, Dr. Sukit and Dr. Goong, Mike’s Shopping Mall, the Pattaya Mail, the Pattaya Mail Channel cameraman Gary Bruton and the World Dog Centre was a runaway success with over one hundred animals of all shapes and sizes being given free rabies shots, seven being spayed on site and nine thousand baht being raised towards animal care. This money goes towards other funds being raised for further PAWS injection and sterilization programs. These clinics will be held in the 38 local wats (temples) regularly on a rotating basis in conjunction with the Pattaya and Chonburi city councils and the local abbots.

While PAWS is still desperately trying to raise money to build an animal shelter and has a low rent (Bt5,000 a month) premises at Naklua, Paws does not yet have the estimated 960 thousand baht annual budget. This sounds like a huge amount when you spell it out and count all the zeros; nearly a million baht made up of 80,000 baht per month running expenses for a year, all inclusive of Thai salaried vets and vet assistants, rent, food, rates, light, water, electricity, maintenance and vet medicines. Though when you think about it is not so much to clean up Pattaya.

This would build a foster home / shelter for ill and injured animals. We can all pull together and help PAWS help our animals. We could all sponsor a month, or just give what we can. Nothing is too small.

PAWS is a non-profit organization with the aim of making a positive difference. We are not just sitting back and doing nothing because we have no money. Money or not PAWS is out in the community making a difference. Help us to help by donating dollars or goods or time. Become a member; membership is 200 baht. Corporate sponsorship is 1,000 baht and upwards. PAWS has incentive discount cards in the pipeline for members and sponsors.

What are you good at? PAWS and Pattaya’s animals are needy. You have seen them. They need just everything from food to bedding to computers to caring people to volunteer as part time animal carers and volunteer vet assistants at the shelter when it is a goer.

PAWS (which is a club for helping animals and in the process of becoming a registered charity) main aim is to help reduce Pattaya’s pitiful animal problem and make it a better place for us two legged and four legged animals to live and tourists to visit.

Jester’s Charity Bike Ride

It’s getting close to the annual Jesters Fountain of Life Sponsored Bike Ride. For those of you who don’t know what this is, it’s something the Harley Club started doing three years ago as part of the charity drive for an underprivileged kids school in Pattaya. Last year we had 50 people cycle from Ban Change to Pattaya, which raised about 350,000 baht.

This year we’re starting and finishing at the Amari with two routes, both around Maprachon Reservoir. One will be a 25k, and the other a 50k ride, so all of you should be fit for the 50k route. No hills (promise!). The date’s set for Saturday September 16th and the ride starts at 08.00, probably finishing by 11.00. This then leads into the Fair at the Amari which last year was attended by 4000 people and has bands, beer tents, food stalls, tug of war competitions, etc., and is a good afternoon out. Registration fee for the ride is B500 which includes a breakfast of sorts at the Amari and cold drinks on the way. This is waived for anyone raising over B5000 in sponsorship. There’s also a prize for the person raising the most money. In addition, the person who guesses the nearest to the winning time on the 50k ride will win B10,000.

So come on then, who’s up to it? Excuses like “no bike” are not allowed as one can probably be found for you.

Musical Concert at Garden International School

Ashley (Year 9) performed “Chicago Blues” as part of Garden International School’s end of the year concert. The music department, conducted by Ms. McIntyre, played a variety of pieces for the whole school. Students from Year 9-13 joined forces to compose and perform, amongst others, a drum piece called “Garden International Drummers” and Years 4 & 5 sang Jonah Man Jazz. The effort and the long practices paid off and the audience enjoyed the concert very much.
