Fitness Tips: Pathways to health ... Cont.

by David Garred,
Club Manager Dusit Resort Sports Club.

Guten Morgan, welcome back to “outside the box”. Yes, as promised this week we will be taking a look at a couple of different approaches to living and feeling healthy.
Last week you should recall that we covered Stress Management and Laughter with respect to their importance in the overall scheme of our lives.
This week we will be taking a look at two completely different things that are equally important to what we are trying to achieve, feeling better every day.
Relationships and Spiritual Health
Spirituality is often confused with religion. Religion represents dogma; rules to follow that will help us live richer, more meaningful lives and perhaps offer an explanation as to what happens after life. Spirituality is less definable - it has more to do with the way we interact in the world and how we see ourselves fitting into the bigger picture.
A moment, an interaction, a movie all have the power to touch our spirits in a way that somehow makes us feel richer. Of all the life experiences that have the ability to enrich our health, social relationships seem to pack the most punch.
Some studies show us that loneliness rivals smoking, obesity and high blood pressure as a cause for serious heart problem. Social isolation in the face of emotional trauma, such as the loss of a loved one, increases the risk of sudden fatal heart attack.
On the other hand, the emotional nurturing offered by friends and relatives can help us improve our psychological and physical health. Studies even show longer life spans for people with strong personal networks.
The challenge for most people is not to go out and find friends, but rather to make time in their already overburdened schedules to develop and enjoy their existing relationships.
Not to be outdone, your relationship with your pet offers up many of the same health benefits as a loving spouse by providing unconditional affection and acceptance - traits that are sometimes difficult to find in humans.
Employment / Guilt Free Living
Feeling guilty about your lifestyle habits, while it may not kill you, may actually prevent you from taking the actions that will enhance your health.
According to an American Dietetic Association poll, almost half the women in the United States feel guilty about eating the foods that they like. This survey also revealed that many women (and men) feel guilty if they believe they have eaten too much, eaten at the “wrong” time of day, eaten without weighing in the health consequences or eaten what they are in the mood for.
People also carry guilt for not exercising and for not making time for friends, relaxation and themselves.
Glowing health, however, comes with self acceptance. It comes from an unshakeable confidence in your own ability to make educated choices that will lead to better health.
So the next time you catch yourself being too structured or feeling guilty about your exercise programme or eating habits, try taking stock for a moment. Ask yourself what are you doing to yourself, try hugging a dog, rent a funny movie or watch one of these fabulous sunsets that we have been having lately. It’s the kind of medicine that is so powerful that it cannot be contained in a bottle.
You will never know unless you give it a try.
Have a good week and take care of yourself, if you can’t then get some help, maybe you will be surprised who can and is willing.
Seize the day.
