United strike late to sink Bangkok

Pattaya United are shown in action against
Bangkok FC at the Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya, Sunday, August 10.
(Photo/Pattaya United FC)
Pattaya United left it late for a come from behind win over fourth placed
Bangkok FC at the Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya last Sunday, August 10.
United fell behind in this Division 1 encounter in the 54th minute to a
penalty by Bangkok’s Brazilian forward Valci Junior but the Dolphins hit
back 15 minutes later with a penalty of their own, converted by Leo Roberto.
The home team had to wait until deep into injury time to grab the winner,
which came courtesy of a 93rd minute strike by second half substitute
Patipat Armatantri.
United’s next league fixture is this coming Sunday, August 17, away at
struggling Khon Kaen FC. Kick-off is at 6 p.m.

Coco Club hosts national
bowls team qualifiers

Thailand’s top bowls players
relax after a long day.
Last Saturday, August 9, saw the Kingdom’s top lawn bowls
players descend on the Coco Club just outside Pattaya to take part in the
playoff trials for the Thailand national team selection for the upcoming
Asian Games, to be held later this year.
An entry field saw 6 men and 6 ladies take part but only 5 of each were
required so it was a long, tough day of extremely good class bowls.
Endurance also played a part with some players suffering from foot and hand
cramps - in lawn bowls!
The day started at 9 a.m. with the draw and was followed by 30 matches, with
the winner of each being the first to reach 12 points. The shortest game
turned out to be 8 ends and the longest 18 ends with a total of 358 ends of
bowls at an average of 12 ends per match. By 6 p.m. everyone knew they had
had a few games, many of which went down to the wire. In the end it turned
out the 5 men from Bangkok took the men’s places on the team and the 5
ladies - all of whom are members at Coco Club - took the ladies’ spots.
All the games were supervised by international referees from Australia,
England and Scotland. We wish them well and further training starts very
soon.

Gardner gets the gold at Green Valley
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

(L to R) Lindsay Phillips,
Alan Bissell and Bruce Gardner.
Monday, August 4, Green Valley –
Stableford
As we teed off today the weather looked very threatening but all
six groups went out bang on schedule. Playing off 19, Bruce Gardner came in
with 39 points to win division 2 ahead of Bob Poole in second on 37 and in
third place was Iain Walsh with 33.
Slightly lower scores in division 1 with the cut at 9-17. Don Head took top
spot after beating Chris Voller 14/13 on a back six count back after they
both returned scores of 34 points. Terry Madsen came in third on 32 points.
Chris Voller claimed three near pins in division 1 while Bruce Gardner,
Curtis Hessler and Bob Poole were all winners in division 2.
Curtis Hessler birdied the 8th and Bob Poole the 12th to share the ‘2’s pot
and in division 2 and Chris Voller got the only ‘2’ in division 1.
Back at the presentation at Siam Cats there was a warm welcome return to
Bruce Gardner, Chris Reed, Bob Poole, Miss Nut and Don Head.
Wednesday, August 6, Burapha – Stableford
There was a large Singha competition being played here today on
the A and B courses so obviously we were allocated the C and D nines.
We teed off 30 minutes ahead of schedule on a course that was in excellent
condition and the weather conditions were also perfect. This did not reflect
in the scores however as Robert Garrick, playing off 17, was able to win
division 1 with just 32 points ahead of Lindsay Phillips and Tony Bless on
31 points, with Lindsay taking the count back verdict 11/10 on the back six.
Jimmy Johnson’s 30 points was enough to win division 2, with Rod Howett in
second two points behind and an unheard of 26 points coming in for third
place for Alan Bissell.
Near pins went to Lindsay Phillips, Harry Vincenzi, Chris Voller, Paul
Hartley and Rodney Howett.
Chris Voller birdied C8 for the only ‘2’ of the day.
Friday, August 8, Eastern Star – Stableford
This course is still improving each week and today there was a
perfect cool breeze coming off the coast making it an enjoyable round for
everybody. There were seven groups out with the cut in the two divisions at
9-16 and 17+ and the best score returned came in division 1, with Bill
Bertram winning with 38 points. Back in form after a few months in the
doldrums and now playing off 10, Mikael Andersson took second on 37 points
and Karl Flood was third with a meager 36.
Thirty seven points was enough to win division 2 for Joe Kubon while Colin
Aspinall came in second one point behind and Frank Kelly was third with 35.
There were some tough tee placements on the par threes today and a strong
breeze which meant that only one person managed a near pin in division 1,
that being Tony Bless on the 6th, while in division 2 Colin Aspinall, Gary
Harrison and Bryan Rought (2) shared the pot.
Colin Aspinall birdied the 17th, Robert Garrick the 6th and Bryan Rought the
17th to share the second division ‘2’s pot while there was a rollover in the
top flight.

The Outback golfers gather for
a group photo following the Barry Chadbourn memorial tournament.
Monday, August 4, Burapha - Stableford
20 players here at Burapha this week on the C & D nines but only
eighteen of them played in the comp as Mike and Peter did not have
handicaps, not that they let that prevent them from enjoying their day.
Two others who would have enjoyed their day were Tim Knight and Keith Dyson
who scored 43 and 41 points respectively to fill the top two places in Div
B, well clear of the third placed man, Ken Young on 32.
Tim
& Alfie with Wednesday’s NAGA prize – an awful bowl of plastic fruit all the

Div A went to Jim Brackett on 38pts followed home by John Low (36), who beat
Bob Finley on count back.
There were two ‘2’s, both on D2 from Russell Hall and Dennis Pelly

Wednesday, August 6, Laem Chabang - Stableford
With a major event at Pattaya Country Club today, three groups
played the A & B nines at the lovely Laem Chabang course, which continues to
offer great value for money with its reduced green fee during renovations to
the clubhouse facilities.
Welcome to Thierry Temime, Jim Dundon and Steve Wood and welcome back also
to Mike Omiya.
Kiwi John, who has been in fine form during his annual tour here in
Thailand, showed no let up as he won the day with 41pts from travelling
companion, Geoff Christie with 37. Thierry took third beating Jim Dundon on
count back, both on 32.
There were two ‘2’s from John Low (A2) and Thierry Temime (B5)

Wednesday, August 6, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
It was just a year ago (4th August) that Barry Chadbourn aka
‘Chad’ lost his final battle and passed away just four days short of his
71st birthday. Chad was a long standing Outbacker and a member of Pattaya
Country Club where he play golf three days a week for the last few years. He
was well known by the clubhouse staff and many of the caddies, particularly
Wan who was his regular caddy for over four years.
So it was fitting that some 40 of his friends (including one caddy) played
today in his memory at Pattaya Country Club. John Lawton – who had been
friends with Chad for over 15 years – and General Jack, ably assisted by
Pottsy decided that today would be a ‘fun’ day – to which Trudy Chadbourn
agreed that is what Chad would have wanted. So it was!
The format was a 2-person scramble (Ambrose for the Aussies!) with placing
through the green and drop in hazards, and four near pins donated by Outback
Many began the day with breakfast at the Outback with Trudy and then it was
off to PCC where we received the usual warm welcome from the staff and of
course the caddies.
On to the first tee where Trudy and Chad’s caddy Wan dispensed beer and
rolls kindly donated by Trudy, John, Suzy, Jack and others, to all. After
the last group had teed off they continued round the course much to the
appreciation of all.
It was then back to the bar for a few drinks and the results with the
winning pair being John Aylott and Vic Warren, who both play PCC regularly
which proved an advantage today as they came in with fine 63.5! Second were
Wayne & Eng Cotterell (63.75) and third, Rosco and Graham Woollett (65).
There was a very special NAGA prize for the pair who came last.
Nigel went on to thank the day’s organisers, particularly Suzy and Tim on
behalf of the players and then called for all to raise a glass to ‘Absent
Friends’. At the end of the day we all had a good time in memory of our good
friend Chad – gone but not forgotten.
1st John Aylott & Vic Warren (8.5) 63.5
2nd Wayne Cotterell & Eng Cotterell (8.25) 63.75
3rd Rosco & Graham Woollett (8) 65
4th Steve Durey & Nial Glover (7.75) 68.25
5th Kerry Beck & Sugar Ray Handford (8.25) 68.75
6th Jack Moseley & Bob Mattes (10.75) 69.25
Friday, August 8, Green Valley - Medal
An excellent turnout of 38 for the August monthly medal played at
the usual Friday venue, Green Valley, in very pleasant and cool conditions
for a change. For some reason or other, the course played three shots
tougher than last week, when the CSR was 69, this week being at level par,
72.
We were joined today by visitors John Leonard and Beau Mete, both of whom
featured on the podium, sharing sixth place with 73. Paul Greenaway, who is
recovering from a damaged knee and was unusually seen in a cart, proved that
he is not too far away from being fit again as he scored a gross 79 (71 net)
to share third place with John Fitzgerald and Bruce McAdam.
Jim Brackett, who was scheduled to go out in group three, nearly didn’t get
here at all as his good friend, driver and playing companion managed to get
lost on the way to the course; not bad for someone who has been playing here
for as far back as I can remember. Nevertheless, none of that phased Jim, as
he went on to take the Low Gross Medal with 77, beating Rick Evans by one,
and with taking second place overall with a net 69.
Dennis Pelly recorded the best round of the day, a net 67 playing off 12 and
will surely see his handicap start to come down, with his current vein of
form.
There five ‘2’s from Greg Hill (3rd), Dennis Pelly (5th), Paul Greenaway
(12th) and Rick Evans & Ken Hole (16th).
1st Dennis Pelly (12) net 67
2nd Jim Brackett (8) net 69
3rd John Fitzgerald (19) net 71
3rd Paul Greenaway (8) net 71
3rd Bruce McAdam (27) net 71

Nyborg wins the honours in Hua Hin
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Monday, August 4, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
We had just a small turnout of golfers today with the majority of
the regulars saving their energy for the annual trip to Hua Hin, departing
the following day. It was however, a good opportunity for the non-travellers
to get some early points in the Golfer of the Month competition, with most
of the usual suspects being absent.
Thomas
Nyborg, winner of the 4-day tournament in Hua Hin.
Our two groups were allowed to tee off a few minutes early behind another
local society, and although the pace of play was slow over the first few
holes, it did pick up, and the round was completed in reasonable time.
This was the third time we’ve played here in recent months and the course is
improving (although some would say it has a way to go) and the construction
of the impressive looking new clubhouse is progressing steadily.
We were welcoming back Dave Keats and Les Burns, but it was Geoff Hart, who
was only playing in his fourth game back after a lengthy absence, who took
the honours on the day with 34 points. Tony Robbins took second place on a
count back ahead of PJ Redmond on 32 points, and Tony also took three of the
near pin prizes (Peter Habgood could be seen anxiously looking back at the
green to see if his near pin held up on the hole that eluded Tony).
1st Geoff Hart (23) 34pts
2nd Tony Robbins (13) 32pts
3rd P.J. Redmond (28) 32pts
Near Pins: Peter Habgood and Tony Robbins (3).
Tuesday, August 5 - Palm Hills Resort - Stableford
Our group of 12 golfers departed from Pattaya at 8 a.m. on
Tuesday, and our first game was scheduled to tee off at 1 p.m. on the Palm
Hills Resort and Golf Course which is located about 15km before Hua Hin
town.
Unfortunately one of the vehicles (whose driver shall remain nameless, but
he insists that he was accompanied by three truly incompetent navigators)
took a wrong turn and ended up touring the sites of Bangkok, eventually
arriving at the course some two hours later than the rest. Fortunately the
course was extremely quiet so all the golfers managed to get away, although
the final “lost” group were finishing just as the light began to fade.
The course has a good layout with generous fairways, but the greens are
contoured and extremely grainy, thus the consensus of opinion after playing
our first round here was that there are much better courses to play in the
Hua Hin area.
The winner on the day was Thomas Nyborg with 35 points beating Mashi Kaneta
on a count back, with Rab McDonald a point behind taking third place.
Wednesday, August 6, Springfield Royal C.C. - Stableford
The second day of the tournament saw us visiting the Jack
Nicklaus designed course at the Springfield Royal Country Club where we were
allocated to play the Mountain and Lake nines. We elected to play from the
blue tees, which at 6,700 yards provides a very stern test, particularly
when playing in a strong breeze as was the case today. The rough here is
‘fluffy’ which means that the ball sits down very low, and any players
unfortunate enough to stray from the fairways, found it extremely difficult
to recover.
Generally the course was in good condition with the greens running true, and
it genuinely provides a true test of golf, but not surprisingly the scores
on the day could be described as moderate at best. Colin Greig was the only
golfer to play to his handicap and took first place five points clear of
Tony Robbins, with Thomas Nyborg a further point behind in third place.
Thursday, August 7, Black Mountain - Medal
The third round of the tournament was designated as a medal
competition on the championship course at Black Mountain Golf Club. The
fairways and greens were in excellent condition, but as always this is the
time of the year when the course carries out major maintenance work, so
there were large areas of GUR on the approaches to several greens, and the
10th hole resembled a major construction site being in the process of being
redesigned to include new waterfalls and water hazards.
The weather was overcast but pleasant and it’s always a pleasure to play
this excellent course which was appreciated by everyone, but none more so
than Colin Greig who proceeded to take it apart for the second year running.
Colin came back to the clubhouse with a superb score of net 67 (74 gross)
but was closely followed by Tony Robbins and Thomas Nyborg, both with net
69, with Tony taking second place on the countback.
Friday, August 8, Imperial Lake View - Stableford
The final day of the four day tournament was held at the Imperial
Lake View Resort, with Thomas Nyborg leading the way, holding a six point
cushion ahead of the leading contenders who all played together in the final
group.
The course was deserted and the leading three-ball (Mike Grasser having
dropped out of the competition with a Tiger Woods type back injury) soon
disappeared into the distance, eventually coming back into the clubhouse in
just under 3 hours.
As the leading group were heading to the locker room a heavy shower of rain
descended on the course, leaving our title contenders struggling with some
difficult conditions over the closing holes. At least that was their excuse,
because none of them performed to their true ability on the day, although
Tony Robbins finished in fifth place which was enough to get him within one
point of the overall winner Thomas Nyborg (who finished in 10th place!).
Gerry Cooney took the honours on the day with 33 points, one point ahead of
a four-way tie on 32 points, with Geoff Parker taking second place ahead of
Geoff Cox on the count back.
Overall 4 Day Results
1st Thomas Nyborg (21) 36pts
2nd Tony Robbins (13) 35pts
3rd Colin Greig (7) 31pts
Our usual Near Pin competition was held each day and Lee Butler emerged as
the “King of the Pins” taking 8 out of the 16 prizes available over the four
days.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play
out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and
almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play on Mondays, Wednesdays, and
Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive golf
competition why not come and join us. We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for
breakfast and transportation, and new players are always welcome.

Bangpra – a genuine test
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the Elephant Bar

Murray Edwards, David Thomas
and Masashi Iizumi.
1st Paul Hird (14) 38pts
2nd David Thomas (9) 32pts
3rd Robbie Taylor (12) 31pts
Monday 4 August saw the Pattaya Golf Society take four groups to one of our
favourite courses – Bangpra – for a stableford competition. The weather,
humid and overcast, made for good conditions. This was supported by decent
fairways that did offer run, bunkers that were eminently playable and greens
that ran fast and true. So, it was somewhat surprising to see only one
player manage to break net-par.
The group welcomed Joe Miller, from Atlanta, Georgia, and welcomed back Evan
Millar and Wan Meeraka after an absence of a few months.
Mr Len, whose name was on the sign-up sheet until Sunday evening, had to
withdraw due to swelling in both feet, an act that saw him awarded his own
booby bevy by golf organiser for the day, David Thomas.
No one was more surprised than Robbie Taylor and David Thomas when finding
out their modest scores of 31 and 32 made the podium. The deserving winner
of the day, with an excellent 2-under net par, was visiting Englishman, Paul
Hird.
Bangpra, always a good yet fair test of golf, was again very good value at
1150 baht green-fee, caddie-fee. In addition, one rarely has a bad caddie at
this course. In fact the whole Bangpra experience suggests this place is
under very effective management. Long may it continue!
Khao Kheow – wet but eminently playable
1st Paul Hird (14) 42pts
2nd Jon Batty (10) 39pts
3rd David Thomas (9) 35pts
The Pattaya Golf Society took four groups up the short drive to the fabulous
Khao Kheow Country Club on Wednesday 6 August. Fabulous because it’s one of
the best tests that Pattaya has to offer, and at 1150 baht green-fee
caddie-fee it certainly represents VFM.
Despite the significant rain KK has received recently, the fairways, bunkers
and greens were well presented. This course has great powers of recovery,
due to its drainage ability. Walk just five yards off the tee-box and you
will be tip-toeing through wet and slushy ground. But once you reach the
fairway, the wetness is nowhere to be seen, leaving the golfer with a lovely
lie on fluffy but close-cropped grass. The whole experience – playing on a
rain-effected golf course that still gives the golfer a fair crack – is a
tribute to green-keeping staff.
Today’s round saw two standout performances. On a track that gave little
run, on a day where the wind played its part, two Englishman, Paul Hird and
Jon Batty, outperformed the field. But before we go there, we need to
acknowledge a superb ‘2’ on B3. Playing into a strong breeze, Masashi Iizumi
stroked a hybrid all of 170 yards to pin-high, and then proceeded to sink
the putt for the only ‘2’ of the day.
Back at the Elephant Bar, the presentation made the point that the Rules of
Golf can be used as a friend, not a foe. The case in point illustrated by
the KK card, which states in its local rules that embedded balls – through
the green – are subject to a free drop. Another Rule stipulates seven sandy
areas as “waste bunkers” that are neither bunkers nor hazards, giving the
golfer the right to address the ball, as well as take a free drop in the
event their ball is embedded.
The PGS said farewell to Paul Hird, who departs for the UK on Friday. There
are some in the field who may not regret his leaving, such has been the
quality of his golf this trip. Well played Paul!
Greenwood –
Playing Tough
T1st Akifume Tate (14) 32pts
T1st Jesper Hansen (16) 32pts
T1st Masashi Iizumi (21) 32pts
Friday 8 August saw the Pattaya Golf Society take three groups up the 331 to
play a stableford competition at Greenwood. With a near-empty car-park, it
appeared we had the course pretty much to ourselves, an assumption that soon
proved correct. Allocated the C and A nines, the first group got under way
on time.
The northern courses that make up our regular rota all appeared to have
received a lot of rain lately, including Greenwood. Whilst the fairways
offered good lies, there were many wet areas where pooling occurs.
Fortunately the maintenance programme at this course is better than most, a
fact evidenced by the standard of presentation. The only areas to suffer are
the twenty-odd yards immediately in front of the greens; many are sodden.
The day stayed dry with most golfers appreciating the breezy conditions.
Notwithstanding the good weather, scoring was modest, with no player getting
to within three of net-par. Leading the group out was a three-ball
containing two Japanese and a Dane. It was the battle between these three
that would determine the day’s winner. In the end, they couldn’t be
separated with each managing a total of 32 points, thus sharing first place.
Back at the Elephant Bar in Soi Buakhao, the presentation welcomed new
member, David Wang, from Shanghai, China, and said farewell to Aussies Mick
O’Donnell and Bill Tunbridge, who return home to Newcastle, NSW.
Irishman Larry Slattery was the winner of the beer draw, whilst departing
Mick O’Donnell received the day’s booby bevy for the dedicated way in which
he grafted out a score.
It had been another lovely day’s golf at a near-deserted Greenwood Golf
Course. At a green-fee caddie-fee of 1000 baht, it continues to represent
one of the best VFM experiences in Pattaya.

Khao Kheow bares its teeth
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s & Cafe Kronborg

Steve Hamstad & Barry Elphick.
Tuesday, August 5, Khao Kheow – Stableford
It seems weird to me but there are people out there who say they do
not like playing this course. Quite often a couple of our regulars miss the day
and I find myself amazed that people who like to play golf can be so misled to
believe they do not like it.
Well after a lot of thought I believe it comes down to one of a couple of
things: cost, or an inability to play the course. This is a tough layout where
every shot you play counts. Play a bad shot and the course will punish you,
there are no freebie bad shots here. So you are aware that you play well or will
be punished. Some players like to score well every time they play, so no Khao
Kheow. And cost, well it can be a little more than some of the lesser courses.
However, on this day we had a full turnout with golfers who wanted to be tested.
With a full group at Bert’s it was into transport and away we went. A good drive
down there saw us booked in and on the first tee a little early, and then with
the test set for the day as the B & C Nines away we went.

Ted Morris (left) celebrates with
Mark West and Andre Van Dyk.
The course was a little damp and carts were not allowed on
the fairways, but what did I care as this day I hit very few. However, it was
soon obvious that the ball was not going to roll very far and was going to pick
up mud. With a strong wind also some of the longer holes were going to be a
problem, so Khao Kheow on this day really showed its fangs. However, the
fairways were well grassed and the greens were in good condition.
Back at Bert’s it was time for the results and the winner in the A Flight, 0 to
17, was Steve Hamstad with 34 points ahead of Alan Sullivan in second with 33,
and David Hutchinson in third with 32.
In the B Flight the winner was Barry Elphick with 33 points ahead of Daryl Evans
in second on 32 and a count back on 31 points saw Brad Robins take third ahead
of George Bailey.
Near Pins: Tom Herrington, Don Carmody, David Hutchinson, Alan Sullivan
Friday, August 8, Pattavia – Stableford
Another Friday and another golf course waited to test each golfer.
Once again Tropical Bert’s combined with Cafe Kronborg, and once again the
results were successful. Some new friends were made and old friendships
rediscovered. Other golf groups should take note, and cooperation of this sort
can benefit everyone.
The golf course deserves special mention. Pattavia was formerly called Century
Chonburi and is often referred to by that name by long time residents. However,
the course and clubhouse are so improved that it’s time to let the old name die.
No one is sure what “Pattavia” means, but right now it means a fine course at
good value, beautiful fairways, very difficult but true greens, and of course a
new clubhouse. Many wonder if the almost off-road drive to get there is worth
it. It is.
Back in the clubhouse everyone commented how the tricky greens made approach
shots key to good scores. Find yourself uphill and you might be chipping back on
the next shot. However Ted Morris (13) didn’t have much trouble, taking first
place with a fine 36 points. New PSC Golf Chairman Mark West (13) returning from
the Disabled List after two months showed he still has game by claiming second
place with 35 points. Welcome back Mark! Andre Van Dyk (15) was third with 34
points, followed by Tom Herrington (14) with 34 and Brian Parish (12) with 32.
Special thanks to Dick Warberg and Dave Richardson for organizing this day.
Near Pins: Daryl Evans, Don Carmody, Brian Parish.

Bridesmaid revisited
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Derek Thorogood in his bridesmaid’s gown.
Andy Rich
Monday, August 4, Plutaluang - Stableford
It’s exactly 100 years since the start of the First World War for the
Brits. Life was never quite the same again as the lamps went out all over Europe
and many thousands of people would never see them lit again. So on Monday
morning it was perhaps a moment to pause for thought and reflect for a while on
how different things might have been for so many poor souls and their families.
A sobering thought indeed.
Daryl
Ottaway - winner at Emerald
Step forward 100 years and the patrons of the TRGG had nothing further going
through their minds than the battle about to take place at the Navy Golf Course
at Plutaluang (East and South courses). Now last week in my report I spoke about
Derek Thorogood complaining that he always seemed to end up as the bridesmaid,
always getting pipped at the post for first place. Well this week he could be
seen to have a point as he finished second twice and third once. When I caught
up with him crying in his beer and asked him for his thoughts he asked me to go
forth and I didn’t quite catch the end of his sentence. So I complemented him on
his dress (see photo) and left.
Top of the leaderboard at Plutaluang was Charlie Cox who continued his good form
of late and finished on 38 points, just beating Derek Thorogood who finished
with the same score, on count back. Our marathon man Richard Talbot took third
spot with a very commendable 35 points after his recent handicap cut.
1st Charlie Cox (17) 38pts
2nd Derek Thorogood (15) 38pts
3rd Richard Talbot (16) 35pts
Wednesday, August 6, The Emerald - Stableford
On Wednesday it was off to a fairly damp Emerald where they had had
quite a downpour the previous evening. It did not prevent some pretty impressive
winning scores, with my playing partner Roger Wilkinson showing the rest the way
home with a remarkable 39 points. He only just made it to No.1 after a count
back, beating Monday’s winner Charlie Cox into second place.
Now our blushing bridesmaid must have thought this was going to be his day when
he returned with 38 points but our Derek had to be content with third place.
1st Roger Wilkinson (12) 39pts
2nd Charlie Cox (16) 39pts
3rd Derek Thorogood (14) 38pts
Friday, August 8, Eastern Star - Stableford
The week ended for the TRGG on Friday with a trip over to Eastern
Star where Daryl Ottaway rounded off a high scoring week with first place on 38
points. It was tears before bedtime once again for Derek Thorogood who missed
out on top spot for the third time this week. Charlie Cox got a mention in
dispatches, again finishing in the top three for the third time this week. Well
done Charlie and better luck next time Derek.
1st Daryl Ottaway (6) 38pts
2nd Derek Thorogood (14) 34pts
3rd Charlie Cox (15) 33pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like to play a
round of golf with the TRGG please phone Fergus Brennan on 086 056 7019 or pop
into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name to the weekly lists
which are posted on the notice board.

There’s no stopping Phil
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society

Three time winner Phil Davis and partner.
Sunday, August 3, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Dave Hutchinson (0) 41pts
2nd Bob Watson (4) 39pts
3rd Kevin Waycott (8) 36pts
B Flight
1st Phil Davies (19) 41pts
2nd Eddy Beilby (16) 38pts
3rd Nick Shaw (16) 34pts
Near Pins: No 5 Paul V Smith, No 8 Colin Sansom, No 12 Adam Barton, No 16
Connie Walsh
It was scratch player Dave Hutchinson and the red hot Phil Davies vying for
the man of the match today. Dave’s 41 point outburst was two clear of A
Flight mate Aussie ‘leg end’ Bob Watson and yet three more in front of Kevin
Waycott. (It should be noted that Dave’s score was a gross 67 and contained
a 2.)
Phil was followed into the barn by Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby with a rock solid
38 points, this left Nick ‘Elvis’ Shaw to close out the flight with 34
points.
Dave Stockman, Kris K, Connie Walsh and Adam Barton shared the 2’s pot with
Dave Hutchinson.
Tuesday, August 5, Laem Chabang A & C - Stableford
A Flight
1st Paul Bray (6) 39pts
2nd Tom Gorey (14) 36pts
3rd Paul Hird (14) 36pts
B Flight
1st Phil Davies (19) 35pts
2nd Colin Davis (16) 31pts
3rd Nick Shaw (16) 30pts
Aussie star Paul Bray took A Flight and the man of the match honours with a
very impressive 39 points. He was also the only player to better par on the
day at Jack’s fabulous creation Laem Chabang.
The two players who followed Paul up the podium steps needed a count back to
separate them as both posted solid even par rounds. The luck of the Irish
prevailed as Co. Kilkenny man Tom Gory (who learnt all he knows from his pal
Christy Good Knight) picked up the silver and the unlucky Paul Hird was
awarded the bronze.
The man in red hot form, Welshman Phil Davis, added another flight victory
to his already hot winners list as he topped the B Flight with 35 points.
The Donkey, who has been out to pasture recently, showed he might be on the
road to recovery as he took the silver with 31 points. Nick ‘Elvis’ Shaw
rounded out the flight but needed the aid of a count back to render Robin
Mangos pennyless at sea level.
Andre Van Dyke, Michael Healy and Lew Szigligeti shared the 2’s pot.
Wednesday, August 6, Treasure Hills - Stableford
A Flight
1st German Odermatt (12) 36pts
2nd John Pierrel (10) 34pts
3rd Jim Brackett (8) 32pts
B Flight
1st Phil Davies (19) 32pts
2nd Eddy Beilby (16) 30pts
3rd Nick Shaw (16) 30pts
Treasure Hills playing off the white tees is always a good test of golf and
as the scores showed, no one managed to better par on the day. German
Odermatt did manage to play to his handicap to take A Flight and the match
honours though. German was two stokes clear of John Pierrel and a further
two clear of big Jim Brackett.
Incredibly Phil Davis took charge of B Flight for his third win of the week,
clearly a feat of incredible golf. Phil’s 32 points was two clear of a pair
of players, count back specialist Nick ‘Elvis’ Shaw and Eddy ‘the Eagle’
Beilby, but this time Nick came up second best in the count back as the
‘Eagle’ took the silver.
Paul Bray and Peter LeNoury split the 2’s pot.
Tuesday, August 5, Banyan C.C. – Stableford
1st William Peach (16) 41pts
2nd Freddy Starbeck (16) 39pts
3rd Peter Terry (20) 37pts
Wednesday, August 6, Black Mountain - Stableford
1st Freddy Starbeck (16) 39pts
2nd Barry Copestake (13) 35pts
3rd Paul V Smith (8) 32pts
As is evident from above, the lads and lasses had a full competitive
schedule for the two day journey to Hua Hin and fun was had by all, as the
organizer noted.
The first day the venue was Banyan Country Club and the winner was William
Peach with a splendid 41 points. Bill was two clear of Freddy ‘the quite
one’ Starbeck and a further two clear of Peter Terry.
Black Mountain was the final venue and this suited Freddy Star beck down to
the ground as he fired his second 39 points. Barry ‘the Boot’ Copestake took
the silver four shots in arrears and Paul V Smith tided up the flight on 32
points. So it was Freddy Starbeck who was the leading baht collector of the
week as I am sure he let everyone know.
Friday, August 8, Silky Oak – Stableford
A Flight
1st Kris Kristanjootha (8) 39pts
2nd John Pierrel (10) 39pts
3rd Nick Shaw (16) 39pts
B Flight
1st Peter Terry (20) 39pts
2nd John Ianson (26) 38pts
3rd Jimmy Day (20) 36pts
The day was a celebration of Aussie starlet Bruce Walters 50th birthday and
he kindly put on a Lewiinski’s buffet after the presentation.
Four players vied for the man of the match today, with three of them coming
from the senior flight as Kris K, John Pierrel and Nick ‘Elvis’ Shaw all
returned with excellent 39 point hauls. When the divots had settled it was
Kris K who emerged with the flight gold as John took the silver, leaving
Nick with his fourth bronze placing this week.
Peter Terry stood on the top of the junior flight podium with his own 39
points. Terry was closely followed up the steps by John Ianson a shot adrift
and Irishman Jimmy Day did what the society has been trying to do all week,
knocking Phil Davies off the podium as he gained a count back verdict over
Phil.
Rod Brown, Paul V Smith and Jimmy Day split the ‘2’s pot. Back at the ranch
the presentation went on a little longer than usual and it was just as well
there was no golf the next day.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd
Soi13/13 near Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and
add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is

Scott sublime at Green Valley
PSC golf from the Billabong Golf Bar
Monday, August 4, Eastern Star - Stableford
Eastern Star with greens a bit slow but the course was in
great condition. It is always a hard course that takes no prisoners, with water
left and out of bounds right on most of the holes, but in saying that it has to
be one of the best challenges of golf in this area and we don’t play it often
enough.
We only had a small group today and it took a long time to get back to the bar
in the thick traffic along the 331. The scores were good with Phil Waite taking
top spot with a great 39 points and Mal Farquharson coming in the bridesmaid
spot once again with 37. I think you need to catch the bouquet next time mate it
might make that little bit of difference.
There were no ‘2’s recorded.
Wednesday, August 6, Green Valley - Stableford
With a lot of the regulars away playing in our old mate
Barry Chadbourn’s Memorial tournament, we had a depleted field of only five
groups but they were capably looked after by Mal Farquharson and Steven Balfour
- thanks for that fellas.
We were joined by Henry O’Brien and his good mate John Needham, along with Max
Scott playing with us for the first time and Max had a great day out playing the
course in just one over off the bat, a fantastic round indeed.
The girls always give a showing also with Sa and Orn seeming to always be up
there in the prizes. It’s good to see as we are now getting six or seven ladies
playing here each week.
The course was in grand condition as usual with fast greens and no sign of a bad
lie on the fairways. The scores were great as well with Owen Walkley taking
fourth place with 34, being beaten on a count back by Jittina Tinpranee (Orn) in
third. Coming second was Nichawan Khiaophuang (Sa) with a great 40 points but
also losing on a count back to Max Scott with 40 off his five handicap.
There were three ‘2’s today coming from Henry O’Brien, Dave Hutchison, and Bob
Finley.
Friday, August 8, Burapha - Stableford
It’s been a long time since we played at Burapha, and what
a pleasure it was. We played A and B off the white tees and with six groups it
turned out to be a good day out. The course was in fantastic condition and even
if the rough is like cotton wool it is still a great course to play and the
price is as good a value you will get anywhere, in fact better than anywhere. We
will be playing this course on the first and third Fridays each month for the
next few months.
Welcome back today to Craig Wheeler from Sydney and also the Kiwi’s John Lowe
and Dion Lane, and although Dion didn’t get to town until 1 a.m. he still
managed to get into the prizes.
The scores were a mixed bag, which was surprising as playing from the white tees
it’s only 6,200 yards. Anyway, the Hong Kong copper Glyn Davies got fourth place
with a fine 34 points, Owen Walkley came in third with 37 and taking second on a
count back over Owen was Dion Lane with 20 points on the back nine. Taking line
honours today with a great three over off the bat was Gary Ritchie playing off
his seven handicap and getting 40 points. A great day out mate well done!
There were only two ‘2’s recorded although that should have been three but alas
the one that got away was from Gary whose ball moved at address which incurred a
shot penalty so the two became a three, hard luck mate. Owen Walkley and Dion
lane got the others.
Note: The Billabong is situated just off Siam Country Club Road looking
straight down Lake Mabprachan. Give Bob a call on 082 204 3411 if you are
looking for a game.

Hal Hart’s highs & lows
IPGC golf from The Haven

Rodney Nabbe & Philip Cass.
Monday, August 4, Mountain Shadow -
Stableford
CSS 71
1st Hal Hart (22) 39pts
2nd Alan Heavey (26) 34pts
3rd Rodney Nabbe (11) 34pts
4th Mike Lowe (16) 34pts
5th Allan Raaen (7) 34pts
For once in a very long while the course came off second best, as the CSS
for the day moved down to 71, when many of the day’s contenders managed
their rounds far better than usual.
Hal
Hart experiences the highs and lows of Pattaya.
The best of the day was owned by Hal Hart who made a dramatic return to form
to sweep to the top of the leader board once again and win by a five shot
margin, leaving the big hitters trailing in his wake. His round included
eight 3-pointers and even two blank spaces on the card on his way to
equaling his best ever round, finishing with an excellent 21 points under
the whip with many of the field breathing down his neck in hot pursuit.
Following the presentations, Hal went out to celebrate his unexpected high
along Walking Street and found, deep into the night, an equally unexpected
low, after his playing partner paid up for the evening’s entertainment and
beyond. What ensued has since become the stuff of legend from Soi Zero to
the Bay Shore.
Alan Heavey was the best of the rest as he won a four-way count back for
second place with a very strong 22 finish over the inward half, which left
pre-game favourite Rodney Nabbe in third after he could cobble together just
the standard 18 points.
Mike Lowe belied his age in taking fourth spot when he won over Allan Raaen
with a better 5 to 3 on the last three holes after they had tied the nine on
15 each and the six in 9s.
There were no 2’s in either division.
Wednesday, August 6, Green Valley - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Rodney Nabbe (11) 38pts
2nd Kevin Blake (8) 36pts
3rd Mike Lowe (16) 35pts
4th Hal Hart (22) 34pts
5th Russell Gilroy (15) 30pts
6th Don Everett (19) 30pts
After a huge and unexpected influx of golfers, extra buses and cars were
needed to transport all the hopefuls to the Green Valley course, which had
been missing from the calendar for several months due to overbooking.
However, on this occasion the groups were able to tee off more than an hour
ahead of their allotted tee time which added greatly to the day’s pleasure
of being able to challenge once again one of the more testing eighteens in
the area.
Rodney Nabbe confirmed his standing as the pre-match co-favourite along with
Hal Hart, as he took yet another win on his current tour of Thailand with a
two under handicap round that included two 4-pointers and five 3’s and even
including a blob on the seventeenth which was immediately rectified with a
gross birdie on the extremely difficult last hole.
That left Kevin Blake, who is still struggling to find his lost form but
would appear on this showing to be near to success, in second place just one
ahead of birthday boy Mike Lowe in third.
Hal Hart very nearly completed a stunning double considering his activities
in-between, and but for what should now be considered an unusual aberration
of four blank spaces on his card, when perhaps reminiscing over the week’s
previous highs and lows, he could have been on the top step once again but
had to settle for fourth spot.
There then came six players on 30 points with Russell Gilroy and Don Everett
topping the list with 17 each on the back nine, with Russell taking fifth
with a better 14 to 12 on the last six holes.
Kevin Blake cleaned out the rollover pool in the first division 2’s as once
again there were none in the second division.
Friday, August 8, Eastern Star - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Philip Cass (20) 31pts
2nd Don Everett (19) 30pts
3rd Alan Heavey (26) 29pts
4th Mike Hill (22) 28pts
5th Rodney Nabbe (11) 28pts
The last day of the week dawned with one too many clouds in the sky, and
with one of the longest courses on the schedule to contend with it
determined that the scores were the lowest by far, with none making the
standard of two over handicap. But with the addition of the Jomtiem group
playing here as usual on a Friday, the CSS was actually reduced to 71 for
the day.
Philip Cass had the best result of the group, even including three blobs, at
five over handicap and ran out the winner by one from Don Everett, who but
for an uncharacteristic zero on the last hole would have taken the day.
Alan Heavey made it three Aussies in the top three as he locked up third
place with a mind blowing ten going out and nineteen coming home for twenty
nine points.
It was left to Mike Hill to stop another complete Aussie rout of the English
as he took fourth place ahead of Rodney Nabbe with a better 12 to 10 on the
last six after they had tied the nine on 16 apiece.
Rodney Nabbe took a heavily loaded 2’s pot in the first division whilst once
again there were no takers in the second division.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact
mobile 094 567 5726 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between
Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and
you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15
on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A
schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at
www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Groves posts Monday best at Pattaya Country Club
PSC golf from The Growling Swan

Craig Duncan, Jim Groves & Alan Sanders.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, August 4, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
They came out of the woodwork for this one as we had 36
golfers on the starting sheet which reduced by one when we had a late
withdrawal in the morning.
There were many welcomes to be handed out which included PSC Social
Chairman Nigel Cannon, veteran Hugh O’Donnell back with us again,
Aussies Phil Taylor & Lyndon “Teflon” Przbylski, Jason Schembri from
Melbourne, Pattaya residents Chris Wilmott (formerly of St. Andrews in
Scotland) and Neil Fidele (formerly of Somerset in the UK) and Craig
Duncan, Gary Jones and “Aggro” from Perth, Western Australia. It was
sadly time to say farewell to Alan Sanders who will shortly be returning
to the Gold Coast in Australia.

Gary Monley & Peter Blackburn.
Most of us had not been to Pattaya Country Club for well over two years and
we were looking forward to seeing what the outcome of their extensive
renovations was. It was refreshing to have such a short journey to a golf
course and after making our way through the Pattaya Monday morning traffic
we arrived at PCC just 25 minutes later.
The “Boss Lady” was waiting for us to help with our check in and things went
very smoothly, enabling us to take our time with preparation before we
presented ourselves at the first tee. There was a group teeing off just
ahead of us and as we prepared our first four-ball for the start a shower of
rain caused us to run for cover but this only lasted a couple of minutes.
It was obvious that much work had been done on the course, particularly with
the greens and many changes to the bunkers and the front nine was fairly
impressive. The second nine was not as good as the first but is obviously a
“work in progress” which will only get better over the next few months.
There were the usual people who were not really happy with the course but
the majority of us enjoyed it and looked forward to playing it again in the
not too distant future.
A Division was won by Craig Duncan with 35 points and with 3 golfers on 34
points the resultant count back saw Kevin “Wayco” Waycott (19 point back
nine) finish second from Martin “Toddy” Todd (16 point back nine) in third
place and Gerd Riedler (15 point back nine) was fourth.
Jim Groves had the best score of the day and won B Division with 39 points,
four points ahead of John Davis in second spot. With 3 players on 31 points
another count back was needed which saw Chris Wilmott (18 point back nine)
come third from Keith “Kissy” Buchanan (15 point back nine) in fourth place
and Ken Hole (13 point back nine) just missed out.
In C Division it was Alan “Colonel” Sanders who finished on top with 35
points and in another count back with 2 golfers on 33 points it was Graham
“Grunter” Buckingham (19 point back nine) who finished second from Neil
Fidele (18 point back nine) in third place. Another count back to decide
fourth place saw Gary Jones (19 point back nine & 15 points on the last 6
holes) just finish ahead of Patrick Poussier (19 point back nine & 14 points
on the last 6 holes).
Division A (0-12)
1st Craig Duncan (11) 35pts
2nd Kevin Waycott (11) 34pts
3rd Martin Todd (8) 34pts
4th Gerd Riedler (6) 34pts
Division B (13-19)
1st Jim Groves (14) 39pts
2nd John Davis (15) 35pts
3rd Chris Wilmott (16) 31pts
4th Keith Buchanan (14) 31pts
Division C (20+)
1st Alan Sanders (25) 35pts
2nd Graham Buckingham (21) 33pts
3rd Neil Fidele (24) 33pts
4th Gary Jones (25) 32pts
Near Pins: 5th – Phil Taylor, 7th – Jim Groves, 12th – Gary Jones, 16th –
Gerd Riedler
Long Putts: 9th – Jim Groves, 18th – Alan Sanders
The Growling Swan NAGA Award, awarded to the golfer who has the worst score
on the day was won by Jayson Schembri
Thursday, August 7, Crystal Bay, C & A – Stableford
Another terrific ‘low season’ field of 34 were signed up to play
one of our favourites, Crystal Bay and there were several returnees &
newcomers to welcome. These were Vince Romeo from Melbourne, Tiziano Dal
Pastro from Italy, Paul Jackson from Melbourne, Alan White plus Russell Hall
also from Melbourne. It was also time to say farewell to Niall Stuart who
will shortly be off to New Zealand but he assures us that he will be back in
a week or so.
When we arrived at the course it appeared to be very quiet. After checking
in and preparation we made our way down to see The Starter who informed us
that we would be playing the C & A nines in that order. The numbers in the
field caused us to have two three-balls so we sensibly sent them away first
which meant they got away 8 minutes ahead of our booked time of 10.00 am.
The weather was great although fairly windy which was good as it helped to
make playing conditions a little easier although it made some holes rather
tough into the wind. The golf course was in very good condition although
some of the greens were a touch bumpy which at time set some challenges.
The two three-balls slowly got away from us and we completed a very
enjoyable round in four hours & fifteen minutes. The company was excellent,
weather was perfect and the course was as usual in top “nick”.
Your writer, Peter “Blacky” Blackburn shook off his very poor recent form
and won the A Division with 40 points, which was 4 points better than
Takeshi Hakozaki who finished second. With 3 golfers on 35 points a count
back was needed to sort out third & fourth and it was Martin “Toddy” Todd
(19 point back nine) who got third spot from John Pierrel (18 point back
nine) in fourth place with Mike Allidi (17 point back nine) just missing
out.
Division B was a close affair with 2 players on 41 points and it was Alan
“Woodsy” White (22 point back nine) who was declared the winner from John
Davis (19 point back nine) in second place. Graham “Grunter” Buckingham
finished third with 33 points and Ernie Picken was fourth on 32 points.
In C Division there was a “bolter” with Gary Monley’s 41 points easily good
enough to win from Russell Calcutt, 7 points further back in second place.
Yet another count back was required to determine third & fourth with 2
golfers on 33 points and it was Tiziano Dal Pastro (18 point back nine) who
got the “chocolates” from Geri “Birdy” Crilly (15 point back nine) in fourth
place.
Division A (0-14)
1st Peter Blackburn (11) 40pts
2nd Takeshi Hakozaki (12) 36pts
3rd Martin Todd (8) 35pts
4th John Pierrel (10) 35pts
Division B (15-22)
1st Alan White (18) 41pts
2nd John Davis (15) 41pts
3rd Graham Buckingham (21) 33pts
4th Ernie Picken (21) 32pts
Division C (23+)
1st Gary Monley (33) 41pts
2nd Russell Calcutt (34) 34pts
3rd Tiziano Dal Pastro (24) 33pts
4th Geri Crilly (25) 33pts
Near Pins: A8 – John Davis, C4 – Alan White, C7 – Walter Baechli
Long Putts: A9 – Mike Allidi, C9 – Jayson Schembri

Trev the Great - again
PSC golf from Siam Country Resort

Trevor Taylor.
Tuesday, August 5,
Pattavia - Stableford
Tuesday was a visit to Pattavia, under clear skies with a light
breeze to keep the heat down, and provide a small variable in club
calculation.
Trevor Taylor (H/cap 36) brought his son Ben and grandson Tim with
him again today, and consequently showed off his skill, with a nice
37 points to lead the way. Next best was Martin Hayes (16), close
behind with a solid 36 points after finishing with a good birdie for
4 points.
Near pins went to Paddy on 17, to about 2 feet, converting for a
nice 2 for 4 points, while Willem got 2 near pins also.
Thursday, August 7,
Mt. Shadow – Stableford
Mountain Shadow was our venue for Thursday’s game, with
the course in good condition throughout and the weather looking
after us also.
One of our Qatar visitors, Iam Waddell (20), led the way with a very
good 38 points while Martin Hayes (16) edged Jeff Wylie (6) out for
second spot on count back 18/16, after both signed for 34 points.
Jeff gained some consolation picking up the only 2 near pins of the
day, but some poor putting did not see any conversions, in fact
quite the opposite on one occasion.
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just
off Siam Country Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11,
turn right after 50 metres, with the venue on the left another 200
metres along. Golf from here is generally played on Tuesday &
Thursday, with the Resort hosting prompt presentations on both days.
As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies &
seniors (>60s) who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089
094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers
& good golfing!

LeNoury nails it
PSC golf from The Golf Club

Golfing apostles: Mark Wood, Peter LeNoury &
John Emmerson.
Steve Ellison
Monday, August 4, Green Valley (white tees) –
Stableford
T1st Peter LeNoury (11) 39pts
T1st John Emmerson (13) 39pts
T2nd Wayne Cotterell (12) 38pts
T2nd Mark Wood (7) 38pts
It was another beautiful day for golf as the weather continued to be
unseasonably cool and overcast. It was just about perfect conditions
today at Green Valley as 7 groups teed off right on time. They do a
great job of management at this course and it always seems to go
smoothly here no matter what hiccups the lads throw at Captain Phil.

John Emmerson, Tim Lazecki & Mike Omiya.
It was time for the locals to exact their revenge today and the top
spots were reserved for the home crowd. Mark Wood continued his fine
form with the shortest backswing in town to tally up 38 points and a tie
with Wayne Cotterell. Mark is back to work now for the usual 28 day
stint to give the rest of us a chance for the coins.
TGC partner John Emmerson has actually been playing some of his best
golf in a long time and also continues to score well enough to tie at
the top of the podium. But all credit must go to golfing stalwart Peter
LeNoury as this guy plays golf practically every day he is here and I
can’t remember the last time he had a day off. Peter has been a long
time supporter of TGC and it’s good to see a fellow Jaguar enthusiast
out there in top form.
Tuesday, August 5, Siam Waterside (white tees) -
Stableford
1st Tim Lazecki (19) 38pts
T2nd John Emmerson (13) 37pts
T2nd Mike Omiya (8) 37pts
This was the first time TGC has played the newest golf course in
Pattaya, Siam Waterside. It is a very different course to the 2 famous
sisters of Plantation and the Old Course, but there are several holes
that will remind you of Plantation as their clubhouse is very visible at
a few locations. It is not my favourite of the 3 courses, but maybe in a
few years of maturity (the course, that is) I will possibly grow to
appreciate it.

The 18th at Pattavia Century from the new
clubhouse.
After some initial confusion with the starter, I would suggest to any
other groups playing here that your 4-balls are on time and in the
correct starting order as getting out to the practice green and 1st tee
area is a high security event in itself. Phil was pulling his hair out,
and that ain’t easy!
It is an open layout from I.M.G. Design that winds its way around 2
large lakes and is very exposed to the wind. Indeed, we played to a 30
mph steady blast through much of the round.
Condition of the course was superb and the last 3 holes, like the Old
Course, provide an exciting finish. From what I understand, the Honda
LPGA event will be held here in 2016. The clubhouse is austere,
minimalist zen, and a design I am sure that Yohji Yamamoto would approve
of.
We had 22 golfers out today and I think a lot of that had to do with the
curiosity factor. We paid 2,800 baht for their Sports Day rate which
includes green fee, caddy fee and buggy on cart paths only.
To shoot in the mid-30’s here today would be a very good day on the
course. As mentioned, the wind was a howlin’ and with all the water and
deep trouble about, there was little room for error on a course that
would take no prisoners.
The tie for second place went to our visiting buddy Mike Omiya and TGC
partner John Emmerson. They got round with 37 points on the card whilst
no one else shot to their handicap on the day. The most impressive
number though was the 38 turned in by Tim Lazecki. To shoot that well
and be playing off 19 is quite an achievement. Well done Timmy, you
showed the boys how!
Friday, August 8, Pattavia Century (white tees) –
Stableford
1st Chris Smith (8) 34pts
2nd Gary Hooky (15) 31pts
3rd David Ferris (24) 29pts
This must be the most improved golf course of 2014, and in the locker
room after the round, all talk was of how impressive this course was. We
played here a month ago and it was getting to be good, but now we can
say it is a very playable and enjoyable track with some of the trickiest
greens in the province.
I had always been under the impression that this was a Nick Faldo golf
course, but the new clubhouse literature states it is a Robert McFarland
design. Let me research this one for the next time we play here.
It will take you close to 1 hour down the 331 to get to this golf course
from Pattaya, and the last 7 clicks are brutal in the pothole
department. The new clubhouse is fantastic, has quality lockers and
showers, and the food and beverages are all very good and reasonably
priced. It’s nice not to be held hostage to high prices at a clubhouse
restaurant for once, other courses please take note! Our Friday green
fee of 550 baht was a bargain.
On to the scoring, and we had 5 blokes on 28 (I did mention those tricky
greens, right?) as 3-putts were the order of the day. Greens were fast
and many were of the humped turtleback shape that are hard to hold. Some
putts even found themselves running off the green!
Only 2 golfers managed to get more than 30 Stableford points today.
David Ferris was nearly there, but his 29 was still good enough for 3rd
place. Gary Hooky did very well to “break 30” so Gary, 2nd place is all
yours buddy. The primo player for today was Chris Smith playing off an 8
handicap who brought home 34 points to win all those “handsome man
vouchers” from Captain Phil and a well deserved victory it was as well.
Thanks to all who joined us for another great week of golf in our
Pattaya Paradise.
