Melly wins 2014 King’s Cup Pattaya Marathon to maintain Kenyan supremacy
Runners sprint over the line
at 3:45 a.m. for the start of the full marathon race.
Athletes from Kenyan again dominated the King’s Cup
Pattaya Marathon, but their pace winning the top six places proved decidedly
slower than in previous years.
Kenya’s Alex Melly crosses
the finish line in a time of 2.25:32 hours to win the 2014 King’s Cup
Pattaya Marathon, Sunday, July 27.
This year’s champion Alex Melly arrived at the finish
line with a time of 2.25:32 hours, almost exactly five minutes behind last
year’s winning pace set by three-time champion James Kariuki, who did not
participate this time.
Bernard Mwenda Muthoni crossed the line second in 2.29:17 hours, Willy
Ilipilemol Rotich took third with 2.37:34, Lukas Wambua Muteti came fourth
with a time of 2.43:31 and John Kipkorir Rutto placed fifth with 2.55:10.
All won cash prizes.
The first non-Kenyan to cross the finish line was Thai runner Saravut
Ngamsri – a runner in his 40s – finishing seventh with a time of 2:47:47. He
easily won the age 40+ bracket as well.
Henrik Jannborg was the first westerner to finish, crossing the line eighth
with a time of 2:52:01.
Kenyan women also continued their dominance of the event, but again at a
much-more-leisurely pace. Viola Jepghirahir Kimeli won the King’s Cup with a
time of 3.00:15 hours, nearly 18 minutes behind last year’s record-setting
time of 2:42:46 posted by Kenyan Rose Chekurui Kosgei.
Kimeli finished 14th overall among the men and women, again showing how slow
the 2014 race was. Kosgei’s blistering pace last year still only allowed her
to finish 17th overall.
Second place in this year’s women’s group was Tabitha Kibet of Thailand
finishing with a time of 3.07:57 hours and in third was Kenyan Cecilia
Wangui Warutumo in 3.19:03.
In all, nearly 10,000 runners from 36 countries ran in July 27’s myriad of
races. The full marathon attracted 730 participants – 614 men and 84 women –
with an average finish time of 4:54:53.19.
Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol
Kunplome sounds the horn to set the athletes on their way.
As usual, Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome, city council members
and former MPs were out on Beach Road at 3 a.m. Sunday morning to set the
athletes on their way. The IAAF standard event saw the international field
bolt off the starting line at Central Festival Pattaya Beach, with
wheelchair racers leaving at 3:30 a.m., full-marathon runners at 3:45 a.m.
and half-marathoners at 5:30 a.m. Participants in the 5 km. “fun run” and
walk departed at 6:15 a.m.
Organizers had offered hefty cash prizes for record breakers, but none of
the pervious marks were ever in jeopardy. The best time recorded for a male
runner was set in 2007 at 2.19:35. The top female mark was Kosgei’s 2013
time.
Elite runners pound the
Pattaya pavements in the early hours of Sunday morning.
In the wheelchair full marathon, Thais took all the top
places. Prawat Wahoram won HM the King’s Cup, with second place going to
Raewat Tana, third to Sumas Phanalai, fourth to Khajornsak Thummasopon and
fifth to Ekachai Janthrathorn.
In the half marathon, other African runners took their turn. Abera Tariku
Pemelash of Ethiopia took the top honours with a time of 1:12:15, which also
secured the top place in the 20-29 age bracket. Paul Kimani Kiragu, a
Kenyan, finished second with 1.12:46 while youngster Tesfay Negash of
Ethiopia, who won the 16-19 bracket, came in third at 1:13:54. Nelson Kiptoo
of Kenya finished fourth at 1.14:17 and his compatriot Godwin Kipruto took
fifth at 1.16:45.
The top five in the wheelchair
marathon pose on the podium with their trophies. The race was won by
Thailand’s Prawat Wahorom (far right).
The first Thai to cross the finish line in the
half-marathon was Thanapol Pattanapolsan, finishing sixth overall with a
time of 1.19:03.
Africans didn’t win everything though. A Thai - Nattaya Thanaronnawat - won
the women’s half marathon and the 30-39 age bracket with a time of 1.26:15.
Suwaree Thanaaeknithiwat finished second at 1.32:33 and Jongkolkanok
Kamolcham came in third at 1.49:03.
The quarter marathon showed the Pattaya race’s international appeal, with
Desta Fitsun Weldu of Azerbaijan finishing first at 34 minutes and 25
seconds. Enock Kipchirchir Kigen of Kenya finished second at 34:41 and Thai
Sanchai Namkhet third at 36:04.
Bunlap Samakkhanontharan, who won the age 14-19 quarter-marathon bracket,
nearly placed in the overall race with his time of 38:04.
The race attracted
participants from all age brackets as up to 10,000 runners hit the Pattaya
streets.
In the women’s quarter marathon, Kenyan Werkilem Shenu
Mamecha won first place with a time of 39:27, her fellow compatriot
Valentine Jepkemoi Serem took second at 42:50, Thai Sontiya Saywaeo placed
third at 45:39 and age 14-19 bracket winner Suphatcha Suwanna of Thailand
was fourth at 46:18. Thailand’s Woraphan Nuanlsri finished fifth at 46:41.
In the 5km. “fun run,” Phiripat Boranmun won first, Swiss Duangthip took
second and Chominth Thongsiri third. The female winner was Pikul Thonglue
ahead of second placed Theemaporn Khamruang and in third place was Ilada
Nasikarn.

Thai sailor takes top Asian honors
at prestigious ISAF Youth Worlds
Kamolwan Chanyim was the top Asian sailor in the
Laser Radial at the ISAF Youth Worlds.
(Photo/Luis Fráguas ISAF Youth Worlds)
Thai national sailing champ Kamolwan Chanyim retained the title of top Asian
sailor in her class for the fourth time at the International Sailing
Federation’s Youth World Championship 2014 (ISAF Youth Worlds), held in the
beautiful sun-drenched town of Tavira, Portugal, from July 12-18.
Competing in the Laser Radial Girls’ fleet, the young Thai athlete, 18, who
will sail in the Asian Games in September, had stiff competition this year
from Singapore’s Jillian Lee, a very talented young woman who only just
missed podium spots in two other major youth regattas earlier this year.
Kamolwan entered the final race of the world’s most prestigious youth
regatta only two points behind Jillian (the only other Asian in the top 15)
and seven points short of a top ten position.
Jirawat Jadklay and Dylan Whitcraft.
(Photo/Malee Whitcraft)
Kamolwan’s consistency in the last three races - held in light, medium and
higher winds - including a 13th place finish in the last race, did not bump
her into the top ten, but it gave her the edge needed to retain the title of
top Asian female Laser Radial sailor at the ISAF Youth Worlds for her fourth
time since she first participated in 2010 as a 14 year old. She finished
12th overall in the fleet of 47 sailors. Jillian, meanwhile, had a difficult
last race and dropped to 16th overall. Among other Asians competing, Yuka
Kishi of Japan was 25th overall and Alaiza Belmonte of the Philippines 31st,
with sailors from Hong Kong, Malaysia, China, and India following.
“I
have improved a lot in the last year,” said Kamolwan, who returned to rejoin
the Asian Games sailing team for training in Sattahip. “Now, after racing, I
can analyze my performance and know what I need to improve. In Tavira, it
was very important to remain alert to wind shifts; to really use the waves
on downwind legs; to have confident starts; and to know where the
competition is.”
In early July, the young Thai also took part in a seven day Olympic coaching
camp under the ISAF Emerging Nations Program (ENP), sponsored by the Royal
Spanish Sailing Federation, which will host the first 2016 Olympic qualifier
later this year in Santander, Spain. She credited her growth to support from
Kingdom Property which has enabled her to enter several high performance
international regattas and coaching programs, including the ENP, over the
past year. Kingdom Property is developing the Southpoint Pattaya condominium
project just around the corner from the country’s top international sailing
venue, the Royal Varuna Yacht Club.
Thailand also had a team in the 29er Open Skiff class. Three-time Optimist
national sailing team member Jirawat Jadklay teamed up with Dylan Whitcraft
of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Pattaya to take on competitors from around
the world in the fast moving boat class, which is new to Thailand. They
finished 28th overall.
The top ranked ISAF Youth Worlds, which is limited to those under 19 years
of age as of the end of the year, welcomed a record-breaking 367 athletes
from 67 countries this year. Taking the Nations Trophy for the most medals
was Spain, which also won the gold in both the Laser Radial Boys and Girls
fleets.

Chonburi stages 7th Youth Muay Thai boxing championship
Fighters are shown in action
at the Muay Thai Vigo Championship held in Chonburi city, Friday, July 25.
Khomsan Ekachai, Governor of Chonburi, presided over the
Muay Thai Vigo Championship on Friday 25 July at a temporary boxing ring
erected at the gymnasium of Choburi Provincial Organization in Chonburi
city. The competition was completed in one day and featured bouts between 8
fighters from around the world, including one from Thailand, in a 3-rounds
marathon Muay Thai event to win the champion’s belt and 300,000 baht prize
money, while the runner up took home 200,000 baht.
Along with the marathon round-robin contest, there were also WBC titles on
the line in the form of a youth straw-weight match-up between “Knockout CP
Freshmart”, the WBC world youth strawweight champion, and “Chris Alfunte”, a
challenger from Philippines, and a 10-round youth light-flyweight bout
between current WBC youth world champ “Kongfa CP Freshmart” and “Jomthong
Sor Songsaeng” from the Rajadamnern Boxing Stadium.
In the former contest, “Knockout CP Freshmart” lived up to his name and
defended his title with a TKO of “Chris Alfunte” in the 5th round. Now up to
#6 on the WBC rankings, “Knockout” will be hoping to get a world title shot
in the not too distant future. The second fight proved to be more of a
mismatch as “Kongfa” comprehensively outgunned “Sor Songsaeng” and scored a
second round KO.

TAT on board for Hua Hin Cha-am Golf Festival 2014
Banyan Golf Course is one of
10 courses offering special deals on green fees during the Hua Hin/Cha-am
Golf Festival 2014.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has joined forces
with the Phetchaburi – Prachuap Khiri Khan Golf Course Association and 10 of
the leading golf courses in the region to host the Hua Hin/Cha-am Golf
Festival 2014 between August and September 2014.
TAT Governor Thawatchai Arunyik said, “The Hua Hin/Cha-am Golf Festival has
been held successfully for several years now to promote golf and other
sports that tourists can enjoy in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan. As
the event has become better known by sportsmen and women internationally, it
has become much anticipated by local businesses, which enjoy a boost of
visitors during what has traditionally been the province’s low season.”
Participating courses include: Imperial Lake View Hotel and Golf Club,
Majestic Creek Golf Club and Resort, Palm Hills Golf Resort and Country
Club, Kaeng Krachan Country Club and Resort, Royal Hua Hin Golf Course, The
Eagle Milford Golf Club, Springfield Village Golf and Spa, Banyan Golf
Course, Black Mountain Golf Course, and Sea Pines Golf Course.
During the festival, the 10 participating golf courses will offer special
promotions between 1,000 and 1,800 baht per person per round. The prices
will vary from course to course.
Golf competitions will take place every Sunday from 3 August – 5 October,
2014. The fee to compete is between 1,600 baht and 2,400 baht per person.
Again, this will vary depending on the course.
Anyone interested in joining the Hua Hin/Cha-am Festival 2014 can make
advance bookings to pay green fees or to enter the competitive events. This
enables them to enter a lucky draw and to win an amazing prize – a Honda
Brio Amaze. The lucky winner will be announced on the final day of the
festival.
Mr. Thawatchai said, “The lush areas around the towns of Hua Hn and Cha-am
boast some of Thailand’s best golf courses, many of which have received
international acclaim. So TAT would like to invite both local and
international golfers to come and experience golfing holidays during this
season when the countryside is at its greenest. They’ll get to enjoy some
wonderful golf and can take advantage of the special rates offered by many
courses during this festival.”

Double success for Ken Miller
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
(Left to right) Harry
Vincenzi, Chris Voller and Sid Ottaway
Monday, July 21,
Rayong C.C. – Stableford
This was our first visit here in nine months and there were a few players
out today who had never played here before.
It was a 10-15 cut in division 1 today with 18+ in division 2 and playing
off 24, Ken Miller came in with 38 points to win division 2, beating Willy
Van Heetvelde on a 20/19 back-nine count back while Bryan Priestley took
third some seven points behind.
Tony Bless topped division 1 with 36 points, one up on Chris Voller in
second and Harry Vincenzi pipped Mikael Andersson for third, 15/14 on the
back-nine after they both scored 34 points.
Tony Bless birdied the 5th for the only ‘2’ of the day while near pins went
to Tony Bless, Steve Jones, Harry Vincenzi and Ron Miller (2).
Tuesday, July 22,
Green Valley - Stableford
There were 23 out today but as we teed off the heavens opened up
and our last group was delayed for 20 minutes at the start.
The clouds were threatening more rain all round but this did not deter Chris
Voller who won division 1 with a fine 41 points. Wilf Latham came in second
on 34 after beating Tony Bless 19/16 on the back nine.
Ken Miller was the winner in division 2 with 36 points ahead of Willy Van
Heetvelde in second, two points behind, and in third place was Sid Ottaway
with 33.
Harry Vincenzi birdied the 16th for the only ‘2’ of the day and near pin
prizes were shared by Mikael Andersson, Steve Jones (2), Harry Vincenzi,
Paul Butler, Robert Garrick, Eiichi Matsumoto and Iain Walsh.
Friday, July 25, Eastern Star - Stableford
It was a nine to fourteen cut in division 1 today as there were
many good players out and playing off 11 Bill Bertram topped division 1 with
36 points. Marty Rock trailed in second on 32 and Edward Bourn beat John
Batty and Jeff Cargill 18/17/16 on a back-nine count back for third after
they all came in with 31 points each.
Frank Kelly won division 2 honours with 35 points ahead of Iain Walsh in
second on 32 and the organizer beats Alan Hansen and Sid Ottaway 16/15/15 on
count back for third after they all shot 30 points.
Frank Kelly birdies the 6th to record the only ‘2’ of the day and scoop two
rollovers in division 2.
The wind played havoc with near pins as Alan Hansen was the only player to
claim a prize in division 1 and Frank Kelly (2) and Sid Ottaway did likewise
in division 2.
It was bon voyage today to Edward Bourn, back to the Lincolnshire
countryside rather than the Charoen optical shop.

Yves Moultier - a never ending story
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday, July 20, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Bob Watson (6) 41pts
2nd Paul Smith (4) 38pts
3rd Dave Hutchinson (0) 37pts
B Flight
1st Yves Moultier (15) 39pts
2nd Eddy Beilby (15) 39pts
3rd Christian Boysen (19) 37pts
Near Pins: No 5 Dave Stockman, No 8 Pat Regan, No 12 Jum Karagit, No 16 Dave
Hutchinson.
Yves
Moultier.
Aussie star Bob Watson garnered the title spot with a superb gross 73, which
racked up 41 points to take A Flight and the man of the match honours. The
rest of the low handicappers showed well on the day with Paul Smith having
to settle for second despite a sizzling 38 points. A log-jam of four players
vied for the third spot involving David Hutchinson, Ed ‘our man in the
Whitehouse’ Wyckoff, Paul Bray and Kevin Waycott; when the divots had
settled it was Dave the scratch player who filled the bronze spot leaving Ed
Wyckoff, Paul and Kevin standing at sea level and pot less
Incredibly Yves Moultier once again took charge of B Flight to record his
fifth win in five outings with the society. This set a record at Lewiinski’s
that may take some time to equal as Yves continued his unforgettable run of
golf (at least for him) and leave the rest of B Flight to wonder what they
have to do to stop him.
Yves was closely pursued by Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby and Phil Davies, both
with steady 37 point returns but with the former having the better of the
count back
Bob Watson, Dave Stockman, Jim Brackett, William Peach and Jim Bell shared
the 2’s pot.
Tuesday, July 22, Bangpra - Stableford
A Flight
1st Kevin Rogers (11) 39pts
2nd Connie Walsh (11) 34 pts
3rd JP Maffray (11) 34 pts
B Flight
1st Phil Davies (21) 35pts
2nd Yves Moultier (17) 34pts
3rd Mike Jefferys (18) 33pts
It was off to one of the most entertaining venues for the day, the Japan
promotion Bangpra, where a visit from the friendly monkeys is quite common.
Anyway, no one was more entertained than Aussie star Kevin Rogers as his
excellent 39 points took the top spot in A Flight. Kevin was the only player
to better par on the day and he was five clear of Ireland’s Connie Walsh. It
should be noted that Connie needed a count back to secure the silver over
society friend JP Maffray.
The top spot in B Flight went to Phil Davies who made it a second pay window
visit this week. Yves Moultier, who has really put the pedal down to the
floor of late, made it six podium spots in as many games with his 34 points
and Mike ‘the Welsh Wizard’ Jefferys tided up the flight on 33.
Connie Walsh was the sole heir to the 2’s pot.
Wednesday, July 23, Treasure Hills - Stableford
A Flight
1st Adam Barton (15) 40pts
2nd Tom Gorey (15) 40pts
3rd Connie Walsh (11) 32pts
B Flight

Neil maintains hot form
PSC golf from Siam Country Resort
Neil Harvey & Martin Hayes.
Tuesday, July 22, Khao Kheow -
Stableford
Tuesday was a visit to arguably one of the best courses in the
area, Khao Kheow, where we played the B & C loops from the yellow tees at
about 6480 yards. The course was in good condition overall, while the
weather was hot and humid, with just a light breeze to relieve the
conditions.
Neil Harvey (H/cap 19) continued his good form with a day’s best of 39
points, to be 5 clear of Martin Hayes (16) & Jeff Wylie (6), with Martin
edging Jeff for 2nd spot on count back 19/16. Jeff got some consolation
collecting 3 near pins, with Jonathan getting the remaining one.
Thursday, July 24, Crystal Bay - Stableford
We made a visit to Crystal Bay on Thursday, with the C & A
combination being the test for the day. We played from the white tees today,
at about 6450 yards, with the fairways being in good condition while the
greens were patchy at best. They lack any consistency of roll as there are
several types of grass across the entire surface, making putting more a
lottery than a test of skill.
Daniel Oshiro (23) returned from a long absence with an outstanding 44
points, to put the rest of the field in the shade. Behind Daniel’s score,
the best of the rest was Neil Harvey (19) with 36 points, also picking up a
near pin; Daniel, Willem & Jonathan also scored near pin rewards.
The PSC monthly tournament held at Pattana B & C on July 25 was well
supported by SCR, but sadly (for us anyway) nobody got amongst the prizes,
although Jim, Willem & Jeff did benefit from the lucky draws.
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off Siam
Country Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn right after
50 metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres along. Golf from
here is generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with the Resort hosting
prompt presentations on both days. As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL
golfers, including ladies & seniors (>60s) who have opted for the “Silver”
tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you
there, cheers & good golfing!

Sullivan & Cochrane set the standard
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Alan Sullivan and Reg Cochrane with one of Bert’s finest.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, July 22, Greenwood C & A – Stableford
Looks like the low, low season is over and the number of golfers is
returning to normal as we had a good turnout for this trip to Greenwood.
We arrived at the course to see the car park was totally empty and the course
also was surprisingly quiet, so we were able to have a nice speedy round. It had
rained the night before and the course was quite wet but otherwise in good
condition with good and fast greens and lush fairways.
Back at Bert’s it was soon time for the results and we had two flights today
with the winner in the A Flight (0 to 18) being Alan Sullivan with a fine 40
points. In second was Tom Herrington with 39 points and in third was Max Scott
with 38.
In the B Flight the winner was Reg Cochrane with an excellent 41 points. Ahead
of Dick Warberg in second with 39 and in third was Mick Coghlan with 36.
Near pins went to Alan Sullivan (2), Reg Cochrane and Mashi.

Cooney stays on course for monthly award
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Gerry Cooney leads the way in the Golfer of the
Month competition.
Monday, July 21, Pattana B & C – Stableford
Pattana is not everyone’s favourite course and it was only a small
group that turned out for our Stableford competition, once again sponsored by
KPK Foods. The skies were overcast with a fresh breeze blowing, so some of the
longer holes were playing very long indeed (none more so than the infamous par
four, B8 hole).
It’s always a daunting start teeing off on the B1 hole with water on both sides,
and surely your scribe wasn’t the only person to hit his opening drive straight
into the right hand lake, as the breeze was blowing straight across the fairway.
The fairways were in good condition but soft due to heavy watering, and the
greens were also immaculate but as always very tricky.
It was certainly a day for the longer and straighter hitters, so it was no
surprise that Gerry Cooney and Colin Greig were the only players to get anywhere
near their handicaps, taking first and second places respectively. It usually
takes a bit of luck to make a good round, and Colin Greig produced the shot of
the day on the aforementioned 475 yard par four hole (B8), his drive bounding
down the cart path and coming to rest just before the water, a mere 140 yards
from the green!
Gordon Sutherland was playing the 11th game of his first visit to Pattaya, and
although he’s struggled so far, he’s enjoyed every one, so it was great to see
him finally make it onto the podium to take 3rd place (even if he failed to come
back to the presentation to collect his prize!).
1st Gerry Cooney (13) 35pts
2nd Colin Greig (7) 34pts
3rd Gordon Sutherland (25) 27pts
Near Pins: Geoff Parker and Gerry Cooney.
Wednesday, July 23, Laem Chabang Valley & Lakes – Stableford
The clubhouse at Laem Chabang is currently undergoing renovation
work, and the management are consequently offering a reduced green fee rate,
which provides the opportunity to play this great course at a reasonable price.
The temporary changing rooms and showers are well organized and it’s really no
hardship, especially when you have your own private bathroom for a shower (or
even relax in the bath tub) after the game.
Not for the first time in recent months there was some controversy over which
tees to play from, so we decided that we’d have two separate competitions, one
from the blues for those who wanted to play the “proper” course (6,718 yards),
and the other from the whites (6,287 yards) for the elder citizens.
The course was in good condition and always provides a stern test, especially
when starting on the Valley nine (it should really be called the “water nine”)
where one’s round can rapidly be derailed in the abundant water hazards over the
first four holes.
The sky was overcast and the temperature relatively cool, so with the course
quiet ahead of us, everything was set for a fine day’s golf for the 15
competitors. In the event the scores were slightly disappointing with Tony
Robbins carding the best score of the day with 34 points to win the “short
flight”. Unsurprisingly, Paul Smith was the best performer from the blue tees
finishing three points clear of his good mate Colin Greig. The rest of the
scores were uninspiring, but everyone agreed that it had been a great day’s golf
on a true championship course.
Blue Tees
1st Paul Smith (4) 33pts
2nd Colin Greig (7) 30pts
White Tees
1st Tony Robbins (14) 34pts
2nd Steve Durey (21) 32pts
Near Pins: Colin Hammond, Geoff Cox, Ken Young and Colin Greig.
Friday, July 27, Greenwood C & A – Stableford
A smaller group of golfers today because several regulars elected to
play in the PSC monthly competition being held at Pattana G.C. The sky was
overcast with a stiff breeze blowing as we teed off with no other golfers in
sight ahead of us on the difficult C nine.
The fairways and greens were in great condition but the wind was causing some
problems, and some of the par fours were playing very long - none more so than
C9 where the best score recorded by any of the players was a 6.
The round was completed in good time, and John Graham rediscovered some form to
take first place three points clear of Geoff Parker who finished ahead of Niall
Glover on a count back.
Gerry Cooney’s win on Monday was sufficient to keep him in the lead for the
Golfer of the Month title, but there’s a handful of contenders within a couple
of points from him, with two games still remaining.
1st John Graham (10) 35pts
2nd Geoff Parker (14) 32pts
3rd Niall Glover (11) 32pts
Near Pins: John Graham.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play out
of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and almost
opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if
you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive golf competition why not
come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new players
are always welcome. Contact “Buff” on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663 for all
enquiries or check website: www.bunkersociety.com.

115 support new Golf Chairman’s debut tourney
PSC 134th Monthly Golf Tournament
Low Gross winner Bob Watson (left) with PSC Golf
Chairman Mark West. Report: Nigel
Cannon/Photos: Peter Blackburn
Friday, July 25, Pattana Sports & Golf Club
The 134th monthly was the first under the stewardship of newly
elected Golf Chairman Mark West and a great success it was. The choice of
Pattana - playing the B and C nines - was popular with the 115 players who
enjoyed this delightful course which was presented in great condition, and
with fine golfing weather and a smooth check-in all was set for a great day.
Unfortunately the management allowed a number of 5-balls in the middle of
our competition which made for some delays, but the management later
apologized for this error.
Ladies Flight winner Noi Emmerson.
As members arrived they were greeted by Mark, Peter Blackburn, and Nigel
Cannon for registration, the three being at the course early to prepare the
markers for long drives and near pins. Registration went efficiently with
some late withdrawals and additions and it was off to the 1st and 10th tees
for the start.
A little over 4 hours later, as the players were returning their cards to
Mark, Peter and Nigel, it was clear that the course had played tough for
some but not for the low gross winner Bob Watson (H/cap 6) who came in with
a great 76 gross.
In ‘A’ Flight, playing medal from the white tees, it was count-back for top
spot with both Chris Kerr (5) and Jean Maffray (11) having net 72’s, but
with Chris just getting the nod on count back. There was an unusual
situation for third place with Dave Stockman (7) and John Pierrel (11)
having equal scores on the back 9, 6 and 3 and it went to the 3 hardest
holes where Dave had a birdie!
Seniors Flight winner Barry Oats.
In ‘B’ and ‘C’ Flights, playing Stableford from the yellow tees, 40 points
from Tim Bradfield (12) and Merie Humphreys (20) saw them win their
respective flights.
Phillip Davies (21) with 36 points took ‘D’ Flight, Noi Emmerson (18) with
39 won the Ladies and Barry Oats (20) the Seniors.
The prize presentation and buffet was at Shenanigans in Jomtien where Dave
from The Sportsman provided an excellent buffet which, with efficient drink
service from the staff, all served to create a pleasant evening.
At presentation time Nigel called order and introduced Golf Chairman Mark
West who in turn introduced his golf committee members – Dick Warberg, Peter
Blackburn, Andre Vandyk and Gerd Riedier. He then went on to express his
appreciation to the day’s players and those who helped out, i.e. Peter,
Nigel, Noi and special thanks to the PSC office staff.
C Flight winner Merle Humphreys.
Mark outlined his activities over the past month and announced that Bangpra
would be joining the PSC voucher system this month and he was in negotiation
with other courses also. He also announced that Shenanigans will be giving a
15% discount on food and drink to PSC members – on production of their
membership card.
Nigel then announced the winners and Mark presented the prizes. This was
followed by the lucky draw and the 50/50 draw which included four 1000 baht
vouchers kindly donated by Shenanigans. The lucky lady who won the 50/50 was
Suwanna Kerjale, who is a caddy at Kheow Kheo and who kindly returned half
of her winnings to be donated to charity.
So ended another excellent PSC tournament, the next is on Friday 22nd August
at Green Valley with presentation at Lewiinski’s – sign up early!
50-50 winner Suwanna Kerjale receives her prize
from Mark West.
Long Drive winner in A Flight - Mark Butler.

4th John Swanson (24) 33pts
Greenwood was the game today, up route 331 for 1 hour and then a quick check-in
before teeing off on A1 under overcast skies but hot conditions. The course was
in the best shape it has been in recent times and was great value so we will be
back.
We got around in about 4 hours, despite some slow groups in front, and back in
the clubhouse welcomes went out to Graeme Lomas and Karl Beter.
Andre Vandyk was the winner today for the second week in a row with a fine 41
points. Tom Cotton came second with 39 points, Karl Beter was third with 34, and
John Swanson took fourth on count back over Dave Richardson and Daryl Evans.
Thursday, July 24, Crystal Bay A & C - Stabelford
1st Dave Richardson (26) 36pts
2nd Lassie Pettersson (24) 32pts
3rd Karl Beter (29) 29pts
Crystal Bay on Thursday and we teed off A1 approx. 15 mins ahead of schedule
into a stiff breeze. The course was in good shape but the greens will need some
remedial action soon.
Dave Richardson was the winner today with an even par 36 points, four up on
Lassie Pettersson in second while Karl Beter took third with 29.

JP & Lindsay take the plaudits at Navy
PSC golf from The Growling Swan
John Pierrel, Seesa Phompinmon
& Lindsay Slender.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, July 21, Plutaluang E & S – Stableford
Plutaluang was the venue for the first event of this particular
week and many of us had not played here for quite a while so we were looking
forward to the visit. After a late withdrawal the night before we were left
with a field of 19 which is still pretty good for the “low season”.
We assembled at The Growling Swan and welcomed Keith “Kissy” Buchanan who
was back having a game with us and as all were on time, even Patrick, we
departed the GS 5 minutes early a and headed South down Sukhumvit, arriving
at the Navy course 44 minutes later. We checked in and at 500 baht green fee
this was terrific value and we were informed by the Starter that East &
South nines were our designated nines for the day, so off we went to the tee
on East 1.
With no-one ahead of us our first group, a three ball hit off ten minutes
ahead of schedule and although the three of us were walking we maintained a
fairly steady pace. The weather was fine with intermittent sun but it was
extremely humid and the course was in good shape with many of the greens
being quite quicker than I had remembered on these 2 nines, although several
of them had sandy patches on them.
Martin Todd, Niall Stuart, Ken
Hole & Alan Sanders.
We breezed round the front in just over 2 hours but when
we arrived at the tee on South 1 there was a five-ball just hitting off.
After waiting about 15 minutes we played our tee shots and as we walked up
the fairway a course Marshall drove up and said something to our caddies &
then shot ahead and spoke to the group in front. Shortly after that the
five-ball disappeared and we suspect that they had started on the wrong tee
and had gone back to the correct one. The “road” was now clear so we
continued on and managed to complete the full round in four hours & twenty
minutes.
Several golfers took a liking to the course on the day and none more so than
John Pierrel who won the A Division with a terrific 42 points. John was one
of my playing partners and played some excellent golf shooting a 77 gross.
In second place came the 3 handicapper Mike Allidi who shot a gross 73 for
his 38 points and Mike “Hunter” Gosden came third with 37 points.
Commiserations went to Bob Akapita who scored 36 points but he did win a
golf ball for playing to his handicap or better & not finishing on the
podium.
Lindsay Slender has been spotted frequently headed up third road with his
golf bag over his shoulder and obviously has benefitted from the practice as
he scored 40 points and won the B Division. In second place came Patrick
Poussier with a fine 39 points and Bent Agerbo was third with 32 points.
The Growling Swan NAGA Award (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score
on the day) was won by Seesa Phompinmon.
Division A (0-16)
1st John Pierrel (11) 42pts
2nd Mike Allidi (3) 38pts
3rd Mike Gosden (13) 37pts
Division B (17+)
1st Lindsay Slender (26) 40pts
2nd Patrick Poussier (22) 39pts
3rd Bent Agerbo (20) 32pts
Near Pins: E5 – Mike Gosden, S4 – Keith Buchanan
Long Putts: E9 – John Pierrel, S9 – Geri Crilly
Thursday, July 24, Burapha – Stableford
It was time for our monthly visit to the classy Burapha Golf
Course to take advantage of their special Sports Day rate and its popularity
showed as we had an excellent field of 28 signed up to play.
As we assembled at The Growling Swan prior to departure there were many
welcomes handed out including Paul Sharples back from Oman for some R & R,
Glen Henriksen also on a break from his work at Barrow Island off the coast
of Western Australia, Andrew Purdie from Brisbane, Neil Skilton from his
travels and James Artura from Massachusetts, New York. It was sadly time to
bid farewell to Bent Agerbo who was returning to Denmark after his 3 week
bi-annual trip to Pattaya.
Everyone was on time so our 2 mini vans departed the GS 3 minutes ahead of
schedule and after just 30 minutes we arrived at the golf course to find
that it was not overly busy. After a leisurely check in we presented
ourselves to the Starter who informed us that we would be playing the A & B
nines and would be able to tee off somewhat ahead of schedule.
We were soon called to the A1 tee and our first four-ball got away 16
minutes before our booked tee time. The weather was great, not too hot with
a nice breeze and the golf course was in great shape as ever with lush
fairways and beautifully prepared greens. There were groups ahead of us but
we never really caught them up and our first nine took just one hour and
fifty minutes. The good pace continued through the second nine and we
completed a very enjoyable round of golf with terrific company in three
hours and fifty five minutes.
Martin “Toddy” Todd was the winner in A Division with 35 points, 1 point
ahead of the consistent John Pierrel in second place and Neil Skilton
finished third with 32 points.
There was some tremendous scoring in B Division with veteran Ken Hole
winning on 44 points, just 1 point ahead of Bent Agerbo in second spot and
Bob Akapita was third with 34 points.
In Division C it was Alan “Colonel” Sanders who took out first place with a
fine 38 points and with 2 golfers on 35 points a count back was required
which resulted in Tom “TC” Cotton (17 point back nine) finishing second from
Geri Crilly (16 point back nine) in third spot.
The Growling Swan NAGA Award was won by Niall Stuart and he accepted the
award like the good sport that he is and wore the red cap for a while in the
bar afterwards.
Division A (0-12)
1st Martin Todd (8) 35pts
2nd John Pierrel (11) 34pts
3rd Neil Skilton (7) 32pts
Division B (13-21)

Pelly & Graham pair up for Burapha victory
PSC golf from the Outback Golf Bar
Bob Lindborg with Fon, his caddie and
playing partner at Burapha.
Monday, July 21, Burapha –
Stableford
Ten teams played a 2-person better-ball stableford event on
the C and D loops at Burapha today, being the second of our monthly
series of events to encourage caddies to partake; both John O’Keefe and
Bob Lindborg partnered their respective caddies, Dang and Fon. They
didn’t make the podium but they all thoroughly enjoyed themselves both
partnerships finishing with a tally of 37pts.
The team of Dennis Pelly and Alex Graham, which was only put together at
the last moment, came out winners with 44pts, from Burapha regulars
Jimmy Little and Bob Finley on 43. Recently arrived from New Zealand,
Dion Lane teamed with up with good friend and fellow countryman John Low
to come third with 42pts, which included four birdies from Dion! In
fourth were Sven Lund and Ken Young with 41pts who had never played
together before, so well done you two.
1st Dennis Pelly & Alex Graham 44pts
2nd Bob Finley & Jimmy Little 43pts
3rd Dion Lane & John Low 42pts
4th Svenn Lund & Ken Young 41pts
Tuesday, July 22, Khao Kheow - Stableford
We had a turn-out of 7 players today as one of the Kiwi boys
didn’t hear his alarm going off so he missed his minibus.
The car park was empty when we arrived and the course seemed very quiet
but, and there is always a ‘but’, we ended up following two five-balls
and a four-ball so the time to go round was about 4½ hours, a little bit
too long in my book but never mind, as what else have you got planned on
a golf day.
We played the B and C loops with ‘lift, clean and place’ on the fairways
due to heavy rain the previous day, however, the course was generally ok
but the greens were very slow and it looked like some of had some kind
of disease.
There were no ‘2’s.
1st Suzi Lawton (24) 37pts
2nd Geoff Christie (05) 36pts
Wednesday, July 23, Laem Chabang – Stableford
Four groups played the C and B nines of the renowned Jack
Nicklaus local course, Laem Chabang, which just happens to be extremely
well priced at the moment whilst renovations to the club house and
locker rooms are carried out. This magnificent course is offering golf
for 2050 baht all up every weekday until October and the Outback has
bookings here nearly every Wednesday.
There were no ‘2’s, so we had two divisions - Tony Garnett had a
fantastic 40pts to win Div B from Greg Hill (32) and Tim Knight came
third on c/b with 29pts, whilst the top Div was won by Geoff Christie
with 35pts on c/b over Peter Nixon, with John Low a close third on 34.
Div A (0–14)
1st Geoff Christie (05) 35pts
2nd Peter Nixon (11) 35pts
3rd John Low (13) 34pts
Div B (15+)
1st Tony Garnett (15) 40pts
2nd Greg Hill (17) 32pts
3rd Tim Knight (26) 29pts
Friday, July 25, Green Valley - Stableford
We travelled to our regular Green Valley Friday venue today
with a good turnout of 23 golfers, or was it 22 and a half as one was
nearly asleep and certainly not fit for golf after a heavy night out?
We teed off 10 minutes early on a bright sunny day; the greens hadn’t
totally recovered from their recent dressing and some of them were a
little bit untrue, particularly on the front nine.
As we were waiting to tee off, the starter noticed that a couple of
players were not wearing collared shirts and kindly pointed out that all
players should be correctly attired and next time they either change or
don’t play. Come on guys you wouldn’t forget your etiquette at home so
please do not here.
The day’s top score of 40pts came in Div B, recorded by Waldo from Gerry
Roche on 37 and Andy Makara edging out Bob Mattes on c/b for third
place, both on 35. The scoring in Div A wasn’t quite so good with
Svenn’s 36pts being enough to win from Dennis Pelly and John Low, each
having 33.
On a final note we have a health warning for you, much to the amusement
of many back at the bar, when they heard the story the following day.
Please do not take the bar’s Tuk-a-taas home with you, which are
currently plastic bracelets often worn by girls, that represent a drink
paid for on the day, as this could get you into serious trouble from a
loved one, as one of our customers discovered later that night.
There were only two ‘2’s, from Greg Hill (8th) and Svenn Lund (12th).
Please also note that the August Medal has been postponed until Friday
8th.
Div A (0–17)
1st Svenn Ole Lund (13) 36pts
2nd Dennis Pelly (13) 33pts
3rd John Low (13) 33pts
Div B (18+)
1st Stephen Blazsanyik (20) 40pts
2nd Gerry Roche (19) 37pts
3rd Andy Makara (23) 35pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from Sukhumvit
Road along Soi Siam Country. Call Jack on 081 578 1956.

Finlay finds his groove at Green Valley
PSC golf from the Billabong Golf Bar
Bob Finley and ‘Orn’
Tinpranee.
Wednesday, July 23, Green Valley -
Stableford
A very Green Valley was the place to be today, with high cloud
and a little sun it was just great conditions for golf, as long as you have
the ability that the scribe lacks that is.
One of our golfers had to withdraw today due to an injury to his arm that
was caused by a golf ball hitting it. The ball in question was actually his
own as his shot hit a tree and rebounded back at him, and he was somewhat
fortunate that it hit his arm and not his face. We hope the pain goes away
soon Jim.
The course as usual was in grand condition, and the greens were wonderful.
The scores were both good and bad but coming in fifth place was Roger Ison
with 37 points, losing out on fourth place on a count back to Auke on the
same score. David Lusha took third with 38 points, second went to Jittina
Tinpranee (Orn) with a great 40 points, but taking the top spot was Bob
Finley with a fantastic 41. A great round of golf mate well done.
There were only three ‘2’s today coming from Peter LeNoury, Eng Cotterell
and Owen Walkley.
Friday, July 25, Plutaluang – Team Scramble
What a day out at the Navy, with 13 groups and a two-tee start we
were all away by 10 o’clock, but someone in the field lost a few fairways as
the last group took 5 hours to get around. But it was a great day out with
the scores being divided by only 6 shots overall. This tournament is getting
so popular we will have to get a two-tee start every time.
Paul, Geoff, Simon, Paul, Eddy
and Dave after the Scramble at Plutaluang.
The defending champions were the first off on the South
course full of confidence and bravado, but everyone was out to get their
share of glory, and with the Courtyard Cavaliers out to regain their status
as the true champions it was going to be a good day out.
Paul Hack brought along two teams to have a go at the prizes but alas they
fell short of glory by a mere shot. The team from the Players Lounge - Eddy
Beilby, Simon Philbrook, Paul Bourke and Paul Greenaway came third with 59.1
while in second were the defending champions of John Player, Sel Wegner,
Wayne Cotterell and his lovely wife Eng with a score of 58.9. But the
Courtyard Boys did it again with the help of Botswana Dave Done, the big
hitter who hit most of the par fives in two, with a score of 58.2.
A very successful day out and a lot of fun, scrambles are a good way to
bring everyone together for a good time out. The next one is on the last
Friday of August if you are interested in joining us for a game.
Note: The Billabong is situated just off Siam Country Club Road
looking straight down Lake Mabprachan. Give Bob a call on 082 204 3411 if
you are looking for a game.

Crystal Bay – nice, but those greens?
The Pattaya Golf Society at The Elephant Bar
1st Anders Haglund (14) 36pts
T2nd Phil Carter (13) 34pts
T2nd Mike Marshall (15) 34pts
Three groups from the Pattaya Golf Society ventured up Highway Three
to play Crystal Bay on Monday 21 July. After being allocated C and A
nines, the first group got away early on a course far from busy.
The PGS has not had Crystal Bay on its rota for some time, due to
the standard of the greens encountered on our last visit. Following
some positive feed-back from what we thought were reliable sources,
we were keen to get this otherwise popular course back on our
schedule. Unfortunately, whilst the fairways and general layout is
good, those putting surfaces are still sub-standard.
Perhaps that part-explains why the winning scores, often around 40
points on this course, were today more modest. In second-equal place
were two visitors from Australia, Phil Carter and Mike Marshall,
both playing their first round with us this trip. In first place,
playing in only his second round with the PGS was another newcomer,
Anders Haglund, this time from Sweden. It is nice to see our PGS
regulars doing all they can to make the recent arrivals feel so
welcome!
The lucky beer draw went to Toshihiro Aoki. The Booby Bevy went to
Geoff Reynolds following his, to some, dubious explanation of
discovering a Thai pro-shop with no balls.
There were two ‘2’s today, C4 – Anders Haglund, and C7 – Erik
Anttonen.
A special mention goes to both Phil and Mike, who along with two of
their peers, all volunteered shots from their handicap following
discussion about recent changes to how Golf Australia (GA) now
administers its handicaps.
Other Pattaya golf societies really do need to appraise themselves
of the changes brought in by GA in January of this year. Not to do
so may see visitors from Australia unwittingly provide an inflated
handicap.
Green Valley – A lovely walk in the park.
1st Tom Murphy (20) 42pts
2nd David Thomas (10) 38pts
T3rd Phil Carter (13) 34pts
T3rd Larry Slattery (18) 34pts
T3rd Murray Edwards (21) 34pts
Four groups from the Pattaya Golf Society made the short 40-minute
trip down Highway 36, to the Rayong Green Valley turnoff. After
paying a green-fee/caddie fee of 1350B (walking), the first of our
playing groups were at the starting tee some 20 minutes early. It
was only after they had teed off that a four-ball belonging to “Mr
Mike” turned up to claim their rightful spot on the tee. The starter
had mistakenly believed our first group belonged to Mr Mike. TiT!
May pen rai.
Green Valley was in its usual very good condition; the fairways
invariably offered a good lie and the bunkers were superbly
presented, the compact sand offering the chance to play genuine
attacking shots. The greens were perhaps over-watered in that any
high approach shot stopped dead in its own significant indentation.
This meant that many putting surfaces wore the scars of pitch-mark
repair that had left many bald spots. A minor point in the overall
context of things – a great course combined with superb weather made
for a lovely walk in the park.
Today’s scoring showed just two players under par, one significantly
so. This player, Tom Murphy, a visiting Aussie playing with the PGS
for the first time, had the sort of round we all dream about. “Yeah
right” I hear you doubting Thomas’ intone. But in this case, the
player, when registering with the IPGC, had supplied a hard-copy
printout of his Golf Australia handicap, complete with details of
his last 20 rounds. Tom’s superb winning round was deservedly
applauded by all at the presentation.
A warm welcome was extended to new IPGC members, Dianne and the
aforementioned Tom Murphy, from Queensland, Australia. It was Dianne
who received the day’s Booby Bevy, in part a welcome but also to
ensure she didn’t feel left out, given her other half had swept up
the day’s big prize.
There were three ‘2’s today; two by Phil Carter on holes 5 and 16,
and one by Jon Batty on 12.
A great day’s golf played on an excellent course in superb weather.
Can’t get better than this, can it?
Pattavia – best VFM golf in Pattaya
1st Tom Murphy (20) 38pts
2nd Mike Marshall (15) 37pts
3rd Erik Anttonen (9) 36pts
4th Takeshi Hakozaki (9) 33pts
Friday 25 July saw the Pattaya Golf Society take a good turnout of
six groups up the 331 to the much-improved Pattavia Century Golf
Club. Golfers past would recall the name Century Conburi, Pattavia’s
predecessor.
The course, benefiting from significant sponsorship from Chang, has
had a facelift that redefines the word facelift. In short, both the
course and clubhouse have gone from downright ugly to absolutely
stunning. And the current promotion price of 850B green-fee
caddie-fee represents the best value-for-money golf deal going.
Whilst the course layout is testing, the real challenge starts on
the greens. Many of the day’s pin placements were on slopes where
the grain followed the gradient. With grain having such influence on
speed of putt, it was not too difficult for a gently-stroked
four-footer shaving the hole, to finally come to rest some 15 feet
away. In stark contrast, the return putt, uphill and into the grain,
had to be hit firmly to have any chance.
Today the Pattaya Golf Society welcomed back old friends; Steve
Jones from the UK, and Tim Dale from WA, Australia. It also said
farewell to Erik Anttonen, Finland, Willie Barbour, England, and
three Aussie visitors from WA; Phil Carter, Mike Marshall and Dick
Batson.
Today’s field size warranted four podium places, and with the course
playing tough, each one of them deserved their rewards. In-form
winner, Tom Murphy, enjoyed his second win in as many starts, whilst
Mike Marshall had his best round this trip. PGS regular Erik
Anttonen made it three golfers who matched or bettered par; an
excellent performance given today’s pin-placements.
There were two ‘2’s, from Erik Anttonen on 4, and Tom Murphy on 17.
Back at the Elephant Bar, the Booby Bevy went to the deserving John
O’Sullivan who managed to lose his keys – house and car – meaning he
had to organise a break-in to obtain a back-up set. He later
discovered where they had gone – to the bottom of his golf bag.
Perhaps the Booby Bevy combined with the free meal, which is always
provided to the golfers, helped a little.

Good scores hard to come by
Travellers Rest Golf Group
(From left) Laurie Bevan and Andy Rich.
Andy Rich
Don’t ask me why because I don’t know, but all this week’s
winning scores were remarkably ordinary. The weather was fine, the
courses were all in great condition as usual, and yet no one came close
to bettering their handicap. The only good thing was that nobody
dominated the leaderboards this week and all the prizes were shared
around which pleased most people.
Monday, July 21, Treasure Hill - Stableford
On Monday the TRGG group headed off to Treasure Hill, which
most people find to be a very tough golf course and on this day it was
no exception. The whole field struggled to get the better of it (the
course) and in the end all failed miserably.
Jim Cooper made the best of a bad job and finished in the lead on 31
points, with Daryl Ottaway and Derek Thorogood in close attendance
behind.
1st Jim Cooper (14) 31 pts
2nd Daryl Ottaway (5) 30 pts
3rd Derek Thorogood (15) 29 pts
Wednesday, July 23, Greenwood – Stableford
It was off Greenwood (C and A courses) on Wednesday and most
players like this place as it is a forgiving course with mostly true
greens to putt on. This was not the case on Wednesday however.
The scoring drought continued and it required two 29 handicappers to
show the better golfers how to amass enough points to win a competition.
Laurie Bevan used all his shots to good effect and came home in the lead
on 33 points and was followed in by big Seamus Farrell in second place
while Aussie chef Bob Cannon cooked up a round good enough for third
place.
1st Laurie Bevan (29) 33pts
2nd Seamus Farrell (29) 31pts
3rd Robert Cannon (19) 30pts
Friday, July 25, Mt. Shadow - Stableford
The TRGG made a welcome return to Mountain Shadow on Friday
and I am happy to report that I, your golf correspondent, was more
pleased than most as I won. In what turned out to be the closest finish
of the week I just about got my large proboscis in front at the end and
pipped Derek Thorogood on count back. Charlie Cox was only one shot
behind in third place.
1st Andy Rich (20) 34pts
2nd Derek Thorogood (15) 34pts
3rd Charlie Cox (17) 33pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like
to play a round of golf with the TRGG, please phone Fergus Brennan on
086 056 7019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your
name to the weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.
