Tourism leaders plan ‘domestic MICE mart’
Mayor Itthiphol
Kunplome (center left) and Nopparat
Methawikulchai (center right) director if the
Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau
preside over the opening ceremony.
Jetsada Homklin
Representatives from more than 20
tourism organizations brainstormed ideas on how
to revive the business-convention business in
Pattaya following May’s military coup.
Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome and Thailand Convention
and Exhibition Bureau director, Nopparat
Methawikulchai, opened the July 4 workshop at
the Royal Cliff Beach Resort’s Pattaya
Exhibition and Convention Hall.
Associations covering Thai hotels, airlines,
event management, conventions and more attended
the session, reviewing plans to bring meeting,
incentive, convention and exhibition buyers to
Pattaya for a “domestic MICE mart.”
The market would distribute information on MICE
services and organize activities for travel
buyers and sellers in hopes of bringing
conventions and meetings to Pattaya.
TCEB officials said any MICE strategy should
cover five objectives: restoring confidence,
promoting the Thai market, increasing
international competitiveness, public
sponsorship and international marketing.
Plans for restoration of the MICE industry and
the domestic MICE mart will be presented to the
National Council for Peace and Order which had
made the meeting sector a cornerstone of its
plans to revive tourism in the kingdom.

Bangkok vows to reclaim top tourist destination title
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is
trying to restore confidence to reclaim its role
as the top tourist destination title from Kyoto,
Japan.
Bangkok Deputy Governor Amorn Kitchawengkul said
Bangkok lost its top tourist destination
championship to Kyoto and fell to the third
position (in Asia - and out of the top 10 in the
world) in a survey by the Travel + Leisure
magazine this year because of continuing
political demonstrations.
Bangkok’s city hall will discuss efforts to
restore confidence among tourists with operators
of five-star hotels whose client numbers have
dropped by half, he said.
The BMA will join with concerned organizations
in the government and private sectors to restore
confidence. It will explain Thailand’s local
situations to participants in international
conferences in Bangkok including those in the
International Publishers Association Congress
that was postponed from last year to September
this year due to the political situation, the
3rd Lower Mekong Tourism City Mayors’ Summit
this November and the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM)
next February.
In addition, city hall will organize activities
to promote tourism, especially annual activities
in the winter including music-in-the-park and
fashion street events. It will also organize
food festivals because Thailand is well-known
for its food.
Such activities are likely to woo tourists back
to Bangkok, Amorn said. (MCOT)
