Hopefully his letter
will have some effect
Editor;
Re: An open letter to the ambassadors of nations represented in Thailand and
the international media (PM Mailbag Friday, 20 June 2014) - This man is one
of the most respected businessmen in Bangkok. Arriving in Thailand aged 14 &
educated at Bangkok’s International School, at age 17 he entered the
advertising business and ventured on to other fields.
In 1978 he borrowed $1200 and started Minor International Pcl. This company
is now one of the largest hospitality & leisure companies in South East
Asia. Off shoots of this company include Minor Food, Minor Fashions and
about 30 other companies. Book a hotel room, eat a doughnut, or buy your
wife new lipstick, he figures in it somewhere.
Minor group employs thousands of Thais, and its associated companies
thousands more. (Not to mention those in other countries.) It is in his best
interest and those of his shareholders to paint a pretty picture of
Thailand. Over the last 6 months things have been grim in the tourist
industry and hopefully his letter will have some effect on governments
warning their citizens of the dangers that may exist. However, like you
Bill, they also have a “duty of care”.
Best wishes to you and I wish that carpet had been a 2-seater.

No violence,
no media
coverage abroad
Editor;
Re: An open letter to the ambassadors of nations represented in Thailand and
the international media (PM Mailbag Friday, 20 June 2014) - I have to say
that here in the UK, as far as the media’s concerned, unless there’s
violence involved the media isn’t interested. All mention of the situation
in Thailand has dried up on the news; unlike Iraq.

Very bad practice
Editor;
Re: Cable wires burn, but authorities pay no mind (PM Friday, 20 June 2014)
- They mix up and bundle all different types of wires which is very
dangerous. Kilovolt power is wrapped around cable lines and phone lines.
Very bad practice and against the law in many countries that have
installation codes.

It’s that quadrennial time again
Editor;
April is the time to pack up and head out of Thailand. This is the month of
Songkran. A time to stay away from entertainment areas and head to your
wife’s village where you will be assaulted with a “sprinkle” of water and a
dab of powder.
This year June is the time to stay away from the bars, etc., as it is the
time for the World Cup (soccer). I can not see myself attempting to enjoy a
quiet (?) drink while grown men wearing their teams jerseys with their
hero’s number on the back shout and scream at a TV screen & calling the
referee all sorts of names. How lucky am I that my ancestor stole that loaf
of bread and was transported to the colonies. Else I may have inherited the
mind set of the “bulldog breed”.
Now I must own up to being a hypocrite. Wednesday the 18th is the “state of
Origin” Rugby League game and I will stay in and watch it alone. No
screaming at the telly. (Except at half time, when the ads seem endless.) I
could head off to one of the Aussie bars here but there are some Aussies who
never made the transition and still have the herd mentality. (Looks like the
song “I’ll never walk alone” does not apply to me.)

No real will at City Hall
Editor;
Re: Pattaya officials claim progress in resolving Beach Road illegal parking
- Pattaya Mail (PM Friday, 20 June 2014) - There is no real will by City
Hall to improve the situation. I would give all the car and motorbike
renters and all others in the area 2 days notice that Beach Road will be
cleared and then send down a couple of bulldozers and sweep the lot away. A
convoy of heavy lorries could take away the debris. That would do it! But
no, it will never happen. It’s like the south side of Pattaya Tai, where the
vendors have stolen the pavement from the city and people can hardly walk
there. And if motorbikes are parked in the road you have about half a metre
of space to walk if you are lucky. This is Pattaya. This is in shambles!

Food sellers causing rat problem
Editor;
Re: Beach Road rat race continues (PM Friday, 20 June 2014) - Rat (problems)
are created by food street sellers washing their equipment into surface or
rain water drains, rather than sewage drains. It is an obvious fact, one
that London found in year 1600 when rats decimated the population with
bubonic plague... Identical to the food sellers in Pattaya.

Move the
garbage bins
Editor;
Re: Beach Road rat race continues (PM Friday, 20 June 2014) - If all Beach
Road shops would stop putting their huge garbage containers on the beach
promenade where they stay most of the day and night, surely there would not
be so many rats.

Why put something in your lungs that doesn’t belong?
Editor;
Re: No One is dying from second hand smoke (PM Mailbag Friday, 30 May 2014)
- Why would you put something in your lungs that doesn’t belong there?
Anyone with any amount of common sense must be able to see that human beings
didn’t evolve breathing cigarette smoke laced with addictive ingredients.
Hey, if you want to smoke it’s OK with me. But how dare you put that crap in
the air where others are forced to inhale it. It should be a crime.

Keep an eye on residency status
Editor;
Re: Australian aged pensioners leaving to live overseas (PM Mailbag Friday,
20 June 2014) - Mr Craney indeed needs to keep an eye on his residency
status for age pension purposes. Regular returns to Australia and a
permanent address there could be critical. Better to fix it now than try to
find somewhere to live in an expensive country when you are over 65.

Bring in the cats
Editor;
Re: Beach Road rat race continues (PM Friday, 20 June 2014) - Rats carried
the flea that carried bubonic plague. Fortunately now a treatable illness,
but I would suggest an application of cats to the problem. With a rich food
source they would surely stay on hand and control the problem.
