A new page at Silky Oak
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
It was “Millionaires’ Golf” again as the
Pattaya Golf Society visited an empty Silky Oak on Monday, 17th February to
play a stableford competition on the enigmatic course. It was in fine
condition but the greens had been unevenly sanded and were therefore tough
to judge.
The two flights, cut at seventeen and under, made a good fist of things
however and in the second flight Martin Hennessy finished in third place
with 29 points on the eve of his departure back to Ireland. In second place
was Mr Len with 31 points, only one behind the flight winner Tony Browne on
32. How he rued the three-putts which had blighted his card.
In the top flight Alan Flynn, Mike Earley and Ian Rowson all shared second
place with 37 points but the winner was Ken Page, setting a PB for Pattaya
golf, with a splendid 41 points.
Dave Moriarty and Phil “PJ” Mitchell both recorded birdie ‘2’s on the fifth
and Larry Slattery’s luck saw no bounds as his non-winners’ card was pulled
out for the fourth time in two weeks giving him another very lucky cool
beer, courtesy of Rabbi.
It had been a good start to another golfing week for the popular Soi Buakhao
based group.
Log jam at Khao Kheow
The Pattaya Golf Society was represented at Khao Kheow on Wednesday, 19th
February by its largest field of the year so far that turned out to play a
stableford event on the B and A nines, which were in good condition but with
slow greens.
The two flights were cut at fifteen and under with those in the top flight
playing from the longer yellow tees. Across the board scores were
competitive with only one shot covering the first six places, as in the
second flight Larry Slattery made third place with 34 points. The joint
winners were Larry Ang and Murray Edwards both with 35 points.
In the yellow flight three golfers shared top spot with 35 points, namely
John Chelo, Rick Schramm and Khun Arai.
The ‘2’s pot was shared by David Thomas, Chris Smith, Martin Grimoldby, Paul
Sturgeon, Henry Mah and Murray Edwards whilst Richard Dobson again enjoyed
the Booby Bevy for another lacklustre performance with a 15-4 split.
The day had been splendidly competitive at Khao Kheow.
Emerald, Page 2
On Friday, 21st February the Pattaya Golf Society visited Emerald in Ban
Chang to play a stableford event on the popular course. A sharp shower just
before the start almost put the competition in doubt but when it began to
ease the group teed off with the local ‘lift and place’ rule applied. The
large field was divided into two flights with the cut at seventeen and under
and the course was damp and the greens were slow to start with.
Emerald is always a tough test of golf and a course on which Lady Luck plays
a very active role, generally keeping scores at a respectable level. Today
was no different with the second flight seeing Larry Ang take third place
with 31 points, just one behind the second placed man Rod Stevens. The
flight winner on his final round this trip was Canadian Harry Lankoff and
his 34 points marked his best round in a few years of playing with the
group.
In the top flight Mike Earley tied with Chris Smith on 31 points for third,
the latter firing the day’s best gross figures of 78. In second place was
Larry Slattery with 33 points but the winner was Ken Page, repeating his
feat of Monday, this time 36 points giving him the victory.
The ‘2’s pot was shared by Wichai Tananusorn, Ian Rowson, Vic Woolton and
Dave Plaiter, the latter’s being an eagle as a sixty yard wedge on the
sixteenth unerringly found the bottom of the hole.
The Booby Bevy went to John Chelo who suffered an injury on the fifth and
therefore “en-arred” on a course he enjoys. Rabbi’s consolation beer went to
Paul Sturgeon.
Thus another successful and busy week with the PGS concluded, with the
promise of more to come after a weekend’s rest.

42 points to top the flight and the day.
Irishman David Dunne continued to have his way with Pattaya as he made his

Eric Gobert led the premier flight home with a creditable even par round.
Kevin Rogers and Pat Duane had to be separated by a count back, with Kevin

Nadine Goyons was the toast of the bar as she took B Flight with 33 points.
It was a tight pack that followed Nadine home as Jim Reilly lifted the

points; Pierre ‘the Magician’ Bietry waved his magic putter to make Freddy
‘the quite one’ Starbeck and the colorful Walter Baechli disappear
Kevin Rogers was the delighted recipient of the 2’s pot - a missing person

JP Maffray, Maurice Goyons, Jim Lanzo and Jim Elphick, who all made strong
bids to have their names in the title, swept the day’s competition as all
were co-men of the match with 37 points each. JP Maffray was the top dog in
the senior circuit and Bruce Anderson stood on the second step on the podium
with 35, as John Stewart occupied the lower podium spot.
Maurice Goyons, fed up with seeing Nadine‘s name in the paper all the time,
put his foot down to take the B Flight gold with a count back win over Jim
Lanzo. John Stewart filled the flight with 34 points.
Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick joined his 37 point mates as he was stood atop the
C Flight podium. Rudi Eggimann stood on the middle step with his 34 and
there was no chivalry shown by the omnipresent Irishman Fergus O’Brien
(lady’s before gentlemen) as he edged Ayoko Pueschi off the podium on count
back.
JP Maffray, Maurice Goyons and Jim Lanzo shared the 2’s pot.
Thursday, Feb. 20, Mountain Shadow – Stableford
A Flight
1st Pierre Bietry (16) 35pts
2nd John Stewart (8) 33pts
3rd Billy Briton (17) 33pts
B Flight
1st Tom Gorey (18) 36pts
2nd John Hartigan (22) 33pts
3rd Noel Masters (18) 32pts
A fair sized field, considering we are at the moment playing six days a week
(the one exception being Saturday), took on the toughest par 72 lay out
around - Mountain Shadow. The scores on the day reflected the difficulty of
a course that sports the toughest set of par fives around.
B Flight was won with a modest 36 points, which also proved to be the best
on the day, as Tom Gorey kept the Irish theme going. Co. Kerry man John
Hartigan threw his two pence worth in as he took the silver with 33 points
and this was one digit clear of Noël Masters.
Pierre ‘the magician’ Bietry stood on the top of the premier flight podium
with 35 points, this being Pierre’s third pay window visit this week.
Looking up at Pierre on the podium steps were John Stewart and County
Wicklow man Billy Briton, both locked on 33 point returns but John got to
stand nearest to Tom after the count back.
Pierre conjured up a 2 along with Billy Briton, Thierry Temime and Jim
Byrne.
Friday, Feb. 21, Pattavia Century – Stableford
A Flight

C Flight
1st Jim Elphick (21) 38pts
2nd Paul Gibson (28) 37pts
3rd John Heaney (21) 36pts
A perennial favourite, Pattavia Century was the site of Friday’s outing with
the red hot John Stewart firing a co-man of the match and top score in A
Flight 38 points. John was matched in C Flight by the ever-improving Jimmy
‘two shots’ Elphick. This was John’s fourth visit to you know where (talking
about you know who, he’s back in town so you have been warned). John was two
clear of Kevin Rogers as Dominic Downey closed the flight on35 points.
Skipping down to C Flight we saw Paul Gibson and John Heaney follow Jim up
the podium steps in one shot increments.
B Flight had the only count back of the day; Pen Caruthers and John Darby
tied on 37 points apiece but Pen’s fortune was to the dismay of John’s.
Rightly so, the final spot of the week went to a ‘Mick’ as Matt Cronin
closed the flight with a steady 35 points.
Dominic Downey, Jeff Horsfield, Pen Caruthers. Chris Barrett, Jim Bell and
John Heaney shared the 2’s pot.

Tuesday, Feb. 18, Pattaya Country
Club - Stableford
We were back at Pattaya Country Club
today after a very long absence and everyone was very pleased with the
noticeable improvements to the course. One man in particular was very
happy with it; Gerry Doyle made it look very easy by scoring forty four
points to be a clear winner. After that the scores were a lot more
modest with Joe McArdle, Don Byrne and George Cullen finishing in that
order on count back after they all recorded thirty-six points each. Joe
Cuddy completed the podium in fifth with thirty five.
Because of the number of ladies we had out we decided to do a separate
flight for them and this was won by Theresa Connolly with thirty three
points ahead of Pauline Byrne in second with twenty eight.
There were no ‘2’’s today.
1st Gerry Doyle (22) 44pts
2nd Joe McArdle (13) 36pts
3rd Don Byrne (16) 36pts

Thursday, Feb. 20, Pattavia Century
- Stableford
On Thursday we divided up our group
with some going to Pattavia and some going to Leam Chabang. Pattavia was
in very good condition but unfortunately the new club house is still not
ready. However everyone were very happy with it and we were very lucky
that we got around without any rain even though it looked like it a few
times.
Terry Kelly took the top spot with thirty eight points followed closely
by John Kelly with thirty seven. George Cullen was third with thirty
five and Paal Anderssen came fourth on thirty four.
We had five ‘2’s today from Joe McArdle (2), Paal Anderssen (2) and John
Fenwick.

Thursday, Feb. 20, Leam Chabang -
Stableford
Our second group went to Leam Chabang
today where they played the B and difficult C courses. While it was
raining heavily when we were leaving The Tara Court and some of our
players were having doubts about going, by the time we got to the golf
course it had stopped and it turned out a perfect day for golf, not too
hot.
Gilbert Brossnan was the man of the day winning with thirty five points
ahead of Andy Galvin in second and Joe Cuddy third.
There were no ‘2’s recorded here today.

Kubicki conquest continues
PSC golf from Café Kronborg
Richard Kubicki (left) and
Kaj Aabling (right) with Dave Richardson.
Monday, Feb. 17, Treasure Hill –
Stableford
We were off the first tee 20 minutes early
under sunny skies and with a nice breeze all day. The course was in good
shape with just a couple of the greens that were a bit scratchy.
Two flights today with the cut at handicap 20 and we managed to get
around in 4 hours and 10 minutes as 3-balls.
Richard Kubicki continued his fine form, running away with the A Flight
with 38 points. Leif Kirkgaard came in a distant second on a count back
from Peter Sindberg, both on 32 points each, and Arne Max Pedersen
placed fourth on a count back from Henning Olsen both on 26.
Kaj Abbling also had things his own way in the B Flight as his 39 points
was five clear of Steen Habsersaat in second while Elias Magnusson and
Mike Winfield took third and fourth places with 32 and 31 points
respectively.
Near pins went to Leif Kirkgaard and Arne Max Pedersen while the long
putt prizes were claimed by Peter Hammond and Richard Kubicki.
Thursday, Feb. 20, Plutaluang W & N -
Stableford
We arrived at the course today in a downpour
and the rain continued until almost the end of the round. The course was
very wet but otherwise in good shape with quickish greens. Due to the
wet conditions it was a 5 hour slog around the course.
We had two flights again today with the cut at handicap 20 and a full
set of pins.
Peter Sindberg won the A Flight with 35 points ahead of Henning Olsen in
second on 34 and then we had a four-way count back on 32 that saw Peter
Bygballe in third and Torbben Sorensen in fourth with Oddur Olafsso and
Leif Kirkgaard just missing out.
Peter Hammond won the B Flight with 34 points while Kaj Aabling took
second on 33 and Steenhabersaat placed third 32, one ahead of Eddie
Glinsek in fourth.
Near pin prizes were won by Peter Hammond, Torben Sorensen, Jens Madsen
and Peter Bygballe while the long putt awards went to Thorbjorn
Admunsden and Jan Lovgreen.

Scambler takes the win with hot back-nine
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Monday, Feb. 17, The Emerald - Medal
A large field of thirty two golfers dragged
themselves out of bed to be tested by this Nick Faldo designed course.
Unfortunately one of the group was taken ill before leaving the Ranch
which was cruelly put down to Buff’s breakfast and not a skinful the
night before.
John Hughes smiles at the
thought of his winnings.
Arriving at the course nobody was to
be seen on the first tee so we got away on time and after the first
couple of holes settled down to a good pace. Temperatures were hot and
humid under an overcast sky but a very welcome breeze was blowing
throughout the round.
The course was generally in good condition with fairways and greens
soft, although tee boxes were showing signs of very heavy usage. This is
one of the shorter tracks in the area of just over 6000 yards but it is
certainly not one of the easiest but still tends to be popular, with a
good selection of differing holes.
A Flight saw Tony Scambler hit a fine net 70 aided by 10 pars in his
last 11 holes, followed a shot behind by Colin (Michael Portillo) Greig
on net 71
In B Flight, Geoff Hart ran away with it with a one under par net 71
followed 4 shots behind by Skinny Newton, playing his last game before
returning to a wet and windy UK.
Best performance of the day though was by Gordon Melia who managed to
4-putt the 17th from 3ft, and in the process ruin his card with a 9.
A Flight
1st Tony Scambler (10) net 70
2nd Colin Greig (7) net 71
3rd Mark West (14) net 75
4th Geoff Parker (14) net 75
B Flight
1st Geoff Hart (24) net 71
2nd Blair Newton (26) net 75
3rd Jack Robertson (25) net 76
4th Ken Young (27) net 76
Near Pins: Paul Smith, Mike Gabe, Colin Greig and Mike Corner
Wednesday, Feb. 17, Treasure Hills - Rainbow
Stableford
For those of you not familiar with a rainbow
format it can make for some good tactical golfing, although a knowledge
of the course and tee position on the day is required. All golfers need
to take 6 tee shots from each of the reds, whites and blues (black in
this case), in whatever order they wish. Normally this should produce
some good scoring but today seemed to be an exception on this very long
and difficult track, with some very weird hole indexing not helping.
A smaller field than normal of fifteen golfers were up for the
challenge, which meant only one flight and the higher handicappers up
against the normal single figure bandits. Not a soul was seen on the
first tee and we got away early, with the first group finishing in 4
hours and lots of daylight left.
Fairways were in excellent condition, being liberally watered and
manicured, with the greens harder and drier. Tee boxes similarly were in
great knick and the only minor complaint would be swathes of very dry
grass off the fairways, water obviously concentrated where needed the
most.
Every time we come to this course there is maintenance of some sort
happening resulting in continual improvements. Fluffy grass around the
greens stopped a lot of inbound shots short, and hitting the greens
frequently resulted in not stopping on the dance-floor.
Best score of the day belonged to Bunkerboys champion Paul Smith, the
long course suiting his game, with a very good 37 points. Nobody else
came close to hitting par with Mark Stanley closest on 32 points and
Colin Greig and Peter Kelly separated by a count back for the minor
placings.
1st Paul Smith (4) 37pts
2nd Mark Stanley (8) 32pts
3rd Colin Greig (7) 31pts
4th Peter Kelly (12) 31pts
Near Pins: Jack Robertson, Paul Smith and Mark Stanley (2)
Friday, Feb. 21,
Mt. Shadow - Stableford
We had 22 players today and the course was in
good condition and quiet – the quickest round for several weeks in fact
and the first 3-ball was back in clubhouse in under 4 hours.
There was a very light sprinkling of rain as the final two groups
completed the last 2 holes.
Work is in evidence repairing bunkers with the course currently offering
probably the best value for money in terms of price and condition in the
area.
This is never an easy track but Mark Stanley in A fight bettered par
with 37 points, only to be eclipsed by John Hughes in B Flight who
amassed 39. The rest of the field trailed in but it was good to see Ian
Milne returning to playing after his recent hospitalization, just losing
on a count back to Bruce Gladden.
Only three 20+ handicappers present today so Geoff Parker squeezed into
B flight and third place behind the recently consistent Mike Corner.
A Flight
1st Mark Stanley (8) 37pts
2nd Bruce Gladden (13) 34pts
3rd Ian Milne (13) 34pts
B Flight
1st John Hughes (18) 39pts
2nd Mike Corner (19) 34pts
3rd Geoff Parker (14) 33pts
Near Pins: Mark Stanley, Bruce Gladden, Peter Kelly and Colin
Greig
Note: The Bunker Boys is a PSC affiliated golf society which now

Too much diet whiskey fills the bag
The Backyard Golf Society
We had another good turnout at the weekly Backyard
Golf Society outing at Emerald last Friday. ‘Michelle’ Chatt’s
revolutionary method of using beer bottle tops to pick the groups passed
its first test and wasn’t she a happy organizer during the post-game
discussions.
The winner of the main competition was ‘The Quiet Man’, winning by 1
from Russell ‘He’s a Victorian’. The near-pin prize was also won by
Russell.
Don ‘the Divorcer’s birdie on the 1st hole won him that skin plus the 3
rollovers from the previous week. Irish John won 7 skins, Russell won 2
and we have 8 rolled-over to next week’s game, so the 1st skin will be
well worth winning next Friday.
Some interesting talking points from the game: ‘The Victorian’ split his
ball in 2 on the 18th hole, had to take a penalty and thus lost out in
the main competition; Dan ‘the Diet Whiskey Man’ apparently had some
issue with the plumbing on his colostomy bag and had to take a
boy’s-room break every 3 holes. There were also concerns for Don ‘the
Divorcer’ (well known to take his time on every shot) on the 12th hole
where his playing partners – ‘The Quiet Man’ and Andy ‘The Deadliest
Catch’ Crabb – actually thought he had either gone to sleep over the
ball or had somehow altered the fabric of the universe and beamed over
to a parallel dimension. Fortunately ‘The Divorcer’ was just taking his
time and returned to the real world again.

Ebrahim & Rita shine at Eastern Star
PSC Golf from The Growling Swan
Rita Zoebelli, Dave Fletcher
& Ebrahim.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, Feb. 17, Eastern Star – Stableford
Monday we welcomed PSC President Tony Oakes
and a quality field of 18 other golfers for our trip to the challenging
Eastern Star Golf Course.
We managed to depart the GS five minutes ahead of schedule at 8.25 am &
headed south down Sukhumvit and after a fairly good run arrived at the
course 44 minutes later. Our allotted tee time was 10.33 am but as the
course was not too busy due to several Japanese golfers not showing up
we were invited to the first tee early and got our first group away 43
minutes ahead of schedule at 9.50 am.
The weather was hot and there was a fairly stiff breeze, which cooled
things down a bit and the golf course was in fairly good shape although
some of the fairways were hard and dry, but the greens were in good
shape albeit pretty slick at times. We proceeded at a fairly good pace
with the Pres hitting the ball out of sight from the tees and the very
enjoyable round of golf was all over in the reasonable time of four
hours & ten minutes.
Playing in the first group it was Ebrahim who had the outstanding round
of the day and won Division A with a fine 38 points. The consistent Gerd
Riedler finished second with 35 points and PSC President Tony Oakes was
third on 32 points.
Gary Monley, Alain Taddei,
Alan Sanders & Colm Mullen.
In Division B it was Rita Zoebelli who
got the chocolates and won with a fine 36 points, 3 points ahead of J C
Lhoste (18 point back nine) who got second place on a count back from
Colm Mullen (17 point back nine) in third spot.
Division A (0-16)
1st Ebrahim (16) 38pts
2nd Gerd Riedler (8) 35pts
3rd Tony Oakes (12) 32pts
Division B (17+)
1st Rita Zoebelli (25) 36pts
2nd JC Lhoste (23) 33pts
3rd Colm Mullen (18) 33pts
Near Pins: 3rd – Colm Mullen, 17th – Rita Zoebelli
Long Putts: 9th – Gerd Riedler, 18th – Max Bracegirdle
The Growling Swan NAGA Award (awarded to the golfer who has the worst
score on the day) was won by David Fletcher who accepted the award like
the good sport that he is.
Thursday, Feb. 20, Green Valley - Stableford
We had 37 starters for the very popular Green
Valley Golf Club and as we left the GS right on time at 8.30 am the
weather was not looking too flash, with drizzling rain that turned quite
heavy rain as we arrived at the course 39 minutes later. It was a hive
of activity as there were many golfers just hanging around waiting to
see what the weather was going to do and after a wait of about 40
minutes the rain eased a bit so we paid our money and made our way to
the first tee.
Our booked tee time was 10.19 am and even after the fairly big delay we
managed to get our first group away 1 minute ahead of our scheduled tee
time and we proceeded in drizzling rain. Arriving at the first green we
found it very wet and difficult to putt on of course but we managed to
somehow get through the puddles without too much drama.
Things did improve dramatically from then on as the rain stopped and the
course started to dry out very quickly with the greens just about normal
from the third on, although naturally slower than they usually are. The
golf course was of course very good despite the wet and we finished the
round in four hours & twenty minutes.
When I saw the scores starting to come in afterwards it was quite
apparent that a few golfers had reveled in the conditions as there were
some outstanding scores.
Division A was won by Colm Mullen with a fine 41 points and with 2
golfers on 35 points a count back was needed which saw Mike “Hunter”
Gosden (18 point back nine) finish second from Big Bill Steinman (17
point back nine) in third place, with Tom McMahon in fourth spot on 33
points.
The best score on the day was recorded by Alain “Inspector Clouseau”
Taddei whose 43 points made him the winner in B Division. Second place
went to Silvano Pizzato who had 39 points, 1 point ahead of Rita
Zoebelli in third place and Chris Allen was fourth with 34.
Division C was won by Alan “Colonel” Sanders with a fine 37 points and
in another count back with two golfers on 34 points it was Nolan
“No-one” Wise (15 point back nine) who finished second, with Sandy
“Cindy Lauper” Leiper (13 point back nine) in third place and Russell
Calcutt was fourth with 29 points.
Division A (0-18)
1st Colm Mullen (18) 41pts
2nd Mike Gosden (11) 35pts
3rd Bill Steinman (10) 35pts
4th Tom McMahon (17) 33pts
Division B (19-25)
1st Alain Taddei (19) 43pts
2nd Silvano Pizzato (23) 39pts
3rd Rita Zoebelli (25) 38pts
4th Chris Allen (22) 34pts
Division C (26+)
1st Alan Sanders (26) 37pts
2nd Nolan Wise (36) 34pts
3rd Sandy Leiper (33) 34pts
4th Russell Calcutt (36) 29pts
Near Pins: 4th – Mike Gosden, 9th – Ebrahim, 12th – Mashi Kaneta,
16th – Ebrahim
Long Putts: 9th - John Swanson, 18th – Alan Sanders
The Growling Swan NAGA Award was won by Gary Monley and Max then paraded

Edwards excels at Pattavia
PSC golf from Siam Country Resort
Tuesday, Feb. 18, Pattavia Century
- Stableford
Tuesday was a trip to Pattavia Century. The course
was in good shape and we played under clear skies with a light breeze,
so the scores were solid, if not spectacular. The exception to this may
well have been Bob Edwards (8), a 3 point winner with 39 points. George
Gamble (23) was next best with 36 points, after getting away to a good
start, turning with 20 before fading a little on the back 9.
Martin Hayes (left) with
Jeff Wylie.
A couple of points back on 34 were a
trio of players led by the returning Martin Hayes (14) with 19 on the
back 9, ahead of Jeff Wylie (7) with 17, while Yves Philibert (31) had
15.
Near pins went to Paddy, Martin & Bob completed his day out with 2.
Thursday, Feb. 20, Crystal Bay - Stableford
Crystal Bay was the venue for Thursday’s outing
with the B & C combination our allotted loop. Following several negative
reports in the media of late, there was some consternation today over
what the course condition would be, but some personal putting dilemmas
aside, the general consensus was the course was in decent shape.
They do have some sprinkler maintenance issues here, resulting in some
damp areas, but these could be fixed before a next visit. The greens
also suffer in comparison to days gone by, but are acceptable in their
current condition, with good shots holding the surface, although speeds
are a little inconsistent.
Jeff Wylie (7), despite getting off to a rocky start with “the easiest
shot in golf” (the 4th putt), was able to adjust before eventually
signing for 36 points, while in second spot was Martin Hayes (14) with a
repeat of Tuesday’s score, 34.
Near pins were spread around today, with Jeff, Martin, Paddy and Bob
hitting the target, while the latter 2 were able to convert for birdies.
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off Siam
Country Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn right
after 50 metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres along.
Golf from here is generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with the
Resort hosting prompt presentations on both days. As a PSC affiliated
venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies & seniors (>60s) who have
opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or
enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Eriksen a class apart at Khao Kheow
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Kim Danboise and Sugar Ray Handford.
Monday, Feb. 17, Burapha –
Stableford
24 Outbackers played the A and B course from the blue tees in overcast
and very humid conditions, making it very hot as the cloud cover burnt
off. There were a few grizzles about the length of the course on B as
the tees were as far back as possible, making the nine exceptionally
long.
We were joined by Ramsay Smith, who first played with the Outback a few
years back now and he brought along three mates, Rick Culley, Dave
Bramley and Dave Strang, who were having their first game with us, as
was South African Henrick van Joorsveld, so welcome to you all.
Jim Brackett made the most of his length off the tee to record the day’s
best score of 37pts to win the top division from Bob Finley (36); Rick
Culley beat Paul Bourke on c/ b to take third, both on 34.
Div B didn’t fare quite so well with the extra length of the course as
Ramsay Smith topped the scoring there with 34pts, from Kim Danboise (32)
and Ivan Plunkett beating Jimmy Little on c/b for third, both with 31.
Unusually there were no ‘2’s.
Div A (0-18)
1st Jim Brackett (9) 37pts
2nd Bob Finley (15) 36pts
3rd Rick Culley (14) 34pts
4th Paul Bourke (11) 34pts
Div B (19+)
1st Ramsay Smith (22) 34pts
2nd Kim Danboise (19) 32pts
3rd Ivan Plunkett (24) 31pts
4th Jimmy Little (19) 31pts
Wednesday, Feb. 19, Khao Kheow – Stableford
Three 3-balls and three 4-balls were the order of
the day at Khao Kheow, with the early tee time of 9.10, starting on the
B loop before progressing to A for our back nine. We were treated as
usual by the fine hospitality of the staff and the course remains in
great nick, even though the greens were perhaps a little slow as the
downhill putts didn’t go quite as far as one thought they would, making
it easy to leave them short.
With only two single figure handicappers in the 21 strong field the
division split was quite high at 18, and the yellow tees gave both
divisions the usual tough test. There was one player who stood head and
shoulders above the rest however as Peter Eriksen shot an excellent
gross 75 to register 39 stableford points off his 6 handicap, seven
clear of the only other low marker, Stuart Sinfield off of 5,who
returned a 32. Both Peter and Stuart played in the same group, as did
the third placed man Steve Plant, who had 31.
Div B was a revelation, with a name at the top that has not been seen
for quite some time as General Jack put a great back nine together to
score 22pts, to beat course specialist Suzi Lawton on count back with
‘only’ 19pts as they both finished on 35. Kim Danboise followed up his
second place at Burapha on Monday with another podium finish here, this
time third with 29.
There were two ‘2’s from Peter Erikson (B8) and Kim Danboise (A5).
Div A (0-18)
1st Peter Erikson (6) 39pts
2nd Stuart Sinfield (5) 32pts
3rd Steve Plant (13) 31pts
Div B (19+)
1st Jack Moseley (20) 35pts
2nd Suzi Lawton (29) 35pts
3rd Kim Danboise (19) 29pts
Friday, Feb. 21, Green Valley – Stableford
The first real rain of the year sent the majority
of the 36 starters back to the changing rooms as 20 left the course
after just a few holes, leaving only 16 finishers.
Surprising really, because the rain wasn’t really that heavy but it did
get cold which was not a lot of fun. The other thing which is not a lot
of fun is to be pushed into a six minute start time interval only to end
up with four groups standing on the second tee in the rain with nowhere
to shelter. However, someone has at last seen sense as we revert to a
more respectable 8 minute interval at the start of the low season (1st
April) when the course changes the first tee back to the current 3rd
hole, followed by the current 6th hole as the second.
The interesting thing is that the current 2nd hole will become the 18th,
making the course very similar to the original layout, when the
clubhouse was at the top of the hill. So why don’t they go the whole
hog; make the 6th the first and the 15th the tenth and put on a couple
of courtesy buses to get the walkers there, which would be paid for in
no time at all as players would be able to use the driving range
properly!
I see the old green complete with bunkers is still there when the second
used to be the par 5 (17th). Cut down a few trees and they could bring
back that as well, what a great hole that was!
As for today, Sugar ran away with the win to score a very fine 39pts
from Barry McIntosh on 34 and Kin Danboise (32) yet again, who recorded
his third podium finish out of three starts this week.
There were three ‘2’s from Sugar Ray Handford (4th), Steve Giles (12th)
and Barry McIntosh (16th), all of whom played in the same group.
1st Sugar Ray Handford (18) 39pts
2nd Barry McIntosh (20) 34pts
3rd Kim Danboise (19) 32pts
4th Stephen Mann (9) 31pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from Sukhumvit Road
along Soi Siam Country. Call Jack on 081 578 1956.

Flello coasts to victory at Lakeside
Jomtien golf with the IPGC
Pete Sumner with Miss Nut,
Terry Madsen and Tim Hake.
Monday, Feb. 17, Royal Lakeside –
Stableford
Despite the driving distance we had a surprising 39 players out today,
maybe enticed by the brilliant green fee the course was offering. The
layout here was in great condition and everyone enjoyed the round and so
we will be back here again in five weeks time.
Playing off the white tees today at 6,250 yards, the best score returned
came in division 3 with Randy Flello, playing off 21, winning with 40
points. Bryan Priestley took second on 37 and Jim Sims was third with
32.
Terry Madsen returned a fine 39 points to win division 1 and the tears
were out at the presentation as Chris Voller came in second with 38,
while Bryan Rought claimed third one point further back.
The division 2 winner today was Matti Pihlajisto with 39 points and Rudi
Schaefer beat Chris Slota on an 18/16 back nine count back for second
after they both came in with 35 points each.
Near pins were shared by John Marsh, Ted Moriss, Horst Starchl, Chris
Voller, Miss Nut, Finn Olsen, Rudi Schaefer and Howard Stanley.
Bryan Priestley birdied the 15th to take the ‘2’s pot in division 2.
Wednesday, Feb. 19, Plutaluang - Stableford
After a late cancellation from Crystal Bay, due to no caddies
being available, we luckily managed to get a game at Plutaluang on the
West and North courses with nine groups out.
Our Khao Yai organiser Tim Hake returned the best score of the day,
winning division 2 with 35 points, while Randy Flello, playing off 19
today, placed second with 34 and Chris Slota took third with 33.
Pete Sumner, playing off 8, topped division 1 with his 34 points and
Lindsay Phillips placed second one point behind while Iain Speirs beat
John Marsh on a 17/14 back nine count back for third after both came in
with 32 points.
Mauri Friman was the winner in division 3 with 34 points, two ahead of
‘Countback’ Burnie in second and four up on Roar Berger in third.
Near pins were claimed by Iain Speirs, Barry Stirling, Pete Sumner (2),
Tim Hake, Miss Nut and Harry Vincenzi (2).
Miss Nut birdied N6 to scoop the ‘2’s pot in division 2 and Iain Spiers,
Pete Sumner and Chris Voller split the division 1 purse.
Friday, Feb. 21, Eastern Star - Stableford
Heavy rain overnight here in Jomtien and as we departed for
Eastern Star the skies looked threatening in the Rayong area.
There were eleven groups out with the equal cut at 7-16, 17-20 and 21+
in division 3. All around the course the sky looked bleak and after 3
holes a light drizzle started which lasted for around 40 minutes, so on
the 7th tee we introduced the ‘pick, clean and place’ ruling for all the
following groups.
Arthur Hancock fared best in the conditions to win division 1 with the
best score of the day, 38 points. Bill Bertram took second on 35 and
Horst Starchl came in third with 33.
Harry Vincenzi topped the division 2 standings with 34 points and Jerry
McCarthy was second one point behind, with Walter Weber in third on 31.
A meager 28 points took the top podium position in division 3 for Joe
Kubon and after two months on the bench the organiser bounced back to
take second place, beating Magne Gunnarson 16/14 on the back nine after
both returned scores of 27.
Near pins went to Arthur Hancock (2), Wilf Latham, Horst Starchl, Frank
Kelly, Jarmo Sulovory, Harry Vincenzi and Walter Weber.
Harry Vincenzi birdied the 6th hole in division 2 and Chris Voller the
17th in division 1 for the only ‘2’s today in all of the groups.

It’s Barry ‘the Book’ for the Monthly Medal
PSC golf from The Golf Club
Phil Smedley with Barry
Tregurtha and Ian Brimble.
Steve Ellison
Monday, Feb. 17, Green Valley (white tees) –
Stableford
1st Muffy Kerr (12) 43pts
2nd Barry Tregurtha (18) 40pts
T3rd Alan Rothwell (6) 39pts
T3rd Ian Brimble (7) 39pts
T3rd Dave Mather (9) 39pts
First off, there has been a schedule change for March. The
Kabinburi/Kantary road trip has been changed to Soi Dao, still on the
13th and 14th. This is an overnighter with 2 green fees, hotel with
breakfast and a wine and cheese pool party as well for 2,900 baht. It’s
great fun so sign up soon as we only have 24 slots. If you have never
been to Soi Dao, it is a breathtaking golf course up in the cool
mountain air and just 3 hours down the road.
Now back to the golf and if it’s Monday it must mean Green Valley. Once
again we were oversold, overbooked and underpaid but that didn’t stop us
and the 40 brave souls who joined the comp. As you can see from the
leaderboard, we had some great golfers out there today.
A pretty Pattavia is back on
track.
At a 3-way tie for third, and all at 39 by the way,
we had Alan Rothwell, Liverpool supporter Ian Brimble, and your man from
Newcastle, Dave Mather. A stroke ahead and hitting that magic number 40
was our favourite Bookmaker to the Stars, Mr. Barry Tregurtha.
But it was darksider Muffy Kerr (you know, Ty and Jason’s Dad) who must
have thought it was a cakewalk out there today as a magnificent 43
points took him to the top. That’s a great round of golf and sure to cut
the old handicap, eh? Well played Muffy, it must have been that
LoudMouth outfit that did the trick!
Wednesday, Feb. 19, Pattavia Century (white tees) –
Stableford
1st Alan Rothwell (6) 36pts
2nd Reg Glass (15) 34pts
3rd Marcel De Kind (30) 33pts
A cool but overcast day was in store for us and that adds up to perfect
golfing weather. It is still a tough final 8 kilometers to get to this
course, but what a great track to find when you do finally arrive. The
greens here were running around 10-11 on the stimpmeter and many greens
were crowned to make for a difficult round of golf. That’s OK, we love a
challenge so let’s get on with it.
This course was bought by Chang Brewery about a year ago and they have
done a great job so far of getting things fixed up. It is a Sir Nick
Faldo design and with a green fee of 600 baht, one would think it is the
best value course in town.
Fairways were tight and you had to have your mind, and hands, in a
“links” mode as the hard greens took you off the back if you tried to
land near the pin.
Only one golfer shot their handicap today as Pattavia proved to be a
fine challenge for the lads. Alan Rothwell, who has been up on the
podium on a regular basis lately, was the man of the day and his 36 on
the scorecard was enough for the prime position. Reg “have another”
Glass was a couple behind with 34 and Marcel DeKind in third with 33
points.
And now, a sad tale for my return to golf after nearly 2 years off. I
forgot to count my clubs after the long absence so when there looked to
be loads of metal sticking out, I stopped counting after 15 and had to
DQ with 34 points on the card. Shame, but it felt great to get back out
there anyway!
Friday, Feb. 21, Greenwood A&B (white tees) – Monthly
Medal
1st Barry Tregurtha (18) net 67
T2nd Phil Smedley (10) net 70
T2nd Ian Brimble (7) net 70
3rd Mike Rushant (12) net 73
T4th Bryan Carroll (19) net 74
T4th Mick Robinson (16) net 74
40 golfers were signed up for the Monthly Medal today and there was a
great buzz on the 1st tee at Greenwood. This is getting to be a real fun
event for The Golf Club and you had better sign up early if you want to
be in the hunt.
It was a cast of characters for this month’s leaderboard and the usual
suspects were all right there. Bryan Carroll got in another fine round
before his return to Scotland and shared 4th with Mick Robinson. Mike
Rushant took sole third place while Ian Brimble and our Golf Captain
Phil Smedley also tied with a net 70.
Blowing away the field and shooting lights out when he has to, Barry the
Book came through again with a fine 67 to win this month’s TGC Monthly
Medal. I have played with Barry several times and this guy can perform
under pressure, so it’s a great win for “The Book”!

Max & Steve pull out the stops at Pattavia
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Mashi Kanata & Don Carmody
with 2 of Bert’s finest.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, Feb. 18, Greenwood A & B – Stableford
We arrived at Greenwood on time, despite the
potholes on the road that are getting so bad they actually remind me of
home, and we noticed that the car park was nearly empty.
As usual the wind was blowing today and the water in front of A3
beckoned, so needless to say, in went my ball. A tough start and the day
remained difficult on the front nine. On B Nine for some reason the
going seemed to get easier and we zipped around. On both nines the
greens were a bit slow and the fairways were good to play off, if a
little hard.
With 27 players today that meant 54 goes at a near pin on the A Nine par
3’s. Well we did not have a single one and that meant that nobody hit a
par three despite us having some single handicappers in the field.
Things happen all the time at golf that amaze!
Back at Bert’s it was soon to declare the results and in the B Flight,
19-up, the winner was Don Carmody with 38 points on count back over Dick
Warberg in second. Taking third place was Carole Kubicki with 36 points
and in fourth was your scribe Derek Brook with 34 points on count back
over Jack Robertson and Henry Wong.
Steve Hamstad & Max
Bracegirdle.
So to the A Flight, 0-18, and there
was not even a blush as the winner with just 32 points was Mashi Kanata
on count back over Andre Van Dyk in second and Tom Herrington in third.
Not to add to the embarrassment but this time Tom lost two count backs,
situation normal. In fourth was Dave Cooper with 31 points.
Carol Kubicki quite rightly said if she had played off 18 she would have
won the A Flight by two points, but sadly you have to declare your
handicap before the card is handed in!
Near Pins: B2 - Barry Elphick, B5 - John Hackett
Long Putts: Barry Elphick, Gus Dickie
Friday, Feb. 21, Pattavia Century – Stableford
We have started to use this course of late,
despite the fact that the drive there is not very good. Once at the
course the clubhouse we use is still the ‘old one’ but we are told the
new facility will be finished shortly. With all this improvement the
green fee has increased, but it will be worth it.
Some of the greens on this day were very fast, and they seem to be
improving, and another good thing about the course is the layout, which
in my opinion is better than many courses with more lofty reputations.
When the clubhouse is finished this will be a fine place to visit.
So to the golf, and in the A Flight, 0-18, the winner was Steve Hamstad
with 40 points ahead of Walter Baechli in second with 36 and John
Harrison third with 32.
In the B Flight the winner was Max Bracegirdle with 40 points ahead of
Barry Elphick in second with 33 and Don Carmody took third with 32.

Danny Miller’s 1-over is best of the week
IPGC golf from The Haven
Danny Miller and
Allan Hanlon.
Monday, Feb. 17, Khao Kheow B & C - Stableford
CSS 73
Division 1 (0-13)
1st Danny Miller (8) 35pts
2nd Keith Evans (7) 32pts
3rd Russell Exley (8) 32pts
4th Alan Hanlon (13) 32pts
Division 2 (14+)
1st Patrick Scullion (22) 34pts
2nd Al Rolnik (19) 34pts
3rd Dave McCormack (16) 33pts
4th Tim Morgan (24) 32pts
An extremely tough week on the local courses started at the immaculately
presented Khao Kheow B and C layout, but unfortunately the condition of
the course did not assist the hopefuls in even equaling the par as the
wind and difficulty of the greens conspired to defeat them all.
Peter Skinner and Patrick Scullion.
The best of the day, and indeed the week, was Danny Miller’s one over
handicap round to take the first division top spot, three clear of a
very good field of low handicappers, which underlined the severity of
the day as the CSS of the day at plus one confirmed.
Keith Evans led in a trio at four over with a better count back of 18,
which left Russell Exley in third with 16 and Alan Hanlon in fourth with
14.
The second division was headed by Patrick Scullion, taking his first win
after several weeks of effort both on the course and in the gym, and for
once not heavily handicapped with extra bottles of the house red from
the previous evening. His 12 on the back six was enough to ensure
victory after he had tied the nine at 16 apiece with Al Rolnik, as the
latter could glean just 10, which left him in second spot.
Dave McCormack and fellow newcomer Tim Morgan also had to go through the
count back system to find Dave with 18 and Tim with 17, placing them in
third and fourth respectively.
Keith Evans had the sole 2 in the first division whilst Walter O’Keefe
had the only one in the second division to sweep the roll over pool.
Wednesday, Feb. 19, Mountain Shadow (Blue tees) - Stableford

5th Craig Elliott (13) 28pts
Division 1 (14+)
1st Walter O’Keefe (16) 34pts
2nd Terry Hodgkiss (21) 32pts
3rd Shuichi Kodaka (18) 28pts
4th Patrick Scullion (22) 28pts
5th Markku Tynell (22) 28pts
Another solid turnout demanded the formation of two divisions once again
and with a fair number of low handicappers in the field the first
division was cut at 13 and below for the second occasion in a row.
Once again the course was found to be the master of all with the CSS for
the day going out three strokes to 75 as the heavy conditions, a brisk
breeze and very tricky greens with one or two nightmare pin placements
took their toll on the field.
The first division was taken by Alan Hanlon at five over handicap as he
finished very strongly with nine of the points coming on the last four
holes, which was just sufficient to see of the close challenges of Danny
Miller and Russell Exley in second and third spots. Danny won a count
back over Russell for second with a better 14 to 12 and his card could
have been so much better if not for the par threes on which he amassed a
very meager one point from the four holes.
Bruce Kusyk took fourth, one shot back and Craig Elliott fifth another
one behind.
The second division saw the best score of the day returned by the
in-form Walter O’Keefe who singlehandedly stopped the day being a
non-counting event as he led in Terry Hodgkiss by two for the win.
Shuichi Kodaka led a three-way count back for third with the best 18 as
Patrick Scullion took fourth with 17 and Markku Tynell fifth with 16.
There were no 2’s in the first division but George Pittam had the sole
one in the second division.
Prior to the presentations it was announced that following the recent
delivery to The Haven of the long standing back order for “Round Tuits”,
there were now an additional sixteen golf lockers available for rent
either weekly, monthly or yearly, now that the in-house carpenter had
finally got around to it.
Friday, Feb. 21, Eastern Star - Stableford
CSS 74
Division 1 (0-16)
1st Peter Skinner (11) 30pts
2nd Kevin Townsend (11) 27pts
3rd James Hawley (0) 27pts
4th Walter O’Keefe (16) 27pts
Division 2 (17+)
1st Markku Tynell (22) 31pts
2nd Don Everett 919) 29pts
3rd Patrick Scullion (22) 27pts
4th Russell Gilroy (18) 27pts
Once again two divisions were required but with the cut being made at 16
and below as a few of the lower handicappers decided to take a rest for
the day. The CSS for the day spiraled up two strokes only being saved a
non-counting tag as another IPGC group managed to get a couple of
players to make the grade of within two of handicap after the course was
found to be extremely wet following continuous overnight rain, which
made the 6,600 yard layout seem about 400 yards longer.
The first division went to Peter Skinner with a score that he thought
was in the cellar but turned out to be top dog by three from a three-way
count back that Kevin Townsend led with a better 15, followed by James
Hawley in third who had to beat Walter O’Keefe on the back six by 11 to
8 after they had tied the nine at 12 apiece.
The second division was won by Markku Tynell by two points ahead of Don
Everett in second, with Patrick Scullion getting his third mention of
the week in third and Russell Gilroy in fourth after the former had won
a count back with a better 11 to 10 following two good opening nines.
Once again there were no 2’s in the first division but Markku Tynell
defied the odds makers with one in the second division.

Collier in top form at Mt. Shadow
PSC golf from The Billabong Bar Golf Group
Monday, Feb. 17, Greenwood -
Stableford
Greenwood was in great condition today with
lightening fast greens and the course was not packed which gave us just
a four hour round, which is great for this time of the year.
Out of three groups there were roughly half that managed to beat 30
points, with two-way count backs for first and second and for third and
fourth. Coming in fourth place was Noddy Moyle with 33 points, beaten on
a count back by Ivor Smith with the same score. Second place went to
Phil Waite with 36 points who was also edged on count back by the day’s
winner, Jack Piercefield who was playing his first game this trip.
There were no ‘2’s so all the loot went to prizes.
Wednesday, Feb. 19, Green Valley - Stableford
Green Valley our normal Wednesday venue also
marked a day of remembrance for our friend Darl White, who sadly passed
away from cancer the previous Friday and a few beers were drunk on the
way round in memory of our good mate.
The course wasn’t packed out and we got around in just over four hours
once again. The greens were good and fast and the scribe, along with
Kiwi Bill and Richard Steadman, got a lesson on the way round from good
mate Ted Pease, a member of the USPGA who is currently over from Toronto
for a bit of warm weather. When he left home it was about minus 20
degrees.
The scores were very good, with Wayne Cotterell taking fifth place on
count back over Bruce McAdam with 22 points on the back nine to Bruce’s
21. Fourth place went to Aulke with 37 points, once again on a count
back with him being beaten by Peter Nixon in third. In second spot was
Paul Bourke with 38 points and first place was taken today by Bob Finley
with a fine 39 points.
There were five ‘2’s today from Mal Farquharson, Jim Bell, Peter
LeNoury, Mel Hutcheson, and Paul Bourke.
Friday, Feb. 21, Mt. Shadow - Stableford
No rain at Mountain Shadow today, which was good
as some courses were rained off further south. The course was in great
condition with the greens, as always, lightening fast and any putt from
above the hole was absolutely treacherous.
With six groups playing we were off to an early start and with no
holdups it was just about four hours to complete the round.
We welcomed Steve Balfour and his good mate Richard Pennychick today;
Steve works with Lloyd Shuttleworth in Iraq and Richard is a security
guy in Afghanistan. Both are here for some much deserved R&R.
The scores were very good and coming in fourth place was Sel Wegner with
36 points, being beaten by Owen Walkley on count back. Second went to
Phil Waite with a fine 37 points but the day was taken by Dave Collier
with a mighty 40 points. Well done mate, a great round on this course!
There was just one ‘2’ today, coming from Brian Maddox.
Note: The Billabong Golf Bar is situated just off Siam Country Club Road
looking straight down Lake Mabprachan. Give Bob a call on 082 204 3411.

United lose Division 1 opener in Phuket
Pattaya United line up
prior to their Division 1 opening fixture against Phuket FC, Sunday,
Feb. 23. (Photo courtesy Pattaya United FC)
Pattaya United’s first taste of
Division 1 football ended in disappointment last weekend as they were
consigned to a 1-0 away defeat at the hands of Phuket FC on Sunday.
The home team started much the brighter and should have taken the lead
on 22 minutes when they were awarded a penalty kick after Pattaya
midfielder Tanet Benpard upended his opponent in the area. Brazilian Ney
Fabiano stepped up to take the resultant spot kick but his shot hit the
foot of the Pattaya goalpost and flew out to safety.
Phuket continued to dominate the first half proceedings and were guilty
of missing some more guilt edged opportunities; Brazilian midfielder
Eber being the worst culprit as he fired over the bar with the goal
seemingly at his mercy.
Quite surprisingly the score remained 0-0 at half-time but once the
second half got underway it didn’t take long for the home team to break
the deadlock. One the hour mark, the ball was whipped into the Pattaya
area from the right wing and Dolphins’ keeper Sankla totally mistimed
his jump to leave Fabiano the simplest of tasks to bundle the ball into
the back of the net from 5 yards out.
The momentum of the game shifted after the goal as Phuket took their
foot off the gas and Pattaya carved out their two best chances of the
match in the closing minutes; Nakphet was twice put through on goal but
failed to hit the mark either time and Phuket held on to get their
season off to a winning start.
Pattaya United’s next Division 1 fixture is on Saturday, March 8 at home
against Ayutthaya FC. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Pattaya Arena ‘Dolphins’ join Thailand Futsal League
Nipitchon Ketpongpat,
president of Pattaya Arena Futsal Club (left) presents a Pattaya Arena
jersey to mayor Ittipol Kunplome at the press conference to launch the
new Futsal team, held Tuesday, Feb. 18 at the Indoor stadium in Soi
Chaiyapruek 2.
Warunya Thongrod
Pattaya is joining the Thailand Futsal League 2014 with a new team
called Pattaya Arena.
Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome and Education Ministry secretary Chanyuth
Hengtrakul officially announced the start of the team’s 2014 campaign
Feb. 18 at the Eastern National Indoor Stadium with Mini Siam owner
Nipitchon Ketpongpat, who is president of the new club.
While the Pattaya Arena Futsal Club was founded in 2013, Pattaya fielded
a non-league team for the previous six years, placing second in the CAT
Regional Futsal Tournament 2011-2012 and reaching the final 16 teams in
the Umay Plus FA Cup. Based on those achievements, the Thailand Futsal
League invited Pattaya to field a team for league play.
“To prepare the team to compete in the Thailand Futsal League, we chose
talented coaches Pattaya Piemkhum and Prasert Innui because they have
experience with national players,” Nipitchon said. “We hope to finish in
the first 7 positions in the first leg and upon completion of the
season, we hope to be in the top five of the 16 teams.”
“The introduction of the futsal club is for fans to know that we are
competing in the Thailand Futsal League 2014,” mayor Itthiphol added.
“This will help push and develop Pattaya youths as professional futsal
players competing in national programs, which will consequently develop
the city’s economy and the stadium will be used to host home games.”
Called the Dolphins, the futsai club is sponsored by many organizations,
the mayor said.
“It started small and continued to develop to the national level and is
another result of the hard work by Pattaya youths. We hope that Pattaya
Arena will finish in the No. 1 position and at the top of the table. I
encourage Pattaya citizens to continue supporting our team,” Itthiphol
said.

Injuries and mascot mayhem hits
Pattaya Cricket Club in Chiang Mai
The Pattaya Cricket Club
team in Chiang Mai.
Pattaya Cricket Club visited Chiang
Mai last weekend to compete in the four team cricket event hosted by the
Gymkhana CC and including Patong CC and Lanna CC. A 15-over format
enabled each team to play each other over the two days and PCC had 2
games on the Saturday and their final game on Sunday.
An early start against Gymkhana CC was PCC’s first assignment, with the
club mascot Patsy sat on the boundary edge, and having won the toss PCC
elected to field. Dan Coogan, having flown in from Aberdeen for a much
anticipated weekend of cricket, was absent due to a miscalculation of
alcohol and sleep the night before. Up stepped 12th man John Gilmour to
play his first ever game of cricket but despite his best efforts the
only thing he managed to catch all weekend was the sun!
PCC’s stalwart Salman was unable to open the bowling due to a 3rd degree
groin tear (but declared himself available to open the batting) and his
absence was missed as the opening pair of Hamza (son of Salman) and Andy
Emery were dispatched to all parts of the ground. Dropped catches proved
costly, not just in terms of runs conceded but in injuries to personnel,
as Shaun Jones managed to miss a skier and shin the ball 60 metres,
resulting in a lump the size of an ostrich egg and meaning he could only
hobble thereafter, very slowly.
Patsy still recovering from
her ordeal.
The spinning duo of John ‘The Anchor’ Spiers and Booby Young slowed the
run rate a little but the damage had been done and a target of 157 was
always going to be a tall order.
In reply PCC were immediately on the back foot, not from short pitched
bowling, but the first ever incident in cricket memory of an injury, a
pulled hamstring, of the runner afforded to Salman, who himself had his
own groin strain. At this stage the captain Simon Philbrook was counting
the number of walking wounded and wondering how they would cope with the
rest of the weekend. Despite a cameo 35no from the captain the team
finished 52 runs adrift and were left literally licking their wounds.
After a 2 hour break to tend to the wounded and a few light refreshments
it was the turn of Phuket CC. Again, electing to bowl first the PCC
bowlers rose to the challenge and regular wickets kept the run rate in
check, despite fielders hobbling all over the outfield, leaving a total
of 113 to overcome.
The reply was emphatic with John G (15) and Dan N (33no) finding their
best form and The Anchor weighing in with a cultured 48no to record a 9
wicket victory.
An afternoon Sunday game against Lanna CC meant the winners would finish
runners up to Gymkhana CC who had annihilated everyone before them.
Once again bowling first, PCC encountered the finest innings of the
weekend. Martin ‘Kiwi’ Cruickshank hammered 51 from 18 balls (retired)
that the rest of the Lanna batsmen capitalized on to demoralize the PCC
bowlers and post an imposing 161 runs.
An admirable effort saw PCC score 131 in reply, with The Anchor (38no)
again top scoring but not before some scoring rate sledging from his own
team mate Andy. However, this bout of in house sledging did not affect
the adjudicator’s decision in awarding The Anchor a much deserved ‘man
of the tournament’ award.
To add to the disappointment of the day’s loss the Club’s beloved mascot
Patsy, who had sat on the boundary both days and not missed a single
ball bowled and partied into the early hours each night, was kidnapped
from under the players’ noses. This resulted in a frantic search and the
discovery of a ransom note. The evening’s entertainment was not the same
without Patsy, it was as if the heart had been ripped out the team.
‘Missing’ posters were distributed all over Chiang Mai but to no avail.
There was a sombre atmosphere throughout the night that no amount of
alcohol could lift.
The breakfast mood could not have been more of a contrast as Patsy
appeared at the dining table, a little worse for wear, missing an
earring and shoe, but smiling with that toothy grin of hers. Evidently
still suffering from the shock of her ordeal she hasn’t told anyone yet
as to who her abductors were, all we know is there was a strong South
African accent involved.
An excellent weekend was had by everyone, even Dan Coogan. Friendships
were formed between like minded individuals with a common passion for
the game of cricket. But most importantly, young Thai kids were given
the opportunity to show off their skills and participate in a team sport
that provides invaluable experience in matters such as maturity and
education. PCC donated a club shirt to the outstanding Thai cricketer of
the weekend and some equipment to supplement their sparse kitbag.
PCC’s next fixtures are both at home at the Thai Polo Ground versus
British Club on Saturday 1st March and Siam CC on Sunday 2nd March from
11 a.m.

Gilbert cans a hole-in-one at Khao Kheow
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Andy Rich
Monday, Feb. 17, Treasure Hill - Stableford
On Monday the week started with a visit to Treasure Hill, not an easy
course for an opening examination and the scores in Division 1 reflected
that. ‘Old Father Time’ Larry Simpson once again showed his juniors the
way home, but of course Larry does start with an advantage because with
his 70th birthday being but a distant memory, he gets to start off the
yellow tees whereas everyone else is off the whites. Nevertheless, week
after week he is there at the top of the leaderboard. On this occasion
it was Neil Bramley and Graham Hurdon who followed Larry home.
Tristan Gilbert - hole in
one at Khao Kheow.
In Division 2 a newcomer, Yanao
Aoyama, walked off with the top prize after shooting a remarkable 40pts.
I don’t think he will be playing off a 28 handicap for much longer.
Trailing in a long way behind were Mike Lam and Carmen Hurdon with 35
and 34pts respectively.
Div. 1 (0-12)
1st Larry Simpson (8) 33pts
2nd Neil Bramley (10) 32pts
3rd Graham Hurdon (9) 32pts
Div. 2 (13+)
1st Yanao Aoyama (28) 40pts
2nd Mike Lam (22) 35pts
3rd Carmen Hurdon (21) 34pts
Tuesday, Feb. 18, Green Valley/St. Andrews -
Stableford
The TRGG herd was split on Tuesday with playing
Green Valley and the other half taking on the challenge of St Andrews.
At the latter course it was the crème de la crème who rose to the top as
Martin Cooper took first place with 40 points of his single figure
handicap while Jim Cleaver came in second, one ahead of Dave Palmer.
Martin Cooper.
Over at Green Valley the leaner guys
came to the fore with Nick Thomas tearing the place apart by shooting a
hugely impressive 40 points. A whole street behind were Yoshiya Ebina
and Mike Rushant who fought it out for second and third, with Yoshiya
prevailing on count back.
St. Andrews
1st Martin Cooper (2) 40pts
2nd Jim Cleaver (9) 36pts
3rd Dave Palmer (6) 35pts
Green Valley
1st Nick Thomas (14) 40pts
2nd Yoshiya Ebina (18) 34pts
3rd Mike Rushant (12) 34pts
Thursday was a visit to Khao Kheow (B and A courses) where the largest
field of the week trampled the impressive fairways to dust.
In Division 1, Andy Mellett made it back to the final watering hole in
first place with an impressive 40 points and was followed home by Trevor
Nash and Alan Thomas in second and third respectively.
Only upon returning to the clubhouse did the rest of the field hear
about Tristan Gilbert’s ‘Ace’ on the 5th hole on the A course. Tristan
apologized to one and all, stating he had not foreseen the possibility
of a hole in one and had failed to insure against the possibility, and
that there was therefore no way he could afford to buy everybody in such
a large gathering a drink, whereupon he was immediately tarred and
feathered and run out of town.
In Division 2 it ended in chaos with three people all returning with 35
points each and after an intensive count back it was discovered that a
lady had beaten off the challenge of two guys. Carmen Hurden came up
smelling of roses, with Ed Brubaker and Demon Wong smelling of that
stuff that roses thrive in.
Div.1 (0-13)
1st Andy Mellett (5) 40pts
2nd Trevor Nash (11) 38pts
3rd Alan Thomas (5) 36pts
Div.2 (14+)
1st Carmen Hurdon (21) 35pts
2nd Ed Brubaker (14) 35pts
3rd Demon Wong (20) 35pts
Saturday, Feb. 22, Eastern Star - Stableford
On Saturday the multitude moved off to Eastern
Star to complete the week’s trek. In Division 1 Trevor Nash found the
grass to his liking, taking first prize from Neil Bramley in second and
Jim Cleaver in third.
In Division 2 Rick Mussellam took the honours, with Michael Lam in
second and Mod Chaviraksa placing third.
Div.1 (0-12)
1st Trevor Nash (10) 35pts
2nd Neil Bramley (10) 34pts
3rd Jim Cleaver (10) 34pts
Div.2 (13+)
1st Rick Mussellam (21) 34pts
2nd Michael Lam (22) 33pts
3rd Mod Chaviraksa (13) 31pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like
to play a round with the TRGG, please phone Fergus Brennan on 086 056
7019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name to
the weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.

Do you have experience in fencing?
Pattaya Sports Club
presents new fencing equipment to the Redemptorist Vocational School for
People with Disabilities.
William Macey
& Derek Franklin
Pattaya Sports Club has a long tradition of promoting a number of sports
among Thai children, including football, badminton, table tennis,
volleyball, swimming and others. But we were recently given the
opportunity to help The Redemptorist Vocational School for People with
Disabilities to participate in fencing, a relatively new sport to the
school.
It is no big surprise to find that those in wheelchairs do not give up
on life and have a determination to succeed and are continually moving
the goalposts, particularly in the field of sports as they participate
in swimming, wheelchair basketball, tennis, volleyball, takraw and
exercises in the gymnasium.
The Redemptorist school has always provided sports facilities to the
students who have gone on to experience great success, taking part in
provincial, national and international sporting competitions, and eight
former students even competed at the 2012 Paralympics in London. At the
National Games for the Disabled, the majority of competitors
representing the province of Chonburi were students from the Pattaya
school and most provinces will at least have one former student from the
school in their team.
The students show off their
fencing skills.
At the recent SEA Games for the
Disabled, students from the Pattaya school were selected to represent
Thailand in a number of sports including basketball, swimming, power
lifting and track and field events, returning with many medals.
Unfortunately, the fencing team was not able to attend for they were not
able to practice and prepare for such a big competition due to lack of
equipment.
A request was therefore made to Pattaya Sports Club for new and
additional equipment to encourage the students to continue with this
recent activity. Unfortunately, many of the students are left handed and
most of the existing equipment is for right handed people. This
situation was remedied when the purchase was made and at this month’s
National Games 3 gold medals, 1 silver and 9 bronze medals were won and,
with the new equipment the students can now prepare for the next SEA
Games in Korea.
When delivering the equipment, representatives of Pattaya Sports Club
were astonished at the skill levels and speed of the individuals and
there is nothing that PSC enjoys more than to witness children having a
great time, particularly those that have a disability. It is important
to provide a number of different sports for the students for not only
does sport keep the students fit and healthy, but it gives them a sense
of achievement and belonging, which in turn builds confidence and self
esteem.
Can you spare just a few hours per month? The fencing team has no
recognized coach and would dearly love to have someone with experience
to show them the finer points of the sport. If you need more information
please contact Derek Franklyn on 085 286 9673 or William Macey on 086
152 2754.

Triple celebration for Superbike champion Ben Fortt
Ben Fortt goes airborne
at Cadwell Park race track in Lincolnshire, England.
Barry Russell
There were three reasons to be cheerful last week for Pattaya superbike
star, Ben Fortt. Media, sponsors, relatives and friends gathered at the
family’s pub, the Caddyshack, in Thepprasit Soi 8, to mark the racer’s
20th birthday, his international achievements in 2013 and his new
contract for 2014.
Exactly 12 months ago Ben, with his father, Keith, had flown to the UK
to see what he could achieve in one of the world’s most competitive
superbike environments. They landed straight into one of the coldest and
longest winters on record and one which caused numerous race
cancellations and frustrations for the young Thai. However, even with no
previous wet weather experience he quickly established himself as one of
the frontrunners in the national Hottrax Motogrande 1000 class and began
to rack up points in the rain and sleet.
When the weather warmed up Ben suffered a number of crashes and injuries
as he pushed himself against seasoned opposition at the UK’s many varied
and challenging circuits. During his last spell in hospital Ben and
Keith decided to switch from the BMW they had been running to a Kawasaki
ZX-10R. It proved to be a turning point. Ben found the consistency to go
with the speed he had been showing and grew in confidence as he closed
the gap on the championship leaders, finishing regularly in the top
three, including two victories at the iconic Brands Hatch circuit.
He returned to Thailand at the end of the season as the 2013 Hottrax
Motogrande 1000 champion.
The popular racer, known since the beginning of his superbike career as
the Pattaya Iceman because of his cool approach to the visceral nature
of his chosen sport, was not short of offers for 2014. With his father
he carefully weighed the options of a further international adventure or
campaigning in Thailand’s professional superbike championship. An
approach came from six-times Thailand superbike champion and now Elf
Smart Honda team boss, ‘Superbird’ Saen Choisak, to run in the
professional SB-1 class in Thailand.
Speaking after a sumptuous buffet dinner, Keith Fortt paid tribute to
his son and revealed that after witnessing the crashes and injuries
during the first half of the season he had personally been ready to
return home. It was Ben, he went on, who insisted that they finish what
they had come to do. From that moment they never looked back and Ben
became the first ever Thai to win a British motorsport championship.
‘Superbird’ endorsed the strength of character that Ben had shown: “I
have known and watched Ben for a few years, from his first races as a
rookie, to becoming Thailand’s SB-2 champion in 2012 and then his
amazing achievement in the UK last year.
“He not only has good natural speed and control, but a thoroughly
professional approach to racing. He listens, he works hard and he has
the mental strength of a champion,” he continued. “I admire his approach
and am looking forward to working with him this season. We have set a
tough target, to win the SB-1 championship. If we are able to achieve
it, we will send him to race in the Spanish Moto2 championship through
our partnership with the Stop and Go Moto2 Team.
“The Spanish series is the one where most of the world’s top MotoGP
racers, including Marc Marquez have been developed, so it is a fantastic
opportunity we have been able to open up. Of course, there is a lot of
hard work to do to win the Thai championship first!”
Ben took the microphone to express his heartfelt gratitude to his
long-term sponsor CEA Projects. “CEA have supported me ever since I was
in Supermoto and all the way through to today,” he said. “They have been
hugely important in making possible what we have done so far and I
cannot thank them enough.”
As a show of appreciation he presented CEA Projects managing director
Kevin Fisher with a framed and autographed print of him airborne on his
Kawasaki at Cadwell Park’s famous Mountain.

Stuvik denied F3 crown after ruling body
makes official decision
Thailand’s Sandy Stuvik
(left) is the official vice champion for the 2013 European F3 Open
season.
Thailand’s rising motorsport star
Sandy Stuvik was forced to concede the 2013 European F3 Open title to
rival Ed Jones of the U.A.E. last week after the formula’s organizing
committee ruled that Jones had not contravened any laws that warranted
him being disqualified from the season ending race in Barcelona last
November.
After winning the final race at the Circuit de Catalunya to claim the
title, Jones admitted to having competed in the Formula Renault 2.0
Eurocup just 2 weeks before the F3 season finale at the same circuit.
This was a clear breach of the rules, however the European Formula 3
Open committee has decided that no further action needs to be taken. Had
Jones’ final race results been nullified, the F3 Open crown would have
gone to runner-up Sandy Stuvik.
The young Thai racer was left disappointed after the governing body made
their official announcement but he remains in a determined mood.
“I feel it is an unjust ruling, however I have to accept the final
decision from the F3 committee stating that I am the vice champion
instead of the champion,” said Stuvik. “Anyway, from this situation, I
have to say thank you to all the Thai motorsports fans who gave me their
great encouragement at all times throughout last season. We are now
discussing plans about which series to compete in this year and I will
keep you updated once we have made a decision. I will keep fighting and
trying my best for Thailand and hope I will continue to get the support
from the Thai people.”

Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist wins 2014 Honda LPGA Thailand
Thailand’s Thidapa
Suwannapura was the best ranked home star, finishing tied fourteenth on
5-under.
Anna Nordqvist shot a 4-under 68 at
Siam Country Club to claim her third career LPGA Tour title at the Honda
LPGA Thailand in Pattaya last Sunday. The 26-year old from Sweden
finished the week at 15-under par and two shots ahead of Rolex Rankings
No. 1 Inbee Park.
“I’m speechless to be honest,” said Nordqvist following the win. “It’s
been a couple years since I won. I’ve been working very hard and had my
ups and downs. Just couldn’t be happier to be here. It was such a hard
push on the back nine. Inbee kept making birdies and Michelle was
playing great. I couldn’t really breathe until the last putt.”
Nordqvist started the day with a four-shot lead over Park and American
Michelle Wie but quickly made things interesting with a double bogey on
the par-4 fifth hole. Wie then picked up her second birdie of the day on
No. 5 to cut the lead to one shot.
Nordqvist putts for birdie
on the par-5 seventh to maintain her overall lead.
Nordqvist recovered with a 12-foot
birdie putt on No. 7 to extend her lead back to two shots but was
pressured by Park who picked up back-to-back birdies on Nos. 7 and 8.
Park was bogey-free in her round of 66 on Sunday, but it wasn’t enough
for the surging Nordqvist who carded five of her seven birdies on the
back nine. However, the top-ranked player in the world said she was
pleased with her performance in her first event of the 2014 season.
“I feel good,” said Park. “I mean, today my ballstriking wasn’t as good
as yesterday but I putted better than yesterday, so I feel like my
putter is coming back. I played one shot better than last year and
didn’t win. Still a very good result and it tells me I improved a
little. I’m satisfied the way I played this weekend… I think I played a
little bit better than I thought I would.”
Scotland’s Catriona Matthew finished in sole third place at 11 under
after a final round 65, and Michelle Wie was 10 under after a 69. Yani
Tseng, the winner in 2011 and 2012, had a 66 to tie for fifth at 9 under
with Stacy Lewis (66), Lexi Thompson (68), Gerina Piller (66) and
Julieta Granada (69).
Defending champion Inbee
Park of Korea tees off on the short par-3 eighth hole during her final
round 66.
As Park and Wie piled on the pressure,
Nordqvist sank a 20-foot birdie putt on the 10th hole to start a run of
three consecutive birdies on the back nine and pushed her lead to three
shots. She and Park took turns with birdies on the next four holes and
her lead was never cut to less than two. Nordqvist sealed the deal with
her 12-foot birdie putt on No. 12, leaving a nice cushion for a bogey on
the 72nd for the two-shot win.
The Swedish star said earlier in the week she was contemplating leaving
the game and credits her support team and family for keeping her happy
and on track to her goals.
Michelle Wie put up a great
fight but had to settle for fourth place on 10-under par.
“I’ve been working so hard all
winter,” she said. “These last couple years I have had a lot of great
people by my side and they kept supporting me through the good times and
the bad times. I will always be thankful for them. I’m just so excited
to get a win here, and look forward to the rest of the year.”
Nordqvist held a Swedish flag as she walked into her post-round press
conference on Sunday and couldn’t help but smile when she started
talking about putting her home country back on the map for LPGA Tour
wins. The last Swede to win on Tour was Maria Hjorth at the 2011 Avnet
LPGA Classic. With her win last week, Nordqvist is projected to move to
No. 14 in the Rolex Rankings and will be the top-ranked Swede in the
world.
“Well, there are obviously always questions about when someone is going
to win again after Annika (Sorenstam) left in 2008. So we were fortunate
to get a couple victories.”
Nordqvist said she watched the dominating play of PGA Tour player and
fellow Swede Henrik Stenson last season and thought his performances
inspired Swedish golfers everywhere.
“I think Sweden has a lot of good players,” said Nordqvist. “Henrik
Stenson last year I think was a big inspiration to all of us. We all
work very hard and sometimes it’s a grind, but sitting here now with
this trophy, for me it’s been well worth it.”
