Thai Airways’ passenger load plunges 30%

Thai Airways International (THAI), Thailand’s flag carrier, has reported a 30 percent drop in passengers from October without any sign of recovery in the near future.
Chokchai Panyayong, THAI acting president, said the political impasse since October and China’s new regulation on zero-dollar tours have negatively impacted THAI performance.
The passenger load was 72 percent last month and it will possibly fall to 70 percent this month with a predicted Q1 passenger volume at 71-72 percent and further reduction to 70 percent in Q2, which is the annual low season, he said.
He said the recent bad weather in Japan had slightly affected and delayed THAI flights and revenue on the Thailand-Japan route. (MCOT)

THAI to let THAI Smile operate Hat Yai flights from March 30

Thai Airways International (THAI) has announced that all of its flights to Hat Yai and Songkla will be operated by its lower-cost daughter airline, THAI Smile, from March 30 onwards.
According to Chokchai Panyayong, acting president and senior executive vice president of the THAI Commercial Department, the national flag carrier is scheduled to stop operating flights from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Hat Yai Airport, starting on March 30, in order to allow THAI Smile Airways to take over the task.
The change is said to be a reflection of the decline in passenger number on the Hat Yai route, especially during the low season. Given the cabin factor of only 50-60%, Chokchai pointed out that the smaller aircraft of THAI Smile would be more suitable to serve people traveling to and from Hat Yai.
Chokchai added that the overall passenger numbers of THAI have been decreasing since October 2013. With no improvement in sight, he said the political situation could continue to affect THAI’s income until the latter half of this year. (NNT)
