Toddy & Patrick too good at Navy

PSC Golf from The Growling Swan

Martin Todd, JC Lhoste & Patrick Poussier.

Peter Blackburn
Monday, Feb. 10, Plutaluang E & S – Stableford
With the colder weather well and truly behind us it was shaping up to be a hot one as we met at The Growling Swan in readiness for our departure to Plutaluang for our first outing of the week.
A late inclusion saw a field of 20 on the starting sheet and we headed off South down Sukhumvit in 2 mini vans 5 minutes ahead of schedule at 8.25 am, arriving at the golf course 45 minutes later. It was reasonably busy as it usually is on a Monday and we were allocated the East & South nines, starting on E1 and managed to get our first group away 17 minutes after our scheduled 9.28 am tee time.
With no groups immediately in front of us we were able to set a fairly good pace as we enjoyed the excellent condition of the course with the greens being very well prepared & maintained and considerably quicker than we have been used to in the past on these 2 nines. The weather did indeed turn out to be hot so plenty of water was consumed and as we slowed down somewhat on the back nine our round turned out to be a little slow taking four hours & forty minutes.

Masa Tojo & Rita Zoebelli.

The first nine was probably quicker with less time spent on the greens (four birdies for Martin Todd) but he did let us down on the second nine with just the one birdie. It was a very enjoyable round, particularly watching Toddy exercise his skills while the other three of us enjoyed the walk.
It was of course Martin “Toddy” Todd who finished on top in Division A with 38 points although just 1 point ahead of Mike Allidi whose 74 gross got him into second place. With 2 golfers on 32 points a count back was required to determine third spot and it was Colm Mullen (17 point back nine) who got the honours from Ebrahim (16 point back nine).
It was extremely tight in B Division with four golfers on that very popular score of 32 points and the count back saw Patrick Poussier (18 point back nine) finish first from Nolan “No-one” Wise (16 point back nine) in second place and Alan “Colonel” Sanders (15 point back nine) finished third. The one to miss out was Max “Corsets” Bracegirdle (14 point back nine).
Division A (0-20)
1st Martin Todd (8) 38pts
2nd Mike Allidi (3) 37pts
3rd Colm Mullen (18) 32pts
Division B (17+)
1st Patrick Poussier (23) 32pts
2nd Nolan Wise (36) 32pts
3rd Alan Sanders (26) 32pts
Near Pins: E2 – Martin Todd, E5 – Colm Mullen, S4 – Duangjai Tusagad
Long Putts: E9 – Ebrahim, S9 – Max Bracegirdle

Thursday, Feb. 13, Pleasant Valley – 2 Person Scramble/Stroke

It was time for our once a month novelty competition and this time it was Ambrose Pairs (2 person Scramble) with a random draw, pairing a low handicapper with a high one with the names being drawn out of a hat. After several late withdrawals and additions we luckily ended up with an ideal field of 28 (7 groups of four) and Pleasant Valley was the venue for the event.
As all were on time we left the GS 5 minutes early at 8.25 am and after a very good run exiting Pattaya and up number 7 we arrived at the course 40 minutes later to find a fair bit of activity there. We did the draw and after a few moans & groans (good natured of course) after discovering partners we headed to the first tee where there were a few groups ahead of us but we managed to send our first group away 5 minutes later than our scheduled 10.00 am time.
The weather was quite hot with plenty of crowd cover and a bit of wind (not Peter Grey this time) and the golf course was in great shape with the fairways lush and the greens, although a touch slow were very well kept.
The views on this course are spectacular and to be honest when some people speak negatively about this course I just shake my head! It is terrific value for money and that was the opinion of most on the day. The going was quite slow at first but did quicken up somewhat and even with a 10 minute drink stop after the 15th green we managed to complete the round in four hours & twenty minutes. Everyone enjoyed the format and there were some good results with the winning pair having an outstanding round.
With an excellent score of net 60.75 it was Rita Zoebelli and Masa Tojo who finished on top, with Colm Mullen & Russell Calcutt in second place on net 62.5. In third spot came Martin “Toddy” Todd & Max “Corsets” Bracegirdle with net 63.75 and Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei and Gerd Riedler finished in fourth place on net 64.25. Roy “Plums” Dayton & Steve Reeves completed the podium with a net 64.5, finishing in fifth place.
1st Rita Zoebelli (25) & Masa Tojo (12) net 60.75
2nd Colm Mullen (18) & Russell Calcutt (36) net 62.5
3rd Martin Todd (8) & Max Bracegirdle (25) net 63.75
4th Alain Taddei (19) & Gerd Riedler (8) net 64.25
5th Roy Dayton (23) & Steve Reeves (11) net 64.5
Near Pins: 5th – J C Lhoste, 8th – Don Richardson, 13th – Don Richardson, 17th – Max Bracegirdle
Long Putts: 9th – Steve Reeves, 18th – Gus Walker

Little leads the way at Burapha

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Jimmy Little, after a good day at Burapha.

Monday, Feb. 10, Burapha - Stableford
Burapha still remains a little out of favour as 21 Outbackers played the A and B loops, this time from the white tees. As usual the course was in top condition and the weather is starting to warm up.
Jimmy Little continued his current purple patch to record a great 41pts, the best score of the day to win Div B comfortably from Chris Smart (33) and Tim Knight (32).
Geoff Stimpson, who clearly likes this course, was again the winner of the top division with 37pts, beating Peter Nixon on c/ b and John Cunningham was third with 31.
Jimmy Little had the only ‘2’ of the day (B8) to scoop the pool.
Div A (0-19)
1st Geoff Stimpson (8) 37pts
2nd Peter Nixon (13) 37pts
3rd John Cunningham (7) 36pts
Div B (20+)
1st Jimmy Little (20) 41pts
2nd Chris Smart (28) 33pts
3rd Tim Knight (23) 32pts
Wednesday, Feb 12, The Emerald - Stableford
Welcome back to the Irish group, Vinny and friends, which boosted the numbers here at the Emerald to 25. The course was reported to be fairly good condition which produced some very solid scoring in the low to mid thirties but nothing outrageous, as it (the Emerald) remains relatively difficult to score on.

(From left): Tom Parker, Martin Kingswood and Kerry Beck.

The best score of the day, 37pts, won the two divisions; Peter Ennis taking Div A and Andy Makara, Div B. Peter Eriksen and Mick Leighton shared the other podium places in A, both on 36pts and John Stafford and Geoff Doody did likewise in B, also each with 36.
There were two ‘2’s from Stephen Mann (5th) and Peter Erikson (15th).
Div A (0-18)
1st Peter Ennis (13) 37pts
2nd Peter Erikson (6) 36pts
3rd Mick Leighton (16) 36pts
Div B (19+)
1st Andy Makara (28) 37pts
2nd John Stafford (19) 36pts
3rd Geoff Doody (25) 36pts
Friday, Feb. 14, Green Valley - Stableford
With one late scratching and one no show we had 34 Outbackers playing at the popular Green Valley course; a very good field, considering it was a National Holiday - The Buddhist Sangha Day, which is known here as Makha Bucha and is observed in Thailand on the Full Moon of the third lunar month, whereas in most other parts of Asia it is observed about a month later.
With lots of run on the course and a cool day there was bound to be some good scoring as eight of the players played to handicap or better. The day’s best score was 40pts from Martin (I’m back!!) Kingswood who, after a series of injuries in recent weeks, returned to win the top division from Pete Stonebridge (39), Kerry Beck (38) and the ever present, Bob Finley with 37.
Geoff Doody followed up his third place at Emerald on Wednesday to win Div B with 38pts from a two-way tie between Tom Parker and Andy Makara (who unusually walked the whole course) both with 37, which couldn’t be split on c/b with identical back nines right down to the last hole that looked like this:- back 9 (22pts), last 6 (16pts), last 3 (8pts) and last hole (2pts).
Fourth and fifth were playing partners, John Stafford and David Davies, both on 35pts.
There was only one ‘2’ from Dave Stockman on the 4th.
Div A (0-16)
1st Martin Kingswood (14) 40pts
2nd Pete Stonebridge (15) 39pts
3rd Kerry Beck (12) 38pts
4th Bob Finley (15) 37pts
5th Jim Brackett (9) 36pts
Div B (17+)
1st Geoff Doody (25) 38pts
2nd Tom Parker (19) 37pts
3rd Andy Makara (28) 37pts
4th John Stafford (19) 35pts
5th David Davies (24) 35pts

Plain sailing for Joel at Navy

PSC Golf from Siam Country Resort

Tuesday, Feb. 11,
Khao Kheow - Stableford

On Tuesday we visited Khao Kheow, with the A & B combination as our test of the day. Personally I consider this to be the best combo, but having said that, the C loop has its attractions too. The weather was perfect for good golf, with the course in very good condition, perhaps the best I have seen for 2 years or so.
Leading the way today was Jeff Wylie (7) with a score of 36 points, while in second spot was Paddy Devereux (22) with 32. Near pins were spread around between Bob, Tom & Willem.

Thursday, Feb. 13,
Plutaluang - Stableford

Headliner Joel Flor (23) had an outstanding front 9 of 23 points on the East course at Plutaluang before finishing on the South with 15, for a solid, and by far the best score of the day (38 for the arithmetically challenged).

Joel Flor.

The course was in decent nick, although it is getting a bit dry & hard on the fairways, while the greens are being left on the slow side to avoid stressing them from the heavy foot traffic. Second spot went to Jim Federspiel (18) with a modest 33 points, one ahead of Bob Edwards who stood on the 17th tee with 32 points, but marked time with 2 wipes. Bob made up for that by cleaning up with 3 near pins while winner Joel got the other.
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off Siam Country Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn right after 50 metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres along. Golf from here is generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with the Resort hosting prompt presentations on both days.
As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies & seniors (>60s) who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

The Haven wins the Finn Haven Trophy

IPGC golf from The Haven

Allan Hanlon and Graham Johnson.

Monday, Feb. 10, Crystal Bay C & A – Stableford
CSS 72
Division 1 (0-17)
1st Alan Hanlon (13) 35pts
2nd Bruce Kusyk (12) 34pts
3rd Russell Exley (8) 34pts
4th Walter O’Keefe (15) 34pts
5th Mick Alleyne (8) 34pts
Division 2 (18+)
1st Terry Hodgkiss (23) 40pts
2nd Konrad Klama (24) 32pts
3rd Brian Lewis (21) 32pts
4th Patrick Scullion (21) 32pts
5th Shuichi Kodaka (19) 32pts
Markku Tynell could not continue with his run of Monday successes as he slumped to one of his worst returns for some time, which left the door wide open for Terry Hodgkiss to march through, which he did in style winning the second division by eight clear after an excellent round without a blob in sight. Added to six three-pointers it gave him his best net score return for a year and equaled his previous personal best. This result will see Terry’s handicap down to its lowest ever for the following week’s competitions.

Terry Hodgkiss and Tony Frost.

The reset of the division podium placements had to be decide by a count back, which was won by Konrad Klama with a best of 15, with Brian Lewis in third with 14, Patrick Scullion in fourth on 13 and Shuichi Kodaka a disappointed fifth after he had gone out over the front nine in three under handicap.
The first division was a much closer affair with Alan Hanlon once again coming out on top with a solid one over return that could have been so much better but for a couple of errant drives which resulted in zero scores.
Second place went to a four-way count back that the inform Bruce Kusyk won with a best 18 as he was ruing the zero-pointer on the ninth to close out what was otherwise a very good front half.
Russell Exley, playing one of his occasional rounds, showed that he will be a force to be reckoned with if he starts to play more frequently once again as he took third place with 16 and a tidy card showing no double bogeys. Walter O’Keefe took fourth with 13 and Mick Alleyne fifth with a lowly 12 after he had high hopes following his opening nine.
There were no 2’s in either division.
Wednesday, Feb. 12, Greenwood A & B - Stableford
CSS 73
Division 1 (0-8)
1st Pekka Palmu (5) 33pts
2nd Phil Mitchell (6) 30pts
3rd Jukka Saarenpaa (4) 29pts
Division 2 (9-16)
1st Tony Foster (9) 38pts
2nd Craig Elliott 13) 37pts
3rd Graham Johnson (9) 35pts
Division 3 (17+)
1st Don Everett (19) 34pts
2nd Shuichi Kodaka (18) 33pts
3rd Danny Greer (24) 32pts
Ladies Division
1st Leena Copu (19) 34pts
2ndPaula Juutilainen (18) 27pts
With an enlarged field needing three divisions and a preponderance of low handicaps, the first division was cut at 8 and below and Pekka Palmu won it with a less than sparkling three over as all the low markers struggled with the greens, which were rather too uneven to allow for confidence in the stroke. Phil Mitchell placed second and Jukka Saarenpaa came third.
The second division returned the best scores with Tony Foster leading them in at two-under handicap with Craig Elliott second just a shot behind and Graham Johnson in third another stroke back.
The third division was headed by Don Everett, with Shuichi Kodaka in second place and Danny Greer in third, closing out a second clean sweep of a division by The Haven team.
The ladies division, which consisted of all Finnish ladies, was easily taken by Leena Copu ahead of Paula Juutilainen as the rest of the division found the going just too difficult.
Pekka Palmu added to his day by slotting in the only 2 in the first division whilst Danny Greer made it a very happy return by clearing out the multi-rollover in the second division with the only one.
The day’s results were also counting towards the inaugural Finn Haven Trophy played between the Finnish contingent that had been organised by Rainer Helling over the last six weeks and who normally played with the Haven group, but this year they were treated as a separate part of the Haven course bookings to cut down on congestion. This final day was the last chance to join together as in previous years.
With the best 10 scores to count, The Haven took the magnificent cut glass trophy with a better 328 points to 284.
Friday, Feb. 14, Pattavia – Stableford
CSS 74
1st Graham Johnson (9) 34pts
2nd Fred Smith (25) 32pts
3rd Steven Downes (7) 32pts
4th Tony Foster (9) 30pts
5th John Carlin (16) 29pts
After two big fields it was a much quieter day with just one division as this venue continues to prove to be too difficult a task on the greens, which are very close to being unplayable. The green-keeper could do with either letting them grow a little longer than the glass sheet present versions or water them heavily, which would go a long way to preventing many putts from being the shot before the second or third chip. It was therefore not surprising that the CSS for the day went out to 74.
Graham Johnson handled the course the best with a two-over handicap return which included a marvelous birdie ‘2’ on the 230 yard par three seventh hole, but two doubles spoiled what was otherwise an excellent round in the conditions.
Fred Smith rode his luck on the greens and avoided the trouble a couple of times with chip-ins to take second place after winning a close count back on the last three holes with a better 6 to 5, after tying the nine at 13 apiece and the last six at level 8s to leave Steven Downes in third spot.
Tony Foster took fourth another two behind and John Carlin fifth one more back.
There was little surprise when it was learned that there were no 2’s in the second division but Graham Johnson underlined his credentials by getting the only one in the first division on a day when there was unusually a bigger prize in that division than the second.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile 094 567 5726 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

McGuigan magic repeated

The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

The new Pattaya Golf Society week began at Royal Lakeside on Monday, 10th February when another seasonal large field assembled to play a stableford competition on a full course which was beautifully presented with lush fairways and very consistent and quick greens. The cut was set at seventeen and under and scores were again high on a course which traditionally allows a golfer on top of his game to score well.
In the top flight an incredible three-way tie saw Vic Woolton and Ray Banks join Chris Smith at the top of the leaderboard with 38 points each, with Chris’s round being the best gross of the day, 72 shots. In the second flight Henry Mah and Dave Plaiter shared third place with 29 points, a country mile behind second placed Phil “PJ” Mitchell’s 37 points. The flight winner was Michael McGuigan, currently on fire, with 41 points, following a similar score at Green Valley a week previously. For Big Mike CONGU’s ESR axe looms large!
Chris Smith had the honour of three birdie ‘2’s, a group record, whilst Ray Banks recorded an excellent eagle 2 on the second and increased his share of the ‘2’s pot with another fine effort on the fifteenth.
The Booby Bevy went to Keith Melbourne, returning after a two year absence with the day’s low score of fifteen points. Finally Larry Slattery took Rabbi’s non winners’ bonus beer at the end of another fine day with the PGS.
Edwards finds form
On Wednesday, 12th February the Pattaya Golf Society visited Eastern Star to play a stablefod competition on the tough course which was in good condition, even though fairways were very hard and dry and the greens a touch slow and inconsistent. A fine day and a fresh breeze kept the golfers company and in step with visits during the last few years scores were no better than average.
The single flight saw the day’s “manager”, David Thomas, make his mark for the first time since his return before Christmas with a third placed score of 32 points. Alan Flynn and Michael McGuigan shared second place with 34 points each, leaving Murray Edwards as the day’s winner with 36 points.
Murray, Alan, Chris Smith, “Banjo” Bannister, Mike Earley and Steve Evans all shared the ‘2’s pot and Larry Slattery continued to find the legendary luck of the Irish with another non-winners’ free beer courtesy of Rabbi.
The Booby Bevy went to Keith Melbourne after he survived an embarrassing sartorial challenge by luckily borrowing a belt to replace the errant zipper and safety pin. It was that sort of day at Eastern Star, really, a day to make amends when very little went right.
Rowson returns
On Friday, 14th February the Pattaya Golf Society visited Mountain Shadow to play a stableford competition on the challenging course which was reasonably well prepared, except for the bunkers and with tasty and quick greens. A humid day saw the play interrupted by some drizzle but generally it went off well.
In the single flight three golfers shared second place with “Banjo” Bannister, Mike Earley and Henry Mah divvying up the spoils with 31 points each. The winner was the newly returned Ian Rowson, the adopted Aussie whose 35 points showed the man will be the one to beat over the next couple of weeks.
The ‘2’s pot was shared by Alan Flynn and Syd Harrison, the latter chipping in from all of forty yards on the eighth.
The Booby Bevy went to Mike Earley by way of consolation after a rules ruling may have cost him second place on his own and Rabbi’s non-winners’ beer draw was won by Michael McGuigan on the eve of his departure for a cold and damp Scotland. You’ll miss us when you’ve gone Big Mike!

Warberg finds gold at Treasure Hill

Tuesday, Feb. 11, Crystal Bay – Stableford
Arriving at the first tee we found out we were to play the B & C Nines, and we actually got away on time. For many years this was my favourite course, it used to be in pristine condition, however the years have not been kind to it, it would be interesting to see how it was on this day.
As we walked down the opening hole the first thing I noticed was that the ball had mud on it and looking around you could see they had been watering the fairway, and so it proved all the way around, but we did play the ball as it lay. The second thing was that the greens were very poor. They now have growths of various coloured grass on them and seem to bounce a lot. Some of the grass is quite fast to putt over and the darker greens were really slow. It was a bit of a nightmare on them and the players were not happy bunnies.

Tuesday winners with one of Bert’s finest.

The rest of the round was much as one could expect at Crystal Bay, with a strong wind. You always get to play a reasonable game on this course as in most respects it is fairly forgiving, so players always feel they are having a good day, of course except for the greens.
In the A Flight, 0 to 18, the winner was Peter Platt with 38 points ahead of Tom Herrington in second with 36 points on count back over Mashi Kaneta in third. It may be noted that Tom Herrington at long last actually won a count back, has the world stopped turning? In fourth was Mark West with 35 points.
In the B Flight the winner was Henry Wong with a great 40 points, I see him moving into the A Flight soon. In second was Carole Kubicki with 38 and we then had a count back on 34 points that saw Graham Buckingham in third, George King in fourth and Don Carmody just losing out.
One interesting result was in the long putt competition on the last hole, when Richard Kubicki was holding pole position and seemingly could not be beaten, until that is Gus Dickie arrived and sank a monster!

Long Putts: Peter Platt, Gus Dickie
Thursday, Feb. 13, Treasure Hill – Stableford
This is one of the courses that continues to get better and conversely also seems to get harder every time we play there. On this day as we went down the first we noticed that the area in front of the green was under repair and wondered if this was a warning of things to come, but from then on the round was a pleasure. The fairways were really good, the rough really tough and the greens were running at a good speed; it would be interesting to see from the scores how the players had handled a day out on this tough but fair course.
The restaurant and facilities here have always been a bit basic but plenty good enough when you just need a shower and a bite to eat for the trip back.
Back at Bert’s it was soon time for the results and the winner on the day with a great round and 40 points was that old ‘Warhorse’ Dick Warberg. Nice to see him back on form! In second was Mark West with 37 points, one ahead of Don Carmody in third. Taking fourth spot was Graham Buckingham with 34 points ahead of a count back on 32 points that saw Andre Van Dyk in fifth and Joseph Buckhagen in sixth. T.T.F.N.

Smith shows sublime form at Riverside

PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch

Neil Griffin (right) celebrates a rare win with Skinny Newton on the 1st tee at Greenwood.

Monday, Feb. 10, Bangpakong Riverside – Stableford
Only 19 players turned up for the visit to Bangpakong, which was just enough to make two divisions. The numbers were a little disappointing as this is the best conditioned of all the courses we play; the new facilities are first class and at THB 900 green fee, excellent value for money. It is the longest distance we travel but it’s an easy run straight up 7 and then the motorway taking an hour door to door.
The weather was excellent but temperatures were the highest we’ve encountered this year with very little breeze to cool the combatants. Lush fairways and very true medium paced greens saw a lot of very good scores. The big hitting guys really found it to their liking playing off the, just short of 6700 yard, white tees.
Paul Smith shot the lights out with a 3-under par gross 69 for 43points, including 2 eagles, an OB and hitting the water, and only just beating Mark Stanley’s 42pts. Perennial winner Colin Greig had to settle for third with 40pts.
In B section Mike Corner had back to back wins with a fine 41pts, closely followed by a resurgent Raleigh Gosney with 37, and Neil Griffin sliding into third with 35.
Altogether a third of the field bettered 36 points. The par 3’s here are tough and all four near pins went to the A division.
A Flight
1st Paul Smith (4) 43pts
2nd Mark Stanley (9) 42pts
3rd Colin Greig (8) 40pts
B Flight
1st Mike Corner (21) 41pts
2nd Raleigh Gosney (18) 37pts
3rd Neil Griffin (26) 35pts
Near Pins: Paul Smith, Phil Moore, Colin Greig and Clive Bruce.
Wednesday, Feb. 12, Greenwood – Stableford
Twenty-two golfers assembled for the 55 minute journey to the furthest course up the 331. Temperatures were on the high side with some cloud cover for respite and a strong wind at times aiding the body cooling process.
We were allocated B and C courses playing off the 3599 yard white tees. Another society was ahead of us and play was slow for the first nine holes, taking 2½ hours, before speeding up on the back nine and a very good paced 2 hours.
The course is in some serious need of rain with a lot of very dry patches on the fairways giving an enormous amount of run. Unfortunately this advantage was negated by the very tight lies and with greens hard and fast, players struggled to stop the ball on the dance floor.
Players from B flight adapted better to the conditions with Neil Griffin scoring a creditable 38 points to record his first win since mid November. Jack Robertson was close on his heels with 37 points and Mike Corner, after a 2 shot handicap cut, a point further back.
In A flight there were only two players to shoot to handicap with Geoff Parker pipping Colin Greig on count back, both with 36 points. Back in the distance a 4-way count back on 31 points saw Dave Ashman take third spot.
Same old faces for nearest the pins with the exception of PJ Redmond, who topped his ball off the tee and headed right. On reaching the green he had somehow trickled on and as every other golfer missed, a bemused PJ gratefully accepted the prize.
A Flight
1st Geoff Parker (14) 36pts
2nd Colin Greig (7) 36pts
3rd Dave Ashman (14) 31pts
B Flight
1st Neil Griffin (26) 38pts
2nd Jack Robertson (26) 37pts
3rd Mike Corner (19) 36pts
Near Pins: Colin Greig, Geoff Parker, Paul Smith and PJ Redmond
Friday, Feb. 14, Crystal Bay C & A - Stableford
So ended a confusing week for our fixtures organiser; we were double booked Monday, not booked Wednesday and had Friday’s booking cancelled on Thursday afternoon. Despite that he organised a round on each day.
We arrived at Crystal Bay being warned it was heavily booked and would be slow but despite several 5-balls being in front of us we got round in 4 hours 15 minutes, considerably better than most rounds of late.
The weather was overcast and it finally produced our first rain of the year with some light showers late on the back nine. The course remained the same, bumpy greens because of the different grasses and no maintenance on the bunkers, a pity as this is a good layout with excellent staff and caddies.
Keith Norman won comfortably with 38pts from Bruce Gladden on 35 who edged out Tony Robbins for second place.
1st Keith Norman (13) 38pts
2nd Bruce Gladden (12) 35pts
Near Pins: Barry Murnin, Mike Corner, Tony Robbins and Colin Greig.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society who now play out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation. New players are always welcome.

A field of 93 players teed it up for Christy Knight’s Captain’s Day, so it was all to play for including a Mercedes KLS car for anyone lucky enough to sink a hole in one on the short par-three twelfth hole. Once again the conditions proved to be a little harder than most of the players would have wished, although the condition of the course could not be faulted, with the greens playing fast and true.
Three players were co-men of the match with A Flight’s JP Maffray emerging the match winner in the resulting count back. JP received the magnificent lead crystal glass engraved trophy.
John Nalty, Mike Allidi and Ed Wyckoff were all tied on even par rounds and the first count back of the day (and there was many) dictated that they ascend the podium in that order. Irishman Connie Walsh edged Peter ‘the right honourable’ LeNoury on count back for fifth spot.
D Flight provided the overall runner-up in the shape of Aiden Murray and his 38 points. Jim Elphick and John Hartigan were separated by count back, both three shots adrift of Aiden with Jim holding the silver. Ulrik Sindling filled the fourth place as smoking Joe Tynan rounded out the flight.
The third overall spot was to be filled by C Flight’s Barry Tregurtha with his 38 points. Barry was followed by Irishman Tom Gory a stroke back, while Colm Mullen was a further stroke back from Tom. Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby edged Nick Shaw for the fourth spot as his back nine was more favourably dispersed.
Terry Mangan was the main benefactor in B Flight with a steady even par round. Terry was one clear of a pair of players tied a shot back, namely Brian ‘the unbalanced’ Wilkinson and Chris Martin. Chris conceded the count back as long as Brian did not tell him about his game (and thank your lucky stars). Time to replace the batteries in the calculator as it was out again as three vied on 33 pts but the luck of the Irish held sway for Tom Byrne as he got the fourth spot.
Nobody got to drive the car home but there were five 2’s from Ed Wyckoff, Chaten Patel, Ben Durham, Tom Byrne and Bruce Walters.
Back at Lewiinski’s and after the presentation, incoming Captain Christy Knight thanked everyone who took part, the Lewiinski’s staff for all their hard work, the outgoing Captain for turning up, and the scribe for his fine write-ups (his words not mine).
Brad and Nong raised 12,300 baht on the par 12th par three ‘hit the green comp’ and an anonymous donor doubled that amount before it was added to the 20,000 kindly donated by the Pattaya Sports Club, making a total of 42,300 baht for the Baan Jing Jai orphanage.
Monday, Feb. 10, Khao Kheow B & C - Stableford

1st Peter Ennis (13) 39pts
2nd Peter Kelly (12) 38pts
3rd Bruce Anderson (10) 38pts
B Flight
1st Eddy Beilby (18) 40pts
2nd Jim Lanzo (19) 37pts
3rd Brian Wilkinson (15) 36pts
C Flight
1st Tom Morrisroe (24) 38pts
2nd Jorn Finnerup (26) 37pts
3rd Fergus O’Brian (23) 33pts
Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby was the story of the day as he was perched on the top step of the B Flight podium with a excellent man of the match 40 points. Eddy was one clear of A Flight’s top man Peter Ennis who had a rock solid 39 points. The ‘Eagle’ was followed up the podium steps by the steady Jim Lanzo on 37 points and Brian ‘the unbalanced’ Wilkinson closed the flight with a even par round.
Peter Ennis was closely followed up the podium steps by the duo of Peter Kelly and Bruce Anderson, the resulting count back handing Peter the silver.
Tom Morison took the honours in C Flight with a steady 38 pts; Tom was one stroke clear of Jorn Finnerup and six clear of Fergus O’Brian.
The 2’s were shared between Peter Ennis, Peter Kelly, Vincent Connelan, Derek Winless and Eamon Doyle.

1st John Hartigan (22) 40pts
2nd Barry Oats (22) 39pts
3rd Jim Elphick (21) 36pts
4th Tom Morrisroe (24) 36pts
John ‘the Irish rover’ Hartigan and Michael Delatraz were co-men of the match as they posted joint best 40 points scores. John was followed in the junior flight by Barry Oats a single stroke back. Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick made his second visit to the pay window in as many games but needed a count back decision over Tom Morrisroe who took the fourth place due to the large turnout, this was Tom’s second pay window visit as well.
Michael was chased home in the senior flight by a trio of players all with even par rounds, Eric Gobert, Connie Walsh and Dominic Downey, and the following count back dictated that they climb the podium steps in that order.
Top man in the middle flight was Freddy’ the quite one’ Startreck who was also trailed in by a group of three players on even par rounds, Jim Lanzo, the irrepressible Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan and Michael Stafford who ascended the podium steps in that order.
Michael Delatraz, Pat Duane, Maurice Roberts, Mike Pearson and John Heaney shared the 2’s pot.
Wednesday, Feb. 12, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Thierry Petrement (13) 44pts
2nd Eric Gobert (4) 36pts
3rd John Nalty (12) 36pts
B Flight
1st Paul Robinson (16) 41pts
2nd Peter Henshaw (17) 38pts
3rd Tony Dolphin (18) 35pts
C Flight
1st Jorn Finnerup (26) 36pts
2nd Tom Morrisoe (24) 35pts
3rd Paul Gibson (28) 31pts
Thierry Petrement, everybody’s nice guy, dazzled most of the field with his man of the man of the match and A Flight winning spectacular 44 points. The only man near to him was B Flight’s Paul Robinson with 41 points.
Thierry was followed up the podium steps by Eric Gobert who bettered John Nalty’s even par round on count back. John was not to disappointed as he split a very healthy 2’s pot with Jim Lanzo.
Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw took the silver in B Flight three shots in arrears of Paul Robinson while Tony Dolphin rounded out the flight a further three shots back.
Irishman Jorn Finnerup made it two pay window visits this week as he sat atop the C Flight with a steady even par round. Jorn was one clear of Tom Morrisroe who the pay master knows by name after he made it three pay window visits in the week. Paul Gibson closed the flight with 31 points.
Thursday, Feb. 13, Crystal Bay B & C - Stableford
A Flight
1st Derek Winless (9) 40pts
2nd Max Scott (5) 34pts
3rd Maurice Roberts (14) 33pts
B Flight
1st Tom Gorey (19) 40pts
2nd Paul Robinson (16) 39pts
3rd Charles Cunningham (17) 38pts
C Flight
1st Aiden Murray (23) 37pts
2nd Brad Robins (21) 36pts
3rd Michel Scaglione (24) 36pts
It was the Co. Wexford man Tom Gorey along with Derek Winless who vied for the man of the match award, both with 40 points each. Derek in A Flight was six clear of Aussie star Max Scott, although Max did have a half share of an excellent ‘2’s pot. Max was a further shot clear of Maurice Roberts and Pat ‘the Irish rover’ Hanafin. Maurice counted up better on the inward nine to capture the bronze as the luck of the Irish deserted Pat.
Tom’s 40 points in B Flight was followed by Paul Robinson a shot back and Charles Cunningham a further stroke off the pace.
Aiden Murray was the man to catch in C Flight and for the golfer of the month as his purple patch continues with 37 rock solid points. Aiden was a shot clear of Brad Robins and Michel Scaglione. Alas for Michel his acumen on the course did not transfer to the scorecard as Brad had the better of the count back.
Billy Briton was the player who got to share the 2’s pot with Max.
Friday, Feb. 14, Silky Oak - Stableford
A Flight
1st Mike Allidi (3) 38pts
2nd Dominic Downey (12) 37pts
3rd Derek Winless (9) 36pts
B Flight
1st Gerry Roche (20) 34pts
2nd Colin Davis (18) 32pts
3rd Terry Mangan (15) 31pts
C Flight
1st Fergus O’Brien (23) 34pts
2nd Silvano Pizzato (23) 33pts
3rd Tom Morrisroe (24) 31pts
Although Fridays at Silky Oak can be a traffic challenge, the risk is always worth it to play a most enjoyable layout. The good sized outing was split into our usual three flights and the venue choice suited Mike Allidi and a flight mate Dominic Downey as they were the only players to better their handicaps. Derek Winless reversed his surname and made it a second podium visit in as many games.
It was a case of the donkey between two shamrocks in B Flight as Gerry Roche and Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan sandwiched the GM.
It was the irrepressible Fergus Brian who was the main benefactor in C Flight with a steady 34 points while Silvano Pizzato (try saying that ten times holding your tongue) came home a shot adrift for the silver. There is a groove in the tiles from were Tom Morrisroe sits in Lewiinski’s to the pay window as he made his forth visit of the week.
Eight players shared the 2’s pot
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd Soi13/13 near Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Williams & Kelly shoot the lights out

IPGC golf from The Tara Court Golf Group

Michael Williams and Declan Kelly.

Sunday, Feb. 9, St. Andrews - Stableford
We were at St Andrews today for a pleasant change and even better we were there at Green Valley prices as they moved us over to accommodate Lewiinski’s for their Captain’s Day.
As usual it was a pleasure to play this course with it’s beautiful fairways and fast greens. While it can actually be a very difficult layout, some of our players today made it look very easy with fantastic scores. Michael Williams had the best of the day with 45 points to win the B Flight and was closely followed by Declan Kelly who had 43 and was the winner of the A Flight.
Teddy Lodge was second in A Flight with 35 points and third was Barney Sheedy with 34. Second in B Flight was Frank Bradley with 36 and third was Brendan Roddy with 34.
Unfortunately we had to say goodbye to Teddy Lodge as this was his last game for this trip, he will be missed very much as he had been checking all the score cards and doing the presentation for us for the past few months.
A Flight
1st Declan Kelly (15) 43pts
2nd Teddy Lodge (11) 35pts
3rd Barney Sheedy (10) 34pts
B Flight
1st Michael Williams (20) 45pts
2nd Frank Bradley (18) 36pts
3rd Brendan Roddy (24) 34pts
2’s: Barney Sheedy and John Fetherston
Tuesday, Feb. 11, Pattana & Thursday, Feb. 13, Burapha

The Cup was won by Johan Collins with a combined score of 78 points and two of our regular players, Tony Pike and Robert Hanson, came in second and third with 72 and 71 points respectively.
We will all be looking forward to playing in it again next year and reclaiming the Cup for one of our regular players. Thanks goes to the management of The Tara Court for their sponsorship and the beautiful meal for the presentation.

A re-Peter for LeNoury as Moraghan cans an ‘Ace’

PSC golf from The Golf Club

Barry Murnin, Ray Powell, Peter LeNoury, Bob Mulholland and Sonny Crawford.

Monday, Feb. 10, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford
A Flight
1st Peter LeNoury (10) 41pts
2nd Bob Mulholland (8) 39pts
3rd Sonny Crawford (9) 39pts
4th Chaten Patel (13) 39pts
B Flight
1st Barry Tregurtha (19) 38pts
2nd Ray Powell (16) 35pts
3rd Barry Murnin (17) 34pts
4th Geoff Doody (25) 34pts
We have been chock-a-block these last few weeks and it has not died out yet. 36 golfers of all handicaps joined us on Monday for our regular visit to Green Valley. Despite thousands of rounds here, the course is still in really good shape. The cool weather still prevails in the evenings, but it is warming up in the daytime on the golf courses now.

Ray Powell, Mark Wood, Kevin “Ace” Moraghan, and John Emmerson.

He won here the previous week with a 38 and won it again today, but this time with a stunning 41. I am beginning to think Peter LeNoury likes this course! Peter plays golf every day…and I mean every day. Except for the fact that last month he cracked a few ribs (but not at our BBQ night) and had to take a few days off, Peter is always up for a game. Well played mate, especially off your new 10 handicap.
Brad Sproxton was kind enough to fill in for Cap’t. Phil while on holiday, so as guest manager he decided to employ 2 flights and the count back system for today’s comp. The dreaded countback can be cruel to some, but not for Bob Mulholland as his 22 Stableford points on the back put him at the top of a trio of 39’s. Bob will be reading this from back in Scotland as he had to return to work. See you next time pal!
Another departure was also on the flight list as Sonny Crawford was winging his way back to his base in Korea for a few months. Sonny shot a great 21 on the back, which would usually be good enough. Also at 39 but just 18 on the backside was our pal Chaten Patel who couldn’t quite match his brilliant 9 holes on the front side.
In the B Flight (15 handicap and above) it was all Barry Tregurtha as ‘Bazza’ finished a full 3 points ahead of the rest. The Sultan of Soi Dao continued his fine form that started with last month’s Mulberry Ryder Cup. Ray Powell was in the frame again with a 35 and Barry “Good” Murnin tied with Geoff Doody on 34 to finish off the podium placings.
Wednesday, Feb. 12, St. Andrews (white tees) – Stableford
1st Ray Powell (16) 40pts
2nd Mark Wood (9) 39pts
T3rd Kevin Moraghan (15) 38pts
T3rd John Emmerson (15) 38pts
There was only one big story of the day here, as Kevin Moraghan took only one swing with a 6-iron that flew 177 yards on the 3rd hole at St. Andrews for a hole-in one! It’s not his first though - young Kevin was only 7 years old when he had his first ace, so it has been a bit of a wait for ace number 2!
The beauty of that 3rd hole is that it is all downhill so you can track it the whole way. Screams were heard as far away as Silky Oaks, so I am told. Way to go Kevin! Remember, this is the number 1 handicap hole here at St. Andrews, so this is a great feat. Being the generous guy that he is, Kevin rang the bell not once, but twice, and those screams of joy from the lads here were also heard as far away as Silky Oaks.
Kevin’s regular playing partner John Emmerson ended up with a 38 on the day for a same-same score off the same-same handicap as the lads split the booty for joint third. Next up the ladder was me old mate Mark Wood as he carded a 39 for a great round of golf at this challenging track.
But today nobody could match the affable Englishman Ray Powell who had a heck of a round with a whopping 40 points to end up top of the heap! Ray looks to be one to watch for the Monthly Medal for sure. Ray had a perfectly consistent game today with 20 points on the front and 20 on the back.
Thursday, Feb. 13, Bangpakong (yellow tees) – Stableford
1st Yuzru Yamasaki (19) 40pts
2nd Rod Stevens (23) 40pts
3rd Reg Glass (15) 39pts
It was a howling wind that greeted us at Bangpakong, as if the course weren’t tough enough already. The layout was in fine shape for the most part, but had a few patches of brown due to the lack of water as most course are experiencing these days. This is a great course and is always a popular venue, even if it is another 15 minutes drive it is worth it.
Sometimes, but not often enough, everything just seems to go right on the golf course. There is neither rhyme nor reason to it; it must be in the stars. It was that kind of day for our Canadian buddy Rod Stevens as he shot the best round of golf in ages and proudly posted a massive 40 points on the card. Visiting Yuzru Yamasaki also ended up with a fine score of 40 so congrats to these 2 guys who actually tamed Bangpakong.
Reg ‘have another” Glass brought in a fine 39 that would have been a winner on another day’s outing, but better luck next time Reg.
Thanks to all who joined us for another great week of golf in paradise!

Cleaver the standout at Greenwood

Travellers Rest Golf Group

Andy Rich
It was good to see an increase in the turnout this week after the gradual decline of the last couple of weeks. It would appear that the terrible weather in the USA and Europe has had a side effect of persuading a number of golfers to head off to warmer climes in Thailand.

Jim Cleaver.

With the increased competition it also meant that two divisions were needed most days and it was also good to see different names appearing on the top of each leader board as the prizes were shared around.
Monday, Feb. 10, Greenwood - Stableford
On Monday it was off to the ever-popular Greenwood (A and B courses) and with no rain for more than a month now the fairways were looking a little bare and it was more like playing links golf, with the ball running on a considerable distance and the greens very fast. Maybe that would explain why only one golfer played to his handicap.
Division 1’s Jim Cleaver was that man, taking a well-earned rest from nappy changing. I should clarify that I meant changing his new son’s nappies and not his own, he is not that old yet. Alan Thomas, a man in form, was second and Neil Bramley was third.
In Division 2 it was gentleman Jack Macnamara who took the honours by just pipping Jim Cooper on count back, with Reg Glass close behind in third.
Div. 1 (0-12)
1st Jim Cleaver (9) 36pts
2nd Alan Thomas (5) 35pts
3rd Neil Bramley (10) 33pts
Div. 2 (13+)
1st Jack Macnamara (17) 34 pts
2nd Jim Cooper (14) 34 pts
3rd Reg Glass (15) 33pts
Tuesday, Feb. 11, Green Valley - Stableford
Tuesday it was back to Green Valley with just one division. Alan Thomas once again proved that cream rises to the top as he showed the rest the way home with a very creditable 38pts. Ken Brehm, despite a cut to his handicap, came through into second place and my cribbage partner Derek Thorogood took third.

Tewin ‘Poopay’ Lamthong.

1st Alan Thomas (5) 38pts
2nd Ken Brehm (15) 36pts
3rd Derek Thorogood (16) 36pts
Thursday, Feb. 13, The Emerald - Stableford
On Thursday the largest field of the week headed off to Emerald to keep up the green theme going. In Division 1 Martin Cooper took the green blazer, with Trevor Nash second and disgruntled Man U fan Ben Durham in third. Don’t worry Ben you are not alone, I keep running into disgruntled Man U fans I am happy to tell you.
In Division 2 it was good to see the ladies get into the act after a long absence. Tewin Poopay Lamthong took off her nurse’s uniform after nursing other half Fergus Brennan back to health and stormed off with first prize, with Mod Chaviraksa looking a new woman in second. Jim Cooper trooped in third.
Div.1 (0-11)
1st Martin Cooper (4) 38pts
2nd Trevor Nash (11) 36pts
3rd Ben Durham (10) 33pts
Div.2 (12+)
1st Tewin Poopay Lamthong (12) 35pts
2nd Mod Chaviraksa (12) 34pts
3rd Jim Cooper (14) 32pts
Saturday, Feb. 15, Crystal Bay - Stableford
The week’s competitions drew to a close on Saturday at Crystal Bay (B and C courses). In Division 1, Irishman Niall Cronin held off the ever-sprightly Larry Simpson but only on count back, with Ed Brubaker in third.
In Division 2, master of the curving golf ball Tim Dalton proved too good for the rest but only just. It took another count back to separate him from Derek Thorogood in second and John Baxter snuck into third.
Div.1 (0-14)
1st Niall Cronin (12) 38pts
2nd Larry Simpson (9) 38pts
3rd Ed Brubaker (14) 36pts
Div.2 (15+)
1st Tim Dalton (19) 38pts
2nd Derek Thorogood (16) 38pts
3rd John Baxter (15) 36pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like to play a round of golf with the TRGG, please phone Fergus Brennan on 086 056 7019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name to the weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.

Wichai records back to back wins

Jomtien golf with the IPGC

(L to R): Howard Stanley, Randy Flello and Matti Pihlajisto.

Monday, Feb. 10, Pattavia – Stableford
Nine groups tee off on time today in 2 flights and the best score was returned in division 2 by Burnie Sinclair, winning with 38 points. After scoring 23 points on the front nine Jim Ferris only managed 12 on the back to take second place and Cliff Elliott beat Rudi Schaefer 18/13 on the back nine for third after they both came in with 31’s.
There were four 33’s returned in division 1 and with count backs of 18/17/16/14, Jarmo Sulavori claimed top spot ahead of Don Head, Nik Evans and Pete Sumner in second, third and fourth respectively.
Near pins went to Don Head, Ken, Wichai Tananusorn, Jim Ferris, Randy Flello and Mauri Friman.
Wichai birdied the 7th to scoop the rollover ‘2’s pot in division 1 and Jim Ferris did the same in division 2 with a birdie on the 4th.
Wednesday, Feb. 12, The Emerald - Stableford
Another good turnout today and three divisions with the cut coming at 6-16, 17-20 and 21+. The best score of the day came in division 1 from Wichai Tananusorn, who won with 36 points ahead of Don Head in second with 34 and Dennis Scougal took third with 33.

In his last game with us before returning to China, Bob Poole topped division 2 standings with 34 points and Howard Stanley was second on 32, beating Matti Pihlajisto on a 19/16 back nine count back.
Randy Flello with 33 points won division 3, beating Burnie Sinclair by two points, and Magne Gunnarson beat Jim Connelly and Joe Kubon on a 10/8/7 back six count back for third after they all came in on 30 points.
Near pins were claimed by Don Head (2), Bryan Rought, Wichai Tananusorn, Miss Nut, Finn Olsen (2) and Matti Pihlajisto.
Chris Voller and Wichai both birdied the 7th and Wichai also the 15th to share the ‘2’s pot in division 1 and Jim Connelly and Finn Olsen did likewise in division 3. It was an amazing ‘2’ for Jim, scoring it on the first hole here with his second shot with a five wood from about 160 yards out.
Friday, Feb. 14, Eastern Star - Stableford
The largest turnout of the week here today with 11groups going out and in division 1 (5-15) in the frame again was Wichai Tananusorn who won with 36 points. Bill Bertram was second one point behind Wichai and playing off 6 now Ron Miller took third with 34.

Near Pins: A3 Peter Hammond, A5 Peter Bygballe, B3 Steen Habersaat, B8 Mike Winfield
Long Putts: A9 Jacky Wan, B9 Jack Robertson
The course at Khao Kheow was in fine condition today and it continues to improve every month. It was rather busy so we had a slowish round of 4 hours and 40 minutes. Back in the clubhouse welcomes went out to Jacky Wan from Hong Kong and Kenneth Madsen from Denmark and a goodbye to Hugh O’Donnell.
We had two flights today and Richard Kubicki ran away with the A Flight with an amazing 45 points. Kristin Helgason came second with a fine 41 points and Mashi Kaneta was third on a count back from Elias Magnusson, both on 37’s.
Gordon Clegg topped the B Flight on a count back from Jack Robertson, both returning very fine 43-point scores, and Steen Habersaat took third with 40 ahead of 83-years young Hugh O’Donnell in fourth.

Locke wins on a slow day at Plutaluang

PSC golf from The Billabong Golf Bar

Monday, Feb. 10, Silky Oak - Stableford
Silky Oak was our venue for golf today and the course was in grand condition although the greens were a bit tricky. We played from the white markers so as not to make it too hard for the older golfers to get over the numerous water carries, which are quite long on some holes.
With two different tee times, owing to the course being busy, it was up to Cottee and Eng to run the show from the 7.20 first tee time, then George Barrie looked after the other three groups teeing off at 8.25. My thanks to you both for doing such a great job!
The scores were quite good with John Locke taking third spot on 34 points ahead of Noddy Moyle in fourth on count back. Second place went to Liz Collier with 35 points and coming in first was Neil Carter with 36.
There was only one ‘2’ today, coming from Noddy Moyle.
Friday, Feb. 14, Plutaluang - Stableford
A very slow but enjoyable day out at Plutaluang golf course today with the five groups taking five and a bit hours to get around, but nobody was complaining at the watering holes.
Rosco hadn’t played this course for a number of years and was surprised at the condition. We played West and North, which in my opinion are two of the best trials of golf around the area and it reflected in the scoring with two thirds of the field scoring under 29 points.
Fourth place today went to John Player and the three above him were knotted together on 34 points. The subsequent count back saw John Locke take first place ahead of Chaten Patel and Noddy Moyle in that order.
There were two ‘2’s today, coming from Paul Greenaway and Bill Marsden.
Note: If you are looking for a game, give Bob a call on 082 204 3411 or call into the bar at Mabprachan Lake and put your name on the sign-up sheet.

The Phoenix Rises

Since last November 1st when the new owners of Phoenix (what is now known as Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club) implemented a new price structure for both guests and members, the attendance at the course has diminished dramatically. Many members who preferred to walk decided not to bow to the demand of having to pay for a cart, as well as an annual subscription fee on top of a ‘play as you go’ maintenance fee remaining in place.
Now some 3 months down the line quite a few members have conceded to the new price structure and paid the annual fee, along with the other fees and are now back playing at the course of their choice. I say of their choice simply because many members are still boycotting the club but playing at other courses, not out of preference but because of financial reasons. No doubt some will disagree with this statement but basically that’s all it comes down to.
There is hope that there will be some concessions by the management (some have already been put in place), however this is 2014 and things have changed from when we were getting top class conditions for very little. Financial changes (for the worse) are inevitable as time goes by. Sounds like a cue for a song!
There are many ideas and much speculation with regard to what may happen but at the end of the day only the new owners and management (maybe) know exactly what their agenda for the future is.
Some changes have taken place regarding the course over the last six months, including a complete overall of the Ocean course where many bunkers have been changed or removed, but with many new ones being introduced. Many of the big bushes have been removed and also many trees so as to thin them out a little and allow the sun to get through to the ground, which in turn promoted better growth of grass.
Luckily when all this work was being carried out the greens were not included within any maintenance work and are still superb in all aspects. However, much of the other work carried out has not had enough time to settle in and the general condition of the Ocean course is still a little below its best. Putting far too much sand in the bunkers has proved to be disastrous with little or no chance of playing normal bunker shots (especially the longer handicapper). In conclusion, regarding the Ocean course it is still by far the best nine holes (visually) with many splendid views and a good variation of layout.
The Mountain and Lake courses were not touched during the low season and they too have problems with areas off the fairways with little growth of grass in between the trees. Some tree felling is now taking place to remedy this problem and eventually this problem should be eradicated.
Sadly the greens on both of these courses have deteriorated significantly, and whilst we are in the middle of what is called the high season, renovation work has been carried out on the greens with much hollow tyning and sanding, which has been quite annoying when you consider that the greens of Phoenix have always been some of the best in the area for many years. However it looks like this is coming to an end and the greens should now receive the benefit of this work and improve dramatically. Rain is required though as the course is very dry off fairways at present.
So, for what used to be a frustrating time of the year with too many tourists causing major delays at every drinks hut we now have the beauty and comfort of getting round the course in approx 3 to 4 hours maximum, depending on the size of the group playing. Even if you are a two-ball it seems the etiquette is better and four & five ball groups are standing to one side to let smaller groups play through.
To this end it seems that with a little help and some common sense from the owners and management of Phoenix, playing conditions should improve for the future.
It is noticeable that many members are now creeping back and succumbing to the fees demanded purely because this is where they wish to play. Some representatives from all major members groups are now evident at the course but in fairness in a minority of numbers.
As some of you may be aware, I formed the Phoenix Members Golf Society group some five years ago but over the last 3 months this society has now disbanded over the problematic issues caused by the new ownership of the course. At present only a small amount of the original society are interested in playing at Phoenix and we would very much like to increase these numbers to about 8 to 12 in number maximum. This will ensure very little in the way of logistical problems, with a quicker time scale to complete any game.
No group name will be adopted and we are just looking for the right people with the right attitude to the game to join in, for what may be “a decision on the day as to the format of play.”
Obviously it would seem that members will be the majority of people interested in this idea but non-members will be welcome, bearing in mind the visitors fees that exist. These are 2,500 baht green fee, Monday to Friday (3,000 baht weekends), 600 baht for a compulsorily cart (one person only) and 350 baht caddy fee.
As members we can offer a discount of 30% off the green fees (only) by signing you in as a member’s guest. This reduces the midweek fee to 1,750 baht plus the other charges.
If anyone is interested please contact me on 087 091 7565 or email, mikegerrard1944 @gmail.com.
At present we are playing every Monday and Friday, at around midday, but with the introduction of new names, new ideas can be adopted and everything is negotiable and changeable.
Mike Gerrard.

Old heads guide PCC to victory in a nail-biting finish

Pattaya Cricket Club’s John Spiers (right) bowls one of the tense final few overs against Indorama at the Thai Polo Club, Sunday, Feb. 16.

It required the experienced players of Pattaya Cricket Club at the death to ensure the club recorded its 3rd straight league victory against Indorama last Sunday and remain top of the Bangkok Cricket League.
On an unusually overcast and breezy morning at the Thai Polo Ground, PCC were asked to bat first and the new opening partnership of Dan (17) and Venky began positively. It was Venky in particular who took advantage of the fielding restrictions against some surprisingly quick bowling as he regularly cleared the infield with a fluent 45.

Indorama’s Dhiraj (right) hits out on his way to a brilliant 102.

At drinks after 13 overs PCC were 77 for 1 and well set for an aggressive last 12 over onslaught. John Spiers (31) and the club captain Simon Philbrook (44) did not disappoint with another telling partnership of 79 to maintain the momentum.
Despite Salman managing to pull a groin whilst gently ambling a single, Dave Callick (13no), who thankfully had arrived at the right ground, just, and Thomas Manoj (9no) saw PCC post an impressive 182/4. It was an excellent batting display that the increasing crowd of spectators enjoyed and they expressed their appreciation by ordering rounds of beer at a speed akin to the game’s run rate.
After a short break and an unseasonal 5 minute shower the PCC opening bowlers, in the absence of Salman who had now self-diagnosed his injury as a 3rd degree groin muscle tear, Thomas and Hamza started with an immaculate line and length spell and they reduced Indorama to 35/4 from 8 overs.

It seemed an improbable position from which Indorama could challenge the target but Dhiraj (102) had other ideas. In a beautifully timed innings he single-handedly grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and the impetus slowly but surely swung away from PCC. With just 40 runs required from the final 5 overs and still 5 wickets in hand it seemed Indorama would pull off an unlikely victory.
The captain called on the old heads of Thomas and John Spiers who returned to the attack and bowled perhaps the game changing overs. Thomas conceded only 1 run in the 21st over and John removed Dhiraj in the 22nd for what would normally have been a match winning century.
The game was still in the balance with 16 needed from the final over to be bowled by Andy Emery and despite 8 runs from the first three deliveries his old head remained on his shoulders as he closed the innings out (175/8) for a nail biting 7 run victory.
It was a terrific and unpredictable game of cricket that kept PCC on top of the league and well placed for a final play-off berth at the end of the season.
The bar was duly restocked for the exuberant spectators and elated players who celebrated the fraught victory well into the now sunny afternoon.
PCC travel this weekend to Chiang Mai for the annual weekend of cricket with Chiang Mai CC, Lanna CC and Phuket CC at the famous Gymkhana Cricket Ground, to be followed the next weekend with a double-header of the British Club on Saturday 1st March and Siam CC in a league game on Sunday 2nd, both at home at the Thai Polo Ground.
PCC would like to express their gratitude to Pattaya Sports Club for their invaluable support.
For anyone interested in all matters related to PCC, please refer to the club website www. pattayacricketclub.com or visit the Facebook page for more details. The club has an open door policy and welcomes any like minded cricket enthusiasts of any age or ability.
