LeBlanc shoots the lights out at Khao Kheow

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

(From left): Bob Mattes, Mal Ovens, Chris Thompson and Ian Parry.

Monday, Jan. 13, Burapha - Stableford
A very windy and cool day greeted the 29 Outbackers who played the A and B course off the blue tees but there were many more players generally this week and a shortage of caddies, both of which created a much slower than usual round.
Chris Thompson had the day’s best score of 38pts to win Div B from the consistent Bob Mattes with 37pts playing off 25, having already come down 3 shots since starting to play with the Outback. He will be cut again today and will find himself off 23 next time he plays! Keep it up Bob, some great golf! Stephen Blazsanyik (34) and Scott Wilson (32) filled the other two minor places.

Bob Mattes with Eddy Beilby, Sugar Ray Handford and Peter LeNoury.

Broome visitor, Mal Ovens won Div A with 36pts from last week’s winner Geoff Stimpson (35) with lefty, Ian Parry on 34 and Peter Erickson, who is just starting to show some form, with 33. Mal heard about the Outback from Fidge and Al Bryce (hello guys) and we had his company for a few games, we look forward to seeing you again on your next visit to Pattaya.
There were only two ‘2’s, both on B3, from Mal Ovens & Bob Lindborg.
Div A (0-18)
1st Mal Ovens (18) 36pts
2nd Geoff Stimpson (9) 35pts
3rd Ian Parry (13) 34pts
4th Peter Erikson (6) 33pts
Div B (19+)
1st Chris Thompson (24) 38pts
2nd Bob Mattes (25) 37pts
3rd Stephen Blazsanyik (19) 34pts
4th Scott Wilson (21) 32pts
Wednesday, Jan. 15, Khao Kheow – Stableford
The condition of this course has come on in leaps and bounds, certainly underlining that all the maintenance work carried out during the low season was well worthwhile. 25 players here today to play the best two nines, the A & B loops from the yellow tees.
Starting on A straight into almost a gale, everybody knew they were in for a stern test of golf, particularly for the first four holes, with the par 3 third with the water all the way down the right, ranking as the third toughest of the day! Second hardest was the very next hole, the par four 4th (Index 1) and coming as no surprise, the most difficult being the par four 18th (B9).

The Fairplay group.

With so many players on a handicap of 19, it was difficult to split the field into balanced divisions, so the decision was taken divide the field into three grades, with two places only in each. Div A found themselves with the worst scores of the day as Steve Plant’s 30pts was enough to win from Kym Thompson’s 29.
John Fitzgerald’s last round of his holiday proved to be a winning one, as his 36pts won Div B from John Lawton on 32 but the round of the day by far came from Greg LeBlanc, who shrugged off the wind all day to record a brilliant 43pts off his 28 handicap, which included three no score holes! Ed Turner also played very well for his 38pts to take second and despite Suzi’s two whiffs on the same hole, her 37pts also deserves a mention.
Again there were only two ‘2’s from Suzi Lawton (B8) & Greg Hill (A5).
Div A (0-16)
1st Steve Plant (13) 30pts
2nd Kym Thompson (14) 29pts
Div B (17-19)
1st John Fitzgerald (19) 36pts
2nd John Lawton (19) 32pts
Div C (20+)
1st Greg LeBlanc (28) 43pts
2nd Ed Turner (21) 38pts
Friday, Jan. 17, Green Valley – Stableford
With a breeze blowing and a slight chill in the air, 50 players turned out for Green Valley, which included twelve players who were partaking in “Fairplay’s” inaugural mystery tour. Fairplay are a golfing group from Bangkok, led by Scott and Graeme, who play every Wednesday at the Thana City course and are good friends of the Outback. General Jack has said that he intends to organise a similar mystery tour later in the year, so watch out for the flyer.
We had a slight problem (well, actually quite a big problem) with the lack of caddies and although those who had pre-booked were mostly OK, many hadn’t and it was pot luck when and if you actually got one; many of them having already done one round. However, I don’t really think anyone had to wait too long before a caddie appeared but it certainly gave me a headache or two sorting out the start; which was not helped by three Korean groups who didn’t get up for their designated start time and eventually played in the middle of the Outback field.
Some very consistent scoring today, especially in Div B which Sugar won with a very fine 41pts. But two back from him, were three players all on 39, namely Bob Finley, Eddy Beilby and Sel Wegner, who finished in that order after the usual c/b.
The top score came from Bob Mattes in Div C, who apparently hit some great stuff off the tee and his 42pts today will see his handicap tumble again to 21, which is down from 28 when he started playing with the Outback in mid December; 5 of those lost shots coming this month! CONGU, the preferred system used by the Outback for visitors and non-PSC players is working well.
A distant second in Div C was John Player with 35pts, who beat runaway Wednesday’s winner at Khao Kheow, Greg LeBlanc on 34, who had had his handicap cut by three since then.
The top division went to Peter LeNoury with 37pts four clear of three players all with 33, Steve Mann, Peter Erikson and Ian Heddle.
Finally, welcome to a couple of newbies to the Outback, Greg Vawdrey and Jon Adler.
There were four ‘2’s from Greg Vawdrey & Steve Plant (4th) and Stephen Mann & Bob Finley (12th).
Div A (0-13)
1st Peter LeNoury (11) 37pts
2nd Stephen Mann (10) 33pts
3rd Peter Erikson (6) 33pts
4th Ian Heddle (3) 33pts
Div B (14-18)
1st Sugar Ray Handford (18) 41pts
2nd Bob Finley (16) 39pts
3rd Eddy Beilby (18) 39pts
4th Sel Wegner (15) 39pts
Div C (19+)
1st Bob Mattes (23) 42pts
2nd John Player (19) 35pts
3rd Greg LeBlanc (25) 34pts
4th Bob Lindborg (21) 34pts

Wednesday, Jan. 15,Eastern Star - Stableford
1st Mark Williams (8) 37pts
2nd Phil Cawse (16) 34pts
3 Ted Gardner (7) 34pts
Wednesday was our away game of the week and we took the trip to Eastern Star. We arrived in good time before our scheduled booking and were surprised to be told by the starter that 9 groups had still to tee off before us. After arguments with the management we managed to cut this down to 4 groups ahead of us. I am sure we have all experienced this but it does get very annoying.

Mark Williams.

Mark Williams took the day with 37 points, three ahead of Phil Cawse and Ted Gardner who had to be separated by count back.
Friday, Jan. 17, Green Valley - Stableford
1st Roger Rush (17) 43pts
2 Mel Davis (18) 39pts
3 Mark Williams (8) 39pts
4 Peter Henderson (21) 37pts
5 Ted Gardner (7) 35pts
Roger Rush shot the round of the week on Friday, a magnificent 43 points to take the win ahead of Mel Davis and Mark Williams, both tied on 39 but with Mel taking second on count back. Peter Henderson and Ted Gardner completed the podium.
Note: The Caddyshack is located on Soi 17 off 3rd Road or soi 8 off Thepprasit Road. All golfers are welcome and reservations are taken at 081 865 3104.

Wichai’s in the pink

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

PGS Championship winners (left-right): Iain Wilson, Dave Plaiter, David Thomas (PGS Captain), John Chelo and Wichai Tananusorn.

A large field of Pattaya Golf Society golfers visited Crystal Bay to play a stableford event on Monday, 13th January and were given the A/B option, only to find the C nine was substituted after nine holes making changes necessary to the individuals’ score indexes on the cards.
The course was quite presentable but the C nine greens were scruffy and slower than those on the front, thus making scoring a touch more unpredictable. However, on a day when chaos was on the cards in Bangkok serenity ruled at Crystal Bay as the golfers set about their business.
With the cut at seventeen and under the second flight saw Dave Wilkinson take third place with very solid 33 points whilst the flight win was shared by John Chelo and the gentle golfing giant Michael McGuigan, both bon 35 points.
In the top flight Dave Cadwallader overcame problems with his shoulder to post 37 points and share second place with Mike Earley whilst Wichai Tananusorn set a tremendous pace on the front nine only to see it dissipate on the back nine greens. He still took the day however with an excellent effort totalling 39 points.
The ‘2’s pot was shared by Jim Ferris, Larry Slattery, Andrew Purdie and Mike Earley. Pity Andrew Purdie with 35 points on his final round this trip as he failed to putt out on a hole on the front nine, thinking he did not have a shot, only to find the change of track by the starter would have given him one. One day they’ll get it right. Khun Wichai certainly did!
Smith & Chelo take Championship honours
The Pattaya Golf Society played its Annual Championships on Wednesday and Friday, 15th and 17th January at two very challenging courses, Green Valley and Bangpra. A strong breeze was in evidence all week and on both courses the greens were hard and running at a fast speed. Thus the thirty plus competitors had their work cut out on both days to make progress in the event.
As the first day unwound at Green Valley, pre-tournament favourites Chris Smith and Iain Wilson both left shots on the course and the first day leaders in the Gross Championship were Wichai Tananusorn (79), and Marc Jensen and Iain Wilson, both with 81. In the Net Championship second and third place were held by Wichai and Mike Earley on 71 and 73 respectively whilst Canadian golfer John Chelo posted net 70 for the halfway lead.
The second day dawned bright and very breezy at Bangpra and with play getting underway thirty minutes early, more than a few golfers were caught out with the typical Bangpra greens. Scores were much higher in the conditions and the best gross figures of the day involved the pairing of Chris Smith and Iain Wilson with Chris’ 75 just pipping the Scot’s fine effort of 76.
In the net competition the best score was recorded again by John Chelo with net 73. This left Chris Smith and Iain Wilson sharing the Gross Champion title with 157 but as Chris had the better second eighteen on count back, 75 to 76, he was deemed the new PGS Champion. The Net Champion was John Chelo with an excellent one under 143, with Wichai Tananusorn as runner-up with 145.
It had been one of the best PGS Championships for many a year and all the golfers are to be congratulated for their efforts on the two tough courses. Other presentations included the PGS Player of the Year award for 2013 and a smiling Dave Plaiter accepted the trophy after a fine year which had seen his handicap fall by seven shots and in which he had been closely challenged towards the end of the year by former Champion Wichai Tananusorn, who finished as runner-up.
The excellent presentation party was splendidly hosted by Rabbi and Khun Peung back in the Elephant Bar in Soi Buakhao, presentations were made by PGS Captain David Thomas and the winners were duly toasted and bells were rung. Here’s to the next one!

Greenaway in the groove

PSC golf from The Billabong Golf Bar

Glyn, Cottee, Tubs, John and Paul Greenaway.

Monday, Jan. 13, Greenwood - Stableford
Monday saw us go up 331 to Greenwood. We were about 15 minutes late in starting and it was a very slow day out, playing from the white tees at 6500 yards it didn’t seem that long with plenty of run on the fairways, but the scores weren’t that good so maybe it did play the distance.
There were no ‘2’s so the prizes went down to fourth place. It was a big thank you to Lloyd for running the show today with the Capt out with back troubles again so thanks mate for your help. Taking fourth place today was Chris Dodd with 33 points, edged out of third by Phil Waite on count back. Coming in second was Alan Beck with 35 points and first place went to Owen Walkley with 36 points.

Brian Maddox, Willim Lasonder and Phil Waite.

Wednesday, Jan. 15, Green Valley - Stableford
Green Valley is our usual venue for Wednesdays and as per the normal we got away on time on a very hot day. We were joined today by our Russian friend Always Gobinoff, he kindly said he would go off in a five-ball as he and his friends were all travelling in carts, although they did lose a hole on the way around it wasn’t too much of a worry as we all got off the course in under four and a half hours, which for this time of the year is quite acceptable.
There was also some fun as the Russian gentleman took off for the bar but left his good mate Richard Steadman at the golf course. We have all seen a golf bag left behind but never a golfer and to make matters worse he had left his phone at the bar on departing for golf.
I suppose you have heard the saying, “I only came to play this course today as there were a few trees I didn’t hit the last time I was here”. Well my good mate George Barrie did this with every rock going down the 11th hitting every one on both sides of the fairway and still managed to bogie the hole. All in all a fun day was had by all with the banter back at the bar.
The course is in great shape and the greens as usual were very slippery making three-putting easy. The scores were very good, with Wayne Cotterell, Peter LeNoury and Glyn Davies taking sixth, fifth and fourth respectively, all on 36 points, John Player garnering third with 37, Mark McDonald second with 38 and taking line honours today was Paul Greenaway with a great 42 points.
There were three ‘2’s today coming from John Player, Bernie Stafford and Ian Heddle,
Friday, Jan. 17, Pattavia - Stableford
Pattavia, well what can you say? Since the new management took over the course has just got better and better, but the greens are just something else again, some almost unplayable they are so fast. In saying that, some of the boys played it to their advantage.
Today we welcomed Geoff Stimpson along with his mate John O’Keefe for a game and it was good to see ‘kick ass’ Kev back doing his thing, playing the last three holes in par with two shots each hole to shut down the challenge of Capt Bob and Shutts in one fowl swoop. Good one mate! But there will be another challenge on another day.
Jim Grieve came in fourth place today with 36 points, one behind Brian Maddox in third, while Phil Waite lost out on top spot to his good friend Willim Lasonder, both on 39 points each.
There was only one ‘2’ today coming from Wayne Cotterell.
Note: The Billabong Golf Bar is situated just off Siam Country Club Road looking straight down Lake Mabprachan. Give Bob a call on 082 204 3411 if you are looking for a game.

Hart hauls off the gold at Emerald

PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch

Geoff Hart (left), KPK voucher medal winner, with Reg and Peter in jovial mood.

Monday, Jan. 13, Mt. Shadow – Stableford
The biggest field for this high season of 37 golfers turned up to play this challenging course. 2 extra tee times were required at short notice but the management were very accommodating so we loaded up for yet another run along highway 7.
The course was in good condition with fast greens but a strong wind ensured it played even harder than normal. Not sure if this was entirely to blame for the final 5-ball all managing to drown their balls on hole 5, a 127 yard par 3 BIG island green!
Scores returned were low as suspected with B flight surprisingly putting in a better performance. Jack Robertson finished top of the shop with 34 points, but only on count back from John Hughes. A 3-way count back on 31 points saw Michael Brett take third place ahead of Dave Keats.
In A flight Stuart Tinkler lost out to John (speedy) Graham on a count back with 32 points, with Keith Norman and Gerry Cooney taking the minor placings.
A Flight
1st John Graham (11) 32pts
2nd Stuart Tinkler (15) 32pts
3rd Keith Norman (13) 31pts
4th Gerry Cooney (13) 30pts
B Flight
1st Jack Robertson (27) 34pts
2nd John Hughes (17) 34pts
3rd Michael Brett (19) 31pts
4th Dave Keats (34) 31pts
Near Pins: Keichi Kasami, John Hughes, Barry Murnin and Tim Winder.
Wednesday, Jan. 15, Royal Lakeside – Stableford
A smaller group of twenty-six golfers out today, with a number of our regular players heading off for a two-game trip to Soi Dao. The journey down the Chonburi bypass was smooth and we arrived at the course just under an hour after leaving The Ranch to find the weather conditions bright and breezy.
The first group tee’d off from the blue tees without delay and although the course was fairly busy, the round was completed in good time. None of our members have played better than their handicap in our previous five visits here, but despite the strong breeze, today was the day that we would end that hoodoo.
Gerry Cooney was the star performer, recording a great score of 38 points to win the A Flight two points clear of Keith Norman. The cut was set at 17.1 which put John Hughes (hcp.17.0) into the A Flight for the first time in recent months, taking third place in the process.
Gordon Melia (hcp. 17.1) played to his handicap to win the B Flight ahead of Mike Corner and Jack Robertson.
Everyone recognises that the par threes here are tricky, so it was a surprise that three players from the B Flight claimed near pin prizes with Tony Berry being the only winner from the A Flight.
A Flight
1st Gerry Cooney (13) 38pts
2nd Keith Norman (12) 36pts
3rd John Hughes (17) 34pts
B Flight
1st Gordon Melia (17.1) 36pts

The Emerald – Medal
We were still missing our scouting party to Soi Dao so just the 27 golfers headed south for a change to tackle the not long but not easy Emerald course. On arrival we found the first tee teeming with life and despair set in when we found out a slow tournament had set off at 8.00am, followed by the aforementioned society.
Surprisingly our first group teed off only 10mins late but that was as good as it got as the first 5 holes were agonisingly slow, culminating in 5 groups congregating on the first par three. Speed of play increased after the bottleneck but at least one of our group retreated to Ban Chang for sustenance after the ninth, 3 hours later.
The less than ideal condition of the fairways combined with lightning fast greens didn’t help the general wellbeing. Many golfers several putted greens but the best performance belonged to John Hughes, who, on a particularly nasty pin position, managed to 6-putt and get no nearer the hole!
Despite all the obstacles Geoff Hart managed an extremely creditable net 67, followed in B flight by Reg (silver surfer) Smart on 74 and Neil (get that lizard off me) Griffin on 76.
Nobody managed to break par in A flight with Tony Robbins coming the closest on net 75 aided by a couple of chips in off the fairway. Peter Kelly bettered Jan Ulriksen’s back nine to take second on count back, both carding net 76.
A Flight
1st Tony Robbins (13) net 75
2nd Peter Kelly (11) net 76
3rd Jan Ulriksen (16) net 76
B Flight
1st Geoff Hart (26) net 67
2nd Reg Smart (27) net 74
3rd Neil Griffin (23) net 76
Near Pins: Tony Robbins, Tony Scrambler, Per Brandsrod and Daryl Whyte.

Cowboy country for Mulberry Ryder Cup

PSC golf from The Golf Club

Team England with the Rest of the World side on the final day in full team kit.

Steve Ellison
Khao Yai was the destination for the 2014 edition of the Mulberry Ryder Cup and 16 golfers from around the world came on board to take on 16 of England’s finest. Playing at Rancho Charnvee, Panorama, Khao Yai Golf Course and Lotus Valley, it made for a very memorable 4-day competition. These road trips are always great fun and like they say, what happens on the road stays on Facebook.
Notables for this 11th annual event were Mark Stanley and Nick Handscombe with 3½ wins each and Russell Exley, who had the biggest winning margin with 10 and 8. The final score was England 24 v R.O.W. 16.
Big thanks to England Captain Jeff Calrow and a gracious losing effort by R.O.W. Captain Nigel Flanagan and of course our pal Mr. Steve Mulberry. Cynics may say that this is just an excuse for a drinking get-a-way, and those cynics may just be right.

England Captain Jeff Calrow with ROW skipper Nigel Flanagan and host Steve Mulberry.

Also, we will return to Khao Yai for our annual Songkran pilgrimage on 15th -20th of April so see Steve for further details on how to escape the madness in the cool mountain air!
Monday, Jan. 13, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford
1st Phil Williams (12) 37pts
2nd Henry O’Brien (22) 36pts
3rd Bob Finley (16) 33pts
3rd Walter Baechli (16) 33pts
Just a bit of chaos at the start, but the Green Valley experience is still a great one. Near perfect conditions greeted us this morning as both the golf course and the weather were glorious. Only one golfer bettered their handicap today and Phil Williams got round with 37 Stableford points to take the top spot.
That legendary Scotsman Henry O’Brien ended just a shot back on 36 while Cap’t Bob Finley figured all square with the colourful Walter Baechli, both on 33 points to finish off the leaderboard.
Wednesday, Jan. 15, Plutaluang E & S (white tees) – Stableford
1st Phil Smedley (12) 36pts
2nd Phil Lee (12) 32pts
3rd Sean Hastings (18) 31pts

Ray Powell, Jayson Schembri and Phil Lee, Friday’s top survivors.

It has been ages since we played Navy so it was good to get back there at long last. The course was in good shape and a high season green fee rate of 700 baht put a smile on everyone’s faces. If the weather was this good all year round I reckon we would have a population of a million in no time. You hardly build up a sweat these days and the nights are the coolest in my 15 years here.
Today must have been the Captain’s Day as our one and only Phil Smedley dominated the competition and was 4 shots ahead of 2nd place. Well done Smedders!
Friday, Jan. 17, Silky Oaks (yellow tees) - Stableford
1st Phil Lee (12) 30pts
2nd Ray Powell (16) 29pts
3rd Jayson Schembri (19) 28pts
In retrospect, maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to play off the yellow tees. I mean, 6,500 yards doesn’t sound too bad looking at the scorecard, but those 200+ yard carries over water and the wind factor made some of the boys pull out what little hair they have left.

Spectacular par 3 at Khao Yai Golf Club.

We had a former Navy Admiral state he didn’t see that much water in all his years at sea. As it was, we had to admit several golfers for psychiatric counseling, such a terrifying experience it was. The lakeball concession got a big boost, so there was some good news to report. It turned out to be an expensive round with dozens and dozens of balls gone and why they can’t make those balls float is beyond me. It was definitely a reality check!
As you can see, Phil Lee was the best score at 30 Stableford points. That was as good as we could muster. It was a tough old slog out there and we are all just happy to survive and it is all over. We promise to stay to the whites from now on!
Thanks for joining TGC again for another week of golf in paradise. Stay classy, Pattaya!
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We try to schedule summer “Sports Days”, so come join us for a seriously fun day out. Tricky greens provide a tough test

PSC golf from Siam Country Resort

Neil Harvey.

Tuesday, Jan. 14,
Pattavia Century - Stableford

Tuesday was a visit to Pattavia, and with clear skies and a light breeze blowing the conditions were ideal for golf. The course was co-operating also, as the renovations come to the fore, just so long as you didn’t stray too far from the fairway. Many of the tees were well forward, however some tricky pin positions compensated for the lack of length on some of the holes.
Jeff Wylie (7) had a good day with the putter, to score 41 points, ahead of Willem Lasonder (21) who signed for 35 points in second, with Gerd Riedler (9) getting the final podium spot a further point behind.
Near pins were spread around between Willem, Bob, Jeff & Jonathan, with an apology to Steve.
Thursday, Jan. 16,Pattana - Stableford
Thursday saw us turn off Hwy 331 a little earlier, on our way to Pattana, with the B & C loops our allotted test. The course was in good condition throughout, however while Tuesday’s pin placements were tricky, this day’s were downright treacherous, with the wind blowing a little harder, the greens a bit quicker, and the gradients a little steeper.
Gerd Riedler (9) played solid golf to lead the field home with 33 points, ahead of 3 players all on 30. Neil Harvey (17) got second spot ahead of Willem Lasonder (21) & Jeff (7) after the count back went 15, 14 & 13 respectively on the back 9. Neil hit a pearler into the last hole with his new hybrid, for a nice par and 3 points.
Near pins went to Steve, Jim & Bob.
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off Siam Country Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn right after 50 metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres along. Golf from here is generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with the Resort hosting prompt presentations on both days. As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies & seniors who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Newell as good as gold

PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society

Medal winners - Peter LeNoury (left) with Bob Newell

Sunday, Jan. 12, Green Valley - Gold & Monthly Medal Gold Medal
1st Bob Newell
A Flight
1st Peter LeNoury (11) net 71
2nd Steve Gibson (11) net 71
3rd JP Maffray (11) net 72
B Flight
1st Pierre Bietry (17) net 72
2nd Pat Regan (14) net 72
3rd Laurie McBride (14) net 73
C Flight
1st Don Lehmer (19) net 75
2nd Nick Shaw (19) net 75
3rd Eddy Beilby (18) net 76
Near Pins: No 4 JP Maffray, No 9 Paul Heyworth, No 12 Paul Bray, No 16 Tom Byrne.
The championship of twelve months of medal competition was on the table this Sunday as the members of the golf society, who had all won first place in each of the twelve months medal competition of 2013, vied for what is certainly one of the top two awards of the society’s golf calendar.
And the winner was Bob ‘the Dark side Destroyer’ Newell whose dedication of his measly six handicap is obvious, and of course his coronation attests’ to his ability considering this represented back to back Gold Medal wins for him. Irishman Tom Byrne gave Bob a good run but unfortunately flagged a little on the back nine.
The common folk contested the January 2014 intense monthly medal and it took a net 71 to win, albeit with the help of a count back. Peter ‘the right honorable’ LeNoury used that mathematical wedge to make his 71 better than Steve Gibson’s, that duet being followed in the premier flight by JP Maffray a stroke adrift.
In B Flight, Pierre Bietry did likewise to Ireland’s Pat Reagan as both returned a net 72. Fellow Irishman Laurie McBride and ‘the Wireless’ locked horns a shot back and as the luck of Irish prevailed, Brian was left speechless.
In C Flight it was Don ‘the ladies man’ Lehmer who edged Nick Shaw on count back at net 75 apiece for the top spot. Four players fought it out for the bronze place, Martin Allard, Sterling Pearson, Paul Heyward and Eddy ‘the eagle’ Beilby, with the Eagle’s inner nine proving the best.
Paul Heyward, Terry Mangan and Steve Gibson shared the 2’s pot.
Monday, Jan. 13, Khao Kheow B & C - Stableford
A Flight
1st Ian Pickles (16) 38pts
2nd Paraic McManus (5) 34pts
3rd Eric Gobert (5) 33pts
B Flight
1st Bruce Berlin (24) 35pts
2nd Mick Coughlan (22) 33pts
3rd Phil Scotton (27) 33pts
Only one player broke par on the day but did it in fine fashion as Ian Pickles with 38 points took the A Flight top spot and man of the match honours. Ian was four clear of Paraic McManus. Eric Gobert edged the Co. Wicklow man Billy Briton on count back to round out the flight honours. Billy did have some comfort in the shape of one of the days 2’s
Bruce Berlin led B Flight with a steady 35 points as Mick Coughlan matched Phil Scotton’s 33 points and prevailed on count back, leaving Phil with the bronze.
Andy Kellaher split the 2’s pot with Billy.
Tuesday, Jan. 14, Burapha A & B - Stableford
A Flight
1st Les Cobban (8) 37pts
2nd Bob Watson (2) 36pts
3rd Eric Gobert (5) 35pts
B Flight
1st Joe Malone (16) 41pts
2nd Colin Davis (16) 39pts
3rd Nick Odnoral (16) 39pts
C Flight
1st Phil Scotton (22) 37pts
2nd Jim Elphick (21) 36pts
3rd Mick Coughlan (22) 35pts
With the society back to about full strength a good sized field took on the A & B layouts at Burapha. Joe Malone was man of the match on the day with a splendid 41 points to also top B Flight. The Donkey showed why he put the well contained Burapha on the playlist as he put a count back win over Aussie star Nick Odnoral.
In C Flight, Phil Scotton bettered Monday’s third place finish with a creditable 37 points to stand atop the podium. Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick and Mick Coughlan were strung out in single digit increments, Mick‘s second visit to the pay desk on the bounce.
In the premier flight, Les Cobban edged Aussie ace Bob Watson by a painful single point to take top step on the podium. Eric Gobert tidied up the flight, but one more point adrift.
2’s specialist, Andy Kellaher along with Thierry Petrement, Paul Smith and Maurice Boboiti shared the 2’s pot.
Wednesday, Jan. 15, Silky Oak – Stableford
A Flight
1st JJ Harney (36) 36pts
2nd Freddy Starbeck (14) 35pts
3rd Paraic McManus (5) 35pts
B Flight
St Mike Jeffrey’s (17) 38pts
2nd Ajit Amin (18) 37pts
3rd Per Brandsroed (20) 36pts
C Flight
1st Phil Scotton (27) 43pts
2nd Bruce Walters (32) 33pts
3rd Christian Boysen (22) 32pts
Silky Oak is always a popular venue and Wednesday’s entry proved the case once more as so many golfers turned up to play we had three divisions. Phil Scotton continued his rich vein of form as his C Flight winning and man of the match score was a tremendous ten points clear of Aussie star Bruce Walters. A count back joust was staged for third place as Christian Boysen bettered Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick on the back nine.
Mike ‘the Welsh wizard’ Jeffrey’s showed his usual stedy form as his 38 points took the top rung in B Flight. Mike was trailed in one stroke increments by Ajit Amin and Per Brandsroed in that order.
The big boys’ flight was led by Co. Waterford man JJ Harney with a steady even par round. A trio of players followed JJ into the barn - Freddy Starbeck, Paraic McManus and Aussie ace Paul Bray. Freddy received the silver, Paraic the bronze and Paul a round of applause.
Paraic McManus was the sole heir to a very healthy 2’s pot.
Thursday, Jan. 16, Crystal Bay B & C - Stableford
A Flight
1st John Carlton (15) 39pts
2nd Max Scott (5) 38pts
3rd Maurice Rodoati (15) 36pts
B Flight
1st Thierry Danzas (26) 38pts
2nd Aiden Murray (24) 37pts
3rd Mick Coghlan (22) 36pts
Crystal Bay can rightly boast that it is in the forefront of the local courses in respect of the quality of the course and the value for money and attracts a good number of golfers to its 27 holes.
B & C nines were the task at hand for the lads today and John Carlton led home A Flight with a best on the day 39 points, one stroke clear of Aussie Max Scott. Maurice Rodoati rounded out the flight after gaining a count back victory over nice guy Thierry Petrement.
The other Thierry, Mr. Danzas, was the top player in B Flight with 38 points followed by Aiden Murray a shot back, with Mick Coughlan picking up the bronze a further shot in arrears.
Max Scott, Thierry Danzas, Bruce Berlin and Akioshi Yamamotto shared the 2’s pot.
Friday, Jan. 17, Pattavia Century - Stableford
A Flight
1st Tom McManus (13) 39pts
2nd Ed Wyckoff (11) 38pts
3rd Paul Heyworth (8) 36pts
B Flight
1st Eric Black (16) 40pts
2nd Terry Mangan (14) 37pts
3rd Peter Henshaw (16) 36pts
C Flight
1st Amin Ajit (18) 39pts
2nd Jum Karagit (19) 37pts
3rd Bruce Berlin (24) 36pts
Pattavia Century is now one of the favourite courses of all golfers here and a visit to it is always an occasion for golfers to join us for a day out. On the course the heat was very noticeable and the course was still fairly dry, but the greens were as formidable as ever and it seemed difficult for most to put a score together. That being said, the podium flight scores were excellent.
B Flight provided the man of the match as Eric Black returned an excellent 40 points, mind you he needed every one of them as A Flight and B Flight winners were just a shot off the pace. A couple of ‘Mick’s’ followed Eric up the podium steps Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan and Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw in that order.
In C Flight, Amin Ajit returned a score of 39 points to top the division. Amin was two clear of the belle of the bar Jum Karagit and a further shot clear of Bruce Berlin.
Tom McManus was the top man in the senior flight with his 39 points, closely followed by Ed ‘our man in the White House’ Wyckoff. Paul Heyworth rounded out the flight with a solid even par round.
Paul also slotted home a ‘2’, along with Dermot Flanagan, Peter Hynard, Paul Bray and Ajit Amin.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd Soi13/13 near Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

JJ wins the day

The Backyard Golf Society

JJ (2nd left) celebrates his win with the staff at Blue Sky Bar.

The weekly Backyard Golf Society game at Emerald on Jan. 17 was played in ideal golfing conditions; the brisk wind keeping the temperature down although it did prove to be tricky to judge on some holes.
Based on reports from the Beaver Bar group, who teed off ahead of us, the starter sent a group of very late players from the land of Samsung off on the 10th so that was good to see.
The winner of the stableford competition today was Jimmy ‘2 Stone, his 35 points in the windy conditions being a great score so the balls must have been dropping in from all angles.
The near-pin prize went to one of the returning French Canadians (in fact we had 50% of our entire Francophile contingent out today with Don the Divorcer also playing), Randy the Cage Fighter.
The skins were really well spread with 4 to Dan the Diet Whiskey Man, 3 to Randy the Cage Fighter, 2 each to Jimmy 2 Stone and Secondhand Bob (whose cute caddy was apparently attired in QPR stripes today??) and singles to Michelle Chatt (who also won the 4 roll-overs from last week), Kit the Pom, Irish John and Joe 90 (aka Golden Trowel’s Boyfriend) and 1 to the roll-over kitty next week.
Passport Control was interviewing for a possible vacancy in the house at View Talay Villas and missed the golf but he did make it down the road for a drink with the lads. Blue Sky bar was all abuzz when one of Apple’s favourite fellas walked in and brought out a rarely seen smile on the boss’s face.
On a separate issue, congrats to Rod on reaching the grand old age of 70, thus enabling him to play off the silver tees from now on. A great night was had by all at the Wolfhound Bar for the big bash last week.

Barney blitzes Pattavia

IPGC golf from The Tara Court Golf Group

Sunday, Jan. 12, Green Valley (white tees) - Stableford
Our usual visit to Green Valley on Sunday and with not as many Koreans as normal this year it was possible to get around in a reasonable time of approx. four and a half hours, which is not too bad for high season.

Donal Lyne.

A large group out so we decided to have two flights again. After struggling a bit this year since he came out to Thailand, Donal Lyne topped the A flight with the best score of the day of 37 points. Jack Behan came in second with 34 after beating his friend Teddy Lodge into third place on a count back.
Teddy’s younger brother Ger topped the B flight with 34 points and he has managed to get among the prizes nearly every day he has played with us, and at the same time get a shot back on his handicap. Well done Ger!
Alec Hoare, who is also having a good spell at the golf, came second, also on 34 pts, being beaten on a count back by Ger, and Michael Williams came in third with 33.
Joe McArdle and John Fetherston shared the 2’s with one each.
A Flight
1st Donal Lyne (17) 37pts
2nd Jack Behan (15) 34pts
3rd Teddy Lodge (9) 34pts
B Flight
1st Ger Lodge (19) 34pts
2nd Alec Hoare (18) 34pts
3rd Michael Williams (19) 33pts
Tuesday, Jan. 14, Khao Kheow (yellow tees) - Stableford
Tuesday saw our first visit to Khao Kheow in a long time where we played the A and B courses. The course was in very good condition with fast greens and as usual a pleasure to play.

Evelyn McNamara.

Because of the difficulty of the course only one person managed to beat their handicap, Evelyn McNamara had an excellent 38 points for the best score of the day and a win in B flight by three points. Pat Culloty was second with 33 and once again Ger Lodge featured with 32 points.
In A flight Walter Panichi had an excellent 36 points, which off his 2 handicap was a great score. John Nicholas had four blanks but still managed to get 34 for second place and Frank McGowan came third with the same score but being beaten on a count back.
Joe Peters scooped the ‘2’s pot with the only one of the day and a big pay out.
A Flight
1st Walter Panichi (2) 36pts
2nd John Nicholas (8) 34pts
3rd Frank McGowan (15) 34pts
B Flight
1st Evelyn McNamara (22) 38pts
2nd Pat Culloty (20) 33pts
3rd Ger Lodge (19) 32pts
Thursday, Jan. 16, Pattavia Century - Stableford
This course is probably the best value in the area at the moment. In excellent condition and at over 6,500-yds and with lightning fast greens it is a good challenge of golf.
Despite the length of the course and the fast greens, Barney Sheedy managed to make it look easy with 40 points off his 10 handicap. Barney also got the only ‘2’ of the day to make it a very good payday for him. Three of our friends from Australia took up the next three places in A Flight, Tony Pike in second with 38, John Nicholas in third with 36 and Walter Panichi in fourth with 34, beating Ted Morris on a count back.
In B Flight the scores weren’t quite so good with the fast greens catching out most of the higher handicappers. John McKenna was the winner here with 31 points and Jack Behan was beaten into second on the count back with the same score. Sean Hallahan was third with 30 and Joe Peters came fourth with 29.
A Flight
1st Barney Sheedy (10) 40pts
2nd Tony Pike (9) 38pts
3rd John Nicholas (8) 36pts
4th Walter Panichi (2) 34pts
B Flight
1st John McKenna (17) 31pts
2nd Jack Behan (15) 31pts
3rd Sean Hallahan (20) 30pts
4th Joe Peters (23) 29pts

Gerd, Ebrahim & Buckers triumph at the Valley

PSC golf from The Growling Swan

Peter Blackburn
Monday, Jan. 13, Pleasant Valley – Stableford
There were 29 of us signed up and ready to play Pleasant Valley and most of us gathered at The Growling Swan to prepare for our departure. The weather was glorious although quite windy and the golf course was fairly busy as we got our first group away 12 minutes later than our scheduled 9.33 am tee time.
The course was in good condition although the greens were quite slow and took some getting used to and with the traffic ahead maintaining a good pace we proceeded quite well and completed our round in four hours & twenty five minutes. It had been a very enjoyable round with excellent company on a very picturesque layout.

Craig Wearne & John Davis.

The winner in Division A was once again Gerd Riedler (17 point back nine) with 38 points on a count back from Kevin “Wayco” Waycott (15 point back nine) and the consistent Mark “Westy” West was third with 37 points.
Ebrahim was victorious in Division B with a fine 37 points, 3 points ahead of Eric “Judge” Black in second spot and Jayson Schembri finished third on 32 points.
In Division C it was Graham “Grunter” Buckingham who was the winner with 36 points and with 2 golfers on 32 points Nolan “No-one” Wise (20 point back nine & 17 points on the last 6 holes) won the count back and finished second from Patrick Poussier (20 point back nine & 13 points on the last 6 holes) who finished third.

Thursday, Jan. 16, Eastern Star – 4-Ball BB Stableford
It was the day for our “novelty” event of the month and the competition was a 4-Ball Better-Ball Stableford event with a “random draw” pairing a low handicap with a high one. The halfway mark was handicap 25 and the draw was done under intense scrutinisation the afternoon before at the bar. There were the usual moans & groans when some people found out who they were partnered with but basically all went along with the spirit of things and were determined to have a good day.
We departed the GS right on time at 8.30 am and headed South down Sukhumvit and after a very good run arrived at the course just 40 minutes later. It was fairly busy but after 15 minutes or so of practice putting we were able to send our first of eight four balls away 10 minutes ahead of schedule at 9.50 am. We had a fairly slow Thai group in front of us and had to wait a fair bit but proceeded at a steady pace and completed the front nine in two hours & fifteen minutes.
The weather was fantastic, not too hot with a gentle breeze and the golf course was in great shape with the greens being in the best condition I have seen them in for quite some time. The back nine was a little slower than the front nine and we managed to complete our full round in four hours & thirty five minutes.
We and all the others enjoyed this format and gave many of us the chance to play with golfers we had not played with before. Our group had a very enjoyable time and played reasonably well whilst enjoying each other’s company very much.
As it was a four-ball better ball format on the day there was of course just the one division with six placegetters. There were also rewards for nearest the pin on the four par 3’s and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens plus longest drive awards on the 18th hole for A Division and B Division..
The winners on the day were John Davis and Craig Wearne with a massive 50 points and in second place came Aaron Shorten and Stephen Newton with 46 points. In third place were Ken Hole and Ian “Bat” Masterson with 44 points and taking fourth was your writer, Peter “Blacky” Blackburn & Russell Calcutt on 41 points with fifth place going to Duangjai “Kae” Tusagad and Peter “Pizza” Grey with 39 points.
With 2 teams on 38 points a count back was required which saw Eric “Judge” Black and Tristan Freeman (19 point back nine, 13 points on the last 6 holes & 9 points on the last 3 holes) finish in sixth spot with Mark “Westy” West and Vince Romeo (19 point back nine, 13 points on the last 6 holes & 7 points on the last 3 holes) just missing out.
1st John Davis (17) & Craig Wearne (36) 50pts
2nd Aaron Shorten (24) & Stephen Newton (28) 46pts
3rd Ken Hole (17) & Ian Masterson (36) 44pts
4th Peter Blackburn (14) & Russell Calcutt (36) 41pts
5th Duangjai Tusagad (20) & Peter Grey (36) 39pts
6th Eric Black (16) & Tristan Freeman (36) 38pts
Near Pins: 3rd – Duangjai Tusagad, 6th - Alain Taddei, 13th – Stu Rifkin, 17th – Peter Blackburn
Long Putts: 9th – Gary Williams, 18th – Rita Zoebelli
Long Drives: A Division – Stu Rifkin, B Division – Craig Wearne
As it was a team event there was no individual NAGA cap award but a donation to Deefa was required from the pair with the least attractive score and they were Tom McMahon and Gary Williams. We are now all looking forward to the 2-man Texas scramble with a random draw on Thursday, February 13th at Pleasant Valley.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low & high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at 8.30 am. 2nd Jack Macnamara (17) 28pts
3rd Joan Keegan (19) 27pts

At Travellers Rest there is never a dull moment and on Monday something quite remarkable happened. On a beautiful morning over 30 golfers headed off to play Mountain Shadow, which is never easy but is usually OK if you keep the ball on the fairway. Looking at the scores at the end of the day only two golfers in the two divisions managed to better their handicaps, nothing unusual there I hear you say, but when I tell you the rest never even reached 30 points I would argue that that is unheard of. It was as though there was a force field around every golf hole and players were three or four-putting from ridiculously short distances. I should know, I did it myself!
The two golfers who deserve a mention were ‘Mr. Consistent’ Mike Rushant and the very steady Kevin Smith, well done guys.
Tuesday, Jan. 14, Green Valley - Stablrford
Div.1 (0-15)
1st Rocky Jones (5) 39pts
2nd Nick Thomas (14) 36pts
3rd Gary Blackbourne (8) 36pts
Div.2 (16+)
1st Peter Poppleton (25) 42pts
2nd Ken Brehm (19) 35pts
3rd Doug Martin (16) 30pts

Peter Poppleton.

On Tuesday it was back to our usual venue at Green Valley. In Division 2 Peter Poppleton, who endured the day from hell at Mountain Shadow, somehow regained his composure and rattled up 42 pts. He is a prodigious hitter off the tee but like most high handicappers is inconsistent when it comes to the short game, so I should hazard a guess that it all came together at Green Valley.
In Division 1 Rocky Jones showed that his win last week at the same venue was no fluke when he did it again this week by shooting 39 pts.
Thursday, Jan. 16, Bangpakong – Stableford
Div.1 (0-14)
1st Barry Wood (12) 36pts
2nd Alan Thomas (5) 36pts
3rd Paddy Murphy (14) 35pts
Div.2 (15+)
1st Peter Poppleton (23) 41pts
2nd Derek Thorogood (17) 40pts
3rd Jim McNeill (15) 36pts
Thursday and it was a welcome return to breezy Bangpakong. Another large field arrived to find they were permitted to use the me mbers’ locker room whilst the public one is being renovated. Wow it was fit for a king and it was enlightening to see how the other half live.
Barry Wood and Peter Poppleton (again) then proceeded to play like kings and both finished first in their respective divisions.
Saturday, Jan. 18, Crystal Bay - Stableford
1st Billy Ostle (12) 38pts
2nd Barry Wood (12) 37pts
3rd Tim Dalton (19) 37pts
On Saturday it was back to Crystal Bay (C and A courses) and it obviously suited the top three who all bettered their handicaps. Billy Ostle came out on top but only just as only two points covered these leading three.
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like to play a round of golf with the TRGG, please phone Fergus Brennan on 086 056 7019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name to the weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.

One over - the best of a tough week

IPGC golf from The Haven

Monday, Jan. 13, The Emerald - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Dick Heaney (15) 35pts
2nd John Carlin (15) 34pts
3rd Brian Randall (36) 33pts
4th Terry Hodgkiss (23) 32pts
5th Patrick Scullion (21) 32pts

Allen Raaen.

A very good, enjoyable, but difficult week of golf started out at the Emerald where the course was found to be in very good shape, although the greens proved to be the hardest part of the game as the pin placements had been positioned in all the most hard to get at spots.
Dick Heaney, who had been out the previous afternoon, evening, and most of the night celebrating Russell Gilroy’s departure to Australia, almost unbelievably rose in the morning very late but just in time to catch the bus and to win the day with a round that was a study in application under extreme stress.
John Carlin, one of the smarter survivors of the previous day’s activities, also stayed the course well to finish in second place just one behind.

Dick Heaney.

Brian Randall took third place with a solid round to end his golfing sojourn in Pattaya ahead of a count back for fourth, which Terry Hodgkiss won over Patrick Scullion with a better 12 to 10 over the last six after they had tied the nine at 19 apiece.
There were no 2’s in the second division but John Carlin celebrated again with the only one in the first.
Prior to the presentations there were welcomes for Michael Devetta and Mathew Badman together with a welcome back for Jens Gunnarsson. There was also a farewell for Brian Randall returning to Blighty to put his feet up for a while.
Wednesday, Jan. 15, Treasure Hill - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Allen Raaen (8) 32pts
2nd Jens Gunnarsson (14) 30pts
3rd Philip Cass (20) 30pts
4th Patrick Scullion (21) 28pts
5th Shuichi Kodaka (18) 28pts
6th Danny Greer (24) 28pts

Paul Young.

If the hopefuls had thought that things might be a bit easier at Treasure Hill playing from the yellow tees, they were quickly brought back to reality as the day proved to be even tougher than the Monday test. Only the good play by some of the Jomtiem group, who had teed off earlier in the day, saved the round from being non-counting as the best that The Haven’s group could muster was a four over handicap return by the winner Allen Raaen. Allen was also the only player on the day to get round without a blob on his card but too many singletons meant a less than sparkling final total, although it was good enough by two for the win.
Jens Gunnarsson meanwhile won a count back over Philip Cass with a better 17 to 15 to take second. Patrick Scullion also won a count back for fourth place, a three-way affair with Shuichi Kodaka and Danny Greer, scoring 15 against 14 and 13 to leave Shuichi in fifth and Danny in sixth.
With the course playing so hard it was unsurprising that there were no 2’s in the first division but it was also almost unbelievable that that there were two in the second division, with Mike Hill and Danny Greer getting one each, although Mike at least had the grace to chip his in from 30 yards.
Back at The Haven there was a farewell for Adrian Cook after his month in the sun with dry feet, who was returning to England for something completely different.
Friday, Jan. 17, Mountain Shadow (blue tees) - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Paul Young (14) 34pts
2nd Shuichi Kodaka (18) 34pts
3rd Allen Raaen (8) 31pts
4th Mark Armstrong (25) 27pts
5th Mike Hill (21) 25pts
With two hard days behind them most of the players were hoping for some respite, but were sadly disillusioned at the end of their day as they almost all trooped into the clubhouse bedraggled and, it must be said, a little dispirited with all but the two leaders far from par.
There was absolutely nothing wrong with the course which was in tip top condition, with the rough well maintained and the fairways a pleasure to play off. The difficulty of the day was caused by the greens that were playing as the pros would love to have them, very fast with not a hint of a bounce and absolutely true. But the positioning of the holes on undulating surfaces proved to be just too stern a test for the majority of the players as the course lived up to its reputation as having been designed for low handicappers, even though the length is one of the shortest on the circuit.
Paul Young had to win a count back over Shuichi Kodaka to take his first win out of Soi 13, which he did with a better 20 to 14 after Shuichi had started as if he would be setting the course alight, but sadly faded badly, garnering just four points from the last four holes. Paul steamed in taking nine from the same four including a magnificent birdie on the last.
Next best, if it could be termed that, was Allen Raaen’s five over handicap card to take third spot but at least that was four better than the next on the podium, Mark Armstrong, with Mike Hill in fifth another two back. But they were all far and away ahead of the rest of the field as the greens took a terrible toll.
On this occasion there were no heroics on the par threes and a dearth of threes, so the scoreboard remained much as England’s, empty, but we had more fours recorded.
Before the presentations were made there were welcome backs for Graham and Steven Graham, the advance guard for the ex-Shadows member Brian Lewis, who is still in England preparing for his one night stand tour at The Haven featuring his nylon strung fold up Yamaha guitar. There was also a welcome back for Paul Young.
Later after the day’s cricket match (which England forced the Australians to win) had ended, the Doc was heard whimpering behind a closed door in the gents but it was unclear whether the reason was the cricket, or his woeful second attempt at returning to play golf.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile 094 567 5726 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Crystal Bay was the game today and after a smooth check-in we were off A1. The course was in fine condition with the greens a bit bumpy, and it was also busy but we managed to make it around in 4 hours and 40 minutes.

Long Putts: Kurt Sandgaard, Elias Magnusson
We were off to Plutaluang today to play the East and South courses and we got off East 1 on time under sunny skies with a light breeze that stiffened as the round wore on. The course was in fine condition with some slippery greens to be had on both nines.
It was quite busy so it took us 2 hours and 40 minutes to make the turn, which was not easy as the path behind south 1 was chock with carts, golfers on foot and even a lady wheeling a baby carriage. The end came 5 hours and 15 minutes after we started and felt more like 6.
Mashi Kaneta won the A Flight with 36 points ahead of Niels Hansen in second on a count back from Jesper Rasmussen third. Leif kirkgaard completed the podium in fourth.
Carole Kubicki topped the B Flight on a count back from Jack Robertson in second, both on 36 points each. Elias magnusson third and Peter Hammond fourth filled the minor places.

A test too far at Treasure Hill

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

John Maycock & Derek Brook with one of Bert’s finest.

Derek Brook
Tuesday, Jan. 14, Mountain Shadow – Stableford
This Course is normally a hard test and as we went to the first the wind was behind, so why not play off the blues? Well we did, and the number of times as we played when I wished we had played off the whites instead was legion. The wind was howling and behind or in front it was a problem, with the ball going wildly where it was not supposed to go.
However the wind was not the major problem. The major problem was that once the ball was on the green you had to keep it there. Get the ball above the pin and try to stop it on the green with the wind behind could be next to impossible. To make it even worse the greens were lightning fast. This was a tough day on a tough course.
After 10 holes I had 12 points and the player I was scoring for had 7. That may give you some idea how tough it was, mind, the question was how good, or bad, were the rest of the players doing and surely they were not as bad as us. After the round, when at least we saved some credence on the last 8 holes, it was time for a beer to recover.

John Carlton.

Back at Bert’s it was soon time for the results. The thing I had found as the scores came in was that everyone had had a bad day. In fact it is a long time since the scores have been this bad as we usually get someone who beats their handicap. On this day no one had, or got even close to it; the question was, had my 20 points in the last 8 holes managed to get me in the frame?
In the A Flight, 0 to 18, we had the best score of the day when John Maycock won with just 33 points. In second was Keichi Kasami with 32 points ahead of Doug Maiko in third with 31 on a count back over Mashi Kaneta in fourth.
Now to the B Flight, ‘the thoughtful golfers’, where we had a four-way count back on 32 points fighting it out for the top places, amazing. So the winner with 21 points on the back nine was your scribe, Derek Brook, ahead of Rita Zoebeli in second with 20 points on the back nine, Mike O’Brien in third with 17 and Max Bracegirdle in fourth with 14.
Those missed putts were costly for some and this tells the tale of never giving up and believe me, miracles do happen!
Near Pins: Richard Kubicky, Buckers, Bischof, Mashi
Long Putts: Mashi, Paul Alford
Friday, Jan. 17, Treasure Hill – Stableford
This is a course with a quick booking-in procedure so we were soon at the start and the first thing we noticed was that the wind was quite light and stayed that way all through the round, so for once we were not wind-blown. This was quite surprising as normally we get a high wind here at all times. This surely was going to be a good day. Even the temperature was fine.

Max Bracegirdle.

The course was in great condition and there has been a great amount of improvement here and they are always working on it, although to be fair, some of the improvements are put here to make the course tighter and hence more difficult to play. For example, trees have been planted in awkward places. For the general knock about golfer they make the course overly difficult and this layout has always been tough enough. Mind, that said, this is always a course worth a visit if you are a masochist.
Back at Bert’s it was time to declare the results and with great weather and a course in fine condition it was still as I expected, golf course 28, golfers nil. Over the week the results was courses 56, golfers nil. What a tough week!
In the A Flight the winner was John Carlton with 33 points, ahead of Brian Gabe in second with 31, while in third was Dick Warberg with 30 ahead of a count back on 29 points that saw Mark West in fourth and Vero Morgan just missing out.
In the B Flight the winner was Max Bracegirdle with 35 points, while Nigel Perry took second on 34 and in third was Jack Robertson with 33 with fourth place going to Graham Buckingham on 32 points. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Vero Morgan, Andre Van Dyk, Mashi Kaneta, Landis Brooks
Long Putts: John Carlton, Graham Buckingham

Svetlana Kuznetsova joins PTT Pattaya Open

Two-time Grand Slam champion, Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, who is currently ranked no 20 in the world, has made a late entry into the US$250,000 PTT Pattaya Open, which is being held at the Dusit Thani Hotel, Pattaya from 26 January – 2 February.

Former world No.2 Svetlana Kuznetsova will be making her first appearance at the Pattaya tournament.

The 28 year old Russia rose as high as No 2 in the world on the back of Grand Slam titles at the US Open and Roland Garros and after an injury plagued season in 2012 she returned to form in 2013 with a semi-final appearance in Moscow and quarter-finals at the Australian Open and Roland Garros.
Svetlana Kuznetsova is joined in the main draw by a quartet of young guns who are eager to upset their peers. Heading the group is Thailand’s Luksika KumKhum. The 20 year old who has risen to no 88 in the world ranking caused a sensation at the Australian Open knocking out sixth seed Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic before going down to Germany’s Mona Barthel in a closely fought three set encounter.
Another 20 year old making waves heading for Pattaya is Spain’s Garbine Muguraza she has climbed to No 38 in the world after winning the title in Hobart where she had to come through from the qualifying rounds. She has continued her hot streak at the Australian Open where at press time she has reached the 4th round, her latest victim being World No 10 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark.
A third 20 year old making her first appearance in Pattaya is Ajla Tomljanovic of Croatia who broke into the top 100 last year and has been impressive so far this year.
Completing the quartet is teenage star 17 year old Donna Vekic of Croatia who is the youngest player in the top 100 and who has already made a final appearance in Birmingham last year.

Brass Monkey take down top flight opponents

Bangkok Casuals Football League Div. 1 & 2

Paul Frain
Local Pattaya team Brass Monkey FC were on their travels last weekend when they played first division The Scams, who are in mid table of the first division, so a hard match was expected. This was the first match in this season’s League Cup, with four teams in each group and the top two of each going through to the knockout stage.
The Scams started out strongly but the Brass defense kept them out and both teams did not give much quarter early on. Slowly the Brass players began to find their feet and put together some excellent moves by using the full width of the pitch, stretching the Scams defense to the limit. Brass created plenty of chances but it was not until late in the first half that they were able to take advantage of one of these when center-forward Matveev found himself in the right place to side foot the ball home after another sizzling attack.
The goal only increased the confidence of the Brass team and they continued to create (and spurn) chances until the break, going in at halftime 1-0 up.
Brass came out for the second half in a similarly determined mood and applied more pressure on the Scams defense until eventually it cracked again and Matveev scored from the edge of the box to make it 2-0.
In an effort to score a third and decisive goal the Brass players got caught too far upfield and the Scams broke away to pull a goal back and give themselves a foothold in the game. The Pattaya team would not be denied however and they continued to attack the Scams defense in droves and the pressure paid off as Dipita pounced on a mistake by the home team and made no mistake to slot the ball into the net and make it 3-1, which was the final result in the match.
This was Brass Monkey’s best performance of the season so far as they created many scoring chances and the winning margin could have been much greater.
Brass Monkey have no game this coming weekend but next week they are away to the German All Stars, again in the League Cup.

Mike & Kitty win lawn bowls pro-am

Mike & Kitty.

The Coco Club at Ban Amphur held Thailand’s first Pro-Am Indoor Lawn Bowls event on Sunday 19th January with the help of sponsorship from Siam Winery and Red Bull.\
Eight seasoned players were drawn out of the hat to be paired with 8 newcomers and play took place on a round robin league basis. The first round was a little tense with the teams settling down with their new partners but that broke the ice for a fine day of lawn bowls.
The second round saw a new star emerge in the form of Mike from Bangkok, who having only played about 3 hours of bowls still managed on one end to get three bowls within 6 inches of the Jack to help in an 11-8 win. The third round achieved results of a 9-9 draw between Margaret and John from Bangkok against Bank and Margaret from the UK as well as a 9-8 win for Mike and Kitty from Bangkok against Kelvin and Muk, which turned out to be a match winner.

Mike inch perfect with his 3 bowls.

The play off for 3rd and 4th place produced a 10-10 draw between Kelvin & Muk and Ken & Jenny but rather than go to sudden death, after 40 ends of bowls it was decided to call it a day and share the spoils. This left the finalists where Mike and Kitty - a tax Inspector from Bangkok opposed Ian and Darryl - a former police inspector from Australia.
It was Kitty (Marlee) who turned out to be the rising star by doing everything Mike asked, their team racing to a 10-0 start and despite a resurgence from the opposition they ran out comfortable winners 13-7.
All proceeds from entry fees went to the local school at Mabphukthong.

The teams pose for a group photo.

Thais dominate weakened field at Pattaya Windsurfing Championship

Pattaya city advisor Suchart Khunjeng (right) presents the RS:X Women winner’s trophy to Sarocha Phumphai.

Warunya Thongrod
Thai sailors virtually swept the board at the Jan. 10-12 Pattaya International Windsurfing Competition held at Jomtien beach, capitalizing on a greatly weakened field caused by the withdrawal of five of seven competing countries due to continuing political protests in Bangkok.
Only three of 24 trophies went to non-Thais: Ngen Ang from Myanmar who took third place in the Techno 293 Open, and and Park Jun Soo of South Korea, who took third in both the Minstral One Design Open and RS:X Men’s final.
Only 60 athletes from Thailand, Myanmar and South Korea were present when the Windsurfing Association of Thailand contest closed Jan. 12. Surfers from Hong Kong, Malaysia, Oman, Singapore and Sri Lanka dropped out in the days leading up to the three-day meet.
The event proved to be little competition for a Thai team that had hoped to use the match to prepare for the Youth Olympics in China and ASEAN Games in South Korea.

Windsurfing champs hold their trophies aloft following the prize-giving ceremony on Jan. 12 at Jomtien beach.

The championship was divided into eight divisions consisting of Beginner, Slalom B, Slalom A, Phantom 295, Techno 293 Open, Mistral One Design Open, RS:X Women and RS:X Men.
The only real drama developed in the RS:X Women’s race, where Youth Olympics Games 2010 champ Siriporn Kaewduang-ngam lost by a point to teammate Sarocha Phumphai.

Windsurfers are seen competing during the 2014 Pattaya International Windsurfing tournament.

The other overall champions were Nattasruangthon Khakhay in the beginner’s division, Chantho Dumrongkul in Slalom B, Watcharapong Janthum in Slalom A, Nawin Singhsat in Phantom 295, Thanthip Suebyubol (Techno 293 Open), Nattapong Photnopparat (Mistral One Design Open) and Ek Bunsawat (RS:X Men’s).

Thanthip Suebyubol was the winner of the Techno 293 Open class.
