Gosden & Davis win at windy Crystal Bay
PSC golf from The Growling Swan
John Davis, Nolan Wise & Mike
Gosden.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, Dec. 2, Crystal Bay, B & C – Stableford
It was another glorious day in “Paradise” as we
assembled at The Growling Swan in readiness for the journey up Sukhumvit
Road to the popular Crystal Bay Golf Course. We welcomed back Graham
“Grunter” Buckingham from his scrabble tournaments in Bangkok, Alan
“Colonel” Sanders from the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia and veteran
Don Richardson from Northern Ireland. It was sadly time to farewell Colm
Mullen, who is returning to Dublin but will be back with us in January,
2014.
Everyone was early so our 2 mini vans were able to depart the GS a touch
early at 8.25 am and after a good run through the Monday morning traffic we
arrived at the golf course 47 minutes later to find it quite busy but things
were moving along quite nicely. After a small preparation our first group
found ourselves on the B1 tee and hit off right on our 9.44 am scheduled tee
time with B & C being the allotted nines for the day.
The weather was fabulous being not too hot although sunny but there was a
fairly stiff breeze to make things a touch difficult as we found out later
when the scores came in.
Takeshi Hakozaki, Duangjai
Tusagad, Gary Monley & Alan Sanders.
The golf course was in terrific condition
with the usual lush fairways although the greens were a bit grainy and
inconsistent causing a few problems for some. There were some slower groups
ahead which held us up for a while but things quickened up on the back nine
and we managed to complete a very enjoyable round in four hours & twenty
minutes.
We had 2 Divisions – Division A for handicaps 0 to 17 and Division B for
handicaps of 18 & over with three places in each. There were also rewards
for nearest the pin on the four par 3’s and longest first putts on the B9 &
C9 greens.
The winner in Division A was Mike “Hunter” Gosden with a fine 39 points,
followed by Tom McMahon in second place with 37 points. With 2 golfers on 34
points a count back was required which saw your writer, Peter “Blacky”
Blackburn (21 point back nine) taking third spot from the luckless Mark
“Westy” West (20 point back nine).
John Davis won the B Division with 39 points, 2 points ahead of Sandy “Cindy
Lauper” Leiper in second place and Ebrahim came third with 36 points.
Division A (0-17)
1st Mike Gosden (14) 39pts
2nd Tom McMahon (17) 37pts
3rd Peter Blackburn (12) 34pts
Division B (18+)
1st John Davis (19) 39pts
2nd Sandy Leiper (36) 37pts
3rd Ebrahim (18) 36pts
Near Pins: B4 – Takeshi Hakozaki, B6 – Mike Gosden, C4 – Duangjai Tusagad,
C7 – Peter Blackburn
Long Putts: B9 – Roy Dayton, C9 – Peter Blackburn
The Growling Swan NAGA Award (awarded to the
golfer who has the worst score on the day) was won by Nolan Wise who broke
his winning streak and returned to mediocrity (it happens to us all) and he
accepted the award like the good sport that he is.
Wednesday, Dec. 4, Plutaluang West & North –
4-Person Scramble
As it was the King’s Birthday – Father’s Day
Public Holiday on the Thursday, we decide to play on Wednesday instead and
for something different we decided to have a 4-person scramble with a random
draw. The idea turned out to be an outstanding success as we had 36 players
wanting to play and also a list of emergencies.
The venue was to be Plutaluang and we gathered at The Growling Swan in
readiness for the journey to the course and on this occasion it was
necessary to have four mini vans to transport us. Unfortunately we had 1
player who decided not to play at the last minute and it was too late to
call on a reserve so we were left with a field of 35 which meant 8 groups of
four and one group of three.
We welcomed back the colorful Bjarne Kjaer after injury and time spent in
his homeland and also Connections Bar ‘Mine Host’ Alan Ewing who was
returning after several months “in the wilderness”.
Everyone was on time so we left the GS 5 minutes ahead of schedule at 8.25
am and headed south down No. 3 and had a very good run, arriving at the
course 42 minutes later.
We had plenty of time as our designated tee time was 10.40 am and we were
informed that we would be playing the West & North nines in that order so it
was time to do the random draw. Names were pulled out of a hat (with plenty
of witnesses) to determine the groups & playing order and we then proceeded
to the West 1 tee where there were a couple of groups waiting to tee off
before we could get the first of our nine groups away. Nonethless we were
able to send Group 1 away 30 minutes ahead of schedule at 10.10 am and the
scene was set for a very enjoyable day.
The weather was fabulous with a nice cooling breeze and the golf course was
in excellent shape with the greens very well maintained and much quicker
than the ones on East & South nines traditionally are. We were initially
held up by slower groups in front but they soon got away from us and our
pace quickened somewhat. It was a lot of fun and our group found birdies
very hard to get but it was extremely enjoyable and we finished our round in
the very good time of three hours & fifty five minutes.
We were rewarding first, second and third places and there were also rewards
for nearest the pin on the four par 3’s and longest first putts on the West
9 & North 9 greens.
The winning team was Alan Sanders, Gary Monley, Duangjai Tusagad & Takeshi
Hakozaki with a net score of 61.6 and in second place was the team of Roy
Dayton, Andrew Allen, Ed Stuart & Patrick Poussier with a net 62.8. In third
place was the team of Peter Grey, Kevin Waycott, Scott Leszcynski & Frank
Sharratt who had a net 63.1.
Near Pins: W3 – Roy Dayton, W8 – Kevin Waycott, N3 – Mark Stapleton, N6 –
Frank Sharratt
Long Putts: W9 – Paul Hack, N9 – Frank Sharratt
There was no NAGA award on this day because of the
team format but Max kindly paraded Deefa the Dog who collected many
donations for charity from our very generous Growling Swan golfers.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low & high
handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play Mondays
& Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker Bar) in Soi
Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at 8.30 am. For bookings or
more information please contact Peter on 0806 351 386 or email to
[email protected].
We also play bowls out of the Growling Swan every Wednesday and Sunday.
Sunday is Lawn Bowls and Wednesday is Indoor Bowls. All are welcome and for
anyone that is interested the transport leaves The Growling Swan at 10.00am
on each of those mornings. For more information please contact Paul Rennison
on 0843 454 005.

The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC)
at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
December started on the second for the Pattaya Golf
Society with a visit to a very windy Green Valley to play a stableford
event on the well presented course, with full fairways and quick greens
- probably set that way to satisfy the new six-minute start time
initiative! However, a joy it was to be there with the two divisions cut
at twelve and under.
In the second flight perpetual runner-up Phil McClure again managed it,
this time with Jim Ferris on the same score of 34 points. The winner in
a close event was Murray Edwards with 35 points.
In the top flight Yasuo Suzuki finished in third with 35 points whilst
Wichai Tananusorn and Martin Grimoldby tied for the win with 36 points
each; Martin recording the day’s best gross figures of 77.
The ‘2’s pot was shared by top flight golfers Brian Beaupre, Yasuo
Suzuki nd Khun Wichai whilst the Booby Bevy went to a slightly
embarrased “Banjo” Bannister after his week began ten shots over whilst
the previous week had seen him finish ten under, a true hero-to-zero
performance!
Gold Plaiter
On Friday, 6th December the Pattaya Golf Society visited a full Crystal
Bay to play a stableford competition on the B and C nines which were in
excellent condition, with the B greens running at a delicious pace and
the C greens only slightly slower. The large field was divided into two
flights at fourteen and under and the warm conditions made for good
scoring.
In the top flight Wichai Tananusorn took third place with 37 points, one
shot in arrears to the joint winners Martin Grimoldby and Peter Wilson,
both finishing on 38 points. Martin’s gross 75 was the best of the day
and emphasized what a solid and skilful golfer the Englishman is.
In the second flight Dave Lehane took third place with 37 points whilst
Jim Ferris and Dave Plaiter shared the flight win with 38 points each.
There were four birdie ‘2’s for Martin Grimoldby (2), Peter Wilson and
Brian Talbot but these were eclipsed by the group’s twelfth competition
hole-in-one in the last nine years. It came on the signature hole, B6 as
Dave Plaiter stroked an admirable eight iron to the back of the hole,
running it back in true style. Up went the caddies and the cheers could
be heard two holes away! Congratulations Dave and thanks for the bell
ringing back in Soi Buakhao!
The Booby Bevy went to Gubbi Innvaer for his low score of the day and
Rabbi’s consolation beer went to Brian Talbot on his final round this
trip.
It had been another truly memorable day for the PGS and one which Dave
Plaiter will remember for a long time.

Steve Mann shoots net 64 to win the Mug
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Steve Mann (centre), winner of the
monthly medal, with runner-up David Davies (right) and third placed Tim Knight.
Monday, Dec. 2, Burapha - Stableford
The Outback has been a loyal supporter of Burapha every Monday, through high
and low season for more than six years but our numbers are at an all time
low as they fall below 20 players. This is disappointing but largely of
their (Burapha’s) own doing when they hiked the price to play here up over
30%, which many have found unwarranted. We remain hopeful though that some
agreement can be reached to reduce the green fee to a more acceptable level.
As for the golf today, the 19 players were on the A & B nines again but this
time from the blue tees, and looking at the scores we see Div B outshining
Div A by a country mile; for example, had Tim Knight (5th in Div B) been
playing in Div A, his 35pts would have won by two!
An amazing top score of the day was recorded by John O’Keefe with 43pts,
which won him Div B by five from B2 (Bruce McAdam) and Jon Kittilsen,
finishing in the frame again one point further back, whilst Div A was won by
Peter Nixon on c/b from the rapidly improving, Greg Hill, both on 33.
Today marked the start of the 2014 Race2Bkk, which will run throughout the
first half of next year, culminating in the final to be held sometime in
August. All prize monies earned throughout the year will be converted to
points and totalled, with the top 20 or 24 going through to the final, to
play for the top prize of 20,000 Baht.
There was just one ‘2’, from Jon Kittilsen on B3.
Div A (0-16)
1st Peter Nixon (11) 33pts
2nd Greg Hill (16) 33pts
3rd Wally Brown (13) 32pts
Div B (17+)
1st John O’Keefe (18) 43pts
2nd Bruce McAdam (28) 38pts
3rd Jon Kittilsen (22) 37pts
Wednesday, Dec. 4, Bangpra - Stableford
This was our second high season visit to Bangpra, which proved
yet again to be very popular as the booking number was increased twice from
the original 16 up to 24. With an 8.30am start and a gorgeous sunny morning,
this is truly the time to play this wonderful course; a beautiful setting,
the bougainvillea in full bloom and bountiful wildlife, although the monkeys
were a little scarce.
Greeted by the head starter, “Starting from the 10th, go when you’re ready”,
set us all up for a less than four hour round with a very smooth transition
onto the first tee and the course was once again in fantastic condition with
the greens playing their usual part in various players tales of woe.
No such tales however from two players who stood head and shoulders above
the rest, both recent winners: John O’Keefe (already cut 2 shots following
his 43pts on Monday) who easily won Div A with 40pts and Jon Kittilsen, who
took Div B with 41.
The minor places in Div A were taken by Svenn Lund (2nd) some eight shots
adrift with 32 and Wally Brown (31), who was having his last game with us
before returning to Aus.
In Div B, Tim Knight (after taking the money from John & Jack) found himself
in second on 34 from late entrant Ivan Plunkett in third with 32. An
interesting group, who played together, Jon, Svenn, Ivan & Tim – all
finished on the podium.
Finally, a special welcome back to Ray Dell - great to see you, shame about
the golf but I know you had a good day out.
There were two ‘2’s, both on the 2nd hole, from Eddy Beilby & Peter Nixon.
Div A (0-16)
1st John O’Keefe (16) 40pts
2nd Svenn Ole Lund (13) 32pts
3rd Wally Brown (13) 31pts
Div B (17+)
1st Jon Kittilsen (22) 41pts
2nd Tim Knight (24) 34pts
3rd Ivan Plunkett (24) 32pts
Friday, Dec. 6, Green Valley – Monthly Medal
A beautiful blue sky again but a chilly 26 degrees with a cool
breeze, a far cry from Angus’s round in the UK where it was also sunny but a
Baltic 8 degrees, see you in Feb next year.
36 Outbackers turned out to play in our Monthly Medal sponsored by the
Outback Bar and then Greg Hirst of DeVere Financial will kindly continue to
sponsor all the Monthly Medals throughout 2014.
We teed off on time but it was slow for the first three or four holes, which
is not unusual here, before we got a bit of a move on, however the course
was very busy and four and a half hours was the best we could do.
Nevertheless, the course is still in excellent condition although the greens
had been cored and sanded but they were still relatively fast.
It’s been a while coming; his driving has been wayward, his putting not his
best and short game off colour, but today Steve Mann got it all together to
shoot one of his best rounds in a very long time, a fine 75 off the stick
(net 64) to win the low gross medal and collect the unique Outback monthly
trophy. It was an excellent round of golf to win by three from David Davies
(67) and Tim Knight (69), with Suzi, off a wicked handicap of 28, also
firing a good round for a net 69 despite her first drive of about one meter
with the ball not even leaving tee box.
Other Race2Bkk double point winners included Eddy Beilby (70), Scott Golden
(70), welcome back mate, and last but by no means least, John Lawton (73).
Congratulations to all who attended the presentation, I can’t remember the
last time all the podium finishers were present, and thanks to Steve for his
very generous “bell ring”.
There were seven ‘2’s from Maurice Copan (4th), Paul Bourke, Peter LeNoury,
Stephen Mann, Steve Plant & Neil Skilton (all on the 12th) and David Davies
(on the 16th).
1st Stephen Mann (11) net 64
2nd David Davies (26) net 67
3rd Tim Knight (24) net 69
4th Suzi Lawton (28) net 69
5th Eddy Beilby (18) net 70
6th Scott Golden (21) net 70
7th John Lawton (20) net 73

Gibson sneaks ahead of the pack
PSC golf from The Caddshack
Monday 2nd December at Green Valley saw
Mel Davis (H/cap 18) take top position with 37 points while alone in second
was Derek Wilkin (18) with 36 points. This left Roger Rush (17) to take
third from Don Hachey (18) on count back, both with 35 points.
Dave Gibson.
Wednesday 4th we played the Navy course at
Plutaluang and victory went to Dave Gibson (15) with 38 points. As you can
see from the photo, Dave did it with his eyes closed and he also grips his
club in a very strange manner.
We had four players tied on 37 points and it took a while to figure out the
count back but emerging in second was Don Hachey (18) from Phonsie McGahan
(6), who took third from Rick Culley and Ted Gardener.
Friday was back to Green Valley and Paul Walia (14) took first place with 39
points. Phonsie McGahan (6) took second on count back from Don Hachey (18),
both with 35 points, and alone in fourth was Brian ‘SLIC’ Orr (16) with 34
points.
Note: The Caddyshack is located on Soi 17 off 3rd road or soi 8 off
Thepprasit. All golfers are welcome and reservations taken at 081 865 3104.

Christmas comes early for Pat and Jum
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday, Dec. 1, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Pat Regan (15) 39pts
2nd Terry Mangan (15) 39pts
B Flight
1st Bob Lindborg (21) 38pts
2nd Jum Karagit (19) 34pts
Near Pins: No 4 Eddy Beilby No 9 Jum Karagit No 12 Jum Karagit No 16 Nick Shaw
The saddest story of the day was that ‘Broad more’ Bob fell completely out of
the A Flight hardware with the best score of the day on count back, and there
was no sympathy from anyone. Bob’s 39 points was matched by the Irish pair of
Pat Regan and Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan who filled the two-man podium with better
back nines; Pat with the gold and Terry with the silver.
Pat Regan & Jum Karagit.
The day’s good news was that Pat’s better
looking half Jum Karagit took the silver in B Flight along with two near pins
and the days only ‘2’. If you shed a tear for Bob, spare a thought for Big
Gareth who Jum beat on count back.
Bob ‘the Guru of Green Valley’ Lindborg stood atop the B Flight podium with a
splendid 38 points.
Monday, Dec. 2, Greenwood A & B - Stableford
A Flight
1st Kevin McEntee (6) 38pts
2nd Charles Cunningham (17) 35pts
B Flight
1st Mike Jefferys (18) 34pts
2nd Jorn Finnerup (26) 33pts
To start the week right, the society decided to open a chapter of the Hwy 331
road warriors and A Flight seemed to weather the ride slightly better than their
B Flight compatriots. Co. Offaly gang man Kevin ‘you know who’ was man of the
match with a fine 38 points, three more than his flight mate Charles Cunningham.
Mike ‘the Welsh wizard’ Jefferys stood atop a slack jawed podium with his 34
points while his fellow step climber was Irishman Jorn Finnerup, just a shot
adrift.
No ‘2’s were recorded so a rollover to Tuesday.
Tuesday, Dec. 3, Burapha A & B – Stableford
A Flight
1st Ian Pickles (16) 40pts
2nd Bruce Anderson (10) 36pts
B Flight
1st Jim Elphick (23) 40pts
2nd Christian Boysen (23) 38pts
Burapha is a perennial favorite and the challenge today were the A+B layouts. It
came down to two wily seasoned society members to head the standings; Ian
Pickles in the premier flight and Jimmy’ two shots’ Elphick in the junior
division, both with excellent 40 point returns. Denmark’s Christian Boysen
followed Jim up the junior flight podium steps with a steady 38 points. Bruce
Anderson took the silver in the premier flight but needed the aid of a count
back verdict over the unlucky Aussie star Kevin Rogers.
Colin Davis and Freddy Starbeck shared the rollover 2’s pot.
Wednesday, Dec. 4, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Reg McKay (16) 42pts
2nd Nick Odnoral (16) 38pts
3rd Kevin McEntee (6) 36pts
B Flight
1st Colin Davis (18) 43pts
2nd Ray Fowlis (36) 39pts
3rd Jim Elphick (23) 36pts
Colin ‘the Donkey’ Davis, who has been a bit dormant lately by his standards,
put an end to any speculation, if there was any, that he may be on the decline.
His 43 point lashing was good for the B Flight top spot and man of the match
honors. This meant bad luck for Ray ‘hub cap’ Fowlis and his 39 points and the
awakening Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick with his even par round.
Scotland’s Bucky boy Reg McKay was the top man in A Flight as his excellent 42
points held off Aussie outbacker Nick Odnoral, who himself had a solid 38
points. Kevin ‘you know who’ rounded out the flight with a steady even par
round.
Reg McKay, Colin Davis Liam McGuiness, and Ed Wyckoff shared the 2’s pot
Friday, Dec. 6, Plutaluang - Stableford
A Flight
1st Freddy Starbeck (14) 39pts
2nd Reg McKay (16) 33pts
3rd Tore Eliassen (15) 33pts
B Flight
1st Walter Baechil (17) 37pts
2nd Mike Jeffreys (18) 35pts
3rd Lou Szig; igeti (18) 35pts
C Flight
1st Christian Boysen (23) 36pts
2nd Jim Reid (27) 36pts
3rd Ray Fowlis (36) 34pts
Freddy Starbeck was clearly man of the match as his A Flight capturing 39 points
were six clear of Scotland’s own Buckie boy Reg McKay and Tore Eliassen. A count
back decided who was to claim the second step on the podium, with the scales of
justice tipping in Mr. MacKay’s favor, not that Tore was that much bothered as
he had the only ‘2’ of the day.
One of the most fluorescent and flamboyant golfers on the Eastern Seaboard,
Walter Baechil, is always a welcome addition to the society ranks. Walter made
it a worthwhile trip today as he took the top spot in B Flight with a delightful
37 points, edging out Mike ‘the Welsh wizard’ Jeffreys and Reg McKay on count
back. Reg was the count back victim as Mike followed Walter up the podium steps.
C Flight was won by Freddy’s mate Christian Boysen via a third count back as he
outpointed Jim ‘am I losing you’ Reid. Ray ‘hub cap’ Fowlis rounded out the
flight two shots adrift.

The Fast & The Furious
PSC Golf from Siam Country Resort
Tuesday, Dec. 3, Greenwood - Stableford
First up was Tuesday’s visit to Greenwood where we went with the A & B
combination from the white tees. The course was in good condition, with the
greens running true & fast, especially on any downhill sliders where 3 putts
were an ever present concern.
Dave Edwards.
Joel Flor (23) got away to a furious
start, turning in 22 points before spinning his wheels somewhat on the back,
to sign for a perhaps disappointing 34 points after such a good start. Dave
Edwards (17) showed some good shot making skills to complete his score of 33
points, ahead of Jeff Wylie (7) who got the better of Brian Maddox (20) on
count back 17/11, after both had 32 points.
Joel & Dave shared the near pins, Dave making a nice 2 on B5.
Friday, Dec. 6, Pattana - Stableford
With Thursday being a holiday for the King’s birthday, we opted to play
Friday at Pattana with the B & C loop being the allocated test. It was
another great day for golf, although there were some calls for the wind to
abate a little, which it did as the day progressed. B1 in the wind is
probably the most intimidating hole in the area, and even more so when it is
the first challenge of the day, but it gets easier from there (sometimes).
Jeff Wylie (7) was best able to come to terms with the course and
conditions, finishing with 34 points, ahead of Jonathan Pratt (11) who came
home in an ambulance, (1 point in the last 3 holes), to finish with 29
points.
Near pins went to Paddy & Jeff with 3, finishing with a birdie, a par and a
3-putt bogey for those short holes.
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off Siam Country
Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn right after 50
metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres along. Golf from here
is generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with the Resort hosting prompt
presentations on both days.
As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies & seniors
who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling
or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

O’Brien sinks an ‘Ace’ at Mountain Shadow
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Derek Brook
Tuesday, Dec. 4, Khao Kheow – Stableford
Well at the end of the day the good news is that
Tom Herrington did not lose on count back, mind there is plenty of time for
him in the coming weeks.
Mike O’Brien.
The crew met early at Tropical Bert’s and
we had more than a full house, so as I told the golfers to remember to book
early and if you cannot play make certain that you inform the organizer. So
with our large group we informed the course that we had more than were
booked and they very kindly slipped the extras in. As usual, the help given
by this course is always exemplary.
We arrived there in plenty of time and the test for the day was to be the B
& C nines. I have to say that the C nine is my least favourite and I usually
mess up the last three holes. However, a test is a test.
The previous week I played with Bob Watson and saw how well a fine amateur
could play. I watched him to see if I could learn anything, apart from being
20 years too old. Never be afraid of playing with good players, they had to
start somewhere also and I have learned over the years they are usually very
good with the duffers they play with.
Having lost 50 yards off the tee I thought I would take note of his power
game and thought I had spotted something that since I was a single
handicapper, some years ago, I have let slip. So I decided to try a new
idea, in fact back to how I used to play 20 years ago. But would it work
with my new ‘Goldie Oldie’ body? That was the question.
Well, right from the off I hit the ball like I had not done for donkey’s
years and turned the clock back. Not only that, all the puts went into the
hole as well. It is really good when you go out and all your game is back,
indeed after 9 holes I was so chuffed with 25 points I thought this could be
a great round. Then the other players reminded me how well I was playing and
I was onto the C nine. You know how it is after a great nine when the wheels
fall off. Question was, could I keep it together enough on my least
favourite nine to sneak in?
Meanwhile, the man who usually does the same to me as most players do to Tom
Herrington, i.e. win on count back, was having a great back nine. Mashi was
on a run!
The greens on the back nine are not as slick as the greens on the B nine but
the test is I think a tough one and as usual I blew C7, 8 & 9. Now it got a
bit nervy.
I always expect the players off the Red/Silver tees to do well here and I am
usually not let down. The Red tees are so far in front of the Yellow that it
gives them a decided advantage and with the wind very strong, being closer
to the green on B8 gives them a good chance of hitting the island green.
Tuesday’s winners, Derek Brook
(right) and Mashi Kaneta (left) pose for a photo with Pu.
Back at Bert’s it was soon time to declare
the scores. In the A Flight, 0 to 18, the winner with a great comeback on
the C nine was Mashi with 37 points on count back over Steve Hamstad. In
third was Landis Brooks with 35 points and in fourth was Tom Herrington with
34 points and fortunately no count back.
In the B Flight, with the best score of the day, the winner was your scribe,
Derek Brook, with 40 points despite a real case of ‘L.M.F’ on the back nine.
In second with 36 points was Mick Coghlan, with Barry Oats third on 34
points, edging a count back over Rita Zoebelli in fourth.
With the bar full a great night was then had by all and I even thanked Bob
Watson for being a good golfer to copy. Mind, I rather think that with the
memory bit coming in it might be a problem remembering how to play next
time.
Near Pin: Brian Parish, Tom Herrington, Max Scott, Tom Cotton
Long Putt: Mashi Kaneta, Brian Parish
Friday, Dec. 6, Mt. Shadow – Stableford
We had another big group of players turn up to
play this popular course on Friday and we got away off the 1st tee with a
gale blowing, as it did for the whole day. With the strong wind some of us
spent much of the day in the rough, and for me it was a question of after
The Lord Mayor’s Show.
The fairways were as expected but what was apparent was that the greens were
very slick and not helped by the wind blowing us all over the place. It was
a tough day.
When my group reached the par-3 15th hole, the group in front of us seemed
to be standing for a long time on the green and waving their arms. After we
were finally able to play our tee shots I went up to ask why they took so
long on the green, only to be informed that Mike O’Brien had got a hole in
one. Well that of course made certain that we would have a lot of players at
Bert’s after we got back. But very well done Mike!
Winner of the A Flight today, 0 to 19, was Bob Watson with a great 37
points, ahead of Steve Hamstad in second with 34. In third we had a count
back on 32 points that saw Dick Warberg edge out John Davis.
In the B Flight we had Brian Gabe as winner with 37 points ahead of Mick
Coglan in second with 30, and in third was Mike O’Brien with 28 points on
count back over Henry O’Brien.
T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Mick Coghlan, Graham Buckingham, Max Bracegirdle, Mike O’Brien.
Long Putt: Daryl Evans, Bruce Berlin

Baechli back on top
PSC golf from Café Kronborg
Walter Baechli, Kurt
Sandgaard and Dave Richardson.
Monday, Dec. 2, Pattavia -
Stableford
This was our second trip to Pattavia in 4 days and after we checked in
we got off the first tee 10 minutes early under sunny skies and with a
big wind.
The course was in fine condition and even the bunkers were raked, but it
was a rather slow round of 4 hours and 30 minutes.
Back in the clubhouse welcomes went out to Torben Sorensen from Canada
and Mike Allidi.
We had enough for two flights today with the cut at handicap 18. Mike
Allidi won the A Flight with 34 points ahead of Leif Kirkgaard in second
on a count back over Walter Baechli, both on 33. Ian Pickels took fourth
spot on a count back from Tate Akifumi, both returning 32 point scores.
Elias Magnusson topped the podium in the B Flight with just 32 points,
one better than Svende Gaarde in second, while Karl Beter and Susan
filled the minor places.

Thursday, Dec. 4, Treasure Hill - Stableford
It was up the 331 for the third time in a week,
this time to play Treasure Hill which was in fine shape but the greens
staff managed to douse most areas around the greens leaving them soggy
underfoot.
We had a fairly quick round of 4 hours and 10 minutes and back in the
clubhouse we said farewell to Kurt Sandgaard and Ian Pickels, both whom
will be returning after the new year.
Two flights today with the cut at handicap 22 and the ever-colorful
Walter Bachli topped the A Flight with a fine 37 points, four ahead of
Mike Allidi in second while Brian Gabe took third on a count back over
Leif Kirkgaard, both on 31 points.
Kurt Sandgaard won the B Flight with a meager 29 points, one better than
Dave Richardson in second, and Susan Gaarde placed third after pipping
husband Svend on a count back, both tied on 26 points.

Golfnutter: Seeking Rulings
Leftie in a spot of bother.
When watching the pros strut their
stuff on golf’s made-for-TV worldwide stage, I used to wonder why they
appeared to have as much understanding of the Rules of Golf as a newbie.
How many times, for instance, do we see a pro ask for a ruling from an
official that involves the most fundamental of situations? “Surely,” one
asks the TV set, “he knows the answer to that?”
The odds are the pro does indeed know the answer, but seeks a level of
assurance that removes all doubt. Take the majors, where there is
usually a rules official inside the ropes accompanying each playing
group, it becomes easy for a player simply to seek a ruling over any
possible problem. He would be silly not to for the very reason that once
he acts in accordance with an official’s ruling, that player cannot be
penalised – even if the ruling is later proved incorrect.
One downside to this – if it can be so described – is that over time
pros become far less knowledgeable on the Rules, which leads to the
situation referred to above; seeking clarification on the most basic of
rulings. The other downside is that it slows the pace of play.
The R&A’s website publishes a Rules Report after each Open Championship
which tells an interesting story. At this year’s championship at
Muirfield there were 234 rulings, compared to the 339 the year prior at
Lytham, where the unusually high water-table saw excessive casual water.
The report states the majority of Muirfield’s rulings were simple
affairs such as unplayable ball (18 rulings), identifying ball (17),
interference from movable obstructions like cables (20) and relief from
immovable obstructions such as sprinkler heads (29). So much for the
straightforward events, but the following incidences were anything but:
Rub of the Green: Thomas Bjorn, in playing his second from the rough on
his opening hole, hit his ball into a TV camera, breaking its screen. TV
cameras are an outside agency so when a player’s ball in motion is
deflected or stopped, it is deemed rub of the green; no penalty, play it
as it lies. Bjorn, I’m sure, would have preferred the option of
replaying the shot, without penalty, as he went on to double-bogey
thanks to the terrible lie.
During the same round, Luke Donald’s third shot at the par-five 9th was
so badly pulled that it hit the top of a boundary wall before hitting
the hospitality complex beyond the boundary and ricocheting back into
bounds, all the way to the front of the green. He took advantage of this
rub of the green by getting up and down for par.
Slow Play: The Rules of Golf allow for local committees to establish
their own policy regarding pace of play (Rule 6-7). The policy adopted
at all R&A Championships sees each hole given a time limit. If a group
falls behind the accumulated time and more than their initial starting
gap behind the group in front, they are considered out of position and
put on the clock. When this occurs the first player to play a tee-shot,
approach shot or putt, has 50 seconds to play, whilst the other players
in the group have 40 seconds. They are taken off the clock when they are
either back in position with the group in front, or back on their time
schedule. These rules are an integral part of any R&A Tournament,
including The Open.
During the third round, Hideki Matsuyama’s group was put on the clock on
the 15th as they were 15 minutes over their scheduled time and five
minutes out of position on the group ahead. Matsuyama’s first bad time
was recorded on his first putt at one minute 12 seconds. He was advised
of this bad time and told a repeat would be penalised.
His second bad time came with his second shot on the 17th. As his tee
shot had gone into the crowd, he was given additional time to deal with
the spectators and to go forward to assess his shot. The timing
therefore only started when he returned to his ball. He then took a
further two minutes 12 seconds to play the shot. The five he scored thus
became six.
Ball Interfering with Play: I recall watching TV coverage of the second
round, showing Graeme McDowell re-marking his ball on the 4th green as
it was interfering with Tiger Wood’s line of putt. After Tiger had
played, Gmac replaced his ball and putted out – from the same spot! On
reading the R&A report I now realise Gmac had previously marked his ball
away from the original spot. What I witnessed was Gmac marking his ball
for a second time, and thus returning it to its original spot. I wonder
how many phone-ins the tournament organisers received.
Next week: Rulings Part Two.

Rodney waves goodbye on a high
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, Dec. 2, Mt. Shadow -
Stableford
CSS 72
1st Allen Raaen (9) 39pts
2nd Garry Barling (9) 34pts
3rd Jens Gunnarsson (14) 32pts
4th Rodney Nabbe (10) 31pts
5th John Dahlseng (19) 30pts
Mountain Shadow as always was in good condition and as usual it played
pretty tough, but at least on this occasion one player bettered par and
won the day by a clear five shots.
Rodney Nabbe.
This golfer was Allen Raaen, who has
been consistently playing well even after taking the added
responsibilities normally shouldered by Trevor Schirmer who is still
away in Oz, no doubt delighting in the renaissance of Australian cricket
and unlikely to return while the iron is still hot and being applied to
the Old Enemies’ rear. Allen’s three under handicap ensured that he
returned to his previous 8 just in time for the Club Championships which
took place on Dec. 9 & 11.
Garry Barling continued his good run of form that has seen him appear on
the podium several times during this trip, but he unfortunately returned
home just as the Championships were beginning.
Jens Gunnarsson was another Championships non-starter as he also was
returning to sea but he claimed a place on the podium today as a going
away present. Rodney Nabbe took fourth with John Dahlseng in fifth as
the rest of the field spluttered to the end with many sad stories to
relate in the bar.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Jens Gunnarsson sank the
lone one to take the first division pot.
Before the presentations were made there was a welcome back for Stephen
Lewis.
Friday, Dec. 6, Khao Kheow - Stableford
CSS 73
Division 1(0–14)
1st Rodney Nabbe (10) 36pts
2nd Garry Barling (9) 34pts
3rd Peter Skinner (11) 34pts
4th Keith Evans (7) 33pts
Division 2 (15+)
1st Phillip Cass (21) 38pts
2nd Shuichi Kodaka (18) 33pts
3rd Don Everett (19) 32pts
4th Hal Hart (20) 31pts
5th Russell Gilroy (16) 30pts
Allen Raaen.
Even following the full turnout from
Soi 13 for Wednesday’s Santa Scramble, there were still plenty of
players available to take on the always difficult Pete Dye designed Khao
Kheow A and B courses, which were found to be in tip top condition with
the A course being especially good following its recent renovation. As
usual the going was tough and resulted in the CSS for the day moving out
to 73, even though the quality of the field was particularly high.
Rodney Nabbe made his final outing with the group one to remember with a
solid level handicap round that was good enough by two to take the top
spot in division one, ahead of a count back between Garry Barling and
Peter Skinner which the former won with a better 19 to 16 to claim
second spot. Keith Evans slipped into fourth just a further shot back.
The second division was led in by Phillip Cass whose two under handicap
was not only the best of the day but was good by five to win his first
competition for some time.
Phillip Cass.
Shuichi Kodaka is still looking for
the form that saw his handicap reduce to 15 some months previously but
did enough on the day to take second place ahead of Don Everett in
third, Hal Hart in fourth and Russell Gilroy fifth.
Once again there were no 2’s in the second division but Allen Raaen and
Garry Barry added to their day’s winnings by sharing the first division
pool.
Prior to the presentations there were welcome backs for Paul Gill, Dick
Heaney, and John Squitiero together with ones for Riitta and Pekka
Palmu. There was also a farewell for Rodney Nabbe heading back to the
south of Sydney to settle back and watch some locals skinning a few
rabbits.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact
mobile 094 567 5726 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13,
between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is
arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should
be there by 8.15 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that
you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our

Melia a multiple winner
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Tony Scambler (centre) receives the
November Golfer of the Month trophy, congratulated by Gordon Melia (right) – the
golfer of the week!
Monday, Dec. 2, Bangpra - Stableford
Glorious golfing weather today as our five groups of golfers set off from The
Ranch for our visit to the popular “monkey course”.
The first group tee’d off slightly ahead of schedule with a fresh breeze keeping
the temperature down to non-sweating levels for the first time this year. With
no groups in sight ahead of them the leaders soon opened a significant gap ahead
of the second group, and the round progressed smoothly until they caught up to a
three-ball ahead of them on the 17th green, eventually completing the round in
under four hours – millionaires golf indeed!
The course was in great condition but the difficult greens took their toll again
and no player managed to better his handicap on the day. Keith Smithson won the
A Flight (20 points on the back nine), beating John Graham on the count back,
with Tim Winder one point behind.
Gordon Melia took the honours in the B Flight (despite having his handicap cut
by one shot) ahead of Daryl Whyte who was playing his first game since his
return from Canada. John Hughes took third place in the B Flight, but managed to
arrive back at The Ranch too late for the presentation and generously donated
his prize to the club funds! Today’s prizes were generously sponsored by KPK
Foods.
A Flight
1st Keith Smithson (2) 35pts
2nd John Graham (10) 35pts
3rd Tim Winder (15) 34pts
B Flight
1st Gordon Melia (19) 33pts
2nd Daryl Whyte (23) 31pts
3rd John Hughes (16) 29pts
Near Pins: Keith Smithson, Geoff Parker, Mike Corner and Paul Smith.
Wednesday, Dec. 4, Khao Kheow C & A - Stableford
Another bright sunny morning with a cool breeze provided almost
perfect golfing conditions for the second game in a row. We were allocated to
play on the C and A courses and the first group tee’d off on schedule on the
tricky par five opening hole on the C course.
The course was generally in good condition although the greens on the A nine
were slower and bumpier than those on the outward nine, being in the process of
recovering from recently having been cored.
Gordon Melia showed why Khaow Kheow is one of his favourite courses and romped
home to win the honours on the day with an impressive score of 40 points. Geoff
Cox produced his best round for quite some time to take second place in the B
Flight one point ahead of Mike Corner.
Colin Greig and Geoff Parker had a nip and tuck battle in the A flight and were
tied on thirty three points on the 18th tee, Colin going on to par the hole
whilst Geoff came unstuck in the greenside bunker to record his only “blob” of
the day.
Following the presentation back at The Ranch, Tony Scambler was presented with
the November Golfer of the Month trophy and generously rang the bell for his
fellow competitors.
A Flight
1st Colin Greig (8) 36pts
2nd Geoff Parker (13) 33pts
3rd Tony Scambler (9) 32pts
B Flight
1st Gordon Melia (19) 40pts
2nd Geoff Cox (16) 37pts
3rd Mike Corner (20) 36pts
Near Pins: Richard Baldotto, Keith Norman, Colin Greig and Rab McDonald.
Friday, Dec. 6, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
The weather today was once again bright and cool to wind up a week of
almost perfect golfing weather, although the breeze today was considerably
stronger and would prove to be a major influence on the scoring.
The course was busy and the first few holes were played at a snail’s pace, but
fortunately the pace of play picked up as the round progressed. The breeze was
causing difficulties for all the golfers and some of the pin positions on the
day were verging on the ridiculous. In particular the hole on the 10th green was
cut on the front slope of the green and any putt missing the hole, even putting
uphill from the front of the green, rolled back down the slope and off the
front.
Gordon Melia produced another fine performance to win the B Flight for the third
consecutive game, seven points clear of second placed Reg Smart. It can only be
a matter of time before Gordon’s handicap gets cut down to his previous level
and he returns to the A Flight, to give someone else a chance in the higher
handicap division.
November’s Golfer of the Month, Tony Scambler won the A Flight one point ahead
of Gerry Cooney.
A Flight
1st Tony Scambler (9) 33pts
2nd Gerry Cooney (12) 32pts
3rd Colin Greig (8) 31pts
B Flight
1st Gordon Melia (18) 35pts
2nd Reg Smart (27) 28pts
3rd Peter Habgood (17) 27pts
Near Pins: Keith Norman, Gerry Cooney, Rab McDonald and Tony Scambler.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play out of The
Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and almost opposite
the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and
Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive golf
competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new players
are always welcome. Contact “Buff” on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663 for all

A glorious week
on the fairways
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Andy Rich
What a beautiful week! Ok, not if you are an England cricketer or a Man Utd
footballer perhaps, but for golfers in Pattaya the weather last week was
perfect, with clear blue skies, a gentle cooling breeze and the courses in
magnificent condition. It really was a week to make you feel glad to be
alive. The King of Thailand celebrated his 86th birthday and God was in his
heaven.
Mike Rushant.
The many nationalities of golfers who come
to play golf in Thailand could not have picked a better week and the
winner’s podium certainly had an international flavor: on Monday it was an
Englishman, on Tuesday an Asian, on Thursday a Canadian and on Saturday an
Australian.
Monday, Dec. 2,
The Emerald - Stableford
On Monday the TRGG headed off to a favourite
course of our clientele, Emerald. The very consistent Tom Kett did the
business and walked off with first prize but was closely followed by Dorsey
Richardson and Mike Rushant.
1st Tom Kett (19) 37pts
2nd Dorsey Richardson (17) 36pts
3rd Mike Rushant (11) 34pts
Tuesday, Dec. 3, Green Valley – Stableford
Tuesday and it was back to Green Valley where it
was the turn of a high handicapper to step to the fore. Arthur Kimo had a
particularly good day, knocking in 38 points which was good enough to see
off the redoubtable Ed Brubaker and ‘Mr. Consistent’ himself, Mike Rushant.
Ted Senior.
1st Arthur Kimo (25) 38pts
2nd Ed Brubaker (14) 37pts
3rd Mike Rushant (11) 34pts
Thursday, Dec. 5, Greenwood - Stableford
On Thursday the TRGG set off for another favourite
course at Greenwood (A and B courses) and it was Mike Rushant who finished
king for the day on 38 points. Ed Brubaker again took second spot, with
Scotsman Ian Bell finishing third.
1st Mike Rushant (11) 38pts
2nd Ed Brubaker (14) 37pts
3rd Ian Bell (7) 35pts
Saturday, Dec. 7, Crystal Bay – Stableford
On Saturday it was Crystal Bay (C and A course)
playing host and it was our new father, Ted Senior, who ran up a real daddy
of a score, 40 points, which was far too good for the rest of the field.
John Baxter trailed in some way behind to take second and it was a Thai lady
Mint, new to golf but showing rapid improvement, who took third place.
1st Ted Senior (15) 40pts
2nd John Baxter (14) 35pts
3rd Mint (36) 33pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like to
play a round of golf with the TRGG, please phone Fergus Brennan on 086 056
7019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name to the
weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.
Ken Aihara takes the title
PSC golf from The Golf Club
Martin Zimmerman and Scott Taylor.
Steve Ellison
Monday, Dec. 2, Green Valley (white tees) – Monthly
Medal
1st Scott Taylor (28) 35pts
T2nd Martin Zimmerman (15) 34pts
T2nd John Emmerson (12) 34pts
T2nd Robbie Taylor (12) 34pts
Today was one of the windiest days we have seen in quite some time at
Green Valley and was a great test of golf on a course we are all very
familiar with. My, how things change once the wind picks up. Some
people, like Darren Clarke, play in these conditions all the time and
are masters at rough weather. We had no choice in the matter, so off we
went to our only regular venue.
It’s great to see someone win after pluggin’ away at it for ages, and
today was to be the day for Scott Taylor. Our Aussie buddy finally got
it all together for a great round of golf under very difficult
conditions.
Short game sharpshooter
Kenny Aihara.
Canadian transplant Martin was in a pack of three to round out the
leaderboard for today’s outing. Thanks for joining us guys!
Wednesday, Dec. 4, Silky Oaks (white tees) –
Stableford
1st Ken Aihara (5) 41pts
T2nd Bob Mulholland (8) 35pts
T2nd Mike Newbert (10) 35pts
It was good to get back to Silky Oaks once again, and we found the
course in very good condition as usual. We were happy to see the course
open after a 4 month closure and blessed by great weather the game was
afoot!
Kenny Aihara shot one of his best rounds in some time and his 41 points
blew away the field by 6 points! Great job Ken, good to see you back on
track.
Bob Mulholland and the Montauk Mauler Mike Newbert had a tie on 35 to
share 2nd place on the podium.
Thursday, Dec. 5, Kabinburi (white tees) – Stableford
T1st Mark Wood (10) 40pts
T1st Barry Wellinis (6) 40pts
2nd Ken Aihara (5) 37pts
Friday, Dec. 6, Kabinburi (white tees) – Stableford
1st Ken Aihara (5) 40pts
2nd Phil Smedley (10) 36pts
3rd Mark Wood (10) 35pts
We tried to visit Kabinburi in October, but had to cancel due to heavy
flooding. There are no problems with this course at all now; in fact we
found it to be in great shape! The fairways here are as lush as Siam Old
and the teething problems with the sand get better every trip.
Barry Wellinis with Phil Smedley and Mark Wood,
home on the range.
One thing we did notice was the road condition of the 304 had gotten
worse and there are stretches where going 50km was difficult as the
potholes from the floods were quite evident. Add another 10 minutes to
your trip for the comfort of your passengers, and thanks to Phil for
providing the guests with as smooth a ride as possible.
We had a few newbies on this trip and I love to get the reaction of
those playing a course for the first time. Kabinburi was well received
and we had some great scores to go along with the good times. It was a
2-day individual Stableford format, and the first day went to Mark Wood
and Barry Wellinis who both shot 40’s. More importantly, we all had a
great wine and cheese party at the poolside with only Ken and little
Ally brave enough to get wet!
The next day it was all Ken Aihara as the previous night’s swim and
sauna regimen proved to be the key and his healthy choice set him up for
a 40 point round and the winner of the match with a 2-day total of 77.
Thanks to all who joined us for another great week of golf in paradise.
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We try to schedule
summer “Sports Days”, so come join us for a seriously fun day out. Just

Fitzgerald bags the loot at Eastern Star
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, Dec. 2, Plutaluang – Stableford
There was a field of 37 out today with the cut in the three divisions coming
at 4-15, 16-21 and 21+ and yet again we were allocated the East and South
courses.
The telephone box boy returned the best score of the day, Dennis Scougal
winning division 2 with a fine 38 points. Howard Stanley came in second
three points behind and Walter Weber was third on 31.
Lindsay Phillips topped division 1 with 35 points and Horst Starchl took
second on 34, with the London taxi boy Mike Chatt placing third with 33
points.
Andy Oz claimed pole position in division 3 with 34 points ahead of Cliff
Elliott in second, one point behind, and Joe Kubon was smiling as he
finished third with just 30 points.
There were no ‘2’s in division 1 but Andy Oz birdied the 7th on the South to
take the rollover pot in division 2.
Near pins went to Frank Kelly, Pete Sumner (2), Cliff Elliott, Ray Gott,
Chris Slota and Walter Weber.
Friday, Dec. 6, Eastern Star - Stableford
With the numbers up once again, the cut was almost identical to Monday with
the field split at 7-13, 14-19 and 20+.
Playing off 12 now after a few months on the podium, our new monthly prize
of the Lone Ranger mask was won by Billy Fitzgerald, who topped division 1
with 41 points. Chris Voller came in a distant second and eight points
behind as he beat Bob Mulholand and Wilf Latham on count back.
Miss Pink, a.k.a. Miss Nut, playing off the white tees now off 23, won
division 3 with an even par 36 points ahead of Walter Weber in second on 35
and Chris Reed third with 32.
Darryl Blair, who lives on this course, won division 2 with 35 points while
second place went to Swiss man Volker Suhr on 34 and in third place was Don
Head with 33.
Bob Mulholand birdied the 3rd after an almost hole in one to record the only
‘2’ of the day while near pins were claimed by Don Head, Jerry McCarthy, Bob
Mulholand, Keith Woolley, Magne Gunnarson, Chris Reed and Walter Weber.

Saving the best til last
The Backyard Golf Society
The weekly Backyard Golf Society game at Emerald on Dec.
6 was played in ideal golfing conditions; the brisk wind keeping the
temperature down although it did prove to be tricky to judge on some holes.
Just as J.C. saved the best wine until last at the wedding feast, so Linda’s
Lovelace saved his best ever round with us to his last outing. 35 points
gave Mickey a 3 shot victory on his last bash before heading back for a
short rest in England’s balmy winter weather. Runner-up was The Diet Whiskey
Man on 32 and then 5 players on 31 points.
Near-pin today went to Irish John while the skins produced a good spread of
winners, with 4 to Jimmy ‘2 Stone’ and Golden Trowel’s Boyfriend (seems she
has just started her own concrete business and is keen to get back and look
after the old fella again?), 3 each to Lovelace and Foos yer Doos, 2 to
Irish John, 1 to Diet Whiskey and 1 rolled over to next week.
Foos yer Doos finally coughed up the rollover kitty he took for safe keeping
to NW Thailand 2 weeks ago. The worry is that he is now in possession of the
current kitty so one can only hope he actually turns up next week!

Rocky delivers knockout round at Emerald
PSC golf with iRovers Golf Society
Tuesday, Dec. 3, The Emerald -
Stableford
The Emerald course is currently playing well; the fairways are on the mend
and the greens are building a bit of pace again after all the recent bad
weather.
Today we welcomed a few players that haven’t been around for a while; Gerry
from Australia brought along Tash and Greg, both first timers and they told
me they had a great day. Jason from England was back again after a year away
working and for someone that doesn’t play at home, he played really well and
was smacking that driver about 270 yards on average, some much longer.
The overall winner today was Rocky Jenks who is starting to get his game
back after a few years off. His 83 Gross today off a 24 handicap, netted him
an amazing 48 points. Well played mate!
Thursday, Dec. 5, Green Valley - Stableford
Playing on the King’s Birthday holiday, as expected, the course
was very busy but we moved at a good pace all day. The course is in great
condition, fairways are lush and the greens were fast. I personally
struggled with the greens today, as did most of the players. In my group,
I’ve never seen so many duffed chips or three putts in a round before,
unfortunately many of those were mine!
We welcomed a couple of first time starters today; John from Manchester and
Paul from Philadelphia, both really nice guys. I enjoyed walking with Paul,
a 71 year old retired doctor and psychiatrist, not for analysing my warped
mind but chatting with Paul about his world travels, even golfing
experiences where he has caddied for Lee Trevino, Arnold Palmer and known
many of the top line golfers over the years.
Poor John today threw his back out after 14 holes and could barely walk.
Look after yourself mate and I hope to see you out here again soon.
I can’t really say who the winner was but I think Dave Gattenholf would have
taken the prize. He’s probably Pattaya’s worst chipper, followed closely by
me, but he can play quite well on occasions.

Pattaya Sports Club & Jesters support the Special Olympics
Some of the athletes raring to
go.
William Macey
Eunice Kennedy Shriver, an American lady, found that children and
young adults from the age of seven with intellectual disabilities, or those
with special needs, were being ignored and had nowhere to play or to kick a
ball on the sports field. So in the late fifties she started a summers camp
to entertain these children who were resident in her area. This was so
successful that in July 1968 the first Special Olympics took shape for 1,000
children. In Feb 1977 she started the Winter Special Olympics which included
skiing and skating amongst many other exercises.
The Special Olympics is so popular that the summer and winter events take
place bi-annually with 4.2 million athletes taking part in 180 different
countries and it is now the world’s biggest sporting event with more than
7,500 athletes.
The four regions of Thailand hold an annual event and the Eastern Region
held its seventh games at Pattaya school No. 7 recently. 270 children were
involved in athletics, bocce and football and, would you believe, cricket
was also being demonstrated as a possible event in the future. The technique
left a little to be desired but they had fun doing it. Some of the winners
from Thailand will be invited to take part in the next summer’s event which
will take place in 2015 in Los Angeles.
Pattaya Sports Club, Jesters and YWCA are major sponsors of this event which
was opened by Deputy Mayor Ronnakit Ekasing. The overriding factor in these
games is the commitment and determination of each individual to finish the
race, regardless of how far they fall behind the others in the race and the
smile on their faces when they cross the finishing line is a joy to behold.
In one particular event, a young athlete not more than 12 years old, was a
lap behind but still insisted on finishing the 2 lap race and was urged on,
every step of the way, by the passionate volunteers. If all the golfers in
Pattaya had this commitment, we would all be off single figures.
What a great two days!
A nervous wait on the starting blocks.
Medals being presented to the winners.
Smiles all round.
The aim is to finish at all costs.

McAdam fires magic round at Green Valley
The Billabong Bar Golf Society
Monday, Dec. 2, Eastern Star - Stableford
There was a welcome and goodbye today at Eastern Star as Dave and Liz Collier
joined us from England and Gary Hogg was about to leave us for Oz to go back to
work and Ralph Hymer on his way back home to England.
John O’Flynn and Orn Tinpranee.
Playing from the white markers we were off to an early start
with three groups, it was a bit windy and one golfer was heard to say, “I only
lost about 10 balls in this wind, glad they’re cheap ones.” Ralph started
playing here about six weeks ago off a 28 handicap and got down to 19, which was
what he played off today. Not bad at all, but today his score of 26 points
didn’t make the prizes.
Coming in fourth place today on a count back was Ted Gardner with 34 points,
just edging out Dave Collier. Third place went to Gary Hogg with 35 points and
in second was John Locke with a fine 38 point score. First place went to Owen
Walkley with 39 points and although this is not his favourite course, he handled
the wind better than most.
Wednesday, Dec. 4, Green Valley - Stableford
We got some terrible news just before we teed off today - a phone
call no one ever wants. Our chef, Cookie Wan as she was known by all at the
Billabong, had passed away this morning. It was much too early for her as she
was only 46 years old and leaves behind a little boy and girl. We will remember
you with fond memories Wan, and our thoughts are with your family.
The greens today here were like putting on a glass top table. I don’t think they
have been that fast ever before, but some of the groups out there seemed to have
no problems with them judging by the scores.
It was welcome today to the family of Robert Marsh, over from Germany for a
holiday and some golf.
The prize’s went down to fourth place, which was taken by Barry McIntosh with 37
points while in third place was Wayne Cotterell on 38. Second went to Peter Le
Noury with a fine 40 points but taking the line honours was Bruce McAdam with a
magic 42 points. Well done mate - what a round of golf!
There were five ‘2’s coming from Geert, Dennis Pelly, Neil Carter, John Anderson
and Bill Marsden.
Friday, Dec. 6, Pattavia Century - Stableford
What a pleasant surprise to play the former Century Chonburi again.
The last time we played here the facilities were dreadful and the course left a
lot to be desired.
With a 9 am start we got off a little early but it was a slow day out of nearly
five hours, which doesn’t make for good golf. The course however was in
wonderful condition and the staff were very friendly and attentive. When the new
club house gets built it will be better again as you will be able to have a hot
shower.
The scores today were ordinary to say the least it took a little lady to show
the way and the ladies didn’t get too much of a head start, in that the ladies
tee’s were close to the men’s in most cases. It plays from the white tee’s a
distance of just over 6,600 yards and it is a good challenge with greens like
lightening if you get above the hole.
In fifth place today was Owen Walkley with 30 points, just edged out of fourth
by Wayne Cotterell on a count back. Third place went to Mick Inge with 31 points
and second to John O’Flynn with a fine 34 off his zero handicap. But first spot,
as stated, went to Jittina Tinpranee with a great 35 points.
The rest of the field, myself included, were down in the low 20s but we will be
back for another go.
There were five ‘2’s from Jeff North, Peter Nixon, Waldo, and Nut had two and
donated her prize to our late chef, Cookie Wan. Thank you on behalf on her
family.
Note: If you are looking for a game of golf, just call Bob on 082 204 3411 or
call into the bar. We are just off Siam Country Club Road looking straight down
Lake Mabprachan.
Thailand dominates 2013 King’s Cup Jet-Ski Grand Prix
Masao Noguchi of Japan performs a spectacular
somersault during the Pro Freestyle competition at the 2013 King’s Cup Jet-Ski
World Cup Grand Prix held at Jomtien Beach from Dec. 4-8. Thailand had a
successful week, winning 4 out of the 5 main categories. Turn to page 56 for a
full report.
Thai racers once again reigned supreme on home water,
scooping 4 out of the 5 top awards at the Jet Ski King’s Cup-World Cup Grand
Prix 2013 held at Jomtien Beach from 4-8 December.
Over 30 international teams containing the highest ranking jet-ski riders in the
world descended on Pattaya last week to do battle for some of the biggest cash
prizes in the sport and the honor of receiving the prestigious King’s Cup
trophies.
In perfect weather conditions, a large crowd of locals and tourists gathered
shoreside at Jomtien beach Sunday to witness the final round of races, with the
winners of all the main Pro categories still to be decided.
Despite Thailand’s overwhelming success on the day, the first rider to lay claim
to a King’s Cup trophy, and a 1 million baht prize, was South Africa’s Dustin
Motzouris in the Pro Standing category. Motzouris finished first in all three
previous motos (races) and played it cool in the final round to place 6th and
raise his total points score up to 216. Hideyuki Kurahashi from Team Belgium
took second overall, with Austria’s Kevin Reiterer in third.
“I’m just so thrilled to be here and my ski was running so smooth over the first
three races it gave me a comfortable lead. I’ve raced all over the world and
this event in Thailand ranks right up there as the very best,” said a delighted
Motzouris later.
The next two titles to be decided were divided between Thailand’s seemingly
unbeatable Settura brothers; Supak, the World’s No.2, winning the Pro Sport
title and his sibling Theera, the World’s No.1, winning the Pro Runabout 800.
The most exciting race of the day came in the toughest category – the Pro
Runabout 1600. Thailand’s Chokutit Molee went into the final moto leading the
standings and set off as if he meant to finish the job in style, opening up a
sizeable gap on his rivals during the opening laps.
However, with the chasing pack slowly closing on him, Molee took a tumble from
his ski on the back straight with just a couple of laps to go. Willed on by the
local support, the Thai racer remounted and managed to recover enough lost
ground to finish in 5th place and take the overall title by the narrowest of
margins from race winner James Bushell of Britain. A big cheer came up from the
crowd when the scores were announced and Molee showed his delight by
enthusiastically waving a large Thai flag as he climbed the podium steps.
The Kingdom’s fourth victory on an exciting final day came with a surprise win
for Songwut Lappasappaisan in the Pro Freestyle event. Songwut produced a series
of amazing acrobatic loops on his ski to delight the crowd of spectators and it
was enough to see off the challenge of his main rivals from Japan, Mazao Ueki
and Naoya Hamanaka.

Santa Scramble golf tourney brings
Christmas cheer to Baan Jing Jai
Division 2 winners: Mike Hill, Don
Everett, John Wood and Terry Hodgkiss.
Due to the busy holiday golf schedule, this year’s Baan Jing
Jai Santa Scramble was held even earlier than usual, and on a Wednesday, being
organised on the 4th of December, as the festive season has become totally
overcrowded with so many other competitions.
This glut of competitions also had an effect on the total entries, with this
year seeing the numbers reduced compared to the last two years and although this
affected the golfing activity income and a much reduced input from the 50/50
draw, with donations being added to at the end of proceedings the target sum of
200,000 baht was reached once again.
This year the plan was again to raise enough money to buy each of the 75 or so
children, who are provided for by the home, a Christmas present of their dreams
with any excess money being directed towards the funds for the New Home for 100
plus children. This is in the process of being built on the outskirts of the
city on land that has been specifically purchased for that purpose.
The projected cost of the new home was originally 18.5 million baht, which due
to inflation has moved slightly upwards. With nearly 13.5 million having already
been raised, work has already started on the project with the contract for the
building recently signed and it is now due for completion during 2014.
Division 1 runners-up: David Lehane, Larry Ang, Richard
Bannister and Brian Talbot.
The home cares for orphaned and abandoned children between
the ages of 1 year and 17 years and has received the official status of a
charitable trust under the title of The Baan Jing Jai Foundation. This status
does not mean that it will receive any monies from either central or local
government and will still therefore have to rely on solely on donations from
commercial and private individuals and fund raising activities such as this
day’s event, which are vital to its ongoing survival.
Last year’s wonderful sum of 200,000 baht was again matched with the last minute
additions of a couple of final donations from The Haven and the now almost world
famous anonymous donor to take the total from 170,000 to the final total made up
as follows;
Whilst not wishing to exclude nor mention any particular individual, many whom
gave very generously either through the 50/50 draw or directly into the fund, it
is right to give credit to those commercial sponsors who helped to make this
such a successful day. These were: The Eastern Star Country Club and Resort, The
Pattaya Mail, Pattaya Sports Supply, The Haven Hotel, head donation collector
Jim Farmer, Glyn Evans for organising registration together with Len Jones,
Russell Exley and Joe McArdle the golf organisers that provided the entries.
Those that made the effort to support the day’s very worthy cause were rewarded
with a great day’s golfing enjoyment in the knowledge that they had all helped
towards making it once again a very happy Christmas for a lot of deserving
children.
After the golfing activities, the contestants returned to The Haven where the
usual sumptuous spread had been laid on and continued until all were totally
filled or exhausted.
Russell Exley presented the prizes as Stephen Beard emceed the prize
presentations and thanked all who had helped to make the day such a great
success from the prize donors, 50/50 sellers, donation collectors, buyers,
donors and golf organizers and the staff of the Haven for keeping everyone
topped up with food and drink in the evening.
There was also a moment of reflection in memory of Roy Thornton who, in
conjunction with The Haven five years earlier, had been instrumental in starting
the Santa Scramble on behalf of the Baan Jing Jai and he would have again been
extremely happy to have seen the day’s total collected for the New Home.
The day’s golf competition was also a great success as the course was found to
be in top condition, with greens that were better than had been seen for a long
while. The starter also did an excellent job after Glyn Evans had seen everyone
checked in and paid and the field got away on time, with all completing their
leisurely rounds in around four and a half hours full of pure fun and enjoyment.
With the course being a lot longer and tougher than in previous years, the
scoring could not match any of the preceding four years with the best of the day
being the first division top three along with the fourth team, all at four under
gross with only the handicaps to separate them all.
The second division first and second just got under par at 71 and although the
third placed team were in with a gross 70, their lower handicap cost them a
higher placement on the final podium.
The first division required a count back to settle the winners with Wilf, Paul,
Ian and Daryl coming out on top with a better 29.1 to 30.1, leaving David,
Larry, Richard and Brian in second spot and Robert, Tony, Frank and John taking
third just point seven behind them.
The second division was not quite as close with two of last year’s winners Mike
and John, plus Terry in for this year, but sadly minus Rodney Hayes who passed
way during the year, once again prevailing, with Chris, Marc, Pat and Phil a
close second and Hal Allen, Russell and Markku taking third place.
Division 1
1st Wilf Latham, Paul Butler, Ian Walsh, Daryl Blair (7.8) net 60.2
2nd David Lehane, Larry Ang, Richard Bannister, Brian Talbot (7.8) net 60.2
3rd Robert Hanson, Tony Pike, Frank McGowan, John Rushe (7.1) net 60.9
Division 2
1st Mike Hill, Don Everett, John Wood, Terry Hodgkiss (11.0) net 60.0
2nd Chris Walsh, Marc Jensen, Pat Murphy, Phil McClure (10.3) net 60.7
3rd Hal Hart, Allen Raaen, Russell Gilroy, Markku Tynell (8.5) net 61.5
Following the final prize presentations, all that was left at the end of the
night was to draw the winning tickets for the 50/50 draw, which was left to Jim
Farmer who pulled them out as follows; 1st Kuk the Prawn Seller, 2nd the Golden
Crab staff, 3rd ten of the Haven staff.
