Coetzee captures monthly medal
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

(From left) Greg from Devere,
Friday’s monthly medal sponsor, with Andre Coetzee (winner) and PSC Golf
Chairman Joe Mooneyham.
Monday, August 19, Burapha - Stableford
25 Outbackers played Burapha C & D in perfect weather and as usual we were
away early with all groups finished in under four hours. This course is in
great condition on the fairways but if you stray into the rough you will pay
the penalty.
Div A was won by John Cunningham with 40pts from Hua Hin favourite Steve
Mann on 38; with Geoff Stimpson and Bob Finley a long way back on 32 & 31
respectively.
Pete Stonebridge, off a handicap of 17, had a brilliant one over on the back
nine to win Div B with the day’s top score, a fantastic 43pts – 5 clear of
Bob Lindborg (38) with John Stafford (37) and Ivan Plunkett (36) filling the
minor podium places.
There were two ‘2s on the 5th from John Cunningham & Geoff Stimpson and
three on the 8th from Steve Poznanski, Ivan Plunkett and another from Geoff
Stimpson again.
Div A (0-16)
1st John Cunningham (6) 40pts
2nd Stephen Mann (14) 38pts
3rd Geoff Stimpson (7) 32pts
4th Bob Finley (14) 31pts
Div B (17+)
1st Pete Stonebridge (17) 43pts
2nd Bob Lindborg (23) 38pts
3rd John Stafford (17) 37pts
4th Ivan Plunkett (25) 36pts
Tuesday, August 20, Phoenix - Stableford
We had 7 Outbackers today and for a change the course was very quiet so
we managed to get the first group away 50 minutes early, again playing the
Mountain & Lake nines. Ocean is still closed due to maintenance of the
fairways, i.e. removing the cow grass from the fairways and replanting new
grass around the fringes of the greens.
A couple of confessions have to be made public – I, Suzi Lawton had an
amazing air shot on the 18th fairway and burst out laughing, so much for
trying to make the green, whilst John boy (my other half Lawton) was
chipping in for a birdie and double hit his ball. So if you are reading this
and are going to Hua Hin then we are going down guys regarding the form and
will no doubt be going very cheaply in the auction.
A good win for Andy Makara with 35pts, another Hua Hin hopeful and welcome
back Joe Spinley and also to Steve Kerr who joined us today and we hope we
see you more often since the house move.
1st Andy Makara (25) 35pts
2nd John Lawton (19) 32pts
Wednesday, August 21, Siam Plantation - Stableford
Siam Plantation today off the white tees playing the Tapioca and
Pineapple nines. The course is in great condition and all the fairways have
been scarified but no preferred lies were necessary. The course has dried
out and for the first time in a number of months there were no plugged balls
on fairways or in front of the greens and the ball actually got some run,
not only on the fairways but also on the approaches to the greens. The
greens were still fantastic to putt on and very true.
Only 5 players as a number were at Burapha and others were starting early in
Hua Hin but nevertheless the first nine holes were extremely competitive
with all players shooting there handicap on the Tapioca Course - Tony
Pattison leading with 22 points from Stephen Mann on 20 points. However on
the back, only Stephen Mann and Tony Pattisson managed to continue their
good golf with Stephen getting the better of Tony over the closing holes to
grab the win with 41pts; reconfirming his likelihood of being the firm Hua
Hin favourite, particularly off a 14 handicap!
There were no ‘2’s.
1st Stephen Mann (14) 41pts
2nd Tony Pattison (17) 40pts
Friday, August 23, Green Valley – Stableford
An earlier than usual monthly medal, sponsored by Greg Hirst of
DeVere Financial Group, for the 34 players today, as Sunday many were
departing for Hua Hin for the third Syd LeBron Memorial Putter.
The course here is in fine condition although the greens are about 8.6 on
the stimp meter so a little slow for most of us. They have now cleared away
all the trees on the right hand side of hole 6 running parallel to the
fairway and we have been led to believe that the driving range will be up
and running again by October.
The scoring was generally to a very high standard with seven players playing
to handicap or better as Andre Coetzee found himself not only the winner of
the trophy with a net 70 off a handicap of 6 but also with the low gross
medal with 70. Andre went out in 37 with four bogeys and three birdies only
to come back in 39. He was level for the first five holes but unfortunately
had a triple bogey 7, on the 15th.
Paul Bourke, Bob Lindborg and John Stafford all shared a net 71 and finished
in that order after a count back, with a further three players all finishing
on a net 72; namely Jim Brackett, Joe Mooneyham and John Cunningham.
Jim Brackett was having his last game with us as he heads back to the US so
have a good trip Jim (many thanks for the drink) and welcome back to David
Trantham-Fryer and his two mates, Dennis & Colin, who are both new to the
Outback with all three them joining us in Hua Hin.
Just as a matter of interest, the result would have had a completely
different look about it had it been a stableford competition. Andy Makara,
who actually finished in 17th place with a net 75 playing off 25, would have
won with 39pts! So just where did Andy screw up – he had a horrid 12 on the
16th.
There were five ‘2’s from Andre Coetzee & Ed Turner (4th), Jim Brackett &
Geoff Stimpson (12th) and Stephen Mann (16th).
1st Andre Coetzee (6) net 70
2nd Paul Bourke (8) net 71
3rd Bob Lindborg (23) net 71
4th John Stafford (17) net 71
5th Jim Brackett (6) net 72
6th Joe Mooneyham (14) net 72
7th John Cunningham (6) net 72

Takeshi sails home at Riverside
PSC golf from the Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Monday, August 19, Treasure Hill –
Stableford
We arrived at Treasure Hill to find the car park almost empty, and we
were able to tee off without delay, in bright and breezy conditions. The
course was generally in good shape and has recovered well from the
recent renovations, although some work is still ongoing on the back
nine.

Barry Murnin.
An interesting new feature of the course at present
is that the short par four 15th hole has now become an island green, the
apron areas having been completely dug up so that the green is now
surrounded by a sea of sand! Any ball rolling off the green has a six
inch drop into the sand, and two rubber drop mats have been installed,
which provide the unlucky golfer with a truly testing chip from either
side of the green.
Colin Greig managed to card a birdie on this aforementioned hole, whilst
most other players struggled, and this was instrumental in giving Colin
the points he needed to take first place on a count back ahead of John
Graham. Terry Hamilton followed up his win on Friday, finishing a single
point behind the leaders, to claim third place.
1st Colin Greig (9) 35pts
2nd John Graham (9) 35pts
3rd Terry Hamilton (20) 34pts
Near Pins: Barry Murnin, Geoff Parker and Colin Greig.
Wednesday, August 21, Bangpakong Riverside -
Stableford
Only ten golfers turned out today for the longer trip to
Bangprakong, and two of those almost got lost on the way (they shall
remain nameless but a “young” man was navigating), eventually teeing off
almost an hour after the rest of us.
The course was in much improved condition from our previous visit six
weeks ago, but it will still be quite some time before the damaged areas
are fully recovered. The greens today were in good condition but running
much slower than normal, and everyone seemed to be struggling to get the
ball to the hole, even on downhill putts.
Several thunder storms skirted around the course during the round but we
remained dry throughout, and the temperature was pleasant.
Takeshi Hakozaki produced the best score of the day to take first place,
two points ahead of Geoff Parker, with Tony Robbins a further two points
behind in third place.
1st Takeshi Hakozaki (12) 39pts
2nd Geoff Parker (14) 37pts
3rd Tony Robbins (14) 35pts
Near Pins: Barry Murnin, Takeshi, and Tony Robbins.
Friday, August 23, Mt. Shadow – Stableford
Another bright, sunny day as we arrived at Mountain Shadow to
find the course almost deserted, and the first group teed off ahead of
schedule with an empty course ahead of them.
The outward nine was completed in well under two hours, but then groups
of Thai golfers started appearing ahead of us on the 13th and 15th
tees!, why the management allows them to do this when the course is
quiet is anybody’s guess, but it’s a sure recipe to upset farangs.
However, our four groups still managed to complete the round in four
hours, so the day wasn’t spoilt too much.
Many of the tees were in forward positions today, so perhaps it wasn’t
surprising that the scores were somewhat better than normal, on what is
always a demanding course. Barry Murnin was playing his final game
before returning to the States for a few months, and he thought he’d
done enough when he returned to the clubhouse with 38 points. However,
you can never write off the in-form Mashi Kaneta who was playing in the
final group, and he came in with a great score of 40 points to secure
first place. Mike Johns also came home with 38 points but lost out on
the count back to Barry.
Following the presentation back at The Ranch we said our goodbyes to
Barry as the beer flowed freely into the evening.
1st Mashi Kaneta (14) 40pts
2nd Barry Murnin (15) 38pts
3rd Mike Johns (19) 38pts
Near Pins: Barry Murnin, Gerry Cooney, Raleigh Gosney and John
Graham.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play
out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station,
and almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on
Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a
friendly but competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new
players are always welcome. Contact “Buff” on 086 046 5091 or 080 605
5663 for all enquiries. You can find all the news, schedules and results

West makes short work of Greenwood
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Tuesday flight winners - Mark
West & George Bayley
Derek Brook
Tuesday, August 20, Greenwood – Stableford
I personally had not been here for a few months
so I was interested to see how it was getting on, seeing as many of the
other courses are now showing signs of wear and some are recovering well.
It is a fair drive to this course, but then I was not driving so who cares!
I was even able to relax, as well as one who goes with Mashi can and the
journey passed in a flash, or maybe that was the flash of fear. Joking apart
I did ask if Mashi was getting old as he made none of his normal short cut
detours. We still had the way back to go mind, but I have a way to fix that,
I sleep.
On arrival it was noticeable that the car park was fairly empty and we were
soon out to the first tee where we found the test for the day was to be the
A&C Nines.
Onto the course and I have to say I thought it was in fine condition. The
grass on the fairways was a bit long but hit the fairway and you usually got
a good lie. I say usually because I did manage to find a couple of divots
and not many fairways, but such is golf.

Friday’s top two - Bob Watson
& Barry Elphick.
The greens were a good test and the rough
was as rough should be - difficult to get out of. All in all a fair test and
we did not have to use ‘lift, clean and place’ rule as the ball behaved with
the grass and little mud was apparent. We did however have a strong wind.
In the A Flight the winner was Mark West with 41 points ahead of a count
back between a couple of our ‘learner golfers’, namely Watson and Scott on
36 points, that saw Bob in second and Max in third.
In the B Flight the winner was George Bayley with 36 points ahead of Barry
Elphick in second with 34 points and Charlie Sykes in third with 33 on count
back over Barry Oates.
Near Pins: Dave Arrowsmith, George Bayley
Friday, August 23, Treasure Hill – Stableford
For the second time in the week the ‘boys’ went
up the 331, but not quite as far as Tuesday. It’s usually a good day out
here but on this day the course was not in the best of condition as 5 holes
were undergoing major renovation work. Around the greens there were large
areas of GUR and it was not a pretty sight to a golfer.
The rest of the course was in reasonable condition and the greens were in
their normal shape, but this was definitely a day to stop in bed and give
the golf a miss. Suffice to say the ‘boys’ were not as happy as they had
been at Greenwood on Tuesday, and I am given to understand that there will
be more fairways under repair when these recover.
Back at Bert’s it was soon time for the results. The winner was that up and
coming golfer Bob Watson with 34 points. In second place was Barry Elphick
with 32 points and in third was Anders Pederson, also with 32 but losing the
count back. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Barry Elphick, George Bayley, Anders Pederson, Barry Oats.

‘K’ hits the top
at Navy
PSC golf from Siam Country Resort

A smiling winner, Kurt Erik
Persson “K” (right) with Mham.
Tuesday, August 20, Plutaluang -
Stableford
Tuesday was a visit to Plutaluang, with the East & South combination our
allotted test of the day. Our octogenarian Kurt Erik Persson (24), enjoying
his golf from the silver tees these days, led the way home, just edging
Graham Briggs (25) on count back 20/18 after both signed for 36 points.
The course was in good condition, with the greens running true, although a
tad on the slow side compared to the majority of other local courses.
Near pins went Joel, Owen & Jeff with 2.
Thursday, August 22, Greenwood - Stableford
Thursday saw a small field (after a few no shows)
travel to Greenwood, with the C & A Nines to be our day’s test. These 2 are
the best combination, in my opinion, with some of the testing par 4s the
equal of any in the area. The greens were running smoothly and the pace was
a bit up from Tuesday’s venue. \
Willem Lasonder (21), fresh from a great score of 44 points on an away trip,
maintained some of his form to lead the way with 36 points, ahead of Jeff
Wylie (5) who struggled to 34 points for the second time this week.
Note: Siam Country Resort, Restaurant & Bar is located just off Siam Country
Club Rd, after going under the arch past the 7/11, turn right after 50
metres, with the venue on the left another 200 metres along. Golf from here
is generally played on Tuesday & Thursday, with the resort hosting prompt
presentations on both days.
As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including Ladies & Seniors
who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling
or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Millar grinds out a win
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society visited Green Valley
on Monday, 19th August to play a stableford event and found the course as good
as it has ever been with excellent fairways and greens which possessed some pace
and consistency. With a cooling fresh breeze in attendance the round was played
in comfortable conditions.
Strange it was then that scores did not reflect the conditions with Masashi
Iizumi posting 35 points and Evan Millar taking the win with 36 points. There
were no birdie ‘2’s once again.
The Booby Bevy went to the returning Peter Allen for his low score and the golf
week at Rabbi’s had begun in quiet and unspectacular style.
Many happy returns
Wednesday, 21st August saw the annual golf extravaganza known as the Boss’s
Birthday Bash with the Pattaya Golf Society, which this year saw Mr Len and his
mates gather at Siam CC to play a stableford competition on the course which,
for various reasons, has been largely ignored for the past few years. Always a
favourite it was a pleasure to tread the tight, rich fairways again and test the
touch and nerve on the challenging greens.
It proved to be a real test for the golfers, most of whom have never played
there in the past. Being the home of the annual Honda LPGA event it was probably
appropriate that the only lady in the field, K. Wan Meeraka, found herself in
third place with a fine 35 points. One point ahead in second was Aussie Brian
Shaw whose level par round of 36 points was just reward for his accurate long
game. The winner was Robbie Taylor who in the words of one of his group, played
his best golf in a long, long while, putting together a clinical round which
included a birdie ‘2’ on the tough sixteenth. Falling away towards the end he
still returned 38 points.
The return to Siam CC had been a happy one and the presentation later at the
Elephant Bar in Soi Buakhao saw the returning Garry Hookey receive his customary
Booby Bevy whilst Rabbi and K. Peung outdid themselves with their hospitality,
birthday cake included. It certainly made the golf geezer happy. Here’s to the
next one!
Taylor’s stitches
up again
An excellent week for the Pattaya Golf Society ended on Friday, 23rd August with
a visit to Crystal Bay to play a stableford event on the A and B nines. As usual
the course was in top order and with medium paced greens there was most of what
every golfer wanted somewhere in the day to ensure a pleasant round.
Again, as usual, scores were good and in third place with 37 points was Japanese
golfer Takeshi Hakozaki whose game was straight and accurate on the course at
which he is a member. In second place was Wichai Tananusorn, finding his form
again after “resting” his new Taylormade driver in favour of his trusty failsafe
club and the result was the best gross of the day, 77, which gave him 39 points.
The winner, doubling up after Wednesday at Siam, was Robbie Taylor and he racked
up his third forty point round in four months with a very fine 40 points. He
also shared the ‘2’s pot with Garry Hookey after a brace of birdies on the
fifteenth.
Only two golfers failed to cross the thirty point threshold and the lowest of
these, Masashi Iizumi was rewarded with the Booby Bevy. Rabbi’s free beer for
the non-winners went to Murray Edwards and a thoroughly enjoyable week’s golf
concluded satisfactorily with a few cool beers back in Soi Buakhao.

Chris Setchell dominates
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, August 19, Eastern Star -
Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Bruce Hilde (16) 30pts
2nd Chris Setchell (15) 30pts
3rd Phil Groves (7) 30pts
4th Trevor Schirmer (13) 28pts
The Robert Trent Jones design at Banchang is never the easiest to play, and
when the wind blows hard and the fairways are wet, the 6,500 + yard course
plays nearer to 7,000.

Chris Setchell.
With the wind gusting to between a two and
three club strength, club selection was almost impossible to get right and
the resultant CSS of the day at 75 was a fair reflection of the difficulty
of the day’s competition and underscored the value of a non-counting event
for handicap adjustment when the conditions make the par just too hard to
attain. If the day’s scores were to be taken over say a ten round stretch,
handicaps without the non-counting aspect would be increasing by between 5
and 10 dependant on the base handicap at the start.
The most surprised man of the day was the winner, Bruce Hilde, as his
experiences of the local courses were previously not from this time of the
year when weather conditions can make a mockery of a 72 par and a standard
thirty six points to be in the frame. Bruce needed to win a count back over
the week’s top performer, Chris Setchell, which he achieved in some style,
as after tying the front nine at 18 apiece, he then took the best of the
last six with an astonishing 17 points (incl. 12 from the last 4 holes), to
Chris’s more normal 13.

Bruce Hilde.
Chris Setchell’s quiet start to the round
therefore left him in second place as Phil Groves, with the same points
total only scrapped together 13 on the inward half after he had started
promisingly.
Trevor Schirmer was another two shots back in fourth with several other
hopefuls wallowing behind him.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Trevor Schirmer swept the first
division pool clean with the only one in the first division.
Prior to the presentations there were welcome backs for Peter Newham and
Murray Frost from Oz.
Wednesday, August 21, Greenwood A & C - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Ian Tanner (20) 38pts
2nd Murray Frost (36) 36pts
3rd Shuichi Kodaka (17) 36pts
4th Chris Setchell (15) 35pts
5th Don Everett (19) 33pts
After the rigours of the previous outing the group were hoping for better
results as the wet weather eased off and the winds abated and with an
overcast sky the conditions were about as near perfect as can be expected
during August. The A and C courses, being in tip top condition, met all
expectations as the scores plummeted and the points totals spiraled upwards.

Ian Tanner.
Ian Tanner won his first competition with
the Soi 13 group with a solid performance that got better and better as it
progressed. He took two 4-pointers on the inward half after ending the
outward nine without a blob on the card and it easily became his best round
in Thailand.
Murray Frost also had an outstanding round even though it was only a level
par one, it being by far the best he had returned during many visits and
attempts and there were some mumblings and questions from among those that
know from down under as to whether he was on the Essendon Programme or not.
He needed to win a count back however to take second place, which he did
with a better 21 to 16 on the C course as Shuichi Kodaka in third slipped
backwards from a fine start.
Chris Setchell took his second podium placing of the week with fourth place
just a shot behind them, with Don Everett closing out the list in fifth
spot.
In marked contrast to Monday, the CSS for the day went down by a stroke to
71.
There were no 2’s in the first division but Ian Tanner made it an extra big
day with the lone one in the second division that cleaned out a multi, multi
roll over.
Friday, August 23, Pattana B &
C (yellow tees) - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Chris Setchell (15) 39pts
2nd Peter Newham (19) 35pts
3rd Phil Groves (7) 33pts
4th Murray Frost (36) 33pts
5th Trevor Schirmer (13) 32pts
It is always a pleasure to visit what must surely be the most opulent
overall of all of the golf courses in the region, from its expansive
reception area through the huge and extremely well appointed changing and
showering facilities, to its top class dining rooms which compliment the
extensive menu.
But the main interest of the day is always on the course, which was, as
always, well prepared and in top notch condition and generally the scoring
was good, although the length was possibly a bit too long for most of the
field even at just over 6,300 yards. There was little run afforded on the
fairways today and a stiff breeze got up on the back nine where the tees had
been set more or less on the usual white positions.
Chris Setchell saved his best for his last round of this trip with a three
under handicap return that was good enough by four to give him his second
win during this holiday in Pattaya, as a steady opening one over handicap
was ratcheted up to four under on the back nine and a comprehensive win.
Peter Newham at last got the better of travelling companion Murray Frost as
he claimed second place with a steady one over return that owed much to the
front nine, before the previous nights exertions presented their account for
settlement.
Phil Groves won a count back over Murray Frost for third spot with a better
18 to 15 as Murray also succumbed to “back nine exhaustion”.
Trevor Schirmer was once again found to be in attendance but not close
enough.
Once again there were no 2’s in the first division but Peter Koha proved the
adage regarding blind squirrels as he knocked one in to clean out the second
division, unfortunately one day too late for a share of the bonanza
previously on offer.
Back at The Haven there were welcome backs for the two defectors returning
from the far north - Hal Hart and Vincent Gras - together with one for
Trevor Schirmer, back from his one day’s annual leave to continue with his
quest to have the longest drive every day.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile
082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach
Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do
not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A schedule
of courses to be played can be found on our web site at
www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Summer Bowls Leagues decided
Last week saw the conclusion of the summer
leagues with 16 different bowlers taking home some Coco Club etched
glassware. The Sunday out of the hat pairs, where anyone may be drawn with
the top 4 lady bowlers in Thailand, worked out to form with the ladies
taking 4 of the top 5 places. So it was Alex, Sue, Ken and Pukky supporting
the runner up Lek, with Thanom taking the top spot.
The Wednesday pairs went down to the wire with Bank and Margaret letting
Dave and Ian snatch the title on the last week. Dan and Mook - Mook only
started bowls 6 months ago – took third place.
The Friday triples saw a fight for third place and Lek, Pukky and yours
truly just edged it from Dave, Kelvin and Sue. Ian, Thanom and Harvey came
in runners up to the very solid league performance from Nok, On and Dan who
took first place.
The new leagues start this week and new players always welcome - Coco Club
is well sign posted near Phoenix Golf Club.

Buckingham in form at the Valley
PSC golf from The Growling Swan

Graham Buckingham.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, August 19, Pleasant Valley – Stableford
We had 16 golfers on the starting sheet for the game at Pleasant
Valley and we assembled at The Growling Swan on a sunny Pattaya Monday
morning in readiness for the journey to the course.
It was a pleasure to welcome back good
friend Dave Neal from Birmingham in the UK, Charles Cunningham from
Pattaya and Wayne Harrison, Andy Ballantyne & Gary Hales from Darwin in
the Northern Territory of Australia.
We managed to get away from the GS a couple of minutes early at 8.28 am
and proceeded to the course heading north up No. 7 and arrived 42
minutes later. It was fairly quiet and we were asked to tee off on
number 10 which we did and our first of 4 fourballs got away at 9.45 am,
15 minutes ahead of our scheduled tee time.

Nolan Wise & Gerd Riedler.
The weather was terrific with a
cooling breeze which did give some relief as it was rather hot and
sticky and the golf course was in fairly good shape although parts of
the rough were in need of some attention. When one of my playing
partners complained about the rough being “rough” I advised him to
perhaps keep his balls on the fairway which he attempted to do from
thereon in.
We played at a fairly good pace with no hold ups ahead and completed the
round in four hours and fifteen minutes which was quite good allowing
for having to look for golf balls a couple of times. It was another very
good day with excellent company.
We had just the 1 Grade due to the smaller field with 5 places and there
were also rewards for nearest the pins on the four par threes and
longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
It was time for a return to form for Graham “Grunter” Buckingham who won
the day with a very good 41 points and Mark “Westy” West was second on
40 points. With 2 players on 38 points a count back was needed and it
was Tiziano Dal Pastro (20 point back nine) who came third from Mike
Allidi (19 point back nine) in fourth spot. With 3 players on 36 points
another count back was required and your writer, Peter “Blacky”
Blackburn (18 point back nine) finished fifth from John Davis (17 point
back nine) and Mike “Hunter” Gosden (15 point back nine).
1st Graham Buckingham (24) 41pts
2nd Mark West (16) 40pts
3rd Tiziano Dal Pastro (24) 38pts
4th Mike Allidi (2) 38pts
5th Peter Blackburn (11) 36pts
Near Pins: 5th – Mike Allidi, 8th – Ebrahim, 13th – Tiziano Dal
Pastro, 17th – Mike Allidi
Long Putts: 9th – John Davis, 18th – Peter Blackburn
The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst
score on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won
by Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei and as he had to depart before
presentations we will catch up with him at the next event.
Thursday, August 22, Burapha C & D – Stableford
After a “no show” and a late withdrawal due to
sickness our final number was 18 and we assembled at The Growling Swan
in readiness for the short journey to the classy Burapha Golf Course.
We welcomed Dave Neal’s partner Tienthong Charoenrung from Laem Chabang,
Max Hofer from Australia and good friend Walter Baechli, recently
returned from cycling in Spain and hiking in Switzerland. It was sadly
time to say farewell to Tiziano Dal Pastro who will very shortly be
returning to Italy.
Departing the GS 2 minutes early at 8.28 am we were at the course in the
blink of an eye and the weather was fine although overcast with a threat
of rain in the air. After taking our time in preparation at this busy
course we eventually managed to tee off on C1 15 minutes ahead of
schedule at 9.45 am with traffic ahead of us but not holding us up.
The golf course was fantastic as usual with pristine fairways, well
raked bunkers and super slick and very well maintained greens where
being below the hole on some of the sloping ones was a must. There were
a couple of drops of rain during the round but that was all and the
weather stayed quite cool throughout as we raced around the course in
the excellent time of three hours & thirty five minutes. It was an
extremely enjoyable round of golf on this lovely course and the company
was once again first class.
We had just the 1 Grade due to the smaller field with 6 places and there
were also rewards for nearest the pins on the four par threes and
longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
In first place on the day was Gerd Riedler with a fine 37 points, 2
points ahead of last start winner Graham “Grunter” Buckingham in second
spot. Ken Hole’s 34 points got him third place and with 6 golfers on 32
points a count back was needed to determine fourth, fifth and sixth
spots. Max Hofer (20 point back nine) grabbed fourth with Tom McMahon
(18 point back nine) fifth & yours truly, Peter “Blacky” Blackburn (17
point back nine) rounded off the podium in sixth place.
The unlucky golfers were Mike “Hunter” Gosden (16 point back nine),
Tiziano Dal Pastro (16 point back nine) and Mark “Westy” West (14 point
back nine).
1st Gerd Reidler (7) 37pts
2nd Graham Buckingham (24) 35pts
3rd Ken Hole (16) 34pts
4th Max Hofer (17) 32pts
5th Tom McMahon (18) 32pts
6th Peter Blackburn (11) 32pts
Near Pins: C5 – Brad Todd, C8 – Paul Hack, D2 – Gerd Riedler, D8
– Ken Hole
Long Putts: C9 – Paul Moloney, D9 – Ken Hole
The Growling Swan NAGA Award was easily won by good sport Nolan Wise who
accepted the cap honourably and wore it with distinction for a
considerable time. Toddy then kindly paraded Deefa the Dog and of course
collected many donations for the needy in Pattaya from our generous
Growling Swan golfers. It was then back to The Growling Swan for some
well deserved beers and a few hours there topped off another really good
day.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low & high
handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play
Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker
Bar) in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at 8.30 am.
For bookings or more information please contact Peter on 0806 351 386 or
email to
[email protected].
We also play bowls out of the Growling Swan every Wednesday and Sunday.
Sunday is Lawn Bowls and Wednesday is Indoor Bowls. All are welcome and
for anyone that is interested the transport leaves The Growling Swan at
10.00am on each of those mornings. For more information please contact
Paul Rennison on 0843 454 005.

The Thunder from Down Under
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society

Colin Davis (left) with
Sunday’s winners Jean LaRoche and Peter Henshaw.
Sunday, August 28, Green Valley -
Stableford
A Flight
1st Clinton Hazlett (9) 40pts
2nd Yui Bietry (14) 38pts
3rd David Day (14) 38pts
B Flight
1st Jean LaRoche (16) 39pts
2nd Peter Henshaw (16) 38pts
3rd Nick Shaw (17) 35pts
Australian Clinton Hazlett, who as seen his handicap climb over the last
two years, signaled that he may have solved the plot. Clint won the
monthly medal only last week with a spectacular 44 points and followed
that with an A Flight winning 40 points and man of the match honours,
that left the second place to Peter ‘the Silver Surfer’ Henshaw with an
impressive 38 point return that left Nick Shaw to close the flight on 35
points.
The laurels in B Flight went to the man riding a purple cloud, Canadian
Jean LaRoche with an excellent 39 points. Jean left the lower steps of
the podium to be sorted out by a count back between Lewiinski’s belle
Yui Bietry and David Day, with the ladies before gentlemen rule
prevailing, however David wasn’t disappointed for too long as got to
share a very healthy 2’s pot with Phil Haigh.
Tuesday, August 20, Greenwood - Stableford
1st Ian Wilson (21) 35pts
2nd Mike Jeffrey’s (17) 35pts
3rd Nick Shaw (17) 35pts
Ian Wilson, lethal off a 21 handicap, was good enough, albeit barely, to
edge victory on a three-way count back over Mike ‘the Welsh wizard’
Jeffreys and Nick Shaw for the man of the match honours. The silver went
to the Welshman and the bronze to Nick to match his Sunday third place
finish.
No 2’s were recorded so a rollover on Wednesday.
Wednesday, August 21, Bangpra - Stableford
A Flight
1st Lou Szigligeti (16) 40pts
2nd Peter Terry (17) 37pts
3rd Salvatore Brizzi (9) 32pts
B Flight
1st Bill Broschart (19) 35pts
2nd Ian Wilson (21) 34pts
3rd Rod Brown (17) 32pts
The pied piper of Oz, Lou Zigzag, has been considered a player of great
potential, or was it a sandbagging bandit. Well in any event, Lou showed
the ability all day that has only come in flashes as he was man of the
match with a sparkling 40 points.
Peter Terry, the man riding a purple patch, followed Lou up the podium
steps with 37 points and these two players were the only competitors to
better their handicaps. Aussie Salvatore Brizzi was pleased his 32
points landed him the bronze.
In B Flight, Bill Broschart was the top player with a solid 35 points as
Ian Wilson followed Tuesday’s first spot with the silver. In the
meantime, Rod Brown was relegating Aussie Nick Odnoral to the honorable
category with the aid of a count back.
Kevin Rodgers was the sole heir to the very healthy rollover 2’s pot - a
missing person alert was issued shortly after the presentation.
Friday, August 23, Treasure Hill - Stableford
A Flight
1st Bill Stewart (8) 37pts
2nd John Pierrel (12) 35pts
B Flight
1st Martin Allard (16) 38pts
2nd Jean LaRoche (18) 34pts
Didn’t I just mention Lou ‘the pied piper of Oz’ Zigzag in Wednesday’s
article? Maybe he should be the guy in the title well, perhaps he is.
But he did shoot the best score on the day for his second consecutive
win on a tough Treasure Hill. That was good for the top spot in B Flight
and the man of the match honours by a stroke from the A Flight top man
Bill Stewart.
John Stewart, never far from the podium, took the silver in A Fight two
strokes in arrears, as Jean LaRoche did the same in B Flight four shots
adrift of Lou. Interestingly both the silver finishers carded a 2 along
with Jim Bell.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3
near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and
add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is
provided.

Fitzgerald scores big at Navy
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Billy Fitzgerald, Alan Bissell and
Roar Berger.
Monday, August 19, Plutaluang - Stableford
We now alternate our nines here and today we booked the East and South courses,
which made a change from the tough West and North rounds we normally play. It is
great value here for two people sharing a cart with the green fee and caddy fee
as well.
There were six groups out today with the cut at 10-18 and 19 plus in division 2
and in this division Alan Bissell came in with 39 points to take the top podium
position. Lee Casey picked up second place with 36 points after beating Roar
Berger on a 20/19 back nine count back.
There was an even higher winning score in division 1 for in-form Billy
Fitzgerald who came in with 40 points. The frog, alias Jean Morel, took second
spot two points behind Billy, and Bryan Rought beat Mike Chatt and Lindsay
Phillips for third on a 20/17/15 back nine count back, all scoring 35 points.
Billy Fitzgerald birdied the 4th on the South course and John Oxley the 5th on
the East to share the ‘2’s pot in division 1, while in division 2 Lee Casey and
Peter Davies were happy with their ‘2’s.
Near pins went to Billy Fitzgerald (2), John Oxley, Peter Davies, Bruce Gardner
and Jean Morel (2).
Wednesday, August 21, Pleasant Valley - Stableford
This is becoming a popular venue for the majority of our players and
we are now here every four weeks and we started off the 10th today as the first
tee was quite busy.
Paul Butler, playing off 16, won division 1 with 38 points after beating Simon
Tillbrook on a 21/18 back nine count back and and in the news again, Billy
Fitzgerald beat Grenville Hill 22/17 after they both came in with 37 points. The
scissors will be out soon!
Martyn Arnold, the Cathay Pacific A380 captain, topped division 2 with 34 points
after beating Jonny Larsson by one point and Anna Marie Usher, playing off the
white tees, by two points.
There were two new names in the ‘2’s with Terry Madsen in division 1 and Bryan
Priestley in division 2, with birdies on the 8th and 13th respectively.
Near pin awards were picked up by Billy Fitzgerald, Lindsay Phillips, Steve
Richardson (2), Roar Berger, Paul Hartley (2) and Jonny Larsson.
Friday, August 23, Eastern Star -
Rainbow Stableford
This was our fun rainbow stableford game that we have here every
three months courtesy of the rollover kitty. Every player must select 6 red, 6
white and 6 blue tees to play from and this is a game of logic, knowing which
tees to play from and working the scenario out a few days before playing.
The cut today was 4-16 and 17 plus in division 2 and there were some
surprisingly low scores coming in. Our thoughts were between 36 and 39 in each
division but this was not the case as Iain Walsh won division 2 with 35 points,
the organizer came second on 32 and Alan Bissell took third with 30.
Bill Bertram was the winner in division 1 with 33 points, beating Paul Butler by
one who in turn edged Tony Thorne on a 19/17 back-nine count back.
The weather was perfect here today with an overcast sky and a cool breeze coming
off the coast and also the course condition had improved a lot since our moans
two weeks ago.
Paul Butler got the only ‘2’ of the day on the 13th and guess what, playing off
the ladies tee.
Near pins went to Steve Richardson, Marty Rock, Tony Thorne, Alan Bissell and
Sid Ottaway (2).
Technical prizes in 2 or 3 shots nearestto the pin were awarded to the
following: Martin Grimoldby (2), Rod Howett, Simon Tillbrook (2), Marty Rock,
Martyn Arnold (2), Karl Flood, Iain Walsh, Steve Richardson, Tony Thorne and
Alan Bissell.
It was a great fun day out which everyone enjoyed, especially those players who
had not heard or played this format before.

Evans edges Hanson on count back
PSC golf from Café Kronborg
Thursday, August 22, Mt. Shadow -
Stableford
1st Daryl Evans (20) 30pts
2nd Niels Hansen (14) 30pts

Daryl Evans.
Mountain Shadow was the game today and
after a quick check-in we were off the first tee under threatening skies
with a strong breeze accompanying us all day. The course was in fine
condition with very fast greens.
The being the low season, the course was also very quiet and we were able to
get around in just 3 hours and 45 minutes. Daryl Evans was the winner on a
count back from Niels Hanson, both with 30 points, but the course was the
overall winner once again.
Lasonder & Philp the standouts in Khao Yai

Mustering on the tee in Khao Yai.
Monday the 19th August we set off for the city of Pak Chong after having
breakfast at the bar. It was an uneventful drive up and we arrived in
just under 3 hours. After checking into the hotel we took off in convoy
to the Bonanza golf course, now officially called the Police Golf Club.
It was almost deserted so we got off to an early start and with six
groups waiting on the first tee there was the usual banter from the
players.
Once underway we were in for a shock as the greens had been cored and
not sanded very well so it was the luck of the bounce when you got to
the green which way the putt would go. Some would say the greens were
great, while others won’t go back there for a while. However, it was the
captain’s day today as every putt just went sideways into the hole and
they were falling from everywhere for him.

Tuesday winners (left-right) Greig Ritchie,
Willim Lasonder and Jeff North.
There were only 8 players that scored under 30 points out of 24 players
so the course must have something going for it. It was the perfect
weather for a game as the temperature up there in the Khao Yai area is
only in the high 20s.
Coming in third today was Darl White with 36 points, in second was John
Player with 37 and first place went to Capt Bob with a magic 44 points.
There were only two 2’s today and they both came from Phil Waite.
On Tuesday our venue was the Khao Yai Golf and Country Club, a well
liked course and playing it was a privilege as this course must surely
be rated among the top ones in Thailand and once again there were no
other players out there.
We were down a player with Lumpy Meyers not being able to play, I think
the scribe should have stayed at home also, not being a wild wind player
some holes here today were playing like par fives, for example the ninth
395 yards with a cracking drive and a three wood and still forty yards
short made for hard work. I think that only when we got to the 15th was
the wind finally with us.

George Barrie, Wayne Cotterell and Gus George.
The scores were much the same as Tuesday with Jeff North taking third
place on a fantastic 40 points, a score which would win a tournament
here most every time but not today. Coming second was Greig Ritchie with
a great 42 points, but taking the top spot was Willim Lasonder matching
the Capt’s knock from Tuesday with 44 points. It was a magic round mate
and congrats from all of us.
There were two 2’s coming from Jim Bell and Jeff North.
I must say it was a great trip with all enjoying themselves and there
will be another one next month so watch out for news of events in the
bar or go to the website:
www.billabonggolfbar.com.
Wednesday, August 21, Green Valley - Stableford
It just goes to show how popular Green Valley is, after
having two days up in Khao Yai there were still five groups that played
today and one of the golfers that went up there won the day and got the
only ‘2’ also. Three days in a row is too much for this old bag of bones
so it was a day off for the scribe.
The weather was just right for golf as there was good cloud cover to
keep the heat out. Starting on the first tee we were right alongside the
red markers and everyone was thinking it was going to be an easy day out
but it didn’t eventuate as out of 21 players there were only eight who
beat 30 points.
The battle for fourth place was a three-way count back between Gus
George, Paul Greenaway and Robert Marsh, with Gus getting the nod due to
his 20 points on the back nine. Third place was taken by George Barrie
with 36 points and second went to Martin Kingswood with 37 points. But
the man of the day again was Wayne ‘Mr. Consistency’ Cotterell with a
fine 40 points. And as stated previously, Cottee also got the only ‘2’
of the day.
Note: If you are looking for a game with some friendly golfers, give Bob
a call on 082 204 3411 or call into the bar and put your name on the
start sheet.

White wins in style with 43-pointer
PSC golf from the Caddyshack

Emmet White.
Wednesday, August 21, Green Valley - Stableford
We had 18 players at Green Valley on Wednesday and the scoring was generally
good with James Savage taking the win on 39 points, 2 ahead of second placed
Mike Pledger. Mike Phillips and Don Hachey completed the podium in that
order with Don just getting the better of Bob Linbuirg on countback for
fourth.
1st James Savage (20) 39pts
2nd Mike Pledger (15) 37pts
3rd Mike Phillips (12) 36pts
4th Don Hachey (20) 35pts
Friday, August 23, Green Valley - Stableford
We had a similar sized group on Friday as 17 players returned for
another crack at Green Valley. It seems Wednesday was just a dress rehearsal
as the point tallies today were outstanding.

James Savage.
Emmet White led the field home with 43 points off his 14 handicap and was
followed in second place by George Way who also broke the 40-point barrier.
Ed Horrocks and Ramsay Smith were tied up on 39 points each as the battled
for the minor podium spots but Jason just had the better of the back nine on
count back.

Cleaver slices through the field
Travellers Rest Golf Group

Derek Thorogood (third from
left) - winner at Eastern Star.
Andy Rich
Jim Cleaver has been walking round with an inscrutable smile on his face
lately, like the cat that got the cream. Now it may be something to do with
becoming a new father or it could be, as I believe, he knows he is on top of
his golf game.
He let me into a little secret this week into how and why he is not only
driving his golf ball a country mile but straight as well. It’s all down to
his new Teaching Pro and a lot of hard work and as he says, when he is only
left with a nine iron or a pitching wedge into the green after yet another
enormous drive it tends to make golf relatively easy compared to when he
used to try and hit the green with a fairway wood or even a five iron. More
about Jim in a minute.
Monday, August 19, Eastern Star - Stableford
On Monday the TRGG headed off to do battle at Eastern Star and
judging by the scores returned the golf course won. Only the winner Derek
Thorogood got anywhere near to playing to his handicap. There was however
quite a battle for second and third spot where Kazu Narahara won out on
count back from Dave Edwards.
1st Derek Thorogood (16) 36pts
2nd Kazu Narahara (13) 31pts
3rd Dave Edwards (10) 31pts
Tuesday, August 20, Crystal Bay - Stableford
A small but very select group visited Crystal Bay (A and B
courses) on Tuesday and it soon became a gunfight between all the long
hitters to take the top three places.
Aberdonian Jim Cooper had a good day, shooting 39 pts and taking first
place. Simon Tapster, who also hits a mean ball, took the runners up spot
with 36 pts and that man again Jim Cleaver finished in third on 34.
1st Jim Cooper (14) 39pts
2nd Simon Tapster (13) 36pts
3rd Jim Cleaver (11) 34pts
Thursday, August 22, Phoenix -
Stableford
Thursday and it was off to Phoenix as usual (Mountain and Lakes)
and this week very surprisingly there were no lady golfers in the group at
all. As I have said before, the ladies always do very well at Phoenix so I
can only guess that they have all got fed up beating all the men every week.

Jim Cleaver - winner at Phoenix.
Mind you it was a good week for them to go missing as
none of them would have been able to keep up with Jim Cleaver. Despite
having his handicap docked to eleven last week he still managed to shoot 42
pts to win by a street. That means he will be playing off nine next time he
plays.
Nino Dinardo and Jim Cooper had a head to head to take second and third spot
and it was only on count back that they could be separated where Nino took
the honours.
1st Jim Cleaver (11) 42 pts
2nd Nino Dinardo (16) 36pts
3rd Jim Cooper (13) 36pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like to
play a round of golf with the TRGG please phone Fergus Brennan on 086 056
7019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name to the
weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.
Golfnutter: Games Golfers Play

Welcome to Golfnutter’s Blog – a weekly commentary
highlighting contemporary golfing issues, in Pattaya and beyond. For more on
matters golf, especially Pattaya golf, visit golfnutter.wordpress.com.
A bit tired of the usual stableford format that most tournament play
demands? Want to spice up your four-ball by introducing your regular
partners to something different??
Some golf venues have the occasional “fun” day where the golf need not be so
serious. Equally, for those who don’t play in organised groups, perhaps a
“fun” day offers a unique way of getting into your mate’s wallet.
Here’s a suggested list of events I will label “alternative”. Some are
better suited to a four-ball out on their own, whilst others could be played
amongst a bigger field. They are listed in order of tameness – from meek to
outrageous. All are designed for betting.
Alternative 1 – Split Sixes: Suitable for three-balls. A tried and true way
to provide a competitive edge for three-balls. Each hole offers six points
which are allocated according to stableford score per player per hole. If
each player scores two stablefords on a hole, then the six points would be
split equally. If one player scores net birdie (3 stablefords), and another
net par (2 stablefords) whilst the third net bogeys, then points allocated
would be 4 + 2 + 0 and so on. Baht values are allocated to points prior to
starting. Points are tallied up at the end of the round to determine who
pays whom what. Note: all six points to one player if their score on any
hole is better than the second-placed score by a net two shots. This helps
maintain interest from a distant third placegetter during the final holes.
Alternative 2 – Rainbow: Suitable for any number. Each player is allowed to
choose their tee-box for each hole, providing they finish with six hit from
the Blues, six from the Whites/Yellows and six from the Reds. The player who
thinks through the issues relative to the course being played, and applies
the best strategy relative to handicap, will be favoured to do well.
Alternative 3 – Holding the Snake: Suitable for a four-ball or less. Any
player three-putting or worse (the first putt must start from on the green),
contributes an agreed amount into the kitty. As each contribution is made,
the snake (a toy replica) is passed from one contributor to another. The
last person to three-putt is left holding the snake, and must match the
amount in the kitty.
Alternative 4 – South African Stableford: Suitable for a four-ball or group.
Teams of two combine their stableford score on each hole, but in this case
the scores are multiplied. So, two net pars would mean 2x2=4. The fun really
starts when one player gets a three or four pointer only to have his/her
partner blob the hole. Multiply anything by zero and what do you get?
Alternative 5 – Strike Three: Suitable for mid-to-high handicap groups. Each
player gets to discard their three worst scoring holes, after the round is
completed. This is great for players who always have two or three blow-ups
per round.
Alternative 6 – Bisque: Suitable for a four-ball or group. Forget how the
course has rated each hole, i.e., the stroke index; you decide. This game
allows the player to use their handicap how and when they want, until they
run out. Up to two shots may be used on any one hole, provided the player
states his/her intention prior to starting that particular hole.
Alternative 7 – Steal: Suitable for four-ball match (FBBB-match in British
terms. Pairs match-play in US terms). The winner of a hole gets to choose
which of their opponent’s clubs becomes out of play – for the remainder of
the round. A team may have a club reinstalled if they make net birdie or
better to win a hole. New skills will be needed here as players learn how to
execute shots in different ways with different clubs. Hint; maybe your 14
clubs should include an extra putter or two.
Alternative 8 – Atlanta: Suitable for four-ball match only. This is an
absolute hoot! Four players tee-off the first tee. The two balls furthest
right are partners against the two balls furthest left – for that hole only.
This procedure is used for all 18 holes. Scoring is based upon combined
stableford with each point worth an amount agreed prior to commencement.
Now, imagine the ball of the first player going into a water hazard, or
worse, OB? How far in the opposite direction will the second player align?
And what about the next tee shot, and the one after that? Whilst a lot of
fun, this game needs to be played on a near-deserted course. The alternative
is to temporarily suspend the “left versus right” rule until the group
behind plays through. Pick a course with lots of water!
Happy golfing,
Golfnutter

United in top form against TOT
Pattaya United take on TOT in Bangkok,
Saturday, August 24. (Photo courtesy Pattaya United FC)
It might be a long shot but Pattaya United are starting to give their
fans just the faintest glimmer of hope that they might be capable of
putting a string of results together to pull themselves out of the
relegation quagmire.
After a disappointing 2-1 home loss to Bangkok United in last week’s
midweek match, United travelled to TOT on Saturday looking to rediscover
the scoring form that saw them beat local rivals Chonburi and push
leaders Muang Thong all the way in recent matches.
At the TOT Stadium in Chiang Wattana, Dolphin fans had to wait until 2
minutes into the second half to see their team break the deadlock as
Kritsana Taiwan powered in a header from 12 yards out.
United would go on to double their lead on 68 minutes, this time forward
Efe Obobe applying the finishing touch after the TOT defence made a hash
of clearing the ball from their area. The coup de grace for United came
in the final minute of stoppage time as Obobe turned provider this time,
laying on an easy conversion for Jinta at the far post.
The win takes Pattaya level on points with Chiangrai United but still
three behind Samut Songkhram in the safety zone. Pattaya United now face
back-to-back home matches against Suphanburi on Sunday, Sept. 1 followed
by BEC Tero Sasana on Sept. 7. Kick-off for both games is scheduled for
6 p.m.
