Nigel Quennell, president of the Rotary Club of Eastern Seaboard Pattaya, celebrated the birthday of his two sons on July 28 by taking children from the Child Protection & Development Center out to a hefty lunch.
Nigel was accompanied by his wife Som and four of his children: Jay, 16, Jonny, 9, (the two birthday boys) Jenni and Elizabeth, as well as some of his friends from the Rotary Club Eastern Seaboard: Russell Iffland, Tatiana Sokolova, Maggie Travis, Joy and Carl Dyson, Michael Todd-White, Jan and Ket Abbink.
The children at the center were more than delighted by the welcome change of their daily routine and had the same fun as the visiting grown-ups, who were happy to bring some smiles onto the children’s faces.
When Jay and Jonny were asked if they would get another birthday present, other than taking the less fortunate kids out to lunch, they looked questioning at their father - yet Nigel wouldn’t give the secret away.

Navy School recruits students to sort trash to earn cash for facility

Teachers, local officials and students ready themselves for the new recycling project.

Patcharapol Panrak
Separating garbage has joined reading, writing and arithmetic on the syllabus at Sattahip District’s Navy School where students are manning a “recycling bank” to raise funds for the school, as well as raise environmental awareness.
Khet Udomsak Mayor Pairoj Malakul Na Ayuthaya announced the launch of the recycling effort July 19 with Principal Suphanee klang-ngern about 100 government workers and students.
Faced with a worsening trash problem, the city is teaching students a whole new set of R’s: reduce, reuse and recycle. Garbage is being delivered to the school from homes and businesses and students separate glass, plastic and other recyclables.
The Khet Udomsak Recycling Center then hauls away the reusable materials and pays the school. Funds will be used for upkeep and renovation.
Suphanee told the kids that only 36 percent of the waste disposed locally is done properly. Too many spots in Sattahip, she said, have turned into open illegal dumps. Reducing trash totals, reusing the reusable and recycling the rest is the best strategy, she said.

Pattaya urges students to kick junk-food habit

Students from Pattaya schools listen to a lecture about proper foods for different age groups and the role of nutrition in developing the physique for sports and exercise.

Pattaya schools brought in a nutritionist to lecture to more than 200 students, hoping they can kick the junk-food habit.
Ornanong Thaweesukh from the 3rd Sanitation Center spoke to 211 kids at city hall July 29 about proper foods for different age groups and the role of nutrition in developing the physique for sports and exercise. She also told the students about the importance of getting adequate rest and how food can help them grow and prevent disease.
“Food consumption is another important part of growing up and, currently, children have a high tendency to suffer from obesity stemming from consuming excessive fats,” said Pattaya Deputy Mayor Wutisak Rermkitkarn. “That shows these children have not been given food-management care.”
The training, he said, was to make kids aware of disease related to obesity and help them plan meals consistent with their age-related needs.
