Pattaya Sports Club Bowling League

200 Bowlers: Jang, Tao and Kran.

This week is the final week of this league and it is becoming clearer who is going to win trophies. Café Kronborg looks like the favorite to win first place after winning three points from Indiana. Indiana dropped from second place to third. Kran Nielsen had another good week with a 204 game and 542 series for Kronborg.
Tukata Thompson bowled a 519 series to lead Green Tree to a four point win over VFW Post 9876. Green Tree moved up from third to second place but will have to play Café Kronborg in the final week.
Semper FI won three points from Bavaria with Tao leading the way with a 208 game and 569 series and Captain Joe Ferral chipping in with a 532 series. Jang Shaw bowled a 212 game and 502 series for Bavaria.
Semper FI is tied with Indiana for third place and they will play each other in the final week.
Canada won three points from the Blind team and they moved up from seventh to sixth place.
Brother D won all four points from Jack Tar. Sue Murphy bowled a 533 series and Tue Pettae had a 522 for Brother D. Brother D moved up from ninth to eighth and Jack Tar fell from sixth to seventh place.
Note: The new league will be starting in two or three weeks and we need new bowlers. You don’t need to be a good bowler because the handicap system will help you compete. Come out and enjoy with us as it is just a fun week but the trophies are really great and no plastic trophies are given.

Neil & Ebrahim sparkle at Crystal Bay

PSC Golf from The Growling Swan

Bent Agerbo, Ken Hole & Partner, Kevin Waycott & Tony Yemm.

Peter Blackburn
Monday, July 15, Crystal Bay, A & B – Stableford
For a change I awoke to a fine and sunny Pattaya Monday morning and joined the rest of the crew at The Growling Swan as we prepared to make the journey to Crystal Bay Golf Course. We had a very good field of 23 golfers and we were happy to welcome back John (J.P.) Pierrel from Texas, USA, Bent Agerbo & Peer Bruun from Denmark and Neil Herd & Mike Quill from Geraldton Golf Club in Western Australia.
It was sadly time to say farewell to Paul Avery who is returning to Cairns, Queensland, Alan “Colonel” Sanders who is going back to the Gold Coast in Australia and Rocky Lawson & Rob Cross who are also returning to Australia.
Departing the GS a couple of minutes ahead of schedule at 8.38 a.m. we proceeded well through the Monday morning traffic and found Highway 3 not too bad as we arrived at the golf course 45 minutes later. There was a fair amount of activity at this popular venue and our tee time was not until 10.10 a.m. so we took our time with some chipping practice around the first tee (A1) and then got our first group away 10 minutes ahead of schedule.

Neil Herd, Ebrahim & Rocky Lawson.

The weather was great and the course looked a treat with freshly mown fairways although some of the greens were a touch “iffy” after recent coring and sanding but all in all the golf course was in very good condition, particularly considering the amount of rain we have had in the past week. The groups in front were quite swift so we proceeded at a very good pace and managed to complete our round in four hours & ten minutes.
We were able to have 2 grades with A Grade being for handicaps 0 to 14 and B Grade for handicaps of 15 and over with 4 prizes in each grade. There were also rewards for nearest the pins all the par threes and longest first putts on the A9 & B9 greens.
The A Grade was won by Neil Herd with a fine 39 points and he remarked it was his best score and first win in Thailand in 7 years. Second spot went to the departing Paul Avery on 38 points and Peer Bruun finished third with 37 points. With 2 golfers on 36 points a count back was required which saw Peter “Blacky” Blackburn (18 point back nine) take fourth place from Takeshi Hakozaki (16 point back nine).
In the B Grade it was Ebrahim who was victorious with an excellent 40 points, just 1 point ahead of Bent Agerbo in second place. Geri Crilly finished third with 34 points and Frank “Woody” Donnelly was fourth scoring 33 points.
A Flight (0-14)
1st Neil Herd (10) 39pts
2nd Paul Avery (10) 38pts
3rd Peer Bruun (12) 37pts
4th Peter Blackburn (12) 36pts
B Flight (15+)
1st Ebrahim (15) 40pts
2nd Bent Agerbo (22) 39pts
3rd Geri Crilly (27) 34pts
4th Frank Donnelly (20) 33pts
Near Pins: A5 – Martin Todd, A8 – Takeshi Hakozaki, B4 – Martin Todd, B6 – John Pierrel
Long Putts: A9 – Peer Bruun, B9 – Ebrahim
The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won by last start A Grade winner Rocky Lawson (chocolates to boiled lollies) and he accepted and wore the award with pride for a considerable time back at the bar.
Max “Corsets” Bracegirdle was kind enough to parade Deefa the Dog and of course collected many donations for the needy in Pattaya from our generous Growling Swan Golfers.

Thursday, July 18, Burapha, C & D – Stableford

This was a very special day for us. It was Ken Hole’s 75th birthday and he decided to celebrate it by sponsoring the day, which included providing all the prizes and also a meal back at the Growling Swan afterwards. Naturally there was a very good response to this event so after a cancellation and a no–show we had an excellent field of 30 golfers assembled at the GS in readiness for the departure to the classy Burapha Golf Course.
We welcomed my old mate Jason McDonald of Champagne A-Go-Go fame, Englishmen Graham Hiskett and Stuart Gordon now residing in Pattaya, Tony Olcorn back from Brisbane, Australia and Graham “Grunter” Buckingham returning from an international Scrabble tournament in Bangkok. We were also thankful to Warwick “Kiwi” Anderson for picking up the tab for the 3 mini vans which we used for transportation on the day.
It’s only a 30 minute drive to the golf course so after departing the GS 5 minutes early at 8.25 a.m. we arrived at the course in plenty of time for our 10.05 a.m. booking. We were allocated the C & D nines which I personally have not played for about fifteen years so it was with much anticipation that we stepped up to the tee on C1 and managed to send our first four-ball away 5 minutes ahead of schedule.
The weather was terrific, not too hot with a nice cooling breeze and the golf course was in fantastic condition with pristine fairways and slick greens, at times two paced but beautifully maintained. We proceeded in a fairly quick fashion and even with lots of traffic in front of us we were able to complete the round in just on four hours.
It was a terrific experience playing these two nines again and after enjoying the fantastic views and great conditions it had certainly been a memorable day so thanks very much to Ken Hole for sponsoring the day.
We were able to have 2 grades with A Grade being for handicaps 0 to 20 and B Grade for handicaps of 21 and over with 4 prizes in each grade. There were also rewards for nearest the pins all the par threes and longest first putts on the C9 & D9 greens.
The winner in A Grade with a fine 38 points was Kevin “Wayco” Waycott, closely followed in second place by your writer, Peter “Blacky” Blackburn who had 37 points. In third spot was Mark West on 36 points and Martin “Toddy” Todd finished fourth with 34 points.
With easily the best score of the day it was once more Bent Agerbo who finished on top of the B Grade with an excellent 41 points and after his 39 points earlier in the week he can look forward to losing 1 or 2 shots off his handicap on the weekend. With 2 golfers on 36 points a count back was necessary and it saw Gary Monley (20 point back nine) take second place from Geri Crilly (17 point back nine) and Andrew “Turtle” Allen finished in fourth place with 33 points.
A Flight (0-20)
1st Kevin Waycott (11) - 38pts
2nd Peter Blackburn (12) 37pts
3rd Mark West (15) 36pts
4th Martin Todd (9) 34pts
B Flight (21+)
1st Bent Agerbo (22) 41pts
2nd Gary Monley (36) 36pts
3rd Geri Crilly (27) 36pts
4th Andrew Allen (36) 33pts
Near Pins: C5 – John Pierrel, C8 – Max Bracegirdle, D2 – Peter Blackburn, D8 – Gary Monley
Long Putts: C9 – Warwick Anderson, D9 – Gary Monley
The Growling Swan NAGA Award was won by Tony Yemm and he accepted & wore the award with pride for a considerable time back at the bar. Back at The Growling Swan afterwards our sponsor of the day Ken Hole welcomed everyone and thanked them all for coming and after reminding everyone of the “cheap” day that had transpired he suggested that we all dig deep and donate to Deefa the Dog which he paraded around the bar with great response from everyone. It had been a memorable day and once again many thanks to Ken & Kiwi for their generosity.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low & high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker Bar) in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at 8.30 am. For bookings or more information please contact Peter on 0806 351 386 or email to [email protected]

Bill Cleal on top at Emerald

Beaver Bar Golf Society

Bill Cleal.

As the weather cleared and the sun dried the Emerald Golf Club, the players enjoyed their rounds of golf last Friday, 19 July, participating in the weekly golf organized by the Beaver Bar in Ban Chang.
Nearest the pin award on hole #13 was won by the Beaver Bar as no one landed on the green - probably due to the tee box moved to the back tee box.
High stableford points for the day was won by Bill Cleal, a first time winner, while Roger Ison arrived with the same points total but lost out on the count back.
All retired to the Beaver Bar later to enjoy some refreshments.

Cooney sneaks in by one at Bangpra

PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch

Monday, July 15, Bangpra – Stableford
Fifteen golfers today for our regular visit to one of the most popular courses on our schedule, not least because we’re always made to feel welcome here. Having said that, unfortunately the course wasn’t at it’s best today with the greens, particularly on the front nine, being very bumpy, due to being in the process of recovering from recent coring.

A good week for Gerry Cooney.

The always amiable starter managed to get us off the first tee a few minutes ahead of schedule, but although the course appeared quiet, the leading group soon caught up with other golfers and the pace of play slowed considerably. The weather was bright and breezy, and the fairways firm, so conditions were almost ideal and even Lee Butler decided to walk rather than taking a buggy.
We welcomed back veteran Bunker Boy, Bob Turner for a rare game, and he managed to produce the highlight of the day despite an indifferent round. Bob’s tee shot on the par three eighth hole rolled up to within three inches of the pin (he tells the story as two inches!), almost giving us our first hole in one for over two years.
Gerry Cooney continued his recent run of good form to take the top podium position ahead of Tony Robbins, who took second place on a count back from Mashi Kaneta.
1st Gerry Cooney (13) 34pts
2nd Tony Robbins (13) 33pts
3rd Mashi Kaneta (16) 33pts
Near Pins: Bob Turner, Geoff Hart, Gerry Cooney and John Graham.
Wednesday, July 17, Khao Kheow A & C - Stableford
A beautiful sunny day as a smaller group of golfers headed off from The Ranch to tackle the treacherous Khaow Kheow course.
We arrived at the course to find it virtually deserted and it didn’t take us long to find out why. We were allocated to play the A and C courses because the B course is still closed, but what no one told us was that the fairways on A and C are in a sorry state with huge areas of them reduced to dried mud. Whether the damage was deliberate repairs or accidental damage we were unable to ascertain, but the areas are too large to be designated as GUR, and it will be quite some time before the course will be anywhere near top condition.
The mud didn’t affect Mashi’s game too much, as he romped home with a fine score of 38 points, four points clear of second place Gerry Cooney. Mashi had a great start to the round with five pars over the first six holes producing a score of 21 points on the outward nine, and then continued to play steadily on the inward nine.
At the other end of the scale, Barry Murnin continued his disastrous run of form by “wiping” four of the first six holes and managing to score only 8 points on the outward nine, before recovering on the back nine to avoid carding the worst score of the month to date.
1st Mashi Kaneta (16) 38pts
2nd Gerry Cooney (13) 34pts
3rd John Graham (9) 31pts
Near Pins: John Graham, Alan Sullivan and Tony Clarke (2)
The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new players are always welcome. Contact “Buff” on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663 for all enquiries. You can find all the news, schedules and results on our website at www.bunkersociety.com.

Warberg wins on count-back

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Derek Brook
Tuesday, July 13, Phoenix – Stableford
This course is in many respects the closest to Pattaya for the general golfer and thus is usually fairly heavily used. The drive there is very straight forward and one can get there in quick time. The layout consists of three nine holes and on this day we were to play the Mountain and Lake nines.

Dick Warberg.

Traffic was fairly quiet on the drive down there and with the book-in being quick we were on the practice tee well in advance of our time. It did however give us time to practice our putting, something we do not normally have the chance to do.
Onto the start on the Mountain, we found the ground soft but not soft enough for any special rules to be brought in. So off we went pretty much on time as one would expect here. This is a course where there are so many warnings about that one can be bemused, and amused, by many of them. On this day the warnings were not needed, we were all good boys, probably because it rained most of the time and we needed to keep going.
It started to rain half way through the first nine, but we battled on and got wet. It reminded one of a rainy day on a course in UK. It just rained, not heavy but consistent, so we plowed on. It made the day difficult as the fairways were a bit soggy and the balls started to pick up mud, the rough got difficult and hard to get out of, and the greens became unpredictable. A difficult day indeed!
Once showered, I went down to the restaurant to find as expected that very few of our players were there, as they usually all are at other courses. The few who were there commentated on the fact that they enjoyed the food and the prices were now reasonable. It takes a long time to lose a dodgy reputation.

Steve Hamstad.

Back at Bert’s it was soon time for the results and I thank Gez Tracy for sponsoring the ‘Near Pins’. Also to Bert for ‘The Golfers Special’, of which Dick Warberg had two! The winner with 35 points was the aforementioned Dick Warberg ahead of Steve Hamstad in second on count back. In third was Mashi Kaneta with 34 points ahead of the scribe Derek Brook in fourth on count back. In fifth was Daryl Evans with 32 points. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Gary Lemon, Mick O’Brien, John Hackett

Bobs birdie blitz secures the medal

PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society

Sunday, July 14, Green Valley - Monthly Medal
A Flight
1st Bob Watson (2) net 68
2nd Ed Wyckoff (9) net 68
3rdPaul Heyworth (9) net70
B Flight
1st Mick Beresford (17) net 70
2nd Eddy Beilby (20) net 70
3rd Barry Copestake (15) net 72
Near Pins: No 4 Bill Brochart, No 9 Bob Newell, No 12 Mick Beresford, No 16 Jean LaRoche

Sunday’s medal winner Bob Watson (right) with Colin Davis.

The man of the match and monthly medal winner for July 2013 was none other than Aussie Ace Bob Watson (one for the Aussies). Bob outpointed Ed ‘our man in the white house’ Wyckoff in a senior circuit count back, both locked on net 68’s. It should be noted that Bob’s score included six birdies and belies a gross 70. Bob also won the cut glass whiskey goblet, a non-transferable invite to the Gold medal to be held later in the year, and last but not least Bob’s name will be etched on the Lewiinski’s wall of shame.
Irishman Paul Heyworth rounded out the flight with a very commendable net 70.
Mick ‘nine holes’ Beresford managed to play all of the course and bettered Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby on count back to fill the top podium place in the junior flight, whilst Barry ‘the boot’ Copestake started to give indications that improvement is on the way.
Tony ‘the Right Honorable’ Cotter, brother to Seamus Cotter - arguably one of Ireland’s top jockeys and golfing legend here at Lewiinski’s, was welcomed to the society.
Bill Brochart, Bob Newell, Mick Beresford and Jean LaRoche shared the 2’s pot.
Tuesday, July 16, Siam Plantation - Stableford
1st Nick Odnoral (18) 40pts
2nd John Pierrel (13) 38pts
3rd Nick Shaw (17) 36pts
It being the low season, the society tries to get out once or twice to some of the courses that are inordinately priced in the high season. This was an opportunity to play one of the newest courses in the Eastern Seaboard constellation - Siam Country Club Plantation.
The lads and lasses took on the Tapioca and Pineapple layouts. The white tees measure out at 6078 yards but seem to play somewhat shorter. That would certainly help explain the A Flight winning score of 40 points attributable to Aussie Ace Nick Odnoral. Nick’s excellent effort kept him two points clear of his podium mate John Pierrel. The balance of the podium was to be filled with a fellow who had an even par round but which one? The numbers went favorably for Nick Shaw but not for Freddy Startrek, he was left out in the cold counting the stars.
Nick Odnoral carded the only 2 of the day.
Wednesday, July 17, Burapha - Stableford
A Flight
1st Laurie McBride (13) 36pts
2nd Yves Moutier (15) 36pts
3rd Jim Bell (16) 35pts
B Flight
1st Rod Brown (19) 40pts
2nd Ed Delaney (26) 38pts
3rd Mike Jeffreys (19) 34pts
Rod Brown cited “never leaving himself a short putt” as the reason he was able to leave the field behind and stand atop the B Flight podium. He needed every trick in his well worn but extensive book of golf tricks to edge Ed ‘the computer whiz kid’ Delaney by 40 points to 38. Mike ‘the Welsh Wizard’ Jeffreys on 34 points was as unassuming as Mike would want - he drew no attention but managed to drag a little baht back to the cave.
Laurie McBride and Yves Moutier took the two top rungs in A Flight with only a count back separating their even par round efforts. Jim ‘AK47’ Bell, who has mastered his swing and now shows consistent progress on the course, took the bronze a shot adrift.
Rod Brown fired the only 2 of the day.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Carter’s close call

The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

On Monday, 15th July, the new golfing week began for the Pattaya Golf Society with a visit to Green Valley for a stableford competition on the course which is in excellent condition this low season. Fairways are rich and greens are true and a good score awaits the golfer who can control his game.
The single flight saw Aussie Mike Marshall get nothing but plaudits for his 37 points whilst an all Aussie trio took the top three places. Firing his best round for a while Ken Grimes recorded 39 points for third whilst “soul mate” Robbie Taylor went one better to record forty points for second. The winner, for the second successive round, was Phil Carter and his 41 points matched the group’s best Green Valley round in two years.
There was a birdie ‘2’ as well as Rob Lamond finished the ninth in style. Rabbi’s free beer prize for the non winners went to Geoff Reynolds whilst Dick Batson enjoyed the Booby Bevy after another dour round.
After a few rounds on quite “iffy” courses it was a delight to be at Green Valley again and Phil Carter and Robbie Taylor certainly celebrated in fine style.
Treble up for Carter
A round of golf at Royal Lakeside is always a treat and can be a fillip to the golfer whose game may be in the doldrums as the course is always in fine condition. Wednesday, 17th July was no exception as the Pattaya Golf Society left the bustle of Pattaya to play a stableford competition on the banks of the Bangpakong River. An empty course welcomed the group as they teed off before time and a stiff breeze contained the gofers enthusiasm and kept them comfortable.
Three golfers shared second place with 33 points and for Michael Sim, Pete Dunsmore and Rob Lamond the reward was for some clinical and accurate golf in the windy conditions. For the third successive round the top spot was reserved for Phil Carter who managed a level par round this time and the rest of the group will welcome his trip to Cambodia at the end of the week!
Elsewhere Takeshi Hakozaki and Dick Batson both recorded birdie ‘2’s on the sixth and fifteenth holes respectively whilst Geoff Reynolds took the Booby Bevy for failing to beat the returning Mr Len’s score after a six week lay-off with health problems.
It proved to be another successful and enjoyable golf day at Royal Lakeside.
Jonsson again,
ten years on
On Friday, 19th July, the Pattaya Golf Society visited Crystal Bay to play a stableford competition on the A and B nines which were in excellent condition, as always.
With the recent form of Phil Carter taking a holiday in Cambodia another golfer would be picking up the winner’s mantle and competition was tight to decide on this title. Hence there was a four-way tie for third place with Murray Edwards, Rod Black, Dick Batson and Takeshi Hakozaki all sharing the place. In second was Paul Edgar with 34 points and the winner was Icelander Kerry Jonsson, with 37 points, and who took his first win with the group since 1st April, 2003!
Takeshi recorded two birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy went to Peter Sanderson who recorded another birdie ‘2’ in a handicap qualifying round and was not in the competition proper. The words “in it” and “win it” spring to mind. And so it was that the week with PGS had ended on another fun high spot and good golf lies in wait for the group for the next week as well.

It’s ‘Bomber’ Harris again

Phoenix Members Golf Society

Tuesday winners pose with the staff at The Relax Bar.

Mike Gerrard
As we started off today, Tuesday, July 16, the rain started also and for the next three holes it looked like we were all going to get a good soaking. This was not the short storm torrential downpour that we all identify here in the tropics but a steady, sharp rain, reminiscent of the type we get in Europe, or certainly in the UK. The only difference being it is warm rain here rather than cold freezing stuff.
I think if the rain had started 10 minutes earlier we may well have thought about cancelling the day. The sky did not look good. However, because we are such perfect godly (or Buddha) people, the rain abated and the skies started to look a little bit more like Thai skies. With just a very slight shower somewhere later in the day it turned out to be a great day on the fairways of Phoenix.
Such is the nature of the position of Phoenix compared to the rain patterns that the carts were still being allowed on the fairways. It would appear that courses like Green Valley, St. Andrews & Plutaluang must bear the brunt of most of the heavy showers being surrounded by mountains.
Safely back and his feet firmly fixed on the fairways of Phoenix, Peter ‘Bomber’ Harris won the day with a fine 38 points. In second place was our very own John Bartley with 36 points and in third was Bob ‘The Boston Burglar’ Neylon with 35. Taking fourth place was our new knockout competition organisor, John Clift, and running in at fifth was Mukesh ‘Mr. Consistancy’ Thakkar with 34 points.
Near pins prizes went to Stuart Gordon, Bob Neylon, John Bartley & Sergio Volpi. The latter possibly being the better one on Lake 7 hole which was nigh on impossible to hit against the wind.
Stuart Gordon, who claimed one of the near pins, thought that he would win two by going on to birdie both holes, only to be beaten by someone behind. Must have been J.B!
Lucky draw prizes (donated by our hosts The Relax Bar) were awarded to Stuart Gordon, Drew (son of Harvey) Trewarn, and Joris Goetschalckx.
Due to Drew Trewarn leaving us to go back to work and earn his father’s fortune (I always thought sons spent their father’s fortunes. Mine tried anyway, but lost), we awarded him with a free Society shirt. Well his father did pay for them all!

Bennett bags hole-in-one at the Valley

Travellers Rest Golf Group

Andy Rich
Every golfer dreams of shooting a hole in one at sometime in their career. Some are lucky and achieve it more than once whilst many others never realize their dream. On Tuesday 16th July the TRGG paid a visit to the picturesque golf course at Green Valley and Gary Bennett had his dream come true when he shot a hole in one at the 144-yard par three 16th hole. Well done Gary!

Gary Bennett scored a hole-in-one at Green Valley.

I am sure this made his day but one man’s good luck meant another man’s bad luck. The unlucky guy was Richard Talbot, our bionic marathon runner, who shot a ‘2’ at one of the other par three’s and thought he had got his hands on the ‘2’s pot, normally around a thousand baht, only to find he had been pipped on the line by Gary’s hole in one.
Richard was obviously so put out he turned out again on Thursday at Phoenix and won the competition and the winner’s pot. What Buddha takes away with one hand he gives back with the other.
Monday, July 15, Plutaluang N & W - Stableford
On Monday 15th July it was an early return to Plutaluang, not only because of the terrific value this course offers but because it is in such good condition at the moment. At least two of our golfers were pleased with that decision because they both returned excellent scores, shooting 40+ points. Bob Cannon again showed how his game has improved over the last couple of months by taking the honours.

Jim McNeill - winner at Green Valley.

1st Bob Cannon (19) 42pts
Simon Tapster (17) 40pts
Paul Kruining (28) 32pts
Tuesday, July 16, Green Valley – Stableford
I have already told you of Gary Bennett’s hole in one and Richard Talbot missing out on the ‘2’s pot but neither of their achievements were good enough to get them into the first three places. Jim McNeill fought out the number one spot with John O’Donaghue and Jim finished triumphant by just one point.
1st Jim McNeill (16) 39pts
2nd John O’Donaghue (16) 38pts
3rd Fergus Brennan (13) 35pts
Thursday, July 18, Phoenix (Mountain & Lakes) – Stableford
Richard Talbot ran past all the rest of the competitors today to break the tape in first place. In a very close race Peer Brun came second and last week’s winner Roger Wilkinson was third.

Richard Talbot - winner at Phoenix.

1st Richard Talbot (19) 38pts
Peer Brun (12) 37pts
Roger Wilkinson (12) 36pts
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like to play a round of golf with the TRGG please phone Fergus Brennan on 086 056 7019 or pop into the Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee and add your name to the weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.

Knight jump starts the week with an ‘Ace’

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Tim Knight celebrates his Hole-in-One with the Outback Staff.

Monday, July 15, Burapha C & D - Stableford
We should start with the big story of the day, which is Tim Knight’s “Hole in One” on D2, where he slam-dunked his nine-iron for a massive 5 points, hoisting himself to first place in the process with 39pts and scooping all the ‘2’s money to the disappointment of the five players who all had ‘2’s. He (Tim) made up for it though, as he rang the bell to celebrate his Ace.
36 Outbackers played the C and D loops in perfect weather on a course with some brutal rough but otherwise in great condition but for a change the scores in all of the divisions were much the same.
Kiwi Geoff Christie, despite being cut from 6 to 5 as he has been playing so well since his arrival, won Div A by two with 40pts from Jim Brackett with 38. Peter Nixon (35pts) took third beating Alex Graham, having his first round here for some time, on count back (and welcome back Alex and Peter).
Quite what Steve Poznanski is doing in Div B we shall never know but he made the most of dropping down a division, winning with 38pts from newcomer to the Outback, Paul Cain in second on 36. The other two podium places in this division went to no strangers to such heights, John O’ Keefe (35) and Steve Mann (32).
As written at the beginning of this story, Div C was won by Tim Knight followed home by Bob Linborg (36), Barry McIntosh (34) and Jim Payne (32).
Div A (0-12)
1st Geoff Christie (5) 40pts
2nd Jim Brackett (8) 38pts

4th Alex Graham (9) 35pts
Div B (13-18)
1st Steve Poznanski (14) 38pts
2nd Paul Cain (15) 36pts
3rd John O’Keefe (14) 35pts
4th Stephen Mann (13) 32pts
Div C (19+)
1st Tim Knight (23) 39pts
2nd Bob Lindborg (20) 36pts
3rd Barry McIntosh (20) 34pts
4th Jim Payne (27) 32pts
Tuesday, July 16, Phoenix Mountain & Lakes - Stableford
Taking some time off at last from all the renovations going on at the Outback, General Jack donned his golfing gear and headed off to Phoenix for a spot of R & R. Eleven other players made up the field on what turned out to be a very damp start with some persistent rain for the first three holes, which cleared away for most of the round only for light rain to return towards the end.
The course was in great nick and the greens excellent but it must be said that it was somewhat surprising that they allowed carts on the course but good news to learn that you can still share carts there, whatever the weather.
John Lawton played 15 holes of very steady bogey golf, which included a couple of very good putts, picked up two doubles and one par for his 38pt total to win the day, beating the in-form Geoff Christie by three. Nev was beaten on count back by Geoff on the same 35pts, and there was one ‘2’, also from Geoff on the 16th.
1st John Lawton (21) 38pts
2nd Geoff Christie (5) 35pts
3rd Nev Steward (22) 35pts
Wednesday, July 15, Siam Plantation – Stableford
The turn of the A & C nines at Siam Plantation today with 15 players in attendance.
The scoring was once again exceptionally good with New York Steve leading the way with 40pts off the very generous handicap (for him) of 14. Kiwi, Geoff Christie has enjoyed his fortnight or so’s golfing holiday playing to a very high standard and today he continued the run with 39pts (gross 74) to find himself in second only to have to dash off to his hotel to pack as he flew back that night. Andre Coetzee is no stranger to this course and was here on one of his flying visits and apparently struck the ball very well for his 37pts beating Ji Smith on count back.
Steve Mann got the only ‘2’.
1st Steve Poznanski (14) 40pts
2nd Geoff Christie (5) 39pts
3rd Andre Coetzee (7) 37pts
4th Jim Smith (12) 37pts
Wednesday, July 17, Eastern Star – Stableford
A disappointing turnout for golf of only 9 players on the last day of the three NRL State of Origin games between Queensland and New South Wales, with this one being the decider – not that it detracted any excitement from the match which was shown live at the Outback later in the day, particularly for Sugar!
The course was reported to be quite wet but otherwise OK with Paul Greenaway taking most of the honours, winning with 35pts and getting the only ‘2’ (on the 3rd).
1st Paul Greenaway (8) 35pts
2nd Dennis Pelly (12) 34pts
3rd John O’Keefe (14) 34pts
Friday, July 19, St. Andrews – Stableford
With most of our regulars playing in the PSC tournament at Green Valley, we were left with three groups at St Andrews, made up of mostly visitors. Welcome back to Mike Quill and Neil Herd and welcome also to a couple of Americans playing with the Outback for the first time, Ricky Visconte and Will Darling.
Quilly won the day with 40pts from Kev Watson (37), who turned up at the bar at the very last minute on Friday, looking for a game.
There were two ‘2’s from Mike Quill (5th) and Mark Kembrey (17th).
1st Mike Quill (21) 40pts
2nd Kev Watson (10) 37pts
3rd Ricky Visconte (9) 37pts

Quality floats to the top

IPGC golf from The Haven

Monday, July 15, The Emerald - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Markku Tynell (22) 37pts
2nd Allen Raaen (9) 37pts
3rd Hal Hart (20) 35pts
4th Peter Buckley (19) 34pts
5th Alwyne Burley (15) 33pts
6th Danny Greer (25) 33pts
7th Shuichi Kodaka (17) 33pts
After the short and extremely wet previous week it was good to get back to something like normal golf, although the competitions at The Emerald are still held under the special tournament rule of ‘lift and place’ in the fairways due to the infiltration of the fairways by crab grass and even though the course was still suffering from the effects of the rainy weather, the scores attested that the conditions were good.

Markku Tynell.

Markku Tynell started off what was to be a very good week with a win but needed to take the count back, which he did with an outstanding back-nine of four under handicap after starting slowly and thus consigning Allen Raaen to second place after scoring 17 to 22 from Markku. Markku finished off the round with a gross birdie four on the last hole that netted four of those points to seal the win which matched Allen’s birdie on the same hole but three dropped shots on the 17th for a zero return cost the latter the win.
Hal Hart continued with his recent steady play, taking third spot two behind the leaders but he also dropped points on the last three holes, taking just two points from them and waving goodbye to his chances of another win.

 Allen Raaen.

Peter Buckley had eight points after four holes with a blob on the third but kept at it to finish with seventeen points on both nines and take fourth place ahead of a three-way count back for fifth. This was won by Alwyne Burley whose 20 pushed Danny Greer down to sixth after he ended the inward half with 17 points, and Shuichi Kodaka seventh with 14, after he had looked a possible winner after nine.
Once again there were no 2’s in either division.
Wednesday, July 17, Bangpra - Stableford
CSS 73
Division 1 (0-15)
1st Graham Davis (8) 38pts
2nd Tom Britt (9) 34pts
3rd Mike Dabanovich (12) 31pts
Division 2 (16+)
1st Tom McCarthy (21) 33pts
2nd Don Everett (20) 31pts
3rd Markku Tynell (22) 29pts

Graham Davis.

A big turnout meant the formation of two divisions again with the cut coming at 15 and below for the first division as many of the old faces took the opportunity to play one of the best liked courses and the oldest in the area. It is never easy to score well here though and on this day the tees had been set well back with the shortest hole on the day measuring 184 yards on the card but playing even longer. A proper measurement of the length would have perhaps shown a course of around 6700 plus yards and therefore it was unsurprising that the CSS for the day moved out to 73.
This underlined the fine effort of Graham Davis whose 38 points took the first division top spot, and equated to three under handicap, to head a field that contained many single figure players.
Tom Britt one of those single handicap men took second place after staring slowly, scoring just one point on the first two holes, then settled down and finished strongly which left returnee Mike Dabanovich, who hadn’t seen a golf course for the last six weeks amongst the sand dunes, in third.
The second division found the course a much tougher proposition, with Tom McCarthy running out the winner after turning in a three over handicap return which was good enough by two. This was after he had started explosively with a par for four points on the first but then sadly took a zero on the par three second, as did many others on the day as they found the hole teed up at almost two hundred yards and a little too difficult to handle, in fact there was only one par recorded on it from the whole field.
Don Everett took second place ahead of Markku Tynell’s second podium finish for the week.
Both the ‘2’s pools grew in size as once more the very long par threes defeated everyone, refusing to give up any birdies.
Prior to the prize giving there were welcomes for new members Tom Britt, Russell Spratt from the USA, and also for Michael Marchant and Richard Dudley Smith from OZ holidaying in Thailand and playing golf trying to forget all other sports for the time being but were very pleased to have the opportunity to at least view the urn once again.
Friday, July 19, Plutaluang N & W - Stableford
CSS 72
Division 1 (0-15)
1st Allen Raaen (9) 38pts
2nd Russell Spratt (8) 37pts
3rd Tom Britt (9) 37pts
Division 2 (16+)
1st Hal Hart (20) 34pts
2nd Mick Bogunovich (32) 32pts
3rd Markku Tynell (22) 31pts
The first division was led in today by Allen Raaen with his second round under handicap for the week but he needed to finish strongly, which he did, scoring 20 points over the inward half to deny Russell Spratt his first win out of Soi 13 by a single point.
Russell took second after a count back over playing partner Tom Britt, which he won with a better 19 to 16 after Tom had scored freely on the opening nine but waned badly on the last four holes, claiming just three points from them. Also in contention was Graham Davis who had a very creditable two over round that showed no zeros, but unfortunately not enough threes.
Hal Hart bettered his previous podium placing by two as he won the second division with a steady two over handicap round which left Mike Bogunovich in second and Markku Tynell, placing for the third time in the week, in third.
At last both the ‘2’s pools were taken as Allen Raaen and Tom Britt shared the first and Shuichi Kodaka took the second division, negating the chances of the treasurer doing a bunk with a sack full of loot. Shuichi was quoted as saying he would now be able to stay a further four weeks this trip but Tom and Allen were too inebriated to give any interviews to the reporting staff who arrived late on the scene.
Back at The Haven, without the usual Emcee who was on his annual holidays for two days in Koh Chang, and possibly the reason that the numbers of players competing reached the highest level of the low season, Trevor Schirmer did the honours and announced the winners.
Having claimed the longest drive prize but then found he needed to share it with Al Rolnik and Terry Hodgkiss, he welcomed back Al Rolnik from an extended holiday in the USA together with Vincent Gras and Ron Kerslake from the Northern Territories, Mick Bogunovich from PI here for a short rest and Johnny Clements, taking time off from his singing tour of Thailand.
There were also farewells for John Carling, Peter Buckley, Tom Britt and Russell Spratt after which Trevor was looking distinctly parched but was well appreciated by the throng as opposed to the usual old stuff they were used to hearing.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Coetlee takes debut win at PSC 125th Monthly Tournament

Andre Coetzee - Low Gross winner (left) with Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham.

Report Nigel Cannon / Photos William Macey.
This month’s tournament was at the ever popular Green Valley Golf Club on Friday, July 19. Unusually, a shot-gun start was agreed with the buffet and presentation in the clubhouse after the rounds and the calculation of the results.
There was a field of 116 which should have been 120 but some members had location problems!
As this was a 10.30 a.m. start it meant all players arriving around the same time however with the experience of Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham and Social Chairman Nigel Cannon, together with the efficient administration of the PSC office staff, all registration went smoothly.

Eddie Beilby (left) - 50/50 winner.

The course was in its usual fine condition despite heavy overnight rain. It was perfect weather for golf, not too hot with a little breeze and all rounds completed in a little over 4 hours with some excellent scores submitted. With all cards coming in together it was Joe, Bob Linborg and Nigel calculating the results and noting the technical winners.
It was a new face for the low gross winner with Andre Coetlee (7) taking the honours with 76 gross. A Flight played stroke play and saw Paul Heyworth (9) claiming top spot with 69 Net. The best Stableford was the ‘B’ Flight winner Dennis Pelly (12) with a fine 43 points. Thirty nine points from Michael Jeffreys was enough to win ‘C’ Flight as was 40 points from Ed Hutchins (28) to take ‘D’ Flight.
The Silver winner was Peter Henshaw (16) with 36 points and in the Ladies Flight it was current PSC Champion Ning Neal (11) showing championship qualities with a fine 42 points.

Ed Hutchins (left) - winner in D Flight.

Following some refreshment and food from the buffet it was time for the presentation. Nigel welcomed all and introduced Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham who expressed his appreciation to all who played today and for the help from Nigel, William, Bob and Noy.
Joe then gave details of next month’s special Charity Tournament at Siam Plantation on Thursday 15th August, with a shotgun start at 12 noon with presentation and food at the clubhouse. Sign-up sheets are at the clubhouse – limited to 120 and all monies to be paid in advance.
Then it was back to Nigel to announce the winners, and Joe to present the prizes.
The lucky draw followed and then 50/50 draw with the first 2 tickets winning green fee vouchers for 4 persons at Green Valley and St Andrews kindly donated by Khun Niran, General Manager. The final ticket for the 50/50 was a good friend of PSC, Eddie Beilby.
Finally anyone who had not won a prize was given a Sports Day green fee voucher for Green Valley, again donated by Khun Niran.
As the members left there were many comments made to Joe on another fine tournament.

Paul Heyworth - winner in A Flight.

Nick Shaw – runner-up in C Flight.

Owen & Barry - near pin winners.

Ning Neal - Ladies winner.

Many ladies played and had a good time.

Sweetnam has a scorcher

Jomtien golf with the IPGC

Monday, July 15, Pleasant Valley - Stableford
This was our first visit here for some considerable time as we have avoided a couple of courses due to their price structures, but it was great value for the cost here today and everyone enjoyed the return.

Bill Bertram.

There were 29 players out in a two divisional stableford competition with the cut at 10 -17 in division 1 and 18+ plus in division 2, plus a pairs multiplier game with one person in division 1 and their partner in division 2.
We selected the blue tees today at 6,350 yards rather than the white at 5,830 but with scores coming in later we are not sure if some of the tees were slightly forward as there were no yardage markings on the tees.
Playing off 12, Jerry Sweetnam came in with 44 points to win division 1 ahead of Billy Fitzgerald (14) in second with 38 and Harry Vincenzi third after edging a back nine count back 17/15 against Lindsay Phillips, both on 37 points. There was a huge cheer at the presentation at Cats.
Eiichi Matsumoto beat Gordon Everingham on a 20/16 count back to top division 2 after both scored 37 points each and Alan Bissell was third with a measly 34 points.
Near pins went to Grenville Hill, Ted Morris, Neville Scurrell, Jerry Sweetnam, Andy Crabb, Gordon Everingham, Tony Holehouse and Burnie Sinclair.

Iain Walsh.

Harry Vincenzi birdied the 5th and Neville Scurrell the 8th to share the ‘2’s kitty in division 1 and there was only one winner in division 2 as Gordon Everingham notched a birdie on the 13th.
In the pairs multiplier event, an amazing 89 points was the winning score for Jerry Sweetnam and Gordon Everingham. Terry Madsen and Eiichi Matsumoto came second 20 points behind on 69 and in third place with 59 points were Grenville Hill and Glenn Martin. It was a tough pairs game and with the individual scores so high it was bemusing that the team scores apart from the winners were so low.
An enjoyable round was enjoyed by all and this course should be even better when we return here in four weeks time.
Wednesday, July 17, Plutaluang - Stableford
For something different we booked the East and South courses today and this was a pleasant change from our normal format here, the West and North nines. As we drove down towards the course the weather looked abysmal in the distance but we decided to carry on.

Roar Berger.

The Welsh boy David Phillips won division 2 with 36 points, beating Glenn Martin on an 18/15 back nine count back, with Schuamaker alias Pepo Frick in third place beating Andy Crabb on a 15/13 back nine count back after they both came in with 33 points.
Billy Fitzgerald was in the frame again, winning division 1 with 35 points and another Welsh boy was in the reckoning with Curtis Hessler coming second with 34. Lindsay Phillips completed the podium in third with 31.
Near pins were claimed by Billy Fitzgerald, Lindsay Phillips, Chris Voller, Andy Crabb, Glenn Martin and Mark Potton.
Billy Fitzgerald birdied the second on the East course and Chris Voller the fourth on the South to share the ‘2’s pot in division 1. Standing 140 yards out on the 6th on the East course, division 2’s Curtis Hessler hit a seven-iron into the hole for an unlikely ‘2’ and 5 points but as he approached the clubhouse he was told there were no prizes for a ‘2’ on a par four and the smile disappeared until later at Siam Cats when it was revealed we were winding him up.
Friday, July 19, Eastern Star - Stableford
A cool and constant breeze was coming off the coast today making it perfect playing conditions and this lasted for the whole round for all of the groups. The cut today was 10-17 and 18 plus in division 2 and Chris Voller won division 1 with 33 points and was well pleased with Jane his caddy (numbered 136) for all of her lines on the greens and general assistance as well. Bill Bertram came in second with 32 points and Harry Vincenzi was third with 31.
Iain Walsh topped division 2 with 32 points and Roar Berger beat his arch rival Rodney Howett 18/14 on the back nine as they both came in with 29 points.
Near pins went to Arthur Hancock, Harry Vincenzi, Karl Flood, Pepo Frick, Matty Swire and Iain Walsh.
Bill Bertram and Chris Voller birdied the 13th to share the ‘2’s pot in division 1 and with two rollovers in division 2 a birdie for Paul Hartley on the 17th gave him a nice bonus before his return home to work. See you in four weeks Paul!

Fantastic 40 puts Henry on top

PSC golf from The Golf Club

Henry O’Brien, Nigel Flanagan & Mike Allidi back at TGC.

Steve Ellison
Monday, July 15, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford
1st Henry O’Brien (18) 40pts
2nd Grant Cadell (14) 39pts
T3rd Nigel Flanagan (13) 38pts
T3rd Mike Allidi (3) 38pts
Firstly let’s take our hats off to Phil Mickelson on a tremendous back nine to surge to the lead at Muirfield and claim the elusive major he has worked so hard on. Philly, you deserved The Open title to add to your collection and we hope there are many more to come!
Now back to Pattaya and another strong turnout on Monday and it was nice to see some lads we haven’t seen in a while, and also a few visitors who joined in the fun.
Mike Allidi is back at the bar and it was good to have one of the best golfers in Pattaya join us today. Mike plays off 3, so he earns every point out there and today he shot well enough to score 38 points, which tied him for 3rd place.
The other 38 was from none other than Nigel Flanagan! Hey Nige, what the heck got into you today? This is one of the best rounds in awhile for the Flan Man and this rare podium appearance will probably go right to his head. He is starting to relax here now that nobody is shooting at him like it was in Afghanistan.
The hero of Khao Yai, Grant “Man of the Mountain” Cadell changed his cowboy hat for a Titleist cap to strut out to the course and register a very respectable 39 points on the card. When you shoot that well, you gotta be thinking you just might win this thing! Such was not to be the case as that legendary Scottish golfer Henry O’Brien slipped in the side-door with a fantastic 40 to claim the day, so well played to ya Hank!
Wednesday, July 17, Bangpra (white tees) – Stableford
1st Max Scott (4) 36pts
2nd Terry Wagner (18) 35pts
3rd Bob Watson (2) 34pts
3rd John Pierrel (12) 34pts
The ‘Monkey Course’ was back on the TGC golf schedule and the lads were ready for a great test of their skills at one of the best courses in Pattaya. You will never get a 42-point card turned in here… the greens are a killer so be prepared for a 3-putt or two.
John Pierrel, the travelling golfer, is back in town for the next 4 months so I would imagine you will be seeing his name on the leader-board several more times. Today he tied for third with 34 points. Bob Watson was the other 34-pointer to share the podium placing and it was good to see Bob join us again.
Stalwart Terry Wagner, fresh from his conquering of Kabinburi the previous week, continued his hot streak with a 35 point round, which is great for this course.
The honours for today must go to our old pal Max Scott who is a guy that knows the ins and outs of this wacky game. His handicap equaling 36 was the best of the day and Captain Phil handed Max the ‘Handsome Man’ vouchers in his happy pack to enjoy a few adult beverages with. Thanks for joining us for another great week of golf in the Kingdom!
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We try to schedule summer “Sports Days”, so come join us for a seriously fun day out. Just call 085 434 3377 or see our website www.golfclubpattaya.com   and for more information mail us: [email protected]  and see updates at www.facebook.com/golfclubpattaya...  all handicaps welcome!

The quiet approach pays off

The Backyard Golf Society

Martyn “The Quiet Man” of the Backyard Golf Society continued his recent good form on Friday, July 19, at Emerald, scoring 39 points to blitz the rest of the field by 4. His handicap has dropped by some 8 shots over the last 6 months so he is going along nicely.
We had 3 groups out today and for the first time we can remember we caught up the Beaver Bar boys by the 6th hole. This made for a slow back nine but still a fairly quick round overall, no point finishing too early and having to wait for the bars down the road to open.
Near-pin went to Jimmy 2 Stone on this occasion. Skins were well spread out; The Quiet Man won the single roll-over from the previous week plus 6 more this week. Irish John also won 6, Yaya’s Delight (we await the inevitable return of herself despite rumours of passports being acquired for yet another young lady!) won 3 and there were singles to Jimmy 2 Stone, the returning Dan ‘The Diet Whiskey Man’ and Golden Trowel’s Boyfriend.
Unlike other societies The Backyard Boys do not have a set meeting place but several members can usually be found attending the various Jomtien market bars most evenings and we had one of our infamous get-togethers there on Saturday to consume the large amassed sporting pool fund.

Fagerlund & Winfield the standouts at Greenwood PSC golf from Café Kronborg

Monday, July 15, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
Mountain shadow was the test today and after a swift check-in we were off the 10th tee 40 minutes early under partly cloudy skies with not much humidity and a good cooling breeze. The course was in fine condition with the greens cored last month now having fully recovered, while the other half were being done as we played.
We got around in 3 hours and 50 minutes as the course was empty in front of us all the way around.
Dave Richardson (H/cap 24) was the winner with a steady 37 points, ahead of Mike Winfield (22) in second on 29 points and Lasse Pettersson (30) third with just 25 points.
Thursday, July 18, Greenwood A & C – Stableford
Greenwood was the game today with the first group teeing off C1 25 minutes early under sunny skies and a nice breeze all day. The course was in fine condition except some of the greens which were a bit scratchy but still a lot of putts were made.
The course was empty ahead of us so we got around in a record 3 hours and 30 minutes. Back in the clubhouse welcomes went out to the Gottschalck family from Denmark; son Soren, mom Alice and dad Flemming, also welcomes to Peter Fagerlund, Petter Airikainen, Soren Lingkuirst and Kelle Nord Mark, all from Sweden.
The winner was Peter Fagerlund (17) on a count back from Mike Winfield (22) in second, both with 40 points. Lasse Pettersson (30) took third on another count back from Dave Richardson (24) as they both tied on 37 points each.

Aussies find form in challenge match warm-up

The Billabong Bar Golf Society

(From left to right): Jason Barnett, Mel McGowan, Eng Cotterell and ‘Squeaky’ Cleverley.

Friday, July 19, Crystal Bay - Stableford
What a great day for golf - not too hot and an overcast sky, just fantastic! With 6 groups playing at Crystal Bay A and B off the whites for a change, the course was in good condition apart from all the sprinkler heads which were leaking like sieves and it made for some sloppy walking unless you made a very large detour.
We welcomed the boys from Australia who were in town for their annual match against the Caddyshack, and they seemed to be on their game as they took four of the top five places. The only ones from the Billabong who got close was Eng Cotterell while Kiwi Bill got knocked off on a count back for fourth by Mel McGowan, both on 35 points. Third place went to the aforementioned lady Eng, second place to Ian (Squeaky) Cleverley with 39 points and first was taken by Jason Barnett with a fabulous 71 gross for 42 points off his six-handicap.
Jason also got the only ‘2’of the day and the word was he was buying the grog for the night. We will see you again for another hit before you go home boys good luck in your tournament.
Note: The Billabong golf bar is situated just off Siam Country Club Road looking straight down Lake Maprachan. Give Bob a call on 082 204 3411.

Phil Mickelson – how good is he, really?

This was a master-class in links golf. In fact, it may well come to be regarded as one of the best final rounds in major championship history – yes it was that good.
Golf is regarded by many as sport’s most stringent test of character. Winning the battle of the back-nine in a major is its ultimate test. Some six weeks back, at the US Open in Merion, the still-winless Mickelson couldn’t get the job done, finishing runner-up for the 6th time. That result, coming after he had held the 54-hole lead, hurt more than any other. Now this, a Claret Jug after two decades of trying, is redemption indeed.
Starting the day five shots behind leader Lee Westwood, Mickelson shot a 5-under par 66 to finish on 3-under – the only player in red figures. Runner-up Henrik Stenson shot a 1-under par round of 70 to finish even par. All others were over par. Mickelson’s winning margin, taking into account his starting position, confirmed just how good his closing round had been.
Make no mistake; Muirfield had most of the world’s best golfers intimidated. Overnight leader Lee Westwood managed just one fairway hit on his front nine, despite hitting irons off the tee. In the preceding group, Tiger Woods and Adam Scott also appeared to be too mindful of Muirfield’s threats, especially Woods. Further up, Stenson and Ian Poulter, in particular, were mounting some sort of charge, but Poulter’s starting position of 5-over par proved too much.
Then there was Phil.
On that course, in those conditions, competing against a star-studded leader board for a trophy he has coveted for 20 years, the fearlessness with which he executed his shots was staggering. His back-nine score of 32 may come to be regarded as one of the best in Open Championship history.
Mickelson has often been criticised for his gung-ho attitude in shot selection when contesting major championships in the past. But as he said on Sunday at Muirfield, “I wanted to go out and win it. I didn’t want someone to gift it to me.” And that is exactly what happened. No one took to the course like Mickelson did in that last round. His 4-under par stretch over the closing six holes was outrageous in its audacity as well as its execution.
After so many years trying to master links golf, Mickelson must feel some pride in what he has achieved. “I did enjoy links golf when I first played at the Walker Cup in ’91 at Portmarnock,” he said. “It was a wonderful test. But the conditions and the penalty for missed shots in the Open are much more severe than when we played then. And it took me a while to figure it out, I would say. It’s been the last eight or nine years I’ve started to play it more effectively.”
“I’m playing some of the best golf of my career,” he went on to say. “This is the best I have ever putted. Today would be one of the most memorable rounds I have ever played. It’s probably the greatest and most difficult win of my career. It is great to be part of any Open Championship and to win at Muirfield feels amazing.”
Where then does this win place Phil Mickelson amongst the golfing greats?
With five majors to his name, Mickelson now joins the likes of Seve Ballesteros, Peter Thompson and Byron Nelson. This Open win gives Mickelson the third leg of a career Grand Slam. That leaves just the US Open to clinch for him to become only the sixth player in history to win all four major titles. At 43 years of age time is against him, but Pinehurst GC, the site of next year’s US Open waits.
That Muirfield’s Roll of Honour includes the best golfers to have played the game is well known – it only allows in the greats. “Lefty’s” performance during the last round of the 142nd Open demands his inclusion into Muirfield’s most august list of golf’s super-stars.
Happy golfing!

A roaring success: 2013 Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek

Oi! on her way to seven wins from eight races, and winner of IRC Racing I.

Winds gusting to 20 knots made for a perfect end to what turned into one of the best Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek’s yet, sailed from July 17-21. The weather conditions delivered fast and exciting racing throughout and after four days, the sailors of more than 15 nationalities were tired and happy.
Two races for all except the Classic class made for a hectic schedule of racing on the final day and with some classes on the edge, there was plenty still to play for.
Wan Ma Rang in IRC Racing I, improving throughout, had their best day yet closing out the regatta with two second places. However, it wasn’t enough to overhaul Katsu who has sailed consistently well and held onto second place by three points.
Class honours went to Australian Peter Ahern and his all-star crew on Oi! who with seven wins from eight races, were untouchable. Formerly Team Premier, Peter Ahern/ Scott Bailey/ Fergus Wilmer recently bought the boat, renamed her Oi! and Phuket Raceweek was their first competitive event. Having got some early points on the board in the 2013/14 Asian Yachting Grand Prix Championship, Oi! now heads to Hong Kong to compete on the circuit.

Startline action in IRC Cruising on the final day of Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek 2013.

IRC Racing II was dominated by fellow Australian Peter Sorensen and his crew on Fujin, and that domination continued through to the final race. Eight wins from eight races speaks for itself and as sailing star Steve McConaghy, who was racing onboard the former Ichi Ban, said, “you could sail this thing backwards and still win.”
The final day’s battle, however, was for second and third in the class, between Stuart Williamson’s Skandia Endeavour of Whitby and Neils Degenkolw’s Phoenix. Despite struggling with their starts and being called OCS on more than one occasion, a good performance on the final day for Williamson and his crew (a 2,3 scoreline), saw them secure second overall and relegate Phoenix to third.
Having completed one race per day, the great winds on the last day saw Principal Race Officer Simon James set two races for IRC Cruising and Irish entry Windstar, helmed by Peter Woods, revelled in the conditions to finish the last day with two more wins, and win the class by four points.
The doggedly-determined Aussie team, Rob Azzopardi’s Dreamtime, with two second placings on the final day, could not overhaul the leaders and had to stay in second place overall, four points back. Mike Crisp, helming Sail in Asia Venture, who was introduced to a rocky outcrop on the third day – to be hauled off by the obliging press corps – finished third overall on 11 points.

Fujin on course for another win in IRC Racing II.

The super-fast Firefly 850 sport catamarans, all built in Phuket, thrived in the strong winds all week, with competitors recording speeds in excess of 20 knots (37 km/h). Reading the conditions best and sailing consistently was Twin Sharks, skippered by Briton John Newnham, who didn’t contend the last race having already won seven from seven and a clear class winner.
However, second and third was a much closer battle, between Hans Rahmann’s Voodoo and Roger Kingdon’s Moto Inzi. Voodoo came into the final day with a slight edge and a 2,1 scoreline on-the-day saw them complete a strong series and place second ahead of Moto Inzi by a single point.
The Multihull Racing class saw a remarkable come-back by Phuket sailor/ designer, Mark Pescott, with a second and a first in the last races, to go into the clear as Multihull Racing class winner, helming DaVinci (12 points), and defend their title by just one point ahead of the week’s leader, Alan Carwadine’s Asia Catamarans Hurricane who had to settle for second overall. Then came another early leader, John Coffin’s Java, third, on 16 points.

The end of the Classic class was as expected, continuing the week-long pattern, with Simon Morris’ Sirius (three points) at the front, Laurie Piper’s Atlanta (seven) in second and the German maxi classic, Letizia, skippered by Capt. Bernd Gundel (eight), third. Perennial regatta entry, Captain Bao’s Seraph was relegated to fourth place, although equalling Letizia on eight points.
While the Aussies took home a lot of silverware at this year’s regatta, what was noticeable was the large number of top boats from Ao Chalong Yacht Club, both winners and high scoring performers.
A lavish Gala Dinner hosted by Cape Panwa Hotel brought to a close a highly successful 10th Anniversary Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek.

Local tennis starlet has eyes on the big time

Pattaya rising tennis star Thitirat Kanaphuet wins five medals in three weeks

Thitirat Kanaphuet poses with her certificates and medals following her success in the recent junior tournament in Udon Thani.

You may not have heard the name before but Thitirat Kanaphuet is currently making plenty of waves in the local and national junior tennis scene. This 12-year old girl has only been playing tennis for less than three years but is already making her mark on the Thai national rankings LTAT, now ranking at 38 in the under-14’s and soon to increase this with her recent win in Udon Thani, where she got a gold medal in the under-14’s and a silver in the under-16’s.
Thitirat also recently won a gold medal in Phitsanulok and followed that up with a silver and bronze in Bangkok, often competing against girls several years her senior.

Thitirat’s medal from a Toyota Rising Young Stars of Tennis event.

Thitirat has received a great deal of help from her coaches, Mong and Tee, who are both leading Chonburi tennis trainers. She also boosts her fitness by working out with her personal fitness trainer Louie sun. She trains hard every day and gets full support from her school Wuttichot Bilingual, which is an international school on Sukhumvit Road.
All this support is helping her take small but important steps on her path to fulfilling her dream of becoming a professional tennis player and to one day winning the Pattaya Open and Wimbledon. Her idol has always been Roger Federer but she also likes to follow the fortunes of her current favourites Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.
Thitirat said after her recent on the road successes, “It’s been a perfect three weeks me and I will remember these three weeks forever.”
Thitirat will continue to travel all over Thailand to take part in various competitions and will also start competing internationally once she turns 13 and is able to graduate to a full ITF junior member.
We wish her every success and will make a point to remember the name, Thitirat Kanaphuet - it could just be flashing up on a Wimbledon scoreboard in the not too distant future.

14-year old boy wins Hua Hin Open golf tournament

Pachara Khongwatmai (center) is flanked by his parents as he poses with the champion’s trophy following his victory in the Singha Hua Hin Open at Royal Hua Hin Golf Course, Sunday, July 21.

Andrew J Wood
A 14-year-old Thai lad became the youngest male to win a major professional golf tournament last weekend with a stunning display that left players twice his age trailing in his wake.
Pachara Khongwatmai, who was given the week off school to play in the Singha Hua Hin Open on the ASEAN PGA Tour, marched to a four-stroke victory with a final round four-under-par score of 67 at the Royal Hua Hin Golf Course.
The youngster, who led by two at the start of the day, finished with a four-round aggregate of 13-under to head a formidable field, which listed most of his country’s top players including Prom Meesawat and Prayad Marksaeng.
Japan’s Ryo Ishikawa had previously held the record as youngest winner - he was 15 years old when he won the 2007 Munsingwear Open KSB Cup on the Japan Golf Tour Organisation.
Pachara began playing golf when he was nine and practices each day after class. He said after his win, “The first thing I need to do is call my friends and catch up on my homework.”

Ostospa too strong as United lose in Saraburi

Pattaya United’s return to Thai Premier League action on Saturday, July 20, resulted in disappointment for travelling Dolphin supporters as they saw their team lose 2-1 away at Osotspa M-150 FC in Saraburi.
Following a goalless first half in which United had arguably the better of the few chances created, the home team broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute when Chananan Pombuppha beat the Pattaya offside trap before rounding the keeper and calmly slotting the ball into an empty net.
Worse was to follow soon after for the visitors when Osotspa doubled their lead in the 65th minute: United keeper Chanin could only parry a close range header from Moura into the path of Ostospa defender Kosawat Wongwailikit who nodded the ball home from 3 yards out.
Pattaya gave themselves a late lifeline back into the game through a fine individual goal from their S. African forward Makhosonke Bhengu in the 83rd minute but it proved to be no more than a consolation as time ran out for the visitors who were consigned to their fourteenth defeat of the season.
With defending champions Muang Thong United having a free weekend, both Buriram and Chonburi failed to take advantage of their rival’s inaction as they were held to away draws at Bangkok Glass and Army United respectively.
Meanwhile it seems that Sisaket FC, who have only competed in three games this season, could face the prospect of automatic relegation as the club continues an ownership battle in the courtroom. Thai Premier League president Vichit Yamboonruang said earlier this month, “Given Sisaket’s inability to play, we may have no choice but to demote them to Division One next season. We might nullify the results of three matches they played, but we have to consider this matter again in order to ensure fairness for every team.”
If results are nullified the three teams affected would be Muang Thong United, Chainat FC and Songkhla United.
Pattaya United’s next Premier League fixture is on Sunday, Aug. 4 away at Army United. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Bon Chance to Thai lawn bowlers

The Thai “Para” players pose with their coaches at the Coco Club Resort in Pattaya prior to flying off to South Africa for the World Transplant Games taking place from July 28 - Aug 4 2013.

Just 3 months after starting to play the game of lawn bowls, the Thai “Para” players had their final workout with an intra competition at Coco Club Resort in Pattaya before attending the World Transplant Games where lawn bowls has been included for the first time.
Under the watchful eyes of the top three Thai ladies singles players for 2013, the inspirational and excitable group, most of whom have received kidney transplants, had a good day and now head for Durban in South Africa to play against 55 other countries - we wish them well.

Kenya’s Kariuki wins 2013 Pattaya Marathon

Joseph Kariuki of Kenya celebrates with arms aloft as he crosses the finish line to win the 2013 King’s Cup Pattaya Marathon, Sunday, July 21. African athletes filled the top seven positions in the men’s division and the women’s race was also won by a Kenyan athlete, but the event was more a celebration of spirit and fortitude as runners of all ages and nationalities took to Pattaya’s streets to face their own personal sporting challenges. Kenyan runners continued their dominance of high-profile long distance events in SE Asia, taking the top seven places in the 2013 Pattaya Marathon held last weekend.
Joseph Kariuki, winner of the inaugural Yangon marathon in Myanmar earlier this year, was again first past the post here in Pattaya and took the title and 200,000 THB in the July 21 race with a net time of 2:20:29 to finish over a minute ahead of compatriot Weldon Kiruri in second.
Kenyan Rose Chekurui Kosgei placed first in the women’s category and 17th overall with a time of 2:42:41. Her husband, Robert Kosgei finished sixth, beating his spouse by about 18 minutes.
The top Thai runner, Bunthong Srisang, finished eighth with a net time of 2:33:29. He took home a purse of 70,000 THB.
Culture Minister Sonthaya Kunplome led a delegation of local and national government and tourism officials to kick off the 16th Pattaya Marathon and send the runners on their way at 4:30 a.m. from the start line opposite the Central Beach shopping mall on Pattaya Beach Road.

Mayor Ittipol Kunplome congratulates Rose Chekurui Kosgei (left) and Joseph Kariuki (right), winners of the women’s and men’s divisions at the 2013 King’s Cup Pattaya Mararthon.

Despite continued organizational problems in the lead up to this year’s marathon, the event was well attended by both local and international runners of all ages and sizes and unlike some previous editions, the rain mercifully held off and the athletes were able to complete the course in dry conditions.
In the half marathon event, honours were shared around the local runners with Thais being the only nationality eligible to win cash in the contest. There the winner was Sanchai Namkhet with a time of 1:11:19 while Nattaya Thonaramwat won the women’s half-marathon race with a time of 1:25:16. Both took home 40,000 THB each.
In the quarter marathon, two-time champ Nattawuth Innum from Gym Running took first place in both the overall and the 14-19 years division with a time of 36:58 seconds, while in the female division, the winner was Suphatcha Suwanbumrung from Khon Kaen with a time of 46:02 seconds.

Nattawut Innum (left), from the Gym Running team, accepts HM the King’s Cup from Mayor Ittipol after successfully defending his quarter marathon title for the second year.

The wheelchair marathon was won by last year’s champ and London 2012 Paralympic athlete, Prawat Wahoram. He beat out 13 others to win with a time of 1:40:50.
The 3.5-kilometer students race was won by Phuriphat Boranphul from the Air Force Team with a time of 12 minutes and 40 seconds. The top girl finisher was Chutika Thungthong from Samut Prakan with a time of 14 minutes and 24 seconds.
Winners of all the main categories received trophies for their efforts, presented by Pattaya Mayor Ittiphol Kunplome and other local dignitaries.
