Blacky & Woody on top at Bangpakong
PSC Golf from The Growling Swan

Peter Blackburn, Wendy Bernek
& Frank Donnelly.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, April 1, Bangpakong – Stableford
Once again we had an excellent turnout of 38 golfers despite a couple of
late withdrawals and we were all anticipating another great day at one of
our favourites, Bangpakong Riverside Golf Club.
As we assembled at the GS for yet another early start, we welcomed PSC
Social Chairman Nigel Cannon, Eric “Judge” Black from Geelong in Victoria,
Jerry Dobbs from Australia, Nid from Bangkok, Gordon Clegg from Saudi Arabia
and Gary Williams & Jason Hann from Melbourne. It was also great to see
Richard & Carole Kiubicki with us once more but sadly they will soon be
returning to the UK & Cyprus after four months of golfing here in Pattaya.
When we arrived at the golf course things were quiet so we were able to send
our first four-ball away just 10 minutes later than scheduled at 9.40 am on
a hot morning where water intake was going to be essential.
As for the condition of the course, some of the fairways have many dry spots
and early morning watering resulted in a few soggy areas but the greens were
as usual magnificent and all in all the course was as much a delight to play
as ever.
As mentioned earlier, it was quite hot with not much of a breeze but we
managed to get through the front nine in two hours & ten minutes. There was
no-one directly in front of us all day so we were able to maintain a
reasonable pace, although as it got very hot a quick stop after the 11th
green was needed and we completed the round in four hours & twenty five
minutes.

Mike Gosden, Peter Grey &
Alain Taddei.
As the results came in afterwards it was
quite remarkable that the A Grade golfers found the course very much to
their liking as anything under 40 points did not get in the first seven!
We were able to have 2 Grades with seven podium spots in each. A Grade was
for handicaps 0 to 19 and B Grade for 20 and over. We had nearest the pins
on all the par threes and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
It was your writer, Peter Blackburn that had a “day out” by winning the A
Grade section with 44 points, just one ahead of Peter Bye in second place
and Brad “Bad” Todd third with 42 points. It was a pleasure to watch some
great golf as one of my partners, Richard “Tricky Dicky” Kubicki (24 point
back nine) made par on every hole on the back nine and took fourth spot on a
count back from Ebrahim (19 point back nine), with both having 41 points.
There was another count back for sixth & seventh place with Wayne Harman (23
point back nine) beating Paul Hack (18 point back nine) after both carded 40
points.
Being unable to find his clubs or caddy prior to teeing off did not deter
Frank “Woody” Donnelly who easily won the B Grade with 43 points, 4 points
ahead of the “adequately lubricated” Jerry Dobbs in second spot (don’t know
how these guys do it!). Dave Neal finished third with 38 points and Carole
Kubicki was fourth on 35 points.
Deciding fifth & sixth places was a drawn out affair which resulted in the
count back determining that fifth place went to Thientong Charoenrung (17
point back nine, 11 points on the last 6 holes, 7 points on the last 3 holes
and 3 points on the last hole) from J C Lhoste (17 point back nine, 11
points on the last 6 holes, 7 points on the last 3 holes and 2 points on the
last hole) – both had 34 points. Two players had 33 points and Duangjai
“Kae” Tusagad (19 point back nine) won the count back for seventh spot from
Rita Zoebelli (17 point back nine).

It was also time to declare the Golfer of the Month Award for March, 2013.
The award is determined by the highest total of a golfer’s top four
stableford scores for the month, so obviously a minimum of four games must
be played. Results were as follows:
1st Duangjai “Kae” Tusagad 155pts
2nd Suparp “Anna” Korboon 146pts
3rd Mike Gosden 145pts
The Growling Swan NAGA Award (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score
on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won by Wendy
Bernek and adhering to instructions from her absent husband Ken she
gracefully donned the cap and posed for the photo. Martin Todd took Deefa
for the usual walk and collected many donations for the needy in Pattaya
from our ever generous Growling Swan golfers.
Thursday, April 4, Treasure Hill – Stableford
Two late inclusions compensated for the two no-shows, which left us with a
good field of 33 golfers ready to take the journey to the always challenging
Treasure Hill Golf Course.
Hearty welcomes were handed out to first timer Neil Hurst from Oxford in the
UK and veteran Ted Morris joining us once more. We were sadly saying
farewell to Brian “Doc” Vale and Wayne Harman who will shortly be returning
to Perth and Gary Williams & Jason Hann who are off back to Melbourne in the
next few days.
We departed the GS in three mini vans right on time at 8.30 am and headed
off up No. 7 and then 331, which as usual was very busy and the usual long
delays at traffic lights were encountered which caused our journey to take
55 minutes. We arrived to find the venue almost deserted and after
successfully “haggling” over the Green Fee price for a couple of minutes we
settled in and were invited to the first tee at our leisure.
Our first group, a four-ball, teed off five minutes ahead of schedule at
9.55 am in hot and sticky conditions and we knew we were going to be in for
a hot one so water intake (stronger liquids for some) was going to be
essential.
The golf course was looking very good with the greens at times quite slick
although several had residual sand on them but certainly nothing to complain
about. As the course was extremely quiet we proceeded at a relaxing pace and
after pausing a couple of times for sit down drinks we completed the round
in four hours and twenty five minutes. It had been a very enjoyable round
with our four scoring reasonably well but certainly enjoying each other’s
company.
We were able to have 2 Grades with six podium spots in each. A Grade was for
handicaps 0 to 17 and B Grade for 18 and over. We had nearest the pins on
all the par threes and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
The winner of A Grade with a fine 40 points was Mike “Hunter” Gosden, with
Peter Bye 4 points further back in second place. In a count back for third &
fourth with 2 golfers on 35 points it was Neil Hurst (18 point back nine)
who just pipped Bill McGarvie (16 point back nine). On 34 points Suparp
“Anna” Korboon finished fifth with your writer, Peter Blackburn 1 point
further back in sixth spot.
Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei won the B Grade with 37 points and Graham
“Grunter” Buckingham was second with 34 points. With 2 people on 33 points a
count back saw Colin Faraday (20 point back nine) pinch third spot from
Brian “Doc” Vale (13 point back nine) and Gordon Clegg was fifth with 31
points. There were three golfers on 29 points vying for the last spot on the
podium and it was Sandy “Leiperfrog” Leiper (18 point back nine) who scraped
in over Brad “Bad” Todd (14 point back nine) and Duangjai “Kae” Tusagad (13
point back nine”.

The Growling Swan NAGA Award was narrowly won by Growling Swan Mine Host,
Peter Grey, who although accepting the award in fine spirit as he always
does did actually attempt to persuade the “Captain” to “manipulate” things
to achieve a different outcome. This was never going to happen of course and
Peter wore the NAGA Cap with distinction for a considerable amount of time
afterwards.
Martin Todd took Deefa for the usual walk and collected many donations for
the needy in Pattaya from our ever generous Growling Swan golfers.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low &
high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play
Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker Bar)
in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at 8.30 am. For
bookings or more information please contact Peter on 0806 351 386 or email

Parish wins by six at Khao Kheow
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Tuesday winners Brian Parish & Carole Kubicki
with one of Bert’s staff.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, March 2, Khao Kheow – Stableford
It is always a bit boring reading these write-ups when
all you really want is to know who won, or the last page, so for a change we
will give the results first and then go into all the boring stuff later on.
After all, the winners only read it when they win, so for a change it will
be nice to get it over with, especially as Carole Kubicki is on her way home
soon and we will all then be able to win.
So in the A Flight, 0 to 18, the winner was Brian Parish with 39 points
ahead of a count back on 33 points that saw Landis Brooks in second, Mark
West in third and Mashi just missing out.

Friday winners Bill McGarvie &
Mick Coghlan.
In the B Flight the winner was Carole
Kubicki with 37 points ahead of a count back on 36 points that saw Derek
Brook in second and Andre Van Dyk in third. Just think, if it had been next
week I would have won. Yes, age has caught up and I have slipped into the
group of players with character, grey hair and paunches. Woe is me.
Rubbish over, let’s get to the really interesting things. It was really hot
out there, the course was in good condition and we had a good round playing
the B & C Nines. That’s about all for the course, except they are sanding
the A Nine, as we have played it before. Oh by the way, it is a really good
course here with a friendly staff.
I won’t go on about the traffic on the way back , that is normal, but I must
say on the way back, living on Beach Road, I was reminded of the ongoing
‘Saga of Beach Road’ and the number of times I have seen major disruption
there. Dig it up, fix it, wait a while and dig it up again. Then block up
the town for a sing song or party or such for days. Over the years it has
proved better comedy than a TV programme.
Now they are building a third lane I am advised, when all they really need
to do is stop anyone parking on the road and they have three lanes. Change
direction from Pattaya Klang to Pattaya Nua and all the busses can stop and
let the passengers off, so no sheep on the road and a shepherd not deeded.
Well I feel better now and next week normal service will be resumed.
Near Pins: Brian Parish (2), Landis Brooks, Mark West
Friday, April 5,
The Emerald – Stableford
Another regular on the schedule, we usually nip down here once in a month.
No problems here except when we finish it is usually very difficult to get
all the players back to Bert’s in time for the results. Wonder where they
get to? Indeed, we have our groups who usually join us for the day out.
On this day we had a good turnout and were soon at the course. We could have
got away a bit sooner than we did as the starter tried to get us away,
however we did mislay one of the buses, still we did get away a bit early
and made good speed.
The course was in good condition, but we had the normal hot weather albeit
with a nice wind to cool us down.
Round over it was back to Bert’s for the results. In the A Flight, 0 to 18,
the winner was Bill McGarvie with 38 points ahead of a count back on 37
points that saw Landis Brooks in second and Mark West in third.
In the B Flight the winner was Mick Coghlan with 36 points on count back
over Andre Van Dyk in second. In third was Graham Buckingham with 35 points.

April Fools revenge
Phoenix Members Golf Society

Tuesday’s winners pose for a
photo at The Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
The previous day, April 1, young Patrick Browne tried his hardest to con
most of us with a couple of his April Fools gags. Well he may not have
succeeded in that ploy but he gained his revenge today with the only subpar
score. He carded 38 points to win the Ann’s Salon voucher plus the usual
first prize.
In second place was Stuart Gordon, thanks mainly to his superb short game
(we won’t mention some of the other shots), with 34 points, and with the
same score but a better back nine from our benefactor today was Richard
Baldwin (his lady donates the salon voucher)
Near pin prizes were awarded to Richard Baldwin, Jim Neilson, Goort Gelten
&Peter Harris (as a lucky draw). Other lucky draw prizes (donated by our
hosts The Relax Bar) went to John Bartley and the scribe; both of these were
a travesty really as both John and myself carded the worst scores of the
day.
Although the weather is getting hot and sometimes humid we are graced most
of the time at Phoenix with a nice sea breeze coming in from the ocean,
which makes the temperatures a little more bearable. Nevertheless, the first
couple of drinks back at The Relax Bar are always downed quite quickly.
We are now playing every Tuesday and Friday at approximately 11.30 a.m. and
non members can enjoy a walk-in fee of 800 baht on a Tuesday and 1,000 baht
on a Friday.
Sea fishing is also one of our pastimes and anyone interested in either golf
or fishing can contact me (Mike) on 087 091 7565 for further information.

John Hughes cleans up
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society

Sunday’s winners: John Hughes
(left) with Dave Driscoll.
Sunday, March 31, Green Valley -
Stableford
A Flight
1st John Hughes (10) 38pts
2nd Gary Blackburne (9) 38pts
B Flight
1st Dave Driscoll (15) 37pts
2nd Mick Beresford (18) 37pts
Near Pins: No 4 John Hughes, No 9 Pat Reagan, No 12 John Hughes, No
16 Mo Lamkin.
A couple of old dogs tied for the man of the match, well the first of our
entitled ‘old dogs’, as regular Pattaya visitor John Hughes locked scores
with Garry Blackburne, both on 38 points. John, who has returned for one of
his many trips to the Land of Smiles from his native Oldham, UK, made it
worthwhile with his narrow count back 20-19 win over everybody’s nice guy
Garry. He also pocketed 2 near pins.
A count back was required in B Flight as well between big hitting Dave
Driscoll and our beloved Mickey Beresford, both locked in mortal count back
on 37 points; Dave took it while Mickey was in a trance.
This month we have introduced a quality lead crystal whiskey glass for the
golfer of the month. In a very close run affair between Freddy Starbeck and
Kevin ‘guess who’ McEntee, the golfer of the month committee adjudged the
Co. Offaly Gang boss Kevin the winner.
Jim Bell, Dave Driscoll and Mo Lamkin shared the 2’s pot.
Monday, April 1, Crystal Bay A&B - Stableford
1st Takeshi Hakozaki (12) 41pts
2nd Les Cobban (10) 39pts
3rd John Hughes (10) 39pts
It doesn’t seem possible that it is the 1st of April but that is what the
schedule said as the society took on Crystal Bay. The field is always a bit
more modest on the second day of the society’s back-to-back features and
this Monday was no exception.
Japan’s Takeshi Hakozaki, always a pleasant addition to the society’s ranks,
made the visit a pleasant one as he fashioned a tidy man of the match 41
points and a share of the 2’s comp.
Right on Takeshi well rounded heals was the man on form, John ‘I told um
Oldham’ Hughes, and Les Cobban. The esteemed gentleman Les edged John on
count back after both tied on very creditable 39 points. John was not that
disappointed as he carded a 2.along with Takeshi, John Kevin McEntee and JJ
Harney.
Wednesday, April 3, Royal Lakeside - Stableford
A Flight
1st Tore Eliassen (15) 43pts
2nd John Hughes (10) 39pts
3rd Pat Reagan (13) 39pts
B Flight
1st Jimmy Day (19) 43pts
2nd Jean LaRoche (28) 33pts
3rd Andre Fortis (18) 33pts
C Flight
1st Silvano Pizzato (24) 37pts
2nd William Peach (21) 36pts
3rd Jim Reid (28) 34pts
Jimmy Day, the young man from Co. Wicklow, Ireland, took a major step
towards realizing his golfing potential as he whipped the Royal Lakeside
course with a sizzling 43 points for the top spot in B Flight and co-man of
the match. Jimmy was a huge ten shots clear of fellow B Flighters Jean
LaRoche and Andre Fortis, as Jean edge André for the silver in the resulting
count back.
A Flight was not to be outdone as Tore Eliassen carded a sizzling 43 points
to sit atop the podium. Headline boy John Hughes edged his European
compatriot (they are all compatriots come Ryder Cup time) Irishman Pat
Reagan on count back to secure the silver after both recorded with very
impressive 39 point returns.
Silvano Pizzato stood atop the C Flight podium with his 37 points, bettering
his old friend William Peach by two points. Peter Reid eased into the pay
window as his 34 points rounded out the flight.
Tore Eliassen, Terry Mangan, Peter Henshaw, Silvano Pizzato and William
Peach shared the 2’s pot.
Friday, April 5,
Treasure Hills - Stableford
A Flight
1st John Hughes (10) 38pts
2nd Kevin McEntee (6) 36pts
3rd Mark Riley (2) 35pts
B Flight
1st Jim Reid (28) 32pts
2nd Sean Soden (22) 32pts
3rd Nick Odnoral (16) 31pts
Removing any controversy over his choice as the title guy, John Hughes went
out and claimed his second man of the match award, coupled with a third
place on Monday and a second on Wednesday of the week. John was also the
only player to better par on the day, and thereby solve the Treasure Hill
puzzle. John’s A Flight winning 38 point score was 2 clear of Kevin ‘you
know who’ and yet another clear of 2 handicapper Mark Riley.
B Flight wilted a little under the heat and humidity as Jim Reid showed he
was no one-trick pony as he gained a count back win over Irishman Sean
Soden, both on 32 points. Big Nick Odnoral tidied up the flight a shot back.
Kevin McEntee (a brace), Barry Copestake, Jim Reid and Ivan Plunkett shared
the 2’s pot.

New golf society to open on the ‘Darkside’

Bob Newell and his friends
gather at Paradise Bar following the Birthday Bash golf on Saturday, March
30.
The Players Lounge golf society will
officially open on Thursday, May 2, with a tournament at Green Valley. There
are a limited amount of tee times available so please book early to avoid
disappointment. Well known Pattaya character Bob Newell will head the
venture and all are welcome. Playing days are Tuesday, Thursday and
Saturday.
Bob’s Birthday Bash
On the 30th of March Bob Newell celebrated his #% Birthday with some of his
close friends at Green Valley. The scoring was not up to the usual standard
but the amount of sherbets consumed set a new record. ‘Broad more’ Bob and
Paul ‘Fetz’ Young shared the 2 near pins kindly donated by the Paradise Bar.
Good mates Jez Lord Lucan and Mussel’s Bonner on 33 points went to count
back with Lord Lucan emerging from hiding long enough to grab the third
place. Eddy the Eagle spotted an opening to nick the silver on 34 points.
And would you believe it, birthday boy Bob stood atop the podium in his own
tournament.
Back at the Paradise Bar the party continued well into the night, a great
time, and I am sure a taste of things to come in the future - roll on the
2nd of May.
Note: The Players Lounge is a spacious newly renovated building tastily
decorated, air-conditioned bar and restaurant with plenty of outside seating
for smokers etc., situated on Soi Wat Sutthawas off Soi Siam near to the
Courtyard Pub. If you need any more information please call Bob on 080 096

Jim maintains top form
PSC golf from Rendezvous Resort
Tuesday, April 2, The Emerald -
Stableford
First game of the week on Tuesday saw a good sized crew, just 1 short of
having 2 flights, visit Emerald, Ban Chang. The course was in good condition
despite starting to dry out around the edges.
Jim
Federspiel.
Good scores were to be the order of the day, with Jim
Federspiel (17) continuing his fine form with a striking 43 points. Second
and third needed a count back to finalise the order with Kurt Erik Persson
(24) getting the nod 21/19 over Owen Walkley (11) after both signed for 40
points. Jeff Wylie’s (6) 39 points was made to look a bit pedestrian, but
was just enough to get the final prize.
Near pins were spread around between Clive, Jeff, Owen & Mham.
Thursday, April 4, Century Chonburi - Stableford
Thursday came and we journeyed up the 331 to Century Chonburi, where the
course was in reasonable condition, though the greens were a little on the
un-cut side and subsequently lacked the fireworks they can produce.
Owen Walkley (11) & Allan Jones (27) needed a count back to separate them
after both finished on a creditable 37 points. Owen’s outstanding back 9 of
24 points was enough to get the nod over Allan’s good 21 points. Only 3
podium spots today and it was the in-form Jim Federspiel (17) getting the
third place money on a count back to the last 6 holes over Paddy Devereux
(23), 12/9, after both had 34 points.
Near pins were picked up by Jonathan & Brian; Jonathan making birdie from
about 4 inches and Brian almost making birdie, only the putt didn’t go in.
Note: Rendezvous Resort, Restaurant & Bar plays golf generally on Tuesday &
Thursday, with the bar hosting prompt presentations on both days. As a PSC
affiliated venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies & seniors who have
opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or
enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Slick greens take no prisoners at Treasure Hill
The Billabong Bar Golf Society

JJ Harney, Bob Philp and
Jim Grieve.
Monday, April 1, The Emerald -
Stableford
The venue was Emerald today for our April Fools day out and the greens
staff got us really good by not mowing the greens, making it hard work
to even get the ball to the hole. They were not the slippery greens you
normally get here, in fact they were as slow as hell, however some
players used their drivers while putting and got a reasonable score!
Whilst nobody beat their handicap today at least some managed to play to
it.
It was great to see John Khan, Guy Lindsay Watson and Nu playing with us
today although Nu was the only one of the three that got into the
prizes. Nu took fourth spot on 34 points while coming in third was
another lady, namely Eng Cotterell with 35 points, and in second was
Brian Maddox with 36. Winning on a count back over Brian was Frank
Sharkey, also with an even per 36 points.
Once again there were no ‘2’s.
Wednesday, April 3, Green Valley - Stableford
Things are starting to dry up and in urgent need of some rain and Green
Valley is no exception; the fairways on some holes here have some
extraordinary dry patches that are difficult to hit off, but apart from
that it is still a great course to play.
With five groups today we got off to an early start in good conditions
as there was a little breeze blowing to cool us down. Playing a single
stableford round the scores were good, with most of the field returning
30 points or more. Coming in fourth was Frank Sharky with 36 points,
losing third spot on a count back to Liz Collier also with 36. Second
place went to Martin Hayes with 37 points and in first was Mark Potten
with 38.
There was only one ‘2’ today, from Murray Hart, and it was his first
eagle, knocking the ball into the 7th hole for a two. Great shot Murray
- hope there are many more to come!
Friday, April 5,
Treasure Hill - Stableford
Treasure Hill was the real winner today; the last time we played here I
wrote in our report that the greens hadn’t been cut and they were not
the way they normally are to putt on. Well today the course got its own
back as the putting surfaces were like glass - just like you want them
to be! I think everyone struggled because the scores were very ordinary
to say the least.
The day was a little hot and the Capt was heard to say that walking
around this course is not bad as you always get a breeze. JJ Harney was
to comment after 5 holes, “Where’s the breeze you were talking about?”
We were actually in a pocket surrounded by trees and it was like a
sauna, but we kept going and the breeze sprung up again a little further
on.
Anyway back to the golf, the scores weren’t the best and there was a
3-way count back on 31 points for first second and third. The Capt
himself topped the podium logjam ahead of Eng Cotterell in second and
Liz Collier in third. Fourth place went to JJ Harney with a magnificent
30 points.
Once again there were no ‘2’s so the spoils went across the bar for
drink all round.
Note: If you are looking for a game with a friendly bunch of golfers
give Bob a call on 082 204 3411.

A walk in the
park for Willett
PSC golf from The Beaver Bar & Grill

Larry Willett.
Friday, the 5th of April found those
16 Beaver Bar & Grill golfers brave enough to battle the heat arriving
at the Emerald Golf Course for the weekly golf outing. The day started
out pleasant enough, but quickly warmed up.
One golfer, Larry Willett, also got hot and posted a scorching round of
45 points to win the competition while Erik Claasse won the nearest to
the pin award.
All returned to the Beaver Bar later where iced tea was the more popular
drink of the afternoon.
Nicholson leads the way at Greenwood
The Travellers Rest Golf Group
Andy Rich
Monday this week combined Easter Monday with April Fools Day, so I
wasn’t sure whether my golf game was going to experience a
resurrection or whether I was going to feel like an idiot as usual.
After playing a round at a breezy Bangpakong I must admit it was
more like the latter than the former, although I did finish better
than I started so perhaps it was a little of both.

Mike Ensor.
It was a swift return to Bangpakong for the TRGG as it was less than
two weeks since our previous visit and the windy conditions kept the
scores down. Instead of the usual 40+ points required to take first
place it was a more modest 37pts posted by Mike Ensor (10), which
was good enough to take the prize money. Neil Allison (19) was a
close second on 36pts and Mike Rushant (11) slipped into third spot
with 34.
On Tuesday 2nd April, Greenwood A and B courses
played host to our group and the slightly kinder conditions led to
some better scoring, or maybe there were some better golfers in the
field, I am not sure. Anyway, Dave Nicholson (14) showed everybody
the way home with an impressive 39pts. His playing partner Max Scott
(4) came second on 37pts, winning on count back from Jim Cleaver
(13).
Dave Nicholson (left) with Max Scott.
Thursday 4th April saw the TRGG make its weekly visit to Phoenix to
take on Mountain and Lakes. Craig Hitchens (12), shooting 38pts, was
too good for the rest and took the winner’s berth. Phil Taylor (17),
who had had a bit of a nightmare at Bangpakong on Monday, showed one
and all that it had been a temporary blip by returning to form with
36pts to take second and Mod Chaviraksa (11) showed you can’t keep a
good woman down for long taking by third place with 35.
On Friday 5th April it was the turn of Bangpra to provide the
stalwarts of the TRGG with an examination of their golfing skills.
Mike Rushant (11) passed with a distinction by finishing first with
38pts. Larry Simpson (12) acquitted himself well enough to take a
second with 35 and Neil Bramley (9) flew back into Thailand to post
a good third place finish with 34pts.
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week!

LeBlanc blitzes Burapha
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Monday, April 1, Burapha - Stableford
Thirty-five Outbackers attended Burapha to play the unusual combination of A
and C, as B and D are closed for a major tournament in mid April, which
starts on the 18th. Usually we play blue markers on A and B and white
markers on C and D but because of some long water carries, we had an easier
than usual day, using the white markers for both A and C.
Greg
LeBlanc.
The day started off hot and humid with the storm clouds building up all day
until the heavens opened in the afternoon, but thankfully by then all groups
had finished the course.
The starter got us off early and there were only two groups in front of us,
which were both two-balls that we never sighted after the first few holes,
so we all finished in less than four hours and it’s great to get back to
millionaire’s golf and have the course basically to ourselves. Today was the
first day of the new low season rates and our thanks go to Burapha for the
exceptional rate that is on offer to the Outback on a Monday.
The course was in good condition and the greens were especially quick, but
thankfully true to putt on.
The scoring was excellent with the top score being 42pts from Greg LeBlanc,
the Div C winner by 9pts; then there were two 41’s from Kissy Buchanan &
Rosco, who took the first two places in the very tough B Division, followed
by Svenn in third in the same div B, with 39.

Ron Dickie.
A pair of 37’s were enough in the premier division as Ron Dickie got the nod
over Rick Sinfield on count back, but Rick had a great round with 73 off the
stick.
There were five ‘2’s from Kerry Beck & John Cunningham (on A3), Steve
Poznanski & Pete Stonebridge (on A6) and Joe Mooneyham (on C5).
Div A (0-13)
1st Ron Dickie (6) 37pts
2nd Rick Sinfield (2) 37pts
3rd Bob Finley (13) 36pts
Div B (14-19)
1st Keith Buchanan (15) 41pts
2nd Rosco Langoulant (15) 41pts
3rd Svenn Ole Lund (14) 39pts
Div C (20+)
1st Greg LeBlanc (27) 42pts
2nd Ron Meldrum (22) 33pts
3rd Jon Kittilsen (22) 31pts
Tuesday, April 2, Khao Kheow - Stableford
There were 12 Outbackers today playing the B & C nines at Khao Kheow off the
yellow tees on another very hot day with little or no wind, so hats off to
the boys who were brave enough to walk.
The A loop was closed due to sanding of the greens but otherwise the course
was in above average condition although in parts it was a little bit brown,
but this is only to be expected for this time of year.
Welcome to Gordon Clegg, who was having his first game with the Outback, and
well done to Andy Makara who won the day with 35pts. Jon Kittilsen took
second with 34 from Chopper, aka Kerry Rothman (33) and Svenn Lund rounded
the podium off with 33.
There was just one ‘2’, scored by Suzi.
1st Andy Makara (29) 35pts
2nd Jon Kittilsen (22) 34pts
3rd Kerry Rothman (14) 33pts
4th Svenn Ole Lund (14) 32pts
Wednesday, April 3, Siam Plantation - Stableford
With Tapioca still closed for renovations to the tees and greens, the 22
Outbackers again enjoyed the delights of Pineapple and Sugar Cane and they
are both in great condition. The starter got us off on time, starting some
groups on Pineapple and the last two groups on Sugar Cane so everybody got
back to the clubhouse before the afternoon storms. This was helped by the
fact that there were not many others on the course which facilitated another
very quick round.
Late entrant John O’Keefe, who switched across from a poorly supported
Pattana venue, made the most of his liking for this course to produce a fine
40pts (the day’s top score) to take Div B from Stephen Blazsanyik on 35 and
Tim Knight, who held off Sausage & Chopper only on count back, all with 33.
The premier division was won by a rare visitor to this course but Outback
regular, Paul Greenaway, with 37pts, beating Siam Plantation member big
Steve Poznanski with the same score, and the Capt’ took third place on 36.
There was only one ‘2’ from Chris Davisson
Div A (0-13)
1st Paul Greenaway (10) 37pts
2nd Steve Poznanski (12) 37pts
3rd Stephen Mann (11) 36pts
Div B (14+)
1st John O’Keefe (16) 40pts
2nd Stephen Blazsanyik (17) 35pts
3rd Tim Knight (21) 33pts
Friday, April 5,
Green Valley - Stableford
Thirty-five players made the trip to Green Valley on another hot and humid
day. The starter got us away on time and we all had a very good round with
all players back in the clubhouse in under four hours, which was very good
considering the number of walkers and the toll taken on the caddies by the
heat.
The course was again in great condition, but you can see a lot of areas that
are under stress because of the hot weather. The greens have a lot of growth
in them for protection against the hot conditions and that has made them a
lot slower but still good to putt on. The bunkers have now settled after
having new sand in them and are now a lot more consistent to play out of.
There was some very solid scoring, particularly in Div B, but the best score
of the day was in Div C by David Davies who scored a massive 43pts to win by
ten from Jon Kittilsen (33) and Tim Knight with 32.
Pete Stonebridge found his game at last ahead of the upcoming Chiang Rai &
Chiang Mai trip, where he will be looking for a repeat of the 40pts which he
scored today to win Div B. Svenn Lund, who has had series of good results
during the last fortnight, was second with 38 from Bob Lindborg and Sugar
Ray both on 37.
The premier division went to Art O’Connor with 38 points while John
Cunningham was one back in second on 37.
Finally, we say goodbye to Svenn & Jon who are away home this weekend.
There were three ‘2’s from Paul Bourke & John Cunningham (12th) and Paul got
another one on the 16th.
Div A (0–13)
1st Art O’Connor (13) 38pts
2nd John Cunningham (6) 37pts
3rd Paul Bourke (11) 35pts
4th Stephen Mann (11) 33pts
Div B (14–18)
1st Pete Stonebridge (18) 40pts
2nd Svenn Ole Lund (14) 38pts
3rd Bob Lindborg (18) 37pts
4th Sugar Ray Handford (18) 37pts
Div C (19+)
1st David Davies (23) 43pts

An Easter treat for lads
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
Easter Monday, bright blue sky and cooling breezes all the way as the
Pattaya Golf Society visited Royal Lakeside on 1st April to play a
stableford competition on the immaculately prepared course. What a prospect
lay ahead for the group. An empty course added to the attraction of the day
and the days are well gone when a golfer needed forty points just to get
into the frame by the banks of the Bangpakong River.

Gordon Melia with the two Geoff’s.
Sharing third place were late entrant Dave Edwards and Norwegian golfer Bent
Saeverud on 33 points and they just missed out on the top spot of 34 points
which was shared by “Big Phil” Mitchell and Peter Ditz.
Alan Flynn and Dave Edwards shared the ‘2’s pot after their birdies on the
twelfth and fifteenth holes respectively and John Mason, who started out
like the proverbial train, found his only consolation was the Booby Bevy
after his implosion on the back nine gave him split figures of 22 - 6 for
his round. Rabbi’s free beer draw was won by Gubbi Innvaer.
Later at the presentation, Mr Len thanked John Mason for his excellent
stewardship on the day and the whole group were unanimous in their praise
for the condition of the course, which will be well patronised over the
coming months by the PGS.
The Rabbi has arrived
The Pattaya Golf Society visited Bangpra on Wednesday, 3rd April to play a
stableford competition on the quality course, which unusually disappointed
with inconsistent, unrolled and uncut greens. It seems like a prelude to
some regular greens maintenance. However, the rest of the course was in
excellent condition and the two flights, divided at fourteen and under, left
the tee on time.
The top flight struggled on the greens and Mike Ensor managed to take third
place with 32 points, which included a birdie ‘2’ on the twelfth hole. In
second with the best gross figures of the day, seventy-nine, was Martin
Grimoldby with 33 points. The winner was Scotsman Neil McIntosh with 37
points.
The second flight was a tighter affair with John Chelo finishing third with
31 points, a couple behind Bento Saeverud whose 34 points showed his
consistency this trip. The flight winner was none other than the “Rabbi”,
Jeff Cohen, with 35 points, his best result in over four years giving him
his maiden PGS win. The Rabbi has indeed arrived and to celebrate he duly
rang the bell and the presentation party was a jolly good affair.
“Big Phil” Mitchell took the Booby Bevy for his “hero-to-zero” round in
which he plummeted from first on his last round to last on this and Wichai
Tananusorn took the boss’s free beer draw in his stride. Greens apart
Bangpra still gave good value on the day.
Forty plus again
On Friday, 5th April the Pattaya Golf Society made the short trip to Crystal
Bay to play a stableford competition on the B and C nines. As normal, the
course was in excellent condition with greens running at a deliciously
fast-medium pace and well prepared fairways. Golfers on top of their game
could look forward to another high scoring day and so it was to be.
In fourth place with 37 points was Aussie Robbie Taylor, playing as solidly
as ever. In its sixth visit this year the PGS racked up three more
forty-plus rounds as Dave Edwards tied with Wichai Tananusorn for second
place with 40 points; Wichai also recording the best gross of the day, 75.
The winner was Dave Lehane with his best round for a long while, 41 points.
The retired dentist was certainly not looking down in the mouth after this
performance!
Incredibly there were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy was reserved for
Bento Saeverud after some amazingly athletic emergency “evacuation” en route
to the course. Mike Ensor, just out of the frame, enjoyed the boss’s free
beer draw and the week ended on another high in Soi Buakhao for the PGS
golfers.

Smart success at Mountain Shadow
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Monday, April 1, Mountain Shadow –
Stableford
A sudden drop in numbers today as the Songkran exodus seems to have started
a little early, so we were down to a single flight for the first time for
quite some time. We arrived at Mountain Shadow to find the car park almost
empty, and were anticipating a quick round, but unfortunately we were put
out behind two slow 4-balls, so it turned out to be another long day.
The temperature was as hot as anyone could remember and with the
accompanying high humidity, most players were happy just to survive the
round!
It was a day when having a golf buggy was a real advantage, and Reg Smart
duly seized the opportunity to score his first outright win of the year
ahead of the ever consistent Colin Greig. Reg had 34 points after 14 holes
but fell victim to the tricky closing stretch of holes, which were made even
more difficult today due to a strong wind which developed as a thunder storm
passed close by.
Colin Greig won the least putts competition again, but someone pointed out
that if you counted the putts from off the green, he would have also won the
most shots with a putter competition!
1st Reg Smart (29) 37pts
2nd Colin Greig (10) 33pts
3rd Peter Habgood (19) 30pts
Near Pins: Colin Greig, Geoff Hart and Gerry Cooney.
Least Putts: Colin Greig (27)
Wednesday, April 3, Royal Lakeside - Stableford
Maybe it was the longer trip than usual, or maybe memories of the
blisteringly hot round on Monday, but there were even fewer golfers today.
It was a hot day again, but some relief was provided by the strong wind that
was blowing at between 2 and 3 club’s strength. The course was in good
condition as always, apart from the usual complaints about there being too
much sand in the bunkers.
Lee Butler came back to the clubhouse looking like a drowned whale, after
having sweated out several gallons of beer, but still managed to card the
best score of the day to take the overall win.
Mike Grasser was playing his last game before returning to the States, but
unfortunately he had to cut the round short due to a back injury – not a
great way to finish a holiday Mike, but hopefully see you back again later
in the year.
1st Lee Butler (17) 37pts
2nd Gordon Melia (19) 33pts
3rd Mark West (11) 30pts
Near Pins: Colin Greig and Lee Butler (2).
Least Putts: Tony Robbins (27)
Friday, April 5, Khao Kheow B & C - Stableford
17 players today for our visit to Khao Kheow, which meant we had three
3-balls leading the way, but fortunately the course was not too busy and the
round was completed without any major holdups.
As the first 4-ball was waiting to tee off from the 1st tee they watched
Peter Habgood hit a great second shot from the first fairway back towards
the second green, following an errant tee shot. Some minutes later they also
watched as PJ Redmond and Jerry Waselenkoff were in deep discussion standing
over two balls on the first fairway, before Jerry jumped into his buggy and
headed off to the 2nd green. Jerry returned with Peter Habgood in tow and it
transpired that Peter’s superb second shot had actually been played with the
wrong ball – not a great way to start a round!
Other than that little drama at the start, the only other major drama was
Neil Griffin carding a great score of 39 points, to win the honours on the
day, beating Colin Greig on a count back. Neil also had the distinction of
winning the near pin prize on the 173 yard par three 12th hole, using a
driver to put the ball two feet from the pin – proving it doesn’t matter
which club you use!
We said goodbye to Gordon Melia today on his final game of the annual visit,
and we look forward to seeing him and Marion again in the autumn.
1st Neil Griffin (26) 39pts
2nd Colin Greig (10) 39pts
3rd Thomas Nyborg (19) 37pts
4th Gerry Cooney (13) 36pts
Near Pins: Neil Griffin, Les Cobban, PJ Redmond and Thomas Nyborg.
Least Putts: Mark Stanley (27)
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play out of
The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and almost
opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but
competitive golf competition why not come and join us.

Great going for Greenaway
PSC golf from The Golf Club

Masao Ishikawa, Ken Aihara and
Frank Blazevic.
Steve Ellison
Monday, April 1, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford
A Flight
1st Paul Greenaway (10) 42pts
B Flight
1st Henry O’Brien (21) 40pts
First off, a couple of late cancellations find us with a few spare rooms for
our Khao Yai trip over Songkran. Last chance to sign up for our road trip
that leaves on the 15th and returns on the 20th with 5 nights hotel with
breakfast and 4 green fees with caddy for only 10,500 baht. At 1,200 feet up
in the mountains, it is a nice, cool getaway that features some great golf
courses. See our facebook page for more details, or drop by TGC.
Paul “Take it Easy” Greenaway had a very easy time, taking all the handsome
man vouchers at today’s outing at Green Valley. If you need to rent a car or
motorbike, see Paul and he will set you up regardless of your handicap.
In the B flight, that legendary Scotsman Henry O’Brien came out fighting
with a great round of 40 points to grab first place honours.

Henry O’Brien back at the
club.
Don’t for get to keep drinking water and electrolytes as
our heat wave takes its’ toll once again. Dehydration is a danger these days
as the unseasonably high temperatures need to be taken seriously.
Wednesday, April 3, Crystal Bay (white tees) – Stableford
1st Masao Ishikawa (16) 36pts
2nd Ken Aihara (5) 35pts
3rd Frank Blazevic (0) 34pts
It was a sudden change of heart as we changed our published venue of
Wangjuntra to Crystal Bay. A smaller than average turnout seemed to be the
result of weeks of hot, hot weather that had finally taken its’ toll on the
gathered masses. Guys that would never, ever think of taking a buggy were
now riding happily along as a brief respite to the heat.
We were discussing the so called “winter” we never had and realized that not
one evening was what you would call a chilly one. It just never cooled down
enough this year to cause any goosebumps riding over Pratumnak Hill. I can’t
wait for summer… not!
From the Land of the Rising Sun, Masao Ishikawa did well today in the Land
of Smiles. Masao-San has been a regular here with us for the last few months
and today was his first place victory at last. Fellow countryman Ken Aihara
(Mr. Up and Down) was a shot behind on 35 and visiting pro Frank Blazevic
from “Downundah” took third in today’s comp. Thanks for joining us guys, and
stay cool!
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We usually play on Monday,
Wednesday and Friday so come join us for a seriously fun day out. Just call

Peters prevails on homeward stretch
IPGC Golf from The Tara Court
Sunday, March 31, Green Valley - Stableford
We were back at Green Valley today for our first time on a Sunday this year.
Now that the low season has arrived, and it is fairly quiet, we will be
playing at Green Valley every Sunday until November.

Joe Peters.
Again it was very hot today but as the course was quiet we got around
quickly. Joe Peters was our winner today with an excellent 39pts. Joe had a
bad start with only three points on the first three holes and seventeen on
the front nine, which left him lagging behind his playing partner Frank
McGowan. He certainly made up for his bad start though with twenty two
points on the back nine and left Frank trailing in second place with 34.
Joe has been playing with us right from the start and also has the honour of
being the winner of our very first Tara Court outing back in December last
year at Mountain Shadow, where he also had an excellent 39pts and made
history by winning our inaugural outing. Although he has been in the winning
enclosure many times since then, this is his first outright win. Well done
Joe!
There were no 2’s again today.
1st Joe Peters (18) 39pts
2nd Frank McGowan (15) 34pts
Tuesday, April 2, Bangpra – Stableford
A small group went to Bangpra today and as usual the course was in excellent
condition with fast greens, which caught out most of the golfers and made
the scoring less than good. It is a pleasure playing golf now as all the
courses are very quiet and play is fast.
Robert Hanson was the winner today with 32pts ahead of Phelim Moran in
second with 31. Again today there were no 2’s.
1st Robert Hanson (18) 32pts
2nd Phelim Moran (10) 31pts
Note: The Tara Court Golf Group plays every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday,
leaving O’Gara’s Bar and Restaurant at the Tara Court on Pratamnak Rd around
10.00 a.m. Sign up either in O’Gara’s or ring George on 087 540 0844 and he
will book you in.

Hal Hart drives in a double
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, April 1, Mountain Shadow -
Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Allen Raaen (9) 32pts
2nd Mike Hill (21) 31pts
3rd Shuichi Kodaka (16) 31pts
4th Markku Tynell (25) 31pts
5th Allan Heavey (26) 30pts
With a stiff wind severely hampering the players at the now well-maintained
Mountain Shadow course, which according to the course constructors was
originally designed to be played by golfers with handicaps of 15 or less,
scoring was always going to be at a premium. Add to that the greens offering
their usual challenge and the results proved to be less than required to
keep the day’s competition counting for handicap review.

Hal Hart.
After having scored just five points after five holes,
Allen Raaen then steadied the boat and amassed another twenty seven over the
last thirteen to scrape home by a single shot ahead of a three-way count
back for second place.
The count back was won by Mike Hill with 22 points after he had also started
out the day with a few missed opportunities, scoring just nine points, but
lit up the course playing to four below handicap over the inward half to
claim second place ahead of Shuichi Kodaka with 18 points in third and
Markku Tynell in fourth with 17. Allan Heavey rounded out the podium a
further shot back in fifth.
There were no 2’s and precious few threes in either division with the green
keeping staff, responsible for hole placements, having had a field day.
Before the presentations were made there was a welcome back for George
Pittam.
Wednesday, April 3, Crystal Bay C & A - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Hal Hart (23) 39pts
2nd Alwyne Burley (15) 37pts
3rd Markku Tynell (25) 31pts
4th Allen Raaen (9) 31pts
5th Bruce Kusyk (13) 31pts
After the difficulties of the previous outing everyone was looking forward
to the much more open Crystal Bay club, where the C and A nines were the
day’s challenge and possibly a better day for scoring. This course is also
benefitting from more than the usual amount of maintenance and is beginning
to get back to its old quality, which will assure that it will be featuring
regularly on the schedule during the low season.
Alwyne
Burley.
Once again the wind played a prominent part in the day’s
outcome with most of the field struggling to play to their handicaps. The
notable exception was Hal Hart who finally almost put it altogether, winning
the day with a three under handicap return that was good enough to win by
two from playing partner Alwyne Burley, with a round that included four
three pointers and a four pointer.
Hal has now seen his handicap drop by four strokes since the beginning of
the year and now confidently looks forward to the day when he will not be
getting a shot on every hole.
This will no doubt come as a huge relief to his regular playing partner,
Alwyne Burley, who once again had to settle for second best and second place
as he lost the front, back and overall and several skins in their side
match. But second place was a good result, as his one under handicap round
was six ahead of the count back for third, on a day was that was far from
easy.
Markku Tynell won the count back for third place with a better 17 points and
underlined his continued improvement since taking up almost permanent
residence in the city. This left Allen Raaen in fourth with 16 points and
Bruce Kusyk in fifth with 15.
Once again there were no 2’s in the first division but Mike Hill had a very
nice result with one in the second division, on the signature 7th hole on
the C course, to sweep the multi roll over pot.
Friday, April 5, Khao Kheow B & C - Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Hal Hart (23) 34pts
2nd Brian Beaupre (5) 33pts
3rd Trevor Schirmer (17) 32pts
4th Martin Grimoldby (5) 30pts
5th Shuichi Kodaka (16) 29pts
After having played two tough courses in difficult conditions, the prospect
of travelling to one of the hardest course to beat was not relished by too
many today, with some opting for a day by the pool table, leaving the
hopefuls a bit thin on the ground.
Again the strong wind made sure that even the single handicappers in the
field struggled to find any consistency in their games and the scoring was
once more insufficient to count for handicap adjustment, except for the
winner’s downward assessment as he scored one below the CSS of for the day
which had moved out to 75.
Hal Hart once again outscored the rest of the field and both his playing
partners, who had been hoping for some revenge for the financial mauling
they had received in the previous outing, to take his second win of the
week, making it his first win double, although he needed just a two over
handicap round to succeed.
His playing partners saw a chink in Hal’s game on the 18th as he topped a
five-wood off the tee and then came up short with a three-wood desperation
recovery and they were counting the money until his third, from a 100 yards
out, settled next to the pin for a 4 for 3 and yet another skin and a win.
Brian Beaupre had a few too many single pointers but would have been the
winner if not for a blob on the back nine when the pressure was at its
highest and so had to settle for a well earned second place just one behind.
Trevor Schirmer had not been finding the week quite to his liking but came
back to form, just dropping off the pace over the closing holes to finish in
third place ahead of Martin Grimoldby in fourth and Shuichi Kodaka in fifth.
A notable absentee from the podium on the day was Markku Tynell, who had
been hoping to feature for the third time in a week, but at the end of the
analysis at the scorer’s table it was found that he had had more beers than
points on the day.
Once more it was surprising to find that there had been no 2’s in the first
division whilst Hal Hart slipped one in on the island green eighth on the B
nine to sweep the pot but one day too late for the big one that just got
away.
Before the prizes were presented there was a farewell for Brian Randall who
was returning to Blighty to help with the snow removal and mopping up after
several burst water pipes. Fortunately he left his sheepskin coat in one of
the left luggage lockers prior to his departure from Heathrow so he will be
well prepared on his return to deal with the 40 degree temperature swing.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile
082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach
Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do
not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A schedule
of courses to be played can be found on our web site at

Sunrise Lagoon offers new golfing venue
Jomtien golf with the IPGC
Monday, April 1, Sunrise Lagoon - Stableford
Not one person in our group had ever heard of this course until it was
mentioned to us a month ago, so we thought we’d give a go. It is a one
and a half hour journey from Siam Cats up the 331 and then onto the 304
before you reach this two year-old course.
Green fee and the caddy fee came to 850 baht, so not too bad, and there
is a reasonable clubhouse with a very good changing room. The course is
very flat but there are a lot of water hazards to avoid, with lakes on
every hole on the front nine and four more on the back.
The cut today was 5-18 and 19+ in division 2 and we selected the white
tees with a 6759 yardage. The best score of the day came in division 1
as Ted Morris won with 39 points. The telephone box entrepreneur Dennis
Scougal took second place with 35 and Kari Kuparinen was third with 33.
Lee Casey topped division 2 with 34 points and Adrian Shelley beat Glyn
Evans on a 13/11 back nine count back for the runner-up spot after they
both came in with 30 points.
Near pins went to Don Head (2), Ted Morris (2), Tim Hake (2) and Burnie
Sinclair.
Don Head and Ted Morris shared the ‘2’s in division 1 while no one was
successful in division 2.
It was certainly a different course today, which made a change for
everyone and some of the comments afterwards ranged from, “A great front
nine layout” and “The greens were good” to “Not impressed, very flat and
a bit boring” and “I would love to come back here in one year’s time.”
At the end of the day I think this will be included in our agenda like
Wangjuntr, i.e. once or twice a year.
Wednesday, April 3, Plutaluang - Stableford
There were seven groups out today on the West and North courses and the
cut was 5-16 in division 1 and 17+ in division 2.
38 points was enough to win division 2 for Walter Weber, beating Reijo
Heiskaiven on a 19/18 back nine count back, and eight points behind
those two Kari Aarnio beat Tony Holehouse on a 14/13 count back to
finish third.
Alan Maxwell won division 1 with 34 points after beating Billy
Fitzgerald 11/10 on the back 6 and Chris Voller edged Anders Pedersen
18/17 for third after they came in with 33 points.
Near pins were claimed by Kari Kuparinen, Andy Mills, Jean Morel, Anders
Pedersen, Kari Aarnio, Reijo Heiskaiven, Eiicchi Matsumoto and Tom
Novak.
Kari Kuparinen birdied the third on the west course to take the division
one ‘2’s pot while there was yet another rollover in division 2.
Friday, April 5,
Eastern Star - Stableford
There were many good remarks after the round today, not just members but
others regarding the major improvements to the 13th and 18th greens and
the overall condition of the rest of the course.
We had another seven groups out and playing off 13, Wilf Latham hit his
best round for a long time to win division 1 with 42 points. Karl Flood
came in second eight points behind and Chris Voller was third with 33.
Iain Walsh’s 34 points won division 2, with the Irish boy Cully Monks in
second place one point behind and Don Head taking third after beating
Walter Weber 21/19 on count back, both on 32 points.
Near pins went to Karl Flood, Tony Kay and Wilf Latham (2).
Ted Gardner birdied the sixth and today’s wonder boy Wilf Latham get
‘2’s on the 3rd and 13th to split the pot in division 1. Walter Weber
was the only winner in division 2 with his birdie on the 17th.

Golfnutter: The Masters – How to win
Welcome to Golfnutter’s Blog – a weekly commentary
highlighting contemporary golfing issues, in Pattaya and beyond. For more on
matters golf, especially the Masters, visit golfnutter.wordpress.com.
The publication of today’s Pattaya Mail should coincide with close of play
on day one of the first of this year’s majors. Timely then to analyse the
type of game best suited to the uniqueness that is Augusta National, to look
at the specific skills needed to don that Green Jacket come Sunday
afternoon.
The course has now been returned to its risk versus reward set-up, designed to
encourage the more adventurous. Its recent lengthening has seen it assessed with
an unofficial USGA Course Rating (unofficial because Augusta does not allow its
course to be rated) of 78.1, placing it among the ten most difficult courses in
the US.
Augusta National’s defence is its greens. Their undulations are complex and
their speeds faster than any the pros encounter. This course demands the very
best in determining exactly where on a particular green the ball should come to
rest, then executing the very shot that gets it there. Having done that,
determine the precise line to the hole. Finally, ensure the ball is hit with the
correct pace. And therein lies the two keys to winning the Masters – approach
shots and putting.
Stimpmeter speeds at the Masters are thought to be around 12 – 14 feet, although
this information is not released. By comparison, the local Mountain Shadow
course used to boast fast greens, five to ten years back. At their best they
would have run at circa10 feet. Crystal Bay often state their green speeds on a
notice board outside the locker rooms. On a good day it will read Stimpmeter
8.5. To get an understanding of Masters speeds, try putting to a central pin
from the back of Bangpra’s 6th or 14th, or the Emerald’s 7th or 12th. And whilst
you do, imagine if your ball misses the cup it could be hazard-bound.
The effect these putting surfaces have on scores cannot be overestimated. Any
flaws in a player’s putting stroke will be agonisingly exposed. The challenge
from tee to green still exists, obviously. But fairway width is generous, and if
the ball finishes in the second cut – Augusta has no rough – chances are the
player can still reach the green.
The test, therefore, is to place the tee-ball in a position from where the
approach shot can best be played, with a lofted club. In short, long off the
tee, hope for a reasonable lie, determine where on the green to land and hit it
there – with an absolutely pure strike.
So who will win and what is likely to be the winning score?
The second question is the easier one. Here’s a tip that could win you a beer or
two when backing what you think will be a tournament’s winning score. By the
time you read this, you should know the score, relative to par, of the first
round leader. Simply double it and then deduct two or three shots. If the
leading first round score is six under par, then the winning score is likely to
be 10-under. This tends to work at most tournaments except US Opens – where you
should just stick to a score between 2-under and 2-over par – or the Open
Championship where you never predict the winning score unless you know what the
wind is going to do, on what day, and from which direction it will do it.
As to who will win, well, that is a far harder question. Consider the
characteristics of play that Augusta National demands:
Length: The course has been lengthened by 500 yards over the last five years. At
7445 yards it is genuinely long. It normally has roll, but the most important
aspect is enough of it will permit the use of a more lofted club for the
approach shot, and that is vital.
GIR: Greens in Regulation is a crucial part of scoring well at Augusta. In the
last seven years, five of the winners have ranked 1st or 2nd for tournament GIR.
Rather reinforces the need for pure ball-striking.
Putting: Enough has been said.
Consider the last four winners – Watson, Schwartzel, Mickelson and Cabrera – and
ask yourself what two golfing characteristics do they have in common? These
players are high in driving distance but not in fairways hit. The same would be
true of multiple Masters winners from recent years; Tiger Woods, Jose Maria
Olazabal and perhaps the most errant hitter of all the greats, the incomparable
Severiano Ballesteros. The fact that their drives miss the fairway matters far
less at the Masters than it does at a US Open.
So to the winner; look for a long-hitter come noted ball-striker, who can stand
at the top end of a bathtub and have his putt stop before it reaches the
plug-hole.
Happy golfing!

Svendsen wins PC Classic; Blasse
recaptures OK Dinghy world title

Jorgen Svendsen (left) receives the perpetual
Pattaya Mail PC Classic trophy from Peter Cummins (center) and Ib Ottesen of
Jomtien Boathouse (right).
Australian Roger Blasse secured the 2013 Singha OK Dinghy World Championship
title in Pattaya last week after placing second in the only race sailed on the
final day, Friday, April 5. Britain’s Nick Craig took the overall silver while
Blasse’s compatriot Mike Williams received the bronze. The final race was won by
defending champion Andre Budzien from Germany while each race day seemed to
provide a different face on the top podium step.
“Of course I am really happy to win, but this week has really shown how
competitive the OK fleet has become,” said a delighted Blasse during the final
day trophy presentations.

OK Dinghy’s race downwind during the 16th Pattaya
Mail PC Classic.
The week-long (March 31 - April 5) OK World Championship, held for the first
time in Thailand at Pattaya’s Royal Varuna Yacht Club, was blessed with truly
outstanding weather and sailing conditions, which when combined with the superb
location, facilities and services offered at Varuna, was sure to have left a
positive and lasting impression on all 74 competitors from the nine countries
who took part in the event. Indeed, there was a genuine feeling that the sailors
wanted to return to Pattaya in the not too distant future for another
championship.
“So many of us regretted missing the warm sailing of Goa in 2003,” said New
Zealander Mike Wilde, Vice-President of OKDIA. “The historical interest and
involvement of HM the King and OK Dinghy sailing in Thailand led us to this
point where we are competing in what seems to me can only be described as a
sailor’s Nirvana.”

Roger Blasse (center) of Australia holds the OK
Dinghy world championship trophy flanked by second placed Nick Craig (left) and
third placed Mike Williams. (Photo courtesy OKDIA)
Coinciding with the OK Dinghy championship was the 16th edition of the recently
revived Pattaya Mail PC Classic, celebrating the birthday of Peter Cummins, a
veritable bastion of the maritime scene in Thailand and one of the region’s most
respected sailing and yachting journalists.
The PC Classic was the highlight of Day 5 of the OK Dinghy Worlds and took place
on Thursday, April 4, with the overall winner of the 2 races held that day being
presented with the perpetual PC Classic trophy, albeit for just a few brief
moments before it was placed back into careful storage until next year. The top
10 winners on the day did however receive replicas of the unique Tasmanian
shaped plaque to mark their achievements on the day.
As for Mr. Cummins himself, in his heyday no slouch at handing an OK Dinghy, on
this occasion he chose (for once) to let sense prevail over valour as he allowed
the ‘young guns’ to have their own spot in the limelight, contenting himself to
take a backseat perch close to the club bar – a perfect vantage point from which
to view the action.

Preparing for launch on PC Classic Day.
Out on the water, providence dictated that this special race day would be marked
with strongest winds of the week, up to 18-20 knots, with bigger waves making
the downwind lots of fun for the sailors, though the wind eased during the
second race to 12-14 knots.
The day afloat began with some spectacular launching through heavy surf that had
built as a result of the strengthening wind, and without the help of the club’s
boatmen this would have been an impossible task.
Once out to sea, defending world champion Andre Budzien took an early lead in
the first race of the day and maintained his advantage to the finish line.
Denmark’s Bo Pettersen spent most of the race in second as did his fellow
countryman Jorgen Svendsen in third. Championship leader Roger Blasse crossed in
fifth behind Nick Craig, while Blasse’s main competition Mike Williams of
Australia was struggling way back in 50th after his rudder fell off.

Happy to be sailing the warm waters of the Gulf.
Williams returned to take control of the day’s second race, leading Budzien into
the top mark and he sailed away to win his third race of the week. Blasse
rounded further back but fought through to the front and it was here while he
was fighting hard downwind with Budzien that the German got a second yellow flag
from the jury and had to retire from the race, effectively ending his OK title
challenge for this year.
Blasse couldn’t catch Williams but crossed second while Svendsen picked up his
second third place of the day to become the day’s overall winner and recipient
of the PC Classic trophy. Roger Blasse took second place over the 2 races while
Nick Craig placed third.
Back on dry land, a marching band struck up a familiar birthday refrain to
celebrate PC’s numerically uncertain anniversary, while the returning OK
sailors, after picking up their complimentary PC Classic T-shirts, were treated
to a superb buffet with accompanying beer and wine, provided courtesy of the
Pattaya Mail and the day’s other generous sponsors.
As always, an event such as the annual PC Classic can’t take place without the
backing of sponsorship and those on board this year included the Pattaya Mail
Media Group, Bakri Cono Shipyard, Pattaya Self Storage (PSS), BBX Thailand,
Norwegian Properties Group, ASAP Marine Trading, Jomtien Boathouse, SKAL Eastern
Seaboard and the Singha Beer Corporation.

Proceeds from the 2013 Pattaya Mail PC Classic will be used to support an
education fund for underprivileged children in the community.
So, whilst the plaudits on PC Classic day went to Denmark’s Jorgen Svendsen,
fittingly in a way as the OK Dinghy originates from that particular north
European country, we shall leave the final words to Aussie Roger Blasse, the
most consistent sailor of the week and winner of his second world title 15 years
after securing his first. In parting he paid a glowing tribute to the Royal
Varuna club, its staff and the event’s supporters. “This club is a hidden gem
and it’s been an absolutely fantastic week here for everyone taking part,” said
the new world champ!

Sharks attack proves too
strong for struggling Dolphins

Chonburi FC ‘Sharks’ emphatically underlined their
credentials as the ‘team to beat’ on the Eastern Seaboard with a 5-1 hammering
of local rivals Pattaya United at the Chonburi Stadium last Saturday, April 6.
With both teams making a somewhat lackluster start to the new Thai Premier
League campaign, the derby match was viewed by both sets of fans as an ideal
opportunity to kick-start the season and achieve local bragging rights into the
bargain.
It looked as though the Sharks recent dominance in these encounters might for
once be heading south as Pattaya took the lead in the 18th minute - the Chonburi
defence failed to clear a left wing cross and United forward Rachata Chaichan
was lurking at the far post to hammer the ball into the net.
With the gauntlet now thrown down, it didn’t take long for the home team to
respond to the challenge and they restored scoreline parity just five minutes
later when a cross found Adul Lahso 10 yards out from the Pattaya goal and he
had the simplest of tasks to stroke the ball home. The score would remain at 1-1
going into the break, with the game still in the balance.
In the second half Chonburi began to turn the screw on their opponents and they
took the lead through club captain Pipob On-Mo, who ran half the length of the
field past a static Pattaya defence to put his team 2-1 up.
Worse was to follow for Pattaya as holes began to appear alarmingly in their
defensive line and Chonburi’s Brazilian import Thiago Cunha bagged a brace of
goals in the 57th and 72nd minutes to put the game out of reach. Ten minutes
from time, Pipob On-Mo put the finishing touch to a slick three-man move to grab
his second goal of the match and complete the second half rout, while also
sealing a miserable afternoon for the travelling Dolphin supporters.
The pre-season optimism seems to have deserted Pattaya for the present time and
the Songkran break may have come at an opportune moment for them to try to
re-group. Whatever changes the United management choose to implement, they will
need to work fast as the Dolphins face two vital home games in quick succession
following the holiday break. On Wednesday, April 17, United face fellow
strugglers Ratchaburi FC and three days later they host unbeaten league leaders
Muang Thong United.
