Lovgreen & Olsen shoot blistering rounds
PSC golf from Café Kronborg

Eddie Glinsek, Dave Richardson
and Hennig Olsen.
Monday, March 18, Bangpakong –
Stableford
It was our favorite today - the Bangpakong Riverside course, just up route 7
for a little bit over 1 hour. After a swift check-in we were off the first
tee 15 minutes early under sunny and hot conditions but with a stiff breeze
all day. The course was, as always, in magnificent condition.
The first 2 groups today were 3-balls, getting around in 3 hours and 50
minutes. Back in the clubhouse, welcomes went out to Mark Erikson from
Dayton, Ohio and Torben Sorensen from Denmark, while we said our goodbyes to
Henning Olsen and Kai Aabling, going back to Denmark.
Two flights today with the cut at handicap 19 and with reduced numbers only
2 technical awards. Henning Olsen took the A Flight with a terrific 44
points ahead of Doug Maiko in second on 42 and Arne Max Pedersen third on a
count back over Richard Kubicki, both with 40 points.
Eddie Glinsek won the B Flight with 40 points, one up on Kurt Sandgaard in
second, while Dave Richardson placed third on 37 and Mike Winfield took
fourth on a count back from Henrik Aagaard.
A Flight (0-19)
1st Henning Olsen (19) 44pts
2nd Doug Maiko (14) 42pts

Thursday, March 21, Plutaluang W&N – Stableford
Plutaluang West and North loops were the test today and after we
checked in we found that sport days had started, so just 1000 baht apiece
for green fees, caddy and a shared cart - great value!
We got off the first West tee 15 minutes early under sunny skies and very
hot conditions.
The course was in fine condition with consistent greens throughout.
We had a very swift round of 3 hours and 50 minutes as the course was empty
ahead for most of the day. Only two flights with the cut at handicap 19 as
our numbers are starting to wind down.
Arne Max Pedersen took the A Flight with a fine 42 points ahead of Takeshi
Hakozaki in second with 39 while Torben Sorensen took third with 35 and
Richard Kubicki fourth with 34.
Jan Lovgreen won the B Flight with a smashing 45 points to finish five clear
of Henrik Aagaard in second on 40 points and Kurt Sandgaard and Eddie
Glinsek completed the podium some way back.
A Flight (0-19)
1st Arne Max Pedersen (15) 42pts
2nd Takeshi Hakozaki (12) 39pts
3rd Torben Sorensen (18) 35pts
4th Richard Kubicki (13) 34pts

2G Performance at Crystal Bay
IPGC golf from the Pattaya Golf Society
The Pattaya Golf Society visited a beautifully
prepared Crystal Bay on Monday, 18th March to play a stableford
competition in two flights over the B and C nines. The division was made
at seventeen and under and there was plenty of scope and skill in the
field to make it a day to enjoy.
In the top flight, Alan Flynn and Larry Slattery continued their good
form with 34 points each, giving them a share of second place. The
winner of the flight was Aussie Greg Gawron with forty points. Wow!
In the second flight John Chelo managed 35 points for third place with
Jim Proctor playing his best golf in many a year to finish second with
38 points. The winner was Ken Grimes again with forty points. The two
winners had given the group its fourteenth and fifteenth score of 40
points or better this year in just 35 tournaments. Now that is a record
to be proud of.
Japanese golfer Shuichi Kodaka could well have been up there with the
Aussies but the wheels fell off his wagon on the back nine and he ended
up with the Booby Bevy for the highest split figures of the day, 18 and
10 points.
The birdie ‘2’s pot was shared by Greg Gawron, Peter Ditz, Mike Earley,
Dave Lehane and Alan Walker.
Once again Crystal Bay had been keen to impress and the PGS golfers had
responded well to the challenge of golf on the fine course.
Edgar edges it at Greenwood
Six months ago Greenwood was not the first course each month on the PGS
agenda because the greens had suffered more than a little mismanagement,
but now the course up the far reaches of Route 331 is back to its
challenging best.
The group chose the B and C nines as the venue for its stableford event
on Wednesday, 20th March. The smaller than usual field restricted the
flights to one and some over-zealous watering of the fairways meant most
tee shots were restricted in distance so the better hitters benefitted
and scores were lower than expected.
Sharing second place were Jorn Eriksen and John Chelo with 30 points
apiece whilst Paul Edgar used his power off the tee to good effect with
32 points for an excellent win.
Larry Slattery had posted the day’s only birdie ‘2’, on C3, and Richard
Dobson took Rabbi’s free beer draw in his stride, leaving the Booby Bevy
in the very capable hands of Mike and Yvonne Earley, both with very
valid reasons for winning it but who were leaving at the end of their
annual stay just twenty-four hours later, having supported the PGS in
more ways than one as enthusiastically as always. Travel well and
Greenwood will be waiting again when you return again early next year.
Quality counts at Pattana
Eastern Seaboard golf is all about quality and “vfm” and on Friday, 22nd
March the Pattaya Golf Society duly visited Pattana to play a stableford
competition from the yellow tees in two flights divided at sixteen and
under. The course was its usual immaculate best with well paced greens
and almost pristine fairways, and a cooling breeze made the day all the
more bearable for the golfers.
In the second flight, Jeff Cohen (the “Rabbi” himself) amazed all with
his best ever round of 36 points, matching that of Ken Grimes, for a
share of second place and had it not been for a bout of foot cramp the
Rabbi would have given a lesson to all about the value of good coaching
sessions. The flight winner was Dave Lehane and his round of 37 points
marked another significant score in his CV.
In the top flight, Aussie Greg Gawron shook off the inconvenience of a
chest infection and took third place with 33 points, one behind the
second placed golfer, compatriot Robbie Taylor. The flight winner, with
the best gross of 79, was Wichai Tananusorn with 38 points. He also
shared the ‘2’s pot with Neil Grimes after their fine efforts on C7 and
A8 respectively.
The Booby Bevy was reserved for Paul Edgar for his “hero-to-zero”
efforts after his previous excellent round with the group. Indeed it had
been an excellent day for the PGS at Pattana.

The curtain falls, as does the rain
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday, March 19, Greenwood -
Stableford
This was to be our last week at ML, after more than 3 years playing from the
Lake Mabprachan pub. Tuesday was a visit to Greenwood with the A & C
combination our test of the day. We set out under threatening skies, with
the rain holding off for the front 9, before sending it down in big buckets
for the first 3 or 4 holes on the back.

Ray from Mulligans Lakeside.
There were a couple
of withdrawals, as it was not real enjoyable for a
while, but most soldiered on, however good scores were literally washed away
with the downpour. Graham Briggs (25) had done enough to shoot 34 points,
while Jonathan Pratt (17) pipped Yves Philibert (27) on count back 15/12 to
settle the minor placings after both had 31 points. Graham also showed the
way in the near pin hunt, which proved difficult on the day.
Thursday, March 21, Crystal Bay - Stableford
Thursday, our last day, was Crystal Bay with C & A again our allotted loop.
The course was in good condition and in a complete turnaround from Tuesday,
the winning scores were outstanding. Jonathan Pratt (17) played somewhere
near his previous form to score 45 points, while Owen Walkley (12) also
showed some good form following a long spell of poor form to sign for 40
points.
Near pins went to Jonathan & George with 2.
Thanks to Keow & Ray for their support over the past 3+ years, providing
golf as a service to PSC members and visitors in the Lake Mabprachan area.
All the golfers join me in wishing them the best for the future, whatever
path they may choose.
Our new venue is now the Rendezvous Restaurant & Bar on Siam Country Club
Road. Similar conditions will apply at our new venue to Mulligans Lakeside,
where we will play golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday, with Rendezvous
hosting prompt presentations on both days. As a PSC affiliated venue we will
continue to welcome ALL golfers, including ladies & seniors who have opted
for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries.
Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

The Captain makes it a double
The Billabong Golf Society

Grieg Ritchie, Arab Russell and Lot Philp
(front) with the departing Perth boys in the background.
Monday, March 18, Treasure Hill -
Stableford
It was a slow ride up Route 331 to Treasure Hill today but we got there in
the end, with 4 group’s all hoping we would get in before the rain. The
caddies had told us that the rain comes every day at 1.30 p.m. and they were
right; the last group got a couple of holes behind and got wet playing the
eighteenth!
The course was in great condition but the greens, unlike Treasure Hill, were
quite slow. Normally for a downhill putt here you have to hit the ball with
the shadow of the putter but not today, you actually had to hit the ball.
It was goodbye to the last of the Perth boys as they left Tuesday for
Phuket, and then home to Australia. It was also Arab’s swan song as he is
going home to look after his mum. See you next year mate!
The scores today were both good and bad. Coming in third was Kim Truscott
with 33 points, second on a count back was Dave Collier with 34, and in
first was Capt Bob also with 34.
There were two ‘2’s today, one from Steve Compton which stopped about 12
inches short of a hole in one and the other was on the hardest par three on
the course, the second hole, where Lot Philp was the girl who got that one -
well done!
Wednesday, March 20, Green Valley - Stableford
It was the captain’s day again today at Green Valley, and with four groups
playing we teed off early. Once again it was a really hot day out there but
the course was in great condition as usual and we got around in under four
hours.
We said goodbye to Ray Thirtle and Steve Seltzer after the day’s play as
they are going home to Canada and England.
Coming in fourth today was Bob Finley with 33 points, third was Martin Hayes
with 34, and second on a count back was Owen Walkley with 37. As stated at
the start of this report, it was the Captain’s day out with 37 point’s
taking the honours on a count back. Back at the bar the bell was rung so
everyone got a drink out of the winnings.
No ‘2’s again today unbelievable really.
Friday, March 22, The Emerald - Stableford
It was down to Emerald today for our Friday game and boy was it hot there! I
think JJ Harney’s shirt went from blue to a darker shade of black after he
had walked 3 holes. Despite the heat, the going was quite fast and we were
around in just a little over four hours.
The course is starting to show a little wear and tear as they are waiting
for the rain. Some of the greens were a bit ordinary with very dry and sandy
patches on them, but still enjoyable to play.
Only one 2 today and well done Cottee. Also welcome to Wes Rado and his good
mate Ian Jones and as it was Ian’s 60th birthday he got a Billabong golf
shirt as a gift. He was also in the prizes, coming third on a 3-way count
back with 39 points. Bob Philp took second place, also on 39 points, but the
winner with an equal score was JJ Harney who edged the 19, 18, 17, back nine
split over Ian and Bob.
Back at the bar there was a bell ring or two and some good cheer.
Note: If you are looking for a game with a friendly bunch of golfers, call
Bob on 082 204 3411 or come to the bar - just turn left before going under
the arch heading to Siam Old Course and we are 200 yards on the right.

Compton & Parish share the spoils
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Tuesday winners - Brian Parish & Steve
Compton.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, March 19, Mountain Shadow – Stableford
This course has become a standard on the Tuesday listings and we usually go
there once a month. The players all like it so on this day we had a good
turnout.
After arriving there, it was a very quick change and down to the start.
Being a bit late I told our three-ball to go on ahead and tee off first,
that they did, so to follow them we played off the white tees, or ‘Mickey
Mouse Tees’, so we expected to have some good scores.
The course was in its normal good condition and we did not find the trees
too often. The greens were very good, but not as tricky as they used to be,
and this made for a decent day putting. We did have quite a bit of wind, but
it is expected here.
Round over it was back to Bert’s for the results. In the A Flight, 0 to 18,
the winner was Brian Parish with 40 points ahead of Keichi Kasami in second
with 38 points. In third we had Mark West with 37 points and we had a
four-way count back on 36 points that saw Mashi Kaneta in fourth and Landis
Brooks, Mike Jackson and Richard Kubicki just missing out.
In the B Flight, Steve Compton won with 40 points, a fine 25 points on the
back nine, ahead of a count back on 36 points that saw Dick Warberg in
second and Rita Zoebeli in third. In fourth was Jim Ferris with 35 points on
count back over Max Bracegirdle.
Near Pins: Doug Maiko (2), Keichi Kasami (2)

Hoek heads Green Valley field with net 65
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

The Aussie Amateur Tour Group.
Monday, March 18, Burapha - Stableford
Sixty players made the trip to Burapha to play the A and B courses from the
blue markers and a very special welcome went out to the Aussie Amateur
golfers from Perth who were playing in their inaugural event in conjunction
with the Outback: this consisted of four rounds of stroke-play contested
during the week.
Burapha had a big storm on Sunday and the evidence was very plain to see
with a large number of trees blown over and many bunkers with huge wash-outs
in them. The staff were very busy trying to clean up the damage and had done
a good job on the A course but still had a long way to go on the B. The
greens had been cut and the fairways were still good to play off.
The day was hot and humid and the biggest worry was the build-up of storm
clouds which would have delayed our finish but thankfully the storms went
around us.

Monday podium placers (from the left): Barney
Clarkson, Ed Butcher, Rod Crosswell, and Rosco Langoulant.
The best around of the day came from one
of the Aussie Amateurs, Sayer Gill, who shot a net 66 off a handicap of 18,
which is the equivalent of 42pts. The best the local boys could muster was
Geoff Simpson’s 38pts to win Div A by three from Charlie Ward (35) and Rod
Crosswell & Gary Hogg both with 34.
Rosco took Div B with 37, over the ever steady, John Player (36) and John
O’Keefe (35).
Div C went to Shane Crane on 35pts from Canadian, Greg LeBlanc with 32,
beating Barney Clarkson and Bob Lindborg on count back.
There were six ‘2’s from Robin Peach, Geoff Stimpson & Bob Finley (hole A3),
Graham Simpson, John Alchin & Bob Finley (hole B3)
Div A (0-14)
1st Geoff Stimpson (8) 38pts
2nd Charlie Ward (13) 35pts
3rd Rod Crosswell (13) 34pts
4th Gary Hogg (9) 34pts
Div B (15-19)
1st Rosco Langoulant (15) 37pts
2nd John Player (18) 36pts
3rd John O’Keefe (16) 35pts
4th Howard Marson (18) 35pts
Div C (20+)
1st Shane Crane (22) 35pts
2nd Greg LeBlanc (27) 32pts
3rd Barney Clarkson (25) 32pts
4th Bob Lindborg (20) 32pts
Tuesday, March 19, Khao Kheow - Stablefordd
28 Outbackers played A & B off the yellows today due to the greens being
sanded on C. The course was in good condition but the results didn’t reflect
this. Unfortunately we had a major hold up as it took us five hours to play
18 holes due to a four-ball of Indians but I knew that they would be slow as
the other night I went for an Indian and it took over two hours for the meal
to arrive. Oh well, there is always next time!
So to the golf, Dayle Hoek, one of the Aussie Tour boys, took some time out
to get some practice in before the second round of their major tournament,
which was at St. Andrews (Weds) and produced the right result, with the best
score of the day, 34pts, to win Div A from Andy Butts on 32.
Div B was won by Suzi Lawton, with a very ordinary 31pts but enough to beat
John Alchin and Jerry Quin on count back.
We said goodbye to Tony Adams, Martin Burbidge, Gary Hallawell & Lance
Robinson, all from Eastwood Golf Course in Victoria.
There were three ‘2’s from Stephen Mann (5th) and Lance Robinson & Jerry
Quin (17th).
Div A (0-12)
1st Dayle Hoek (12) 34pts
2nd Andy Butterworth (12) 32pts
3rd Perry See Hoe (0) 29pts
4th Martin Burbidge (9) 29pts
Div B (13+)
1st Suzi Lawton (20) 31pts
2nd John Alchin (15) 31pts
3rd Jerry Quin (18) 31pts
4th Rod Crosswell (13) 30pts
Wednesday, March 20, Siam Plantation - Stableford
Twenty-seven players went to Siam Plantation to play the Pineapple and Sugar
Cane courses as Tapioca is closed for some pretty serious renovations due to
a number of tees and all the greens have been heavily cored and sanded.
The course was in great condition but continues to be heavily watered, which
makes for little or no run and on a number of occasions plugged balls in the
fairways. The greens were great to putt on and the whole Siam experience is
fantastic, with great staff and caddies and they just make your day very
enjoyable, even if your golf is not great.
The course played a little short again and some of the longer, straighter
hitters certainly made the course pay and leading the way was Ron Dickie
with 42 points off his 7 handicap. Ron is certainly showing a love for the
course as he had the same score a month ago just before his return to work.
Peter LeNoury also played well for 41 points for second place and Martin
Burbidge was third with 37.
The division split was a bit one sided as there were five players on a
handicap of 12 which was exactly the cut line, so Div B ended up with 17 of
the 27 players. In Div B, the top score was 39pts by Rod Crosswell and he
won by two from Mark Campbell and Steve Poznanski with 35.
There were no ‘2’s.
Div A (0-11)
1st Ron Dickie (7) 42pts
2nd Peter LeNoury (11) 41pts
3rd Martin Burbidge (9) 37pts
4th Perry See Hoe (5) 34pts
Div B (12+)
1st Rod Crosswell (13) 39pts
2nd Mark Campbell (13) 37pts
3rd Steve Poznanski (12) 35pts
4th Anton Rowbottam (17) 35pts
Wednesday, March 20, Treasure Hill - Stableford
As well as Siam Plantation, another three groups went to the ever popular
Treasure Hill course, led today by Tim Knight. The yellow tee was the choice
of the day and Paul Greenaway (38pts), playing off an unusually high
handicap (10) for him, made the most of it to romp in by seven shots over
Mark Riggall with 31 and Barney & Hoggy both on 30.
There were two ‘2’s, both on the 6th, from Paul Greenaway & Tim Knight.
1st Paul Greenaway (10) 38pts
2nd Mark Riggall (14) 31pts
3rd Barney Clarkson (25) 30pts
4th Gary Hogg (9) 30pts
Wednesday, March 20, St. Andrews - Stroke
The inaugural Aussie Amateur Tour is the brainchild of Matt Timbrell and Ed
Butcher who have put together a pro style tournament, featuring four rounds
of stroke-play. It’s a tough format for amateurs, even though it is spread
over six days, everybody knows about three or four day stableford comps but
this is hard work.
The first round was at Burapha on Monday, with Gill Sayer winning the day
with a net 66 but today was a different story as they headed off to the par
74, St. Andrews track. Even from the more forward white tee, this is a tough
course for medal play and it came as no real surprise that three of the
fifteen starters came to grief.
The best score came from Lee Grace with a net 75 to move to within eight
shots of the lead which was still held by Sayer Gill on a two round total of
147. Behind Sayer were three players all on 153.
Friday, March 22, Green Valley - Stableford
It was another big day at Green Valley with 49 players, even without the
many regular players that were playing in the PSC Charity Classic at
Burapha. The day was hot and humid but thankfully we had a little breeze for
most of the day.
The course is in good condition, especially the greens and fairways but some
of the tees need maintenance and it looks like they are going to do
something to the tees but as to what and how effective it will be, remains
to be seen. They have closed the tees on the 11th hole and created a
temporary tee on a slope nearby, which is not good but the tees that they
have closed have only been sanded, no repairs to the bare areas just more
sand on sand.
When we played Siam Plantation on Wednesday, they were renewing some tees on
the Tapioca nine, they took off the turf, took off old soil and thatch,
brought in new soil, shaped and levelled and replaced the turf all before we
had finished playing. It shows a different level of professionalism and
ultimately good tees.
Back to the golf, which was slow for most of the day due to a four-ball of
walkers in front that refused to let our groups through, but that’s the lack
of etiquette we often see in Thailand and no marshall to be seen to gee them
up!
The Aussie Amateurs were with us again today for the third round of their
four-round tournament and one of their guys, Dayle Hoek scored the best
round of the day, a net 65 in their comp which converted to 43 stableford
points to win Div A and to sweep into the lead after three days on 218.
Green Valley regular, Peter LeNoury, was second on 39.
In Div B, Bob Finley’s 36 was enough for the win from “Race2Bkk” leader
Murray Hart in second with 35. Tim Knight took Div C with only 34pts from
his rival and good friend, John Player (33) whilst Dave Coller won Div D
with 39pts from Barney Clarkson (36), who was flying home to Aus later that
night.
There were four ‘2’s from Martin Kingswood (4th), Dayle Hoek (9th) and Svenn
Ole Lund & Gary Arthur (12th).
Div A (0-12)
1st Dayle Hoek (12) 43pts
2nd Peter LeNoury (11) 39pts
3rd Kerry Beck (9) 38pts
4th Dennis Pelly (10) 37pts
Div B (13-16)
1st Bob Finley (14) 36pts
2nd Murray Hart (15) 35pts
3rd Ed Butcher (15) 35pts
4th Martin Kingswood (14) 34pts
Div C (17-22)
1st Tim Knight (22) 34pts

4th Kevin McEntee (7) 36pts
B Flight
1st Danny Lawson (12) 40pts
2nd Tony Gliddon (13) 40pts
3rd Terry Mangan (15) 37pts
4th Michael Goggin (15) 37pts
C Flight
1st Freddy Starbeck (21) 40pts
2nd Gary Roche (18) 36pts
3rd John Warren (17) 36pts
4th Jean LaRoche (18) 35pts
Near Pins: No 3 Chaten Patel, No 5 Mark Bonner, No 10 Jim Brackett,
No 16 Freddy Starbeck
We all know March 17 is St Patrick’s Day, so the organization committee
decided it would be a nice gesture to play Sunday’s St. Pat’s bash at St.
Andrews. This suited Danny Lawson, Tony Gliddon and Freddy Starbeck down to
the ground as they were all co-men of the match with an excellent 40 points
apiece.
Freddy Starbeck and Danny Lawson.
Freddy’s C Flight winning score was four clear of Irishman
Gerry Roche and Blackpool’s John Warren as they tied for the flight silver,
with Gerry prevailing on the count back, as did Jean LaRoche over the
unlucky Merle Humphreys, both on 35 points.
B Flight provided two co-men of the match as Danny Lawson edged Tony Gliddon
via the count back to take the top spot. Terry ‘Pork chop’ Mangan did the
same to Michael Goggin as they filled the two remaining podium places.
A bunch of five of the more accomplished lot vied for the top spot as they
all returned solid even par rounds. When the divots had settled, Aussie ace
Bob Watson emerged from the pile-up on the top of the podium followed by
Blackpool’s Steve Mulberry in second, Thierry Petrement third, and Kevin
‘the hermit’ McEntee in fourth spot. There was no podium step for Peter ‘the
right honorable’ LeNoury.
Kevin McEntee, Max Scott, John Beshoff, Gerry Roche, Mick Beresford and
Bruce Walters shared an excellent ‘2’s pot.
Back at the ranch it really was party time coupled with an excellent buffet
and the guest appearance of Christy ‘Detective Thomson of TinTin fame’
Knight.
Monday, March 18, Crystal Bay A&B - Stableford
A Flight
1st Peter Hynard (13) 37pts
2nd Kevin McEntee (7) 35pts
B Flight
1st Freddy Starbeck (20) 42pts
2nd Colin Davis (16) 33pts
While Sunday night’s St. Patrick’s Day party was unbelievable, it did serve
to dent the golfing ardor of the society come Monday morning. A small field
took on the always demanding layout at Crystal Bay and found it to be in as
fine a condition as can be remembered.
Those that did manage to turn out were treated to another Freddy Star
spectacular but this was not very comical as Freddy Starbeck followed
Sunday’s co-man of the match 40 points with a tremendous 42 points for man
of the match and top spot in B Flight. (Unnamed sources have indicated that
Freddy has been having a few lessons with Pattaya’s top teaching pro Mike
McClarren). A distant nine holes in arrears was ‘the Donkey’, no doubt
suffering from a touch of the Gaelic.
In a return to more traditional levels of performance in the senior circuit
the two top places went to two old work horses, Peter ‘The Right Honorable’
Hynard 37 points and yawn Kevin some body or other on 35 points.
Freddy ended the show with a ‘2’, along with Pen Caruthers.
Wednesday, March 20, Silky Oak - Stableford
A Flight
1st Pen Caruthers (12) 40pts
2nd Matt Doyle (12) 37pts
3rd Thierry Petrement (11) 36pts
B Flight
1st Andre Fortis (19) 37pts
2nd Freddy Starbeck (20) 36pts
3rd Merle Humphreys (19) 33pts
Pen Caruthers was man of the match with his outstanding 40 point effort,
good enough to provide him a three point cushion over Co. Offaly Bandit Matt
‘Dillon’ Doyle. Matt did card a 2 to ease the pain. Every body’s favourite,
Monsieur Thierry Petrement rounded out the flight with a steady even par
round.
Top man in B Flight was Andre Fortis with a very creditable 37 points.
Freddy ‘Star’ Beck foreshadowed a week on form with his third pay window
visit this week. Freddy has been offered a one way ticket to a destination
of his choice by the society regulars. Bulls eye Merle Humphreys closed the
flight on 33 points.
Terry Mangan, Colin Davis, and Arthur Busch shared the ‘2’s pot with Matt.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3
near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add
your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

42 points for a proud Peter
PSC golf from The Golf Club

Micky Beresford, Peter
LeNoury and John Walsh.
Steve Ellison
Monday, March 18, Green Valley (white tees) –
Stableford
1st Peter LeNoury (11) 42pts
2nd Mick Beresford (18) 40pts
3rd John Walsh (19) 38pts
It was another full field of 40 golfers for our regular Monday venue of
Green Valley, and the weather could not have been better. Captain Phil
had the groups out smoothly as usual, and we were happy they allowed us
an extra tee time at the last minute due to a few late entries the night
before.
Peter LeNoury was feeling in fine form and started his round with 20
points. That’s one heck of a start, but could he finish as strong in the
afternoon sun? By the 15th things were looking good and at the end of
the round he added another 22 on the back side to give him his second
best round this year. Well played Peter, there’s nothing better than a
strong finish!
Sorry Micky, on most days that 40 points would easily have been good
enough for a win, but today you must settle for only second.
Visiting Englishman John Walsh has hopefully had his spirits lifted a
bit by today’s result. I think this is his best round this trip, and
maybe he can put the England rugby loss to Wales behind him now. Great
scoring guys!

Ken Aihara with Ian
Ashenden and Captain Phil.
Wednesday, March 20, Greenwood
(white tees) - Stableford
1st Ken Aihara (6) 40pts
2nd Ian Ashenden (0) 39pts
3rd Phil Smedley (12) 33pts
It was “Beat the Pro” day at Greenwood today, courtesy of our great mate
and great sport Ian Ashenden. This was a day to remember for our
visiting mate. Englishman Ian is the Senior Golf Coach of the best golf
course in Malaysia, the Kuala Lumpur G. & C.C. and where they just held
the Asian Tour event of The Maybank Malaysian Open this past weekend.
See their website: www.klgcc.com
Ian, who obviously plays off scratch, has christened Ken as “Up and Down
Ken” and he stated that he has never seen an amateur… or pro for that
matter, play his short game as well as Ken played against Ian on this
day. Ken had 2 lovely chip-ins from off the green to leave Ian feeling
just a little bit stunned. This brings back memories of Ian and Mark
Haffenden getting edged out by Serge last year!

Mike Newbert & Brett Chan with Ken Aihara
& Phil Smedley at Burapha.
Kenny-chan is a very consistent
golfer, no easy feat around here, and if you have been reading this
column with any regularity, he is known not to be a long hitter of the
ball. He does however make up for that by having a short game that is
second to none. There’s hope for us all! Captain Phil rounded out the
3-ball and had a very entertaining afternoon indeed.
If you ever have the chance to play golf in K-L, look up our mate Ian
and play the best course that nation has to offer, and buy him a beer
for commiserations!
Friday, March 22, Burapha – PSC Charity Classic
Well, we just had to have a quick note of congratulations to our lads
from The Golf Club after our 2-man scramble teams of Phil Smedley and
Ken Aihara (63.8) took third place, and Mike Newbert and Brett Chan
(65.2) took fifth in the annual PSC Charity Classic. Well played lads,
ya done us proud! For full details, please see the big write-up on the
PSC Charity Classic on page 54.
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We usually play on
Monday, Wednesday and Friday so come join us for a seriously fun day

Heavy hitting at The Haven
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, March 18, The Emerald -
Stableford
CSS 72
1st Mike Korney (18) 42pts
2nd Yasuo Suzuki (12) 37pts
3rd Markku Tynell (25) 37pts
4th Daryl Burkett (15) 36pts
5th Yukio Kikuchi (19) 36pts
6th Peter Skinner (10) 36pts
At the same time as the numbers of players are going down, the scores
are spiraling up with all the winners in the week clocking up forty
points or more and one having a special handicap adjustment under the
Exceptional Scoring Reduction (ESR) system which came into operation at
the beginning of March. An explanation of the system can be found on the
IPGC web site at www.ipgc.org under handicaps. The system will ensure
that players who score better than four or more than their handicap
allows, twice in a twelve month period, will be possibly facing an
additional reduction to their handicap.

Mike
Korney.
The day’s winner came in for review, having won with a similar score
only the previous week, with the result that his handicap was further
reduced by an additional two strokes, but Mike Korney was very pleased
with the end result having been trying extremely hard to get down into
the first division for some time during this visit. Underlining Mike’s
recent consistency was the detail that his last four nine’s were all
completed at three under handicap for 21 points each.
Mike’s six under return was good enough by five clear to win on the day,
leaving Yasuo Suzuki and Markku Tynell to go through a count back to
settle second place. Yasuo Easily won that count back with a stunning
gross 35 over the back nine which netted 25 points to Markku’s 20.

Trevor
Schirmer.
Daryl Burkett took fourth spot after also winning a count back, this one
between three players and winning with 23 points as Yukio Kikuchi took
5th with 21 and Peter Skinner 6th with 18.
There were two 2’s in the first division with one each from Yasuo Suzuki
and Erik Donnestad and similarly in the second division with one apiece
from Yukio Kikuchi and Mike Korney.
Prior to the presentations of the prizes there were welcome backs for
Daryl Burkett, Paul Hartley and Jesse Harris together with farewells for
Erik Donnestad and Peter Skinner.
Wednesday, March 20, Pattana B & C (yellow
tees) - Stableford
CSS 70
1st Glenn Eldershaw (21) 42pts
2nd Trevor Schirmer (18) 41pts
3rd Mike Hill (22) 40pts
4th Terry Hodgkiss (23) 40pts
5th Daryl Burkett (15) 38pts
6th Alan Hanlon (14) 38pts
Another fine day with light winds created the opportunity for some more
heavy scoring with the day’s winner once more returning a six under
handicap card - but this time with the competition having been set to
play from the forward yellow tees, there were several players in close
attendance at the final count-up at the scorer’s table.

Yasuo
Suzuki.
In the event Glenn Eldershaw’s excellent score held up to win by a
single point as Trevor Schirmer showed that he is well on the way to
total rehabilitation from his knee surgery with a five under return;
this was his best score for nearly two years and gave him second place.
Mike Hill and Terry Hodgkiss had to be separated by count back with Mike
taking third with a better 22 to Terry’s 19 for fourth place.
Daryl Burkett also won a count back over Alan Hanlon, taking fifth with
a better 20 to 19.
All this high scoring resulted in the CSS for the day unusually reducing
to 70 over a layout that usually shows an increase in the standard
scratch basis for the competitions.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Alan Hanlon cleaned out the
first division with his solo effort on the 170 yard B 7 hole.
Friday, March 22, Phoenix (Mountain & Ocean) -
Stableford
CSS 72
1st Yasuo Suzuki (12) 40pts
2nd Hal Hart (24) 38pts
3rd Alan Hanlon (14) 38pts
4th Trevor Schirmer (18) 37pts
5th Alwyne Burley (15) 34pts
With the March weekly visit set for Phoenix once again and fine weather
promised for the day, a good turnout took off for the Mountain and Ocean
courses where as usual they were found to be in excellent condition, as
had been the two courses earlier in the week.

Hal Hart.
Starting on the Ocean nine, where as usual the count backs would be
contested, it was important to get off to a good start as did Yasuo
Suzuki who garnered 22 points, setting himself up for a win following
his second place earlier in the week.
Slipping into second place, having taken good note of the advice freely
offered in the bar back at The Haven following the previous outing, Hal
Hart needed to win a count back over Alan Hanlon, which he did with a
better 20 to 19 to leave Alan without a win during this visit and having
to face the prospect of several inches of snow on his return home to not
so sunny England, that is if the airports have reopened by then. No
doubt his complaints of the heat in Pattaya will soon be forgotten as
they are replaced by dreams of returning to at least 30 degrees warmer
as soon as possible.
Trevor Schirmer was once again to be found on the podium in fourth place
with a score under handicap, leaving Alwyne Burley to round it out in
fifth.
Once again there were no 2’s in the second division but Yasuo Suzuki
swept up the first division pool after having a bit of a scare when he
was told there had been a few other birdies returned during the day in
the first division, but much to his relief he learned that none of them
were on par threes and he was able to finish his beer without
hiccupping.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact
mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13,
between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is
arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should
be there by 8.15 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you

Baldwin best
Phoenix Members Golf Society
Tuesday’s winners pose with staff
members at The Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
Just like the original Mike Baldwin (Of Coronation Street
fame), our Richard Baldwin insists on having the last word. The only
player to play to his handicap today, Tuesday, March 19, Richard
returned a fine 36 points to win by one from Peter Harris (35
points), the other in form player at present. In third place was
Sergio Poggi, also with 35 points but his back nine score was
inferior to Peter’s.
Mukesh Thakker managed 33 points even though in his own words, “I
played rubbish”. However, there was not enough money in the pot to
give provide a fourth place on the podium.
Most players today suffered the fate of low scoring and this was
mainly due to the fast, difficult, but very true greens at Phoenix.
Three putting is very common on our greens. However, it has to be
said that the course is in great shape and it is truly a pleasure to
play.
With the high season well and truly over now, we enjoy reasonably
clear, quick rounds of golf with no hassle from the pesky tourists!
Couple that with returning to our favourite restaurant to enjoy a
beer or two - life is great here in fun city!
Justice prevailed for Mukesh Thakker, as with one near pin not won
his name came out of the hat as a lucky draw prize winner. Other
near pins went to Sergio Poggi, Richard Baldwin & Peter Harris.
The lucky draw prizes (donated by our hosts The Relax Bar) went to
Stuart Gordon (free massage), Tom Musial (free drink) and Joris
Goetschalckx (50 baht).
Shot of the day went to Stuart Gordon who hit two superb shots on
the par-five 18th that left him with just a sand iron to get on the
green in three (this was after the opposition had all missed the
green in 3). Stuart thinned his third shot which hit the cart
direction sign and rebounded back to where he had hit from. Needless
to say his next shot went sailing way over the green and that was
him out of the hole. Cost him and his partner a double or nothing
bet. Luckily I was not his partner!
From 1st April the guest rate at Phoenix will be 800 baht green fee
on Tuesday’s and 1,000 baht on Friday’s. Anyone interested in
joining our little group (or sea fishing trips), please call me on
087 091 7565.

Wanta & Max sparkle at Crystal Bay
PSC Golf from The Growling Swan

Max Bracegirdle & Wanta.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, March 18, Crystal Bay A & B - Stableford
Once more an early tee time meant an earlier than usual departure time and
all but one of the original 26 players signed up made it on time. As we
assembled at the Growling Swan before the journey to Crystal Bay we were
happy to welcome back Bob Akapita, this time for 2 weeks R & R from his work
at Gove in the Northern Territory of Australia, and his good mate and fellow
Aussie Rod Cockle, who now spends most of his time in Northern Thailand.
We got away right on time at 8.00 am and headed north on Sukhumvit through
the Monday morning traffic encountering the usual traffic light delays
departing Pattaya and in Sriracha but managed to arrive at the golf course
50 minutes later. Without too much early activity the course was not busy
and as we were allocated the A & B nines we sent our first four-ball away 5
minutes behind schedule at 9.25 am with the groups in front of us at least 2
holes ahead.

Niall Stuart, JC Lhoste &
Ebrahim.
The golf course was in great shape as
usual with the greens immaculate; in fact they would have to be amongst the
best around. The weather was perfect although quite hot but thanks to a
breeze that was at times fairly strong conditions were very pleasant. After
getting through the A nine without any delays we did slow down a bit on the
B nine as the weather hotted up which resulted in us completing the round in
four hours & twenty five minutes.
We were able to have 2 grades with five podium spots in each. A Grade was
for handicaps 0 to 18 and B Grade for 19 and over. We had nearest the pins
on all the par threes and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
Wanta was the winner in A Grade with a fine 40 points and with 2 golfers on
36 points a count back was needed which resulted in Martin Todd (21 point
back nine) taking second spot from your writer, Peter Blackburn (18 point
back nine) in third place. Another count back was required to separate the 2
golfers on 35 points and it was Anna (18 point back nine) who finished
fourth ahead of Marco Beer (17 point back nine) in fifth place.
In a welcome return to form it was Max “Corsets” Bracegirdle who had an
excellent 41 points to easily win the B Grade by 10 points from Geri Crilly.
With 3 players on 30 points the count back resulted in Colin Farady (19
point back nine) finishing third from Frank “Toy Story” Donnelly (16 point
back nine) in fourth place and JC Lhoste (14 point back nine) completing the
podium.
A Flight (0-18)
1st Wanta (12) 40pts
2nd Martin Todd (9) 36pts
3rd Peter Blackburn (11) 36pts
4th Anna (12) 35pts
5th Marco Beer (17) 35pts
B Flight (19+)
1st Max Bracegirdle (27) 41pts
2nd Geri Crilly (27) 31pts
3rd Colin Faraday (19) 30pts
4th Frank Donnelly (23) 30pts
5th JC Lhoste (23) 30pts
Near Pins: A5 – Kae, A8 – Marco Beer, B4 – Wanta, B6 – Wanta
Long Putts: A9 – Dave Neal, B9 – Mike Gosden
The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score
on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was narrowly won
on a count back by Wendy Bernek from the much relieved Dick “Reverend”
Braimbridge. Martin Todd took Deefa for the usual walk and collected many
donations for the needy in Pattaya from our ever generous Growling Swan
golfers.
Back at the Growling Swan there was a very good crowd and the usual hard
luck stories but mostly celebrating another great golf day on a first class
golf course amongst excellent company.
Thursday, March 21, The Emerald - Stableford
Our record attendance to date was 34 and when we had 40 golfers signed up it
appeared that that previous figure would be “smashed”. Even after there were
3 late withdrawals we were still left with a new Growling Swan record of 37
for the day and four mini vans were required to ferry them to the course.
As we met at the bar beforehand we welcomed Karl Baecker from Germany, Bill
McGarvie from Canada, Chris Woods & Gary O’Laughlin from Brisbane, Andrew
Allen returning from a couple of weeks in Melbourne and veteran Ted Morris
joining us once again. It was sadly time to say farewell to another veteran,
Don Richardson who will shortly be returning to Ireland and Chris, Gary &
Mick who are off back to Australia.
The Emerald was the designated course for the day and we headed off South,
departing the GS right on schedule at 8.30 am. The traffic was moving well
down Sukhumvit and after the usual “crawl” through Bang Chang we arrived at
the golf course after a 45 minute journey to find a fair bit of activity but
no major delays anticipated.
Our Tee Time was 10.00 am and our first group, a three-ball, got away right
on time but with a few “not so quick” groups directly ahead we settled in
for a leisurely round of golf on a day that was shaping up to be a “hot
one”. The course was in very good shape and although some of the greens did
not look too attractive they were in the main firm and true.
After two hours & five minutes we had a half-way break whilst waiting to tee
off at number ten and then continued our round in fairly hot & sticky
conditions. We had the help of ample liquid refreshments and although the
pace did slow somewhat we completed the round in four hours & twenty five
minutes. Some of us found the course challenging but others had no trouble
recording good scores and we look forward to returning soon.
We were able to have 2 grades with six podium spots in each. A Grade was for
handicaps 0 to 22 and B Grade for 23 and over. We had nearest the pins on
all the par threes and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
The popular Ebrahim was the winner in A Grade with a fine 40 points, with
Mike “Hunter” Gosden in second place one point further back. The 2 Thai
ladies came third & fourth with Suparp “Anna” Korboon on 38 points and Wanta
Dacha on 37 points, with Jayson Schembri fifth on 36. There were 3 players
on 33 points vying for sixth spot and the count back saw Bill McGarvie (17
point back nine) just beating Martin Todd (16 point back nine) and your
writer, Peter Blackburn (15 point back nine).
With 2 golfers on 41 points, a count back saw JC Lhoste (24 point back nine)
winning the B Grade from in-form Duangjai “Kae” Tusagad (19 point back
nine), with Andrew “Turtle” Allen having his best ever score of 40 points
and finishing third. Another count back was required to sort out fourth &
fifth and it was Irishman Geri Crilly (23 point back nine) who prevailed
over Graham “Grunter” Buckingham (16 point back nine) with Russell Calcutt
having his first ever podium finish with 34 points to finish sixth.
A Flight (0-22)
1st Ebrahim (17) 41pts
2nd Mike Gosden (13) 40pts
3rd Anna (12) 38pts
4th Wanta (12) 37pts
5th Jayson Schembri (18) 36pts
6th Bill McGarvie (9) 33pts
B Flight (23+)
1st JC Lhoste (23) 41pts
2nd Duangjai Tusagad (24) 41pts
3rd Andrew Allen (36) 40pts
4th Geri Crilly (27) 35pts
5th Graham Buckingham (25) 35pts
6th Russell Calcutt (36) 34pts
Near Pins: 7th – Ted Morris, 13th – Ebrahim, 15th – Mike Gosden
Long Putts: 9th – Alain Taddei, 18th – Duangjai Tusagad
The Growling Swan NAGA Award was narrowly won on a count back by Niall
Stuart, who of course accepted the cap in fine style. Martin Todd took Deefa
for the usual walk and collected many donations for the needy in Pattaya
from our ever generous Growling Swan golfers.
It had been yet another terrific day’s golf on a challenging (for some) golf
course and a load of fun for all.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes players of any persuasion – low & high
handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play Mondays
& Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker Bar) in Soi
Chaiyapoon at 8.00 a.m. with transport departing at 8.30 a.m. For bookings
or more information please contact Peter on 0806 351 386 or email to

Greig in pole position for monthly title
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch

Colin Greig relaxes before another successful
round.
Monday, March 18, Royal Lakeside – Stableford
We had a good turnout of 21 golfers today for our visit to the Royal
Lakeside course, on a bright, breezy morning. When we arrived at the course
we were able to tee off without delay, but it was immediately obvious that
the breeze was much stronger here than in Pattaya, and it was to prove
troublesome all day.
The course was in great shape as usual, but the greens are always difficult,
so the expectation was that anyone playing to their handicap would probably
be the winner. The only criticism one can make about this course is that
there’s too much sand in the bunkers, and with the strong breeze they were
very much in play today, as were the many water hazards.
In the event Keiichi Kasami was the only golfer to better his handicap,
taking the honours in the A Flight, ahead of Colin Greig and Mark Stanley.
There was a 3-way tie on 33 points in the B Flight with Lee Butler (time you
got back into the A Flight) winning the count back ahead of newcomer Drake
Mooser and Jerry Wasselenkoff.
A Flight
1st Keiichi Kasami (9) 37pts
2nd Colin Greig (hcp. 11) 34pts
3rd Mark Stanley (11) 32pts
B Flight
1st Lee Butler (17) 33pts
2nd Drake Mooser (24) 33pts
3rd Jerry Waselenkoff (19) 33pts
Near Pins: Jerry Waselenkoff, Colin Greig (2).
Least Putts: Drake Mooser (28)
Wednesday, March 20, Treasure Hill – Stableford
A large field of 26 golfers today for our regular visit to the notoriously
difficult Treasure Hill course.
The course has been showing continuous signs of improvement over the last
several months, so it was somewhat of a surprise to find that the fairways
and greens were in the worst condition in recent memory. It appears that,
for whatever reason, the grass has not been cut for some time and patches of
rough were truly punishing, just a few feet off the fairways and greens.
The greens themselves were slow and inconsistent, so conditions were against
good scoring, and some horrendous scores were returned by the higher
handicap players.
Difficult conditions suit the better golfers, so it was no surprise that
Keith Smithson returned the best score of the day with 38 points to win the
A Flight. Fellow players were quick to point out that Keith had a somewhat
fortunate start to the round, having hit two trees on the par 5 first hole
before chipping in from 110 yards for par!
Mike Lloyd has seen his scores steadily improving since his return, and
produced his best performance so far this visit, to take the honours in the
B flight.
The putting competition was won by Mark Stanley with an impressive total of
26 putts on a day when most players struggled on the slow greens.
A Flight
1st Keith Smithson (2) 38pts
2nd Colin Greig (11) 36pts
3rd Mark West (13) 32pts
B Flight
1st Mike Lloyd (15) 35pts
2nd Raleigh Gosney (16) 33pts
3rd Tore Elliassen (15) 32pts
Near Pins: Tore Elliasen, Mashi Kaneta (2).
Least Putts: Mark Stanley (26)
Friday, March 22, Bangpra – Stableford
A busy day at Bangpra today, and we had to sit around for 30 minutes past
our scheduled tee time, before we were allowed to tee off. Eventually all
six groups got away, but it was a long, slow, and at times very hot day,
with several players complaining that they wilted on the back nine.
One visitor, who shall remain nameless, scored 17 points on the outward nine
and the grand total of 4 points on the inward nine, proudly taking
possession of the wooden spoon.
Colin Greig took the honours in the A Flight on a count back over Gerry
Cooney, with Keith Smithson taking third place also on a count back over 3
other players with 34 points.
Reg Smart recorded his third win of the year in the B Flight, and our two
visiting lady golfers khun Anna and khun Wanta took three of the four near
pin prizes between them.
It was a successful week for Colin Greig with an outright win and two
overall second place finishes, giving him an almost unassailable lead in
race for the Golfer of the Month title, with three games remaining.
A Flight
1st Colin Greig (11) 35pts
2nd Gerry Cooney (13) 35pts
3rd Keith Smithson (2) 34pts
B Flight
1st Reg Smart (30) 34pts
2nd Gordon Melia (19) 33pts
3rd Raleigh Gosney (16) 32pts
Near Pins: Gerry Cooney, Anna, Wanta (2).
Least Putts: Keiichi Kasami (28)
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play out of
The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and almost
opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but
competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new
players are always welcome. Contact “Buff” on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663
for all enquiries. You can find all the news, schedules and results on our
website at www.bunkersociety.com.

Flello finds the winning formula
Jomtien golf with the IPGC

Lindsay Phillips, Jim
Connelly, Harry Vincenzi and Gerry Cooke.
Monday, March 18, Pleasant Valley -
Stableford
It was our first visit here for some considerable time but they were
offering a reduced green fee for groups of over 32 players so we gave it a
try. There were no complaints afterwards regarding the condition of the
course and the majority enjoyed the round and will look forward to a further
visit here over the next five weeks.
Randy Flello, playing off 21, came in with 39 points to win division 2 ahead
of his playing partner Don Head who was six points behind in second. Ernst
Baumann took third place after beating Jim Connelly on a 12/11 back-nine
count back after they both came in with 31 points each.
Sid Crawley, back with us for a few weeks before the marriage up north, won
division 1 with 35 points and there were three scores of 34 next in: a
back-nine count back saw Chris Voller take second, Wichai Tanunsorn third
and Billy Fitzgerald just miss out.
Near pins went to Sid Crawley, Gerry Cooke, Don Head (2), Charlie
Charalambous and Randy Flello (2).
In the ‘2’s competition, Ernst Baumann birdied the eighth to take a rollover
in division 2 and Sid Ottaway did the same on the 13th for the only ‘2’ in
division 1 today.
Wednesday, March 20, Pattana - Stableford
There were 6 cancellations on the start sheet since Monday and four more
overnight and we were down to seven four-balls, but this caused no problems
with the organisation here today. As we arrived for our 10 a.m. tee-off time
we saw that the course was empty so we teed off 25 minutes ahead of
schedule, starting on the B course with the C to follow.
As we stood on the first tee it was very hot for this time of the day and
the caddies told us there had been torrential rain here the day before. Our
first group reached the fourth tee and found the fairways to be sodden, with
mud on the ball after every shot, so we employed the ‘pick ,clean and place’
ruling on the fairways and fringes from the fourth hole onwards.
Playing off the white tees and a 16 handicap, and with his best round for a
long time, the telephone box boy Dennis Scougal won division 1 with 38
points. Lindsay Phillips came home in second place one point behind and
there were huge cheers at the presentation at Siam Cats as Chris Voller beat
‘Speedy Gonzalez’, alias Bryan Rought on an 18/17 back nine count back after
they both came in with 35 points.
In his last game before returning home, Randy Flello won division 2 with 34
points after edging Glenn Martin on a 20/18 back-nine count back. Eiichi
Matsumoto beat John Walsh 18/17 on another count back to claim third spot
after they both returned scores of 31.
The Irish racehorse entrepreneur, Gerry Cooke, birdied C7 and Chris Voller
B3 to split the ‘2’s pot in division 1 while Kari Aarnio’s ten foot putt on
C2 was the only birdie ‘2’ in division 2.
Near pins were won by Tony Kay, Jerry Sweetnam, Harry Vincenzi, Randy
Flello, Eiichi Matsumoto (2) and Jeff Van Uffelen. On C2 in division 1,
Jerry Sweetnam and Bryan Rought were exactly the same distance from the pin
so they shared the pot on this hole.
Friday, March 22, Eastern Star – Stableford
It was an extremely hot day here, without any breeze at all, and these
conditions prevailed for most of the round. The Korean tourists have
disappeared now and with only one group out in front of us, our first
four-ball went round in just under four hours.
There were a few comments after the round that there is still work needed to
be done on the 13th and 18th greens. Our last game will be Friday March 29
and then a weeks closure here where we will be playing Greenwood on April 5,
and then back to Eastern Star on Monday 8th as it is a holiday with a 36
hole competition, including Friday 12th - all extra prizes for these two
games come courtesy of the rollover kitty.
The cut today was 8-16 in division 1 and Bill Bertram, scoring 22 points on
the back nine, won the division with 40 points. Chris Voller was second,
beating Karl Flood on a 17/16 back nine count back after they both scored 33
points.
John Walsh topped the division 2 standings with 35 points ahead of Frank
Kelly in second one point behind and Sid Ottaway took third on 32.
There were no ‘2’’s today so two rollovers in division 1 and one in division
1 to Eastern Star next Friday.
Finally, we said Bon Voyage this week to Jerry McCarthy.

Watson & Scott prevail at 117th PSC Charity Classic

The winning team - Bob Watson
and Max Scott with PSC President Tony Oakes (left) and PSC Golf Chairman Joe
Mooneyham (right).
Report by Nigel Cannon/ Photos by William Macey
Friday, March 22 - Burapha Golf Club
To arrange any golf tournament takes weeks of organization. To arrange a
major tournament, like today’s Charity Classic where there were prizes on
every hole, prizes for the top 10 pairs, sponsors to obtain, shirts to order
as well as negotiating for a golf course at an attractive price, with a
shotgun start and a buffet is no exception.
Add to all that the preparation of start sheets, which was a two-person
scramble, and the collecting of entry of fees, takes time and energy and
today PSC Golf Chairman, Joe Mooneyham, excelled himself with masterminding
the arrangements, with the help of the ever dependable Office Manager Khun
Mai. That provided 144 PSC members with a successful and profitable, for
charity, golf tournament.

Runners-up Max Bracegirdle and Stu Rifkin
flank PSC Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham.
On the day he was helped by fellow committee members -
President Tony, Charity Chair William (who also played) and Social Chair
Nigel. Their day started early for at 8 a.m. they were on the course
erecting sponsors signs and leaving the appropriate markers on each hole.
Many of those taking part arrived early, which was a relief to all
concerned, with Joe and Nigel on the registration desk and Tony and William
allocating the shirts, which were kindly provided by Chris Balzai of Sinto
Shirts.
As we expect at Burapha, the course was presented in pristine condition with
superb greens, closely mown fairways, hot and sunny conditions but with just
a slight breeze to keep the temperatures at a reasonable level - perfect
conditions in which to play golf.
With a full complement of 144 players, it was about 5 hours later that the
teams returned to the clubhouse and presented their scores to determine the
results. Then the sheets for the 20 technical prizes arrived to be recorded.

The 1st tee - let play begin!
Joe thanked all who participated in today’s tournament
with special thanks to the support of the sponsors, although many who have
been sponsors for a number of years, new sponsors were brought to the
attention of everyone present.
Special thanks went to the day’s hosts and in particular the Burapha General
Manager – Khun Mike – for the support of both Burapha and The Eastern
Seaboard Golf Association, with whom PSC have built up a firm relationship
over recent years. Many complimentary green fees were provided by the EGA
for which we were extremely grateful.
A special relationship has also been developed with Singha, a company that
supports many golf tournaments in Thailand, for today they provided the
winners with the magnificent Singha Golf Bags and many free drinks for
everyone. With their tremendous support of golf at all levels in Thailand,
this fascinating game will only become more popular in all regions.
During this time two lovely ladies, Wendy Chetland and Noi Emmerson, moved
around the tables selling raffle tickets for many splendid prizes that were
on offer, most provided by our generous sponsors. The winning ticket was to
receive 60% of the ticket sales.

2 lovely PSC raffle ticket
sellers.
Presentation time, as is usual at PSC events, saw Nigel
call everyone to order and introduce President Tony Oakes who congratulated
Joe for an excellent day and expressed his appreciation to all competitors.
Nigel then introduced Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham after asking all to
express their appreciation to Joe for the hard work he had put in to provide
another successful day, both for PSC members and PSC charities.
Prior to the prize presentation, Joe auctioned some pin flags from the
recent Thailand PGA tournament that had been signed by some top golfers –
Sergio, Bubba, Lee, Darren– again thanks to some hectic bidding a
substantial sum was added to the overall total.

Peter Blackburn - Growling
Swan.
Nigel then read out the winners of the technical prizes,
and as this was a ‘pairs’, the respective partner also got a prize which
were presented by Tony and Joe.
So to the final results – the top 10 pairs winning a prize.
Runners up were the team of Max Bracegirdle and Stu Rifkin with a net 62.8
off their combined handicap of 8.2, losing by just 0.2 to the winning team
of Bob Watson and Max Scott with 62.2 net of their 1.4 handicap. They were
welcomed with great applause for an excellent score.
The evening was not over yet! Some great prizes were presented to the
winners of the raffle including Pro V golf balls and fairway woods donated
by Pattaya City Golf.
So ended another successful Charity Classic where there were many winners –
the main one being charity as more than 400,000 baht was raised through this
event.
In addition to those mentioned above, special thanks must go to those that
were sponsors on the day.

Bob Newell - Players Lounge.
Platinum Sponsors: Singha, EGA, Sinto.
Gold Sponsor: Jakalope.
Bronze Sponsor: Pattaya City Golf.
Hole Sponsors: Lewiinski’s Hotel, Drunken Duck, YWCA, Outback Golf
Bar, The Players Lounge, Pattaya Mail, The Golf Club, Growling Swan, Casa
Pascal Restaurant, Classroom “A” Go-Go, TQ Masters, Links Hotel and Golf
Bar, Take It Easy Rentals, Jesters Care For Kids, Walter Baechli, The Beaver

Battah bests Dalton on Bangpakong count back
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Andy Rich
Hello everybody, I have returned from my extended stay in the frozen
wastelands, a.k.a. England. Two months and there was only one decent day
when the brass monkeys didn’t put in an appearance, it was truly grim.
To say I am glad to be back is the understatement of the year. My only
compensation was to still be there to witness first-hand the St. Patrick’s
Day Massacre; no I am not talking about Wales trouncing England at Rugby but
my football team Brighton & Hove Albion smacking the backsides of arch
rivals Crystal Palace 3-0 and sending them on their way, a day to remember
indeed.
Top
lady of the week - Mod Chaviraksa.
So it is back to the balmy days of Thailand and my first duty
is to thank Alan Evans for stepping in with the report writing whilst I was
away. I hope it wasn’t too onerous Alan.
Looking at the scores for this last week it looks as though the standard is
remaining high although the numbers are dwindling with the High Season
approaching its last couple of weeks.
On Monday, 18th March, the TRGG headed off to play the always tricky
Treasure Hill and although it was a very tight finish none of the field
bettered their handicap. Andrew Curtis (18) finished on a commendable 35pts,
just beating Fergus Brennan (12) on count back, also on 35 pts. John Goudge
(6) was only just behind in third place finishing on 34pts.
Tuesday, 19th March, was time for the slightly longer journey to Bangpakong
to play one of my favourite courses. Everybody seems to do well at
Bangpakong and when you leave you are generally feeling good about your golf
game. Today was no exception with the worst score in a field of 18 players
being 29pts. Phil Battah (12) certainly had a good day taking the honours
with 40pts but only on count back from Tim Dalton (20) on the same score.
Jack McNamara (20) came in third on 39.
Thursday, 21st March, was our weekly visit to Phoenix (Ocean & Mountain).
Larry Simpson (13) showed the rest a clean set of heels by finishing first
on 39pts. Mike Rushant (11) followed in close behind on 38 with my news
correspondent mate Alan Evans (25) taking third spot on 37.
A special mention must go to Mike Rushant who not only proved his
credentials on the golf course but showed what a versatile guy he is by
managing to change the wheel on Fergus Brennan’s vehicle after he got a flat
tyre. Well done Mike!
On Friday, 22nd March, the TRGG stalwarts headed off to Khao Kheow (A and B
courses) - another stiff challenge. Dave Maw (26) showed he was up for the
test and topped the scoreboard with 37pts. The only lady in the field, Mod
Chaviraksa (12), showed the rest of the men she was not there just to make
up the numbers by taking second place on 35. John Goudge (6) finished the
week just as he started it in third place on 34.
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week!

GolfNutter: Managing Caddies

Welcome to Golfnutter’s Blog – a weekly commentary
highlighting contemporary golfing issues, in Pattaya and beyond.
To those new to golf in Thailand, and certain others, be assured much of
your enjoyment will depend upon how you get on with your caddie. Hopefully
these tips make your golfing day, and theirs, that little bit better. As is
the case with all articles posted in this blog, it is assumed golfers have a
basic understanding of scoring, club selection – knowing how far they hit
the ball through the air – and the Rules.
* On emerging from the clubhouse and meeting up with your golf bag and
caddie, greet her (or him) with, “Sawadee khrup,” or “Ka” if you’re female.
Also, inform her of your teeing order – group number. This tells her which
other caddies she will be sharing the day with, thus allowing her the chance
to organise things better – they share food etc.
* A happy caddie can have a profound influence on your day. Showing respect
is a good start. Use “khrup” often and always. It’s an easy word to say. It
means thank you, but in Thai it implies a lot more. It says you are
respectful and also gives your caddie some face amongst her peers. Attach it
on the end of a “yes” or “no” answer, or on to a request for a club, “Lek
ha, khrup,” or “five iron, khrup.” Doesn’t take much, but you will make her
day far more enjoyable than those forced to suffer from the ignorance and
disrespect shown by many Farang. She will also be better company as a
result.
* When arriving at a drink stop, you can offer them a drink, but as they
have access to liquid refreshment most would prefer the money instead.
Personally, I make a one-off offer at the first drink stop by giving 50
baht, saying, “up to you.” This is not deducted from the tip paid at the end
of the round.
* Most Thais are modest and naturally shy. Ever noticed a Thai appear to
laugh or snigger when something unfortunate befalls an individual? Maybe an
incident where someone falls over and hurts themselves? They are “laughing”
because they are embarrassed for the victim. They feel for the victim’s
situation, and are empathising. Remember this the next time something bad
befalls you or your golf, and your caddie appears to laugh.
* Distance: When asked for a distance involving a hazard, caddies will err
on the side of caution, making your succeeding shot that much harder. Beware
some will also factor in an allowance for wind when giving estimated
yardage.
* Important words caddies use: “Sai” means left. “Qua” – sounds like kwa –
means right. “Khung” means up while “lohm” – sounds like loom – is down.
“Mak mak” means a great deal. Beware when caddies say lohm or khung as they
are most likely referring to something that has a huge impact on putting,
something many Farang can’t see – grain.
* Provisional ball: Caddies do not like to be the bearer of bad news. If
there is any chance your badly-directed golf ball has not gone OB or into a
hazard, their optimism will show, or they may say, “Ha sip, ha sip” (fifty,
fifty). Add this to the language factor and you have the potential for
frustration – as you trudge back to the tee. If at all in doubt, hit a
provisional ball.
* Relief: Your caddie is keen to ensure you receive every advantage
possible, irrespective of the Rules of Golf or your Local Rules, neither of
which she/he will likely know much about. Do not rely on their
interpretation of what qualifies as relief. Especially so when they say,
“Free drop.”
* Never do or say anything that could cause your caddie to lose face in
front of her peers. Nothing you could do would leave her feeling worse about
herself, and you. Remember, she is there to carry your bag and give advice.
Whether you take that advice on-board is entirely up to you. The outcome is
also your responsibility. No caddie ever made a poor club selection or
played a bad shot, only golfers can do that.
* Sometimes you will experience a caddie whose indifference suggests she
would rather be elsewhere. We all have our bad days. Just let it be and get
on with your golf knowing next time it will be different. Know this; having
a caddie you don’t get on with is really not that important. Don’t be one of
those people who, on not getting on with their caddie, demands the caddie
master organise another. Such action could cost that caddie her job, and
with it her family’s livelihood. Is your game of golf that important? Are
you good enough to get that angry?
Happy golfing,

OK Dinghy World Championship come to Pattaya

His Majesty the King
completed a momentous crossing of the Gulf of Thailand in his OK dinghy in
1966, and later went on to win a yachting gold medal at the 1967 South East
Asian Peninsular Games.
Peter Cummins
The Royal Varuna Yacht Club, at its splendid sea-side facilities on the
Gulf of Thailand, along the Pattaya-Jomtien littoral, is about to host
its latest world championship yacht-racing extravaganza. The prestigious
Singha OK Dinghy World Championship event will be sailed next week from
the March 31 to April 5.
All are invited to the Royal Varuna foreshore, to enjoy the close-up
action of the sailing, racing and special events planned for the week’s
extravaganza. Admission is free and there will be food and beverages at
reasonable cost.
The racing will commence on Sunday, March 31, with starts,
wind-permitting, at 13.00 hrs each day (two races per day), with Tuesday
02 April scheduled as a lay-day.
Peter Cummins displays the coveted Pattaya
Mail PC Classic trophy. Made of a rare timber sourced in Tasmania and
carved by a craftsman there, it is in the shape of the small island
itself.
The Royal Varuna Yacht Club, Thailand’s biggest and most active sailing
association, was founded on 01 July, 1957 and has constantly and
consistently promoted water sports, sailing and cruising on and along
the Eastern Seaboard, as well as many venues around the Kingdom. It has
presented Pattaya-Jomtien as a family resort, to have fun and
companionship at the sea-side. Come up to Varuna during the next week
and find out.
The event will feature some 80 of this international single-handed
dinghy, designed in Denmark by Knud Olsen (KO = OK) and sailed by some
of the world’s best skippers, coming to our beckoning shores from some
nine nations world-wide. Australia (19), Denmark (6), Germany (16),
Great Britain (11), Norway (1), New Zealand (12), Poland (4), Sweden (1)
and host nation, Thailand (5).

Championship. (Photo/okdia.org)
The King: A Royal Sailor
The International OK Dinghy Association, holding the ‘Worlds’ for the
first time in Thailand, has a strong affinity to the Kingdom. This is
because our own beloved King, who has built several dinghies and has
been the world’s only reigning monarch to win a yachting gold medal,
raced his own-built OK in December 1967, at the then South East Asian
Peninsular Games, now the SEA Games.
Of course, there are other times when a father/daughter team has won a
yachting gold – that was in the Rome Olympics when Paul Elvstrom and his
daughter won the demanding Flying Dutchman Class. But, in our royal
family’s case, it was not just the winning of a sailing gold medal but
the occasion was truly a reflection of sporting history which is most
unlikely to be repeated. The King actually came equal first with his
eldest daughter, Princess Ubolratana, also sailing an OK.

Expect some spectacular sailing action as
the OK Dinghy World Championship comes to Pattaya’s Varuna Yacht Club
from March 31 - April 5. (Photo/okdia.org)
It is the only time in sporting annals, that a reigning monarch and his
daughter have shared a gold. HM the Queen presented the medals at the
SEAP Games awards ceremonies on 16 December, 1967. Thus, our King and
his daughter’s victory was – and always will remain – unique.
And, even before that, to add to the OK Dinghy legend(s) in Thailand, HM
the King sailed his OK across the Gulf of Thailand, from Hua Hin on the
west coast, to the Royal Thai Navy base in Sattahip – some 16 hours into
a head wind, in April, 1966. This was regarded, at the time, as the
longest open-dinghy transit out of sight of land, in the world! This is
the stuff of legend(s)!
As the competitors at this week’s worlds will be instantly aware, the
waters of the Gulf of Thailand, the moderate south-easterlies, the
ambient year-round warm climate and the ease of launching and beaching
on soft sand, are incomparable. They are some of the reasons that many
sailors have chosen Thailand for their world championships. The
prestigious International Fireball Association, for example, has held
three ‘Worlds’ here, with another one “in the works”.
As I scan the weather forecasts in the northern hemisphere, noting snow,
storms and minus temperatures and surmise that if I had to live in one
of these inhospitable climes, I, too , would load my dinghy into a
container, shed my “winter woolies and wellies” and fly out to the
Kingdom, basking in the sun.
Over the years, with tremendous support from the Pattaya Mail throughout
the pages of successive years of this publication, and the Bangkok Post,
as well as such in-flight magazines as Sawasdee, Sea Yachting and
numerous other media outlets, Pattaya yachting scribe and perennial
correspondent, Peter Cummins, has chronicled the incomparable
contributions His Majesty the King has made to the Thai sportsmen and
women and a huge spectrum of Thai, national and international sports –
especially our own yacht racing.
This forthcoming Pattaya event, along with many other regattas and
marine activities up and down the Kingdom amply complement the region’s
greatest sailing festival, the annual Phuket King’s Cup Regatta,
inaugurated, on 05 December, 1987, to celebrate the King’s sixtieth
birthday. Now, 27 years later, from what started as a modest tribute to
the monarch, it has now become the region’s – if not the world’s – most
sought-after yachting extravaganza.
This nautical record established by His Majesty in 1967, is matched by a
land-based one, the King being the only person to have lit the torch
opening the quadrennial Asian Games on four occasions, last time being
in Bangkok in 1998.
From another viewpoint, His Majesty’s care for the environment and the
natural state of the ecology as a life-support system for his subjects,
is also well known.
Thailand’s sportsmen and women – particularly the burgeoning army of
sailors at sites up and down the Thai coast and, now at the Royal Varuna
Yacht Club, are, indeed, fortunate to have our own King as an ardent
supporter, a leading example and, not the least, the Royal Imprimatur of
Thai sports.
All who have come to our shores for this world championship and the
legions who regularly sail at the King’s own Club, the Royal Varuna
Yacht Club in South Pattaya will, no doubt, heartily agree and salute
Varuna Yacht Club’s Royal Patron on this auspicious occasion.
The Pattaya Mail PC Classic
The Pattaya Mail, as a celebration of its 20th year of operations this
July, having recently been awarded the prestigious “Most Outstanding
Newspaper in all of East Thailand” for the 15th successive year, has
decided to re-invigorate the “Pattaya Mail PC Classic”
It all happened so long ago, that the 10th Royal Varuna Yacht Club
Commodore (1979-1980), Peter Cummins, can barely remember when he left
his native Tasmania.
First stop – and almost the last - was Pattaya, the Royal Varuna Yacht
Club and a water-borne replacement for his (t)rusty Vespa, an ancient
Enterprise dinghy, followed later by an up-market OK Dinghy, imported
from Denmark. This dinghy will be sailed during the worlds by one of the
competitors.
Little did this now, older, though not necessarily, wiser lad - and an
unsuspecting membership - know that he would become the Commodore.
It was during this tenure, simultaneously as Royal Varuna publicity
officer, reporting for the “Bangkok Post”, regional and in-flight
magazines and elsewhere, that Peter had the good fortune to be sent by
the “Post”, to Klai Kangwol Palace in Hua Hin, to sail in a regatta with
HM the King.
Several books and articles emanated from this, as well as a history of
the Royal Varuna Yacht Club.
Enter the Pattaya Mail and Peter Malhotra, who observed the other
Peter’s only surviving souvenir from his native Tasmania, a beautiful
hand-carved map of the island and, for someone who is always thinking
how to promote sailing in the Kingdom, I found the opportunity to
promote the ideas through Peter Malhotra’s Pattaya Mail for, I believe,
that he has been one of the greatest supporters of Pattaya City.
From that point on, it became the permanent PC Classic Trophy which will
be part of the ongoing worlds. The Pattaya Mail PC Classic will be held
on the penultimate race day, 04 April, 2013. Other generous sponsors of
this one-off event are BBX Thailand, Ib Ottesen’s Jomtien Boathouse, the
Bakri Cono Shipyard at the Ocean Marina, Jomtien, Norwegian Properties
Group, ASAP Marine Trading, Pattaya Self Storage, and the
newly-established Pattaya and East Thailand SKAL International.
With the approval of the World’s Organizing Committee and the
International OK Dinghy Association, the 10 first placings on that day,
will receive replicas of the trophy. In addition, all will receive
souvenir polo shirts, free happy hour drinks at Varuna’s seaside bar and
a free buffet dinner – compliments of the Pattaya Mail.
Hope to see you there!

Sea Fishing with
Pattaya Sports Club

Jeff shows off his 5kg
Pompano.
We seem to have had to work a little harder for our catches this month of
March, with average bags around 5 - 8kilos. The barracuda season is dying down,
although a few were taken on our trips out of Bang Saray on Saturday 2nd and
Tuesday 12th.
Towards the end of the month the skipper was saying that they could still be had
if we set out at 5 o’clock in the morning, an hour too early for all except the
most rabid enthusiasts. So once again, we were going after our favourite prey of
grouper, snapper and “pla daeng”, all of which make a nice plateful. Jeff
distinguished himself by reeling in a Pompano, all of 5 kilos (pictured).
On Saturday 16th, seven regulars had a very pleasant day out with plenty of fish
caught, although nothing particularly large or exotic. Everyone caught their
fair share of the regular species, and Ray landed a couple of small “Greys”.

Adrian gets a bite.
The Club also arranged a charter for Miles and his wife who went out for the
day on Sunday 17th, and came back with around 10 kilos of fish. We hope we’ll be
seeing them again on scheduled Club outings.
Tuesday 19th saw 6 of our regulars setting out on a deceptively overcast morning
which rapidly turned into bright sunshine and a steady breeze - Force 3 -4 from
the south. This produced a swell of 1–2 metres which tested some ageing backs
and limbs, as most of the day was spent bouncing up and down south of Ko Khram.
Dene caught a good number of nice Yellowtail as well as a small shark, but
Adrian had the most successful day with several greys and even a small barracuda
on top of a good haul of snapper and grouper.
Forthcoming dates for Club trips are Thursday 4th April and Tuesday 9th April.
Further dates after the Songkran holiday will be announced shortly. Bookings can
be made via www.pattayasports.org/
or phone John O’Neill on 085 391 7045

Pattaya bowlers bag medal haul in Hong Kong &China

Pinthong Pearce, Songsin Tsao,
Thong Oomen and Orawan Sodok.
Six lawn bowlers from Pattaya have returned after
successfully competing in international competitions in Hong Kong and Shenzhen,
China.
The three men, Dennis Mijnheimer, Frank de Vries and Dan Christensen, all
resident in Pattaya, together with Ralph de Rooij who flew in from Holland to
join them, won the gold medals in Hong Kong in a competition which involved 72
four-man teams.
The ladies, Thong Oomen, Orawan Sodok and Pinthong Pearce from Pattaya, and
Songsin Tsao from Bangkok, won silver medals at both the Hong Kong and Shenzhen
competitions which involved 38 ladies teams.
The achievements of both teams are remarkable bearing in mind the very limited
lawn bowling facilities that are available in Thailand.
The Pattaya bowlers regularly play at both The Retreat and Coco Club bowling
facilities.

Mijnheimer and Ralph de Rooij.
City edged out by Anatolia
Bangkok Casuals Amateur
Football League Div. 1
Paul Frain
Pattaya City entertained third placed Anatolia last weekend, with the home
team missing three of their key players.
The Turkish visitors showed they were in good form as they took the game to
City in the early stages of the match and created a number of half chances
that they were unable to convert. City, for their part, were struggling to
break down the disciplined Anatolia defence and were restricted to shooting
from long range, but without success.
It was somewhat against the run of play then that City made the
breakthrough. City’s keeper collected the ball from an Anatolia corner kick
and immediately threw it out to Vorontsov on the half way line. City’s
leading scorer left his two markers in his wake as he bore down on the
Anatolia goal and slipped the ball past the keeper to make it 1-0 to the
home team.
Anatolia were given a lifeline back into the match when they were awarded a
controversial penalty kick after one of their forwards appeared to be
tripped by one of his own teammates in the Pattaya penalty area. City’s
protests to the referee were waived away and the Turks converted the spot
kick to make the score 1-1.
City almost restored their lead when Rod Torrie’s rasping shot skimmed the
Anatolia crossbar but the visitors went straight down the other end of the
field and opened up the Pattaya defence to score and take a 2-1 advantage
into the half-time break.
Pattaya came out strongly in the second half and Vorontsov was unfortunate
to see his shot from an acute angle just shave the outside of the post with
the keeper well beaten. Soon after, a neat passing move involving
Rakotonirina, Vorontsov and Hannigan saw the latter blast the ball over the
bar from eight yards out with the goal at his mercy.
It would prove to be a key moment in the match as Anatolia held out until
the final whistle to secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory. City’s captain
Philipp Walter was disappointed with the result but said he was pleased that
the team’s performances seem to be improving week by week and expects that
to bear fruit in the upcoming matches.
