Dickie upsets the form book at Plantation
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Friday winners: Tony McDonough
(left) with David Davies.
Monday, Feb. 11, Burapha - Stableford
We had 34 Outback golfers set off to play Burapha A and B courses
from the blue markers, which at 6733yds is one of the longer courses we
play. The course was heavily booked again but the pace of play was not too
bad until we had a hold-up on the last two holes.
The day was just perfect for golf with a light breeze and a clear sunny sky.
The course was in great condition and the greens ran fast and true. The
fairways had also all been cut and the course looked great. Some of the
bunkers again were not in good condition purely because they had not been
raked properly but I think I’ve said enough on that subject.
Some of the higher handicappers like to think A and B are a little tough off
the blue markers so it was great to see that the best score of the day was
from Andy Makara with 40 points off his 31 handicap; he won Div C by six
from David Davies.
Before we go on to look at the winners in Div A and Div B, it won’t take
long for someone to spot that we have a 13 handicapper in A and another in
B. Just to explain, this is the first time we have used the new “on-line”
handicap system recently installed by the PSC, in conjunction with the
tournament software which can be added to it. So when you ask the computer
to divide the 34 players equally over three divisions, it does that quite
literally, supposedly using the exact handicap, that is why some people with
the same handicap are in different divisions. There is however a small error
in the calculation which has since been remedied but today’s results will
stand.

Treasure Hill golfers (from
left) Sonny Crawford, Sugar Ray Handford, Eddy Beilby and Stefan Hoge.
So the remaining podium finishers are Pat Regan, who took
Div B with 39 points off his 13 handicap from John Stafford (18) with 37 &
Bob Finley with 36 and Stephen Mann (Div A winner) with 38 points off his 12
handicap, from Peter Ennis (13) with 35 and his Irish compatriot, Vinny
Connellan third with 34.
There was only one ‘2’ for the day and that went to Vinny on B8, well done.
Div A (0-13)
1st Stephen Mann (12) 38pts
2nd Peter Ennis (13) 35pts
3rd Vinny Connellan (12) 34pts
Div B (14-18)
1st Patrick Regan (13) 39pts
2nd John Stafford (18) 37pts
3rd Robert Finley (15) 36pts
Div C (19+)
1st Andrew Makara (31) 40pts
2nd David Davies (25) 34pts
3rd Ken Murdock (18) 33pts
Tuesday, Feb. 12, Khao Kheow – Stableford
16 players to Khao Kheow (C & B) for our normal Tuesday outing. A sunny day
with no breeze for the first nine but thankfully we had a breeze on the
second nine to cool down everybody on the way in.
The course is improving every week and must be the best value of all the
courses in Pattaya at present; greens are as good as any locally and they
are fast and true - the fairways are improving on a weekly basis and it will
be interesting to see what renovations they do to the fairways in the off
season. Bunkers are still a worry though as the sand is very soft and the
ball tends to plug or have poached egg lies.
The pace of play was very good considering the number of groups on the
course and we all finished in just under four hours.
Welcome back to Jeff Acheson, who’s back here on a flying visit and welcome
also to Michael Omiya having his first game with the Outback.
Only one division plus the ‘2’s and great to see Peter Eriksson return the
best score of the day with 36 points off his 5 handicap from Stephen Mann
(12) with 33 points, who beat Bob Lindborg (23) on a count back. Completing
the podium in fourth place was Jeff Acheson (7) with 32 points.
There was only one ‘2’ for the day, to Jeff Acheson on C8. Well done Jeff!
1st Peter Eriksen (5) 36pts
2nd Stephen Mann (12) 33pts
3rd Bob Lindborg (23) 33pts
4th Jeffrey Acheson (7) 32pts
Wednesday, Feb. 13, Siam Plantation - Stableford
An extra tee-time enabled a full field of 20 players to enjoy the
delights of this wonderful course, which as ever was in its usual pristine
condition.
A special welcome to John Emmerson and his group of Brent, Jason & Muffy
joining us whilst the Old Course is closed for the ladies event and also to
Tim Lazecki, who hasn’t played for sometime through injury.
Ron Dickie came off the back of some recent poor form to shoot a fantastic
41pts and take the win, from the consistent Peter Eriksen with 38pts,
playing off 5. Jason Kerr (3) scored his 36pts from the blue tees (his
choice) which was another great round.
The next two weeks will be busy here again as the Old Course remains closed,
so please sign up early to avoid disappointment.
There were two ‘2’s from Peter Eriksen and Jason Kerr.
1st Ron Dickie (8) 41pts
2nd Peter Eriksen (5) 38pts
3rd Jason Kerr (3) 36pts
Wednesday, Feb. 13, Treasure Hill – Stableford
This course receives many favourable comments and represents good value for
money, which today attracted a field of 18. At one stage it seemed as though
there may have only been sixteen as the big tree, which was John White’s
marker as to where to turn off the 331, had been chopped down and he was
well on his way to Greenwood! But he made it in the end.
Off the yellow tees here today to give everybody a chance but still nobody
managed to shoot their handicap, with the best effort coming from Dave
Coller with 35pts to bag the win. Welcome to Sonny Crawford who joined us
today and took second place on 33, and Sugar, Stefan & Eddy filled the rest
of the podium finishing with 32, 31, & 30pts respectively.
Sel Wegner had the only ‘2’ on the 6th.
1st David Coller (24) 35pts
2nd Sonny Crawford (9) 33pts
3rd Sugar Ray Handford (17) 32pts
4th Stefan Hoge (16) 31pts
5th Eddy Beilby (18) 30pts
Friday, Feb. 15, Green Valley – Stableford
We had 39 players at Green Valley on Friday on an overcast and hot,
humid day. There was no breeze to start with and the smog hung around until
late in the morning when it lifted as a result of the heat and a light
breeze that came in and cooled the golfers.
The course had been heavily watered, especially the greens and the surrounds
and this made the greens very receptive, however they were still great to
putt on even if they didn’t look brilliant as a result of all the old pitch
marks.
The course was in great condition, fairways were cut and the ball sat up
well which helps good ball striking, which was reflected in the scores.
There were a number of players who shot there handicap or better and that
was in part because of the state of the course and it was just a good day
for golf.
38’s across all three divisions was the winning score; Peter LeNoury (Div
A), Tony McDonough (Div B) and David Davies in Div C. Otherwise, if you
didn’t manage to score at least 35pts you weren’t going to be in the frame,
so generally, as said earlier, some very solid all round scoring.
There was only on ‘2’ which was recorded by Sugar Ray.
Div A (0-12)
1st Peter Lenoury (11) 38pts
2nd John Cunningham (7) 37pts
3rd Stephen Mann (12) 37pts
4th Ian Heddle (2) 36pts
Div B (13-16)
1st Anthony McDonough (14) 38pts
2nd Conner Doyle (12) 38pts
3rd Robert Finley (15) 37pts
4th Kevin Hamilton (15) 36pts
Div C (17+)
1st David Davies (25) 38pts
2nd Sugar Ray Handford (17) 36pts
3rd Timothy Knight (22) 35pts
4th John Stafford (18) 35pts

Ken & Sandy sail home at Royal Lakeside
Peter Blackburn & The Drut
Monday, Feb. 11, Mt. Shadow –Stableford
Twenty four golfers gathered at the Growling Swan to take on the
short but challenging Mountain Shadow course. Hitting from the white markers
the starter sent us on our way at 0950 hours and the first group finished in
four hours and twenty minutes.

Sandy Leiper, Mike Gosden,
Peter Grey & Ken Blinco.
The course was in excellent condition and the greens as
usual tested the player’s ability to read them however they putted truly.
The weather was cloudy with a cooling breeze on the first nine but it abated
on the flipside (the breeze not the weather).
Martin Todd commented that this is his favourite course as the greens slope
towards the bar. Graham Buckingham, who always sends us to the lexicon, said
to Mike Gosden on the sixteenth tee, “Where are the onions?” Mike asked
“Why?” upon which Graham responded, “To go with the tripe you’re playing”.
Sadly Graham was correct.
The track is very testing and this was born out by the scores being lower
than the nether regions on a sausage dog.
We welcomed Tony Scambler from Pattaya and Per Aschan from Sweden.
In the A grade Scot Eaton with thirty seven points showed the way from Tony
Scambler on thirty six. Don Richardson came in third with thirty five points
whilst Per Aschan on thirty four rounded out the podium.
In the B grade Kae with thirty six points showed the way from Brad Todd with
thirty five. An interesting statistic was that Kae and Brad both had twenty
two points on the back nine. In third spot was Ed Stewart on thirty four
whilst Jayson Schembri on thirty two finished fourth.
A Flight (0–17)
1st Scot Eaton (5) 37pts
2nd Tony Scambler (8) 36pts
3rd Don Richardson (10) 35pts
4th Per Aschan (8) 34pts
B Flight (18+)
1st Kae (27) 36pts
2nd Brad Todd (18) 35pts
3rd Ed Stewart (18) 34pts
4th Jayson Schembri (18) 32pts
Near pins were won by John Harney on the fifth, Tony Scambler on the eighth,
Scot Eaton on the fifteenth and Brad Todd on the seventeenth.
Long first putts saw Ebrahim on the ninth and Per Aschan on the eighteenth,
successful.
The NAGA award was won by Frank (Paco) Waterhouse who got away to a slow
start, faded and reportedly was in more strife than Brick Bradford and
Clutch Cargo combined. Paco indicated he couldn’t pick Michael Jordan out of
a room full of pygmies let alone hand in a decent card. We agreed.
Once again the players contributed a few shaekles to Deefa the dog for the
needy children of Pattaya and they are thanked for their efforts.
Thursday, Feb. 14, Royal Lakeside - Stableford
After two weeks in Perth, Western Australia it was great to be back in
Pattaya and after the 40 degree days over there it was unusual to return to
Thailand to a cooler climate. Firstly I must say many thanks to Mike Gosden
& Martin Todd for “taking care of business” in my absence, it is much
appreciated by all. Also many thanks to The Drut for his very funny write
ups.
Everyone was looking forward to our return to Royal Lakeside after several
months and we had 29 golfers keen & ready to make the journey. Assembling at
The Growling Swan we welcomed Rohan Wright and Ken Blinco back playing with
us and a hearty welcome to first timer Steen Borregaard from Denmark. We
were sadly saying farewell to our good friend Jayson Schembri who would
shortly be returning to Australia after a long stint in Pattaya.
Departing the GS just a tad ahead of schedule at 8.28 am we headed off up
No. 7 and arrived at the golf course just 60 minutes later. The course was
not very busy so after a few practice putts and other minor acts of
preparation we were able to send our first four-ball away right on time at
10.00 am.
The weather was great with a bit of a breeze to cool things down a bit and
the golf course was in superb condition with magnificent but very slick
greens so it was almost impossible to avoid a three-putt at some stage of
your round.
With a Thai four-ball in front of us it was slow at first but they soon got
the hang of things and we completed our front nine in the very good time of
two hours. A similar pace was maintained on the back nine although we did
slow down a bit as the wind dropped and it became fairly hot. We managed to
complete our full round in the excellent time of four hours and ten minutes
after a very enjoyable round of golf on a great course with excellent
company.
It should be mentioned that we played off the white tees which were well
forward on most occasions so some very good scores were expected and
received.
We were able to have 2 grades with five podium spots in each. A Grade was
for handicaps 0 to 17 and B Grade for 18 and over. We had nearest the pins
on all the par threes and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
The winner of A Grade with a fine 41 points was Ken Blinco and the
consistent Martin Todd finished second just 2 points further back. In third
place was Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei with 38 points, 1 point ahead of
Ebrahim who finished fourth and Rohan Wright rounded off the podium on 36
points.
The biggest applause of the day went to Sandy “Leiperfrog” Leiper who won
the B Grade with a terrific 40 points and Duangjai “Kae” Tusagad finished
second just 1 point behind. Graham “Grunter” Buckingham was third with 37
points and Bjarne “Rainbow” Kjaer came fourth, with Jayson Schembri fifth on
32 points.
A Flight (0-17)
1st Ken Blinco (17) 41pts
2nd Martin Todd (8) 39pts
3rd Alain Taddei (17) 38pts
4th Ebrahim (16) 37pts
5th Rohan Wright (12) 36pts
B Flight (18+)
1st Sandy Leiper (34) 40pts
2nd Duangjai Tusagad (27) 39pts
3rd Graham Buckingham (25) 37pts
4th Bjarne Kjaer (18) 36pts
5th Jayson Schembri (18) 32pts
Near Pins: 3rd – Peter Bye, 6th – Rohan Wright, 12th – Steen
Borregaard, 15th – Ernie Picken
Long Putts: 9th – Geri Crilly, 18th – Jayson Schembri
It was also time to announce the inaugural winner of The Growling Swan
Golfer of The Month award for January, 2013. Congratulations go to Mike
“Hunter” Gosden who won prizes sponsored by The Growling Swan and Vince
Romeo. Yours truly, Peter Blackburn finished second and Roy “Plums” Dayton
was third.
The award is established by totalling the golfers’ best four stableford
rounds of the month.
1st Mike Gosden 145pts
2nd Peter Blackburn 144pts
3rd Roy Dayton 138pts
The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score
on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won by Mine
Host, Peter Grey who accepted the award in fine style and wore the NAGA cap
for a considerable time at the bar afterwards like the good sport that he
is. In the absence of big Ken Bernek it was Toddy who paraded Deefa the Dog
and many donations were collected for the needy in Pattaya from our ever
generous Growling Swan Crew.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low &
high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play
Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker Bar)
in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at 8.30 am. For
bookings or more information please contact Peter on 0806 351 386 or email

16 Pen Caruthers.
Long Drives: (0—10) Barry Power, (11-19) Steve Gibson, (20+) Mike
Craighead.
Nearest the Box: No 7 John Beshoff, No 17 Peter LeNoury.

Jimmy ‘Ak-47’ Bell.
It was Captain’s Day, a much anticipated and popular event on the society’s
calendar as the amount of players signed up to take part will testify to
that. Jez Lees (more commonly know to the regular readers as the Principal)
took over from Ireland’s retiring captain, Jimmy Day. Thanks a million for a
job well done mate. Jez will no doubt have his work cut out to keep up the
good work but if anybody can do it Jez is the man.
On with the show and the day was hot and the humidity was about as high as
it can be as the lads and lasses teed off, but this did not hinder the
scores as all the flights winners were in the 40’s.
C Flight provided the overall winner as Jimmy ‘Ak-47’ Bell lived up to his
moniker and shot a terrific 42 points. Jim’s score was three clear of the
trio of Barry ‘no nickname please’ and Jimmy ‘good’ Day or should it be good
bye? No matter, it didn’t help Jim in his cont back but it was good for the
bronze. The fourth spot went to a four-way count back that included the
Donkey, Ken ‘Sergeant’ Blinko’ Gerry Power and John Warren; the Donkey was
left holding the calculator.
Bill Peach showed he is getting the hang of this podium thing with a fine D
Flight winning 40 points but he needed all his luck in a count back to pip
Barry Elphick. Sim ‘card’ Davis, Peter Don ‘O’corleone’ Henshaw and fellow
Irishman John Hartigan went to count back all on 33 points - Sim lifted the
bronze, Peter nicked the lead as John was left satang less at sea level.

New Captain Jez Lees addresses
the faithful.
There was drama galore in B Flight as one point separated the first three
places. Vinny Connellan was the top man with a splendid 41 points that in
fact turned out to be the overall runner-up on the day, as a count back went
in Vinnie’s favour over A Flight’s Steve Mulberry. It could not have been
much closer, 20-14-7-5 to 20-14-7-6.Jeff Horsfield and Brent Philip went to
the dreaded count back which dictated that they finish in that order. Paul
Robinson tidied the flight up with a solid 38 pointsThe pied piper of
Blackpool Steve Mulberry stood atop the premier flight podium with his
flawless 41 points and as I mentioned earlier, his second overall runners-up
spot. Steve was two shots clear of Peter ‘the right honorable’ LeNoury who
in turn was one shot better than (no injuries this week) Broad more Bob
Newell. Bob was like wise one clear of Dave Shelton.
Special mention for our good pal Mike Craighead who won the long drive in
the 20+ division, but when it was mentioned that Mike had played off the
Silver tees ‘the Donkey’ had not got the heart to take his prize off him.
Back at the ranch and after the presentation and the Lewiinski’s famous
buffet, Jez was officially given the Captain’s role for 2013. Winner on the
day Jim Bell thanked everyone for a remarkable day. The good Captain closed
the event with a heart rendering speech as he faced up to the task of
carrying on where Jimmy left off.
Colin did a great job sorting out the cards and technical prizes made
difficult by some idiot who was not in the comp adding stupid names to the
markers. Next time you’re passing Lewiinski’s nip in for your prize and a
drink - the first one is on me.
George’s near pin event raised 8,400 and the entrance 8,900 to total 17,300.
A very generous anonymous donor doubled this figure to 34,600 and the PSC
put another 20,000 in the kitty. The grand total raised for the Baan Jang
Jai Children’s Orphanage was 54,600. Many thanks from a grateful bunch of
kids.
Monday, Feb. 11, Khao Kheow C&B – Stableford
A Flight
1st Paul Robinson (14) 35pts
2nd Dave Shelton (8) 34pts
3rd Pat Hanafin (13) 33pts
B Flight
1st Roland Bangerter (18) 37pts
2nd Tore Eliassen (16) 34pts
3rd Colin Davis (18) 28pts
C Flight
1st Morgens Pederson (24) 35pts
2nd Paula Pederson (20) 33pts
3rd Ayoko Pueschi (22) 33pts
Roland Bangerter, returning from whereever he goes, was the only player to
solve the Khao Kheow puzzle and in doing so he took the honours in B Flight
and was also man of the match with a solid 37 points. In the far distance
was Tore Eliassen three shots back, followed by ‘the Donkey’ as he won his
second count back of the week at the expense of Erwin Haflinger and Gerry
Roche, all three locked on 28 points.
Morgens Pederson showed his mettle as he netted 35 points in C Flight to
clear his better half Paula and Ayako Pueschi, who hails from Japan in the
Far East but which is actually south of here. Paula’s back side was adjudged
to be more evenly distributed in the following count back.
Paul Robinson is fast becoming the clean-up man as he won his second podium
place in the week. Paul was followed up the podium steps by the steady play
of Dave Shelton’s 34 points. Pat ‘the big easy’ Hanafin closed the flight a
further shot back.
Dave Shelton, Phil Page and Morgens Pedersen shared the 2’s pot.
Wednesday, Feb. 13, St. Andrews - Stableford
A Flight
1st Barry Power (0) 41pts
2nd Steve Gibson (11) 40pts
3rd Dave Shelton (8) 37pts
4th Ed Wyckoff (10) 37pts
B Flight
1st Roland Bangerter (18) 37pts
2nd Pierre Bietry (15) 37pts
3rd Kalle Jaskata (28) 34pts
4th Chris Barrett (14) 34pts
C Flight
1st Per Brandsroed (22) 39pts
2nd William Peach (23) 31pts
3rd Gerry Roche (19) 37pts
4th Brian Cooper (27) 37pts
Barry Power, teaching professional and son of long time member Gerry ‘the
Irish rover’, was a pleasant addition to the society’s roster and his fine
trade mark play was in evidence. As always, his faultless 41 points in A
Flight left Steve Gibson in second place with his own excellent 40 point
return.
Good mates Ed ‘our man in the White house’ and Dave Shelton went to a count
back to sort out the minor flight places where Dave’s treachery and guile
overcame the Senator.
In B Flight, Roland Bangerter carried on where he left off on Monday with a
count back winning 37 points over Pierre ‘the magician’ Bietry. The
calculator was out again as Kalle Jaskata and Chris Barrett both posted even
par rounds, the scales tipping in Kales’ favour.
Per Brandsroed led the C Flight into the barn with a rock solid 39 points
closely followed by William Peach a shot adrift. Gerry Roche and Brian ‘mini
Copper were tied on 37 points apiece with Gerry emerging holding the bronze
in the resulting count back.
Barry Power and Ed Wyckoff split a very healthy 2’s pot.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd Soi13/13 near
Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name
to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

The Mummy’s 6-pointer
The Backyard Golf Society

Winners pose outside The Blue
Sky Bar.
Just 7 Backyard golfers made the weekly trip to Emerald
last week with several regulars away, ill or incapacitated. The main
competition was won by Terry ‘The Mummy’ Cowell with 39 points, including a
6-pointer on the par 4, index 1 12th hole where his approach found the cup.
This is certainly the first time any of us have heard of a 6-pointer.
All 7 players today scored over 30 points with Golden Trowel’s Boyfriend
scoring 35 for second place. The big winner in the skins was Yaya’s Delight
with 7 and also the 3 rollovers from the previous week’s game. ‘The Mummy’
had 6 skins, Golden Trowel’s Boyfriend had 1 and we have 4 rollovers to next
week. The near-pin was won by Kit.
Welcome back to Linda’s better half Mickey, back in the Land of Smiles once
again.
No major talking points from the round but as the scribe was one of the
absentees we expect some juicy points from next week’s game.

PSC winner Martin Hayes,

Tuesday, Feb. 12, Wangjuntr -
Stableford
It was a busy week with a game at Wangjuntr Valley course to
kick it off. No competition here as it was decided better to play from
different tees (depending on the challenge players wanted to accept).
Some players opted for the very back Gold tees at a smidgen under 7200
yards, while the majority went from the White at a similar little over
6,000 yards. All enjoyed the day, the course & the challenge, with a
noteworthy performance from George Gamble (21) who shot a commendable
score of 36 points from the Whites.
Thursday, Feb. 14, Mt. Shadow - Stableford
Thursday was back to normal competition with Mountain Shadow
the venue from the Blue tees at a modest 6,276 yards. The comp was
contested by 2 flights today, with the split at 19+.
The lower flight was won by Jeff Wylie (7) with an outstanding 42
points, followed in by Owen Walkley (11) & Bob Edwards (8) who were
separated by count back 17/14 after both signed for 29 points.
The upper flight was a closer battle, with Clive Hoseason (23) getting
the nod on count back 18/17 over Jim Federspiel (19) after carding 34
points each. Picking up the bronze was Daniel Oshiro (21) with 30
points.
Near pin prizes were won by Bob, Graham & Jeff with 2.
Friday was the PSC tournament at Plutaluang W & N, and it was ML regular
Martin Hayes (12) showing how it should be done, winning the Low Gross
with a career best 77. Phompimon Seesa, more commonly known as Mham (28)
was happy with second spot in the Ladies after recording 34 points.
Technical awards were picked up in C & D flights by Jim Federspiel &
Willem Lasonder making it a pretty good day for the ML crew.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday,
with ML hosting prompt presentations on both days. As a PSC affiliated
venue we welcome ALL golfers, including ladies & Seniors who have opted
for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or
enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Hannan signs off with a victory
IPGC golf from The Tara Court
Sunday, Feb. 10, Mt. Shadow -
Stableford
Back at Mountain Shadow for our usual Sunday visit where again
everything went very smoothly. When we arrived half an hour before our
tee time there were no caddies available but full marks to the
caddie-master as he arranged the golf bags in order of play and as
caddies came off the course he put the first four with the first group
and so on. We teed off exactly on time and as each group was ready to
play he had caddies for them, so no delay for anyone. Very good
organisation and full credit to them
Gerry Hannan.
Play also went very well and we got round in four
hours and fifteen minutes, which for a course that was so busy was
excellent. As we had a large group we decided to give everyone a choice
of blue or white tees and have two flights. In the end everyone decided
to play off the blue tees, they all fancied themselves as golfers!
The scoring was very good for such a difficult course and Gerry Hannan,
on his last game with us for this holiday, came in with 38pts to win
from Teddy Lodge on 37. Ted was also playing his last game for this trip
and will be missed very much as he had been checking all the score cards
and doing the prize giving. Pat Culloty came third with 36pts and John
Fetherston took fourth after beating Keith Murphy and Joe Peters on a
count back.
In the ladies section Theresa Connolly was a clear winner with an
excellent 34pts and Kathleen Fetherston came second with 27.
Both Keith Murphy and Gerry Hannan had a ‘2’ each and as there was a
carryover from Thursday, both had a good pay day.
1st Gerry Hannan (11) 38pts
2nd Teddy Lodge (9) 37pts
3rd Pat Culloty (20) 36pts
4th John Fetherston (11) 34pts
5th Keith Murphy (17) 34pts
‘2’s: Keith Murphy and Gerry Hannan

Theresa Connolly.
Tuesday, Feb. 12, Pattana –
Stableford
Pattana today for another enjoyable game of golf and although
the course was busy we got off five minutes before our allotted time.
Everything was going smoothly until we caught up with a Korean ladies
five-ball and then it slowed down dramatically, however we still got
round in 4hrs 15mins, which is not bad.
We played the A and B courses and the layout was in very good condition
with the greens reasonably fast.
As was to be expected on a difficult course, the scoring was not great
with only one player playing to his handicap, that being Frank McGowan
with 36pts. Terry Kelly, after winning on Sunday, had to settle for
second today with 33pts and on his last game with us for this year,
Keith Murphy was third, also with 33, while John Fetherston took fourth
with 30. Don Byrne beat your scribe on a count back for fifth place with
29pts.
There were three birdie ‘2’s recorded today.
Back in O’Gara’s Bar we said good bye to Keith Murphy, Mark Snow and
Peter Murphy, all of whom were going home this week.
1st Frank McGowan (16) 36pts
2nd Terry Kelly (15) 33pts
3rd Keith Murphy (17) 33pts
4th John Fetherston (11) 30pts
5th Don Byrne (12) 29pts
2’s: Theresa Connolly, Peter Murphy, Frank McGowan.
Note: The Tara Court Golf Group plays every Sunday, Tuesday and
Thursday, leaving O’Gara’s Bar and Restaurant in the Tara Court on
Pratannak Rd around 10.00 a.m. Sign up either in O’Gara’s or ring George
on 087 540 0844 and he will book you in.

Scott shoots low numbers
at Eastern Star
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Derek Brook
Tuesday, Feb. 12, Eastern Star – Stableford
We had not been here for some time, but on the back of some good
reports and of course a special deal, we decided to nip down there
and give it a go. The latest news we had was that the greens had
been sanded and thus were not at their best. So with a full number
of players and of course our discount vouchers it was off to Eastern
Star.

Tuesday’s top four with one of Bert’s finest.
You are reminded when you get here of what a fine facility this is.
The clubhouse is imposing and the book-in was very easy. One of the
things I particularly like is that you can see the restaurant from
the balcony and thus see where your friends are. Many courses have
the restaurant upstairs with a fine view of the course, but I do
like this configuration.
Soon on the first tee we were reminded of how scenic the course
could be and how difficult. After deciding that most players wanted
to play off the easier yellow tees, ‘The Committee’, or ‘Organiser’
decided the day should be played off the white tees; after all it
made me feel better and ensured the scores would be low.
So off we went and it was soon apparent the greens were newly sanded
and not in top condition. It was also windy and the rough was really
difficult to get out of. You get the picture, really tough day out,
mind it is always a ‘pleasure’ to be deflated by a golf course. I
wondered how the rest were getting on.
Back at Bert’s and in the results it was noted that apart from one
‘spoilsport’ all the players were given a bit of a lesson. But you
always get one!
In the A Flight, 0 to 18, the one player who beat the course and won
was Max Scott with 39 points, and an even gross 72. Then we came to
those who put a smile of satisfaction on my face, all the rest.
Second was Mashi Kaneta with 32 points and in a count back on 30
points in third was Mike Gaussa ahead of John Binns in fourth.
So to the B Flight, and who knows I may be there shortly, and the
winner was Jack Robertson with 34 points ahead of a count back on 31
points that saw Pauline Elphick in second and Brian Gabe in third.
In fourth was Don Carmody.
Mind, does not say much for the ‘Organiser’ when his name is not
even mentioned!
This is a course that deserves respect; we even had a really low
handicapper who had 5 points on the back nine. Let the greens settle
down and it will be well worth a visit, play well here and you will
leave with a feeling of accomplishment.
Near Pins: David Nicholson, Bob Watson, Mark West, Max Scott.
Long Putts: John Harrison, Joel Flor.

Bruce Kusyk has best of the week
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, Feb. 11, Crystal Bay A & B –
Stableford
CSS 71
Division 1 (0-18)
1st Bruce Kusyk (13) 40pts
2nd Alwyne Burley (16) 39pts
3rd Phil Groves (7) 38pts
4th Kevin Townsend (12) 36pts
Division 2 (19+)
1st Don Everett (22) 39pts
2nd Konrad Klama (25) 35pts
3rd Bill Hurd (20) 35pts
4th Al Rolnik (19) 33pts
We had another large contingent of hopefuls today, but just one short of
enough for three divisions. The expected usual delay on the tee did not
materialize as, fortunately for the group but unfortunately for the course
management, a booking for six groups failed to turn up for their allotted
tee times which enabled the groups to set off almost as soon as they
arrived.

Don Everett.
It brought into focus the reason that the management of Crystal Bay and
Mountain Shadow courses had been refusing to take group bookings for longer
than a week in advance, as they maintained that many reserved groups were
failing to appear, leaving their courses sparsely populated at times.
As usual the course was found to be in excellent condition, as evidenced by
the CSS for the day reducing to 71, as players returned scores that they may
well have thought were far beyond their abilities during the last few
outings where non-counting events were in the majority.
Bruce Kusyk made a winning return to playing with the Soi 13 group with a
very good four under handicap return that was just sufficient, by the
slimmest of margins, to beat off the challenge of Alwyne Burley, for whom
the reduction in the CSS meant no reduction in handicap. Alwyne returned a
three under card for the day that would normally have been a winning score.
Phil Groves took third spot, also with a return under handicap, and Kevin
Townsend rounded out the first division podium in fourth with a level
handicap round.

Trevor
Schirmer.
The second division was a more wide open affair with Don Everett doing well
enough to attract a reduction in handicap, winning by a handsome margin
ahead of Konrad Klama who took second place after winning a count back over
Bill Hurd with a better 19 to 16 over the back nine on the card. This left
Al Rolnik in fourth a couple of shots adrift.
Alan Pilkington took the first division 2’s pot while Don Everett, Steven
Howard, Alwyne Burley and Bill Hurd shard the second division pool.
Prior to the presentations there were welcome backs for Yasuo Suzuki and
Bruce Kusyk.
Wednesday, Feb. 13, Treasure Hill (Yellow tees) -
Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Trevor Schirmer (18) 31pts
2nd Hal Hart (24) 27pts
3rd Walter O’Keefe (16) 27pts
4th Peter Skinner (9) 26pts
With Treasure Hill always in very good shape it was surprising to find that
there were not quite enough players to form two divisions, as seemingly the
big numbers part of the high season is winding down. Those that did turn out
found the course in good condition but very wet following a couple of heavy
weather days earlier in the week which made the course, even off the forward
yellow tees, quite difficult and caused the CSS for the day to go out to 75
and become non-counting. In fact, none of the contestants could return
scores within two of their handicaps.

Phil Groves.
Trevor Schirmer, who is making a determined effort to return
to his old form after undergoing surgery on his left knee, and is struggling
to get back to something like reasonable mobility, received some small
reward with a hard earned win, although the win and the margin of victory
was a little more than he was expecting as he putted in on the last green
for a fairly modest return. However, with many lower handicappers in the
field also struggling (but without similar excuses to the winner’s) it was a
very good result for Trevor.
Hal Hart slipped into second place after he had won a count back over Walter
O’Keefe, finishing with a better 17 to 15 over the inward nine which left
single figure handicapper Peter Skinner in fourth and wondering why he had
not spent the day on the driving range after travelling halfway around the
world to play a long way off of his usual standard.
Unsurprisingly there were no 2’s on the day in either of the divisions; in
fact there were only four threes in total for all the par three holes.
Back at The Haven there was a welcome back for Peter Skinner the forward
scout for the South Herts Golf Club group who are due to arrive the
following week.
Friday, Feb. 15, Khao Kheow B & C (Yellow tees) -
Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Phil Groves (7) 33pts
2nd Hal Hart (24) 33pts
3rd Bill Hurd (20) 32pts
4th Mike Hill (22) 32pts
5th Kevin Blake (5) 31pts
Once again we had not quite sufficient players to demand two divisions, with
a course that has proved to be very difficult to score on during recent
visits in prospect perhaps being the reason for the lower turnout. However
the course was in good shape although the wetness affected the run on the
fairways.
Another contributing factor may have been that many of the regular players
had competed the previous day over the same courses, although different
nines, in the Links Charity Challenge two-person scramble.
With the B and C courses in such fine shape it was somewhat surprising to
find that the CSS for the day had once again risen to 75 and became
non-counting for the second time in the week. This thwarted any hopes that
players handicaps on the cusp would attract an upward movement for the
following week.
After a couple of near misses Phil Groves returned to the top of the podium
with a solid return, after the competition had started out from the daunting
first hole on the C course, by winning the count back over the back nine on
the card, as he finished the B course with eleven points from the last four
holes.
Losing that count back by 14 to 15 Hal Hart took a good second place just
one ahead of another count back for third that was won by Bill Hurd with a
better 18 to 13 over Mike Hill. This left Kevin Blake, as the day’s low
marker, in fifth a further stroke behind.
Once again there were no 2’s in the first division but Konrad Klama drew a
big round of applause with the only one in the second division to sweep the
roll over pool.
Before the presentations were made there were welcomes for new members Mike
Remington, Bob Llaneta and Alan Flynn together with a welcome back for
Bubbles Davies who was hoping to return to skin (sic) a few off the top
during a quick raid from Shanghai.
Note. If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile
082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach
Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do
not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A schedule
of courses to be played can be found on our web site at
www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Treasure Hill wins again
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society started the new week with a
visit to Treasure Hill to play a stableford competition in one flight, many
hampered by the lack of caddies, a response to the club’s efforts to
introduce the minimum wage rule. At least some local clubs, Crystal Bay
included, are now letting golfers play without caddies, although they were
paid for at the beginning of the round.
Though the workforce were not fully up to it the course itself was and once
again it showed its teeth with a ninth consecutive competition there failing
to break par for the group.
Sharing third place were Dave Plaiter and Mike Earley with 26 points whilst
Yvonne Earley took second with 28. The winner was New Zealander Alan Flynn
and his consistency and long hitting helped him to a total of 30 points.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy went to Leigh Abbey only hours
before he was set to return to Australia after his low scoring round.
Times can be tough at Treasure Hill and this day was one of those which
golfers may wish to forget.
Riverside stroll for Flynn & Hennessy
On Wednesday, 13th February the Pattaya Golf Society forsook the bustle of
Pattaya for the tranquility of the Riverside course at Bangpakong to play a
stableford competition from the white tees, with the substantial field
divided into two flights at sixteen and under. The course was in fine order
as always and a wickedly strong breeze was in evidence all day just to add
to the golfing equation.
A very warm welcome on his return to the group was afforded to Paul McNally
and he promptly replied with the best gross of the day on his debut at the
Riverside, his 78 giving him 33 points. In the top flight he was only
outpointed by Dave Edwards on 35 and Alan Flynn, again performing well, on
38.
In the second flight Ken Grimes returned 33 points for third place with John
Chelo in second on 34. The flight winner was Martin Hennessy who used his
hurling grip to perfection in accounting 38 points at the head of the field.
There were birdie ‘2’s for Paul Edgar, Dave Edwards, Larry Slattery and Alan
Walker, who also received the Booby Bevy for his 8-19 split. Rabbi’s free
beer draw was won by a grateful Gary Bolger and the whole field was
unanimous in their appreciation of the day at Bangpakong Riverside.
Walker riding high
On Friday, 15th February the Pattaya Golf Society visited Pattaya Country
Club to play a stableford event on the course which was the subject of a
“very rudimentary back nine renovation almost a year ago. This time it was
the front nine which was in acceptable condition whilst the back nine greens
were deplorably rough, uncut, variably sanded and had holes which were
growing over, not having been relocated for at least two weeks.
The restriction of carts to the paths whilst allowing maintenance vehicles
and staff motorcycles access to the rough and fairways does not help. And
all for an increase in cost!
On what inevitably became the final visit there this year Martin Hennessy
produced another fine effort scoring 34 points for third place, one behind
Dave Moriarty’s 35 points in second place, leaving the most senior of the
players, Alan Walker riding high on 36 points.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy went to low scoring new member
Tony Browne after a tough introduction to competition golf on the Eastern
Seaboard.
The good news for PCC lovers and members is that the font nine will be
closed from 16th March for eight months and you can all enjoy messing about
on Pattaya’s newest crazy golf track, the back nine.

Collier’s do battle for domestic honours
The Billabong Golf Bar

Brian Maddox, Dave Collier and Liz Collier.
Monday, Feb. 11, Crystal Bay – Stableford
Crystal Bay was the venue today, playing A and B loop’s we got away a little
late as there was a bit of conjecture over what time we were meant to be
there, Anyway it was quite a quick round of just over four hours.
It was welcome today to Dave and Liz Collier and their friend David Parnell
from the Old Dart, great to see Kev Wild back from work also.
The course was in good condition as usual but sadly the facilities are
getting worse. The scores were really good with four players beating
handicap and most of the rest of the scores in the 30s. As there were no
‘2’s again today all the loot went in prizes.
Coming in fifth on a count back over Capt. Bob was Dick Mohns with 36
points. Fourth after losing on a count back to Brian Maddox was the old
master Bob Pearce with 37 points and it was a battle with the bride for
first and second as Dave beat Liz Collier, both scoring 38 points.
Wednesday, Feb. 13, Green Valley - Stableford
It was the usual trip down 36 to Green Valley today. The weather was a bit
overcast but no rain and the course looked a bit wet and we were told no
carts on the fairways, so winter rules were to apply it was too late to
change it after the first two groups had gone out, but it wasn’t really
needed.
There were some great scores today with almost every player in the 30 plus
bracket and there were seven ‘2’s, obviously the par three’s are easy here!
Lloyd Shuttleworth had a day to remember as every bad shot he hit bounced
off something and finished up in the middle of the fairway, although he
still managed to lose his bet with Capt. Bob and Noodle Russell.
The course was in great condition and we were away early as there were a few
no shows. Firstly the ‘2’s pot and Richard Holmes, Kev Wild (his first ever
birdie), Larry Woodley, JJ Harney, Stan Stoker, Jim O’Neill and Arch
Armstrong split the pot.
In the comp proper, coming in first with 39 points was Dick Mohns ahead of
Capt. Bob in second with 38 (24 of them on the back nine) while in third was
Jim Bell with 37. Before he left the bar Jim said, “If I’m in the frame give
the prize to Father Ray’s box,” thanks Jim. Fourth sport went to Paul
Montgomery with 36 points and coming in fifth on a count back over Ives
Phillibert was Noodle Russell with 35.

John Locke and Bob Philp.
Friday, Feb. 15, Eastern Star - Stablerford
Eastern Star, what can I say! We were greeted with “You book for Saturday?”
- “no sweetheart today”, so after some shuffling around we got off at about
10 minutes later than our booked time. No problems but some of the greens
were in were in terrible condition, all sand and patches everywhere that the
staff had tried to fix-up as best they could. Anyway the rest of the course
was in grand shape.
With 5 groups everything went well and we got around in four hours. There
were no ‘2’s once again and Kev Wild was heard to remark, “I get a two at
Green Valley Wednesday and so did 6 other players and today none at all. I
should have saved it for today.”
After celebrating Fiona’s Greig Ritchie’s daughter’s birthday the previous
night at the Hard Rock Hotel it was tough work out there for a few players.
Greig Ritchie’s playing partner had to get a taxi back to his hotel after 6
holes, hope you feel better soon Frank.
The scores were not too bad, but John Locke took the honours on a count back
over Capt. Bob, both on 38 points, but John’s 24 on the back nine was too
good to be beaten. Coming in third place was Dave Payne with 34 points and
his mate Davo a.k.a. Michael Davidson was fourth with 33. It was the old
master again coming in fifth with 32 points. All in all it was a good day
out.
Note: If you would like a game at the Billabong Golf Club turn left just
before the arch heading to Siam Country Club Old Course and look for the bar
200 yards on your left, or call Bob on 082 204 3411.

Norman doubles up at Bangpakong
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch

40-point man Keith Norman (right) with friend.
Monday, Feb. 11, Greenwood A & B –
Stableford
A slightly later tee time than normal, so our group of 26 golfers enjoyed a
leisurely breakfast at The Ranch, before heading up the 331 on an overcast
but pleasant day. We’d been warned the previous day that there might be a
problem with caddies, but when we arrived there was no problem checking in,
and we headed off on schedule.
The course was fairly quiet and in good condition with plenty of grass on
the fairways and the greens running fast and true, so everything was set for
some good scores. In the event 8 golfers played to their handicap or better,
but no one could catch Gerry Cooney who romped home with 41 points to win
the A Flight in some style. Gez Williams continued his recent good form to
win the B flight on a count back ahead of Mike Corner.
A Flight
1st Gerry Cooney (14) 41pts
2nd Tony Berry (10) 39pts
3rd Tony Robbins (12) 38pts
4th Cyril Wallwork (hcp. 14) 38pts
B Flight
1st Gez Williams (17) 36pts
2nd Mike Corner (20) 36pts
3rd Jack Robertson (25) 35pts
4th PJ Redmond (25) 33pts
Near Pins: Cyril Wallwork, Lee Butler, Thomas Nyborg and Tony
Robbins.
Wednesday, Feb. 13, Bangpakong – Stableford
An easy run down the 7 motorway today, with the first car arriving 50
minutes after departing from The Ranch, (no prizes for guessing who!) and
the others a few minutes later. Once again the course was in excellent
condition with near perfect fairways and greens so we elected to play off
the white tees, which at almost 6,700 yards is a longer track than we
normally play.
The weather was also almost ideal with a cooling breeze so it was a safe bet
that someone would shoot an excellent score. It was no surprise then that
almost half the field of 21 golfers played to their handicap or better, and
even less of a surprise that Keith Norman shot 40 points for his second
successive game here. Jack Robertson continued his good run of form to win
the B Flight on a count back ahead of Mark West.
Tony Berry and Cyril Wallwork were both playing their last game before
departing to the U.K., and couldn’t have had a better day to take back
memories of golf in Pattaya before donning the waterproofs and thermals to
carry on playing at home.
A Flight
1st Keith Norman (12) 40pts
2nd Tony Robbins (hcp. 12) 36pts
3rd Cyril Wallwork (14) 35pts
B Flight
1st Jack Robertson (25) 39pts
2nd Mark West (18) 39pts
3rd John Hughes (18) 38pts
Near Pins: Bernie Stevens, John Hughes, and Keith Norman (2).
Friday, Feb. 15, Eastern Star – Stableford
A smaller group of golfers today, with a large contingent of regulars
playing at the nearby Navy course in the monthly PSC competition. We teed
off on schedule and the course was generally in good condition apart from
the greens which appeared to have deteriorated even more since our last
visit a few weeks ago. The green on the par 3 fourteenth hole now resembles
a lunar landscape, and is virtually unplayable.
The poor greens may be one reason for the low scores on the day, but this is
always a tricky course, and anyone playing to their handicap here has had a
good day. The best performer today was Peter Platt who recovered from an
indifferent outward nine to score well on the inward half, and narrowly beat
the always steady Gerry Cooney.
Our caddies today left a lot to be desired, and your scribe was one of those
to suffer as he played his second shot on the par 5 fourth hole,
unfortunately playing the wrong ball, and necessitating the caddy to waddle
back 300 yards from her resting place beside the green!
1st Peter Platt (13) 32pts
2nd Gerry Cooney (12) 31pts
3rd Mike Corner (19) 29pts
Near Pins: Peter Habgood and Gerry Cooney (2).
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play
out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and
almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out and a friendly but
competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new
players are always welcome. Contact Buff on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663 for
all enquiries. You can find all the news, schedules and results on our
website at www.bunkersociety.com.

Wednesday, Feb. 13, Phoenix – Stableford
We started off on the Ocean course and the Mountain nine was to follow. We
had a good turnout today with 46 players and the cut was made at 5-14, 15-19

second on 37 and Matti Pihlajisto took third with 35.

scoring a ‘2’ on the 8th.
Friday, Feb. 15, Eastern Star – Stableford
Our normal regular turnout on a very warm day yet again. There were three
people in division 2 with 35 points and a 18/16/15 back nine count back put
Joe Kubon in first place, Willy Van Heetvelde second and Darryl Blair third.
Wichai Tanunsorn won division 1 with 33 points, Pete Sumner was second two
points behind and Chris Voller beat Wilf Latham on count back for third
after they both scored 30.

Webber.
Pete Sumner and Matti Pihlajisto birdied the 6th in division 1 and there was
a rollover in division 2 to the following week Friday.

Bob’s best & not bad for a (T)hakker
Phoenix Members Golf Society

Mukesh Thakker and Bob Neylon
pose with the staff at The Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
Two flights today, Tuesday 12th Feb., to tackle the Lake/Ocean course. Most
players prefer this combination simply because we finish adjacent to the car
park and the walkers don’t have far to go to get their clubs to their car. I
am sure the caddies prefer this as well. It is some walk from the other 18th
holes to the car park. Don’t really matter much for us old codgers who rent
a cart for the day.
In ‘A’ flight today Mukesh Thakker (get it, Thakker, hacker. Oh please
yourselves missus), scored a superb 40 points (gross 79) to claim first
place. In second place was Richard Baldwin, miles away with 34 points with
myself claiming third place with a lowly 33 points. Don’t say much for the
other (proper golfers).
In ‘B’ Flight Bob Neylon wiped out everybody with a massive 42 points (Gross
86). In his own words, “My best score ever!” In second place with a score of
37 points (sometimes good enough to win) was Joris Goetschalckx, and
claiming third place with 35 points was Gerry Hughes.
Near pins went to John Bartley, Joe Miller, Eamon Murtagh & Peter Wathall.
With both Joris and John Bartley in the prizes everyone else was delighted
because that meant they could not be in the lucky draw. They always win!
So the lucky draw prizes donated by our hosts The Relax Bar were awarded to
Adriano Reale, Sergio Poggi, Sergio Volpi and to spoil the Italian white
wash, Jim Neilson.
We brought in the animal conservation group this week which meant that
Richard Baldwin (who managed to slay a bird and a fish last week) could not
go around destroying the wildlife!
Onto Friday, Feb. 15, and being one of my opponents in our match play group
today Ulf Berggren not only pillaged the whole field, he took money from me
as well. However, I have to
say he played very well to score 39 points and claim the winner’s prize.
In second place was the yoyo man Patrick Browne with 38 points. One week
Patrick will score 20 points and the next he will shoot the lights out.
Third place was claimed by Ggggranville (The banana man) Swanton with 34
points.
Near pins went to Keith Etherington (2) Granville Swanton & Patrick Browne.
The supposed high season seems to be coming to an early end this year with
the course not so busy as years gone by. We are predominantly a Phoenix
Members group but we welcome non Phoenix members as our guests and they can
enjoy a reduced green fee as our guests. Our main rules are men only and no
more than 28 official handicap.
We also run fortnightly scheduled sea fishing trips. So anyone interested,
please call me on 087 091 7565.

on count back
PSC golf from Café Kronborg

Svend Gaarde, Dave Richardson
and Kjeld Ravn.
Monday. Feb. 11, Bangpakong –
stableford
Today it was our favorite - the Bangpakong Riverside course, up the route 7

Thursday, Feb. 14, Pleasant Valley – Stableford
It was off for a very pleasant day at Pleasant Valley, just 42 minutes en
route, an easy check-in and off the first tee on time under sunny and hot
conditions. The course was in very good condition with the exception of the
bunkers, which looked like all of Thailand had traipsed through them in the
last 2 days.
Back in the clubhouse after a steady 4 hours and 15 minutes round welcomes
went out to Lotte Boskov and Arne Max Pederson, back from Denmark.
Two flights today with the cut at handicap 19 and a full set of near pins.

Barry hits form at Green Valley
PSC golf from The Golf Club
Cheers Boys! Emmerson, Wagner, Le
Noury and Hastie celebrate.
Steve Ellison
Monday, Feb. 11, Green Valley (White tees) –
Stableford
A Flight
1st Jason Kerr (3) 39pts
2nd Dave Mather (8) 37pts
3rd Peter Le Noury (11) 37pts
4th Grant Montgomery (12) 36pts
B Flight
1st Barry Tregurtha (18) 41pts
2nd Terry Wagner (20) 38pts
3rd Michael Hastie (20) 38pts
4th John Emmerson (15) 36pts
First off, we have a road trip on the 12th & 13th of March to Kabinburi,
so drop by and sign up soon as we only have 24 places reserved.
He’s a rambler and a gambler and today we saw B Flight fighter Barry
Tregurtha shoot one of his best rounds this year to beat even the low
handicappers with his 41 Stableford points. Nice to see him finally
coming into form, even though he heads back to Blighty at his peak. Oh
well Bazza, ya went out on a high at least.
At the other end of the age spectrum (I couldn’t resist), young Jason
Kerr took the first for the A Flight with 39 points off a 3 handicap.
Great round Jason, you certainly earned it mate. Let’s not forget the
crowd of usual suspects on the podium; Dave Mather, Peter Le Noury,
Michael Hastie, Terry, Grant and Emmerson all played well and all earned
Handsome Man Vouchers for their efforts.

Glen Henriksen with Phil Smedley.
The consensus was that for the amount of play this course sees at this
time of the year, the greens were fantastic. You must sign up about a
week ahead of time this time of year, so call or come in to put your
name down and join us for a great day of golf. Today there were 36
golfers joining us and thanks to Captain Phil Smedley for keeping the
cats rounded up.
Wednesday, Feb. 13, Pleasant Valley (White tees) – Stableford
1st Glen Henriksen (10) 40pts
2nd Mike Omiya (7) 37pts
3rd Phil Smedley (13) 36pts
Another Pleasant Valley Wednesday, here in status symbol land ... as the
song goes. No rain came our way, but the skies were a bit foreboding. We
enjoyed a nice cool day today, and the verdict was positive for the
course. The greens were grainy and took the ball further than expected,
adding to the consternation of many.
Glen Henriksen had a really nice time out there today and beat the field
by 3 shots over his nearest rival, Mike Omiya on 37. Fearless Captain
Phil is playing good, consistent golf these days and shot his handicap.
Not easy to do when you are herding cats, as Brad would say.
Stuart McKenzie, Jay Burns, Bill
Yerdon, George LaPorte & David Baird.
Friday, Feb. 15, Khao Kheow (White tees) – Stableford
1st Bill Yerdon (10) 38pts
2nd Dave Mather (7) 37pts
3rd Jay Burns (3) 36pts
This was a “surprise” comp as it was a last minute booking for the lads
who did not get to play with the PSC Monthly. Khao Kheow was the punters
choice for the day as it has been in great shape lately and is always a
popular golf course.
To pay 30 USD for a Pete Dye course in high season is great value and we
will continue to support Khao Kheow as they work hard to keep the locals
happy. Don’t worry, when the season is winding down and all the tourists
are gone, we will still keep coming back to play!
We are lucky enough to have made some great new friends this last
fortnight with a gang of great golfers from Atlanta, Georgia and
Sterling, Scotland who have teamed up to head out Pattaya way. Our pal
Jay Burns was the leader of the pack and the International Scoundrels
were determined to drink us dry, and they nearly accomplished that goal!
Bill Yerdon is one of the lads from Atlanta, and his 38 was a great
round on this tricky course. Billy won the day with Dave Mather in
second and the legendary Jay Burns just a bit back for third place. This
looks like it will turn out to be an annual event, so watch this space
in 12 months time for the return of the Magnificent Seven. Thanks for
joining us for another great week of golf in Pattaya, a golfers
paradise!
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We usually play on
Monday, Wednesday and Friday so come join us for a seriously fun day
out. Just call 085 434 3377 or see our website

High scores abound
at PSC 122nd Monthly Golf Tournament

Happy 50/50 winners, the two
Barry’s with William Macey.
Words by Nigel Cannon/ Pictures by
William Macey
Friday, Feb. 15, Plutaluang Navy Course
With Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham away in America it was
Charity Chairman William Macey and Social Chairman Nigel Cannon who took
care of this month’s tournament with help from Vice President Dennis
Willett. Preparation work in the office was in the ever capable hands of
Khun Mai.

‘A’ Flight winner - Francis Goyons.
It was Dennis and Nigel on the registration desk with
William as the starter. There was a full complement of 128 playing today
with just a couple of last minute adjustments. The weather was fine and hot
and the course in good condition with greens a little slow but most rounds
were completed in 4½ hours. As with a number of courses this year, caddies
were in short supply and were supplemented by others whose navigational
skills and golf knowledge were doubtful!
The low gross winner with a fine 77 gross and winning on count back from Bob
Watson was Martin Hayes (12) who said afterwards, “I had the round of my
life.”
In ‘A’ Flight, playing medal from the white tees, it was Francis Goyons (9)
with a net 71 in top spot.

Martin Hayes shot a Low Gross 77.
It was 40+ in the men’s Stableford flights (yellow tees)
with Gary Saunders (16) taking ‘B’ Flight with 44 points, Jens Jensson (18)
‘C’ Flight with the best of the day 46 points, and Jiri Skaba (34) ‘D’
Flight with 42 points.
Just 10 ladies today with Hana Skabova (30) leading with 37 points and Seesa
Phonpinmon (28) runner-up with 34 points.
After the golf it was off to Dicey Riley’s for the presentation where a
superb buffet was ready and excellent drink service. After all were
satisfied it was time to hear who were the winners today.
Nigel called order and welcomed players and guests and introduced William
Macey. He reminded all that the next tournament was the annual PSC major
fundraising event, the Charity Classic at Burapha on Friday 22nd March. The
format is a 2-person scramble and will be a shotgun start at Noon with many
prizes and the presentation in the clubhouse.
Following the lucky draw it was time for the 50/50 draw and tickets were
sold by the lovely Wendy Chetland, to whom we express our appreciation. The
50/50 draw was shared by Barry Elphick and Barry Oats who were seen with big
smiles. It was then goodnight after another successful PSC tournament.

‘B’ Flight winner - Garry
Saunders.

Ladies winner Han Skabova with
the Charity Chairman.

500 bid farewell to Muay Thai legend Yodthong Senanan
Teerarak Suthathiwong
More than 500 friends, family members, students and civic leaders paid final
respects to Thailand’s pre-eminent Muay Thai boxing trainer Yodthong
Senanan, who died Feb. 8.

The late Yodthong Senanan.
Born Aug. 28, 1937 in Ratchaburi as Erawan Siriwalak, Yodthong was
grandmaster of the Sityodtong Muay Thai Camp in Pattaya and produced 57 Muay
Thai champions, the most in the history the sport. Included among those were
world champions Samart Payakaroon, Kongtoranee Payakaroon, Nuengpichit
Sityodtong, Detpitak Sityodtong, Chartchai Sityodtong, Yoddecha Sityodtong,
and Daotong Sityodtong.
MP Poramet Ngampichet, representing Culture Minister Sonthaya Kunplome,
presided over the Feb. 11 funeral rites at the boxing camp with top city and
boxing industry officials attending. A procession of mourners took turns
pouring holy water for “Kru Tui” before his royal cremation Feb. 17 at
Nongprue Temple.
Samat Phayakarun of the Yodsanan K-3 Battery, said that while he knew
Yodthong had been ill, his death caught him by surprise, as he’d just
visited his friend and menotor the previous week.
Yodthong was the only Muay Thai instructor to ever be awarded a lifetime
achievement award from the royal family and was the first to receive an
honorary doctorate in Muay Thai from Chom Bung Rajabhat University.
Outside of boxing, Yodthong became well known for his generosity and
philanthropy. Although he won 56 million baht in the Thai lottery in 2005,
he died in near poverty after giving away nearly all of it.

Dolphins link up with
South Korean football club

Thanachot Anuwan
Pattaya United will exchange professional and youth players with South
Korea’s Busan I’Park as part of a cultural exchange between the two
football clubs.
At a ceremony before the Pattaya-Busan friendly match at Nongprue
Municipal Stadium Feb. 2, Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome and former I’Park
Chairman Ahn Byeong-Mo signed an agreement for the four-time Korean
League champs to help the Pattaya club with training up-and-coming
players. The pact also allows each club to share training facilities.
In the match, I’Park drew with Pattaya United 2-2 in an entertaining
contest. The visitors were coming off the back of a successful outing in
the recent Chang Chonburi Invitation tournament and they took the lead
midway through the first half when midfielder Lee Jong-Won capitalized
on a mistake in the United defence to fire the ball into the back of the
Dolphins’ net.
United are still in the midst of pre-season training and it took them a
while to shake off the ring rust, but they started to come alive as the
game wore on and they carved out several scoring opportunities in the
lead up to half time.
After the break, United wasted no time in drawing level as Russian
forward Rod Dyachenko prodded the ball home from the edge of the Busan
penalty area. The Dolphins continued to press and were rewarded with a
second goal as Wasan Thanapat scored with a spectacular effort from 20
meters that left the Korean goalkeeper helpless.
United visibly tired towards the end and I’Park scrambled an equalizer
when the home team were unable to clear their lines following a hopeful
ball into the penalty area and Kim Ik-Hyun bundled the ball into the
net.
Pattaya United President Ittipol Kunplome said that the proceeds from
this match would be distributed to local charity foundations. Ittipol
also commented on the link up with I’Park, saying the agreement would
prove invaluable for the Dolphins as I’Park, owned by giant conglomerate
Hyundai, has deep resources and experience in training football players.
The new Thai Premier League season gets underway on Saturday, March 2
and United face a difficult opening fixture with an away trip to Samut
Songkhram FC.

Fishing Report
As we had only one Saturday trip booked with Khram Marine this month, we
took the opportunity to investigate other boats and locations, and found
a boat at Laem Samae San, where 5 of us went on Saturday 2nd Feb. with
high hopes. Sadly, we were severely disappointed, because in spite of
paying a deposit and agreeing our normal 7 a.m. departure, the boat was
not ready and the skipper had gone to “get bait”. Thus it was nearly 8
a.m. before we set out.

Jeff with his stingray.
After motoring for some time past the islands off Sattahip, Dene
discovered that the bait was a smallish bag of shrimps and made it clear
this was not acceptable. The trip then descended into farce as the
skipper motored round other boats in the area begging or borrowing some
squid. He then sulked for the rest of the day, was persuaded only with
reluctance to cut up the bait for us and declined to clean some of the
catch at the end of the trip.
The squid he did get was pretty ropy, and we all had small catches, Dene
doing about the best with around 4 kilos. Jeff caught some interesting
variations from the normal pla daeng, snapper and grouper with a
Leatherjacket, a Lizard fish and a Stingray (see picture). Needless to
say, the tribulations already described plus a highly dangerous scramble
to get on and off the boat have dissuaded us from considering this
provider for future trips for the Club.
The six members who set out on Tuesday 12th Feb had a much happier day.
The barracuda were still running off Koh Khram, and between them the
guys hauled in nearly 40. This provided plenty of excitement, and Bill
and Jason posed for the camera with some of their catch. For aficionados
of the Ban Chang scene, Bill has recently taken over the Kiwi Bar, now
renamed B & K.
Bill and Jason pose with their catch.
Later on, fishing for our normal species was a little slow.
Nevertheless, most went home with a decent icebox-full, with Dene, as so
often, coming out on top with around 20 kilos.
The two remaining trips in February are fully booked. Trips in March are
on Saturday 2nd, Tuesday 12th, Saturday 16th and Tuesday 19th. Contact
Pattaya Sports Club or call John O’Neill on 085 391 7045.
