Pattaya Sports Club Fishing Report

Robert Waller shows off his
catch.
Dene Mundy
After several months of inclement weather, our November and December
trips have enjoyed good fishing conditions. The trip on Dec. 15 continued
the trend as we set out in blue skies and mirror like waters with a cooling
gentle breeze.
The fishing was somewhat slow, which required frequent shifts to alternate
locations. Fortunately, drift fishing has the boat moving over areas where
schools of fish provide us with plenty of action. This was the case today
and all of us had satisfactory catches of the usual snapper, yellow tail and
grouper. The grouper in particular were of good size as shown in the picture
held by Robert Waller, a visitor on holidays from the UK.
Take home catches ranged from 6 to 12 kilos with Jeff landing the only sweet
lip cod for the day, a little over 2 kilos.
2013 trips have been scheduled with Khram Marine covering the period January
to June. Two weekday trips each month have been changed from Thursdays to
Tuesdays and two Saturday trips will be held each month.
Scheduled trips for January 2013 are as follows:-Tuesday 8, Saturday 12,
Tuesday 22 and Saturday 26. Fees are baht 1,500 for members and 1,750 for
non-members. There is an additional charge of baht 400 for rod & reel hire
and tackle if required.
Please contact the PSC office for bookings – tel. 038 361 167.

Bob and George top dogs
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society

Bob Watson (left) and George Jackson.
Sunday, Dec. 16, Green Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Pierre Bietry (13) 41pts
2nd Dave Shelton (8) 41pts
3rd J-P Gasser (11) 40pts
B Flight
1st Jerry McCarthy (15) 41pts
2nd Jim Bell (15) 37pts
3rd Claude Harder (16) 37pts
Near Pins: No 4 Eddy Beilby, No 9 Thomas Haering, No 12 Bob Watson,
No 16 Bob Newell
Hey where’s the old title boy today? Well before the field could get to smug
about keeping Mr. Kevin ‘you know who’ off the podium, it was pointed out
that he was last seen leaving Pattaya for the airport in a Securicor van
soon after he shot the best gross in the PSC Friday comp. Apparently he had
hell of a time explaining to immigration how it was that he was tacking more
loot out of the country that he brought in.
This left Pierre’ the magician’ Bietry and Dave Shelton (A Flight) plus Co.
Kilkeny man Jerry McCarthy (B Flight) as co-men of the match with 41 points.
The laurels in the premier flight went to Pierre as he edged Dave Shelton;
J-P Gasser also needed a 40 point return to take the flight bronze.
Bob Watson and ‘broad more’ Bob both returned solid 39 points (but more on
that later).
Jerry ‘the Irish rover’ showed he was riding a purple patch as had his own B
Flight winning 41 points. Jerry was four clear of a triumvirate of Jim
‘AK47’ Bell, Claude ‘try a bit’ Harder and William Peach all log aimed on 37
points and in that order.
‘Broad more’ and ‘the Principal’ challenged playing partners Bob Watson and
this scribe as to who picked up the bar tab. ‘Broad more’ was full of
himself after his team won the front nine by one hole. That changed to
silence as Aussi Bob Watson fired five birdies on the trot, but to be fair
it was only count back that separated us at the end. That left the scribe to
better ‘the Principal’s’ nine no scoring holes to his five. One could say
that George and Jez certainly got their two Bob’s worth. Rather like old
times, especially the scoring. Thanks Jez!
Bob Watson picked up a 2 along with Pierre Bietry, William Peach and Alan
Thomas.
Monday, Dec. 17, Crystal Bay C&B - Stableford
A Flight
1st Francis Goyons (9) 41pts
2nd Pat Hanafin (13) 39pts
B Flight
1st Keith McLachan (22) 41pts
2nd Odd-Holm Hansen (22) 35pts
Francis Goyons and Aussie ace Keith McLachlan were the top performers in A&B
Flights respectively, both with 41 points apiece. Francis was followed
closely by the duo of Irishmen Pat Hanafin and J-P Maffray, both on solid 39
points. Pat had the best of the maths to fill the senior flight leaving J-P
to sit and watch the presentation from his favourite bar stool.
In B Flight Keith put a six shot gap on Odd-Holm Hansen as he took the
silver.
Both flight winners carded 2’s along with Peter Kelly.
Wednesday, Dec. 19, Khao Kheow - Stableford
A Flight
1st Dave Shelton (8) 41pts
2nd Patrick Kelly (+3) 39pts
3rd Pat Reagan (12) 36pts
B Flight
1st Eddy Beilby (18) 40pts
2nd Reg McKay (15) 37pts
3rd Norman Cheetham (15) 34pts
C Flight
1st Marlene Prudden (23) 42pts
2nd Keith McLachlan (22) 34pts
3rd Geoff Kubas (23) 33pts
No one questions that Khao Kheow plays tough from the white or the blue tees
so it was a surprise to see that A-B- and C Flights needed 40 or more points
to win. Dave Shelton led the testosterone A Flight to better Sunday’s second
place finish with a very creditable 41 points; just edging Irishman Patrick
Kelly’s faultless 39 points (off the blue tees). Fellow Irishman young Pat
Regan rounded out the flight with a solid even par round.
Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby was perched on the top of B Flight as he posted a
rock solid 40 points. Eddy’s fine effort was three strokes clear of
Scotland’s Buckie boy Reg McKay. Norman ‘I never’ Cheetham continued his
fine play and won a count back over the inform Jerry ‘the Irish rover’
McCarthy.
Now to C Flight, Marlene the better half of the Prudden family, was the
toast of the bar with her flight winning score and the day’s lady of the
match as she danced into the forties with a blistering 42 points and in so
doing waltzed away with the top allowance in her flight. Aussie ace Keith
McLachlan, no stranger to the pay window, took the silver a distant 8 shots
back, as Geoff ‘Elvis’ Kubas hit the right notes to fill the flight.
Dave Shelton (a brace) plus five others shared the 2’s pot.
Friday, Dec. 21, Treasure Hills - Stableford
A Flight
1st Nick Odnoral (16) 34pts
2nd Colin Davis (16) 33pts
3rd Lindsay Semple (15) 33pts
B Flight
1st Jorn Finnerup (28) 33pts
22d Peter Henshaw (19) 33pts
3rd Jan-Roger Ulricksen (18) 32pts
What a difference a course makes! And some distance (6,726 yards) and some
dryness. The same guys and gals and their same sacks of clubs, who have all
week shot 40 or more points to win a flight took on the sometime diabolical
design of Yoshikazu Kato. I should stop the article right here and now but
we never do that. Actually the man of the match and A Flight, Nick Odnoral,
came within a couple of his handicap 34 points. Colin ‘the Donkey’, who met
his wife Sim in her caddying days there as most of her family are caddies
there, enjoyed the family reunion as he gained a count back verdict over
Aussie Lindsay Semple.
The action in B Flight was just as dramatic as Jorn Finnerup did the
unthinkable as he relegated Peter ‘Don O’corleone’ Henshaw to the silver by
virtue of another count back decision as both were knotted on 33 points.
Jan-Roger Ulricksen closed the flight one stroke back.
Jan ‘the quite one’ Erikssen made a lot of noise as he rattled the 2’s pot
alone.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi 1, Beach Rd Soi13/13 near
Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name
to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Return of the ‘Welsh Wizard’
Travellers Rest Golf Group

Welsh Wizard’ Alun Webber - winner at Phoenix.
Andy Rich
When I informed you last week that the ‘Welsh Wizard’ Alun
Webber was back in town and it was only a matter of time before he
finished back at the top of the leader board, I didn’t really expect
that at the first outing this week he would start working his magic and
finish in the prize money, taking fourth place with a measly 27pts in
Division 2. I think it was during the last blue moon that 27pts was
enough to win some prize money and he followed that by walking off with
first place in the competition at Phoenix on Thursday by conjuring up
41pts. Magic indeed!
So on Monday 17th December the TRGG attracted another large turnout and
headed off to play Pattana (B and C courses), a tricky course with not a
flat green to be seen anywhere. Such was the size of the turnout it
required two divisions (Div 1 was up to 11 handicap and Div 2 was 12
handicap and above). You will probably already have gathered that
scoring well on this course is a stern test if the aforementioned 27pts
was good enough to take fourth place. However the Division 1 golfers
passed the exam with honours. Tristan Gilbert (11) took first place with
37pts; this was despite putting his opening tee shot in the water. Alan
Thomas (5) came second with 36pts and Ian Bell (6) strode into third
place with 34.

Neil Bramley - winner at
Pattana and Mountain Shadow.
Division 2 was headed by Norman Cheetham (15) who shot 32pts followed by
Barry Oats (25) and Robert Cannon (20) who both returned with 30pts,
with Barry winning on count back.
However there was a top prize for the overall winner of the day and that
went to Neil Bramley (9) who left everybody else in his wake shooting
39pts. Neil has been suffering from a shoulder injury for some time and
it is good to see he has now shaken it off, the injury that is, not his
shoulder.
Tuesday 18th December was the turn of Khao Kheow (C and B courses) for
the TRGG stalwarts. It was a smaller turnout and back to one division on
the day.
Roger Verivillel (12) took advantage of having fewer opponents to beat
by taking first place on 37pts. Norman Cheetham (15) made the winners’
podium two days in a row, this time finishing second but shooting the
same score of 32pts and Noel Pittard (7) dropped into third place also
with 32pts, losing out on count back to Norman.
As previously mentioned, Thursday 20th December at Phoenix (Lake and
Ocean courses) Alun Webber worked his magic but only as winner of
Division 2. Because of another mega turnout there were two divisions
(Div. 1 up to 14 handicap and Div. 2 for 15 handicap and up).
Alan Thomas (5) took his second prize of the week, finishing on top of
the pile with 36pts. Paul Sharples (10) was second on 35, this time
beating Norman Cheetham into third also on 35pts but losing out on count
back.
Division 2 was the Alun Webber (21) show, winner by a country mile on
41pts. Lars Strom (23) finished as the sideshow in second on 36 and Alan
Evans (24) finished as the last show in third on 32. Mr Webber must now
get used to playing off a handicap of nineteen as he has magically been
cut.
On Friday 21st December, the day the world was due to end according to
the Mayan calendar, the TRGG called their bluff and headed off to
Mountain Shadow to play golf. Neil Bramley (9) for the second time this
week played out of this world, so he didn’t care if the world ended or
not, and returned with 39pts which was much too good for Ian Bell (6) in
second on 35 and Barry Wood (10) in third on 33.
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and a very Happy
Christmas to one and all and may your handicaps grow ever smaller for
the New Year.

Smith sets the standard to take annual Bunker title
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch

New champion Paul Smith (with trophies)
celebrates with the runners up and “The Boss”.
Monday, Dec. 17, Plutuluang W&N -
Stableford
Our first visit for quite some time to the Navy course and we
elected to play the West and North nines, which most players regard as the
more difficult pair. It has to be said that this is not everyone’s favourite
course and consequently there was a smaller field than expected, but the
weather was superb and the natural setting of the course is surely one of
the most beautiful in the area.
The course itself was in excellent condition, but the rough hadn’t been cut
for some time so there was much ball searching involved for those golfers
unlucky enough to stray even a few yards off the fairways. The greens looked
good and the ball ran true, but as always here, they were painfully slow,
and many players struggled to get the ball to the hole.
Thomas Nyborg continued his good form to take the honours on the day ahead
of Colin Greig on a count back. Bernie Stevens and Tony Robbins took 3rd and
4th places respectively, also on a count back.
1st Thomas Nyborg (20) 35pts
2nd Colin Greig (11) 35pts
3rd Bernie Stevens (17) 33pts
4th Tony Robbins (12) 33pts
Near Pins: Bernie Stevens, Geoff Parker, Tim Winder and Paul Smith.
Wednesday, Dec. 19, Bangpra – Annual Championship (Day 1)
The first day of the annual championship is always a tense affair and
the slick greens at Bangphra always provide a stern test, especially since
our previous outing at the Navy course had seen us playing on the slowest
greens ever, so it was no surprise that there were 3 putts in abundance on
the opening holes.
Even pre-tournament favourite Paul Smith wobbled on the first few holes, but
quickly recovered his momentum and went on to record an even par round,
taking a one point lead in the championship ahead of Geoff Cox and John
Hughes.
The shot of the day went to Colin Greig who topped his tee shot on the par
3, twelfth hole, sending the ball skimming across the water in true Barnes
Wallis fashion, before skipping over the bank and rolling onto the green to
take the nearest pin mark. Fortunately for Colin, his mate Paul Smith was in
the group behind and put the ball within a couple of feet, to save Colin the
embarrassment of collecting his prize.
Previous champions John Hughes and Gerry Cooney were still realistically in
the running for the title, and they would be paired together with Paul Smith
and currently second placed Geoff Cox for the deciding round on Friday.
A Flight
1st Paul Smith (1) net 71
2nd Gerry Cooney (12) net 74
3rd Dave Ashman (14) net 75
B Flight
1st Geoff Cox (15) net 72
2nd John Hughes (18) net 72
3rd PJ Redmond (23) net 78
Near Pins: Gary Austin, Gerry Cooney, Paul Smith and Geoff Parker.
Friday, Dec. 19, Khao Kheow B & C - Annual Championship (Day 2)
The final day of the annual championship saw 16 players still in with a
chance (for most a very slim chance!) of winning the coveted trophy and they
were sent out in reverse order to lead the way ahead of the remaining 8
players, who were only competing in the simultaneous Stableford competition.
Although the course was in good condition, it’s always a difficult track to
play a medal competition, and several contenders dropped by the wayside
after falling victim to one of the many tricky holes here.
Paul Smith avoided all pitfalls and held his composure playing a steady
round of golf to win the day with a gross score of 75 (net 74) and an
overall net score of 145 for the two day competition. Geoff Cox recorded a
net score of 75 points to take the overall runner’s up place ahead of John
Hughes (net 78).
Back at the Ranch, new champion Paul Smith generously rang the bell to
celebrate his victory and a good time was had by all (especially the
championship competitors who also had their complimentary free meal).
Final Result:
1st Paul Smith (1) net 145
2nd Geoff Cox (15) net 147
3rd John Hughes (18) net 150
In the day’s Stableford competition Mike Brett won his maiden victory since
his recent return, ahead of Roger Mitchell, the only two players in the
whole field who played to their handicap or better on the day.
A Flight
1st Paul Smith (1) 34pts
2nd Geoff Cox (15) 33pts
3rd Mike Grasser (11) 32pts
B Flight
1st Mike Brett (17) 38pts

A long & bumpy road
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside

Phill and Brian after
Thursday’s game.
The headline refers to 2 different trips
this week, with the ‘long’ referring to our journey to play Wangjuntr
(Valley) course on Tuesday, Dec. 18. It was decided to play from the Blue
tees, no, not the back tees, at 6,550 yards as the Whites were a bit short
at only 6,020 yards. The scores were not good, so we may have to reconsider
for next time, search for that sufficient balance between enjoyment for as
many as possible, while still an adequate test of skill.
It was Jeff Wylie (6) who led the way with an unspectacular 32 points,
followed in by Owen Walkley (10) with 30. Near pins were spread around today
between, Owen, K, Trevor & Jeff.
Thursday was the ‘bumpy’ ride to Century Chonburi, although when all said
and done the course is worth the drive. The Whites were the tees for today
and at 6,571 yards on the card it provides a solid test. The scores were
pretty good today, across a range of handicap, so the length of the course
did not appear to be an issue, (unlike Tuesday), with over ½ the field
scoring 30 or more points.
Clive Hoseason (23) scored 36 points, which may well have been much better
as it included 4 “wipes”. The top 2 spots went to a solitary point better,
with Jeff (6) edging Phill Waite (14) on count back of the back 9, 22/20.
Near pins today went to Martin, Graham and Jeff with 2 on the back 9.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday, with ML
hosting prompt presentations on both days. As a PSC affiliated venue we
welcome ALL golfers, including seniors who have opted for the “Silver” tee
option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you
there, cheers & good golfing!

Alain & Jan on top at the Mountain
PSC golf from The Growling Swan

Alain Taddei, Ken Hole & Jan
Lovgreen.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, Dec. 17, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
There are lots of people coming & going at the moment
with Xmas just about upon us and after a “no show” we had 23 golfers
assembled at The Growling Swan in readiness for the trip to the popular
Mountain Shadow Golf Course.
We were happy to welcome back Volker Buley from Germany, Paul Sharples on a
break from his work in Oman and Ken Hole joining us once more.
With a later than normal tee time scheduled we departed the GS at 8.40 am
and this time headed off in 2 mini vans down No.7 as opposed to the busy
Sukhumvit route that we took last Friday. We arrived at the course 48
minutes later where it did not seem too busy and after taking our time with
preparation we were able to send our first group, a three-ball away 27
minutes ahead of schedule at 10.05 am. I am still puzzled as to why we could
not book our normal tee time of 10.00 am as the course was quiet but after
all – T.I.T.!
The weather was once again terrific and the course in super condition
although the greens did not appear quite as quick as the previous Friday in
the PSC Monthly. With just another 3-ball in front of us we proceeded at a
cracking pace and completed the front nine in one hour & fifty minutes which
included a drinks break and we maintained the same pace on the back nine
with another break for drinks which resulted in completion of the full round
in three hours & forty minutes. A very enjoyable round of golf with
excellent company on a top but at times tough golf course.
We were able to have 2 grades with four podium spots in each. A Grade was
for handicaps 0 to 20 and B Grade for 21 and over. We had nearest the pins
on all the par threes and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.

Mike Gosden, Allan Tranekaer &
Roy Dayton.
Before presentations big Ken “Let’s hear
it for” Bernek addressed the group and informed us of our success at the
previous Friday’s PSC Monthly Tournament held also at Mountain Shadow. This
time we only had one winner, which was your writer, Peter Blackburn, who won
the A Flight with a net 67, gross 78.
Back to the day’s results and as mentioned earlier the going had been tough
with just one golfer able to play better than his handicap and on this
occasion it was Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddai who won the A Grade with a
very good 38 points. In second place came Mike “Hunter” Gosden with 36
points followed by yours truly, Peter Blackburn in third spot with 35
points. With 2 players on 33 points a count back was necessary to decide
fourth spot and Ebrahim (17 point back nine) managed to prevail over veteran
Don Richardson (16 point back nine).
The B Grade was won by Jan Lovgreen who had 33 points and Max “Two Corsets”
Bracegirdle finished second on 32 points with Roy “Plums” Dayton third on 31
points. There were 4 golfers on 29 points vying for fourth spot so in a
count back it was Frank Donnelly (18 point back nine) who was successful
over J C Lhoste (16 point back nine), Mick “Bear” Wilks (15 point back nine)
& Wendy Bernek (13 point back nine).
A Flight (0-20)
1st Alain Taddei (19) 38pts
2nd Mike Gosden (13) 36pts
3rd Peter Blackburn (10) 35pts
4th Ebrahim (16) 33pts
B Flight (21+)
1st Jan Lovgreen (21) 33pts
2nd Max Bracegirdle (26) 32pts
3rd Roy Dayton (22) 31pts
4th Frank Donnelly (21) 29pts
Near Pins: 2nd – Kevin Waycott, 6th – Kevin Waycott, 13th – Ken
Bernek, 17th – Paul Sharples
Long Putts: 9th – Peter Blackburn, 18th – Max Bracegirdle
The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score
on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won by Ken
Hole who had earlier questioned as to why we were not playing off the blue
tees – I think he now knows why!
Big Ken “Let’s hear it for” Bernek paraded Deefa the Dog and collected many
donations for the needy of Pattaya from our ever generous Growling Swan
members.
Thursday, 20th December – Plutaluang, West & North - Stableford
On a glorious Pattaya morning we assembled at The Growling Swan and our
sign-up sheet had 21players ready to tackle the Plutaluang Golf Course for
the second time this month. It was good to see Stu Rifkin, Gary Monley &
Kevin Dinan joining us again and we welcomed back Scott “Chun” Lobenwein who
is here for a month from Gove in the Northern Territory of Australia.
We managed to get away from the GS right on schedule at 8.30 a.m. and headed
off south down No.3 in 2 mini vans & after just 40 minutes arrived at the
Navy course. It appeared to be reasonably busy and after checking in we were
informed that we would once again be playing the West & North nines which
prompted a few groans from some of our members as they consider it the much
harder combination – they were later proved to be correct!
With three groups of 4 & three groups of 3 our first four-ball teed off W1
15 minutes ahead of schedule at 9.45 am and with just a two-ball in front of
us we were able to proceed at a very good pace. The golf course was looking
in fine condition but although the greens looked immaculate they were
certainly playing their usual pace which was of course much slower than most
other courses around. Still, as they say, it’s the same for everyone and
judging by the scores just about everyone had trouble adjusting.
We completed the West nine in a tad over two hours and as the weather was
just about perfect a drinks stop was not required - in fact it was the same
on North nine which enabled us to complete the full round in the very good
time of four hours & five minutes. I had lots of fun playing with the
“French Connection” and although J C managed to lose 6 or 7 golf balls, to
his credit he maintained his composure and had a permanent smile on his face
as usual.
We were able to have 2 grades with five podium spots in each. A Grade was
for handicaps 0 to 21 and B Grade for 22 and over. We had nearest the pins
on all the par threes and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
I cannot remember a day’s golf in Pattaya producing so many “winning” scores
and indeed no-one managed to play better than 5 shots worse than their
handicap. In A Grade, with 2 golfers on 31 points a count back was required
to separate them and that resulted in first place being awarded to Mike
“Hunter” Gosden (16 point back nine) with Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei
(15 point back nine) in second place. Your writer, Peter Blackburn came
third with 30 points and in another count back it was Stu Rifkin (16 point
back nine) finishing fourth from big Ken “Let’s hear it for” Bernek (15
point back nine) in fifth spot with both players having 29 points.
Another 31 points was good enough to win B Grade with Roy “Plums” Dayton
being the victor and with 2 players on 30 points it was Max “Two Corsets”
Bracegirdle (16 point back nine) who secured second spot from Sandy
“Leiperfrog” Leiper (13 point back nine) in third place on a count back.
With 4 golfers having 27 points there were 2 who were going to miss out
after the count back but it was Volker Buley (16 point back nine) who
captured fourth place from J C Lhoste (14 point back nine, 13 points on the
last 6 holes) in fifth place with Geri Crilly (14 point back nine, 9 points
on the last 6 holes) and Kevin Dinan (13 point back nine) being the unlucky
ones.
A Flight (0-21)
1st Mike Gosden (13) 31pts
2nd Alain Taddei (19) 31pts
3rd Peter Blackburn (10) 30pts
4th Stu Rifkin (15) 29pts
5th Ken Bernek (14) 29pts
B Flight (22+)
1st Roy Dayton (22) 31pts
2nd Max Bracegirdle (26) 30pts
3rd Sandy Leiper (35) 30pts
4th Volker Buley (30) 27pts
5th J C Lhoste (22) 27pts
Near Pins: W3 - Jim Bell, W8 – Bjarne Kjaer, N3 – Bent Agerbo, N6 –
Sandy Leiper
Long Putts: W9 – J C Lhoste, N9 – Bjarne Kjaer
The Growling Swan NAGA Award was won by Allan “Parrott” Tranaeker who
accepted the award somewhat reluctantly but in good spirit. Big Ken “Let’s
hear it for” Bernek paraded Deefa the Dog and collected many donations for
the needy of Pattaya from our ever generous Growling Swan members.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low &
high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play

Grant & ‘Chopper’ at the sharp end on Festive Fun Day
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Chopper (left) & Grant -
Friday’s winners.
Monday, Dec. 17, Burapha - Stableford
Thirty-two Players to Burapha to play the C & D courses off the
white markers. The starter got us away early as the course was not heavily
booked and the first four groups finished in under four hours but the back
groups struggled to keep up.
The weather was perfect - sunny with a lovely breeze to keep the temperature
down. The course was in good condition and much of the rough has been cut
now that the course has dried out. The greens have been finally returned to
their normal great condition but some of the tees still need time to
recover.
Welcome to first timer at the Outback, Adrian Waters and also great to see
Dave Buchanan, Mike Bender and Steve Reece for the first time this season,
and hello again to Vince Butler, Norman Reed, Don Anderson, Bob Giles, Paul
Kaye and Stuart Walters.
Only two players broke or played to handicap and the best score for the day
was returned by Svenn Ole Lund who won Division 2 with a brilliant 43 points
off his 14 handicap, a great round of golf Svenn. A long way back in second
was Burapha regular Pete Stonebridge with 35 followed home by Stuart Walters
in third on 33.
John Cunningham won Division 1 with 36 points off his 8 handicap from Dave
Buchanan, who shot 35 off scratch, Dave beating two others, Grant & Paul on
count back. Div C went to the likeable Irish rogue for the second week in a
row, Ivan Plunkett creeping in with only 32 points from David Davies on 30
and Jon Kittilsen with 28.
Four ‘2’s went to Mike Bender, Steve Reece, Rick Kaban and Norman Reed.
Div A (0-11)
1st John Cunningham (8) 36pts
2nd Dave Buchanan (0) 35pts
3rd Grant Airey (8) 35pts
Div B (12-15)

2nd Pete Stonebridge (15) 35pts
3rd Stuart Walters (14) 33pts
Div C (16+)
1st Ivan Plunkett (22) 32pts
2nd David Davies (26) 30pts
3rd Jon Kittilsen (20) 28pts

Ladies on parade at GreenValley
(from the left) Gieselle, Ruk, Nut & Dah.
Tuesday, Dec. 18, Burapha – Stableford
General Jack had to blow the dust off his clubs as his son Harry
dragged him out onto the course for the first time in quite a while and a
very special welcome to Harry who’s here for a couple of weeks before
starting his new job in Dubai, so lots of luck with that. Also welcome back
to Eddie Smith and Paul Sirban, as well as newcomers, Keith & Gieselle
Ripkin, who hail from Jack’s former golf club in the UK, Harleyford near
Marlow, Bucks and also to Clive Dean.
An excellent turnout again here at Khao Kheow as 32 players tackled the B &
C nines from the yellow tees, which must be said were in good condition and
are continuing to improve as all the low season maintenance work is
beginning to pay off. Even so, Khao Kheow once again was the winner as
nobody broke handicap with the day’s top score being 35pts, scored by Mitch
Black to win Div A. Div B went to Sel Wegner, also with 35 and Div C went to
Jon Kittilsen, who was playing his penultimate round before returning home
to the cold, with 34.
Our thanks today to Suzi for organising the day so aptly and managing to
squeeze into second place in Div C with 31pts; a quite remarkable feat, when
having to play in the last group not only with her husband John, which would
normally be bad enough but also with Harry & Jack.
There were five ‘2’s, four of them on C8 from Stephen Mann, Joe Mooneyham,
Kerry Rothman & Sugar Ray and one on B3 from Peter Erikson.
Div A (0-10)
1st Mitch Black (3) 35pts
2nd Grant Airey (8) 34pts
3rd Peter Erikson (5) 33pts
Div B (11-18)
1st Sel Wegner (13) 35pts
2nd Joe Mooneyham (15) 33pts
3rd Jean Morel (18) 31pts
Div C (19+)
1st Jon Kittilsen (20) 34pts
2nd Suzi Lawton (20) 31pts
3rd Sugar Ray Handford (19) 31pts

Harry (right) and John, ready to
take on Khao Kheow.
Wednesday, Dec. 19, Pattana -
Stableford
On the A & C loops here at Pattana, we were spared the tough
opening hole on B, which maybe paved the way for a stunning 40pts from Bob
St. Aubin, who was delighted with his effort.
This wonderful course is growing in popularity and the staff are always
polite and helpful so it was slightly disappointing that only 8 turned out
today to play, maybe the success of Siam Plantation played every Wednesday,
is a contributory factor.
We played off the forward tees today with ‘lift clean and place’ on the
fairways, but the ground is drying out fast and only a couple of holes still
had wet areas.
In second place was Barry Copestake, also with a fine score of 38 with Sel
Wegner taking third on 36. Well done to Harry whose golf improved
dramatically by playing without his Dad watching him.
There were three ‘2’s, one from Rick Kaban and two from Bob St. Aubin.
1st Bob St. Aubin (13) 40pts
2nd Barry Copestake (16) 38pts
3rd Sel Wegner (13) 36pts
Wednesday, Dec. 19, Siam Plantation – Stableford
A Full House of 16 players at this great course on the A & C
nines, with some of us starting on A & some on C, but A being declared by
Capt’ Steve as the back nine.
Bobby Driggs only arrived the night before but this canny little player
showed no signs of jet lag or tiredness, trouncing the field with an
excellent 43pts. If that wasn’t enough, imagine you’d shot 40pts on a course
like this and you only wind up third; that’s what happened to Grant Airey as
he was beaten into second place on count back by Rosco, both scoring the
same.
There were three ‘2’s from Rosco, Mark McDonald & Bobby Driggs.
1st Bobby Driggs (14) 43pts
2nd Rosco Langoulant (13) 40pts
3rd Grant Airey (8) 40pts
Friday, Dec. 21, Green Valley – Xmas Scramble
The interesting thing about the Outback Xmas Fun Day & Caddie
Party is that it does exactly what it says on the tin; not only did caddies
play in the main event at Green Valley but others came back to the Outback
from Pattaya Country Club as well as a couple from Siam Plantation & Laem
Chabang, to join in the fun.
In terms of numbers, 57 played in a two-person scramble at Green Valley and
were joined in the celebrations back at the Outback by another 12 of the14
players from Pattaya Country Club who had their own style of Xmas Fun Day,
where the player was not allowed to putt – that was down to the caddie, and
eleven of those caddies and Yui, the caddiemaster also came back for the fun
at the Outback.
It was a long day for the General, but with the cards ably correlated by
Suzi, they were able to announce the winners by just about 6 o’clock by
which time the party was in full swing, particularly from the Pattaya C.C.
mob who had been on the go since about 4pm. with the party & karaoke
continuing late into the evening.
Before announcing the results, Jack announced the Outback plans for next
year’s new tournament; “The Race to Bangkok”. Based on the style of the
European Tour’s “Race to Dubai”, it will run throughout the year culminating
in a final event yet to be determined. Each time a player plays in an
Outback event, the prize money will be converted to points and tallied up
over the year with the top 24 available players going forward to play in the
grand final; when the points will be reset to zero.
We unfortunately had one “no show”, so one group played as a three ball with
an allowance of 12½% whereas the rest of the field (2 balls) received 25%
but it seemed to work out fair enough. So in sixth place, beating Kerry Beck
& Dave Coller on count back, was the Green Valley member pairing of Jack
Butler & Ed Horrocks with 67.8. Fifth went to a pair who had never met; a
Scotsman, who has only been playing a few weeks and was over the moon with
his first podium finish, Chris Smart, and Aussie Paul Rodgers, them
finishing on 67.2.
Then came our odd three-ball, Sel, Tim & Mick with 66.6 just behind Paul
Housten & Martin Kingswood in third place on 65.8. Outback regulars Paul
Greenaway and Steve Plant took second place with a fine sub-par round of 70
(net 65), only to be outdone by Grant & Kerry (or Chopper as he is more
familiarly known) on 62.8.
The interesting thing about the winners, they nearly didn’t play together as
Grant wanted a better partner since his mate Chopper hadn’t been playing up
to speed, but Grant succumbed, just as well – but the handicapper is going
to get you Grant, you have had a very solid week, even if you have not
beaten your handicap – 7 next week!
Finally Happy Birthday to Sugar who very kindly sponsored two of the
near-pins and thanks also to Bob St. Aubin, who sponsored the other two.
The near-pins were won by Mike Bender (4th), Jarrod Braithwaite (9th), Jack
Butler (12th) and Sel Wegner (16th).
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from Sukhumvit Road along
Soi Siam Country. Call Jack on 087 941 2474.

Rick Holmes returns in style
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, Dec. 17, Crystal Bay -
Stableford
CSS 72
1st Phil Groves (7) 38pts
2nd Mark Cooper (12) 38pts
3rd Shuichi Kodaka (15) 36pts
4th Rodney Nabbe (9) 35pts
5th Alan Pilkington (8) 34pts
6th Kenny Priddy (24) 34pts
A bright day and a course in very good condition awaited the hopefuls from
The Haven when they arrived to play the B and C courses after a quick run
along Sukumvit that takes around 35 minutes now that the road is virtually
nonstop all the way to Sir Racha.

Phil Groves.
Although the course is not yet back to its old standard it is now once again
one of the places to visit during a golfing trip and with wide fairways and
flat greens that run true it is a course that can be scored on, although the
CSS just about stayed on the line at 72 for the day.
Phil Groves relished the opportunity to get below handicap even though in
the event he racked up far to many single pointers, five in all, on his way
to a two under return that was just enough to see him home with a winning
count back of 19 to 18 over runner up Mark Cooper who is going through a
fine run of form following his success in the IPGC Club Championships.
Shuichi Kodaka can usually be found among the podium winners, as he was once
again with his third place level handicap round. After opening with a three
under handicap front nine he then slipped badly to end in the places instead
of at the top of the list.
Rodney Nabbe, having seen his handicap reduced to single figures following a
good run of scores, looked in good shape to continue with yet another really
good score after going out in four under for 22 points, he then closed the
round out with five singles for a one over handicap and fourth place finish.
Alan Pilkington started extremely slowly having just five points after five
holes, but he then rallied strongly to take fifth after winning a count back
over Kenny Priddy by a margin of 21 to 20 after Kenny just failed to get
back on terms after he also started badly with just 1 point from the first
three.
There were no 2’s in the first division but Gary Warren and John Squitiero
showed them how by getting one a piece in the second division.
Prior to the presentations there were welcome backs for Mark Cooper, Martin
Grimoldby, Kenny Priddy, Fred Land and Shane Heavey.

Ole Stamnes.
Wednesday, Dec. 19, Pattana A & C (Yellow tees) -
Stableford
CSS 74
1st Ole Stamnes (27) 38pts
2nd Wayne Challis (14) 37pts
3rd Sekio Ojima (22) 35pts
4th Rodney Hayes (15) 34pts
5th Rodney Nabbe (9) 34pts
6th Phil Groves (7) 33pts
Ole Stamnes had one of his very good days as he leisurely took on the par 73
A and C courses at the immaculate Pattana Country Club. Although the length
at 6,300 yards certainly helped, he still needed to get the ball in the hole
after he had started out the front nine with a quiet three over handicap
score and then closed with a stunning five under handicap inward nine to win
by the slimmest of margins from Wayne Challis, who had a much more even
18/19 couple of nines.
Sekio Ojima, who had made all the running on day one in the Club
Championships before slipping on day two, once again started well but then
faded, scoring only three points from the last three holes and had to be
satisfied with third.
Rodney Nabbe was once again in contention but lost out to the other Rodney,
Hayes that is, in a count back losing by 18 to 16 and settling for fifth as
Rodney Hayes took fourth.
Wayne Challis cleared out the rollover 2’s pool in the first division while
Sekio Ojima had the lone one in the second division.
Prior to the presentations there was a welcome for new member Adrian Cook,
savouring the delights of Thailand for the very first time. He was later
taken out by Rodney Nabbe to show him a few of the sights which took until
5.30 am. There was also a welcome back for Mick Bogunovich who needed no
hand to hold as he got straight back into the swing and then later fell out
of it.

Rick Holmes.
Friday, Dec. 21, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Rick Holmes (20) 40pts
2nd Vincent Gras (19) 37pts
3rd Dan MacCarthy (19) 36pts
4th Phil Groves (7) 35pts
5th Mike Korney (19) 34pts
Once again back to the newly renovated back nine at Pattaya Country Club
where unfortunately the requirement that carts be kept to the cart paths
only on the back nine reduced the field somewhat, which seems a great pity
as there is little damage that would be done if carts were at least allowed
in the rough even though the fairways are actually the best part of the
renovations, having taken much better root after presumably a lot more
attention than the rough areas.
But the CSS showed that the course can be played with some measure of
success after a ‘lift and place’ rule was put into effect for the day’s
competition.
Rick Holmes, who was making a comeback to singles competition, shattered the
field with a four under handicap round that led the rest by three shots,
with the next best being Vincent Gras at one under and he was followed in by
Dan MacCarthy, whose trip to the far north of Thailand had obviously cheered
him up tremendously and put him in a very positive frame of mind as he
returned his best score ever in Thailand.
Phil Groves made it on to the podium for the third time in the week with
another solid performance while Mike Korney rounded out the honourable
mentions one further back in fifth.
There were no 2’s in the first division but Rick Holmes added to his days
winnings by sweeping the second division pool slotting in the lone one.
Back at The Haven there were welcome backs for Rick Holmes at last returning
to singles golf after a break of over six months whilst recovering from a
long term injury, and Wilf Wellman who had been recovering from too many
late nights and Dan MacCarthy returning from surveying his northern estates.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile
082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach
Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do
not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days that you wish to play. A schedule
of courses to be played can be found on our web site at
www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Ramsay roars back
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society got back to normality on Monday,
17th December, after an intense week at the IPGC Annual Championship, with a
trip to Greenwood to play a stableford event on the C and A nines. The field
was divided into two flights at eighteen and under and the course was in
good order with the greens slowly improving after months of mediocrity.
In a competitive second flight, Pat Murphy returned 33 points for third
place, just one behind the winning pair of Larry Ang and Henry Mah. In the
top flight Wichai Tananusorn posted a fine 35 points with his best gross of
the day to give him third place. Joe Niisato scored 37 points for second
place and Ronnie Ramsay returned an excellent 39 points for the win.
There were birdie ‘2’s for Wichai, on A6, as well as Joe Niisato (A6) and
Steve Evans (C6). The Booby Bevy went to Masashi Iizumi when the promise of
a fine round with 21 points on the front nine dissipated on the back with
only eleven added. Rabbi’s free beer draw was won by Ray Banks and for him
it was the only highlight of the day!
Ronnie has better memories of a day expertly stewarded by Khun Wichai and
Ray Banks!
Larry adapts to change
Green Valley’s customary high season penchant for changing courses without
notice resulted in a very late change of venue on Wednesday, 19th December,
when the Pattaya Golf Society took on Pattana A and B nines in a stableford
event. The course was in its usual fine condition and the field was divided
into two flights at 18 and under, the second flight playing from the yellow
tees.
The second flight found the going tough but the tough got going with Jim
Ferris and Pat Murphy posting 29 points each for a share of third place. In
second was Larry Ang with thirty points and the winner was long hitting Ken
Grimes with 33 points.
In the top flight long hitters held sway again with third place held down by
Robbie Taylor on 31 points, Ronnie Ramsay in second on 33 and the accurate
Larry Slattery taking an excellent win with 34 points.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the boss’s free beer draw was won by Ray
Banks. There was no comfort for the gaffer either as he ended the day
spending five hours on a drip suffering from complete dehydration. Just
another bloody day in paradise!
Banks back in credit
The Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Khao Kheow on Friday, 21st December,
to play a stableford competition over the B and C nines on a course which is
continuing to improve from its low season condition. Considering the global
importance of the date the club management had refused to sanction a rain
check if the world came to an end before the round was completed.
The field was set in two flights with the cut coming at fifteen and under.
In the second flight Kiwi Alan Flynn took third place with 31 points whilst
John Chelo and Jim Ferris shared the victory with 33 points each.
The top flight saw marginally better scores with Martin Grimoldby and Robbie
Taylor sharing second place on 33 points but the round of the day belonged
to Ray Banks who achieved best gross figures of eighty in his round of 37
points.
Neil McIntosh and Alan Pilkington both birdied the par three B3 whilst Ken
Priddy had similar success on the Island Hole for a share of the ‘2’s pot.
Rabbi’s free beer draw was won by “Banjo” Bannister whilst the Booby Bevy
was reserved for Peter Masters after his round of very little sparkle. Still
Peter, it wasn’t the end of the world!
The group was very capably stewarded by Ray Banks in place of a poorly golf
geezer and it seems everyone enjoyed the day at Khao Kheow.

Kelly a class
apart
IPGC golf from The Links
Sunday, Dec. 16, Green Valley –
Stableford
We returned to Green Valley after a weeks break, once
again in perfect golfing weather, to find the course much improved since our
previous visit.
Our ranks were boosted by the guest appearance of tour hopeful Patrick
Kelly, who showed his class by shooting a one under gross 71 for 34 points,
playing off the notoriously difficult blue tees. Japanese gentleman golfer
Sekio Ojima was second with 33 points, beating Les Cobban on count back.
Les’s round was all the more impressive as he too chose to play off the blue
tees.
The ‘2’s were shared by Patrick Kelly, Les Cobban and the other member of
the blue tee 3-ball, Tim Wilkinson.
1st Peter Kelly (+3) 34pts
2nd Sekio Ojima (23) 33pts
3rd Les Cobban (9) 33pts
Thursday, Dec. 20, Greenwood – Stableford
With no golf on Tuesday due to the Links supporting
the PAGS for the final time, our next outing was to Greenwood on the
Thursday. Much has been said about the condition of the course in recent
months, but it is now fully recovered and in all round excellent condition,
although the fairways and greens on the C course could do with a trim.
We were allocated the toughest combination of the A & C courses, and with
the car park virtually empty and a clear course in front, the first 3-balls
out completed their rounds in less than 3½ hours, just how golf is meant to
be played.
Scoring was generally good, with Rod Nabbe playing his final round with the
group before heading back to Australia for Christmas, coming third with 35
points off his new single figure handicap. Russell Exley, whose handicap has
been travelling the wrong way in recent months and now into double figures
for the first time in many years, showed some return to form to take second
place with 36 points, one behind Jon Batty.
1st Jon Batty (8) 37pts
2nd Russell Exley(10) 36pts
3rd Rod Nabbe (9) 35pts
Note: The Links depart from the hotel on Soi Buakhao at 10.30am on
Tuesdays and Thursdays and 9.45am for Green Valley every Sunday. Sign up at
the hotel or contact Jon on 080 021 1034. A full schedule of courses can be
found on the IPGC website: www.ipgc.org.

Lotus Valley hosts charity golf day for Jesters

Lewis Underwood (2nd left) accepts a cheque
on behalf of the Jesters Care for Kids for money raised by the Lotus
Valley Charity Classic.
Lotus Valley Golf Resort hosted the Lotus Valley
Charity Classic on Dec. 1 to support the Jesters Care for Kids charity
drive. The event was a tremendous success attracting a full field of
golfers, media and tournament supporters and raised 166,000 THB for the
Jesters Care for Kids Charity.
In attendance were several members of the Jesters including the Care for
Kids Chairman Lewis Underwood who took a moment during the prize
presentation to explain some of the many projects the charity has
underway. Clearly proud of the charity’s work over the past 15 years,
Lewis spoke about how some children have received Jesters support from
the beginning of their education all the way through to earning
university degrees. He welcomed participants to visit the Care for Kids
website, www.care4kids. info, to see how the charity is helping people
all over Thailand.

Mike Moir (right) receives
the Low Gross trophy after shooting a bogey-free 70.
The Lotus Valley Charity Classic boasted a fine list of tournament
sponsors including Vespario, the supplier of Vespa Motorcycles in
Thailand, Coca-Cola, Concepts Golf Management from Singapore, TurfPro
Golf Management, Golf One, Fenix, Chang Beer and Lakchai Golf School.
Pro Lakchai from the Golf Channel’s “15th Club” co-hosted the prize
presentation and was on hand all day at the 13th tee providing swing
analysis free of charge. Pro Lakchai films the “15th Club” at Lotus
Valley each week and the show airs Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday
afternoons.
A member of TurfPro Golf’s team and General Manager of Lotus Valley,
Derek Schade, couldn’t have been happier with the day. “We are very
lucky to work for some really good people and as a result of that we’ve
attracted even more caring and generous people to be a part of this
event,” he explained.
Fenix Golf, well-known for their support of many of Thailand’s top
players and a supplier for many events around the country may have to
consider redirecting some of their sponsorship funds towards owner Mike
Moir. Mike represented his brand proudly, taking the Overall Low Gross
honors with a flawless, bogey-free, score of 70.
Low Net by system-36 went to Naset Noyjinda, winning a count-back over
the popular man from Big Bear Golf, Han Song Yong. Naset shot a score of
75 for a net 69.
The tournament was clearly a success raising a huge sum for the Jesters
Care for Kids, the course conditions were immaculate and the management
and staff of Lotus Valley put on a first class show.

Pearce makes it a double
The Billabong Golf Group

Bill Marsden, Alan Beck, Karen Craigie, Capt. Bob and Greig
Ritchie.
.Monday, Dec. 17, The Emerald - Stableford
Emerald is in great condition now, we played there about
3 months ago and the green surrounds were in terrible condition. I
know that things need doing around the course maintenance wise but a
little at a time would have been nice. Anyway, saying that it was a
pleasure to be here today with 3 groups.
It wasn’t a great day out for Greig Ritchie however as he withdrew
after 6 holes and went to his car to sleep. Hope you’re feeling a
bit better now mate.
We welcomed John Ayers, Tony Jone’s and Mark Graham and I put these
guys out with Bob Pearce who celebrated his 73rd birthday on Sunday
and believe it or not he was the baby of the group!
Winning today was the aforementioned Bob Pearce with 36 points ahead
of Brian Maddox in second with 35 points, John Locke third with 34,
and in fourth was Darl White with 33.
There was only one 2 and that went to John Ayers - I think the
oldest golfer out there today.
Wednesday, Dec. 19, Green Valley - Stableford
Wednesday golf from the Billabong was as usual at the
Green Valley golf course which is in very good condition. Scores
were in the mid range with the highest being 37 points scored by two
players. The first place went to Jeff Ryves from the Golf Centre on
a count back from Bill Marsden.
Three ‘2’s were recorded today with two going to Paul Sharples and
the other to Jeff Ryves.
The temperature was hot for most of the day with very little breeze
until late in the game. After golf it was back to the bar to have a
cold beer with the Beck’s who arrived from Christchurch late the
previous night.
Friday, Dec. 21, Treasure Hill - Stableford
Treasure Hill was the order of the day and apart from the traffic
getting there it is a great course that takes no prisoners, as you
will see by the scores.
Five groups playing and we got away on time with the first group
going round in 3½ hours, which is really quick at this time of the
year. It got a bit hot around noon but until then it was perfect
weather for golf.
Welcome back to Thailand to Alan Beck and his lovely partner Karen
Craigie, whom the Capt played with today. Sorry Greig and I took the
money but really it was Greig that did all the damage, one birdie
from me was my total contribution to the score card, I mean 8 points
the first nine and 11 on the back tells you it was your mate that
did you the damage.
The winner was that man again ‘Mr. Consistency’ Bob Pearce with 36
points, then there were three players on 32; Phil Waite got the nod
for second over Greig Ritchie and in fourth was Jeff North. Fifth
place went to Darl White with 31 and from there it got a little
worse all the way down to 19 points.
There were four ‘s’2 from Darl White and Jeff North, who got one
each, and the other 2 went to Bob Pearce, the one he got on the 17th
was almost a hole in one.

Mark edges Mashi on count back
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Mark West & Carol Kubicki
Derek Brook
Tuesday, Dec. 18, Pleasant Valley – Stableford
This course is becoming a standard on our monthly schedule and
over the last few years has continued to improve, so at this time of the
year it has moved up to a Tuesday spot. On this day, early at Bert’s, the
place was full and despite a few last minute drop-outs we still had a good
number who turned up. Then it was into the cars and down the road, after
most had sampled Bert’s golfers breakfast, it put a bit of energy into the
players.
Arriving at the course we were not surprised to see that there were a fair
number of golfers there and after a quick book-in we were soon outside and
ready to go, however, it was to find we were off the 10th Tee, no problem
really as the back-nine is not a bad test.
Soon off we found that the fairways were well grassed and in fact had a lot
of water on them, however the ball normally had a bit of run even if it did
pick up a bit of mud. On the fairways the ball did tend to sit up a bit as
it was grassy, but get into the rough and it proved a test.
We battled on and for a change the reason was that it was hot and humid, not
pouring down, it was one of those days that seem to be really draining. Me I
was fine, I was in a cart so could sit and watch as these fine ‘young’ men
proved how fit they were and melted in the sun.
It was a decent round really, but there was a bit of flagging towards the
end. Even my cart complained and didn’t stop making a bleeping noise till
the mechanic came out. Still, with good fairways, heavy rough and greens
that were a bit scarred, we all still enjoyed it.
The showers here are good, and a cool shower went down well, and in the
restaurant, after we had ordered, one of our more adventuresome players went
outside to discover they had a fine barbeque. Bit late for some, a sign
would have sent many outside. Weird.
Back at Bert’s I was a little surprised we were so late, and Bert’s was
packed. Still, Ted moved and allowed me to sit down, fine fellow, and I was
reminded that Mashi, ‘Master Tailor’ that he is, had made a special cover
for the seat I sit on. What a fine fellow, even more padding in the right
area.
So onto the presentation: In the A Flight, 0 to 18, we had a count back on
41 points that saw Mark West as the winner and Mashi in second. No
favoritism was gained for my seat. In third was Ted Morris with 37 points.
In the B Flight all the players had ignored the ‘Kubicki Warning’ I had put
out, so the winner was Carol Kubicki with 37 points. In second was Jack
Robertson with 36 points and in third was Daryl Evans with 35.
Results over I went and sat on my newly padded seat and had a few beers.
Near Pins: Steve Hamstad, Paul Sharples, Tom Cotton, Ted Morris
Long Putts: Carole Kubicki, Mashi Kaneta
Friday, Dec. 21, The Emerald – Stableford
Have you ever had one of those days? Well this is how this day,
and the previous afternoon, turned out. There I was sitting with my feet up
on the Thursday afternoon, with the prospect of a free run into Xmas, and no
intention of playing till Boxing Day. Then the phone rang and I was
volunteered to run Friday as ‘The Warberger’ was sick. So no problem, jump
in my car and nip around to Bert’s next morning and off we go. So I told the
wife I needed the car and as she was ‘visiting family’, no problem she would
drive back by late Thursday.
Late Thursday the good news was that the car would not start, ‘listen to the
clicking when I turn it over’. So no car, and even worse no golf clubs, what
to do!? So I phoned Keith and suggested he play golf next day, but as he was
‘having a drink’ he did not fancy it. Then came the bombshell, “You can
borrow my car and clubs.” Now Keith’s car is practically new, so a great
honour, except ‘Madam’ would look for every mark and playing with Keith’s
clubs would be really good, especially as I sold him the irons ten years ago
as I couldn’t hit them.
However must is must, so next morning off I went in Keith’s nice new car to
book players in for the game. Suffice to say the transport was really tight
with Dick and Mashi not there, so it was crow bar the players into the
transport and finally off we all went.
We were soon onto the first tee, and fortunately were straight off. The
course was as you would expect, the fairways were a bit hairy and the greens
were used, but the main problem was the heat. It was a hot and humid day and
all the players were bushed,
Round soon over it was into transport and back to Bert’s, where Keith was
waiting. He tells me that he just came for a beer, but we know better. At
least I did not have to drive it again and not a mark in sight. Then into
the presentation.
In the A Flight, 0 to 15, the winner was Mike Gaussa with 36 points ahead of
Alan Sullivan in second with 35 points and Max Scott in third with 34.
In the B Flight we had the best score with the winner Mick Coghlan having 38
points ahead of Mark West with 35 points and Walter Baechli in third with
32. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Mike Gaussa, Rob Brown, Brian Parish, Noel Pittard
Long Putts: Max Scott, Mike Gaussa

Thursday, Dec. 20, Pleasant Valley – Stableford
Pleasant Valley today and arriving there we discovered that a
Thai tournament was going off both tees at 11 a.m. so we had a two-tee start
ourselves at 10 a.m. The weather was fine with sunny skies and a good
breeze. There was just a minor stoppage at the turn but thanks to the
management we had priority and it didn’t hold us up too much. The course was
in fine condition.
Back in the clubhouse after a trek of 4 hours and 30 minutes, welcome went
out to Uni from Iceland and Alan from the UK and a goodbye to Michele
Sancillo back to Spain for 3 weeks.

‘Michelle’ Chatt’s big score
Backyard Golf Society

‘Michelle’ Chatt celebrates at
Blue Sky Bar.
It was an historic day for the Backyard
Golf Society today as we had our first female winner of the stableford
competition. ‘Michelle’ Chatt, a clone of Mike ‘the Taxi’ Chatt, had a great
round with 40 points, narrowly beating Don ‘the Divorcer’ who scored 39.
‘Michelle’ played off a handicap of 14 and went off the same tees as the men
so well done to her.
The near-pin was again won by Golden Trowel’s boyfriend; he is becoming a
crack shot of the last par 3 on the course. The skins were well shared with
3 to JJ, 3 to Irish John, 2 to ‘Second-hand’ Bob who had a birdie for a
5-pointer on the difficult par-3 13th hole, 6 to Don ‘the Divorcer’ and 1
each to Golden Trowel’s boyfriend, Dan ‘the Diet Whiskey Man’ and ‘Michelle’
Chatt. The 18th will be rolled over to next week as 3 players in the same
four-ball had birdies on it.
Golden Trowel’s boyfriend once again regaled us with stories of his Reg
Grundy’s and we then adjourned down the road for a few ales where John #2 –
aka Army John (*) – found his place occupied by another punter. Blue Sky and
Kisses had a good day’s takings as the lads consumed quite a few ‘coldies’
to cool down after a warm day on the course.
(*) is also the official Backyard Golf Society groupie; he never misses the
post-game session down the road and even has his own dedicated taxi to the
weekly event.
Our football pool was won again by Bun in Blue Sky; it seems the bars have a
winner almost every week now and perhaps some of the girls will turn up to
our end-of-year beverage consumption session next week in Jomtien.
Dan ‘the Diet Whiskey Man’ has arranged new shirts for any member wanting
one and he will now ask if they make one large enough to fit Don ‘the
Divorcer’s’ ample mid-section.

PSC rocks into Christmas with swinging party

PSC President Tony Oakes (2nd right) and PSC
Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham (far right) present a cheque to the San Fan
Project.
Story - Nigel Cannon/ Photos - William
Macey
For over 400 Pattaya Sports Club members and their guests,
12/12/12 will be a date they will remember fondly as they were enjoying
themselves at the PSC’s annual Christmas Party, held on this special day.
This year the doors at the Town-in-Town hotel opened at 6.30 p.m. and, as is
always the case, there were many waiting well before that time. Former Vice
President Bobby Clark, President Tony Oakes, Social Chairman Nigel Cannon
and PSC’s very own Santa (Rick Bevington) were primed and ready to welcome
all to this popular event.

Santa poses for a photo with
Margaret.
At 7 p.m. some 50 children from the Pattaya Orphanage,
both young and old, came into the main room dressed in traditional Christmas
costumes ready to sing Christmas carols – in English.
Social Chairman Nigel Cannon welcomed all to this year’s party and the
Charity Chairman, William Macey, introduced Khun Toy and the children,
reminding all that unlike most of those present, these children had no
family to take care of them. The Orphanage is their home and family which
the PSC is happy to support. All, both foreigners and Thais, were spellbound
for the next 30 minutes as the children sang with joy and happiness.
President Tony Oakes then presented Khun Toy with a bouquet in appreciation.

The first day of Christmas.
Tony then went on to formally open the party with the
announcement that the grand buffet was now open and the Town-in-Town band
would play soft music. As usual, many compliments were received about the
quality of the food.
Nigel then said there would be 5 ‘Lewiinski’s Lovelies’ plus Mike Jeffery
coming around to sell raffle tickets for the 20 prizes on offer and the
final 2 tickets sharing 50% of the cash taken.
It was then time for the cabaret. This year, following his brief set last
year when he stood in at the party, Nigel introduced local radio presenter,
TV producer and former member of ‘Brotherhood of Man’ Barry Upton, who had
just announced his engagement to Wanna that morning. Within a few minutes
many were ‘bopping away’ as Barry played and sang everybody’s favourites.
After 45 minutes Barry took a well-earned break whilst two presentations
were made on behalf of PSC.

Barry and Wanna announce their
engagement to the PSC members.
Nigel introduced Margaret Grainger and gave a potted
history of her Hand to Hand Foundation and she was surprised and delighted
when Santa presented her with a bouquet.
Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham and President Tony then presented a cheque to
Khun Tukta, Manager Sports Promotion of Boonrawd Brewery for her charity,
San Fan Project.
Raffle time followed and little Bee Jackson picked out the tickets with
Nigel calling the numbers while Tony and Joe presented the prizes aided by
Mike Coleman. The last 2 numbers were drawn by Santa and 2 ladies went home
very happy with a large cash sum.

A happy 50/50 winner gets an
early Christmas gift from Santa and Tony Oakes.
Barry Upton then returned to much applause and had the
whole place rocking for the next 45 minutes.
The Town-in-Town band then took over and played until the bewitching hour of
midnight with many still dancing the night away. Many took the opportunity
to thank PSC for another great night.
Following the party, Social Chairman and chief organiser Nigel Cannon
commented, “It (the party) was another great success and I would express my
appreciation to Town-in-Town who make the running of an event like this so
much easier. I would also like to thank my fellow PSC Executive Committee
members for their support, and finally to Barry Upton – a real star!”

Santa Claus present to the second 50/50 winner.

Sweetnam sweeps to victory

Monday, Dec. 17, Pattaya C.C. –
Stableford
Since last month’s visit here there have now been some
improvements to the condition of this course and the majority enjoyed the
round, so we are now booked in here again in three weeks time. There were
eight groups out today and the first group teed ahead of schedule at 9.40.
The cut today was 9-17 and 18+ and playing off 15 for the past three months
and his last time today before his cut, Jerry Sweetnam won Division 1 with
43 points. Peter Pedder took second place on 35 points and Mike Chatt beat
Sid Crawley and Lindsay Phillips on a 19/16/15 back-nine count back after
they all came in with 33 points.
Mauri Friman won Division 2 with 37 points after beating Andy Oz on a 20/18
count back and Mike Fitzgerald came in third with a 21/18 count back win
over Jean Morel, both scoring 34 points.
Near pins went to Dennis Scougall, Dave Stewart (2), Jerry Sweetnam, Kari
Aarnio, Jim Connelly and Matti Ylitalo.
There was a rollover in the ‘2’s in division 1 and Steptoe’s old mate Rodney
Howett birdied the 16th to take the pot in division 2.
Wednesday, Dec. 19, Plutaluang - Stableford
Our first visit here for three months due to reports of the
condition of the courses on the four nines and we selected the West and
North, our favourites and probably the best test of golf here.
There were 37 out today with the cut at 9-16, 17-20 and 21 + in the three
divisions. Everyone enjoyed this choice today and the thought for the next
round here is to play North and South, a different combination.
The Scottish boy, Dennis Scougall recorded the best score of the day,
playing off 16 and winning Division 1 with 39 points. Jerry Sweetnam was
second with 37 points and Marty Rock took third on 35.
Andy Oz topped Division 3, beating Roar Berger on a 16/14 back nine count
back after they both came in with 35 points, and at last Countback Burnie
beat his playing companion Willy van Heetvelde on a 15/14 count back to come
in on the winners list after they both shot 34’s today.
Mauri Friman was the winner in Division 2 with 35 points ahead of Nick Pad
in second two points behind and Howard Stanley was third with 32.
Near pin awards were won by Mike Chatt, Lindsay Phillips, Marty Rock, David
Stewart, Terry Hopkins, Rod Howett, Erkki Pohja and Howard Stanley.
David Stewart took the rollover ‘2’s pot from Pattaya Country Club with a
birdie on the 6th on the North course in Division 1 and Terry Hopkins
birdied the 8th on the West course for the only claim in division 2.
Friday, Dec. 21, Eastern Star - Stableford
Another very hot day for this time of the year where normally the
wind has changed by now from coming off the coast to a cool breeze blowing
from the East. There were still three divisions out today with the cut at
7-14, 15-18 and 19 plus and with the course still improving and the fairways
in a very good condition surprisingly the best score of the day came in
Division 1 with Chris Voller winning with 35 points. Wilf Latham took second
six points behind after beating Ted Gardner on a 16/14 back nine count back.
Walter Weber topped Division 3 with 34 points, Rod Howett was second on 32
and Iain Walsh placed third with 28.
Back from Switzerland, Volker Suhr with 33 points won division 2 ahead of
Ian Plummer one point behind and Jerry Sweetnam was third with a meager 31.
Keeping it in the family, Verana Suhr won the ladies division, beating Jill
Howard and Herma Fitzgerald. They are all looking forward for a re match
soon.
Near pins today went to Alan Hansen, Tony Kay, Marty Rock, David Stewart,
Bob Poole and Walter Weber.
Frank Kelly and David Stewart birdied the 3rd in Division 1 to share the
three rollovers in this league and with no winners in division 2 there are
three pots rolled over to next Friday here.
There are 22 teams already signed up for the two-person scramble here on New
Year’s Eve and there are still a few places open.

Tennis star Mikhail Youzhny visits Royal Cliff’s Fitz Club

Mikhail Youzhny interacts
with a young Fitz Club member giving her valuable tennis tips.
On Thursday December 13th 2012 the Fitz
Club- Racquets, Health & Fitness Centre of the Royal Cliff Hotels Group held
a free Tennis Masters Class prominently featuring professional Russian
tennis player Dr. Mikhail Youzhny.
Noted for his consistency and all-court play style, Youzhny happily agreed
to the 1 hour session to the delight of many young, avid players and tennis
fans alike. Participants and fans included Royal Cliff guests, Fitz Club
members, as well as tennis-lovers from the Pattaya, and Eastern Seaboard
region.
The participation was lively with many tennis and Youzhny fans seated in the
stands for this memorable and intimate showcase of raw talent. There were
many who were anxious to play with the star, and got their chance as they
queued up; even the little ones patiently waited for their turn! Round after
round Dr. Youzhny enthusiastically engaged all the players, gave tips on
their style and was energetic throughout the productive session.
Youzhny’s career-high singles ranking is World No. 8, achieved on 28 January
2008 and again on 18 October 2010. He is one of the few active players to
have reached the quarter-finals or better in all 4 Grand Slam tournaments.
In December 2011, Youzhny graduated from the University of Moscow with a PhD
in Philosophy. He began studying for the degree in 2005, and specialized in
the philosophy and attitudes of tennis.
