A hot week for Jay Burns

PSC golf from The Golf Club

Ken Aihara, Mika Manninen, Ed Banbaker and Jay Burns.

Steve Ellison
Monday, Nov. 12, Green Valley (White tees) – Stableford
1st Phil Smedley (12) 42pts
2nd Jay Burns (1) 39pts
2nd Brad Sproxton (13) 39pts
2nd Martin Zimmerman (15) 39pts
Another big turnout for our Monday fixture of Green Valley took us through the wind and rain of Pattaya to a damp but playable course. What’s the deal with this rain? This is not supposed to happen in November, honestly. It is the most rain I have seen in 12 years and it’s high time someone did something about it.
Fortunately, the courses here drain well so play can resume fairly quickly. Phil Smedley was glad that it did as his scorecard revealed a chart topping 42 points, one of his best rounds of the year. Smedders was 3 points clear of a trio of runner ups, namely Jay Burns, Brad Sproxton and Martin Zimmerman, all fine golfers to beat and all shooting 39 points. Dare I say it? Zimmerman was in the frame once again. The “Deadly Smedley” got away with another great win for our Golf Captain extraordinaire, well played mate!
Wednesday, Nov. 14, Pattana A & C (White tees) – Stableford.
1st Jay Burns (1) 36pts
1st Ed Banbaker (13) 36pts
3rd Ken Aihara (5) 33pts
4th Mika Manninen (5) 32pts
This is probably the most improved course of 2012 and every time we play here there are more converts to the charms of Pattana. There are 27 holes here that offer a fair test of golf in some beautiful countryside. The clubhouse facilities are absolutely the best that the Pattaya area has to offer, and it is a sprawling sports complex is one of the best in Thailand. Yes, it’s a bit out of the way, but well worth the extra time and effort once you are here.
The course was in very good condition, but to be honest the greens on the A side were not cut quite the same as the C greens, which were slower. Maybe we were playing in between the cut cycle but it took some getting used to.
On to the golf, Jay Burns hit the headlines one more time before he set off back to Atlanta, Georgia and finished on a high note indeed. Jay is a steady player and off a 1 handicap, his points are made the old fashioned way- he earns them. Jay shared the win with Ed who also shot his handicap at 36 Stableford points with a couple of 5 handicappers bringing up the rear.
Our Japanese buddy Ken Aihara was on the podium yet again with 33 points and newbie Mika Manninen from Finland rounded off the top scorers with a 32 on the card. It was nice to see such an international stable of great golfers join us at The Golf Club, and thanks to all who participated.
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro and the group usually plays golf on Monday, Wednesday and Friday so come join us for a seriously fun day out. McIntosh holds on for win

The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

The Pattaya Golf Society visited Bangpra on Monday, 12th November to play a stableford competition on the course which was very well presented and with greens a little slower than expected, which were a result of heavy overnight rain but downhill putts were still the a trip on the “highway to hell”.
The large field was divided into two flights at sixteen and under and in the second flight Brian Shaw and Dave Wilkinson shared second place with 29 points each. Dave’s wife Margaret came good with 30 points, finding the fairways regularly and making sure of the for the putts for the flight win.
In the top flight Dave Edwards and Masa Takano shared second place with 34 points each whilst Neil McIntosh took three points on the final hole to snatch the win.
Dave Edwards scored a birdie ‘2’ on the eighth hole and Rabbi’s free beer draw was won by Mr Len, at last, and he took great delight in awarding the Booby Bevy to Jeff Hunt, playing his first competition after qualifying for a handicap last time out. He still needs a few more rounds under his belt yet.
Bangpra will continue to be a favourite as long as it maintains the quality of course condition that was seen this day.
Masa signs off with a win
On Wednesday, 15th November the Pattaya Golf Society visited Crystal Bay to play a stableford competition on the C and A nines in two flights, divided at fourteen and under. The course was in excellent condition and with its generally very golfer “friendly” design and a clear sky the day was set fair for some excellent golf.
In the second flight John Mason’s rediscovered zest for the game helped him score 34 points for third, his best result for many a long day. In second was Mr Len, his 36 points being the result of some accurate tee shots and a fine display of putting. The flight winner was Brian Shaw and he recorded 39 points to equal the best of the day.
In the top flight Yasuo Suzuki took third with 36 points, one behind Jesper Hansen’s 37 in second place. The winner was Masa Takano, playing his final round this trip and his best gross figures of 76 gave him 39 points. He also recorded the only birdie ‘2’ of the day, on C7, to help with his airport taxi fare later in the evening.
Dave Edwards won the free beer draw, the only thing which went right for him all day, and the Booby Bevy was held over until the next round as the obvious winner was still travelling back to the bar in Soi Buakhao when the award was made.
Crystal Bay continues to provide excellent value as a golf venue and more good days lie ahead there throughout the next few months.
Happy returns
for Murphy and Murray
The Pattaya Golf Society visited Greenwood on Friday, 16th November to play a stableford competition on the A and B nines. The course is not in its best condition at present with the remains of the early year scarring still evident on the greens, which were slow and on the A nine quite bobbly. The thick and damp Bermuda grass bordering the fairways was a problem as was the “thompsonesque” collar of uncut semi rough fronting each green. So prepare for low scoring lads!
Margaret Wilkinson maintained her consistent current form with 32 points, as did Wichai Tananusorn, setting the best gross score of the day, 83, but the honours went to Pat Murphy and Murray Edwards who finished the day with 33 points at the top of the leaderboard. Both were playing their first competition after returning from Australia.
There were no birdie twos and the Booby Bevy went to Khun Wichai after he was caught testing the post match snacks in Rabbi’s kitchen, claiming as he did that he was running a quality control exercise.
The free beer draw was won by Jeff Hunt and the “apres-golf” discussion focussed on how to play a course like Greenwood with its peculiarly necklaced greens in soft and uncut conditions. All answers will be treated with absolute confidentiality!

Beckett blitz at Phoenix

Travellers Rest Golf Group

Andy Rich
Thunderstorms and more thunderstorms made life very testing for the patrons of the TRGG this past week, and dodging the lightening and the downpours certainly kept everybody on their toes.

Tewin ‘Poopay’ Lamthong - top performing lady and second at Phoenix.

I also learnt an interesting lesson this week by watching a fellow competitor and thoroughly decent guy named Geoff Beckett. Now Geoff would be the first to admit that he will never be god’s gift to golf, he is a high handicapper and I could write a novel on the things he was doing wrong in his golf swing. On Tuesday of last week he was having a torrid time hacking his way round a very damp Greenwood but on Thursday with a little positive thinking he amassed an amazing 43 pts playing at Phoenix to win the competition with shots to spare. So no matter how badly you play one day, just put it behind you, think positive and do a Beckett.
Monday 12th November saw the TRGG head off to play Khao Kheow and I am pleased to report that all that “ground under repair” of a few weeks back has disappeared and the course is looking good again. Still a very testing course as the scores reflected. Mike Rushant (12) continued his good form of the previous week and took the honours with 35 pts. Magnus Alvares (14) finished second on 32 pts and Jim Cleaver (12) came in third on 29 pts.
As previously mentioned, on Tuesday 13th November we headed off to Greenwood where the wet weather had taken its toll. The fairways were lush with virtually no run and the normally exceptional greens are taking their time to recover from a good winter dressing.
Ed Brubaker (13) however found the course no trouble at all and shot an excellent 40 pts to take first place. Magnus Alvares (14) finished second two days in a row with 37 pts and Masa Takana (7) was third on 35 pts.
Thursday 14th November at Phoenix (Lake and Ocean courses) was Beckett day. Geoff (30) took the course apart with 43 pts, whilst the best ladies performance of the week went to Tewin Poopay Lamthong (11) who came in second on 39 pts. Ross Bunce (12) was third on 37 pts.
On Saturday 17th November TRGG headed off to Crystal Bay (C and A courses) our regular Saturday venue. Ed Brubaker (11) despite being docked a shot off his handicap after his efforts at Greenwood still managed to stay ahead of the rest of the field by shooting 38 pts to win the competition. Mike Lam (21) rode into second with 37 pts and Paul Stanton (14) cantered into third place with 36 pts.

Max on the mark at PSC’s 120th Monthly Tournament

Report by Nigel Cannon/ photos by William Macey
It was a perfect day for the 111 competitors (3 no show’s!) who played in this month’s tournament at Crystal Bay on Friday, Nov. 16 – it wasn’t too hot and the sun was hidden by some light cloud. The course was in fine condition as the leading scores demonstrated, unfortunately the same cannot be said of the clubhouse which is in need of some urgent refurbishment.

Low gross winner Max Scott (right) with Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham.

Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham and Social Chairman Nigel Cannon were at the course early to prepare for the registration. Clearly this course is not used to running major competitions and it took some firm negotiations by Joe to ensure that the competition ran smoothly, as there were a number of other groups scheduled to play. At times they had no caddies! Joe was at the drink stop between the two starts to ensure there were no infiltrators to our competition.
Joe and Nigel handled the registration and both the leading groups were away on time with rounds of about 4½ hours.

As the cards were handed in it was clear that there were going to be a number of good scores in all flights.
Low Gross winner was Max Scott (3) who had a great round of 73 gross.
Mark Wood (10) took ‘A’ Flight with a net 66.
‘B’ Flight winner Gerry Cooney (17) had the best of the day with 45 points.
Frans Olgers (21) won ‘C’ Flight with 44 points.
It was a 3-way count back to determine ‘D’ Flight with Mick O’Connor (24), Ivan Plunkett (23) and Don Camody (23) each having 41 points, with Mick declared the winner on the best back 9.
There were 9 ladies today and in top spot was Wendy Bernek (34) with 38 points, with regular Noi Emmerson (15) runner-up with 37.

A Flight winner Mark Wood.

The presentation and reception this month was at Dicey Riley’s who put on a fine buffet and some special drink prices. After all were satisfied it was time for the winners to be announced. Nigel reminded members that tickets for the PSC Christmas Party were now on sale at the PSC Clubhouse, and then introduced Joe Mooneyham who expressed his appreciation to all participants today and said free tickets were still available for the professional tournament in early December at Amata Springs. Nigel then took back the microphone to announce the winners – all who were present.
The lucky draw followed with many going home with a ‘little extra’. Joe then announced the 50/50 winner which was a delighted and happy Jack Robertson.
The next PSC monthly tournament is on Friday 14th December at Mountain Shadow – sign-up sheets are in the clubhouse.

Ladies winner Wendy Bernek (left) with Peter Blackburn.

C Flight winner Frans Olgers (left) with the Golf Chairman.

B Flight winner Gerry Cooney.

Brackett bows out with back-to-back wins

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Wednesday podium placers: Paul Bourke (left), Jim Peachey and Greg Hill.

Monday, Nov. 12, Burapha - Stableford
Not surprisingly, our field here at Burapha to play the A and B courses was reduced somewhat to 24 players, as the weather looked decidedly dicey with heavy rain overnight and thunderstorms and rain in Pattaya before leaving for Burapha.
We were greeted by overcast skies and some light rain prior to tee off but the day just got better with no rain after the first hole and just overcast skies which made great weather for golf. The marshalls had decided that no carts were allowed on the fairways so we had ‘lift, clean and place’ through the green but the course was in great condition and none of the fairways showed any damage and were hard underfoot and had been cut making them perfect to play off. Only the bunkers were wet and unfortunately the balls tended to plug but that’s the rub of the green. The greens were in great condition and were a great pace and consistent throughout.
Two divisions plus the ‘2’s and the overall winner for the day, and winner of Division 1 was Bernie Stafford with 39 points off his 14 handicap. Bernie is becoming a Burapha specialist as he also won the division the previous week and it’s great to see him continue his good form. Other good scores went to Keith Allen (Div A runner-up) with 36 points off his 14 handicap; Greg Hill also had 36 points off his 16 handicap and was the winner in Division 2 from Paul Pedelty with 35 points.
Only three ‘2’s and they went to Keith Allen on A3, Paul Pedelty on A6 and Shane Crane (birthday boy) on B3.
Div A (0-14)
1st Bernie Stafford (14) 39pts
2nd Keith Allen (14) 36pts
3rd John O’Keefe (14) 33pts
Div B (15+)
1st Greg Hill (16) 36pts
2nd Paul Pedelty (15) 35pts
3rd Ivan Plunkett (23) 32pts
Tuesday, Nov. 13, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
Well, our third visit here since the refurbished back nine opened and it is with some regret that the Outback will be discontinuing their visits to this course. The local members no longer wish to play on Tuesdays, preferring the three day strategy of Mon, Weds & Fridays and we (the Outback) do not consider the course in good enough condition to take tourists to, particularly at the green fees PCC think they can charge. The future of the course is also unclear with rumours about that they may have to close the whole course at the beginning of next low season; we shall see but keep our options open.
In the meantime, Khao Kheow has been moved to Tuesday to take Pattaya C.C.’s place.
The win today went to Seesa (Mam) with a fine 37pts off a 28 h’cap with the Turnip in second with 35; third place was filled by John Kittilsen beating both David & Geoff on count back, all on 33.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day came from Chad, who had an absolute shocker for 19pts but he bagged the only ‘2’!
1st Phompinmon Seesa (28) 37pts
2nd Dennis Persson (19) 35pts
3rd Jon Kittilsen (19) 33pts
Wednesday, Nov. 14, Siam Plantation A & B - Stableford
11 Players for Siam Plantation but with such an early start it was understandable and some got caught in traffic on the way and had to hit off later. It was a great day for golf with no rain, a light breeze and overcast conditions. The course was again in superb condition and we again got to play Sugar Cane first followed by Tapioca, great layout and a good test of golf.
Only one division plus the ‘2’s and Jim Brackett showed a liking for the course with a great score of 38 points off his 6 handicap, with Stephen Mann having 37 points off his 8 handicap and Peter LeNoury taking third place with 35 points off his 11 handicap.
Only one ‘2’ and that went to Stephen Mann on the Tapioca 7th.
1st Jim Brackett (6) 38pts
2nd Stephen Mann (8) 37pts
3rd Peter LeNoury (11) 35pts
Wednesday, Nov. 14, Pattana C & A - Stableford
An excellent turnout of 21 golfers showed up today to play at Pattana; a few less than expected though as we lost three guys who ended up at Greenwood. We teed-off 20 minutes early and once again we had the course to ourselves until the last few holes on A.
The course has improved immensely since we last played here in October and at the very reasonable green fee rate together with a 100 baht discount for 20 players makes this a good alternative Wednesday once a month, as staff are pleasant and the facilities are excellent.
Welcome to Derek Stephenson and also to Mod who we haven’t seen for a very long time and well played to Bourkie for his fine 39pts off the shorter yellow tees; maybe the whites next time! Jim Peachey at long last found himself on the podium with 36 and they took the first and second places of Div A respectively.
Div B went to Greg Hill with 38pts, which follows his good round at Burapha on Monday; second in this Div was Barry Copestake on 37.
Sadly we say good bye to Stuart Tinkler & Ken Davidson and mates and we look forward to seeing you all next time, safe journey back.
There were five ‘2’s from Jim Peachey & Barry Copestake (hole C2), Derek Stephenson (hole C7), Ken Davidson on hole C12 and Greg Hill on hole 17.
Div A (0-15)
1st Paul Bourke (10) 39pts
2nd Jim Peachey (12) 36pts
3rd Derek Stephenson (13) 34pts
Div B (16+)
1st Greg Hill (16) 38pts
2nd Barry Copestake (16) 37pts
3rd Chris Thompson (24) 36pts
Friday, Nov. 16, Green Valley – Stableford
41 players went to Green Valley for our Friday competition on an overcast, cool day with a light breeze, just a great day for golf. Thanks to Suzi, all players managed to get off the tee on time and all groups were finished in just over 4 hours, which was very good but the pace of play was stop/start especially on the back nine.
The course continues to improve and was very heavily booked which just goes to show how popular this course is becoming; but some of the greens need a little bit of TLC but overall the course was in good condition.
Just a couple of additional points from Suzi; we did have a ‘no show’ today which does make life difficult for the organisers, so please try to let us know as early as possible if you can’t make it and secondly there was a case of somebody hitting up on the group in front, so two things: a) please don’t do it and b) all the caddies in your group are banned from working for one day if you do.
So to the scores - some good ones from players in all divisions and in Div A if you didn’t break par then you weren’t in the winners’ circle. Jim Brackett, who returned to the States the next day, finished on a high with another win today (38pts) to follow his Weds win at Plantation, so well done Jim and have a good flight back. In second place was Ian Heddle, who found his form at last with a fine 37 playing off 5 to beat Peter LeNoury on count back.
In Div B, the honours went to one of the Irish contingent, Liam O’Keefe (38pts) beating Murray Hart (35) and four guys all on 33pts, headed by Pete Stonebridge; and Div C was a good result for playing partners Clint & Chris as they shared the top two spots both with 39pts, with Clint getting the nod.
There were three ‘2’s from Capt’ Steve (4th), Suzi Lawton & Murray Hart (both on the 9th).

Testing tracks this week

PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside

Tuesday, Nov. 13, Wangjuntr - Stableford
Tuesday was a longer drive than usual as we made our way north east to Wangjuntr, with the Valley course to be our test today. The course was in good shape and under hot sunny skies with a light breeze blowing, it made for good golf conditions.
We played from the second from the back, Blue tees, which provided an all round test, with a good combination of longish and some positional tee shots required. Leading the way home was Jeff Wylie (6) with 33 points, just ahead of Owen Walkley (10) on 32.

Bruce was a near pin prize winner at Pattana.

With 5 near pins on offer today it was Willem Lasonder who was the star of the show with 2, both of which he converted for birdie, recording 2 for 4 points both times. Owen, Jeff and Graham picked up the others.
Thursday, Nov. 15, Pattana - Stableford
Pattana was Thursday’s venue with the B & C loop our allotted test for the day. Clear skies again seem to be the norm, which is a welcome relief after several weeks being disrupted by rain and wet courses.
Thirty-three points was the best anyone from our group could manage, with Jeff again leading the way from Owen, who today could only manage 30 points.
Near pins went to Bruce and Jeff, although Bruce was in line for 2 prizes until Jeff edged him on C2.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday, with ML hosting prompt presentations on both days. As a PSC affiliated venue we welcome all golfers, including seniors who have opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Kae ‘Aces’ the seventh at Emerald

PSC Golf from The Growling Swan

Michael Catillon, Kae (Hole in One) & Brendan Byrne.

Peter Blackburn
Monday, Nov. 12, The Emerald – Stableford
The rain was coming down steadily after a huge downpour at 5.00 am and I was anxiously looking upwards hoping that things would improve and by the time I arrived at The Growling Swan the rain had almost stopped. I was expecting my phone to be running hot with either cancellations or “are we still going” but only one of the 24 starters rang to check the situation and to their credit everyone showed up as keen as ever and with much faith in the fickle Pattaya weather.
We welcomed back Rita Zoebelli, Jerry Dobbs from Queensland, Australia and Peter Bye back for some more R & R from his work at the North West Shelf off Western Australia.
We departed the GS a couple of minutes ahead of our scheduled 8.30 am departure, arriving at the course just after a few van loads of golfers from another golfing outlet. The weather was fine by now but it was obvious there had been some heavy rain falling shortly before our arrival and we arrived at the first tee to find 6 groups waiting to tee off ahead of us. There was nothing we could do but wait as three previous groups had to wait for the heavy rain to stop and we finally got our first four-ball away 25 minutes behind schedule at 10.25 am.

Sandy Leiper, Max Bracegirdle, Scott Leszcynski & Don Richardson.

At least it was fine and not too hot with the golf course looking good, although obviously quite wet under foot at times but as carts were not allowed on the fairways winter rules through the greens were allowed.
The areas in front of some of the greens are recovering very well and the greens were generally in fine condition and at times very quick, which is more than can be said for the 6 groups ahead of us. We crawled around the front nine in two hours and twenty minutes and the pace did not improve throughout the round which was completed in four hours and forty five minutes, our longest round of golf for a long time but at least we played and never saw a drop of rain.
We were able to have 2 grades with five podium spots in each. A Grade was for handicaps 0 to 20 & B Grade for 21 and over. We had nearest the pins on all the par threes and longest first putts on 9 and 18 which were collectively sponsored by The Growling Swan, Lindsay Fry, Peter Bye, Sandy Leiper, Mozart Bronze and one golfer who wished to remain anonymous. Many thanks to these golfers for their generosity.
The highlight of the day was a hole in one on the seventh by Duangjai “Kae” Tusagad who has been playing with us for quite some time with her partner Roy “Plums” Dayton and everyone was delighted with her success.
The winner of A Grade with 39 points was Michael Catillon, 1 point ahead of the colorful Bjarne Kjaer in second place. Lindsay Fry came third with 36 points and Mike Allidi was fourth with 35 points, 1 ahead of yours truly in fifth spot.
Having his first win with us was Brendan “Casper” Byrne who won the B Grade section with a fine 38 points from Roy “Plums” Dayton in second place with 37 points. A count back was required to determine third & fourth and it was Sandy “Leiperfrog” Leiper (20 point back nine) just beating Max “Two Corsets” Bracegirdle (17 point back nine) with both finishing with 34 points. There were 3 golfers on 31 points all vying for fifth spot and it was Rita Zoebelli (17 point back nine) who rounded off the podium from Jerry Dobbs (16 point back nine) and Kae (13 point back nine).

2nd Bjarne Kjaer (19) 38pts

Near Pins: 5th – Michael Catillon, 7th – Kae (Hole in One), 13th – Rita Zoebelli, 15th – Alain Taddei
Long Putts: 9th – Stu Rifkin, 18th – Kevin Dinan
The Growling Swan NAGA Award (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score on the day) was won by Wendy Bernek and she accepted the award in fine spirit.
Back at The Growling Swan afterwards Kae insisted on ringing the bell as part of her hole in one celebration and her partner Roy was in agreeance even though he ended up paying for it, of course. It was impossible to remove the smile from Kae’s face for the best part of an hour and she still had it as she climbed on the back of Roy’s motor bike when they departed. This was our first hole in one at Growling Swan Golf and after his first golf lesson earlier in the day, mine host Peter Grey declared that he would be the second – we will see my friend!
Thursday, Nov. 15, Mountain Shadow – Stableford
It was a beautiful, sunny Pattaya morning as we assembled at The Growling Swan in readiness for the trip to the popular Mountain Shadow Golf Course. We had our best ever field of 33 golfers which included several returnees and a couple of newcomers plus two groups of infamous “Growling Swan Delinquents”.
We welcomed back Irishman Don Richardson, Tony “Spaggoni” Olcorn from Brisbane, Australia, Paul “Muncha” Moloney from his drilling job in Ghana, Kevin Waycott after a couple of weeks in Geraldton, Western Australia, Kevin Grosse from Melbourne & Wes Rado from Perth, Australia. It was also time to farewell Ron Gillettt who is returning to Melbourne on the weekend. Also a very special congratulations to Jim Bell who became Daddy to a baby boy a couple of weeks ago.
We had 3 mini vans booked which were “chocka block” and we departed the GS five minutes earlier than scheduled at 8.25 am and took the Highway 3 route for a change which got us to the course 45 minutes later. The course was fairly quiet and we only had to wait for one group to tee off before we were able to send our first group away, a three ball at 9.45 am which was 15 minutes ahead of our booked tee time.
With 9 groups we were expecting a slow day but this was not to be the case as things moved along at a very good pace. The weather was fantastic and the golf course was in superb condition with no sign of water on the fairways although the dams & lakes were very full. The greens were back to their slick best and I for one fell into the trap several times of being above the hole which resulted in the inevitable three putts. This golf course is in the best condition we have seen it in for many a year and it is a credit to the Greenkeeper and his staff.
As mentioned earlier we moved along at a cracking pace and completed the front nine in a tad over two hours. It became hotter during the back nine but a quick drink stop before the thirteenth tee revived us and we managed to complete the full round in just over four hours. It was a very enjoyable round of golf with great company at a first class venue.
We were able to have 3 grades with five podium spots in each. A Grade was for handicaps 0 to 16, B Grade for 17 to 28 & C Grade for 29 and over. We had nearest the pins on all the par threes and longest first putts on 9 and 18 which were collectively sponsored by The Growling Swan, Sportscene, Ken Bernek, Jerry Dobbs, Tony Olcorn & Paul Moloney. Many thanks to these golfers for their generosity.
The winner of A Grade with an excellent 41 points was veteran Don Richardson with one of his playing partners Mike “Hunter” Gosden 3 points further back in second place. In third place came J J Harney with 34 points, 1 point ahead of Lindsay Fry in fourth spot & Jim Bell fifth on 32 points.
Max “Two Corsets” Bracegirdle had the best score on the day and won the B Grade with 42 points, 7 points clear of Graham “Grunter” Buckingham in second place with Tom “TC” Cotton third on 32 points. Fourth place went to Brendan “Casper” Byrne with 31 points and Roy “Plums” Dayton finished fifth with 29 points.
Sandy “Leiperfrog” Leiper had his first ever win and finished on top of the C Grade with 34 points, 2 points in front of Fred Dineley in second spot. In a count back on 30 points for third & fourth spots it was Tony “Spaggoni” Olcorn (18 point back nine) just edging out Kae (14 point back nine) who finished fourth and Paul “Muncha” Moloney rounded off the podium in fifth place with 26 points.

Peter Newham gets his maiden win

IPGC golf from The Haven

Monday, Nov. 12, Greenwood A & B - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Peter Newham (19) 37pts
2nd Peter Skinner (10) 35pts
3rd Phil Groves (7) 33pts
4th Shuichi Kodaka (14) 33pts
5th Yasuo Suzuki (12) 33pts
Now we are well on the way into the high season when the courses are normally starting to get a bit crowded it is strange to find that many are still struggling to find a good number of golfers, even at well maintained 27 hole ones such as Greenwood where the competition of the day was set over the slightly easier A and B nines. It all made for a very good day on the fairways and a speedy round with everyone back in the clubhouse within 4 and half hours.

Peter Newham.

Peter Newham claimed his maiden victory out of The Haven with a solid one under handicap round that started out well but spluttered over the last four on the front and then came back with a bang on the inward half, which he completed in three under handicap for 21 points which was enough to seal the win with a couple to spare.
Peter Skinner took the first of his two second places, sadly nowadays for a mere pittance and insufficient to lay out on a dinner for two, with a solid round which might have been the winning one without an unusual blob on a par five on the 519 yard 7th when a wayward drive was never seen again and the second effort followed suit.
Phil Groves slipped into third place after returning a card that contained too may single pointers and unusually no three-pointers, but managed to win the count back with Shuichi Kodaka in fourth and Yasuo Suzuki in fifth after closing with 17 on the back nine as the chasing pair could muster just 16 with Shuichi winning out with a better 1 3to 12 on the last six.
There were no ‘2’s in the first division but Peter Newham made it a double celebration with the only one in the second division.
Before the presentations were made there was a welcome for new member Hugh McCurrach and also welcome backs for Frank Hughes, Danny Greer and Phillip Cass.

Wednesday, Nov. 14, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Mike Hill (23) 36pts
2nd Peter Skinner (10) 35pts
3rd Phil Groves (7) 34pts
4th Victor Moshonkin (11) 32pts
5th Ole Stamnes (27) 32pts
Many groups have decided to give Pattaya Country Club a miss at the moment, after the management had closed the back nine for redesign and serious renovation during the low season for almost seven months, claiming it is not yet ready for play. However, following the recent IPGC Medal when the scores were quite reasonable (with the scoring over the front and back nines being almost equally good and just a few complaints to be heard regarding the speed of the greens on the back nine) it was decided to continue with the bookings previously made. This was in support of the efforts made by the management to improve the course and in the knowledge that with some judicious local rules regarding ‘lift and place’ from GUR areas a good day’s golf could be had at a reasonable price.

Mike Hill

In the event the day’s returns again showed that the scoring over the back nine was no worse than the front with an equal number of players having their best nine on the front and the back.
Mike Hill is having a very nice run of form, winning regularly without many spectacular scores, and his win this day was again a level par round that proved to be good enough after an even eighteen points on both nines.
Peter Skinner took his second runners up placing in the week again with a one over handicap round but this time including two blobs, one surprisingly on the relatively easy par three 5th hole, but once again it proved to be just sufficient to consign Phil Groves down into third spot also for the second occasion in the week.
Returnee Victor Moshonkin slid into fourth place after winning a count back with Ole Stamnes over the last six holes, scoring a better 13 to 12 after they had tied the back nine on 18 apiece.
There were no 2’s in either division.
Prior to the presentations there were welcome backs for John Mabry and Victor Moshonkin.

Friday, Nov. 16, Phoenix Lakes & Ocean (White tees) – Stableford
CSS 71
1st Paul Taylor (19) 38pts
2nd Mike Hill (23) 37pts
3rd Seppo Sadeharju (24) 37pts
4th Peter Skinner (10) 37pts
5th Stuart Thompson (10) 36pts
6th Bob Lamond (5) 35pts
Paul Taylor is slowly returning to his pre-injury form and continued to progress downwards with his handicap after winning by the slimmest of margins ahead of a three-way count back for second place. His day had started slowly with just eleven points from the first seven holes but the round then took off as he then amassed 26 points from the next ten holes only to drop back at the last taking a double on the Ocean par 5 last. But it was just enough to see him home with his second best round over the last three years.

Paul Taylor.

Mike Hill continued to make headway by winning that count back for second place with a stunning four under back nine that pushed Seppo Sadeharju down into third as he also came back in three under handicap after a steady opening nine.
Peter Skinner took his third podium win following his best return of the week but a weak second nine following a one over gross outward half, when he included a couple of doubles for zero points, consigned him to his worst finishing spot.
It was good to see Stuart Thompson, back from OZ on a flying visit, and Bob Lamond, back from the northern territories of Thailand, both playing and getting themselves a mention once again in Pattaya golf with their fifth and sixth places respectively. We all look forward to their next visits.
Stuart Thompson and Peter Skinner shared the 2’s rollover pool in the first division whilst Phillip Cass went over the top to grab the rollover pool with two in the second division.
Back at The Haven before the prizes were presented there was a welcome for new member Jan Deenoi and also welcome backs for Benny Hansen, Dick Heaney, Stephen Lewis, Bob Lamond and Stuart Thompson.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.15 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Paul the ‘Thunder from Down Under’

PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society

Sunday, Nov. 11, Green Valley - Monthly Medal
A Flight
1st Paul Hack (11) net 67
2nd Kevin McEntee (8) net 71
3rd Jim Bell (15) net 72
4th Pierre Bietry (12) net 72 pts
B Flight
1st Bob McFadden (16) net 69
2nd Colm Mullen (16) net 69
3rd Keith McLachlan (25) net 71
4th Colin Davis (17) net 72
Red Flight
1st Sim Davis net 74
Near Pins: No 4 Andy Bardill, No 9 Nigel Bennett, No 12 Justin Fowlis, No 16 Yui Bietry.
It was a good day for Paul Hack as he etched his name on the 2012 Lewiinski’s wall of shame with a monthly medal and A Flight winning gross78 net 67. One can only muse over how resplendent are resident ‘sartorial wonder’ will be when he suits up for the year-end Gold Medal competition - it could make Skippy blush.

Paul Hack (right) with Golf Manager Colin Davis.

Paul’s fine effort held off one of the Bert’s poppy day winners, Kevin ‘you know who’, and relegated him to the A Flight Silver. Jimmy ‘Ak47’ Bell used a count back to edge Pierre ‘the magician’ Bietry for the bronze, leaving Pierre to pick up the lead, with a little help.
Bob McFadden’s net 69 took the top step in B Flight as he out pointed Colm the ‘Right Honorable’ Mullen. That duet was but two points clear of the B Flight Bronze medalist Keith McLachlan and a further stroke clear of Colin ‘the Donkey’ as he carted off the lead.
Sim, the Donkey’s better half, took the laurels in the Red Flight with a net 74. Paul’s better half Mercy accepted Sims prize as she was feeling a bit under the weather. As all our readers know, the result qualifies Sim to join Paul in the year end Gold Medal competition.
Please spare a thought if you will for Peter Henshaw’s brother Eddy who fell and broke his arm on arrival last year to the Land of Smiles. Just to show it was no fluke on the first day back this month he slipped and broke his leg. Eddy now holds the distinction to have made two visits to play golf in Thailand and never lost a ball.
Monday, Nov. 12, Greenwood A&B - Stableford
A Flight
1st Matt Doyle (13) 40pts
2nd Justin Fowlis (13) 40pts
3rd Jim Bell (15) 38pts
B Flight
1st Mitch Squire (19) 38pts
2nd Barry Copestake (17) 37pts
3rd Colm Mullen (16) 36pts
He was mentioned last week and the week before, along with his two sidekicks. Here he is again. I give you Mr. Matt ‘Dillon’ Doyle. Previously known as the 13 handicapper who knew more about the game than any mid or high handicapper in town, he is now known as the man of the match. And that via a 40 point count back victory over the very unlucky Justin Fowlis. Jim ‘AK 47’ Bell fired a very impressive 38 points to close the flight.
Mitch Squire upheld the honor in B Flight with a equally impressive 38 points which placed him one stroke clear of Barry ‘the boot’ Copestake. Colm ‘no nu please’ Mullen served notice he might be finding his form with a count back over ‘the Donkey’ for third.
Justin Fowlis and Bob Fagin split the 2’s pot.

Mercy (left) accepts Sim’s prize from Colin.

Wednesday, Nov. 14, Bangpra - Stableford
A Flight
1st Peter Hynard (13) 37pts
2nd Patrick Kelly (+3) 37pts
3rd J-P Maffray (13) 37pts
B Flight
1st Matt Cronin (14) 38pts
2nd Jimmy Day (17) 38pts
3rd Tore Eliassen (14) 35pts
C Flight
1st Joseph Tynan (30) 37pts
2nd Christy Knight (21) 35pts
3rd Keith McLachlan (25) 34pts
Matt Cronin held off the challenge for the man of the match and top spot in B Flight from Jimmy ‘good’ Day as Matt’s 38pts counted up better on the inward nine. Tore Eliassen did likewise to Colm ‘the count back specialist’ Mullen as he filled the flight, leaving Colm to watch the presentation from his favourite bar stool.
Peter Hynard locked up with the trio of Patrick ‘plus -3’ Kelly and J-P Maffray all with 37 points; Peter took the top spot as Patrick and J-P drifted, climbing the podium steps in that order. The scribe made his golf debut after a prolonged absence and had the pleasure to be in the same four-ball alongside J-P. The exercise was welcomed and some of the French words learnt from J-P would I imagine be unprintable.
Skipping down to C Flight we saw Joe ‘sat nav’ Tynan continue his good play which he attributes to his softer balls. Christy ‘good’ Knight, who is never far away when good pal Jimmy is in the frame, took the silver two shots adrift. Another count back was needed to sort out the final spot in the flight as Keith McLachlan demoted Mitch Squire to the presentation crowd. The amazing thing was that Keith played the first three holes on the outer nine without scoring a point and a further two no-scoring holes on the inner nine.
Patrick Kelly, J-P Maffray, Jimmy Day, Tore Eliassen and Michael Goggin split the 2’s pot.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Tinkler & Hakozaki sparkle at Crystal Bay

PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch

Monday, Nov. 12, Crystal Bay C & A – Medal
Following heavy rainfall in Pattaya for most of the previous day, the sky was still heavy with persistent rain on Monday morning, so the prospects for a round of golf did not look good. Somewhat surprisingly, we had a full complement of golfers who turned up at The Ranch, and we set off for Sri Racha with some optimism and more than a little trepidation. However, once again the weather gods were shining on us, and we arrived at Crystal Bay under a clear sky and were amazed to find there had been no rain on the course.

The John Preddy Trophy - waiting for a new name to be added on November 23.

The decision was made that we didn’t need to play “pick, clean and place”, and the seven groups teed off on schedule. The round progressed smoothly without any holdups and the fairways were in good shape, although the greens were a little slow and not up to their usual high standard.
We welcomed back teaching pro Keith Smithson, and with a higher than usual contingent of low handicap golfers, the cut was set at 13 and under. There were two fantastic scores from Takeshi Hakozaki (net 64) and Stuart Tinkler (net 63) to win the A and B flights respectively and seven players in total played under their handicap, which is surely testament to the condition of the course.
A special mention is due for Thomas Nyborg, who was making his tenth appearance with the Bunker Boys, and scored his first ever sub-hundred round, thereby earning his first podium appearance in the B Flight. Most golfers (well the younger ones anyway) will remember the satisfaction of breaking 100 for the first time, so well done Thomas.
A Flight
1st Takeshi Hakozaki (11) net 64
2nd Tony Scambler (10) net 70
3rd Keith Smithson (2) net 70
B Flight
1st Stuart Tinkler (17) net 63
2nd Gordon Melia (17) net 69
3rd Thomas Nyborg (26) net 71
Near Pins: Keith Hemmings, Colin Jones, Takeshi and Paul Smith.
Wednesday, Nov. 14, Phoenix Lake & Ocean – Stableford
We had a good turnout today for our visit to this popular local course, which at the moment offers reasonable value for money for larger groups, and is in great condition.
The day started brightly and progressed well until the leading groups started the inward nine, and a large black cloud rolled in with accompanying thunder and lightning. The rain held us up for around 45 minutes and two groups of fair weather golfers decided to call it day once the greens and fairways became submerged. The remaining six groups sat out the storm and eventually were able to complete their rounds in soggy, but playable conditions.
The cut today was again set at 13 and the scores were respectable in both flights despite the difficult conditions. William Macey carded the best score of the day beating Geoff Hart on a count back to win the B Flight.
There was fun and games back at The Ranch when Buff and Geoff tried to sort out the soggy score cards, some of which were unrecognizable and almost totally unreadable, but eventually everything was sorted out and the winners relaxed and enjoyed the spoils of their labours.
A Flight
1st Tony Scambler (10) 38pts
2nd Chris Cox (9) 36pts
3rd Keith Norman (11) 35pts
B Flight
1st William Macey (19) 39pts
2nd Geoff Hart (22) 39pts
3rd Neil Hurst (13) 35pts
Near Pins: Keith Smithson, Geoff Cox, Geoff Hart and William Macey.
Friday, Nov. 16, Green Valley – Stableford
Another full complement of golfers today as eight groups set off to Green Valley in fine weather. We had to turn away two unlucky golfers when our efforts to secure an additional tee time were unsuccessful, a timely reminder to all that in high season it’s wise to register early.
The course appeared busy but we teed off on schedule and the round progressed smoothly with most groups finishing in around four hours. The greens were not at their best and were a little slow, but generally the course is in great condition.
The star performer on the day was Geoff Hart carding his second consecutive round under his handicap with a magnificent 44 points to easily win the B Flight. Neil Hurst continued his recent run of good form to win the honours in the A Flight with an impressive 40 points. Both winners will no doubt be keenly anticipating at a cut in their handicaps when the new list is issued at the weekend.
Thomas Nyborg (still a relative newcomer to the game) also had another great day, recording his best ever score to date in Pattaya.
A Flight
1st Neil Hurst (13) 40pts
2nd Eddie Graham (10) 37pts
3rd Paul Smith (5) 37pts
B Flight
1st Geoff Hart (22) 44pts
2nd Thomas Nyborg (26) 40pts
3rd Gary Leigh (17) 33pts
Near Pins: Derek Stephenson, Gary Leigh, Tony Robbins and Paul Smith.
Note: The Bunker Boys is a PSC affiliated golf society which now plays out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new players are always welcome. Contact Buff on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663 for all enquiries. You can find all the news, schedules and results on our website at www.bunkersociety.com.
The annual John Preddy Charity Golf Tournament will be held on Friday 23rd November 2012, at Mountain Shadow G.C. The response has been great and the start sheet is now full, so a great day is anticipated by everyone.

High season starts with a whimper

IPGC golf from The Links

Tuesday, November 13, Pattana – Stableford
With the High Season supposedly now upon us, The Links is back to having regular fixtures, but with Green Valley on Sunday being washed out by a truly torrential storm after 14 holes, it was off to Pattana on Tuesday for the first completed fixture of the season, with the B and C courses our challenge for the day.
Expecting the course to be soft with no roll after the downpours of the previous two days, we decided to play off the shorter yellow tees, but after teeing off on the tough starting hole on the B course, it was apparent that there was not even a need for preferred lies on the fairways, which were pristine and bone dry on the whole. Indeed, the B course especially must be just about the best around at the moment, for general condition and pace of the greens, with the C course a little less conditioned, and the greens a little slower.
The scoring was generally good around the shortened course, with the round of the day going to Jon Batty, bettering his handicap for the first time in 5 months, carding a gross 77, mainly due to some outrageous scrambling around the greens. Second place went to Frank McGowan, who nowadays is never far from a podium finish, with 37 points including an excellent 21 on the back 9, with Joe McArdle a further point back in third.
The ‘2’s pot was shared by Ben Durham and Jon Batty.
1st Jon Batty (10) 41pts
2nd Frank McGowan (17) 37pts
3rd Joe McArdle (14) 36pts
4th Martin Kelly (12) 34pts
Thursday,
November 15, Mountain Shadow – Stableford
As a precursor for the PAGS tournament later in the month, we decided to visit Mountain Shadow today, a rare fixture in our calendar for some reason, but a true test of golf off the blue tees.
The course is generally in good condition, except for numerous bare patches just off the fairways, every one of which I seemed to find, but the greens are currently running a little slower than in previous years.
As usual around this tough golf course, points were hard to come by, and none of the field could match their handicap. Andy Galvin, recently returned from Ireland for the high season, took the spoils with a creditable 34 points, one ahead of Peter Skinner and Frank McGowan, with Peter taking second place by virtue of an 18–15 count back.
The ‘2’s were shared by Joe McArdle and Ben Durham.
1st Andy Galvin (18) 34pts
2nd Peter Skinner (10) 33pts
3rd Frank McGowan (18) 33pts
Note: The Links depart from the hotel on Soi Buakhao at 10.30am on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 9.45am for Green Valley every Sunday. Sign up at the hotel or contact Jon on 080 021 1034. A full schedule of courses can be found on the IPGC website.

Mashi & Graham win numbers game

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Mashi Kaneta, Graham Buckingham and Steve Compton with one of Bert’s ‘finest’.

Derek Brook
Tuesday, November 13, Treasure Hill – Stableford
It seems good things are happening at this golf course, and it seems that every time we go there new trees have been planted - usually in places we put our ball. However, we have started to use it a little more and went on this day despite the fact that rumours said there was a lot of G.U.R on the course.
So it was into the cars and off. I went with Mashi, and realised as we went down Sukhumwit something was not quite correct. So having realised we were not going to Crystal Bay, we went a Mashi way to Treasure Hills. It really is nice to see the countryside, however we were not the last to arrive.
Onto the first tee, and I realised we had 7 groups, so away we went fast, as the course was nice and quiet. And it was as expected, with G.U.R. on practically every hole, but it is growing in and was playable in places. The ground was a bit soft but carts were allowed on the fairways, mind a fair bit of mud was on the balls. The greens were a bit hairy and as usual fast downhill and slow up. We did however move along quite well, until finally we were in the changing room and into the showers. Here we learnt how ‘Lobster Thermidor’ is made, as contrary to the normal where we only get cold water, we only got hot. Never seen so many red golfers!
The restaurant here is usually quite good, but I suppose a restaurant is only as good as the cook you have in on the day.
Back at Bert’s it was soon into the presentation. In the A Flight, 0 to 20, we had a three-way count back on 34 points that saw Mashi Kaneta win and the scribe, Derek Brook, in second, with Bob Watson in third. Bob has not been well of late, but all watch out once he is firing on all cylinders, the sparks will fly.
In the B Flight we also had a count back for the winner on 36 points that saw Graham Buckingham win with Steve Compton in second. A count back for third on 33 points saw Tom Cotton in third and Barry Oats just losing out. As we tend to do it was then time to put the world to rights. So we did. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Barry Oats, Mike Gaussa, John Hackett, Mike O’Brien
Long Putt: Joel Flor, Brian Gabe.

Taylor’s triumph

Phoenix Members Golf Society

Tuesday’s winners pose with the staff at The Relax Bar.

Mike Gerrard
Tuesday (our main day), 13th November, started out on Lake/Ocean course with some reservations and fears of more storms and rain. The day before had been horrendous with tales of courses in the area being waterlogged.
However Buddha smiled on us today and although there was a little cloud cover the rain stayed away. With carts confined to paths only it was a sign of the amount of rain the course had soaked up. And soak it up is what Phoenix does.
We implemented ‘clean and place’ rules for the fairways but in all honesty this course drains so well there was very little problem with loose impediments on your balls.
Today was sponsored by KPK Food Services Ltd. and Paul Taylor returned the best score to claim first place and the KPK voucher with a steady 36 points. Bill Hewitt had the same score but with a slightly poorer back nine to claim second place. In third place was Mukesh Thakker with 35 points and in fourth was Peter Harris with 34 points.
Near pins went to Kevin Bird, Richard Baldwin, Granville Swanton and Hugh Byrne.
The lucky draw prizes, as always sponsored by our hosts The Relax Bar at Ban Amphur, were awarded to any non winners on the day and they were Art O’Conner, Jim Neilson and John (I never win the lucky draw) Bartley.
On Friday, November 16 we played the Lake/Ocean course again and the practice of Tuesday seemed to have assisted in better scoring today. Peter Rawling came in all cock a hoop with a superb 42 points. This was long overdue after a few weeks of struggling, however his joy was soon dampened a little when it was announced yours truly (Mike Gerrard) had scored a miraculous 43 points (gross 77). This was the best gross score I had ever scored in Thailand, but it has to said there were a lot of long and outrageous putts sunk today. Strangely enough two easy putts were missed. Never mind, every dog has his day as they say.
In third place was Richard Baldwin on 37 points (usually enough to win) and in fourth place with the same points total was Kevin Bird.
Near pins today went to Richard Baldwin (2), Peter Rawling & Gary Strickleton.
Lucky draw (sponsored by The Relax Bar) went to Joris Goetschalkx (again), Peter Harris, Peter Wathall & Tom Parry.
You possibly know that I am the first to criticise bad courses and believe me, we had it bad at Phoenix about a year ago. However, I have to report to all that Phoenix Golf Course is now possibly the best course in this area. Not only are the views and interest stunning, the manicure is now superb, the greens are a good speed and perfectly true and the drainage in these times of heavy storms is second to none.
Guests who join our group can enjoy a discounted green fee of 1.000 Baht plus caddy as a guest of the members, should you wish to come along. However, you must have an official handicap of no more than 28. Beginners and non proficient players would not fit in with this group.
Note: We also organise fortnightly sea fishing trips, so if anyone is interested please call me (Mike) on 087 091 7565 for more information.

Pattaya City FC’s bad luck continues

Bangkok Casuals League 2012 Season

Paul Frain
Pattaya City lost to last season’s champions 3-1 last month and in their next match they were leading local rivals Planet 3-2 when the rains appeared after 60 minutes and the match was then abandoned due to a water logged pitch. The following cup match in Bangkok also ended with a 1-0 defeat, so City were looking for a win as they traveled to Bangkok last weekend to play Bangkok FC.
The visitors received a shock at the start of the game when in the second minute a Bangkok forward, who was stood in an offside position, received the ball in space and with no whistle from the referee he made no mistake to make it 1-0 to the hosts.
City hit back, bringing a good save from the Bangkok keeper with a dipping shot by Dipta. The same player made life difficult for the home defence with his trickery and brought another two good saves from the Bangkok goalkeeper but it was the Bangkok team that nearly went further ahead when a long clearance downfield took a fluke bounce past the City keeper, who then somehow managed to scramble back to punch the ball from the goal line and out to safety.
City hit back with good attacking football and brought two good saves by the Bangkok keeper and also hit the bar with a rasping shot by Rakotonirina but the home team held out until the half time break.
City pressed again in the second half but the final killer ball was missing from their play and Bangkok broke in a rare attack, only to see their forward’s shot hit the City post. Bangkok then gained a free kick just outside the City penalty area which resulted in the ball going into the top corner to make it 2-0.
The game was becoming scrappy but City’s Dipta had a shot that hit the bar after a smart four man move. The pressure was telling on the Bangkok defence and City were rewarded a free kick and the shot from Rakstonirina again hit the Bangkok woodwork and the same player brought two great saves from the home team keeper.
In one final push to get City on the score sheet, Dipta made a dazzling run down the right and his centre found the diving Tshuma but his header went just wide and the final score remained Bangkok 2, Pattaya City 0.

Friman tops the week with 40

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Monday, Nov. 12, Bangpakong – Stableford
There are a few people who moan regarding the distance to this course but after today’s round, with the condition of the course, the facilities here and the cost, we have a another booking in the third week of January, so that tells a story.

Mikael Andersson – winner at Eastern Star.

There was one no show Monday morning, no names mentioned, and a few cancellations over the phone but the mini buses left on time, and as we drove up the 7 there was intermittent rain all the way, which caused a few dubious faces to appear in the group. Upon arrival it was overcast and the six groups teed off but there were no problem weatherwise for the rest of the round.
There were a few ‘umms and arrs’ on the first as to which tee to play off but at almost 6,700 yards we went off the white tees and everyone enjoyed the round and the conditions.
The cut today was 6-17 in division 1 and there were three 38’s on the podium; a 24/21/17 back nine count back saw Don Head, now in retirement, take the win with Mike Combs second and Kri Arnio in third place.
There was a 38 also in division 2 with Fred Temminick beating Jim Connelly by two points and in third place Jeff Van Uffelen beat Andres van Der Laan on a 17/16 count back.
Near pins went to Paul Butler, Curtis Hessler, Lindsay Phillips, Kari Aarnio, Jim Connelly, Paavo and Fred Temminck.
There were no ‘2’s in division 1 but the large rollover in the second flight was shared by Jim Connelly, Don Head and Fred Temminck.
Wednesday, Nov. 14, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford
We are working up to the high season now and with over 32 players out today we had three divisions out with the equal cut at 7-15, 16-20 and 21 plus in division 3.
Mauri Friman returned the best score of the day in division 2 with 40 points. William Chang was second three points behind and Colin James beat his Scottish mate Dennis Scougall 15/13 to take third place after they both came in with 32 points.
Sid Crawley topped division 1 with 35 points while Mike Combs, playing off 13, was second on 34 and Chris Voller placed third with 32.
Jef Van Uffelen was the winner in division 3 with 35 points, Rod Howett came second one point behind and Andres van Der Laan was third with 33.
There were a few comments regarding the condition overall of the 18 holes and the majority will return here in four weeks time.
Near pins today were claimed by Mike Combs, Wilf Latham, Linndsay Phillips, Dennis Scougal, Roar Berger, Gordon Everingham, Rod Howett and Countback Burnie.
Mike Combs and Dennis Scougal were smiling after they split the rollover ‘2’s pot in division 1 while Rod Howett also had a ‘2’ in the second flight.
Friday, Nov. 16, Eastern Star - Stableford
On the way to the course the skyline in the background looked threatening and with spasmodic rain in the area over the past three days we were not sure what to expect today. We had even more players than Wednesday and ten groups out with almost a similar cut - 8-14, 15-20 and 21 plus.
In form at the moment, the Swedish boy Mikael Andersson won division 1 with 37 points while Mike Missler was second after beating Pete Sumner on a 16/15 back nine count back, both returning scores of 32.
The Canadian bandit Zorro, a.k.a. Paul Chabot, returned without the black mask and won division 3 with 34 points and Iain Walsh was second, beating Joe Kubon 13/11 on the back nine after they both came in with scores of 28.
Paul Hartley was the winner in division 2 with 33 points, Jerry Sweetnam took second on 32 and in third place with 31 was Cully Monks. Most people responded at the presentation, “who is Cully Monks?”
Near pins were claimed by Ben Durham, Karl Flood, Jerry Sweetnam, Jim Connelly and Joe Kubon (2).
There was a tough pin placing on the 13th today but Jerry Sweetnam birdied it to scoop the division 1 prize in the ‘2’s and in the second division, with a rollover from the previous Friday, Jim Connelly birdied the 3rd and went away a happy chappy!

Windsurfing stars set to rejoin Phuket regatta

The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta is to reintroduce windsurfing as one of its competitive classes this year, representing an exciting ‘roots’ style rebirth of an early component of the classic race. The newly announced Windsurfing Class is held in cooperation with the Windsurfing Association of Thailand (WATH), with races taking place over four days from 2 to 5 December 2012.
In the early years of the Phuket King’s Cup, the Regatta included a broad range of watercraft, yet over time it has developed into the foremost big boat race in Asia. In 2009, the organisers reintroduced dinghy sailing to the event, and last year saw kitesurfing added to a diversified competitive roster.
About 14 sailors from the Thai national team will join the windsurfing competition, including Ek Boonsawad, and Siriporn ‘Dao’ Kaewduanggam. Ek recently represented Thailand at the 2012 London Olympics, while Dao won the 2010 Youth Olympics in Singapore. There will also be six Thai sailors from the Royal Thai Navy Base in Satthip joining the event, in addition to 20 sailors from abroad.
WATH President and Pattaya Mayor, Ittipol Kunplume, said, “The Windsurfing Association of Thailand is very pleased to see our sport form part of such a prestigious regatta. It is great for the sport of windsurfing in Thailand, a country in which it enjoys strong levels of participation from Thai nationals, and also from visiting guests; there are a lot of tourists and visitors who take advantage of Phuket’s superb sea conditions for getting to grips with this enjoyable and challenging sport.”
Kevin Whitcraft, President of the Phuket King’s Cup Organising Committee, said, “We’re pleased to welcome a new generation of windsurfing competitors to the 2012 Regatta. This is an exciting and fun addition to the ‘classes of 2012’, and so sits well with the thrilling spectacle of big boat racing during the 26th Phuket King’s Cup. Phuket could be considered something of an ultimate location for the sport for both professional competitors and also for novices wishing to explore a high-energy water sport.”
The 2012 Phuket King’s Cup Windsurfing Championships will gather top competitors from across the region, with racers using Starboard 2013 Phantom Race 295 windsurfing boards provided by Starboard, ensuring a parity of equipment for close racing. Quicksilver Thailand joins as a sponsor, providing accommodation for sailors, and Amara Watersports Thailand also provides sponsorship support. Thai windsurfers are expected to perform well in the competition due to the sport’s popularity in the country, and given Thailand’s exceptional international reputation in the sport.
The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta itself will run from 1 to 8 December, 2012, and will host the largest and most competitive fleet of any regional regatta, with the top competitors from around the region and beyond, plus cruising sailors from around the world, taking part.

The inaugural Ocean Marina Yacht Club and the Ocean Property Company Boat Show, is about to cross the starting line, to use a nautical expression. At the splendid and expansive Ocean Marina facilities at Najomtien, some 10km from Pattaya, this huge boating extravaganza will be held from Friday, 23 until Sunday, 25 November, 2012 on location at the marina.
With much support from the burgeoning Pattaya-Jomtien property and real estate sectors, yacht racing, cruising and water sports in general are undergoing an exponential surge along the east coast. Thus, the Ocean Marina Boat Show, the first of its kind ever held on Thailand’s Eastern Seaboard, will feature three days of a marine life-style, a display of yachting and cruising excellence and a show-case of the most sophisticated equipment, aimed at promoting access to the beautiful coast-lines to everybody.
Veteran Gulf sailor and the driving force behind marine developments in the area, William Gasson considers the Boat Show as a logical step in furthering the interest of the population in ALL marine activities. It is, in fact, an annex to his own most successful annual event, the Top of the Gulf Regatta, held each April-May, also at the Ocean Marina.
Entry to the Boat Show is free and open to one and all, to come by and see the displays of yachts, power boats, luxury cars, fishing accessories, wind-surfing and scuba diving hardware, to mention a few of the exhibits.
Throughout the vast water-front expanse of the ocean Marina, there will also be food fairs, beer gardens and a myriad of fun activities for all the family, including a dragon boat race and ongoing product demonstrations.
According to the leading maritime journal, Sea Yachting, “There will be over 60 exhibitors on the marina foreshore, as well over 20 water-borne craft”.
For any so inclined, there will be test models available of such craft as kayaks and catamarans and even an opportunity to “climb aboard” a charter cruise during the evenings of the event.
All manner of marine accessories, including outboard engines, marine electronics, safety and buoyancy aids and every type of equipment required to be sea-borne, will be on sale from the exhibitors.
Come one; come all to the Ocean Marina, for a few days of family fun. And it is FREE!

School coaches, athletes watch Bangkok FIFA training broadcast in Pattaya

Warunya Thongrod
School coaches, athletes and trainers gathered at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya to watch experts from the International Federation of Association Football speak on how to prevent football and sport injuries.
The Nov. 4 FIFA 11+ Warm-Up Program workshop, broadcast to Bangkok Hospital facilities across the kingdom from Bangkok, featured Dr. Mario Bizzini of FIFA’s Medical Assessment & Research Centre.
The workshop, held in conjunction with the Football Association of Thailand, consisted of two sessions. The first featured a lecture on the causes, treatment and prevention of football-related injuries, and the principles and techniques behind the FIFA 11+ warm-up program. During the second, participants put the techniques into practice.
FIFA 11+ is a complete warm-up routine to prevent injuries. It combines exercises and training to provide general protection from injuries. Recommended for athletes 14 and older, the warm-up should be performed before any training session, according to FIFA.
In Pattaya Capt. Paisal Jathrapithak, director of Bangkok Hospital Pattaya’ special activities program, said the broadcast was a good opportunity to introduce the warm-up techniques to area athletes and footballers.
