Pattaya Sports Club Fishing Report
Dene, Jeff, Sollie, Ray and
Daeng with some of the catch from a bountiful day at sea.
Capt. Dene
Six of us set out from Khram Marine
on Saturday 20th October at around 07:15 as Adrian was a “no show”. What a
mistake he made! It was, without doubt, the best trip since I took over
organizing the fishing 2½ years ago. The weather was superb with mirror like
waters (2 trips straight), beautiful blue skies and a very light breeze to
keep us cool. And, best of all, the fish cooperated and we were kept busy
all day.
Twelve sweetlip cod were caught, 4 by Daeng, 3 each Jeff & me, with 1 each
by Solly and Ray, all in the 2–3 kilo range. Several yellow tail and grouper
more than 1 kilo each were also landed. Unfortunately Charlie missed out on
the cod but nevertheless had a good haul of pla-dang, grouper, yellow tail
and sundry others. Daeng was champion again for the day and with Solly took
home an estimated 25–30 kilos, the biggest bag catch I can recall. I was a
close second with around 18 kilos and everyone else was more than satisfied.
Trips this month have been well attended which has provided sufficient funds
for 8 discounts of baht 500 to regular attendees (5 or more trips).
Scheduled trips for November are 3, 8, 17 and 22 and bookings are coming in
quickly. Tel 081 862 6279 if you are interested but don’t delay.

Dayton wins his first Growling Swan Monthly Mug
PSC golf from The Growling Swan
Roy Dayton, Peter Grey, Brad
Todd & Stuart Rifkin.
Monday, Oct. 22, The Emerald –
Stableford
After one “no-show” we settled for a field of 18
golfers and assembled at The Growling Swan in preparation for the trip to
the Emerald Golf Club. There had been several recent negative reports
regarding the condition of this golf course and some had vowed to give it a
miss for a while but we decided to find out for ourselves as it is popular
with our members.
We welcomed back Sandy “leaperfrog” Leiper after his short trip back to
Scotland and also first timers Jan Piet Andersen & Thor Olsen, formerly of
Norway but now residing in Pattaya.
The skies were clear and another fine day was anticipated as we left the GS
right on time at 8.30 am. The journey was a touch slower than normal & we
arrived at the course 50 minutes later to find it practically deserted. This
enabled us to tee off at our leisure and our first group, a three-ball got
away 15 minutes ahead of schedule. Carts were allowed on the fairways at a
90 degree angle but as there had been rain overnight & conditions appeared a
bit wet winter rules through the greens were allowed.
It was quite hot with blue skies above and as we proceeded we were all
remarking on what the fuss had been about as the golf course was completely
playable with several areas of G.U.R on the approaches to some of the greens
but not posing any real problems for those who are truly dedicated to and
enjoy the game of golf.
We were held up on the front nine by a
very slow non Thai four-ball which resulted in a time of two hours and
fifteen minutes but after a talking to by the course Marshall they shot away
on the back nine although as it was becoming very hot we found it necessary
to take a couple of drink breaks. We finished our full round in four hours
and thirty minutes and it must be said that we found the golf course in
quite good shape considering their problems with recent rain and the greens
were firm and true & at times fairly slick. We will most certainly be back
next month!
We were able to have 2 grades with three podium spots in each. A Grade was
for handicaps 0 to 18 and B Grade for 19 and over. We had nearest the pins
on all the par threes which were sponsored by Graham Buckingham, Brad Todd,
Mozart Bronze & The Growling Swan. There were also rewards for longest first
putts on the 9th & 18 greens which were kindly sponsored by the guys from
Mandurah Country Club. Many thanks to these golfers for their generosity.
Mike Allidi, Allan Tranaeker &
Brad Todd.
Two handicapper Mike Allidi certainly had
no trouble with the golf course as he carded a gross 69 with 15 pars & 3
birdies to give him 41 stableford points and a clear winner in the A grade.
In second spot came Eddie Townsend with a fine 38 points and the colorful
Walter Baechli finished third with 36 points.
Once more it was Brad “Toddy Junior” Todd who won the B grade with a solid
34 points, 3 points ahead of Graham “Grunter” Buckingham in second place and
veteran Kevin Dinan third with 29 points.
A Flight (0-18)
1st Mike Allidi (2) 41pts
2nd Eddie Townsend (18) 38pts
3rd Walter Baechli (18) 36pts
B Flight (19+)
1st Brad Todd (19) 34pts
2nd Graham Buckingham (24) 31pts
3rd Kevin Dinan (26) 29pts
Near Pins: 5th – Mike Allidi; 7th – Graham Buckingham; 13th – Bjarne
Kjaer; 15th – Brad Todd
Long Putts: 9th – Walter Baechli; 18th – Bjarne Kjaer
The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score
on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was well won on
this occasion by Allan “parrot” Tranaeker and as is usual for him he
accepted the award in fine spirit. Then it was back to The Growling Swan for
the usual post mortems of what could have been on the golf course earlier.
Lots of fun and “Mickey taking” of course and a great way to finish a good
day.
Thursday, Oct. 25, Burapha, A & B – Stroke/Monthly
Mug
There were a few last minute inclusions for the fifth
Growling Swan Monthly Mug competition which swelled our numbers up to 29 and
this time the classy Burapha was chosen to host this monthly stroke event.
We gathered at The Growling Swan and even Stu “Heineken” arrived very early
along with others who were looking forward to the challenge on this
beautiful Pattaya morning.
We welcomed Max “two corsets” Bracegirdle’s brother, Geoff from Perth,
Australia, and also Ernie Picking from Melbourne, Australia. Sadly it was
time to farewell Brad “young Toddy” Todd after several weeks of playing golf
here as he is returning to Perth on the weekend. It now gives others a
chance of winning in the future, perhaps the Growling Swan “delinquents” who
were joining us for the event. We also wished good luck to the colorful
Walter Baechli who will shortly be off on a cycling tour from Chiang Rai to
Udon Thani.
Three mini-vans were required this time & we headed off right on schedule at
8.30 am and after the short 32 minute ride arrived at Burapha where it was
very busy. This was to be our last visit here until probably next April as
the “high season” prices will commence next month so we were determined to
make the most of it.
After a leisurely half hour or so of putting & preparation we managed to tee
off 10 minutes ahead of our booked time of 10.05 am and in terrific weather
conditions our first four-ball proceeded at a fairly good pace although the
groups in front were certainly in no hurry.
The golf course was superb and in terrific shape and the few golfers that
were playing there for the first time were “blown away” by its scenery and
class. We managed to get round our first nine (A) in two hours & ten minutes
and about the same time for the second nine (B) which gave us a total time
of four hours & twenty minutes which, considering the traffic on the course
& the fact that we were playing a stroke round was quite acceptable. It had
been quite hot and humid but we were once again thankful of a rain free
round on this magnificent layout. Can’t wait for next April!
In addition to the Monthly Mug winner we were able to have 2 grades with
five podium spots in each. A Grade was for handicaps 0 to 18 and B Grade for
19 and over. We had nearest the pins on all the par threes and longest first
putts on the A9 & B9 greens which were collectively sponsored by The
Growling Swan, Walter Baechli, Brendan Byrne, Eddie Thompson, John Pierrel &
Lindsay Fry. Many thanks to these guys for their generosity.
One of our regular golfers, American Roy Dayton won his first Growling Swan
Monthly Mug with a very creditable net 67. A three-way count back was
necessary to determine the winner of the A grade and it was Stu “Heineken”
Rifkin (net 33 back nine) who came first from Walter Baechli (net 36 back
nine) in second place & yours truly (net 37 back nine) finished third, all
three having net 72. Another count back was needed for fourth & fifth spots
and with net 74 it was John Pierrel (net 36 back nine) who took out fourth
spot.
Working out who finished fifth was somewhat of a “marathon” as there were
two scores almost identical in all areas but after being unable to separate
them on the back nine it was Mike “Hunter” Gosden (net 25 on last 6 holes on
the front nine) who got the chocolates with Paul Hack (net 26 on last 6
holes on the front nine) just missing out.
Once more it was that Brad Todd who took the honours in B grade with a solid
net 71, just one better than Graham “Grunter” Buckingham in second place.
Yet another count back was necessary to determine third, fourth & fifth
places with three players on net 74. In third spot was Fred Dineley (net 34
back nine) with Bernie McCart fourth (net 36 back nine) and Kae (net 38 back
nine) rounded off the podium in fifth place.
Monthly Mug
1st Roy Dayton (23) net 67
A Flight (0-18)
1st Stu Rifkin (16) net 72
2nd Walter Baechli (18) net 72
3rd Peter Blackburn (11) net 72

Back at The Growling Swan for presentations we thanked Peter Grey for
sponsoring this very popular monthly event and also for providing the
delicious chicken supper which was devoured at a rapid rate as usual. Peter
Grey did not let us down although he was hoping “The Parrot” & “The
Reverend” would have disastrous rounds but in the end it was Peter who won
the N.A.G.A. (awarded to the golfer with the worst score on the day) and he
did it easily. Many of us stayed for quite a while enjoying the low priced,
very cold beers & great company and celebrated a very good day’s golf.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low & high
handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play Mondays
& Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker Bar) in Soi
Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at 8.30 am. For bookings or
more information please contact Peter on 0806 351 386 or email to

Freeman fires 68 off the stick
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Monday, Oct. 22, Crystal Bay B & A –
Stableford
We arrived at Crystal Bay under bright sunny skies, to find the
course was dry and in great condition. The greens were also in better shape
than those that we’ve played on in recent weeks, so everything was in place
for some good scoring.
Buff presents the
KPK voucher to Bernie Stevens following his win at Khao Kheow.
Alan Freeman duly produced a superb performance, shooting 68 off the stick
to deservedly win the honours on the day, with an impressive 43 points off
his handicap of 3. There was a close battle for second place with Lee Butler
edging out Geoff Cox on the count back.
1st Alan Freeman (3) 43pts
2nd Lee Butler (14) 38pts
3rd Geoff Cox (15) 38pts
Near Pins: Geoff Cox, Lee Butler and Lawrence Harding(2).
Wednesday, Oct. 24, Khao Kheow A & B – Stableford
Predictions that we’d reached the end of the rainy season, following
Monday’s beautiful day at Crystal Bay, turned out to be premature, although
the day started brightly for the front nine.
We had four groups today, and as the first group reached the 14th green the
rain closed in and a steady downpour ensued. The first two groups elected to
play on through the rain and the other two groups took shelter in the nearby
drinks station. The decision to play on proved to be the correct one, as the
downpour intensified with accompanying thunder and lightning, and the course
became wetter and wetter. The final two groups did manage to complete the
round, eventually reaching the clubhouse in a bedraggled state, and with
scores to match.
Bernie Stevens, playing his first game since returning from U.K. survived
the atrocious conditions better than anyone else, and his 22 points scored
on the front nine were enough to carry him through to victory. Alan Freeman,
playing his last game before returning to work in the U.K., came in third
place, and generously sponsored the first round of drinks back at The Ranch.
1st Bernie Stevens (17) 35pts
2nd Duncan Lee (15) 34pts
3rd Alan Freeman (2) 30pts
Near Pins: Reg Smart, Lee Butler, Duncan Lee, and Alan Freeman.
Friday, Oct. 26, Treasure Hill – Stableford
Only two groups made the trip to Treasure Hill following gloomy
reports on the condition of the course, which is currently undergoing yet
more extensive repair work.
The management have extended their promotion (990 Baht for green fee + caddy
+ buggy) until mid-November, and whilst this is a great deal, the
consequence is that all the buggies disappear with the early morning
golfers, and there are none available after 10.30am. As such we were forced
to wait almost an hour until the 2 buggies we needed for our four less
active senior citizens became available.
Approaching the green on the first hole, our worst fears were confirmed as
the approach resembled a major archeological dig with no visible signs of
grass within 20 yards of the green. There are large areas of GUR around most
holes, but perhaps the most disappointing part of the day was that the
greens on the inward nine had also been badly cored and sanded (some of the
greens resembling an oil exploration drilling site) making putting a
complete lottery. Not surprisingly the scores on the day were unspectacular,
but Neil Hurst took the top podium spot with a score of 33 points.
1st Neil Hurst (13) 33pts
2nd Lee Butler (14) 31pts
3rd Mike Johns (17) 30pts
With two games still to go, the October Golfer of the Month competition has
developed into a four horse race, with Geoff Parker leading the way by two
points ahead of Tony Robbins. Newcomer Neil Hurst and the ever inconsistent
Lee Butler are a further two points back, but a win for any of the
contenders will throw the race wide open.
The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who now play out of The
Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the fire station, and almost
opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three times per week on Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but
competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new
players are always welcome. Contact Buff on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663 for
all enquiries. You can find all the news, schedules and results on our
website at www.bunkersociety.com.
John Preddy Charity Golf Tournament
The annual John Preddy Charity Golf Tournament will be held on Friday 23rd
November 2012, at Mountain Shadow G.C. This year’s tournament has received
many new sponsors and all proceeds will be donated to the Anti-Human
Trafficking and Child Abuse Centre (A.T.T.C.) in Nongprue.
With the help of our new sponsors, there’ll be great trophies, prizes, food
and a lucky draw. We’re hoping that this year’s tournament will reunite many
old members of the Bunker Boys, and the team event will be particularly
keenly contested, including teams from different bars and societies from all
over Pattaya.
Entry Fee is 1,700 Baht per player. Contact Buff at the address above for
more details and registration.

Miller takes the plauditsat Phoenix
PSC golf from the Blue Moose Sports Bar
Wednesday’s top two – Matt
Miller (right) with Arnold Van DeGraaf.
Wednesday, Oct. 24, Phoenix -
Stableford
On Wednesday last week the Blue Moose golfers made the short trip
to Phoenix Golf Club where we played the Mountain and Lakes course. Even
with heavy rain the previous day the fairways were in good shape and the
carts were allowed onto the fairways. This was good since the weather was
very hot with little wind.
We led off on the Mountain and we breezed around the course. There was a
minor problem on the Lakes because the starter started additional golfers on
the back nine.
Rich Murphy rejoined the Moose golfers after returning from the States but
his score was not up to his usual standard. Matt Miller came in first on the
day with 37 points. In his normal position, Arnold Van DeGraaf came in
second with 35 points while Joe St.Laurent, still struggling, came in third
with 33 points.
While checking out scores, food and beverages were enjoyed at the Moose
Sports Bar & Grill.

Sloan ranger Chris doesn’t miss
PSC golf from The Golf Club
Rick Harris and Chris Sloan.
Steve Ellison
Monday, Oct. 22, Green Valley (White tees)
– Stableford
1st Ty Kerr (6) 40pts
2nd Geoff Doody (23) 37pts
3rd Jason Kerr (4) 36pts
3rd Michael Hastie (15) 36pts
I love this time of year when yer old mates are all starting to trickle back
to town, and just this week the trickle has turned into a flood. Dare I say
it? The rainy season is over and the high season is finally upon us. I hope
I don’t regret those words, but the numbers are well up, the soi has been
pretty dry and the signup sheets are full. Let the good times roll Pattaya,
the boys are back in town!
I played with Ty and Jason Kerr a couple of years back at Bonanza C.C. up in
Khao Yai. These young brothers are a couple of lovely lads any dad would be
proud of. One thing that struck me was the complete lack of fear they exuded
on some very intimidating golf shots. They both had this gutsy “let’s go for
it!” attitude as their main concern really, was the fun of beating each
other, just like me and my brother Brad used to do at the tender ages of 13
and 15. These guys are good and are only going to get even better, just wait
and see. Note: me and me bruv never played off 4 and 6!
Being out of school this week, the Kerr boys showed us old farts how it is
done and took a 1st and 3rd on the podium today at Green Valley. Regular
Geoff Doody was our best representative of the “Boys over 16’s” and had a
great day shooting his 37 points. Well played to you, sir.
TGC House resident Michael Hastie, returning from golf with his 36, has had
his long ponytail eyed by the new salon next door, so mind where you sit
mate. Michael will soon be joining the lifers here in Pattaya and makes the
big move into his new condo soon. Welcome to the club mate!
Wednesday, Oct. 24, Khao Kheow (White tees) –
Stableford
1st Chris Sloan (10) 40pts
2nd Rick Harris (11) 38pts
It has been far too long since we played this great course, but then that is
the dilemma we seem to have here in Pattaya … so many courses, so little
time. We had a dozen Pattaya newbies out with us today on this fine Pete Dye
track and they were all very impressed. To play a Dye course in his home
country of the USA would cost you at least 100 bucks for just the green fee.
For us to be able to play here for a third of that, and with a caddy, is
amazing. We often forget what a great mecca for golf this place is.
On to the comp, we had a full load of golfers for this outing and some great
weather to boot. The course was deemed to be in fine condition, as sometimes
it can get a bit heavy in the rough.
Visiting from Perth, ‘Downunda’, Chris Sloan took charge of the field with a
tremendous 40 points out there (yes, he has a legit handicap!) and took top
honours. Our softball-mad buddy Rick Harris also had a great day and was
just 2 shots behind on 38 which is a super score here at Khao Kheow as we
all know how difficult this layout can be. Funny how good cricketers, good
baseball/softball players and good hockey players are also good golfers, eh?
Just like Arthur Scargill, they know how to strike.
The boys of eternal summer take to their new diamond at the Thai Polo Club
every Sunday at high noon, so if you fancy a game of slow pitch softball,
just call Pattaya Sports Club Softball Chairman, John Stockton at 089 932
5433 for details. The field is great, super nice grass and a well groomed
flat field so no twisted ankles or dodgy bounces to handle at this posh
venue. And please don’t call it rounders.
Friday, Oct. 26, Greenwood (White tees) –
Stableford
1st John Pierrel (11) 37pts
2nd Mark Doolan (10) 36pts
3rd Phil Smedley (13) 32pts
John Pierrel is at it again, winning that is. You will usually see John’s
name here in this paper every week, and sometimes even his photo. That is
because this guy plays a lot of golf and when you play a lot of golf you get
consistent and you will usually be right up there and in the prizes and
having more fun because you are playing well. I would guess he plays at
least 4 days a week, and that is his “secret”. Sorry John, I had to spill
the beans.
Mark Doolan was right on his tail with a 36 and our Golf Captain Phil
Smedley was in the frame himself with an OK round of 32 points but hey,
never give up, sometimes 32 points are enough to bring home the bacon!
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We usually play on
Monday, Wednesday and Friday so come join us for a seriously fun day out.

‘The Boys’ are back in town
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
The Co. Offaly mob - Kevin,
Matt and Andy.
Sunday, Oct. 21, Green Valley -
Stableford
A Flight
1st Vic Hester (14) 40pts
2nd Chris Sloan (8) 37pts
3rd Paul Herring (12) 36pts
B Flight
1st Eddy Beilby (18) 35pts
2nd Dave Driscoll (16) 35pts
3rd Colm Mullen (16) 34pts
Near Pins: No 4 Pierre Bietry No 9 Yui Bietry No 9 Jim Brackett No 16
Chris Sloan.
The boys are back in town - Kevin McEntee, Matt Doyle and Andrew Byrne
together they are collectively known as the Co. Offaly gang. You will no
doubt read a lot more about them in the coming weeks.
This apart did nothing to put Victor ‘the inflictor’ Hester off his game as
he put a 40 point lashing on the field for the A Flight top spot and man of
the match. Vic was three strokes clear of Chris Sloan and yet another of the
man in form, Paul Herring.
It might have taken a bit of a technicality to sort out B Flight but it also
took 18 holes of quality golf as Eddy ‘the Eagle’ was found perched on the
top podium spot. The technicality involved Dave Driscoll who mistakenly hit
a shot from out of bounds not realizing his error, but regrettably the hole
was deemed a no counting hole for Dave, which led to a count back that went
in favour of the Eagle. Dave was an exceedingly good sport about it and the
organizers were most appreciative of that.
A second count back was needed to fill the flight involving newly arrived
Colm ‘the right Honorable’ Mullen and Claude ‘try a little’ Harder, the
scales tipping in Colm’s favour.
Chris Sloan, Yui Bietry and Francis Goyons shared a very healthy 2’s pot.
Monday, Oct. 22, Pattana B&C - Stableford
A Flight
1st Paul Herring (12) 36pts
2nd Matt Doyle (14) 33pts
B Flight
1st Peter Henshaw (21) 31pts
2nd Colm Mullen (16) 31pts
The inform Aussie Paul Herring continued his purple patch as Sunday’s third
place was followed by today’s first. Paul was the only player to match his
handicap and so took top spot in the senior flight. Paul was three strokes
clear of (here they come) Matt ‘Dillon’ Doyle, but it did need the aid of a
count back over the unlucky Francis Goyons.
B Flight turned out to be an all Irish affair as Peter ‘Don O’corleone’
Henshaw went head to head with Colm ‘the Right Honorable’ Mullen as both
were tied on 31 points. Peter emerged the victor in the resulting count
back. Big Frank McNamara kept an eye on proceedings as he came up a shot
shy.
Francis Goyons, Andrew C-O Byrne, Jim Bell, Rod Brown and Merle Humphreys
shared the 2’s pot.
Wednesday, Oct. 24, Crystal Bay - Stableford
A Flight
1st Mickel Lauren-Gonnet (16) 41pts
2nd Barry Copestake (16) 36pts
B Flight
1st Jimmy Day (18) 37pts
2nd Joe Tynan (29) 24pts
The one thing you can count on is that whenever Crystal Bay is the venue the
scores are going to be over par. The performance of the field was consistent
of that assumption that is if you don’t consider Mickel Laurent-Gonnet as
part of the field. Somebody forgot to tell Mickel that this is one of the
toughest tracks in the area with possible the exception of St Andrews.
Mickel’s 41 point outburst was five strokes clear of Barry ‘the Bionic man’
Copestake and yet one more ahead of Sundays hero Vic ‘the Inflictor’.
Actually B Flight had a better than par round competitor as the good captain
Jimmy Day led by example with 37 points. Two other Irishmen went head to
head for the Silver as Joe the ‘ever green’ Tynan was the recipient of a
count back over Ivan Plunkett.
The two flight winners split the 2’s pot.
You might be wondering what happened to the Co. Offaly gang, it appears they
can’t handle the wet weather as the whole gang walked in on the fourteenth
hole. But to be fair they weren’t on their own.
Friday, Oct. 26, Treasure Hill - Stableford
A Flight
1st Mickel Lauren-Gonnet (16) 41pts
2nd Matt Doyle (14) 35pts
3rd Francis Goyons (8) 35pts
B Flight
1st Alan Delaney (21) 38pts
2nd Mike Jeffreys (19) 37pts
3rd Peter Henshaw (21) 36pts
Mickel Lauren-Gonnet was an ecstatic A Flight winner as the Lewiinski’s
regular tallied a sparkling 41 points to put a fair sized dent in his 16
handicap. Co. Offaly gang member Matt ‘Dillon’ Doyle had the better of a
count back over Francis Goyons as both were locked on 35 points.
Alan Delaney topped out B Flight with a very creditable 38 points; Alan was
trailed in by Welshman Mike Jeffreys and Irishman Peter ‘Don O’corleone’
Henshaw in one stroke increments.
Kevin ‘O-G McEntee a brace, Francis Goyons, Mark Watson, Eddy Beilby and
Barbra Cooper shared the ‘2’s pot
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3
near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add
your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Outback golfers retain Thai Garden Cup
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Rosco & John, the backbone
of the Outback win against the German Swiss team on Friday.
Monday, Oct. 22, Burapha A & B - Stableford
At the start of what was potentially going to be a very busy week at
the Outback, 17 Outbackers travelled to Burapha today playing A & B off
the blue tees. It was nice to see that the course had dried out and we
had some run on the ball after all the rain we have had in the past few
months and carts were allowed on the fairway so no ‘lift, clean and
place’.
Unfortunately the scores don’t reflect the condition of the course and
maybe we should make life easier by playing off the white tees more
often. Thank you lads for all your help and cooperation, it is much
appreciated.
Bob Lindborg got it all right today with an excellent 37pts to win the
day from Chris Playforth on 35, with Paul Bourke taking third, four back
with 31; after the top three, nobody else broke 30pts.
There was just one ‘2’ from Chris Playforth.
1st Bob Lindborg (20) 37pts
2nd Chris Playforth (13) 35pts
3rd Paul Bourke (9) 31pts
Monday, Oct. 22, Khao Kheow C & A – Stableford
With Suzi looking after 17 players at Burapha, Capt’ Steve
away with a privileged concession to play Amata Springs, General Jack
took another 31 players to Khao Kheow to play the C & A nines. The
condition of the course was satisfactory with a lot of ongoing work but
it was much drier than expected and to be honest, many found the white
tees playing rather short.
As a result, there were some very good scores, not only from Bruce
Campbell (41pts) and Kim Stokes (40pts) who took the top two places in
Div B but also from Chris Sloan, who won Div A on 39. Chris was a little
disappointed having missed his birdie putt on his ninth hole (C9) for a
level par front nine, from which he never really recovered, playing the
back nine four over but nevertheless, it was a very good round of golf.
Welcome back to Greg Kennedy & Bruce Campbell, who have brought a couple
of mates along to play at the Outback for the first time, namely Dave
Hallard, Rory Connell, Wally Brown & Wayne Brooking and welcome back
also to Colin Faraday, who has not been seen for some time.
There were two ‘2’s from Kev Waycott & Rory Connell
Div A (0-14)
1st Chris Sloan (8) 39pts
2nd Neville Meyers (11) 38pts
3rd Kevin Waycott (8) 37pts
4th Paul Greenaway (7) 36pts
Div B (15+)
1st Bruce Campbell (20) 41pts
2nd Kim Stokes (15) 40pts
3rd Greg Kennedy (20) 38pts
4th Sugar Ray Handford (18) 37pts
Tuesday, Oct. 23, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
Thirteen players today on a well manicured nine holes. Don’t
know if it was for next week’s opening of the back nine, or for the
Holiday – but long may it last.
Welcome back to Eddie O’Neil and John Eyers here to get away from the
weather in the UK and welcome also to some form for Noy & Kurt, both of
whom scored 36pts for the day’s top scores, Noy getting the win on count
back.
No ‘2’s today so we go to five places.
1st Noy Kamsantia (18) 36pts
2nd Kurt Eric Persson (30) 36pts
3rd Campbell Potts (17) 34pts
4th Dennis Persson (17) 34pts
5th David Earthrowl (21) 30pts
The victorious Outback
team with the Thai Garden Cup.
Tuesday, Oct. 23, Burapha A & B –
Stableford
Today was Chulalongkorn Day, named after the much revered
King, and as such was a Thai National Holiday; a fact that had escaped
General Jack and there was no Sports Day at Laem Chabang, which had been
moved to Wednesday. So with a bit of last minute phoning around, our
thanks go to Burapha for getting us out of a hole and accommodating our
28 players, at an excellent rate.
It was a lovely day for golf, great breeze and sunny skies. The course
had dried out and like Monday, you got run on the fairways for the first
time in a long time; the greens were still receptive and great to putt
on, all in all a joy to play. Some players found the rough a little
brutal but hey, that’s the rub of the green.
White tees, to give our holiday makers an easier time, with two
divisions plus the ‘2’s and in Division 2 (15+) Brian King showed a
return to form with a great round of 43 points from Wayne Waywood with
38 points, while third place went to Greg Kennedy with 37 points who
beat Fidge Button on a count back.
Division 1 was won by Captain Steve with 38 points from Dave Hallard
with 37 points, with third place going to Neville Meyers on 36 points
and fourth place to Dave Garrood with 35, who beat Brendon Moylan on a
count back.
There were five ‘2’s from Dave Hallard, Kim Stokes, Geoff Bracegirdle &
Rory Connell got two.
Div A (0-14)
1st Steve Mann (9) 38pts
2nd Dave Hallard (12) 37pts
3rd Neville Meyers (11) 36pts
4th Dave Garrood (10) 35pts
Div B (15+)
1st Brian King (24) 43pts
2nd Wayne Waywood (15) 38pts
3rd Greg Kennedy (19) 37pts
4th Ian Button (15) 37pts
Wednesday, Oct. 24, Greenwood A & C – Stableford
A small select group of 8 golfers went to Greenwood for the
first time in a long time, amid conflicting reports as to the condition
the course was in. Playing the best two loops, A & C, it was in a
satisfactory state, although the greens were not as good as they have
been in the past.
Barry McIntosh won the day with 35pts from Paul Bourke & Dennis Pelly.
There was just one ‘2’ from Paul Greenaway.
1st Barry McIntosh (18) 35pts
2nd Paul Bourke (9) 33pts
3rd Dennis Pelly (9) 33pts
Wednesday, Oct. 24, Siam Plantation A & B – Stableford
Thirty seven players showed for our normal Wednesday
competition at Siam Plantation and it was great to see so many players
after a couple of disappointing turnouts. The day started out overcast
and then became clear and sunny and we finished with black clouds and
threatening thunderstorms but had little rain.
The course was in great condition and even though the greens had been
scarified they still played flat and true. Once again the starters got
us all off on time and we completed our rounds in a comfortable four and
half hours. Siam is just a pleasure to play with great staff and caddies
who make sure that you have a very enjoyable experience at a great golf
course.
Three divisions, with four places in each plus the ‘2’s and the scores
were very good considering the very stiff breeze that blew all day.
Division 3 was won by Mike Quill who showed a return to form after a
early night with 38 points from Anton Rowbottam with 35 points, while
third place went to Paul Kelly on 34 points and fourth was Don Everett
with 33.
Division 2 was topped by Rosco Langoulant who loves this course, with 38
points from three players all on 35 points; Fidge Button taking second,
third went to Bob Maloney and fourth went to Dave Hallard also on 12.
Division 1 had three players all tied up on 36pts; on count back the win
went to Kevin Waycott with David Garrood second and Stephen Mann third;
in fourth place was Rory Connell with 35.
There were five ‘2’s to Paul Kelly, Anton Rowbottam, Neville Meyers on
Tapioca 3, Kevin Waycott on Sugar Cane 3 and Stephen Mann on Sugar Cane
6.
Div A (0-11)
1st Kevin Waycott (10) 36pts
2nd Dave Garrod (10) 36pts
3rd Steve Mann (9) 36pts
Div B (12-15)
1st Rosco Langoulant (12) 38pts
2nd Ian Button (15) 35pts
3rd Bob Maloney (12) 35pts
Div C (16+)
1st Mike Quill (21) 38pts
2nd Aton Rowbottam (19) 35pts
3rd Paul Kelly (25) 34pts
PARASUB: Friday, Oct. 26, Green Valley – Stableford
Ten days ago, it looked as though the Outback would not have enough
players to play in the annual event against the German Swiss Golf Club,
the Thai Garden Resort Cup. This was to be the fifth year of the event
but the rainbow multiplier format was falling on stony ground as was the
tournament entry fee; a rapid rethink was required.
At a last minute emergency meeting the format was changed to a 2-man
better-ball event (stableford) and the entry fee reduced to 200 baht. In
less than one week, the number of entries went from about 15 to 39, and
the General couldn’t even pick himself to play.
So the event went ahead, with two teams of 15 per side (60 players) plus
two 3-man teams, although we’re not quite sure where their scores ended
up; and then behind that lot were two three balls, just out for a hit –
so all in all a massive total of 72 players.
In the evening we all headed off to the Moon River Pub for unlimited
booze and a great buffet, all for the price of 1,000 baht per player and
I can tell you, that many were perceived to have got good value on the
deal – a great night out. The resident Philippine band adds to the night
and the winning teams all received a 500 baht voucher, courtesy of the
Thai Garden Resort.
Regrettably, the scorecards were a bit of a mess making it virtually
impossible to fathom out the better-ball winners, so we eventually
scrapped the idea and just settled for the matchplay result, which went
once again to the Outback, winning 8 matches, halving 2 and losing 5.
For sure, next year’s format will be up for review, but the smart money
would be on just a straightforward matchplay event, with no entry fee.
The entry fee from this year’s event amounted to 12,000 baht, 2,400 of
which was spent on near pin prizes and a couple of extras; the balance
has been banked and will be used for some special prizes next year.

Oats in sparkling form at Crystal Bay
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Barry Oats and Paul Sharples
with one of ‘Bert’s finest’.
Derek Brook
Wednesday, Oct. 24, Royal Lakeside – Stableford
This is a good day out, leaving at 0815 and getting back after
1700 hrs. It is a fair drive down there, but generally the days of bad roads
are gone and we can now zip down there in about an hour. All in all it is a
reasonable drive and the results are to play on a course that we usually do
not.
Arriving there, the first thing you notice is the imposing clubhouse; and
the booking in is quick and efficient. The route to the first tee is direct
and we found we were off on time despite the fact that the course seemed to
be reasonably well booked up.
Despite the heavy rain around the area of late, we found that course was in
reasonable condition and that carts were allowed on the fairways. The
fairways were fairly dry with only the odd soggy area, and the rough was a
bit long, but after all, the rough is supposed to be nasty. Being there for
most of my round I can confirm that it was rough. The greens varied greatly,
from hard and fast to slow and green. Some were really hard, still if that
was the worst to be said then the course was very playable.
Round over it was into the very smart and up market changing room, makes you
feel comfortable, then into the restaurant where you realise why the
clubhouse is so palatial. Mind, to sit there with such a fine view is worth
a few baht. Then into cars and back to Pattaya. I remember surfacing a
couple of times and seeing the rain coming down and the traffic backed up,
but sitting in the back and ‘resting my eyes’, I felt refreshed on getting
back to Bert’s.
With a going away party for Reg and Dot coming up, we got into the results.
In the A Flight, 0 to 18, the winner was John Hackett with 40 points ahead
of Ted Morris with 36 points and Mashi Kaneta with 34 points on count back
over Steve Hamstad.
In the B Flight the winner was Graham Buckingham with 34 points ahead of a
count back on 33 points that saw Joel Flor in second and Daryl Evans in
third.
Near Pins: Brian Parish (2), Ted Morris, Mike Gaussa
Friday, Oct. 26, Crystal Bay – Stableford
This is always amongst my favourite courses; it was also fine to
see we had a full turnout for the day. All except our esteemed Friday leader
that is, who was not well and we wish him a quick recovery. Mind, as you get
older we are all reminded we are all in the ‘Departure Lounge’.
So the course was fine and we were treated to a fine day out, we were even
able to play with carts on the course which tells of the condition. Mind, in
all honesty there was little run and the greens were either slow and damp or
fast and slick. Still the weather was nice and we were able to get around as
fast as we wanted.
Round over it was into cars and back to Bert’s, a little later than normal,
then into the presentation. In the A Flight, 0 to 18, the winner was Paul
Sharples with 38 points ahead of David Nicholson in second with 36 points on
count back over Brian Parish in third. In fourth was Mashi Kaneta with 35
points.
In the B Flight the winner was Barry Oats with 43 points ahead of Joel Flor
in second with 38 points. In third was Daryl Evans with 37 points and in
fourth was Mick Coghlan with 34 points. T.T.F.N.

Hookey holds out at Eastern Star
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society saw its largest
field since February turn out on Monday, 22nd October to play a stableford
competition at Eastern Star, in two flights divided at 16.5 and under.
The course was surviving adequately after the weeks of heavy rain but
fairways were still soft and with very little run. The greens are improving
all the time at the course as the new ground staff get their feet under the
table and get their hands dirty at last.
In the second flight Ken Grimes took third place with 29 points, only one
behind the joint winners Mr Len and Ian Rowson.
In the top flight Ray Jackson shared third place with Ron Matthews on 31
points and Wichai Tananusorn returned the day’s best gross score of 83 which
gave him 34 points for second place. The winner was the ebullient Aussie
Garry Hookey and his infectious smile lit up the presentation when his score
of 35 points was announced.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy went to Ray Cody for his less
than impressive score. Rabbi’s beer draw was won by Tony Thorne. Soi Buakhao
gets busier by the day as the high season approaches but there is still
plenty of good golf available from Rabbi’s Elephant Bar with the Pattaya
Golf Society.
Tight finish
at Phoenix
Phoenix was in good condition on Wednesday, 24th October, when the
Pattaya Golf Society visited to play a medal event on the Mountain and Lakes
nines. The large field was divided into two flights at fifteen an under and
a tight affair was in prospect, especially after a heavy shower halfway
round cooled everybody off and refocusing was essential after a thirty
minute break.
In the second flight Ronnie Ramsay continued his good form with net 75 for
third place, only one shot behind the joint winners Garry Hookey and Ian
Rowson, on net 74.
In the top flight Dave Edwards took third with net 74 whilst Wichai
Tananusorn and Ron Matthews shared the win with net 73.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the boss’s free beer draw was won by Robbie
Taylor who had experienced a fretful day with a new putter which just didn’t
do as it was told!
The Booby Bevy went to Charlie Landrebe who suffered a delayed reaction with
some “Black Ants”, and when his caddy applied some sunblock to his legs he
found it difficult to continue with what appeared to be an extra club!
Disqualification loomed but the Booby Bevy sufficed.
Phoenix had witnessed some excellent golf and the winners are to be
congratulated for their efforts with the PGS.
Favourites win charity “Fun” Day
The Pattaya Golf Society returned to charity matters on Friday, 26th
October when the group visited Greenwood for its monthly fundraising event
for the Fr Ray Foundation Outreach Center on Soi Thepprasit. The basically
“fun” team event this month followed a “1-2-3” stableford format and was
played on the A and C nines. Technical prizes were sponsored by Mike Ensor,
Garry Hookey, Larry Slattery, Rabbi and the “Oz Boyz” and various individual
donations already had the figure at 1250 baht before the event teed off.
The last minute withdrawal of Mr Len on visa business meant that late
arrival Andrew Purdie took his place with the well fancied duo of Wichai
Tananusorn and Larry Slattery and they were to justify their ranking with 74
points for the win. In second place was the team of Tony Thorne, Tim Dale
and Ron Matthews with 69 points. The Scottish trio of Bobby Shirkey and the
two Ronnies, Senior and Junior, took third with 67 points.
Wichai took three of the four near pin prizes, yet failed to convert any to
birdies, and he shared the prize for the best total on the par fives with
Ron Matthews (10 points), whilst Dave Robinson added to his near pin prize
with the best total on the par threes (10 points).
The Booby Bevy went inevitably to the pairing of Bryan Barrell and Phil
McClure when the third member of their team failed to show up, leaving them
with a Herculean task. Rabbi’s special “technical” prize went to Andrew
Purdie as the first to drive OB.
Further donations were made during the presentation and in the end the group
had raised more than 6K for the kids at the Outreach Center, pushing the
total raised this year so far to almost fifty thousand.
The big one is in November when the Pattaya Golf Society’s Annual Charity
Scramble takes place at Pattaya CC on Wednesday 21st. Information and entry
forms are available at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar. Meanwhile thanks be to the
golfers at PGS for their tremendous support and efforts throughout the year
in charity matters.

Voller victorious on Chiang Mai Giant Panda Tour 2012
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Jomtien golfers on tour in
Chiang Mai.
This was our annual visit to Chiang Mai, which we put
back three weeks this time in order to avoid the inclement weather suffered
on last year’s tour.
There were 27 golfers here from Jomtien, the majority with partners, and as
always happens a couple of no-shows also. The majority of the players flew
up from Suvarnabhumi, a couple came by bus and also two pairs travelled on
the overnight train.
Normally we play here a 72-hole competition over the week but the local
society who booked our green fees were holding a charity day on the Friday
so we decided on a three day championship on the first three rounds with our
own independent game on the Friday.
We had three new courses on the agenda this year and this proved to be a
positive move and there no complaints with regard to either the course
conditions or the weather.
Monday, Oct. 22, Inthanon Golf Resort- Stableford
A one hour, ten minute drive out of town in a mini bus and our
first visit here to this course. There were no complaints about the
clubhouse and the facilities, so this was a good start to the day. The
course was in good condition and we were playing off the whites at 6,550
yards for the round.
There were 25 out today with the cut 3-17 in division 1, and 18 plus in
division 2.
‘Mr Grumpy’ was doing well in division 1 with 18 points after 7 holes but
lost it on the back nine and in the end Chris Voller won with 35 points.
Neville Scurrell took second one point behind and Tony Kay was in third
place after beating Steve Snelgrove, Bryan Rought and Jeff Cordeiro on a
20/17/15/13 back nine count back, all on 33 points.
The French boy, Jean Morel, won the second division with 35 points ahead of
Jimmy Johnson in second one point behind and Colin James was third with 33.
Near pins went to Mike Chatt, Jeff Cordeiro, Steve Snelgrove, Chris Voller
and Bryan Rought (2).
In the ‘2’s Mike Chatt birdied the 12th, Steve Snelgrove the 16th and Chris
Voller the 12th as well to share the pot in division 1, and a rollover
ensued in division 2 to Tuesday.
Tuesday, Oct. 23, Alpine Golf Resort – Stableford
There was a bit of confusion on the first tee when our groups
were split up with the local society and after a one and a half wait we
finally got off. It was another pleasant day weather-wise and the course was
good condition.
In form Chris Voller won again but with 36 points today. Steve Snelgrove,
playing off 3, was in second place with 32 points after beating Lindsay
Phillips 5/4 on a back three count back and Dennis Scougal and Tony Kay also
lost out after lower back nines.
Colin James topped division 2 with 32 points ahead of Jean Morel in second
who beat Burnie Sinclair 19/13 on a back nine count back after they both
scored 30 points.
Near pins today were claimed by Jeff Corderio, Steve Snelgrove, Chris Voller
(2), Colin James, Jean Morel and Burnie Sinclair.
Steve Snelgrove and Chris Voller shared the ‘2’s in division 1 while Colin
James took Monday’s rollover after a ‘2’ on the 12th in division 2.
Thursday, Oct. 25, Chiangmai Highlands - Stableford
This is probably everyone’s favourite course; in fantastic
condition and stunning scenery all round.
After two mediocre rounds Rod Howett bounced back today with 38 points to
win division 2 after beating Burnie Sinclair and Glyn Evans on a 22/21/18
back-nine count back.
Grant Cadell’s 37 topped division 1 scores with the London taxi boy Mike
Chatt in second just one point behind and in third place was Tony Kay with
35.
Near pins awards went to Jeff Cordeiro, Tony Kay, Steve Snelgrove, Iain
Usher, Marty Aronson, Jean Morel and Terry Redding (2).
Jeff Cordeiro and Tony shared the ‘2’s pot in division 1 and Terry Redding
was happy after recording the only one in the second tier after sinking a
birdie putt from one foot away on the second hole.
The overall winner of the Giant Panda Tour with scores of 35, 36 and 34
totaling 105 was Chris Voller. Well done Chris! In second place with 100
points was Tony Kay and in third with 99 was Steve Snelgrove.
Friday, October 26, Summit Green Valley - Stableford
This was a first for the majority of players and it was well worth the visit
- a great layout and in good condition.
Our last round of the trip and Tony Kay was playing to his 10 handicap and
won division 1 with 38 points, beating Lindsay Phillips on a 19/16 back nine
count back. Iain Usher took third on 37 and Bryan Rought was fourth with 36.
Jean Morel was the winner in division 2 after beating Burnie Sinclair 19/18
on count back after they both came in with 35 points. Jimmy Johnson was
third on 33 and Kari Aarnio took fourth with 31 points.
Ton Kay birdied the 3rd and 6th holes and Jeff Cordeiro the 12th to share
the ‘2’s pot in division 1 while there were no ‘2’s in division 2. There
were no nearest the pins today as we had a shotgun start with the local
society.
Everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable week and many thanks to Lyn and Terry
Redding for their efforts.

Brian’s week, but Clive close behind
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday prize winners, Daniel
& Brian.
Monday, Oct. 22, Bangpra – Stableford
With the Public Holiday marked down for Tuesday, we opted to
switch over to a Monday game, also to take advantage of our last chance for
a Bangpra Sport Day, before the upcoming high season. The course was the
driest we have played for many weeks, with the greens firm & fast,
especially from above the hole.
Clive Hoseason (24), who has been showing some good form lately, maintained
the rage to lead the way home with a well compiled 34 points. Brian Maddox
(22) was a point behind, to continue his recent run of podium finishes also.
Near pins were shared around between Owen, Daniel & Brian.
Thursday, Oct. 24, Century Chonburi - Stableford
Thursday, and it was back to one of our regular days, with a
visit to Century Chonburi where we teed off under clear skies, with a light
breeze at best to keep the humidity at bay. Brian Maddox (22) was the
hottest player on the course, recording a solid 36 points, edging Jeff Wylie
(5) into 2nd, after he signed for a hard fought 35 points. Clive wasn’t
letting his prize winning form slide too much, notching up 2 Near pins, with
Brian & Peter getting the others.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday, with ML
hosting prompt presentations on both days. As a PSC affiliated venue we
welcome all golfers, including Seniors who have opted for the “Silver” tee
option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you
there, cheers & good golfing!

JJ wins at Emerald
The Backyard Golf Society
JJ (left) poses with the staff
at the Blue Sky Bar.
On arrival at Emerald Golf Course, for our weekly game of
golf with the Backyard Golf Society, it was good to see 7 players and no
rain enabling us to have a competition and keep dry.
After weeks of the course resembling someone’s back garden it seems to
finally have turned around with less wet patches and more grass. Let us hope
this continues over the next few weeks!
With a big competition teeing off behind us our friendly starter got us off
in good time and we were back in the club house after 4 hours for prize
giving.
JJ won the Stableford competition with 33 points, beating both Dan M and
Mike C by 1 point and even though he had a 2 at the nearest the pin hole,
Tony C ended up closer to the pin to take the prize. Skins results were are
follows: JJ (5), Mike C (3), Tony C (3), Dan M (3), Andy Oz (3), and finally
Martyn (1).
With prizes being spread around this week the only guy without anything was
Micky, but being only his 2nd round in 6 months things can only get better!
Off to BC afterwards for a few cold ones and also wishing Tony C the best of
luck as he was off to work the next day for 2 months.

Scribe’s team scrapes home by a shot
Phoenix Members Golf Society
Tuesday’s winning team pose
with members of The Relax Bar staff.
Mike Gerrard
Tuesday, Oct. 23, Phoenix –
Stableford
Before I go into the Tuesday game I
will write about the Friday 19th October. Having just a nice select band of
players for 2 groups only we had no choice but to play the Mountain course
twice, due to there being large shotgun tournament on the other two courses.
This proved to be fun because we played the front nine holes from the white
tees and the back nine holes from the yellow tees. Our winner was Peter
Harris with a fine 36 points, followed closely by Stuart Gordon with 35
points and ‘Mr. Consistency’ Clive Robinson with 34 points.
We also gave two prizes out for near pins and they went to Clive Robinson &
Kristinn Helgason. The lucky draw prizes went to myself and Bill Hewitt.
Onto Tuesday and again we had uneven numbers due to a lot of our non member
guests having the day off because of this day being a Thai holiday, thus
making the green fees for guests a little too high. So we decided on team
play for a change and a closely fought fight it was.
Lake & Ocean (my favourite two nines) was the challenge, and what a
challenge Phoenix is turning out to be. Tee to green is no different to any
other course (except of course the fairways are much better than anywhere
else - should provoke a few comments) but when it comes to around and on the
greens a high standard of chipping and putting ability is required.
Having three 3-ball teams we decided to play the best two Stableford scores
to count for the team score. After nine holes the teams were virtually level
within one point of each other and with one hole left to play the teams were
within 3 points of each other, with our team, being at the bottom of the
pile. However, a fine par by Bill Hewitt and birdie by myself (giving a
total of 7 points on that hole) helped our team, which included Michael
Padilla, to win the day by one shot giving us a total of 81 points. The
other two teams scoring 80 and 79 points respectively.
Near pins went to Hugh Byrne (2) and Peter Harris. The lucky draw prizes
donated, as always by our hosts The Relax Bar at Ban Amphur, went to Patrick
Browne, Stuart Gordon and Gerry Hughes, leaving poor old Tim Mason being the
only player not to win anything – Ahhh!
As of next week and for the next five months or so the high season will
start and all guests of our group are entitled to a reduced green fee of
only 1,000 baht plus caddy and cart if required. However, we will only allow
six groups maximum on any of our days, which include Tuesday’s & Friday’s.
We also play every Sunday but the green fees for guests are quite high
(1,400 baht), plus caddy and cart if required.
Next week we play for the Trattoria Italiana voucher under stroke play
rules.
I am happy to say that the interest is picking up regarding sea fishing and
we have scheduled trips set for 10th November (couple of spaces available)
and either Saturday 24th or Sunday 25th of November as well. December will
also have at least two to three days booked. Anyone interested in the golf
or the fishing please call me (Mike) on 087 091 7565.

Schiffke supreme at St. Andrews
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Andy Rich
This week started off on Monday 22nd October with a hastily arranged
visit to St. Andrews after another course, not for the first time, messed up
our booking. So thank you to St. Andrews for fitting us in at such short
notice. Now this place is not really a holiday golfers’ course as it is too
difficult and a number of holes require a good opening drive to get you over
water or a ravine and even when you have achieved that there are those
devilish greens to contend with.
Ross
Schiffke - winner at St. Andrews.
I played with the eventual
winner on the day Ross Schiffke and although I managed to keep with him over
the front nine he ran away from me and the rest of the field over the back
nine. His secret seemed to be that he putted without fear and made the putts
whereas I still can’t forget three putting from four feet after two
brilliant approach shots - St Andrews can do that to you.
So Ross (15) finished with a magnificent 39pts and Jim Cleaver (12) came
second on 35pts. Tim Dalton (18), the man who hits every ball with a slice,
managed to keep it on the straight and narrow to finish third on 34pts.
Tuesday 23rd October saw TRGG head off to Greenwood (C and A) which is one
of my favourite courses mainly because the greens are flat and true. Mike
Rushant (12) continued his good form of the previous week again finishing in
first place on 36pts. Chris Sloan (8) shot 35pts which was good enough for
second place and a lady Tewin Poopay Lamthong (11) also on a good run of
form came third with 32.
Thursday 25th October was our weekly visit to Phoenix to take on (Mountain
and Lakes) courses. Remarkably three players all finished on 37pts which was
good enough to take the first three places. So on count back Chris Sloan (8)
slipped into first place, Jim Cleaver (12) took second and Robert Ledlie
(21) finished third.
A beautiful day greeted the golfers on Saturday 27th October for their visit
to Mountain Shadow. Dave Palmer (6) made the most of it by taking first
place on 37pts. Andrew Purdie (18) played to his handicap and shot 36pts to
finish second and Fergus Brennan (10) made it on to the winners rostrum with
34.
Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week!

Stephen signs off in style
PSC golf from Café Kronborg
Stephen Cooper-Reade (left)
with ‘The Admiral’ Dave Richardson.
Monday, Oct. 22, Khao Kheow -
Stableford
The Pete Dye designed Khao Kheow country club A&B loops were
the game today. A journey of 45 minutes and we got off the first tee 15
minutes early under sunny skies, with a nice breeze and very dry
underfoot for the whole round. The course on the day was the best we
have seen it in a long time with all re-sodded areas back in play.
It was a hot trek around in 4 hours and 20 minutes. I checked the
temperature at the starter’s office and it was 35C in the shade so it
must have been at least 38C out on the course.
Welcomes went out today to Tom Cotton, Tore Eliassen and Daryl Evans
while we said goodbye to Capt. Stephen Cooper-Reade until January.
We had another bookend winner (first & last rounds) today as Stephen
Cooper-Reade won with 40 points ahead of Dave Richardson in second on
39. Stu Rifkin came third on a count back from Mick O’Connor, both with
37 points, and Elias Magnusson took fifth on a count back from Niels
Hansen after both finished with 35.
1st Stephen Cooper-Reade (21) 40pts
2nd Dave Richardson (25) 39pts
3rd Stu Rifkin (16) 37pts
4th Mick O’Connor (24) 37pts
5th Elias Magnusson (21) 35pts
Thursday, Oct. 25, Bangpakong – Stableford
It was our longest trip of the month up route 7 for one hour
and 7 minutes to everybody’s favorite - the Bangpakong Riverside Course.
We managed to get off the first tee 10 minutes early under very sunny
skies and hot conditions. The course on the day was the most immaculate
around, great value.
Welcomes went out today to Kai Jalonen from Finland, working in
Singapore, John Davis, Gordon Clegg and John Heer and wife Martha from
Lancaster PA.
Gordon Clegg was the winner on count back from Leif Kirkgaard in second
and Mikito Homma third, all with 38 points. Mike Winfield came in fourth
on 37 and Ted Morris took fifth with 36 points.
1st Gordon Clegg (28) 38pts

Serena, Vika to compete in Thailand
Suwat Lipatapanlop, President of the
Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand, addresses a press conference to
announce the end of year challenge match between Serena Williams and
Victoria Azarenka.
The Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand under the patronage of
His Majesty the King and the city of Hua Hin have invited world #1
Victoria Azarenka and 15-time Grand Slam singles champion Serena
Williams to take part in this year’s Hua Hin World Tennis
Invitation, to be held at Centennial Park, Hua Hin on Saturday 29
December.
Victoria Azarenka and Serena Williams have been the most dominant
players in women’s tennis this year. Azarenka is ranked #1 and has
won 14 titles overall, with six just this year in an amazing 2012
that included her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open.
Serena Williams has won an astonishing 45 singles titles including
15 Grand Slam titles and Olympic gold. She also has 12 Grand Slam
doubles titles and three Grand Slam mixed doubles titles. Serena has
won six titles in 2012 including Wimbledon, the US Open and the
Olympic Games.
Victoria and Serena have played one another five times in 2012 – in
the semi-finals at Wimbledon and the Olympics, the finals in Madrid
and the US Open, at the WTA Championships in Istanbul last week.
Serena won all five matches but was pushed to the limit in a tight
match in Istanbul and at the US Open final, where she won 7-5 in a
thrilling third set.
President of the Lawn Tennis Association, Suwat Lipatapanlop said he
was delighted that the two tennis superstars had chosen to start
their new year in Thailand.
“Victoria and Serena are the biggest names in women’s tennis. We are

Dolphins close out the season with another loss
Thai Premier League Football 2012 Season

Pattaya United’s 2012 season came to a disappointing
close with yet another defeat, this time away at Samut Songkhram, as the
Dolphins finished in their lowest league position since joining the Thai
Premier League three years ago.
At Samut Songkhram last Sunday, United fell behind in the 50th minute to a
goal from Ivorian Bireme Diouf, who tapped home from close range after the
Pattaya keeper could only parry a free kick into his path.
The home team sealed the win 14 minutes later as Porawat Siriwattanakorn
scored a superb individual effort to give his team a 2-0 lead which they
held until the final whistle.
Pattaya United endured a miserable month as they garnered just one point
from their final five matches since last winning away at Esan United back at
the end of September. The poor run saw them finish just one place above the
relegation zone and players and officials will now be looking to regroup and
work harder during the off-season to come back stronger for next year.
At the top of the table, Muang Thong’s draw at BEC Tero meant that they
ended the season undefeated and were deserved Premier League champions.
Chonburi FC will be satisfied with their season after taking the runner-up
spot once again but the Sharks will be hoping to go one better in the next
campaign.

Ross rolls home to claim 2012 TQ Masters title
Sixty-one golfers assembled at Emerald Golf Club on the
morning of Friday, Oct. 19 to take part in the 19th TQ Masters golf
tournament, a tradition in Pattaya golfing circles, and battle for the
honour of donning the now famous and coveted green jacket.
Ross Schiffre wears the
champion’s green jacket as he receives the winner’s trophy from Mamasan Ead.
The format for the day was singles stableford with the field split into
three divisions and players going out off the white tees in 4-ball
groupings, as far as numbers permitted.
The Emerald course was presented in fine condition for the tournament
although the ground was a little damp following some heavy overnight rain
and the greens were consequently rolling a little slow.
After receiving their 2012 TQ Masters golf shirts and partaking of the free
Bloody Mary’s on arrival at the course, the players were also able to quench
their thirst on this hot day on almost every hole, thanks to the
complimentary beer and soft drinks being so liberally and ably dispensed by
Ann, Winnie, Pik and Apple from the TQ, and assisted in this task by the not
insignificant efforts of Erle and Wild Bill.
The pace of play was good and steady but the scores were nothing to write
home about as the heat of the day and the tough course conditions took their
toll on the field. The best of the day was the 37 points returned by Ross
Schiffre, which was enough for him to be declared as this year’s Masters
champion.
Phil Smedley topped the A flight ahead of Brad McDonald in second place and
Tom Thompson in third, while the B Flight honours went to the aforementioned
Ross Schiffre, being followed in by Keith Worboys and Moe Deverdene
respectively. C Flight was won by Rodney Williams ahead of the fascinatingly
named Bob ‘Scar’ Taylor in second and Dave Dziabo in third.
Long drive prizes were contested in each division and were won by Brad
McDonald (A Flight), Moe Deverdene (B Flight) and Matthew Earnshaw (C
Flight).
Near pin awards were also up for grabs and went to Brad McDonald, Moe
Deverdene, Tom Thompson and Ken Price.
Finally the Lucky Draw winners were announced with a bottle of spirits going
to each of Russell White, Barry Copestake and Matthew Earnshaw.
Following the golf, the players retired to the Tahitian Queen on Pattaya
Beach Road for the presentation ceremony and to enjoy the 3-hour ‘Happy
Hour’ and the delicious leg of ox barbecue provided by Bjarne from Café
Kronborg.
Finally, Woody and the staff of Tahitian Queen expressed their appreciation
to all participants and also to the tournament sponsors, and especially this
year’s main supporter Alan Bolton Property Consultants, all of whom
contributed to making this another successful and hugely enjoyable day. Roll
on 2013!

Third Thailand Open title for USA’s Kessy and Ross
Jennifer Kessy and April Ross
from the USA celebrate after winning the Bangsaen Thailand Open beach
volleyball tournament, Sunday, Oct. 28. (Photo/FIVB)
USA’s Kessy and Ross claimed their third Thailand Open
title on the FIVB SWATCH World Tour last Sunday in Bangsaen. In the first
ever USA-Russia final in women’s FIVB World Tour history they beat Russia’s
Evgenia Ukolova and Ekaterina Khomyakova in two sets: 21-17, 21-19.
Brazil’s Barbara Seixas de Freitas won her first World Tour medal ever with
her partner Agatha Bednarczuk in the bronze medal match against USA’s Lauren
Fendrick and Nicole Branagh (19-21, 21-19, 15-9).
Kessy (35) and Ross (30) played all six previous editions of the Thailand
Open in Phuket, the first one in 2006 with different partners. They won gold
before in 2008 and 2009 and finished second last year.
Overall they have collected 10 gold, 11 silver and 9 bronze medals in 71
events on the World Tour. The pair won bronze at the Grand Slam in Rome this
year and silver at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
“Winning silver at the Olympics was great, but we really wanted this medal,”
Kessy said. “We were desperate to win here. We won gold in every year we
played together, but this year we left it till the very end.”
From left-right: Russia, USA and
Brazil pose with their medals after finishing in the top three places.
(Photo/FIVB)
“It was tough, we fought against the weather here and we
reached the final the hard way, through the loser’s bracket, but we did it,”
said Ross, who dedicated her medal to her grandfather who passed away last
week.
The Russian team, who claimed gold in Klagenfurt this year and bronze in
Aland, did not get a lot of chances against the experienced Americans. They
were trailing the whole first set, had a small lead in the second set at
12-10, but gave that away again quickly. Russia managed to save one match
point at 20-18, but right after that Kessy finished the match with a cross
court spike: 21-17, 21-19.
A disappointed Ukolova said afterwards: “This was not our greatest game. We
are not happy about our performance today, but we are happy about the end of
the season, finishing third and second in the last two events.”
The battle for the bronze medal was a bit more exciting, with great rallies
due to excellent defence by both teams. Agatha and Seixas lost the first
set, despite a four-point-lead, to Fendrick and Branagh. The Brazilian team,
who were cheered on by a dozen Brazilian tourists, took a lead again in the
second, but the Americans levelled at 16-16. With some fumbling and
stumbling Agatha and Seixas managed to enforce a tiebreak in the end.
“We were really tense in the first set’’, Agatha said. “But in the middle of
the second we said: let’s just enjoy this.”
Seixas added: “We decided to let every point count, get the ball over the
net any way we could. And some crazy things started to happen.” And they
did, Agatha even passed the ball with her knee on one occasion.
In the deciding tie-breaker their effort paid off, the Brazilians took a
lead from 3-3 and claimed their first medal on their second match point:
19-21, 21-19, 15-9. Agatha won silver before, with Shaylyn in 2008 in
Guaruja, but former youth and junior world champion Seixas was never in a
World Tour final four before.
Fendrick and Branagh, who teamed up for the first time, were left with
fourth place. For 30-year-old Fendrick it was her second fourth place finish
in Thailand. Branagh won the event with Kerri Walsh in 2010 and finished
second in 2007 (with Youngs) and 2008 (with Turner).
The Bangsaen Thailand Open, powered by PTT, was the 12th and final event on
the women’s 2012 World Tour calendar.

PSC supports badminton and table tennis stars of tomorrow
Junior badminton doubles
final.
William Macey
Pattaya Sports Club has built up a, well deserved, reputation
donating funds to help the handicapped and underprivileged people of Pattaya
and surrounding areas.
But that is only part of the story.
Pattaya Sports Club has, for many years, been supporting and donating funds
to provide children with the opportunity to participate in sports of all
kinds. Whether it is the Blind School, Mercy Pattaya, CPDC or schools in the
area, PSC has been only too happy to provide the equipment and facilities
they need. Without the opportunity to play, whatever sport it may be, the
joy of making new friends, the exercise and, who knows, a potential world
class player may remain undiscovered as evidenced recently in badminton.
For the last ten years, PSC has donated funds to support the National
Badminton Championships at the YWCA centre in Chonburi. 500 children from
all over Thailand enter the competition and the standard of play, even for
the under 13 year olds, is amazing and it is exhausting, but a pleasure,
just watching the speed and agility of the children.
The winners and tournament
organizers pose for a group photo.
But in 2009 a young Thai lady, Ratchanok Intamon, not
only won the ladies tournament, for the third time, but had excelled to the
point where she became World Junior Champion and then delighted everyone by
retaining this title for the next 2 years. She is now too old at nearly 18
years to be able to defend this trophy but she did reach the quarter finals
at the London Olympics, losing to the world’s No. 2, and is now rated at No.
10 in the world. With a little encouragement, the facilities and equipment
to participate, perhaps this feat can be repeated by other Thai children.
But the story continues for when PSC was asked to support the second
National Table Tennis Championship held at school No. 7, there was no
hesitation to contribute and join forces with Rotary Pattaya and City Hall.
700 children from all over Thailand came to Pattaya to enter the
competition. As you can imagine, organising an event of this magnitude is
mind boggling but the Rotary had many volunteers and everything went
smoothly.
The Rotary District Governor Khun Thatree together with the Deputy Mayor
Khun Wattana was in attendance to open this big tournament.
As in badminton, the standard set by all age groups was incredible and on
final day, the audience sat spellbound watching the recovery and drop shots
of all the competitors.
By giving children the opportunity to discover where their sporting talents
lie, the Pattaya Sports Club is fulfilling the second objective in its
constitution, to promote sport among the young.
