Brad – Sunday’s best
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday, Oct. 7, Green
Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Brad Dippie (7) 39pts
2nd Tony Adams (10) 38pts
B Flight
1st Eddy Beilby (18) 36pts
2nd William Hornick (12) 34pts
Near Pins: No 4 Jim Brackett, No 9 Lee Adelly, No 12 Yui Bietry, No 16
Yui Bietry

Brad Dippie, right, with Eddy
Beilby.
The storm clouds gathered as the boys and girls made
their way to Green Valley, which led to a couple of cancelations, but the
expected storm did not materialize.
Aussie Brad Dippie was man of the match with a solid 39
points. Brad needed every one of them as Tony Adams grabbed the flight
silver just a stroke off the pace. (Pattaya model) Yui Bietry was a further
shot back of a podium place with 37 points.
In B Flight it was Eddy ‘the eagle’ who was perched on
the top of the podium with a steady even par round. Eddy put a two point
space between himself and a triumvirate of players which included William
Hornick, Barry ‘the boot’ Copestake and Mickey ‘nine holes’ Beresford.
William took the silver in the resulting count back leaving Barry and Mick
satangless at sea level.
Jim Brackett, William Hornick and Yui with a lovely pair
shared the 2’s pot.
Tuesday, Oct. 9, Greenwood
C&A - Stableford
1st Tony Adams (10) 32pts
2nd
Paul Hack 32pts
The Wolveridge and Thomson designed Greenwood seemed to
intimidate the society as a very modest group showed up to take it on. The
inform pair from down under Tony Adams and Paul Hack shared man of the match
honours on this single flight day with a very modest 32 points. Tony edged
Paul off the podium thanks to a count back.
Peter Goggin knocked in the only 2 of the day.
Wednesday, Oct. 10,
Burapha A&B - Stableford
A Flight
1st Colin Davis (17) 39pts
2nd Barry Copestake (15) 37pts
B Flight
1st Jimmy Day (18) 38pts
2nd
Walter Balechi (18) 34pts
The G/M ‘Donkey’ took his bi-weekly sojourn to the David
Graham and Gary Panks test with 39 points for the A flight honours and man
of the match. The ‘Donkey’ was two clear of Barry ‘the boot’ Copestake. For
the second time this week the girl on fire was just a stroke of a podium
place.
B Flight was marched home by Jimmy ‘the good captain’ Day
whose very creditable 38 points was five clear of (we don’t see enough of
him) Walter Balechi. Peter ‘Don Corleone’ Henshaw failed to gain a podium
place by a single stroke.
Jimmy made it a day to remember by sinking the only 2 of
the day.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya land Soi
1, Beach Rd Soi13/13 near Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us
just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 0898260764.

Triple Crown at St. Andrew’s
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC)
at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
On Wednesday, 10th October the Pattaya Golf Society
travelled to St Andrew’s to play a stableford competition on the testing
course. With the recent stormy weather the course was soft and yielding and
the greens were on the slow side.
A heavy storm held play up after nine holes and it was the group’s
misfortune on the restart to be behind a very pedestrian Asian five-ball
whose sole intention seemed to be to see it through until darkness fell. The
day was therefore destined to be a long one with scores to match.
Three people returned the same winning score, 32 points, and to Ken Grimes,
Jim Ferris and Gary Bolger went the plaudits. There were three birdie ‘2’s
with Jim Proctor muscling in an improbable chip on the fifth to join Wichai
Tananusorn and Larry Slattery’s more conventional efforts on the tenth.
Rabbi’s free beer draw was won by Ray Jackson and the Booby Bevy was held
over until the next outing because the “jobsworth” of a marshall who had
informed the group that the policy in high season at Green Valley was to
“call” all the par threes, was not present in Soi Buakhao. Check your
insurance golfers, Green Valley could be a dangerous place during the next
few months!
Gruelling golf
at Greenwood
The Pattaya Golf Society ended the week with a visit to Greenwood
to play a stableford round on the C and A nines. The recent monsoons have
almost swamped the province and Greenwood somehow has survived but with very
soft, even squelchy fairways and slow greens. Another long day lay ahead of
the group, thankfully swelling each round with returning friends after a
very flat low season.
Norwegian golfer Gubbi Innvaer always tries to perform to his best and on
this day his third place return of 30 was a credit to his patience and
nothing more than just reward for his efforts. Two golfers shared the win
with Margaret Wilkinson proudly matching the efforts of Tony Thorne with 31
points, the latter finding some form at last after a couple of torrid
months.
Larry Slattery came up with his second successive birdie ‘2’, this time on
the long C3 hole, with the Scottish trio of Donnie McKinnon, John and Mark
Malpass picking up the Booby Bevy for their plodding efforts on a course
completely new to them. Thus another PGS week ended after tough rounds in
testing conditions.

Greenaway wins Butterworth B’Day Bash
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Monday, Oct. 8, Burapha –
Stableford
Thirty-two players turned out for Andy Butterworth’s
Birthday Bash at Burapha on a rainy, overcast day. Fortunately however, the
rain stopped by the time we teed off but the day was still overcast and
threatening and some groups got wet over the last few holes.

Monday’s top golfers (from
left) John O’Keefe, Paul Greenaway, Andy & his good lady, Paul Bourke, &
Dave Edwards.
The course was playable but we still had ‘lift, clean and
place’ as there were lots of wet and muddy areas common at this time off the
year. The greens were very good and because of the wet fairways we played
off the white markers on A & B which made for some good scoring.
The winner of Andy’s Birthday Bash was Paul Greenaway
with an excellent 40 points off his 7 handicap. Div A went to his good
friend, another Paul, this time Bourke with 38, followed home by Mark
McDonald now playing off 2, who shot a very fine gross 73 for his 37pts.
Dave Edwards took Div B with 39pts ahead of the birthday boy on 37 and Sugar
Ray edged out John O’Keefe on count back, both scoring 39.
Back at the Outback, Andy treated everybody to an
excellent spread of food and there were also four near pin prizes, sponsored
by Andy, that were won by Steve Mann (A3), Dave Edwards (A6), Bernie
Stafford (B3) and Mark McDonald (B8); and apparently at one stage Andy had
his name three out of the four near pin markers.
Finally, welcome back to Al Bryce and Chris Sloan getting
acclimatised ready for the Chiang Rai/Mai tour which starts on Thurs this
week and welcome also to Mili, who was having his first game with the
Outback.

Tuesday, Oct. 9, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
Eleven Outbackers at Pattaya Country Club, where Dennis
Persson (34) pipped the day’s organiser Chad (33) by one, to take the day’s
top spot, followed home by Geoff Moodie, who beat K E Persson on count back,
both with 32.
We apologise for the curtailed write-up due to the
current Chiang Mai/Rai tour commitments.

Tuesday, Oct. 9, Laem Chabang – Stableford
There were 17 playing today at Laem Chabang, playing off
the blue tees which played at 6500 yards or thereabouts; probably not a wise
decision as the course was wet from the rain we have had in the past week -
we also had to endure a couple of squalls during play. However, the thinking
behind the ‘blues’ decision was to produce a level playing field compared to
the ladies tee. Sorry for any inconvenience caused!
The Sugar Man decided that after he had put his ball in
the water on hole A 7 that he would take a drop with a cart right in his
line of sight twenty yards in front of him. Yes, you guessed it but, not
only did he hit the cart it went straight through the back of it and then
kindly bounced out to give him a perfect lie on the fairway and no, it
wasn’t his cart. After all that luck he didn’t manage to score.
Kev Watson, after three threatened starts last week,
eventually made it to the golf course and bagged the day’s top score of
35pts to win Div A from Capt’ Steve with 34. Suzi, who ran the day, showed
that she can play this course, managing to get 33pts which was enough to
beat the men struggling from the blues, led by Wayne Waywood.
There were no ‘2’s and welcome to some more players who
were heading up to the north of Thailand later in the week for the Outback’s
8th Chiang Mai Challenge; namely Bob Maloney, Wayne Waywood, Ian Jones & Ron
DeGroot.
Div A (0-13)
1st Kevin Watson (8) 35pts
2nd Steve Mann (9) 34pts
3rd Kevin Waycott (8) 32pts
Div B (14+)
1st Suzi Lawton (20) 33pts
2nd Wayne Waywood (16) 32pts
3rd Eric Curley (15) 30pts
Wednesday, Oct. 10, Siam Plantation – Stableford
With the General & the Captain away to Chiang Rai this
morning, the organisation of Siam Plantation was left in the capable hands
of Chad. A few earlier transport hiccups, with the bus trying to be in too
many places at once, depleted the field by one or two and another no show,
due to a previous good night out, left a field of 8 to play a wet
Plantation, with more rain during the round.
There were no ‘2’s
1st Mili Popovic (16) 33pts
2nd Chris Sloan (8) 31pts
3rd Tom Fitzpatrick (12) 30pts
Wednesday, Oct. 10, Pattana – Stableford
Thirteen Outbackers out of the seventeen who had booked
to play Pattana today turned up, the other four guys must have got lost
en-route.
We teed off on A & B from the yellows some fifteen
minutes early and yet again we had the course to ourselves, enabling a well
paced round and most of us making it in before a big down pour at the end.
Due to the excess of rain in recent weeks, we played pick ‘n’ place “thru
the green”. We shall look forward to drier times end of the wet season and
we will certainly be going back to enjoy the course and the refurbished
restaurant.
We had three ‘2’s today from Suzi Lawton – A3, John
O’Keefe – A8 and Paul Bourke – B3.
1st Mark McDonald (2) 36pts
2nd Paul Bourke (10) 35pts
3rd Paul Greenaway (7) 34pts
4th Bernie Stafford (14) 33pts
Friday, Oct. 12, Green Valley – Stableford
Seventeen Outbackers turned out for Green Valley for our
regular Friday venue; the numbers down mostly due to the PSC Monthly
Competition and the guys who were playing up in Chang Rai/Mai.
I would like to say a big thank you to Paul Greenaway for
helping me to set the players off as we teed off slightly earlier than the
usual 9:30am and one of the players only turned up just in time to play.
We played through the green, pick, clean and place as
they had a fantastic storm the day before so we weren’t sure what the
condition of the course would be in. In all fairness to Green Valley it has
one of the best drainage systems in place in Pattaya, so it was only in
parts where the ground was very wet.
There were two 2’s today and they were both from Paul
Greenaway on Hole 12 & 16
1st Suzi Lawton (20) 38pts
2nd John O’keefe (16) 37pts
3rd Paul Greenaway (7) 36pts
4th Martin Kingswood (13) 35pts
5th
Michael Padilla (22) 35pts

‘Tricky’ Nicky rules the week
PSC golf from The Golf Club

Ross Schiffre, Phil Smedley &
Nicky Handscombe were the top three on Wednesday.
Steve Ellison
Monday, Oct. 8, Green
Valley (White tees) – Stableford
1st Nick Handscombe (12) 38pts
2nd Geoff Doody (22) 35pts
3rd
John Emmerson (12) 34pts
Oh, what a strange game we play. Full of ups and downs,
insecurities and surprises, golf never fails to keep us entertained in one
way or another. It was the turn of our very regular visitor Nicky Handscombe
to capture the spoils this week as his 38 points was enough to take the top
spot at Green Valley. Nicky gets round Europe and Asia with work and his off
time is spent here on our local links and with our pork chops from the
grill.

Nick Handscombe doing what
everyone at The Golf Club loves most.
The course continues to stay in very good condition,
despite all the recent rains. Geoff “Howdy” Doody usually plays with us on a
Monday. We don’t see much of him as he resides on that dark side of town
where the goblins and trolls live. Nice to see you in the frame Geoff; well
played mate! Our own TGC partner John Emmerson brought up the rear with 34
points playing off a 12 handicap.
Even though Pattaya was inundated by flooding over the
past 2 weeks, we had no fear here at The Golf Club. As the waters rose on
Soi LK Metro, we knew the expert sandbagging abilities of a certain Khun
John would certainly keep us in the dry.
Wednesday, Oct. 10,
Phoenix (White tees) – Stableford
1st Nick Handscombe (11) 39pts
2nd Phil Smedley (12) 36pts
3rd
Ross Schiffre (15) 35pts
Yes, we were here just last week but it was so popular,
we decided to come back. Nicky Handscombe was glad we did as he was cut a
stroke from his Monday win and, just to show us, he goes out to shoot an
even better score of 39 off his 11 handicap! Sure is a fun game sometimes.
Our capitano de golf, Sir Philip of Smedley, had another
consistent round and took second with 36 points, with visiting Ross Schiffre
scooping third a stroke back. Nick is off for a few weeks, so now we all
have half a chance of winning once again. Nice double mate!
For Friday’s golf we had the pleasure of joining Joe and
the PSC gang at Pleasant Valley, so please see the write up for the big
tournament results. Thanks for joining us for another great week of quality
golf here at The Golf Club, the home of golf in Pattaya.
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We
usually play on Monday, Wednesday and Friday so come join us for a seriously
fun day out. Just call 085 434 3377 or see our website

Stephen flies in to snatch victory
PSC golf from Café Kronborg
Monday, Oct. 8, Crystal Bay -
Stableford
Crystal Bay B&C layout was the challenge today and after a 45
minute journey there through scattered showers, it seemed that we had to
wake the staff up to check-in as we were the first brave souls to show up.
We got off B1 20 minutes early under overcast skies and very wet conditions
under foot which made for a slow day. The course on the day was very swampy
but the greens were fine.
Back in the clubhouse after a sloshy round of 4 hours and 20 minutes we
welcomed back world traveller and BA 777 captain, Stephen Cooper-Reade.
Stephen was the winner today with 33 points ahead of Mick O’Connor and Elias
Magnusson.
1st Stephen Cooper-Reade (20) 33pts
2nd Mick O’Connor (24) 32pts
3rd Elias Magnusson (21) 31pts
Thursday, Oct. 11, Plutaluang - Stableford
Plutaluang golf course’s East and South loop was the venue for
today and we teed-off 35 minutes early under cloudy skies and humid
conditions. As we made the turn there were dark skies and distant thunder
off towards Utapao air base that finally got us after we walked off the 16th
green and we had torrential rain for 40 minutes. So much for dry shoes!
Back in the clubhouse after a 5 hour round it was welcome back to Kevin
Dinan and congratulations to out winner for today, Niels Hansen, who led the
field home with 37 points.
1st Niels Hansen (14) 37pts
2nd Kevin Dinan (25) 29pts
3rd Elias Magnusson (21) 26pts
4th Mikto Homma (17) 25pts
Note: If you are looking for a game of golf in Pattaya, call Dave at
083 602 2117 or email [email protected]. We also have Bjarne’s birthday
competition coming up on Monday 5 November at Plutaluang with prizes and
food back at the Cafe Kronborg. Sign-up sheet goes up on Monday 22 October.

Robbins the master of Phoenix
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Lee Butler launches another ball into orbit.
Monday, Oct. 8, Greenwood C&A –
Stableford
The prospects for golf looked gloomy as we had breakfast at The
Ranch, with the remnants of tropical storm Gaemi passing over
Pattaya, producing grey skies and drizzling rain. Several regulars
were deterred by the weather, but a quick call to the course
confirmed they were open and the small group of “die-hards” set off
to face the worst the weather could offer.
The rain had stopped when we reached the course, and the car park
was empty, so it was clear that most locals had also decided there
was little chance of playing a full round today. It was buggies
allowed only on cart paths, so we elected to play ‘pick, clean and
place’ for the fourth game in succession.
The fairways were wet and soggy, but the greens were O.K. and the
round progressed smoothly with no other golfers sighted on the
course, and only a 10 minute shower of rain as the first group
reached the 12th tee.
Geoff Parker coped with the difficult conditions better than anyone
else, and managed to play to his handicap to take the top podium
position. Geoff Cox was in second place and collected two near pin
prizes on the way, to cap a successful day.
Back at The Ranch everyone agreed that the day had been thoroughly
enjoyable despite the wet conditions – after all what better way to
spend a rainy day in Pattaya?
1st Geoff Parker (13) 36pts
2nd Geoff Cox (15) 34pts
3rd Tony Robbins (12) 33pts
Near Pins: Geoff Parker, and Geoff Cox (2).
Wednesday, Oct. 10, Bangpra – Medal
A complete contrast to Monday morning as our group of 16
golfers set off to Bangpra in bright sunshine and under a dazzling
blue sky. On arrival we found that the course was still extremely
soggy following the recent rains, and once again, we elected to play
‘pick, clean and place’. This proved to be a good decision because
the fairways were completely covered in worm casts, where the
blighters had surfaced, presumably to avoid drowning.
The round progressed smoothly until the leading groups were
approaching the end of their round and a rogue black cloud appeared,
apparently from nowhere. The first two groups managed to complete
the 18th hole before the heavens opened, but unfortunately the third
and fourth groups had fallen several holes behind when the deluge
came. The fairways quickly turned into rivers and the course became
unplayable, forcing us to cancel the competition and record our
first washout of the year.
Friday, Oct. 12, Phoenix Ocean & Mountain –
Stableford
Another bright sunny morning as we set off on the short
journey to Phoenix and a pleasant surprise greeted us when we
reached the first tee as we found that the ground was dry and firm.
The starter set us out on the unusual combination of Ocean and
Mountain nines, and all went well until we reached the first hole on
the inward nine to find 4 groups waiting to tee off – obviously the
starter was having a bad day!
The inward nine was congested and painfully slow, producing our
longest round for quite some time and reminding everyone that the
start of the high season is not too far away.
The winner on the day was Tony Robbins (who’s becoming a bit of a
Phoenix specialist) with an impressive 40 points, two points clear
of Lee Butler.
1st Tony Robbins (12) 40pts
2nd Lee Butler (14) 38pts
3rd Paul Smith (3) 31pts
Near Pins: Paul Smith, PJ Redmond and Tony Robbins(2).
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society, who
now play out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd Road (in front of the
fire station, and almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play three
times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy
a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive golf competition why
not come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and
new players are always welcome. Contact Buff on 086 046 5091 or 080
605 5663 for all enquiries. You can find all the news, schedules and
results on our website at http://www. bunkersociety.com.
The annual John Preddy Charity Golf Tournament will be held on
Friday 23rd November 2012, at Mountain Shadow G.C., more details to
follow shortly.

Toddy & Bernie too good at Rayong
PSC golf from The Growling Swan

Bernie McCart, Sandy Leiper &
Martin Todd.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, Oct. 8, Rayong
C.C. – Stableford
After continual rain overnight the expected phone calls
arrived, commencing at 7.30 am – “Are we still playing?” was the big
question and once again it was necessary to tell our faithful crew that
Rayong Country Club was a long way away from Pattaya and could well be “open
for business”.
It was still raining when the reassured 17 golfers
assembled at The Growling Swan and a quick phone call to the golf course
confirmed that all was well. We departed the GS in 2 minivans after a 5
minute delay waiting for a “no show” and after a dry 40 minute journey we
arrived at the course which although was wet after much recent heavy rain,
was completely playable.
No carts on the fairways naturally so winter rules
through the greens applied and our first four-ball teed off 15 minutes ahead
of schedule at 9.45 am. The weather was fine with the sun breaking through
continually and it was fairly humid with very little wind.

Takeshi Hakozaki & Brad Todd.
The golf course had stood up to the wet weather fairly
well although the greens were certainly not as good as they have been
recently. With not a soul in front of us we proceeded at a good pace and
completed the front nine in just on 2 hours where we stopped for a drink
before tackling the back nine.
All went well until we reached the 16th
tee and fortunately, even though the drink stand there was not staffed it
came in very handy for sheltering from the 20 minute heavy shower. Then it
stopped and we continued to find no real adverse effect to the course after
the rain and we completed our round in four & a half hours which included
the twenty minute delay.
The day’s outing once again proved that regardless of the
overnight rain, weather forecast and weather conditions in Pattaya on the
morning of golf – we can always be optimistic about golf on the day.
We were able to have 2 grades with four podium spots in
each. A Grade was for handicaps 0 to 20 and B Grade for 21 and over. We had
nearest the pins on all the par threes which were sponsored by Ken Bernek,
Sandy Leiper, Bernie McCart & Dick Braimbridge. There were also rewards for
longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens which were sponsored by Martin
Todd & The Mandurah Country Club. Many thanks to these golfers for their
generosity.
On a difficult day for golf it was Martin Todd who
finished first in A Grade with a steady 35 points and in a count back for
second & third on 34 points, Ken “let’s hear it for” Bernek (16 point back
nine) edged out Mike “Hunter” Gosden (14 point back nine). Martin Todd’s son
Brad once again made an appearance on the podium by finishing fourth with 31
points.
It was terrific to see Bernie McCart having his first win
with a fine 37 points in B Grade and Kae came back to a bit of good form by
finishing second with 32 points. Max “two corsets” Bracegirdle finished
third with 31 points and Frank Donnelly was fourth with 29 points.
A Flight (0-20)
1st Martin Todd (8) 35pts
2nd Ken Bernek (14) 34pts
3rd Mike Gosden (12) 34pts
4th Brad Todd (20) 31pts
B Flight (21+)
1st Bernie McCart (31) 37pts
2nd Duangjai Tusagad (33) 32pts
3rd Max Bracegirdle (27) 31pts
4th Frank Donnelly (21) 29pts
Near Pins: 5th – Martin Todd; 7th – Martin Todd; 16th – Brad Todd
Long Putts: 9th – Mike Gosden; 18th – Ebrahim
The Compass Cap is no more but has been replaced by The
Growling Swan NAGA award. This is awarded to the golfer who has the worst
score on the day and discreetly their score is not made public. The winner
of the inaugural NAGA award on this occasion was Sandy “leaperfrog” Leiper
who accepted the trophy in typical fine spirit.
Thursday, October 11,
Crystal Bay, A & B – Stableford
After a fine couple of days we were confident of playing
some reasonably dry golf although we had heard some reports that Crystal Bay
was not draining well and was very wet. This was vindicated as I received a
phone call at 8.15 am from the course stating that carts were not allowed at
all due to the condition of the course and this information was very much
appreciated as it allowed one of our group to not make the journey which
reduced our playing group to eighteen.
We welcomed Russell Goldsworthy from my old Golf Club
Gosnells in Perth, Western Australia and also Phil Knight from Pattaya,
formerly of Victoria, Australia.
We departed the GS right on time at 8.30 am in 2 mini
vans and headed off down No.3, arriving at the course 45 minutes later. As
expected it was very quiet so with little delay we were invited to commence
on B nine so our first group teed off 15 minutes ahead of schedule at 9.45
am.
It was easy to see why there were no carts allowed as the
course was indeed fairly saturated but it must be said that as winter rules
through the greens were allowed there was always a fairly dry spot to be
found enabling the course to be playable without too much trouble and the
greens were in very good shape although naturally a little slower than
normal. The weather was fine although humid and with plenty of blue skies to
be seen above although one sensed that at some stage we were going to get a
shower or two.
We completed our first nine in just over two hours and
were travelling quite well until with 2 holes to play we needed to take
shelter at the hut near the A8 tee as we were subjected to a 25 minute heavy
“sun” shower which partially flooded the A7 & A8 greens but when the rain
stopped the greens drained very quickly and we were able to continue. We
finished our round in the overall time of four and a half hours which
included the 25 minute stop for rain.
We were able to have 2 grades with four podium spots in
each. A Grade was for handicaps 0 to 14 and B Grade for 15 and over. We had
nearest the pins on all the par threes which were sponsored by Ken Bernek,
Fiona Crebo, Brendan Byrne & Max Bracegirdle. There were also rewards for
longest first putts on the A9 & B9 greens which were sponsored by The
Mandurah Country Club. Many thanks to all for their generosity.
Playing on his “home” course it was once again Takeshi
Hakozaki who was triumphant and he took out the A Grade with a steady 36
points. With 2 golfers on 34 points a count back was necessary to decide
second & third and Mike Allidi (17 point back nine) just edged out Martin
Todd (16 point back nine). Your writer managed to scrape into fourth spot
with 32 points.
Brad “Toddy Junior” Todd continued his excellent form by
winning the B Grade with a fine 38 points and Ebrahim came second with 35
points. Brendan Byrne made it on to the podium for the first time & finished
third with 29 points, 1 ahead of Fiona Crebo in fourth place.
A Flight (0-14)
1st Takeshi Hakozaki (11) 36pts
2nd Mike Allidi (2) 34pts
3rd Martin Todd (8) 34pts
4th Peter Blackburn (11) 32pts
B Flight (15+)
1st Brad Todd (20) 38pts
2nd
Ebrahim (15) 35pts
3rd Brendan Byrne (17) 29pts
4th Fiona Crebo (22) 28pts
Near Pins: A5 – Martin Todd; A8 – Peter Blackburn; B4 – Takeshi
Hakozaki; B6 – Ken Bernek
Long Putts: A9 – Mike Gosden; B9 – Russell Goldsworthy
The winner of the Growling Swan NAGA award on this
occasion was newcomer Phil Knight and I would like to say he accepted the
award in good spirit but unfortunately I cannot. Back at The Growling Swan
afterwards we had a very good crowd, including several of the Growling Swan
“Delinquents” who were looking forward to their next outing at Mountain
Shadow in a few days time. Plenty of cold, low-priced beer was the order of
the day and quite a few of us stayed a bit longer than we had originally
planned but it was great fun once more.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any
persuasion – low & high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We
generally play Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly
The Bunker Bar) in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at
8.30 am. For bookings or more information please contact Peter on 0806 351

Rock revels in tough conditions at Eastern Star
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Kari Aarnio, Chuck Anderson
and Rod Howett.
Monday, Oct. 8, Pattana – Stableford
We are now in the height of the rainy season and after a deluge
overnight here in Jomtien and it still raining heavily in the morning, we
had 14 cancellations by phone before our scheduled departure. A quick phone
call to the course however confirmed it was open and we set off with still
enough in the group to form 2 divisions
We were allocated the B and C courses upon arrival and it was very gloomy in
the as we made our way around and by the 14th tee we had a delay of 30
minutes as a storm broke overhead, while one group misunderstood the
Marshall’s instructions regarding safety while there is lightning and they
returned to the clubhouse.
So with 4 non returns we were down to 1 division in the end and in his last
game but one with us before his return trip back to work in China, the
Bristol boy, Bob Poole won the day with 36 points. Colin James took second
two points behind and Jerry Sweetnam beat Ted Morris on a 19/17 back nine
count back for third after they both came in with 33 points.
A birdie ‘2’ in both divisions today from Ted Morris in division 1 and
William Chang in division 2 left them happy while the Scottish boy has
returned for six months with his toys - welcome back Dennis Scougal (The
telephone box will be busy in the next few days!)
Wednesday, Oct. 10, Phoenix - Stableford
We had a booking at Bangpakong today but with the weather
situation as it is it may have caused mayhem regarding numbers and transport
so we cancelled on Monday afternoon and switched to Phoenix at the last
minute.
The forecast was still unpredictable but we managed to get out 6 groups
today and at reception we were told we would be playing the Lakes and Ocean
nines. However, once we went down to the Marshall’s hut we were switched to
the Mountain and Lake course.
The cut today was 8-16 in division 1 and 17 plus in division 2 and Bob Poole
won the second tier with 39 points, five ahead of Gordon Everingham in
second with Karri Aarnio taking third with 33. Russell Gilroy, playing of
12, topped the premier flight with 37 points, while Sid Cowley was second
with 34 after beating Chris Voller on a 19/17 back nine count back, both
with scores of 34.
Near pins today went to Gary Ashley, Dennis Scougall, Don Head, Joe Kubon
and Jean Morel.
No ‘2’ recorded so a rollover in both divisions to Green Valley on Monday.
Friday, Oct. 12, Eastern Star - Stableford
The same old story all week, heavy overnight rain and a few
cancellations in the morning, but we end up with 25 out today in 2 divisions
with the cut coming at 16 and below for the top flight. The course was a bit
sodden in places but the crazy part is they had let carts onto the fairway
the previous day and there were heavy tyre ruts on the approaches to all the
greens.
Marty Rock won division 1 with 37 points, a remarkable score in these tough
conditions. Nick John took second place five back on 32 after beating Chuck
Andersson on a 19/16 back nine count back, while Karl Flood lost out on a
podium spot with just 14 on the back nine.
Frank Kelly led division 2 home with 34 points and the ‘darkside’ boy Andy
Baber beat Rodney Howett on a 15/13 count back for the runner-up place after
they both came in with 29 points.
The first three groups finished their rounds with no rain but the remainder
had a 30 minute delay for a passing shower, however all the cards (with the
exception of one, no names mentioned) were returned.
Near pins were won today by Mikael Andersson, Grant Cadell, Karl Flood, Jon
Lay, Andy Baber, Glyn Evans and Glen King.
Karl Flood birdied the 3rd hole to take the ‘2’s pot in division 1, while
Andy Baber, Frank Kelly and Glen King shared the division 2 purse with
birdies on the 3rd, 13th and 17th respectively.
The return leg of the 12 a-side matchplay against the Backyard Boys has been
postponed until the 23rd November at Emerald owing to the condition of the
course and their chance to recruit a few more players after their 8½ - 3½
defeat in the first round.
It’s Chiang Mai next week and everyone is looking forward to the trip.

Monsoon with the monkeys
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Winner Guy Stewart, 2nd left, and
runner-up Mashi Kaneta, far right, with two of Bert’s ‘finest’ and a
nice pint.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, Oct. 9, Bangpra – Stableford
It never seems to do anything but rain, and every course
seems like a quagmire at present, so to go down to Bangpra was a test of
belief in the ability of certain courses to drain. Despite it pouring
down the night before, or in fact for weeks, we decided to nip down to
there and as we set off it was overcast so we feared the worst.
Booked in and off we went –naturally there were no buggies allowed on
the fairways and what I expected happened. The place was crawling with
monkeys. They were mostly up in the trees but they were out in force and
I had to leave the caddy with the cart from the second hole on. Even so
they managed to bypass her and got into her bag. I hear they also got
into other caddies bags; they look for food as all caddies tend to take
some with them.
The ground was wet and soggy and we got as far as the 9th before it
started raining, very hard! Eventually it eased, and being brave we
managed to get half way down the tenth before it rained again. Another
break and we ploughed on with sopping fairways until we arrived on the
par-three 12th, then the heavens really opened and the rain came down
like stair rods for ages.
At this time we should have packed it in, but as Bangpra have a no green
fee back policy we battled on. So bad was the green on twelve that I
four putted from 15 feet, water just stopped the ball, and threw
valuable points away. But we battled on as did in fact all the other
players. The fairways were awash, and the greens very hard to putt on,
and the ball just stopped where it landed.
Wet and cold we finished the round and were soon into hot showers, then
a quick bite to eat in the restaurant before it was into cars and a
quick return to Bert’s, much later than we normally arrive.
We got into the results as soon as we could, and the winner was Guy
Stewart on count back from Mashi Kaneta, both with 36 points. In third
was Walter Baechli with 34 points ahead of Derek Brook in fourth with 33
points and bringing up the winners rear was Dick Warberg with a hard
fought 28 points. The rest got washed away. We then had a couple of
‘cold uns’ and replayed the rain and all said what a fine day it was. No
accounting for some people. T.T.F.N.

Wylie wins at Pleasant Valley
PSC 119th Monthly Golf Tournament
The October monthly winners pose for a
group photo.
Report Nigel Cannon/ Photos William Macey
The picturesque Pleasant Valley was the course selected by Golf
Chairman Joe Mooneyham to host this month’s tournament on Friday, Oct.
12. The course was in excellent condition considering the number of
rainy days we have had of late. It was ‘pick, clean and place’ through
the green, with just a sharp shower for about 20 minutes as the first
group were finishing – the day was fine.
Yui
was a multiple prize winner.
There were 100 members signed up to play but due to some personal
problems and navigational concerns, the field was reduced to 96 – which
is a good number for October. There were a many new faces today
including Lee Aderlly, a professional caddy with the European Tour, and
Santa Clause, a.k.a. Rick Bevington who is back getting ready for his
Christmas duties.
Joe was joined by Social Chairman - Nigel Cannon – for registration and
welcoming all players prior to commencing their rounds. With a couple of
‘local groups’ infiltrating our competition, rounds were about 4½ hours.
As the players came in to hand in their cards, there were many
complementary comments thanking PSC for once again coming up with
another successful day.
Mark West, left, winner
‘B’ Flight.
With a fine 73 it was Jeff Wylie who won the low
gross prize. It was a count back to determine ‘A’ Flight – playing medal
from the blue tees – with newcomers Shaun Merriman (10) and Jean Maffray
(12) both scoring a net 67 with Shaun just getting the nod.
‘B’ Flight had the best Stableford score of the day with Mark West (17)
(another new face) with a great 43 points. 42 points was sufficient to
secure ‘C’ Flight by Reijo Heiskanen (18), and in ‘D’ Flight player
Michael Coghlan (29) was in top spot with 40 points.
We had 9 ladies today and count back required as both Oil St Laurent
(29) and Lakda Onsee (18) had 38 points with Oil in first place.
Pleasant Valley has an excellent restaurant overlooking the 9th and 18th
greens and many took the opportunity to partake before making their way
to Pattaya and Lewiinski’s. Almost all today’s players – some with
partners – came to enjoy the buffet provided by Colin and his staff
which was, as usual, simply the best! With such a big number it was
appreciated that Marchinelo – who is due to open an Italian restaurant
next door – loaned Colin his premises for the evening.
After all were satisfied it was presentation time – Nigel Cannon called
order and welcomed all and introduced Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham. Joe
expressed his appreciation to all members playing today and complimented
Colin and his staff on another fine spread. He also gave details of an
upcoming professional golf tournament at Amata Springs in early December
with many top professionals in attendance and volunteers were needed as
marshalls. In addition, complementary tickets for all 4 days will be
available from PSC golf venues and clubhouse. This, another example of
the relationship PSC has with the Eastern Seaboard Golf Association.
Nigel then announced the results and Joe presented the prizes, assisted
by PSC President Tony Oakes. This was followed by the lucky draw and
finally the 50/50 winner, who for the second time was Phillipe Pruvot
and who went home a very happy man.
The next PSC monthly is on Friday 16th November at Crystal Bay – sign-up
sheets are in the clubhouse.
Words by Nigel Cannon, Photos’ by William Macey.

Shaun Merriman, right, winner ‘A’ Flight.
Reijo Heiskanen, right, winner ‘C’
Flight.
Ladies winner Oil St Laurent with friend.
Phillipe, left, is all smiles after his
50/50 win.
Welcome back to Rick Bevington, right,
a.k.a. Santa Claus.

Ole the only one under par
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, Oct. 8,
Bangpra - Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Wayne Waywood (16) 32pts
2nd Ron De Groot (14) 30pts
3rd
Frank Dunstan (26) 26pts Bangpra provides enough
problems without the added difficulty of an extremely wet course, which
today offered zero run and made a good recovery from the rough a very
dicey prospect. When all added together it made for a day when scoring
was at a premium and the best of the day was a four over handicap
returned by Wayne Waywood who just held on to win from playing partner
Ron De Groot by two points.

Ole Stamnes.
Frank Dunstan led in the rest of a very bedraggled
field to take third place six behind.
Without the wetness, the course would have been in
tip top condition coming into the high season and it is a pity that the
group will not be playing it many times during the coming months as the
management have once again switched to split tee times from two tees
with the early tee times having to finish teeing off by 8.40 am and the
second tee times starting at 11.40 am, making it a gamble that the last
tee times in a group of forty players, which is usual during the high
season, will be able to finish their rounds if the pace of play is slow
after reaching the turn.
It is all a pity as analysis has shown that the
maximum numbers of tee times on an eighteen hole course can be achieved
by starting from one tee and playing right through the available
daylight as there are no later blank spots on the opposite nine when an
earlier gap occurs in the starting slots.
There were no 2’s today in the second division but
Ron De Groot had one in the first to sweep the pot.
Before the presentations were made there were welcome
backs for Bob Maloney, Wayne Waywood and Ron De Groot.
Wednesday, Oct. 10,
Pattana A & B (yellow tees) - Stableford
CSS 73
1st Erik Donnestad (4) 35pts
2nd Frank Dunstan (26) 34pts
3rd Trevor Schirmer (17) 32pts

Erik Donnestad.
On a course that was in basically good shape there
were however some areas that were almost unplayable due to the amount of
water, but with some careful drops from casual water, having first
decided where the nearest point lies, a reasonable game could be played.
Erik Donnestad, who some will remember played for
Norway in the World Cup of Golf a few years ago, led in the day’s
hopefuls with a one over handicap round after a return that included two
birdies and nine pars that was just enough to consign Frank Dunstan into
second place.
Frank had high hopes of improving on his recent form
that has seen his handicap plummet four strokes back at his home course
in Sydney, so much so that it now sports a small anchor beside it on the
handicap sheet. However, after he had gone out in four under handicap
for twenty two points, he sadly slipped into normal mode with just
twelve on the inward half.
Trevor Schirmer, who is still struggling with a
nagging knee injury, did well in one of his occasional rounds to take
third place another two behind. Trevor will be hoping for a full
recovery following his proposed trip back to Oz in November where he
will be undergoing some surgery to try and rectify the problem.
There were no 2’s in either division and precious few
threes either.
Prior to the presentations being made there were
welcome backs for Kare Lunde and B.J. Smith.
Friday, Oct. 12,
Phoenix Lakes & Ocean (white tees) - Stabelford
CSS 73
1st Ole Stamnes (27) 37pts
2nd Frank Dunstan (26) 36pts
3rd Brian Libbey (9) 35pts
4th Rick Morgan (7) 32pts
5th Erik Donnestad (4) 32pts
6th
Shuichi Kodaka (16) 32pts
For the first time in several outings the course of
the day was found to be in tip top shape, as is usual at Phoenix where
the course seems to drain so much better than most of the other courses
in the area. Even golf carts were being allowed on the fairways and
although the run on the fairways was not at its longest, a good drive
went a lot further than on many of the other courses lately.

Wayne Waywood.
Ole Stamnes has taken good note of his playing
partner Erik Donnestad’s style and swing recently and put it to use in
formatting his win by a single point after an exceptional back nine that
saw him accumulate twenty one points.
Ole’s win was at the expense of the revitalized Frank
Dunstan who while he has not matched his handicap while on holiday here
in Pattaya, has done enough to encourage him that on his return home to
Wakehurst Golf Club he will be looking to remove the anchor from beside
his name after another very good nine holes, this time the back half, of
twenty points that ensured his third podium placing of the week.
Brian Libbey took third place with a solid one over
handicap round, leaving Rick Morgan in fourth after he won a count back
over Erik Donnestad and Shuichi Kodaka with a better 17 on the inward
half as Erik and Shuichi could muster just 16 with Erik better on the
last six by 11 to 9.
Once again there were no 2’s in either division.
Back at The Haven there was a welcome for new member
Paul Young and welcome backs for Shuichi Kodaka and Rick Morgan.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven
group, you can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven
Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All
transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up
prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Monday, Wednesday,
and Friday on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be
played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Murdering Murtagh on the loose
Phoenix Members Golf Society
Tuesday’s winners and Relax Bar staff
members pose for a group photo.
Mike Gerrard
I don’t know what this guy did for the 3 to 4 months he was away
in Europe (various places) but whatever it was it has certainly improved
his game. In the last two weeks or so since he returned he has scored
sub handicap scores. Never mind, as we say, “enjoy it while you can”
because very soon (especially when your handicap comes down) the bubble
will burst.
Today, Oct. 9, Eamon Murtagh scored 40 points to leave the rest of the
field way behind with the next best scores coming from Peter Harris on
33 points and John Bartley with the same but having a slightly poorer
back nine. Eamon was duly awarded with the KPK Food Services cap as
depicted in the photo with one of the lovely staff (Pon) wearing it at
the Relax Bar.
With the weather being very inclement over the last week or so the
fairways of Phoenix have rarely been seen wetter, thus allowing carts on
paths only. This also hinders the shorter hitting players due to there
being no run on the fairways. Mind you, a few of our big hitters had
trouble scoring as well.
Near pins this day went to Tim Mason (2) and John Bartley. Lucky draw
winners (sponsored by our hosts The Relax Bar) were Mike Gerrard (free
massage), David Lusha (free drink) and Mukesh Thakker (50 baht).
The previous Friday, Oct. 5, another guy, Gerry Hughes, from the ‘Old
Country’ (Ireland) managed to score 38 points to beat Mukesh Thakker
(36pts) into second place with yours truly on 35 points to claim third.
Near pins went to Peter Rawling, Mike Gerrard and Bill Hewitt. Lucky
draw winners were Paul Taylor, Granville Swanton and Patrick Browne.
I can advise you all that as from the 1st November the high season rates
(Monday to Friday) will apply to non Phoenix members. However, within
our group any non member can enjoy a special green fee rate of only
1.000 baht (plus caddy 300 baht) as a guest of a member. Carts at
Phoenix cost 700 baht for 18 holes and only 350 baht for nine holes and
two players can share.
We always encourage new members or guests but please be aware the we
limit our field to 6 groups only and we do not allow any handicap to
exceed 28. Beginners or non proficient players would not fit in with
this group. Neither do we allow ladies to participate in the game but
they are very welcome at the presentation at The Relax Bar after the
game.
Anyone interested in joining or going sea fishing can call me (Mike) on
087 091 7565.

Cheetham makes winning return
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Andy Rich
The Rainy Season showed no signs of abating for this past week
and Monday 8th October got off to a particularly damp start. Still, it
takes more than a bit of rain to put off the hardy souls of the TRGG and
armed with our brollies and wet weather gear we set off to once again
take on the very formidable Bangpra.
Now this course, known as the monkey course (it can make a monkey out of
you on the best of days), is difficult enough in the dry but with zero
run on the ball and the greens as slippery as ever it was definitely not
going to be a day for high scores.
Fergus Brennan (11) led the way home with a valiant 30pts; naturally he
did have an advantage being Irish as they are used to playing their golf
in the rain. Frank Seaton (10) made it into second place with 29pts and
yours truly, Andy Rich (20), slipped into third place with 28.
On Tuesday 9th October Khao Kheow (B and A courses) played host to the
TRGG. Again the skies were very threatening but the scoring showed a
vast improvement on the previous day and Norman Cheetham (15) swooped
back into Thailand from Australia to take first place with 37pts. Ted
Senior, who had swooped back in the week before from the land down
under, came second on 36pts. I am afraid I don’t know where Bob Chiofalo
(22) had swooped in from but he took third spot with 35.
Thursday 11th October saw a smaller field than the previous week head
off to Phoenix to play the Mountain and Lakes courses. As a result we
were back to just one division so perhaps my forecast last week that we
were back into High Season was a little premature.
The ladies in the field showed once again that Phoenix is a very
accommodating course with their placement of the Ladies tees (I shall
probably get hung, drawn and quartered for that remark but I call it as
I see it). The very charming Tewin Poopay Lamthong (11) finished top of
the leader board for the second week running with 37pts. Tony Gliddon
(10) decided not to let the ladies have it all their own way by
finishing second on 35. Another lady, the equally charming Lucky Symons
(16) came in third with 34pts (am I forgiven ladies?)
Saturday 13th October rounded off the week with some drier weather and a
trip to Crystal Bay to play A and B courses. The scores returned
certainly mirrored an improvement in the weather. Jim Sykes (10) showed
a marked improvement on his recent scores to take first place with
40pts, with Rick Morgan slipping into second place on 39 and Mike
Rushant taking third on 36.

Brian & Clive carve up the spoils
PSC golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Brian & Clive, stars of the show last
week.
Tuesday, Oct. 9, Pleasant Valley -
Stableford
Tuesday was a re-visit to Pleasant Valley - we had been there
recently but with the PSC monthly scheduled for Friday we considered it
good planning to familiarize ourselves with the venue.
Despite all the recent rains and the club’s directive to keep carts on
the path, we found the course was in reasonable condition, opting to
play the ball as it lay. No stories of mud on the ball etc were
forthcoming and few casual water drops were required.
Brian Maddox (21) had a return to form this week, edging Clive Hoseason
(24) on count back 20/18, after both signed for a creditable 36 points.
Near pins were picked up by Bruce, Jeff & Brian.
Thursday, Oct. 11, Greenwood - Stableford
Greenwood was the venue for Thursday’s game, the A & C
combination being our test of the day. The course was again in decent
condition, so we played the ball as it lay, but kept the carts off the
fairways to protect the course.
Clive Hoseason (24) with 33 points gained some revenge over Brian Maddox
(21) 32 points, while near pins were also secured by Jeff, Clive &
Brian.
Our trip to Pleasant Valley on Tuesday paid off for the Mulligans
Lakeside crew at the PSC monthly event on Friday, with Clive maintaining
his form to record 39 points for third place in D Flight, while Jeff
shot 73 to win the Low Gross and get a near pin on Hole #17.
The course was much wetter on Friday, with ‘lift, clean & place’ being
implemented and casual water drops required on several holes.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday &
Thursday, with ML hosting prompt presentations on both days. As a PSC
affiliated venue we welcome all golfers, including seniors who have
opted for the “Silver” tee option. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or
enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Stuvik aims for the top after improved season
Teams prepare for Race 1 on the starting
grid at Spa Francorchamps.
Thai racer Sandy Stuvik confirmed a huge step forward
in his racing career by finishing 14th overall in the 2012 Formula
Renault Northern European Cup. Stuvik is still one of the youngest
racers in the Formula Renault championship and with the improvement from
28th position last season to 14th in this year season, he has given
clear indication of how he is maturing as a top level formula racer.
Having been regularly racing in the top ten against some of the best
young drivers in the world, the Thai driver will be eager to fly the
Thai flag on the podium in the coming 2013 season.
The season ending 2 races at Spa Francorchamps in Belgium last weekend
eventually became a battle against the rapidly changing weather in the
Ardenne mountains. Stuvik started the first race from 20th place after a
chaotic half wet, half dry qualifying session and ended the race after 2
safety car sessions and a red flagged race in 16th position.
The second race saw the front of the grid starting on slick tires and
the back on wet tires, as the weather was impossible to predict with
heavy gray clouds above. Stuvik started from 15th position on slick
tires; however seconds before the race went green, the rain started and
all the cars on slick tires were quickly relegated down the order. The
Thai driver found himself several places down after the first lap and it
was only a matter of doing his best to keep the car on the road for the
duration of the race. In the end he would finish a distant 23rd place.
Stuvik is already planning his 2013 season, which will start with more
testing and training to develop his driving skills to the highest level.
The youngster is firmly intent on being the first Thai driver to fly the
flag on the formula podiums of Europe since the days of Prince Bira more
than 50 years ago.
Sandy Stuvik races for the Royal Automobile Association of Thailand and
is sponsored by The Pizza Company, Singha Corporation, Dacon Inspection
Services, Bira Circuit and Sports Authority of Thailand.

Sandy Stuvik, left, battles for position
in the season ending races in Belgium, Sunday, Oct. 14.
Sandy was stuck on the Race 2 start grid
with slick tires, just as the rain began to fall.

Pattaya Sports Club Fishing Report

The scribe with a “painted sweetlip” cod.
Dene Mundy Our first trip for
this month on Saturday 6th October comprised seven regular members (5 or
more trips), after 2 late cancellations due to work commitments and one
replacement who was available on short notice.
The trip got off to a good start in overcast skies,
slightly choppy waters and gentle breezes and we were soon in our
regular fishing spots landing a good variety of fish. Probably not our
best days fishing but certainly very pleasant and moderate bag catches
of our usual pla-dang, grouper, snapper, yellow tail etc.

Andy, Jason and Wanna with their prize
catch.
Dang completely ignored our warnings of the previous
trip and easily landed the most fish, beating the male contingent by
far. I was lucky and caught the only large fish of the day (3 kilos)
which we have now identified as a “painted sweetlip” a variety of cod. I
have previously referred to these fish as blue spotted cod. Many thanks
to Sommai who provided the glossy pamphlet of “Marine Fish in Thailand”
which enabled the identification.
Only 4 of us adjourned to our restaurant for our
usual refreshments where we recapped the events of the day.
A full complement of 8 regulars and visitors set out
from Khram Marine at 07:00 hours on Thursday 11th October in mirror like
waters, clear blue skies and a gentle breeze.
We welcomed back Robert Vlietinck returning from Oz
after 6 months dredging in the west coast oil and gas areas. Also, we
welcome newcomers Andy Moseley (a Rayong resident) and friend, Jason
Owens here on a working (?) holiday. A big welcome also to Khun Wanna
(who arranges my insurance policies).
Most had reasonable bag catches for the day with Andy
and Sommai easily the champs. Jeff and I had a bad day with only 2 or 3
kilos each which is probably the smallest catch we have had this year.
Jeff did win the largest fish competition with a nice four foot shark.
This can be good eating after removing head and tail immediately and
subsequently “skinning” the fish.
We were late returning (around 19:00 hours) due to
the skipper being low on fuel reserves requiring him to conserve usage
by reducing speed to 3 knots. He has assured me this will not happen
again.
The 8 of us went to our restaurant, exchanged info
over a few beers and voted the day as excellent.
I would still like 2 more bookings for our trip on 25
October – call me on 081 862 6279.

Dolphins desperate for win as specter of relegation looms
Thai Premier League Football 2012 Season
Pattaya United’s Ludovick Takam, left,
sees his shot on the Bangkok Glass goal go narrowly wide during their
Thai Premier League fixture at the Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya, Sunday,
Oct. 14. (Photo/Pattaya United)
Pattaya United face a nervous climax to the Thai
Premier League season after a goalless draw against Bangkok Glass last
weekend left the Eastern Seaboard outfit requiring one more win from
their final two fixtures to ensure that top flight football will still
be played in the seaside resort city next year.
United failed to break down a stubborn and at times desperate Bangkok
Glass defence at the Nongprue Stadium on Sunday despite an all out
assault in the second half that saw shots rain down on the visitors’
goal. Several United players were guilty of squandering chances that
they would normally be expected to put away and this has been
symptomatic of the problem all season of failing to regularly hit the
back of the net. (The Dolphins have notched only half the total number
of goals of league champions Muang Thong United, despite having played
one game more).
United’s final two fixtures are away trips to third placed BEC Tero
Sasana on Sunday, Oct. 21 and Samut Songkhram on Oct. 28. Should United
lose both those games, they would require Thai Port and Chainat to drop
points in their final 2 fixtures in order to maintain their place in
Thailand’s top flight.
