Thai Garden Resort wins environmental award

Pattaya’s Thai Garden Resort has been honored for its environmental awareness by one of the world’s largest travel companies and tour operators.

Ralf Rau and Peter Abi-Saleh, service managers for United Kingdom-based TUI Travel Plc, which operates in 31 countries including Thailand, presented the “TUI Environmental Champion” award to hotel Manager Danilo Becker Sept. 2. The hotel was one of 190 worldwide to receive the prize.

TUI has handed out the awards since 1996 to hotels that display environmentally and socially responsible management. Criteria include conserving energy and water and guaranteeing healthy organic foods.

TUI has long been working with Travelife, a sustainability standard who certificates hotels worldwide. The Thai Garden Resort had already been awarded gold certification by Travelife several times.

Becker said the Thai Garden Resort trains employees on “green issues” like waste management, alternative energy sources, saving of information material by reducing the layout of newspapers and leaflets, Green Leaf program, mindful use of water, avoiding unnecessary cleaning of towels and linens, lasting durable tableware and items, and energy conservation.

The hotel also offers non-smoking rooms and apartments, recycling of paper, use of naturally grown food, sports activities for maintaining fitness, recycling and refilling of printer cartridges and the separation of kitchen waste and disabled access.
