MNRE pushes for Andaman Sea as a World Heritage Site

BANGKOK, 29 Jan 2015,  The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) is pushing for the Andaman Sea to be registered as a world heritage site. 

General Dapong Rattanasuwan, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment yesterday met with Mr. Pramote Maiklad, Chief of the Reform Council on Natural Resources and Environment of the National Reform Council, discussing the direction for the natural resources and environment management and reform.

One of the major topics discussed was the ministry’s plan to register of the Andaman sea as a world heritage site.

Currently, the Department of National Parks Wildlife, and Plant Conservation is conducting a feasibility study of the plan, as the previous one was conducted a decade ago and is now out of date.

According to General Dapong, Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha is particularly concerned whether the registration of the Andaman sea as a world heritage site will affect the livelihood of the locals.
